Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the leading causes of disability. We aimed to report the MDD-attributable prevalence, incidence and years lived with disability (YLDs) in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region from 1990 to 2019 by age, sex and socio-demographic index (SDI). Methods: Publicly available data on the burden of MDD were retrieved from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study 2019 for the 21 countries in MENA. The counts and age-standardised rates (per 100,000) were presented, along with their corresponding 95% uncertainty intervals. Results: In 2019, MDD had an age-standardised point prevalence of 3322.1 and an incidence rate of 4921.7 per 100,000 population in MENA. Furthermore, there were 4.1 million YLDs in 2019. However, there were no substantial changes in the MDD burden over the period 1990–2019. In 2019, Palestine had the highest burden of MDD. The highest prevalence, incidence and YLDs attributable to MDD were found in the 35–39 age group. In 2019, the YLD rate in MENA was higher than the global rate for almost all age groups. Furthermore, there was a broadly negative association between the YLD rate and SDI. Conclusion: The study highlights the need to prevent the disorder using a multidisciplinary approach and for the provision of cost-effective treatments for those affected, in order to increase their quality of life. Background Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia and this progressive neurological disorder is associated with substantial mortality and morbidity. We aimed to report the burden of AD and other types of dementia in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, by age, sex and sociodemographic index (SDI), for the period 1990–2019. Methods publicly accessible data on the prevalence, death and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) because of AD, and other types of dementia, were retrieved from the global burden of disease 2019 project for all MENA countries from 1990 to 2019. Results in 2019, the age-standardised point prevalence of dementia was 777.6 per 100,000 populations in MENA, which was 3.0% higher than in 1990. The age-standardised death and DALY rates of dementia were 25.5 and 387.0 per 100,000, respectively. In 2019, the highest DALY rate was observed in Afghanistan and the lowest rate was in Egypt. That same year, the age-standardised point prevalence, death and DALY rates increased with advancing age and were higher for females of all age groups. From 1990 to 2019, the DALY rate of dementia decreased with increasing SDI up to 0.4, then slightly increased up to an SDI of 0.75, followed by a decrease for the remaining SDI levels. Conclusions the point prevalence of AD and other types of dementia has increased over the past three decades, and in 2019, the corresponding regional burden was higher than the global average. Objective. This study reported the burden of gout and its attributable risk factors in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region between 1990 and 2019 by age, sex, and sociodemographic index (SDI). Methods. Data on the prevalence, incidence, and years lived with disability (YLD) due to gout were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 study for the 21 countries in the MENA region, from 1990 to 2019. Results. In 2019, the regional age-standardized point prevalence and annual incidence rates of gout were 509.1 and 97.7 per 100,000 population, which represent a 12% and 11.1% increase since 1990, respectively. Moreover, in 2019 the regional age-standardized YLD rate was 15.8 per 100,000 population, an 11.7% increase since 1990. In 2019, Qatar and Afghanistan had the highest and lowest age-standardized YLD rates, respectively. Regionally, the age-standardized point prevalence of gout increased with age up to the oldest age group, and it was more prevalent among males in all age groups. In addition, there was an overall positive association between SDI and the burden of gout between 1990 and 2019. In 2019, high BMI (46.1%) was the largest contributor to the burden of gout in the MENA region. Conclusion. There were large intercountry variations in the burden of gout, but in general, it has increased in MENA over the last 3 decades. This increase is in line with the global trends of gout. Study Question: What is the global, regional and national burden of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), by age and socio-demographic index (SDI), over the period 1990-2019?Summary Answer: In 2019, the global age-standardized point prevalence, incidence and years lived with disability (YLD) of PCOS were 30.4, 29.5 and 29.9 per 100 000 population, respectively.What Is Known Already: Data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study 2017 showed that the global age-standardized PCOS incidence rate increased 1.45% over the period 1990-2017.Study Design, Size, Duration: A systematic analysis of the PCOS prevalence, incidence and YLDs across 204 countries and territories was performed.Participants/materials, Setting, Methods: Data on the point prevalence, annual incidence and YLDs due to PCOS were retrieved from the GBD study 2019 for 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2019. The counts and age-standardized rates (per 100 000) are presented, along with their corresponding 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs).Main Results and the Role Of Chance: In 2019, the global age-standardized point prevalence and annual incidence rates for PCOS were 1677.8 (95% UI: 1166.0 to 2192.4) and 59.8 (95% UI: 41.7 to 78.9) per 100 000, which represents a 30.4% and 29.5% increase since 1990, respectively. Moreover, the global age-standardized YLD rate in 2019 was 14.7 (6.3-29.5), an increase of 29.9% since 1990. In 2019, Italy (7897.0), Japan (6298.7) and New Zealand (5419.1) had the highest estimated age-standardized point prevalences of PCOS. Globally, the number of prevalent cases and the point prevalence of PCOS peaked in the 25-29 years and 40-44 years age groups, respectively. Positive associations were found between the burden of PCOS and the SDI at the regional and national levels.Limitations, Reasons For Caution: Variations in how PCOS was defined is a major limitation that prevents valid comparisons between different regions.Wider Implications Of the Findings: Globally, the burden of PCOS has increased at an alarming rate, making it a major public health concern. Aim: To report the point prevalence, deaths and disability-adjusted-life-years (DALYs) due to type 2 diabetes and its attributable risk factors in 204 countries and territories during the period 1990-2019. Methods: We used the data of the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2019 to report number and age-standardised rates per 100 000 population of type 2 diabetes. Estimates were reported with 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs). Results: In 2019, the global age-standardised point prevalence and death rates for type 2 diabetes were 5282.9 and 18.5 per 100 000, an increase of 49% and 10.8%, respectively, since 1990. Moreover, the global age-standardised DALY rate in 2019 was 801.5 per 100 000, an increase of 27.6% since 1990. In 2019, the global point prevalence of type 2 diabetes was slightly higher in males and increased with age up to the 75-79 age group, decreasing across the remaining age groups. American Samoa [19876.8] had the highest age-standardised point prevalence rates of type 2 diabetes in 2019. Generally, the burden of type 2 diabetes decreased with increasing SDI (Socio-demographic Index). Globally, high body mass index [51.9%], ambient particulate matter pollution [13.6%] and smoking [9.9%] had the three highest proportions of attributable DALYs. Conclusion: Low and middle-income countries have the highest burden and greater investment in type 2 diabetes prevention is needed. In addition, accurate data on type 2 diabetes needs to be collected by the health systems of all countries to allow better monitoring and evaluation of population-level interventions. Background: Understanding global trends in the point prevalence, deaths, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) for asthma will facilitate evidence-based decision-making.Research Question: What are the global, regional, and national burdens of asthma in 204 countries and territories between 1990 and 2019 by age, sex, and sociodemographic index (SDI)?Study Design and Methods: Publicly available data from the Global Burden of Disease study from 1990 through 2019 were used. All estimates were presented as counts and age-standardized rates per 100,000, along with their associated uncertainty intervals.Results: In 2019, the global age-standardized point prevalence and death rates for asthma were 3,415.5 and 5.8 per 100,000, which represent a 24% and 51.3% decrease since 1990, respectively. Moreover, in 2019, the global age-standardized DALY rate was 273.6 and the global point prevalence of asthma was highest in the group 5 to 9 years of age. Also in 2019, the United States (10,399.3) showed the highest age-standardized point prevalence rate of asthma. Generally, the burden of asthma decreased with increasing SDI. Globally, high BMI (16.9%), smoking (9.9%), and occupational asthmagens (8.8%) contributed to the 2019 asthma DALYs.Interpretation: Asthma remains an important public health issue, particularly in regions with low socioeconomic development. Future research is needed to examine thoroughly the associations asthma has with its risk factors and the factors impeding optimal self-management. Introduction: This study aimed to perform a meta-analysis on the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) among patients with asthma and to measure the association asthma has with MetS. Methods: The Web of Science, Medline, Scopus, Embase and Google Scholar were searched using the "Asthma", "Metabolic Syndrome", "Dysmetabolic Syndrome", "Cardiovascular Syndrome", "Insulin Resistance Syndrome", "Prevalence", "Odds Ratio", "Cross-Sectional Studies", and "Case-Control Studies" keywords. All observational studies reporting the prevalence of MetS among people with and without asthma were included in the study. In the presence of heterogeneity, random-effects models were used to pool the prevalence and odds ratios (OR), as measures of association in cross-sectional and case-control/ cohort studies, respectively. Results: The prevalence of MetS among patients with asthma (8 studies) and the OR comparing the prevalence of MetS among patients with and without asthma (5 studies) were pooled separately. The pooled prevalence of MetS among patients with asthma was found to be 25% (95% confidence interval (CI): 13%-38%). In contrast, the overall pooled OR for MetS in patients with asthma, compared to healthy controls, was 1.34 (95% CI: 0.91-1.76), which was not statistically significant. Conclusion: The prevalence of MetS was relatively high in patients with asthma. Furthermore, the odds of MetS was higher in patients with asthma, compared to healthy controls, although this difference was not statistically significant. More original studies among different populations are needed in order to more accurately examine the association between asthma and MetS, as well as the relationship asthma has with the individual components of MetS. Introduction: The objectives of this study were to provide an estimate of the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components among women with PCOS; and calculate the odds ratio (OR) for MetS (using different definitions of MetS) in women with PCOS, compared to healthy controls. Methods: All of the relevant databases were used to search for appropriate articles that were published during the period 2003-2016. We included observational studies (cross-sectional, comparative cross-sectional) among women who met the inclusion criteria. The random-effect models were used to pool the prevalence of MetS and its components among PCOS women. This model was also applied to the pooled OR assessing the association between MetS and PCOS. Results: The pooled prevalence of MetS among PCOS women was found to be 26.30% (95% CI: 23.68-28.93), but varied from 7.10% (95% CI: 1.64-12.56) to 37.50% (95% CI: 28.84-46.16), depending upon the diagnostic criteria used. Low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) - 61.87% (95% CI: 53.31-70.43) and high waist circumference (WC)- 52.23% (95% CI: 43.84-60.61) were the most common components of MetS in PCOS women. Compared to healthy controls, the overall pooled (OR) of MetS in PCOS patients was 2.09 (95% CI: 1.67-2.60), but this ranged from 0.31 (95% CI: 0.13-0.74) to 4.69 (95% CI: 2.09-10.52), depending upon the diagnostic criteria used. Conclusion: Women with PCOS had a much higher prevalence of MetS than was found among the healthy controls. Furthermore, as low HDL and high WC were the most common components of MetS in PCOS women, these two components specifically need to be addressed in prevention strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 were used to report the burden of migraine in 204 countries and territories during the period 1990 to 2019, through a systematic analysis of point prevalence, annual incidence, and years lived with disability (YLD). In 2019, the global age-standardised point prevalence and annual incidence rate of migraine were 14,107.3 (95% Uncertainty Interval [UI] 12,270.3-16,239) and 1142.5 (95% UI 995.9-1289.4) per 100,000, an increase of 1.7% (95% UI 0.7%-2.8%) and 2.1% (95% UI 1.1%-2.8%) since 1990, respectively. Moreover, the global age-standardised YLD rate in 2019 was 525.5 (95% UI 78.8-1194), an increase of 1.5% (95% UI -4.4% to 3.3%) since 1990. The global point prevalence of migraine in 2019 was higher in females and increased by age up to the 40 to 44 age group, then decreased with increased age. Belgium (22,400.6 [95% UI: 19,305.2-26,215.8]), Italy (20,337.7 [95% UI: 17,724.7-23,405.8]), and Germany (19,436.4 [95% UI: 16,806.2-22,810.3]) had the 3 highest age-standardised point prevalence rates for migraine in 2019. In conclusion, there were large intercountry differences in the burden of migraine, and this burden increased significantly across the measurement period. These findings suggest that migraine care needs to be included within the health system to increase population awareness regarding the probable risk factors and treatment strategies especially among young adults and middle-aged women, as well as to increase the data on migraines.
