Nynex Corp appoints Ivan G. Seidenberg as president and chief operating officer (COO). The promotion of the 28-year insider places him in line for the position of CEO when the current chairman, William C. Ferguson, retires in 1995. Seidenberg was chosen over Frederic V. Salerno, whose influence led Nynex to invest $1.2 billion in Viacom Inc for that company's Paramount Communications Inc, a deal of questionable merit. Seidenberg's new challenges are likely to include fending off competition from other Baby Bells vying for the New York telephone market. The company is also working to loosen regulations so that it can proceed with plans to build interactive networks throughout the Northeast.

IBM chief strategist Bernard Puckett is out and is replaced by James Cannavino. Puckett held his position for only four months. The change could signify that IBM Chmn Louis V. Gerstner is not satisfied with the pace of change. Gerstner has been a subject of recent criticism for what some characterize as a lack of strategic vision. Cannavino is a controversial figure with a reputation for a confrontational style. He has contributed to IBM in various areas, including microcomputers, operating systems, the PowerPC development effort and multimedia technology. Some observers blame Cannavino for allowing Microsoft Corp to exploit microcomputer software at IBM's expense in the 1980s.

Digital Equipment Corp (DEC) chooses Robert B. Palmer to be the company's new president and CEO. Palmer is also elected to DEC's board. Kenneth H, Olsen, founder and president of the company, will retire in Oct 1992. Olsen indicates that the board forced him out. Digital will report a loss in the 4th qtr of $1.5 billion or more. In the same period a year ago, DEC lost $871 million, or $7.08 a share, following a $1.1 billion charge on revenue of $3.95 billion. Industry observers say Palmer is likely to make many changes in management and to speed efforts to cut costs.

IBM's Carl J Conti, the executive who manages the company's mainframe and disk drive businesses, retires and is succeeded by Nicholas M Donofrio. Conti, 54, says he was planning to retire in Apr 1992 but decided to do so a few months earlier because of IBM's new reorganization plans. Conti notes that stepping down early will give Donofrio, 46, more time to make arrangements for the planned reorganization. Conti notes that he is leaving when demand for mainframe computers is picking up, despite a general low demand because of the recession. Conti admits that he has experienced some frustration with IBM's ability to get things done. Conti plans to raise Arabian horses on his farm, which is north of New York.
