In the northwestern sector of the Zagros foreland basin, axial fluvial systems initially delivered fine‐grained sediments from northwestern source regions into a contiguous basin, and later transverse fluvial systems delivered coarse‐grained sediments from northeastern sources into a structurally partitioned basin by fold‐thrust deformation. Here we integrate sedimentologic, stratigraphic, palaeomagnetic and geochronologic data from the northwestern Zagros foreland basin to define the Neogene history of deposition and sediment routing in response to progressive advance of the Zagros fold‐thrust belt. This study constrains the depositional environments, timing of deposition and provenance of nonmarine clastic deposits of the Injana (Upper Fars), Mukdadiya (Lower Bakhtiari) and Bai‐Hasan (Upper Bakhtiari) Formations in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. Sediments of the Injana Formation (~12.4–7.75 Ma) were transported axially (orogen‐parallel) from northwest to southeast by meandering and low‐sinuosity channel belt system. In contrast, during deposition of the Mukdadiya Formation (~7.75–5 Ma), sediments were delivered transversely (orogen‐perpendicular) from northeast to southwest by braided and low‐sinuosity channel belt system in distributive fluvial megafans. By ~5 Ma, the northwestern Zagros foreland basin became partitioned by growth of the Mountain Front Flexure and considerable gravel was introduced in localized alluvial fans derived from growing topographic highs. Foredeep accumulation rates during deposition of the Injana, Mukdadiya and Bai‐Hasan Formations averaged 350, 400 and 600 m/Myr respectively, suggesting accelerated accommodation generation in a rapidly subsiding basin governed by flexural subsidence. Detrital zircon U‐Pb age spectra show that in addition to sources of Mesozoic‐Cenozoic cover strata, the Injana Formation was derived chiefly from Palaeozoic‐Precambrian (including Carboniferous and latest Neoproterozoic) strata in an axial position to the northwest, likely from the Bitlis‐Puturge Massif and broader Eastern Anatolia. In contrast, the Mukdadiya and Bai‐Hasan Formations yield distinctive Palaeogene U‐Pb age peaks, particularly in the southeastern sector of the study region, consistent with transverse delivery from the arc‐related terranes of the Walash and Naopurdan volcano‐sedimentary groups (Gaveh‐Rud domain?) and Urumieh‐Dokhtar magmatic arc to the northeast. These temporal and spatial variations in stratigraphic framework, depositional environments, sediment routing and compositional provenance reveal a major drainage reorganization during Neogene shortening in the Zagros fold‐thrust belt. Whereas axial fluvial systems initially dominated the foreland basin during early orogenesis in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, transverse fluvial systems were subsequently established and delivered major sediment volumes to the foreland as a consequence of the abrupt deformation advance and associated topographic growth in the Zagros. The southern Central Andes recorded retroarc shortening, basin evolution, and magmatic arc migration during Neogene changes in subduction. At 31–33°S, above the modern flat‐slab segment, spatial and temporal linkages between thin‐ and thick‐skinned foreland shortening, basement‐involved exhumation of the main Cordillera, and lower‐crustal hinterland thickening remain poorly resolved. We integrate new geochronological and thermochronological data for thrust sheets and Neogene foreland basin fill with structural, sedimentological, and passive seismic results to reconstruct the exhumation history and evaluate potential geometric linkages across structural domains. 40Ar/39Ar ages for volcanic horizons and zircon U‐Pb ages for synorogenic clastic deposits in the Manantiales Basin constrain the minimum duration of synorogenic sedimentation to ~22–14 Ma. Detrital zircon age distributions record sequential unroofing of hinterland thrust sheets until ~15 Ma, followed by eastward (cratonward) advance of the deformation front, shutoff of western sediment sources, and a shift from fluvial to alluvial fan deposition at ~14 Ma. Apatite (U‐Th)/He cooling ages confirm rapid exhumation of basement‐involved structural blocks and basin partitioning by ~14–5 Ma, consistent with the timing of the Manantiales facies and provenance shifts and a coeval (~12–9 Ma) pulse of thin‐skinned shortening and exhumation previously identified in the eastern foreland. Late Miocene–Pliocene (~8–2 Ma) cooling ages along the Chile‐Argentina border point to hinterland uplift during the latest stage of Andean orogenesis. Finally, geophysical constraints on crustal architecture and low‐temperature thermochronometry results are compatible with a hybrid thin‐ and thick‐skinned décollement spanning retroarc domains. Abstract The southern Central Andes of Argentina and Chile (27–40°S) are the product of deformation, arc magmatism, and basin evolution above a long-lived subduction system. With sufficient timing and provenance constraints, Andean stratigraphic and structural records enable delineation of Mesozoic-Cenozoic variations in subsidence and tectonic regime. For the La Ramada Basin in the High Andes at ∼31–33°S, new assessments of provenance and depositional age provided by detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology help resolve deformational patterns and subsidence mechanisms over the past ∼200 Myr. Marine and nonmarine clastic deposits recorded the unroofing of basin margins and sediment contributions from the Andean magmatic arc during Late Triassic to Early Cretaceous extension, thermal subsidence, and possible slab rollback. Subsequent sediment delivery from the Coastal Cordillera corresponded with initial flexural accommodation in the La Ramada Basin during Andean shortening of late Early Cretaceous to Late Cretaceous age. The architecture of the foreland basin was influenced by the distribution of precursor extensional depocenters, suggesting that inherited basin geometries provided important controls on later flexural subsidence and basin evolution. Following latest Cretaceous to early Paleogene tectonic quiescence and a depositional hiatus, newly dated deposits in the western La Ramada Basin provide evidence for a late Paleogene episode of intra-arc and proximal retroarc extension (development of the Abanico Basin, principally in Chile, at ∼28–44°S). Inversion of this late Paleogene extensional basin system during Neogene compression indicates the southern Central Andes were produced by at least two punctuated episodes of shortening and uplift of Late Cretaceous and Neogene age. This study analyzes detrital zircon U–Pb age populations from Andean rivers to assess whether active synorogenic sedimentation accurately records proportional contributions from varied bedrock source units across different drainage areas. Samples of modern river sand were collected from west-central Argentina (28–33°S), where the Andes are characterized by active uplift and deposition in diverse contractional provinces, including (1) hinterland, (2) wedge-top, (3) proximal foreland, and (4) distal broken foreland basin settings. Potential controls on sediment provenance were evaluated by comparing river U–Pb age distributions with predicted age spectra generated by a sediment mixing model weighted by relative catchment exposure (outcrop) areas for different source units. Several statistical measures (similarity, likeness, and cross-correlation) are employed to compare how well the area-weighted model predicts modern river age populations. (1) Hinterland basin provenance is influenced by local relief generated along thrust-bounded ranges and high zircon fertility of exposed crystalline basement. (2) Wedge-top (piggyback) basin provenance is controlled by variable lithologic durability among thrust-belt bedrock sources and recycled basin sediments. (3) Proximal foreland (foredeep) basin provenance of rivers and fluvial megafans accurately reflect regional bedrock distributions, with limited effects of zircon fertility and lithologic durability in large (>20,000 km 2 ) second-order drainage systems. (4) In distal broken segments of the foreland basin, regional provenance signatures from thrust-belt and hinterland areas are diluted by local contributions from foreland basement-cored uplifts. The temporal transition from backarc extension to retroarc shortening is a fundamental process in the evolution of many Andean-type convergent margins. This switch in tectonic regime is preserved in the 5–7 km thick Mesozoic-Cenozoic stratigraphic record of west-central Argentina at 34–36°S, where the northern Neuquén Basin and succeeding Cenozoic foreland succession chronicle a long history of fluctuating depositional systems and diverse sediment source regions during Andean orogenesis. New findings from sediment provenance and facies analyses are integrated with detrital zircon U-Pb geochronological results from 16 samples of Jurassic through Miocene clastic deposits to delineate the progressive exhumation of the evolving Andean magmatic arc, retroarc fold-thrust belt, and foreland province. Abrupt changes in provenance and depositional conditions can be reconciled with a complex Mesozoic-Cenozoic history of extension, postextensional thermal subsidence, punctuated tectonic inversion, thick- and thin-skinned shortening, overlapping igneous activity, and alternating phases of basin accumulation, sediment bypass, and erosion. U-Pb age distributions constrain the depositional ages of Cenozoic units and reveal a prolonged late middle Eocene to earliest Miocene (roughly 40–20 Ma) hiatus in the retroarc foreland basin. This stratigraphic gap is expressed as a regional disconformity that marks a pronounced shift in depositional conditions and sediment sources, from (i) slow Paleocene–middle Eocene accumulation of distal fluviolacustrine sediments (Pircala and Coihueco Formations) contributed from far western magmatic arc sources (Cretaceous–Paleogene volcanic rocks) and subordinate eastern basement rocks (Permian-Triassic Choiyoi igneous complex) to (ii) rapid Miocene–Quaternary accumulation of proximal fluvial to megafan sediments (Agua de la Piedra, Loma Fiera, and Tristeza Formations) recycled from emerging western thrust-belt sources of Mesozoic basin fill originally derived from basement and magmatic arc sources. The mid-Cenozoic stratigraphic gap signified ∼20 Myr of nondeposition, potentially during passage of a flexural forebulge or during neutral to extensional conditions driven by mechanical decoupling and a possible retreating-slab configuration along the Nazca-South America plate boundary. Neogene eastward propagation of the Malargüe fold-thrust belt involved basement inversion with geometrically and kinematically linked thin-skinned shortening at shallow foreland levels, including late Miocene deposition of accurately dated 10.5–7.5 Ma growth strata and ensuing displacement along the frontal emergent and blind thrust structures. Subsequent partitioning and exhumation of Cenozoic clastic fill of the Malargüe foreland basin has been driven by inboard advance of arc magmatism and Pliocene-Quaternary uplift of the San Rafael basement block farther east. New geochronological constraints on upper crustal exhumation in the southern Rocky Mountains help delineate the latest Cretaceous-Paleogene history of drainage reorganization and landscape evolution during Laramide flat-slab subduction beneath western North America. Detrital zircon U-Pb results for the Raton basin of southern Colorado and northern New Mexico define the inception of coarse-grained siliciclastic sedimentation and a distinctive shift in provenance, from distal to proximal sources, that recorded shortening-related uplift and unroofing along the Laramide deformation front of the northern Sangre de Cristo Mountains. This Maastrichtian-early Paleocene (~70-65 Ma) change-from distal foreland accumulation of sediment derived from the thin-skinned Cordilleran (Sevier) fold-thrust belt to coarse-grained sedimentation proximal to a Laramide basement block uplift-reflects cratonward (eastward) deformation advance and reorganization of drainage systems that supplied a large volume of Paleocene-lower Eocene sediments to the Gulf of Mexico. The timing of unroofing along the eastern deformation front is synchronous with basement-involved shortening across the interior of the Laramide province, suggesting abrupt wholesale uplift rather than a systematic inboard advance of deformation. The growth and infilling of broken foreland basins within the interior and margins of the Laramide province had a significant impact on continental-scale drainage systems, as several ponded/axial Laramide basins trapped large volumes of sediment and induced reorganization of major source-to-sink sediment pathways. Abstract: Sediment provenance analysis remains a powerful method for testing hypotheses on the temporal and spatial evolution of uplifted source regions, but issues such as recycling, nonunique sources, and pre- and post-depositional modifications may complicate interpretation of results from individual provenance techniques. Convergent retroarc systems commonly contain sediment sources that are sufficiently diverse (continental magmatic arc, fold–thrust belt, and stable craton) to enable explicit provenance assessments. In this paper, we combine detrital zircon U–Pb geochronology, heavy mineral identification, Nd isotopic analyses, conventional sandstone petrography, and paleocurrent measurements to reconstruct the clastic provenance history of a long-lived sedimentary basin now exposed in an intermontane zone of the northern Andean hinterland of Colombia. The Middle Magdalena Valley basin, situated between the Central Cordillera and Eastern Cordillera, contains a 5–10km-thick succession of Upper Cretaceous to Quaternary fill. The integrated techniques show a pronounced change in provenance during the Paleocene transition from the lower to upper Lisama Formation. We interpret this as a shift from an eastern cratonic source to a western Andean source composed of magmatic-arc rocks uplifted during initial shortening of the Central Cordillera. The appearance of detrital chloritoid and a shift to more negative εNd(t=0) values in middle Eocene strata of the middle La Paz Formation are attributed to shortening-related exhumation of a continental basement block (La Cira–Infantas paleohigh), now buried, along the axis of the Magdalena Valley. The diverse provenance proxies also show distinct changes during middle to late Eocene deposition of the Esmeraldas Formation that likely reflect initial rock uplift and exhumation of the fold–thrust belt defining the Eastern Cordillera. Upsection, detrital zircon U–Pb ages and heavy mineral assemblages for Oligocene and younger clastic deposits indicate that the Mesozoic sedimentary cover of the Eastern Cordillera was recycled during continued Cenozoic shortening. Our multidisciplinary provenance study refines the tectonic history of the Colombian Andes and demonstrates that uncertainties related to sediment recycling, nonunique sources, source heterogeneity, and climate in interpreting provenance data can be minimized via an integrated approach. The fault-bounded Cianzo basin represents a Cenozoic depocenter between the Puna plateau and Eastern Cordillera of northern Argentina. Analysis of fold-thrust relationships, nonmarine sedimentation, and detrital provenance at 23-24°S helps constrain the origin, interconnectedness, and subsequent uplift and exhumation of the Cianzo basin, a potential analog for intermontane hinterland basins in the Andes. Structural mapping reveals a plunging syncline within the >6000-m-thick, upward coarsening Cenozoic clastic succession in the shared footwall of the N-striking, E-directed Cianzo thrust fault and transverse, NE-striking Hornocal fault. Growth strata within upper Miocene levels indicate syncontractional accumulation adjacent to the Hornocal fault. Measured stratigraphic sections show upsection changes from (1) paleosol-rich, distal-fluvial sandstones (∼400 m Paleocene-Eocene Santa Bárbara Subgroup) to (2) braided fluvial sandstones and mudstones (∼1400 m upper Eocene-Oligocene Casa Grande Formation) to (3) distributary fluvial megafan sandstones and conglomerates (∼3300 m upper Oligocene-Miocene Río Grande Formation) to (4) alluvial fan conglomerates (∼1600 m upper Miocene Pisungo Formation). The 40Ar/39Ar geochronological results for interbedded tuffs indicate continuous Río Grande deposition from at least 16.34 ± 0.71 to 9.69 ± 0.05 Ma. Sandstone petrographic results define distinct upsection trends in lithic and feldspar content, potentially distinguishing the Western Cordillera magmatic arc from Puna-Eastern Cordillera thrust-belt sources. In addition to growth stratal relationships and 40Ar/39Ar ages, conglomerate clast compositions reflect distinct lithologic differences, constraining activation of the Cianzo thrust and coeval reverse slip on the reactivated (inverted) Hornocal fault. Finally, detrital zircon U-Pb ages, paleocurrents, and facies patterns distinguish local from distal sources, revealing a systematic forelandward (eastward) advance of Eocene through upper Miocene fold-thrust deformation. Abstract: The Central Cordillera and Eastern Cordillera of the northern Andes form the topographic flanks of the north-trending Magdalena Valley Basin. Constraining the growth of these ranges and intervening basin has implications for Andean shortening and the transformation from a foreland to hinterland basin configuration. We present sedimentological, paleocurrent, and sandstone petrographic results from Cenozoic type localities to provide insights into the tectonic history of the northern Middle Magdalena Valley Basin of Colombia. In the Nuevo Mundo Syncline, the mid-Paleocene transition from marine to nonmarine deposystems of the Lisama Formation corresponds with a paleocurrent shift from northward to eastward transport. These changes match detrital geochronological evidence for a contemporaneous shift from cratonic (Amazonian) to orogenic (Andean) provenance, suggesting initial shortening-related uplift of the Central Cordillera and foreland basin generation in the Magdalena Valley by mid-Paleocene time. Subsequent establishment of a meandering fluvial system is recorded in lower–middle Eocene strata of the lower La Paz Formation. Eastward paleocurrents in mid-Paleocene through uppermost Eocene fluvial deposits indicate a continuous influence of western sediment source areas. However, at the upper middle Eocene (∼40 Ma) boundary between the lower and upper La Paz Formation, sandstone compositions show a drastic decrease in lithic content, particularly lithic volcanic fragments. This change is accompanied by a facies shift from mixed channel and overbank facies to thick, amalgamated braided fluvial deposits of possible fluvial megafans, reflecting changes in both the composition and proximity of western sediment sources. We attribute these modifications to the growing influence of exhumed La Cira-Infantas paleohighs in the axial Magdalena Valley, features presently buried beneath upper Eocene–Quaternary basin fill along the western flank of the Nuevo Mundo Syncline. In uppermost Eocene strata of the lower Esmeraldas Formation, paleocurrents show a sharp reversal from eastward to dominantly westward transport that persisted into the Neogene. The Esmeraldas also records a change to more-distal, floodplain-dominated deposition of finer sediments. These adjustments are interpreted to reflect burial of the La Cira-Infantas highs and onset of Eastern Cordillera exhumation, resulting in a transition from foreland to hinterland basin conditions in the Magdalena Valley. The lack of significant variation in sandstone compositions suggests a bulk-rock compositional similarity between the La Cira-Infantas paleohighs (subsurface Magdalena Valley) and the Eastern Cordillera. Collectively, the data presented here refine previous thermochronologic and provenance studies and suggest that major uplift-induced exhumation in the Central Cordillera and Eastern Cordillera commenced by the mid-Paleocene and latest Eocene, respectively. The Cretaceous-Cenozoic evolution of the Patagonian broken foreland basin system at 42–43°S in the northern Chubut province of Argentina is associated with variable retroarc phases of fold-thrust belt shortening, extension, and basement uplift during changes in the dynamics of oceanic slab subduction. Basement inheritance and progressive shallowing of an east-dipping subducting slab are important mechanisms of foreland partitioning, as dictated by the preexisting (pre-Andean) structural architecture and forelandward (eastward) advance of Late Cretaceous arc magmatism. Previously recognized growth strata help define the timing of fold-thrust belt shortening and retroarc basement-involved uplift, but the precise consequences for sediment routing remain poorly understood, with uncertainties in patterns of basin evolution before, during, and after shallowing and resteepening of the subducting slab. In this study, distinctive sediment source regions and magmatic histories enable evaluation of the stratigraphic and tectonic evolution of the retroarc foreland basin using new provenance results, maximum depositional ages, and isotopic signatures from detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology and Lu-Hf geochemical analyses. A compilation of published bedrock crystallization ages and distributions of metamorphic and igneous basement rocks identify: a western source region defined by the Andean magmatic arc and associated pre-Andean basement; and an eastern source region consisting of intraplate magmatic units and the North Patagonian Massif. We demonstrate that Aptian-Cenomanian retroarc basin fill was derived principally from the basement massif and intraplate volcanic units to the east, followed by a Late Cretaceous (Campanian-Maastrichtian) reversal in sedimentary polarity and subsequent exclusive derivation from the Andean arc and orogenic belt to the west. Late Cretaceous-Paleocene slab shallowing and arc cessation was succeeded by late Eocene–earliest Miocene extension during slab rollback and renewal of arc magmatism. Thereafter, Miocene sedimentation was closely linked to shortening in the Andean fold-thrust belt. Within the retroarc succession, new U-Pb ages provide estimates of depositional ages for Lower Cretaceous through Miocene stratigraphic units. Finally, in addition to U-Pb provenance and chronostratigraphic constraints, zircon Hf isotopic signatures from the detrital record provide confirmation of a Cretaceous-Cenozoic history involving: (1) initial establishment of a continental magmatic arc; (2) transition from a neutral to compressive tectonic regime; (3) shallowing of the subducting slab and arc cessation during retroarc basement partitioning; (4) arc retreat and foreland basin abandonment during slab rollback (with modest extension and crustal thinning); and (5) final renewed shortening during arc rejuvenation. • Detrital zircon U-Pb ages demonstrate Late Cretaceous reversal in sediment polarity. • Depositional ages for growth strata constrain thrust-belt and intraforeland uplift. • Hf isotopes record tectonic reorganization and overriding plate deformational mode. A clear understanding of the provenance of late Cenozoic Chinese loess and the underlying Red Clay deposits will shed light on the history and mechanisms of Asian aridification. Although much progress has been made in understanding the source of Quaternary loess on the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP), the provenance of the underlying upper Miocene–Pliocene Red Clay sequence is largely unknown. Here we present the first provenance history of the Red Clay sequence based on zircon U–Pb ages from the central CLP. Visual and statistical analyses of the U–Pb age populations and comparison with results from potential source regions reveals that (1) the lowermost Red Clay of the late Miocene (depositional age of ∼8 Ma) is likely sourced from the nearby Liupan Mountains and the Qaidam Basin; (2) the middle Red Clay (5.5–4 Ma) of the early-mid Pliocene is sourced mainly from the Taklamakan desert, transported via lower-level westerly winds; (3) the upper Red Clay of the late Pliocene (∼3 Ma) is sourced from mixed areas, although western source materials from middle-northern Tibetan plateau (including Qaidam Desert sediments and materials eroded from the Qilian Mountains) sediments appear to dominate; and (4) the Quaternary loess is also sourced from mixed source regions, albeit with dominant northern CLP proximal desert sediments transported via winter monsoon winds, which in turn may be transported from mountain source regions of the northeastern Tibet and Gobi Altai via major river systems. This long term shift in sources suggests a progressive eastward aridification during the Pliocene in Asia with the specific timing of provenance shifts synchronous with large-scale climatic transitions and Tibetan uplift, demonstrating that Asian desertification is controlled by both factors. The Magallanes-Austral foreland basin preserves an important record of orogenesis and landscape evolution in the Patagonian Andes of Chile and Argentina. Throughout the retroarc foreland basin, a regional disconformity with little to no angular discordance separates Upper Cretaceous–lower Paleocene strata from overlying deposits of diachronous Eocene to Miocene age. Here we report detrital zircon U-Pb geochronological results for 11 sandstone samples, and vitrinite reflectance data for 6 samples of organic matter from a fossiliferous dinosaur-bearing mixed nonmarine and marine clastic succession in the Río de las Chinas valley (50–51°S) of central-southern Patagonia to: (1) determine the timing and duration of the unconformity using U-Pb maximum depositional age constraints, (2) reconstruct sediment provenance and dispersal patterns, (3) assess possible temporal variations in arc magmatism, (4) evaluate the amount of sedimentary overburden removed during unconformity development, and (5) confirm the presence of a fossiliferous southern hemisphere Cretaceous–Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary site. Samples from the Dorotea Formation yield maximum depositional ages spanning Maastrichtian to Danian time (with ages as young as ∼65–63 Ma), confirming preservation of the K/Pg boundary in a section with recently discovered fossils of dinosaurs, other terrestrial vertebrates, and plants. Samples from directly above the unconformity in the Man Aike Formation, yield middle Eocene maximum depositional ages (with a prominent 45–40 Ma age cluster), indicating a long-lived ∼20 Myr hiatus representative of nondeposition or erosion. Analyses of organic matter preserved in multiple coal horizons of the uppermost Dorotea Formation show consistently low vitrinite reflectance values, requiring limited sedimentary burial, consistent with nondeposition or sediment bypass rather than deposition and later erosional removal of a previously proposed thick package of Paleocene to middle Eocene clastic material. On the basis of regional trends in the age and geometry of the unconformity, timing of arc magmatism, and temporal variations in sediment provenance, we consider a range of potential mechanisms for unconformity genesis, including (1) shortening-related uplift of the frontal fold-thrust belt, (2) cratonward advance of a flexural forebulge, (3) accommodation changes driven by regional or eustatic variations in sea level, (4) ridge collision and slab-window genesis, (5) isostatic rebound during tectonic quiescence (or minor extension), or (6) regional foreland uplift during flat-slab subduction. • Detrital zircon U-Pb ages in the Río de las Chinas valley support the presence of the K/Pg boundary. • U-Pb age spectra indicate two lulls in magmatic productivity from ca. 140–115 Ma and ca. 60–45 Ma. • A major unconformity is constrained to ∼20 Myr between the early Paleocene and middle Eocene. • Results from vitrinite reflectance data suggest limited removal of sedimentary overburden during unconformity genesis.
