- Abstract
The name of Gergur Pythiraeus Mekinić is well known in the history literature of Burgenland Croatians only from 1969 when two studies about him were published in the Review for History and Ethnography in Maribor from: Ivan Škafar (1912-1983) and Marijan Smolik (1928-2017). The authors of the studies discuss the hymnals Duševne pesme (Spiritual songs 1609, 1611) which were the first printed hymnal in the Slavic south intended for Burgenland Croatians living in Sveti Križ in western Hungary. The only specimen of these hymnals is currently in the Seminary Library in Ljubljana where they were again discovered by Marijan Smolik in 1968. These same hymnals were reprinted in 1990 by Alojz Jembrih (1947-) who added an extensive epilogue in the edition of National and University Library in Zagreb, Croatian Cultural Association in Burgenland, and Kršćanska sadašnjost in Zagreb. On the 400th anniversary of Gergur Mekinić's death, we discuss these hymnals and their author. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
