Multi-kilojoule, multi-picosecond short-pulse lasers, such as the National Ignition Facility-Advanced Radiographic Capability laser and the OMEGA-Extended Performance laser, which have been constructed over the last two decades, enable exciting opportunities to produce high-brightness, high-energy laser-driven proton sources for applications in high-energy-density science like proton fast ignition for inertial fusion energy, particle radiography, and materials science studies. Results on these platforms have demonstrated enhanced accelerated proton energies and electron temperatures when compared to established scaling laws. Recent work has developed a new scaling for proton TNSA in the multi-ps regime. However, this new physics in the multi-ps regime motivates the need to understand the origin of the enhancement in proton energies. Toward this goal, this work presents the first measurements of the TNSA accelerating sheath field in the multi-ps regime for pulse durations of 0.6, 5, and 10 ps. This measurement was achieved by using a separate TNSA proton source to radiograph the spatiotemporal profile of the accelerating sheath that is responsible for proton acceleration. The use of stacked radiochromic film detectors allows for a discrete time profile of the radiographs, thus enabling the measurement of the temporal and spatial evolution of the accelerating field. In performing this measurement, we extract quantities such as the sheath strength as a function of time and pulse duration, which shows that longer pulse durations sustain a stronger electric field for a longer duration when compared to sub-ps laser pulses, which may enable the observed boosted proton energies and proton conversion efficiencies. The PROBIES diagnostic is a new, highly flexible, imaging and energy spectrometer designed for laser-accelerated protons. The diagnostic can detect low-mode spatial variations in the proton beam profile while resolving multiple energies on a single detector or more. When a radiochromic film stack is employed for "single-shot mode," the energy resolution of the stack can be greatly increased while reducing the need for large numbers of films; for example, a recently deployed version allowed for 180 unique energy measurements spanning ∼3 to 75 MeV with <0.4 MeV resolution using just 20 films vs 180 for a comparable traditional film and filter stack. When utilized with a scintillator, the diagnostic can be run in high-rep-rate (>Hz rate) mode to recover nine proton energy bins. We also demonstrate a deep learning-based method to analyze data from synthetic PROBIES images with greater than 95% accuracy on sub-millisecond timescales and retrained with experimental data to analyze real-world images on sub-millisecond time-scales with comparable accuracy. Ion acceleration from high intensity short pulse laser interactions is of great interest due to a number of applications, and there has been significant work carried out with laser energies up to a few 100 J with 10's of femtosecond to 1 ps pulse durations. Here, we report results from an experiment at the OMEGA EP laser, where laser energy and pulse length were varied from 100 to 1250 J and 0.7–30 ps, respectively, in the moderate (2 × 10 17 – 2 × 10 18 W / cm 2 ) laser intensity regime. Ions and electrons were simultaneously measured from disk targets made of CH and CD by a Thomson parabola and a magnetic spectrometer, respectively. Measurements showed that the electron temperature, T e (MeV), has a dependence on the laser energy, E L (J), and pulse duration, τ L (ps), and its empirical scaling was found to be 0.015 × E L 0.90 τ L − 0.48 . The maximum proton and deuteron energies are linearly dependent on the electron temperature, (5.60 ± 0.26) × T e and (3.17 ± 0.18) × T e , respectively. A significant increase in proton numbers with the laser energy was also observed. The increase in the maximum proton energy and proton count with higher energy longer duration pulses presented in this article shows that such laser conditions have a great advantage for applications, such as the proton radiograph, in the moderate laser intensity regime. A scaling study of short-pulse laser-driven proton and electron acceleration was conducted as a function of pulse duration, laser energy, and laser intensity in the multi-picosecond (ps) regime (∼0.8 ps–20 ps). Maximum proton energies significantly greater than established scaling laws were observed, consistent with observations at other multi-ps laser facilities. In addition, maximum proton energies and electron temperatures in this regime were found to be strongly dependent on the laser pulse duration and preplasma conditions. A modified proton scaling model is presented that is able to better represent the accelerated proton characteristics in this multi-ps regime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Proton beams driven by chirped pulse amplified lasers have multi-picosecond duration and can isochorically and volumetrically heat material samples, potentially providing an approach for creating samples of warm dense matter with conditions not present on Earth. Envisioned on a larger scale, they could heat fusion fuel to achieve ignition. We have shown in an experiment that a kilojoule-class, multi-picosecond short pulse laser is particularly effective for heating materials. The proton beam can be focussed via target design to achieve exceptionally high flux, important for the applications mentioned. The laser irradiated spherically curved diamond-like-carbon targets with intensity 4 × 1018 W/cm2, producing proton beams with 3 MeV slope temperature. A Cu witness foil was positioned behind the curved target, and the gap between was either empty or spanned with a structure. With a structured target, the total emission of Cu Kα fluorescence was increased 18 fold and the emission profile was consistent with a tightly focussed beam. Transverse proton radiography probed the target with ps order temporal and 10 μm spatial resolution, revealing the fast-acting focussing electric field. Complementary particle-in-cell simulations show how the structures funnel protons to the tight focus. The beam of protons and neutralizing electrons induce the bright Kα emission observed and heat the Cu to 100 eV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A neutron source for neutron resonance spectroscopy has been developed using high-intensity, short-pulse lasers. This technique will allow robust measurement of interior ion temperature of laser-shocked materials and provide insight into material equation of state. The neutron generation technique uses laser-accelerated protons to create neutrons in LiF through (p,n) reactions. The incident proton beam has been diagnosed using radiochromic film. This distribution is used as the input for a (p,n) neutron prediction code which is validated with experimentally measured neutron yields. The calculation infers a total fluence of 1.8×109 neutrons, which are expected to be sufficient for neutron resonance spectroscopy temperature measurements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
