ALCOHOLISM , *COVID-19 pandemic , *PSYCHOLOGICAL stress , *TOBACCO use , *ALCOHOL drinking , *AGE groups - Abstract
Abstract: Aim : The restrictions during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic had a massive impact on the daily life of the general population. In this situation, increased alcohol or tobacco consumption represented a possible coping strategy to deal with the unpleasant feelings experienced. Therefore, in this study, we examined changes in alcohol and tobacco use among smokers during the spring 2020 lockdown. Methods: Smokers aged between 18 and 80 years were eligible to participate in the anonymous online survey on changes in tobacco and alcohol consumption during the lockdown in spring 2020. The survey was available online between April 8 and May 11, 2020. Results: Out of the 913 participating smokers, 41.8 % reported smoking more during the lockdown, and 39.5 % of smokers reported drinking more alcohol than during the period before. The largest group, 22.02 % of all study participants, reported increasing both their tobacco and alcohol use during the lockdown. An increased sense of stress related to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, being in the group aged between 25–34 years, and doubting the usefulness of the restriction measures increased the likelihood of a combined increase in tobacco and alcohol use. Conclusions: Based on these findings, treatment providers should alert smokers to the health risks, as a result of a combined increase in alcohol and tobacco use. In particular, the increased risk for developing alcohol dependence should be addressed and their tobacco and alcohol use behavior should be monitored to detect an alcohol use disorder early. - Abstract
Background: The outbreak of the COVID-19 disease and the rapid spread of the inducing coronavirus SARS-CoV‑2 threatens not only people's physical health but also their mental health. Its influence on incidence and course of existing illnesses in the psychiatric outpatient sector in Germany is still unknown. Methods: The medical reports of 682 persons in psychiatric treatment were retrospectively investigated, regarding their subjective response to this pandemic and its clinical relevance. Results: Of the patients 60.5% (n = 378) experienced greater psychological stress, 14.5% (n = 99) reported fear of the SARS-CoV‑2 and the possible danger of infection, 25.5% (n = 174) reported fear resulting from the protective measures taken (lock down) and 4.3% (n = 29) reported fear of both. This differed significantly across diagnoses: people with anxiety disorders reported significantly greater stress as well as greater fear of the virus, whereas people with psychoses were significantly less affected than the other patients. Of the participants 43.7% (n = 132) were so strongly affected that acute treatment had to be implemented and 6.0% (n = 18) had to be referred to inpatient care. Discussion: People with mental illnesses are particularly vulnerable to the psychological strain of the COVID-19 pandemic. Long-term studies on the further course of disease will be necessary. Additional studies that test interventions to build resilience in this population will also be needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

COGNITIVE testing , *MEDICAL students , *TEST anxiety , *PERIODIC health examinations , *COGNITIVE Abilities Test , *CRONBACH'S alpha , *MEASURING instruments - Abstract
Aim of the study: Test anxiety expresses itself in a variety of physical and cognitive processes. Due to its influence on test performance, the cognitive component in particular can have a negative impact on those affected. A measuring instrument for this is not yet available in the German-speaking world but does exist in the form of the "Cognitive Test Anxiety Scale" (CTAS), among other languages, in English. The aim of Maximiliansthis work was the creation and psychometric review of a German version of the scale (G-CTAS). Methods: A German translation of the scale was created using a forward- backward procedure. Statistical investigations were then carried out on a cohort of medical students, which included an item analysis with LMUcalculation of difficulty, variance and item discrimination as well as the determination of the scale's internal consistency. The criterion validity was examined using test performance and gender-specific differences. Results: The final version contains 26 matching items with acceptable item parameters (mean values >1.46, <3.13; variances >0.48; part- whole-discrimination-indices >0.37). Cronbach's alpha was 0.92, the scale was therefore found to be a reliable measuring instrument. The scale validity could be confirmed by significant differences (p<0.01) between total values of female and male participants as well as significant correlations (p<0.001) between total values and test performance in the written and oral part of the first state examination. Conclusion: With G-CTAS a suitable measuring instrument for cognitive test anxiety within the German-speaking world is available, which can be used, among other things, for studies concerning the relationship between stress, exams and test anxiety among medical students. - Abstract
Background: Psychological stress at work is associated with detrimental and health-impairing consequences for employees. Objective: In this study major stress factors and the resource job control at the workplace of surgeons and facets of mental health were examined and compared to benchmark results of a large reference sample. Method: Data were collected by a representative online survey among surgeons throughout Germany who were contacted via the Professional Association of German Surgeons. In total 643 surgeons from different organizations and different disciplines completed the questionnaire that was developed using well-validated instruments. Results: Time pressure was the most meaningful stress factor for surgeons. Moreover, the results for medical assistants showed adverse stress combinations of high goal uncertainty and low job control as well as high emotional exhaustion and low job satisfaction. In addition, the results indicated that surgeons in single and group practices as well as in outpatient healthcare centers have less stressors and more job resources. Conclusion: The survey results suggest high levels of burnout risk for German surgeons, especially among medical assistants and medical specialists from large hospitals. In order to maintain a high quality in the surgical disciplines, a concerted effort by all players in the healthcare system is necessary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

Background Based on a feminist approach, we analyzed the experiences of workplace bullying suffered by women front-line healthcare professionals dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic. We start from studies that show that women make up 70% of the global health workforce, 85% in the area of nursing, and 90% in the case of social care workers. An unequivocal need thus exists to address gender issues regarding the composition of the labor force in the health area. The pandemic has aggravated recurring problems involving healthcare professionals at the various caregiving levels, such as mental harassment (bullying) and its effects on mental health. Methods Data were gathered from an online survey of a convenience (non-probability) sample composed of 1,430 volunteer respondents, all women that work in the public health system in Brazil. The analyses and discussions involved the responses to a questionnaire containing 12 closed-ended questions and one open-ended question. Results The results revealed a context of workplace bullying aggravated by precarious material, institutional and organizational conditions in the area of health services against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil. This context has variously led to aggression, isolation, heavy workloads, and invasion of privacy, humiliation, persecution and fear as it was possible to see, mainly, in the answers to the study’s open-ended question. This situation degrades both work relations and the integrity of the healthcare professionals who work on the front line to treat Covid-19 cases. Conclusion We conclude that bullying is a psychosocial phenomenon that heightens the oppression and subordination still experienced by women in the contemporary context, but with new hues in a scenario of frontline response to Covid-19. more...

Security issues and human lives have always been inseparable. The feeling of security is the basic need of every individual. The outbreak of the pandemic has had major consequences for the operation of enterprises and their employees. The latter have faced a new, unpredictable, and rapidly changing situation, which has increased the level of fear and decreased the perception of security. The purpose of the research was to evaluate the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the perception of security of young Polish employees. To rate the level of security, the 5-degree Likert Scale was used. Furthermore, an attempt was made to determine whether actions undertaken by employers with respect to employee security improvement have been sufficient, or if it is necessary to expand the scope of support. In the course of analyses, it was established that the pandemic reduced the level of working conditions and economic security and had a negative impact on the physical and mental wellbeing of young employees. more...

Objective: This study examines gender and socioeconomic inequalities in parental psychological wellbeing (parenting stress and psychological distress) during the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany. Background: The dramatic shift of childcare and schooling responsibility from formal institutions to private households during the pandemic has put families under enormous stress and raised concerns about caregivers' health and wellbeing. Despite the overwhelming media attention to families’ wellbeing, to date limited research has examined parenting stress and parental psychological distress during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in Germany. Method: We analyzed four waves of panel data (N= 1,771) from an opt-in online survey, which was conducted between March 2020 and April 2021. Multivariable OLS regressions were used to estimate variations in the pandemic's effects on parenting stress and psychological distress by various demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. Results: Overall, levels of parenting stress and psychological distress increased during the pandemic. During the first and third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, mothers, parents with children younger than 11 years, parents with two or more children, parents working from home as well as parents with financial insecurity experienced higher parenting stress than other sociodemographic groups. Moreover, women, respondents with lower incomes, single parents, and parents with younger children experienced higher levels of psychological distress than other groups. Conclusion: Gender and socioeconomic inequalities in parents' psychological wellbeing increased among the study participants during the pandemic.

The relationship between coping with extreme risks and symptoms of post-traumatic stress in children who experienced the 2017 earthquake in Mexico was examined. One month after the event, 178 children between 11 and 15 years old (M = 12.90, SD = 1.05) from the municipality of Malinalco, were evaluated with Coping Scales Facing Extreme Risks and the Childhood Scale of Symptoms of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in the South of the State of Mexico. The results showed high scores in PTSD, especially in girls, and both, the active and the passive coping rise weakly the presence of symptoms of PTSD. It is suggested analyzing the resilient ability with respect to the exposure to this type of natural disasters, and carry out follow-up studies. more...

Background The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the lives of children and adolescents worldwide. The German COPSY study is among the first population-based longitudinal studies to examine the mental health impact of the pandemic. The objective of the study was to assess changes in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and mental health in children and adolescents and to identify the associated risk and resource factors during the pandemic. Methods A nationwide longitudinal survey was conducted with two waves during the pandemic (May/June 2020 and December 2020/January 2021). In total, n = 1923 children and adolescents aged 7 to 17 years and their parents participated (retention rate from wave 1 to wave 2: 85%). The self-report and parent-proxy surveys assessed HRQoL (KIDSCREEN-10), mental health problems (SDQ with the subscales emotional problems, conduct problems, hyperactivity, and peer problems), anxiety (SCARED), depressive symptoms (CES-DC, PHQ-2) and psychosomatic complaints (HBSC-SCL). Mixed model panel regression analyses were conducted to examine longitudinal changes in mental health and to identify risk and resource factors. Results The HRQoL of children and adolescents decreased during the pandemic, and emotional problems, peer-related mental health problems, anxiety, depressive and psychosomatic symptoms increased over time, however the change in global mental health problems from wave 1 to wave 2 was not significant, and some changes were negligible. Socially disadvantaged children and children of mentally burdened parents were at particular risk of impaired mental health, while female gender and older age were associated with fewer mental health problems. A positive family climate and social support supported the mental health of children and adolescents during the pandemic. Discussion Health promotion, prevention and intervention strategies could support children and adolescents in coping with the pandemic and protect and maintain their mental health. more...

For some time now, mental illnesses have been gaining great importance in companies. The role of working conditions is controversial. The article presents various psychologically stressful work situations that could be identified in a qualitative research project based on several narrative interviews in a longitudinal design. Using two case studies, the interaction of stressful working conditions and individual vulnerability in different work situations is presented. Against this background, the question of causality is discussed. As it addresses responsibilities it is controversial in disputes between employers and employees. At the same time, it is also relevant for a critical sociology. It is argued that sociology, despite correct social constructivist insights, cannot do without causal arguments if it does not want to lose its importance in corporate and other social disputes. The article suggests an understanding in the sense of Critical Realism., AIS-Studien more...

The outbreak of the COVID-19 disease and the rapid spread of the inducing coronavirus SARS-CoV‑2 threatens not only people’s physical health but also their mental health. In response to the Covid‑19 health crisis, the French government has imposed various measures, referred to as social-distancing measures, including a lockdown with the primary objective of reducing face-to-face interactions between people in order to limit the spread of the virus. This paper seeks to determine if the social-distancing measures and lockdown lead to social isolation for certain people and have an impact on French people’s well-being. First, it reveals that the feelings of social isolation have substantially increased in France during this lockdown. Second, it explores the factors that help to explain these changes by developing a predictive model and reveals that living alone, being a woman, being young are factors that explain this increase in felling of social isolation. Third, the estimation of the effects of changes in feelings of social isolation on changes in the reported level of well-being of French respondents during lockdown shows that people who reported feeling more socially isolated than others has the lowest levels of well-being among the French population; and that the increase in people’s feelings of social isolation during lockdown is a factor that has a negative impact on their level of well-being. more...

This article focuses on the long-term effects or, as mentioned in the title, scars of the COVID-19 pandemic. Surveys conducted by youth organisations in July-August 2021 show that the predominant concerns of the youth revolve around mental health, education and employment. The article then dives into the topics centred around the "disconnect" with democracy amongst the young people. Youth organisation's trust in governments has decreased since the start of the pandemic. Several reasons and explanations are brought forward, including a lack of youth representation and inadequate support for vulnerable groups. The article then concludes with an account of what seems to promote an increase in government trust by OECD survey respondents. more...

The outbreak of the COVID-19 disease and the rapid spread of the inducing coronavirus SARS-CoV‑2 threatens not only people's physical health but also their mental health. Its influence on incidence and course of existing illnesses in the psychiatric outpatient sector in Germany is still unknown. The medical reports of 682 persons in psychiatric treatment were retrospectively investigated, regarding their subjective response to this pandemic and its clinical relevance.Of the patients 60.5% (n = 378) experienced greater psychological stress, 14.5% (n = 99) reported fear of the SARS-CoV‑2 and the possible danger of infection, 25.5% (n = 174) reported fear resulting from the protective measures taken (lock down) and 4.3% (n = 29) reported fear of both. This differed significantly across diagnoses: people with anxiety disorders reported significantly greater stress as well as greater fear of the virus, whereas people with psychoses were significantly less affected than the other patients.

Theories on learning styles and types have been integral to discussions on the basics of teaching for nearly 40 years. The learning style typology of Kolb divides learners into four groups (Diverger, Assimilator, Converger and Accomodator), which differ both in terms of their learning behaviour as well as personality and preferences. We studied the sense of coherence and burnout symptoms in medical students of the preclinical semesters (1st to 4th semester) at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen within the context of the observed learning styles. A total of 530 students were interviewed in winter semester 2012/13 using standardized psychometric questionnaires. Our students showed a significant correlation between the respective learning styles and expression of a sense of coherence, as well as cognitive and emotional burnout symptoms. The learning styles of the students differed significantly within these same parameters. We also demonstrated that learning styles and types not only influence study performance, but that there are also relationships to sense of coherence and psychological ailments. A more forward-looking integration of the theory of learning types in the medical education curriculum could positively influence both the performance and psychological well-being of the students. Purpose: Social media brings the whole of the world right into our lives and devices. Sharing common experiences helps normalize our feelings of confusion and a loss of control especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. Methods: This conceptual paper uses content analysis to explore two YouTube influencers, Randy Rainbow and Chris Mann, in how they produce content and provide adaptive leadership to the general public through hope and resilience. Results: Social media influencers have emerged as adaptive leaders and have provided humor and levity during the challenging times of COVID-19. Influencers are content creators that entertain, inspire, and inform their followers through social media platforms. This conceptual paper uses content analysis to explore two YouTube influencers, Randy Rainbow and Chris Mann, in how they produce content and provide adaptive leadership to the general public through hope and resilience. Implications: The social media influencers highlighted personify the adaptive leadership theory of observing from the balcony while interacting on the dance floor. Through the brilliance of their craft these influencers provide clever and entertaining messages of hope with alacrity., SUBMITTED: MAY 2020, REVISION SUBMITTED: JULY 2020, ACCEPTED: AUGUST 2020, REFEREED ANONYMOUSLY, PUBLISHED ONLINE: 30 OCTOBER 2020 more...

Aim of the study: Test anxiety expresses itself in a variety of physical and cognitive processes. Due to its influence on test performance, the cognitive component in particular can have a negative impact on those affected. A measuring instrument for this is not yet available in the German-speaking world but does exist in the form of the “Cognitive Test Anxiety Scale” (CTAS), among other languages, in English. The aim of this work was the creation and psychometric review of a German version of the scale (G-CTAS). Methods: A German translation of the scale was created using a forward-backward procedure. Statistical investigations were then carried out on a cohort of medical students, which included an item analysis with calculation of difficulty, variance and item discrimination as well as the determination of the scale’s internal consistency. The criterion validity was examined using test performance and gender-specific differences. Results: The final version contains 26 matching items with acceptable item parameters (mean values >1.46, 0.48; part-whole-discrimination-indices >0.37). Cronbach's alpha was 0.92, the scale was therefore found to be a reliable measuring instrument. The scale validity could be confirmed by significant differences (p, Zielsetzung: Prüfungsangst äußert sich in einer Vielzahl körperlicher und kognitiver Prozesse. The "new economy" is characterized by increasing levels of nonstandard employment. A significant proportion of employees work very long hours, work with high intensity, or have long commutes to work. Also, many workers struggle to secure adequate, stable employment or good quality jobs, and work evening and night shifts or work multiple jobs in order to make ends meet. This special issue examines the consequences of the new economy for the wellbeing of family and children. The studies included in this special issue address the impact of parents’ nonstandard work schedules (shift work), long work hours, temporary employment, and long commutes to work on parental and child health and wellbeing, relationship satisfaction, work-family balance, and the division of labour., Journal of Family Research, Early View more...

The study examines the effect of long-distance commuting on the division of domestic labor in heterosexual couples. A long journey to work can affect other areas of life. Commuters often have lower life satisfaction and their intimate relationships may be impaired by mental stress. When looking at domestic labor the question arises of who is in charge of managing the household and childcare. Do women still adopt the “lion’s share of housework” or take over the “second shift” if they spend part of the day on long commutes to work and back home? A long commute is defined as a journey to work of at least 45 minutes, daily or several times a week. We present the results of pooled regression analysis and fixed effects regressions conducted on data from the German Panel Analysis of Intimate Relationships and Family Dynamics (pairfam) for the years 2013, 2015, and 2016. The pooled analysis suggests a moderate association between a woman’s long commute and her partner’s engagement in housework and childcare, especially when she commutes daily. Instead of living ‘reversed roles’, the partners share such tasks. However, when the association between a woman’s long commute and her partner’s engagement in childcare is estimated exclusively with fixed regression, it remains significant. If the man is a long-distance commuter, most often his partner is solely responsible for all household tasks. Relative labor market position and income distribution within the couples, as well as adherence to gender roles explain the effects of long-distance commuting on labor division., Journal of Family Research, Early View more...

In times of demographic change, most developed countries are increasingly looking to cover the growing domestic demand for healthcare by hiring nurses from abroad. The evidence concerning the health of immigrant care workers is inconsistent since studies report that it is either better or more impaired than that of their non-immigrant counterparts. This study compared the extent of occupational psychosocial stressors and resources affecting immigrant and non-immigrant homecare nurses. The cross-sectional survey was conducted in the homecare nursing service sector in Hamburg. Psychosocial distress, depressive symptomatology, generalized anxiety, somatic symptom burdens, homecare-specific qualitative stressors, as well as resources, have been measured using a standardized questionnaire. There was no significant difference in the extent of psychosocial distress experienced by immigrant and non-immigrant homecare nurses. Somatic symptom burdens most strongly predicted nurses&rsquo, psychosocial distress, in general. For immigrant nurses, greater influence and freedom at work, as well as fixed-term employment, was related to increased levels of distress, while age, working full time, and working overtime predicted distress in non-immigrant nurses. A functioning relationship with colleagues and superiors had a declining effect on immigrant nurses&rsquo, psychosocial distress, while shift work arrangements benefitted non-immigrant nurses. Even though the extent of psychosocial distress experienced by immigrant and non-immigrant nurses did not significantly differ, the nurse&rsquo, s individual explanatory model of psychosocial health should be considered in every occupational and political context. more...
