SUMMARY Objective To determine if auditory-perceptual voice ratings performed using the GRBAS scale correlate with acoustic and aerodynamic measures of voice. A secondary aim was to examine the relationship between GRBAS ratings and patient-reported quality of life scales. Methods GRBAS ratings, acoustic, aerodynamic and patient-reported quality of life ratings were collected from the University of Wisconsin Madison Voice and Swallow Outcomes Database for 508 adults with voice disorders. Acoustic measures included noise to harmonic ratio, jitter%, shimmer%, highest fundamental frequency (F0) of vocal range, lowest F0 of vocal range, maximum phonation time and dysphonia severity index. Aerodynamic measures included phonation threshold pressure, subglottal pressure, mean transglottal airflow and laryngeal airway resistance. Patient-reported quality of life measures included the Vocal Handicap Index (VHI) and Glottal Function Index (GFI). Results GRBAS ratings were significantly correlated with several acoustic and aerodynamic measures, VHI and GFI. The strongest significant correlations for acoustic measures were observed between GRBAS ratings of overall voice quality and perturbation measures (jitter% r = 0.58, shimmer% r = 0.45, noise to harmonic ratio r = 0.36, Dysphonia Severity Index r = -0.56). The strongest significant correlation for aerodynamic voice measures was observed between GRBAS ratings of breathiness and transglottal airflow (r = 0.23), subglottal pressure (r = 0.49), and phonation threshold pressure (r = 0.26). GRBAS ratings were also significantly correlated with both VHI and the GFI scales. R values were higher for the VHI, but remained largely in low range for both scales. Conclusions Although GRBAS ratings were significantly correlated with multiple objective voice and patient related quality of life ratings, r values were low. These findings support the need for multiple voice measures when performing voice evaluations as no single voice measure was highly correlated with voice quality as measured by the GRBAS scale.

Summary Objectives/Hypothesis The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships among cognitive loading, autonomic arousal, and acoustic measures of voice in healthy older adults. Study Design Prospective and observational. Methods Twelve healthy older adults (six females) produced a sentence containing an embedded Stroop task in each of two cognitive load conditions: congruent and incongruent. Three physiologic measures of autonomic arousal (pulse volume amplitude, pulse period, and skin conductance response amplitude) and four acoustic measures of voice (cepstral peak prominence, low-to-high spectral energy ratio, fundamental frequency, and sound pressure level) were analyzed in each cognitive load condition. Results A logistic regression model was used to predict the cognitive load condition using participant as a categorical predictor and the four acoustic measures and three autonomic measures as continuous predictors. Skin conductance response amplitude and pulse volume amplitude were both predictive of cognitive load; however, no acoustic measures of voice were statistically significant predictors of cognitive load for older adults. Conclusions These findings support the idea that increased cognitive load is associated with increased autonomic nervous system activity in older adults. The lack of changes in acoustic measures of voice with increased cognitive load may result from age-related changes in vocal quality and speech subsystems.

Summary Objective The current paper examined the impact of dysphonia on the bandwidth of the first two formants of vowels, and the relationship between the formant bandwidth and vowel intelligibility. Methods Speaker participants of the study were 10 adult females with healthy voice and 10 adult females with dysphonic voice. Eleven vowels in American English were recorded in /h/-vowel-/d/ format. The vowels were presented to 10 native speakers of American English with normal hearing, who were asked to select a vowel they heard from a list of /h/-vowel-/d/ words. The vowels were acoustically analyzed to measure the bandwidth of the first and second formants (B1 and B2). Separate Wilcoxon rank sum tests were conducted for each vowel for normal and dysphonic speech because the differences in B1 and B2 were found to not be normally distributed. Spearman correlation tests were conducted to evaluate the association between the difference in formant bandwidths and vowel intelligibility between the healthy and dysphonic speakers. Results B1 was significantly greater in dysphonic vowels for seven of the eleven vowels, and lesser for only one of the vowels. There was no statistically significant difference in B2 between the normal and dysphonic vowels, except for the vowel /i/. The difference in B1 between normal and dysphonic vowels strongly predicted the intelligibility difference. Conclusion Dysphonia significantly affects B1, and the difference in B1 may serve as an acoustic marker for the intelligibility reduction in dysphonic vowels. This acoustic-perceptual relationship should be confirmed by a larger-scale study in the future.

Objective: Essential tremor (ET) is a common neurological disorder that has been associated with 60% increased risk of developing dementia. The goals of the present study were to: (a) learn whether individuals with advanced ET symptoms seeking deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery would fall into distinct cognitive subgroups, and (b) learn how empirically derived subgroups map onto criteria for mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Method: Patients with ET (N = 201; mean age = 68.9 ± 8.9 years) undergoing pre-surgical evaluation for DBS completed a multi-domain neurocognitive assessment consisting of memory, executive function, visuospatial skill, language, and processing speed. Two cluster analytic approaches (K-means, hierarchical) were independently conducted to classify cognitive patterns using domain composites. Demographics, clinical characteristics, and proportion of cases meeting neuropsychologically defined criteria for MCI were examined among clusters. Results: A three-cluster solution reflected a Low Executive group (N = 64), Low Memory Multi-Domain group (N = 41), and Cognitively Normal group (N = 96). The Cognitively Normal group was older and more educated, with a higher Dementia Rating Scale-2 score. In total, 27.4% of participants met criteria for MCI. Of the MCI cases, most were in the Low Executive (41.8%) or Low Memory Multi-Domain groups (49.1%). In the latter, 65.9% of its members were classified as MCI versus 35.9% in the Low Executive group. Conclusions: Our study identified three cognitive subtypes of ET patients presenting for DBS. Future work should examine the subgroups for progression to dementia, particularly the Low Memory Multi-Domain subgroup which may be at highest risk.

Smokers with stronger neuroaffective responses to drug-related cues compared to nondrug-related pleasant images (C > P) are more vulnerable to compulsive smoking than individuals with the opposite brain reactivity profile (P > C). However, it is unknown if these neurobehavioral profiles exist in individuals abusing other drugs. We tested whether individuals with cocaine use disorder (CUD) show similar neuroaffective profiles to smokers. We also monitored eye movements to assess attentional bias toward cues and we further performed exploratory analyses on demographics, personality, and drug use between profiles. Participants with CUD (n = 43) viewed pleasant, unpleasant, cocaine, and neutral images while we recorded electroencephalogram. For each picture category, we computed the amplitude of the late positive potential (LPP), an event-related potential component that reflects motivational relevance. k-means clustering classified participants based on their LPP responses. In line with what has been observed in smokers, clustering participants using LPP responses revealed the presence of two groups: one with larger LPPs to pleasant images compared to cocaine images (P > C) and one group with larger LPPs to cocaine images compared to pleasant images (C > P). Individuals with the C > P reactivity profile also had higher attentional bias toward drug cues. The two groups did not differ on demographic and drug use characteristics, however individuals with the C > P profile reported lower distress tolerance, higher anhedonia, and higher posttraumatic stress symptoms compared to the P > C group. This is the first study to report the presence of these neuroaffective profiles in individuals with CUD, indicating that this pattern may cut across addiction populations. Summary Objective Dysphonia is a reduction in vocal quality that impacts communication and is often an early sign of a voice disorder. There is little information regarding the effects of auditory feedback control of loudness and pitch on voice quality. In this study, we used both loudness-shift and pitch-shift paradigms to study the relationship between auditory feedback control and vocal quality as measured by smoothed cepstral peak prominence (CPPS), which reflects the harmonicity of the voice signal. Study Design Experimental, mixed design. Methods We applied 200 ms loudness-shifts (± 0, 3, or 6 dB) and pitch-shifts (± 0, 50, and 100 cents) to auditory feedback during sustained vowel production in 25 healthy adults. We then measured CPPS before and after the loudness-shift or pitch-shift to investigate the effect of changes in auditory feedback on vocal harmonicity. Results & Conclusions Results showed that, on average, CPPS significantly decreased between the first half of the measured segment and the last half of the segment in the absence of auditory feedback shifts, suggesting that voice quality may be reduced across longer vowels over time. Upward and downward shifts in loudness auditory feedback caused a relative increase in CPPS, indicating an improvement in vocal harmonicity, even in cases when vocal intensity was reduced. Pitch alterations had inconsistent and minimal effects. We propose that there may be a control mechanism for voice quality that increases harmonicity of the voice signal to improve voice audibility (ie, ability to be heard) in the presence of unpredictable variability in voice intensity.

The Onset fluency disorder is termed as stuttering or stammering, which is one of the most addressed disorder. There are numerous cause and stages of the stuttering, most of adolescent who run into this disorder will possesses either PWS or Dysfluency. These neuro cognitive disorders includes brain stimulation supported with significant research on brain and cognitive augmentation recommended and prescribed for the healthy adults and for the patients who suffered from neurological or psychiatric diseases. Number of sensing systems, for an instance functional near infrared spectroscopy (FNIRS) has been utilized in a significant manner to ascertain speech fluency and other related motor disabilities. In principle, FNIRS operated by quantifying hemoglobin-concentration changes in the brain based on optical intensity measurements, measuring the same hemodynamic changes. The said FNIRS provisioned to deliver as a neuro-imaging brain image interface (BCI) functioned to measure neuronal activities, significantly brain cortex considering neuro-vascular coupling through uniformly distributed opto-electronic devices. The dataset generated by the FNIRS confirmed the mapped reflection of the behavior of the brain depending upon the actions performed by the participants. Depending upon the disorder and severity, the placement of the optodes and sensitivity of the treatment or the module will vary. To boost it up a little bit, the simulation sessions will be conducted in a regular interval and the data which is being processed or collected through each sessions will be imparted onto the compute module as a prepossessed data to increase the scalability and reliability of the module.

Emotional conflict control is impaired in major depression disorders (MDDs) and affects decision-making with further consequent social interactions dysfunction. However, neural correlates of conflict monitoring processes being modulated by different affective distractor stimuli are not clear in MDDs. In this paper, we investigated abnormal neural basis of conflict monitoring processes in MDD patients by applying dynamic causal modeling (DCM) technique on electroencephalography (EEG). The results indicated that MDD patients showed lower N2 amplitudes regardless of stimulus conditions, and reduced activation within ACC region for incongruent stimuli, relative to healthy controls. Especially, MDDs had more negative N2 amplitudes to happy incongruent trials than happy congruent trials. Source localization analyses revealed that MDD patients had significantly enhanced left inferior temporal gyrus (ITG) activation, which is involved in written words processing. Further DCM analysis provided abnormal neural correlates through greater backward connections (fusiform→ITG, amygdala→ITG) on happy incongruent trials than happy congruent trials in MDD group. These findings indicate that only sad words induce significantly greater interference effects to positive target faces in MDD patients, which may be associated with ITG activity dysfunction. The findings may share new insights into the neural mechanisms of emotional conflict processing in MDDs.

Cepstral measures are sensitive to gender, age and phonatory tasks. With a cepstral measure designated as the CPP, it was possible to confirm the vulnerability of the Fado singers' voice. These were established at the vocal pathological threshold, which suggests a need for a direct clinical approach for these voice users.This study aimed to characterize cepstral peak prominence (CPP) and cepstral peak prominence smoothed (CPPS) in the Fado singing voice and to determine if there were significant differences in CPP and CPPS measures between spoken and sung tasks, as well as due to singers' gender and age.Forty seven males and 57 females Fado singers, ranging from 18 to 70 years participated in this study. Spoken voice tasks were sustained [a] and reading aloud the phonetically balanced text "O Sol". Sung tasks were sustained [a] of the word [ɐfinaɫ] and the Fado chorus song "Nem às paredes confesso". Acoustic measures included CPP and CPPS. CPP was measured using Analyses of Dysphonia in Speech and Voice software, of Multi-Speech program, Model 3700, by KayPENTAX. CPPS was measured using Praat software (4.2.1/2003). Statistical analysis was performed with an IBM SPSS Statistics version 22 program. CPP and CPPS mean differences of spoken and sung tasks were analyzed using paired samples t-test, with α at .05.CPP and CPPS values of singers' voice changed according to the gender, age and phonatory tasks. There were significant differences between CPP and CPPS measures (P0.05). Generally, young male singers, in their sung task, presented the highest CPP and CPPS values. The highest CPP mean was obtained by older males in sustained spoken [a] and the lowest was obtained by younger males in their reading aloud task. For CPPS, the highest mean value was obtained by younger males during sung [a] and the lowest was by younger males in the reading aloud task.Males presented higher cepstral measures than females. Young singers presented higher cepstral measures than older. Sung tasks had higher cepstral measures than spoken tasks. CPPS means are overall higher than CPP means. This study reinforces the need for a clinical prevention approach directed at potential vocal disorders in Fado singers.

Open-system electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) permit modifications to device characteristics such as power, potentially increasing nicotine and toxicant delivery. Limiting liquid nicotine concentration may carry unintended consequences by prompting users to increase device power to increase nicotine delivery. This study examined the abuse liability of ENDS across nicotine concentration and power settings. In a clinical laboratory study, n = 19 exclusive ENDS users and n = 13 dual ENDS/cigarette users, aged 21-55 completed four Latin-square ordered conditions that varied by liquid nicotine concentration (10 mg/ml [low], 30 mg/ml [high]) and device power (15 watts [low], 30 watts [high]), that were followed by a fifth own brand (OB) condition. A progressive ratio task (PRT) using bar presses to earn ENDS puffs was used to assess abuse liability and compare between conditions using mixed effects linear regressions. The low nicotine/high watt condition was associated with a significantly higher number of bar presses and puffs earned relative to the OB ENDS, high nicotine/high watt, and high nicotine/low watt conditions (p < .05). Findings appeared to be driven largely by exclusive ENDS users; most comparisons were not significant among dual users. Participants worked significantly harder for puffs of low nicotine/high watt ENDS, highlighting previous findings that suggest limiting liquid nicotine concentration without addressing power settings may be insufficient to reduce the abuse liability of ENDS. BACKGROUND: Williams syndrome (WS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by hypersociability, heightened auditory sensitivities, attention deficits, and strong musical interests despite differences in musical skills. Behavioral studies report individuals with WS exhibit variable beat and rhythm perception skills. METHODS: We sought to investigate the neural basis of beat tracking in individuals with WS using electroencephalography (EEG). Twenty-seven adults with WS and sixteen age-matched typically developing control subjects passively listened to musical rhythms with accents on either the first or second tone of the repeating pattern, leading to distinct beat percepts. RESULTS: Consistent with the role of beta and gamma oscillations in rhythm processing, individuals with WS and typically developing control subjects showed strong evoked neural activity in both beta (13-30 Hz) and gamma (31-55 Hz) frequency bands in response to beat onsets. This neural response was somewhat more distributed across the scalp for individuals with WS. Compared with typically developing control subjects, individuals with WS exhibited significantly greater amplitude of auditory evoked potentials (P1-N1-P2 complex) and modulations in evoked alpha (8-12 Hz) activity, reflective of sensory and attentional processes, compared to typically developing control subjects. Individuals with WS also exhibited markedly stable neural responses over the course of the experiment, and these were significantly more stable than those of controls. CONCLUSIONS: These results provide neurophysiological evidence for dynamic beat tracking in WS and coincide with the atypical auditory phenotype and attentional difficulties seen in this population.

Most older adults experience age-related changes to their hearing, either in the form of hearing loss, or in a more subtle form of hearing impairment, causing difficulties understanding speech in acoustically challenging environments. As the population grows older, better solutions will be needed to alleviate age-related hearing deficits. To test new potential therapies for age-related changes to hearing, preclinical models must be identified and characterized. The studies included in this dissertation measure translationally relevant electrophysiological signals from mice at multiple ages, with and without severe hearing loss, to identify age-related changes to cortical activity, both at baseline and in response to acoustic stimuli. Acoustic stimuli were used to test various aspects of auditory processing, including amplitude modulated signal processing, which supports speech comprehension. We found that age-related changes in the responses to the acoustic stimuli selected for this study mirror many of the changes observed in older humans. We observed age-related deficits in responses to more challenging amplitude modulated signals, even in the absence of hearing loss. In mice with hearing loss, we observed evidence of central gain and disrupted temporal processing. Both results, which mirror age-related changes to human hearing, suggest that aging mice are a useful model for auditory processing in older humans. We then evaluated the therapeutic potential of nicotine for treating age-related changes to auditory temporal processing, with promising results. Nicotine appeared to improve temporal processing in old mice, partially reversing age-related, frequency-specific changes in event-related spectral perturbations and amplitude modulation following responses. This dissertation characterizes translationally relevant preclinical measures of age-related changes to auditory processing, with the aim of testing interventions and therapeutics, such as nicotine, for the treatment of age-related auditory temporal processing deficits.

Background Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that is characterized by various social impairments. Children with ASD have major difficulties in expressing themselves, resulting in stress and meltdowns. Understanding their hidden feelings and needs may help in tackling and avoiding such strenuous behaviors. Objective This research aims to aid the parents and caretakers of children with ASD to understand the hidden and unexpressed emotional state by using physiological signals obtained from wearable devices. Methods Here, electrocardiogram (ECG) signals pertaining to two valence states (‘like’ and ‘dislike’) were recorded from twenty children (10 Control and 10 children with ASD). The heart rate variability (HRV) signals were then obtained from the ECG signals using the Pan-Tompkins's algorithm. The statistical, higher order statistics (HOS) and geometrical features which were statistically significant were trained using the K Nearest Neighbor (KNN) and Ensemble Classifier algorithms. Results The findings of our analysis indicate that the integration of major statistical features resulted in an overall average accuracy of 84.8% and 75.3% using HRV data for the control and test population, respectively. Similarly, geometrical features resulted in a maximum average accuracy of 84.8% and 74.2% for control and test population respectively. The decreased HRV in the test population indicates the presence of autonomic dysregulation in children with ASD when compared to their control peers.

Summary Introduction College students use their voices at excessively loud intensities and long durations during college fests. The accumulative effect of vocally abusive behaviors in the presence of high ambient noise, poor vocal hygiene, and other environmental factors contribute significantly towards reducing vocal effectiveness in college students. Objective The present study aimed to study the effect of a vocally demanding situation (college Fest) on perceptual and objective voice features of college students. Methodology In this study, a total number of 27 undergraduate female students participated in the age range of 18–27 years. Pre-test—post-test research design was applied. Data analysis consisted of video stroboscopic examination, acoustic analysis using the Multi-dimensional voice program (MDVP), and perceptual evaluation with the GRBAS scale. The data obtained were processed using descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests to determine the difference in each measured parameter pre- and postfest. Results and Discussion Incomplete glottis closure, asymmetric vibration of vocal folds, and aperiodicity of vocal folds increased significantly postcollege Fest. GRBAS parameters also showed a change from pre Fest scores on grade (hoarseness) increased by 38%, breathiness in 34%, roughness in 26%, Asthenia in 15%, and strain increased in 38% participants. A P-value estimation revealed significantly higher scores in Jitter percent, Shimmer percent, and relative average perturbation than pre-fest scores. Conclusion The results of the present study indicate a high risk of vocal disorders among college students post Fest. This study suggests a potential unmet need for college students to receive education before cultural events on optimal vocal usage, vocal hygiene, and an appropriate period of vocal rest.

The ability to understand speech in complex environments depends on the brain's ability to preserve the precise timing characteristics of the speech signal. Age-related declines in temporal processing may contribute to the older adult's experience of communication difficulty in challenging listening conditions. This study's purpose was to evaluate the effects of rate discrimination training on auditory temporal processing. A double-blind, randomized control design assigned 77 young normal-hearing, older normal-hearing, and older hearing-impaired listeners to one of two treatment groups: experimental (rate discrimination for 100- and 300-Hz pulse trains) and active control (tone detection in noise). All listeners were evaluated during pre- and post-training sessions using perceptual rate discrimination of 100-, 200-, 300-, and 400-Hz band-limited pulse trains and auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs) to the same stimuli. Training generalization was evaluated using several temporal processing measures and sentence recognition tests that included time-compressed and reverberant speech stimuli. Results demonstrated a session × training group interaction for perceptual and ASSR testing to the trained frequencies (100 and 300 Hz), driven by greater improvements in the training group than in the active control group. Further, post-test rate discrimination of the older listeners reached levels that were equivalent to those of the younger listeners at pre-test. Generalization was observed in significant improvement in rate discrimination of untrained frequencies (200 and 400 Hz) and in correlations between performance changes in rate discrimination and sentence recognition of reverberant speech. Further, non-auditory inhibition/attention performance predicted training-related improvement in rate discrimination. Overall, the results demonstrate the potential for auditory training to partially restore temporal processing in older listeners and highlight the role of cognitive function in these gains.

The emotional attentional blink (EAB), also referred to as emotion-induced blindness, refers to a transient impairment in the ability to discriminate a single target when it is presented closely in time to an emotional distractor. Although the EAB has typically been characterized as representing a complete loss of target information due to attentional capture by the emotional distractors, it is unclear whether the impact of the emotional distractor is in fact discrete or graded. Here, we tested whether the emotional distractor of the EAB interfered with target processing in a continuous or all-or-none manner by measuring changes in both reaction time (RT) and target-vividness ratings in addition to target-discrimination accuracy. Rapid sequences of landscape images were presented centrally, and participants reported the orientation of a ± 90° rotated target as quickly and accurately as possible. Replicating the classic EAB phenomenon, we found a strong impairment in target discrimination when an emotional distractor shortly preceded the target, and we also found a moderate impairment when the target preceded an emotional distractor. This decrement in accuracy at short lags was accompanied by increases in RT to the target as well as lower ratings of subjective target vividness even when the target was detected, indicating that emotional distractors impacted target processing in a lag-dependent, graded manner. We argue that these results are consistent with an interactive race model of the competition between stimulus representations in the conflict between top-down and bottom-up attentional mechanisms. Research on the electroencephalographic (EEG) signatures of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has historically concentrated on its frequency spectrum or event-related evoked potentials. In this work, we investigate EEG microstates (MSs), an alternative framework defined by the clustering of recurring topographical patterns, as a novel approach for examining large-scale cortical dynamics in ADHD.Using k-means clustering, we studied the spatiotemporal dynamics of ADHD during the rest condition by comparing the MS segmentations between adult patients with ADHD and neurotypical control subjects across two independent datasets: the first dataset consisted of 66 patients with ADHD and 66 control subjects, and the second dataset comprised 22 patients with ADHD and 22 control subjects and was used for out-of-sample validation.Spatially, patients with ADHD and control subjects displayed equivalent MS topographies (canonical maps), indicating the preservation of prototypical EEG generators in patients with ADHD. However, this concordance was accompanied by significant differences in temporal dynamics. At the group level, and across both datasets, ADHD diagnosis was associated with longer mean durations of a frontocentral topography (MS D), indicating that its electrocortical generator(s) could be acting as pronounced attractors of global cortical dynamics. In addition, its spatiotemporal metrics were correlated with sleep disturbance, the latter being known to have a strong relationship with ADHD. Finally, in the first (larger) dataset, we also found evidence of decreased time coverage and mean duration of a left-right diagonal topography (MS A), which inversely correlated with ADHD scores.Overall, our study underlines the value of EEG MSs as promising functional biomarkers for ADHD, offering an additional lens through which to examine its neurophysiological mechanisms.

Surprised facial expressions, which are ambiguous in valence, are interpreted more positively by older adults than by younger adults. To evaluate the processes that contribute to this age difference, we varied the spatial frequency of the surprised-face stimuli. Replicating prior results, we found that older adults rated the unfiltered surprised faces more positively than did younger adults. However, valence ratings were affected by spatial frequency. When the surprised faces were presented in a low-spatial-frequency band, it biased the participants to rate them negatively. Even though this occurred for both the younger and older adults, the older adults’ ratings of the low-spatial-frequency faces were still more positive than that of the younger adults. This suggests that there is an age-related reduction in the default negativity of interpretations. Evidence for additional processes comes from analyses of the high-spatial-frequency faces. Although older adults, as a whole, rated the high-spatial frequency faces to be more positive than the younger adults, this effect was eliminated for the subset of older adults with poor high-spatial-frequency perception abilities. We suggest that this is because these older adults needed to use top-down cognitive resources to compensate for the decrease in bottom-up input, and this cognitive load interfered with their ability to increase the positivity of their ratings for the difficult-to-perceive faces. Thus, older adults’ more positive interpretations of surprised faces can be attributed to age-related reduction in default negativity and also to older adults’ use of cognitively-effortful top-down regulatory processes that serve to increase positivity.

Background: Eyeblink conditioning is used in many different species to study motor learning and make inferences about cerebellar function. However, considerable discrepancies in performance between different species combined with evidence that awareness of stimulus contingencies affects performance indicates that eyeblink conditioning in part reflects activity in non-cerebellar regions. This questions whether eyeblink conditioning can be used as a pure measure of cerebellar function in humans. Methods: Here we explored two ways to reduce non-cerebellar influences on performance in eyeblink conditioning: (1) using a short interstimulus interval, and (2) having participants do working memory tasks during the conditioning. Data were analyzed, and the influence of the interstimulus interval and working memory tasks was assessed using a linear mixed effects model. Results: Our results show that subjects trained with a short interstimulus interval (150ms and 250ms) produce few conditioned responses after 100 trials. For subjects trained with a longer interstimulus interval (500ms), those who did working memory tasks produced fewer conditioned responses and had a more gradual learning curve, more akin to those reported in the animal literature. Conclusions: Our results suggest that having subjects perform working memory tasks during eyeblink conditioning can be a viable strategy to reduce non-cerebellar interference in the learning.

This paper examines the nature of categorical perception (CP) effects in Mandarin and Dutch adult listeners through identification and discrimination tasks using lexical tonal contrasts and through the CP index analysis. In identification tasks, Mandarin listeners identify tones in accordance with their native tonal categories whereas Dutch listeners do so based on acoustic properties. In discrimination tasks, Dutch listeners outperform Mandarin listeners especially in tonal steps on the continuum falling within the Mandarin tonal category boundary, whereas Mandarin listeners display high sensitivity in discrimination of stimuli falling across the native boundary. The CP index analysis shows a higher degree of CP in Mandarin (categorical perception) than in Dutch (psycho-acoustic perception) listeners.

The phenomenon of prodrop has attracted much attention in recent years both in the field of syntactic theory and in pragmatics (Chomsky, 1981, 1982; Rizzi, 1982; Gundel, 1980; Givon, 1976). Persian is among the many languages which exhibit this phenomenon. The central aim of this paper is to discover the pragmatic contraints governing the distribution of overt and non-overt subjects. Persian is a SOV language. Verbs carry the person and number information in the form of suffixes. These agreement markers are unique for each person. Non-overt (zero) subjects are allowed and occur very frequently in speech. Looking at natural data, we see that overt subjects appear even when their referents are in focus. Finding the contraints governing the distribution of these overt subjects is the primary question addressed in this paper. For the purposes of this study, we are classifying full noun phrases and pronouns together as overt subjects although pronominalization has its own separate pragmatic functions. Here we are focussing on zero subjects and overt subjects. Our data base consists of six children and four adult narratives. The unity of the narrative as a genre with its usual focus on one main actor make it possible to track the same noun phrase throughout the story in a variety of syntactic and pragmatic environments. This makes the narrative genre ideal for contrasting overt and non-overt subjects.

Abstract. Automatic deviance detection has been widely explored in terms of mismatch responses (mismatch negativity or mismatch response) and P3a components of event-related potentials (ERPs) under a predictive coding framework; however, the somatosensory mismatch response has been investigated less often regarding the different types of changes than its auditory counterpart. It is not known whether the deviance detection responses from different modalities correlate, reflecting a general prediction error mechanism of the central nervous system. Furthermore, interoceptive functions have been associated with predictive coding theory, but whether interoceptive accuracy correlates with deviance detection brain responses has rarely been investigated. Here, we measured ERPs to changes in somatosensory stimuli’s location and intensity and in sound intensity in healthy adults ( n = 34). Interoceptive accuracy was measured with a heartbeat discrimination task, where participants indicated whether their heartbeats were simultaneous or non-simultaneous with sound stimuli. We found a mismatch response and a P3a response to somatosensory location and auditory intensity changes, but for somatosensory intensity changes, only a P3a response was found. Unexpectedly, there were neither correlations between the somatosensory location deviance and intensity deviance brain responses nor between auditory and somatosensory brain responses. In addition, the brain responses did not correlate with interoceptive accuracy. The results suggest that although deviance detection in the auditory and somatosensory modalities are likely based on similar neural mechanisms at a cellular level, their ERP indexes do not indicate a linear association in sensitivity for deviance detection between the modalities. Furthermore, although sensory deviance detection and interoceptive detection are both associated with predictive coding functions, under these experimental settings, functional relationships were not observed. These results should be taken into account in the future development of theories related to human sensory functions and in extensions of the predictive coding theory in particular.

Introduction: In this study the objective was to determine the effects of the complex exercises in hemsball on the attention and coordinative skills among adolescents with hearing loss.Method: 20 hearing-impaired students were divided into two groups as experimental and control. A training program consisting of the complex exercises in hemsball was applied to adolescents with hearing loss for one hour, three days per week, for a period of 10 weeks. Bourdon Attention Test, Simple Reaction Time Test and balance test of Bruininks-Oseretsky Motor Profiency (BOT-2) motor competence sub-items and Alternate Hand Wall Toss Test for hand-eye coordination measurements were utilized for data collection. In the analysis of the data, descriptive statistics and two factor analysis of variance for repeated measures were used for the difference between pre-test and post-test average values for each group.Findings: While significant effect of complex exercises in hemsball on attention, hand-eye coordination, balance and reaction test (dominant hand) was observed in the experimental group, no significant difference was noted in the mean values of the reaction test (non-dominant hand).Discussion: It is especially important to develop and promote exercise programs tailored to the needs of adolescents with hearing loss with attention and coordination issues.Conclusion: The complex hemsball exercises indicated in this study should be considered as an alternative game for adolescent with hearing loss in terms of attention, focus and concentration, hand-eye-foot coordination, balance and reaction time., Giriş: Bu araştırmada, hemsballda komplike egzersizlerin işitme engellilerin dikkat ve koordinatif yetilerine etkisinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır.Yöntem: Çalışmaya, 10 deney grubu, 10 kontrol grubu olmak üzere toplam 20 işitme engelli çocuk katılmıştır. Çalışmalara katılan işitme engelli çocuklara haftada 3 gün birer saat olmak üzere 10 hafta süreyle hemsballda komplike alıştırmalardan oluşan bir egzersiz programı uygulanmıştır. Veri toplama tekniği olarak bourdon dikkat testi, basit reaksiyon zamanı testi, BOT-2 motor yeterlik alt maddelerinden denge testi ve el-göz koordinasyon ölçümleri için alternatif el duvar fırlatma testi kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen verilerin analizinde betimsel istatistiklerin yanı sıra her bir gruba ilişkin öntest ve sontest ortalamaları arasındaki farklılık için tekrarlı ölçümler için iki faktörlü varyans analizi kullanılmıştır.Bulgular: Araştırma sonucunda, deney grubunda hemsballda komplike egzersiz programının dikkat, el-göz koordinasyonu, denge ve reaksiyon testi (baskın el) üzerinde anlamlı bir etkisi olduğu görülürken, reaksiyon test (baskın olmayan el) ortalamaları arasında anlamlı bir farklılık görülmemiştir.Tartışma: Yapılan araştırmalarda, dikkat ve koordinasyon bozukluğu olan işitme engelli çocuklarda ihtiyaçlara göre uyarlanmış egzersiz programlarını geliştirmek ve teşvik etmek özellikle önemli görülmektedir.Sonuç: Bu çalışmada belirtilen komplike hemsball egzersizleri, dikkat, odaklanma ve konsantrasyon, el-göz-ayak koordinasyonu, denge ve reaksiyon hızı açısından işitme kaybı olan çocuklar için alternatif bir aktivite olarak düşünülmelidir.

Perceptual decisions depend both on the features of the incoming stimulus and on the ongoing brain activity at the moment the stimulus is received. Specifically, trial-to-trial fluctuations in cortical excitability have been linked to fluctuations in the amplitude of pre-stimulus alpha oscillations (≈8-13 Hz), which are in turn are associated with fluctuations in subjects’ tendency to report the detection of a stimulus. It is currently unknown whether alpha oscillations bias post-perceptual decision making, or even bias subjective perception itself. To answer this question, we used a contrast discrimination task in which subjects reported which of two gratings – one in each hemifield – was perceived as having a stronger contrast. Our EEG analysis showed that subjective contrast was reduced for the stimulus in the hemifield represented in the hemisphere with relatively stronger pre-stimulus alpha amplitude, reflecting reduced cortical excitability. Furthermore, the strength of this spontaneous hemispheric lateralization was strongly correlated with the magnitude of individual subjects’ biases, suggesting that the spontaneous patterns of alpha lateralization play a role in explaining the intersubject variability in contrast perception. These results indicate that spontaneous fluctuations in cortical excitability, indicted by patterns of pre-stimulus alpha amplitude, affect perceptual decisions by altering the phenomenological perception of the visual world.Significance StatementOur moment to moment perception of the world is shaped by the features of the environment surrounding us, as much as by the constantly evolving states that characterize our brain activity. Previous research showed how the ongoing electrical activity of the brain can influence whether a stimulus has accessed conscious perception. However, evidence is currently missing on whether these electrical brain states can be associated to the subjective experience of a sensory input. Here we show that local changes in patterns of electrical brain activity preceding visual stimulation can bias our phenomenological perception. Importantly, we show that the strength of these variations can help explaining the great inter-individual variability in how we perceive the visual environment surrounding us.

BACKGROUND: The analysis of brain activity in different conditions is an important research area in neuroscience. OBJECTIVE: This paper analyzed the correlation between the brain and skin activities in rest and stimulations by information-based analysis of electroencephalogram (EEG) and galvanic skin resistance (GSR) signals. METHODS: We recorded EEG and GSR signals of eleven subjects during rest and auditory stimulations using three pieces of music that were differentiated based on their complexity. Then, we calculated the Shannon entropy of these signals to quantify their information contents. RESULTS: The results showed that music with greater complexity has a more significant effect on altering the information contents of EEG and GSR signals. We also found a strong correlation (r= 0.9682) among the variations of the information contents of EEG and GSR signals. Therefore, the activities of the skin and brain are correlated in different conditions. CONCLUSION: This analysis technique can be utilized to evaluate the correlation among the activities of various organs versus brain activity in different conditions.

Typical aging is associated with increases in false memory rates among older adults. Such errors are frequently associated with differential neural activity during encoding and retrieval in older compared to younger adults within visual cortices, hippocampus, and front-parietal regions. It remains unknown how pattern similarity reductions relate to false memories in healthy aging. Using encoding-retrieval similarity (ERS) analyses in a sample of younger and older adults, we examined how the similarity of neural patterns between memory phases associated with target and lure objects was impacted by age and contributed to false memory rates. Single-item ERS for targets and lures was reduced by age throughout much of the ventral visual stream and the posterior hippocampus. Furthermore, ERS associated with perceptual lures within the visual stream maintained differential relationships with false memory. Finally, a global ERS metric accounted for age deficits in single-item ERS, but did not contribute to false memory rates. These findings highlight the contribution of age-related reductions in ERS across multiple representational levels to false memories in healthy aging.

It is as yet unresolved to what extent the pre-attentive detection of auditory deviance is modulated by emotion. The current event-related potential study was designed to investigate simultaneously the auditory and the visual mismatch negativity (MMN), as well as the impact of emotion on the auditory MMN. Thirty healthy participants saw sequences of neutral and fearful face stimuli and were instructed to identify easily detectable target faces by button press, whereas simultaneously presented auditory stimuli did not require any behavioral response. Increased N170 and N250 amplitudes to fearful faces indicated a differential processing of the fearful and neutral faces as standards. A visual MMN was clearly elicited by fearful face deviants, but hardly by neutral face deviants. Neither the auditory MMN nor the processing of visual targets was modulated by the facial emotion. However, the N250 modulation by emotion was surprisingly larger in target than in non-target trials. Findings suggest that the pre-attentive detection of auditory deviance as reflected in the auditory MMN is not substantially modulated by emotion induced by visual stimulation. The wide lack of a significant visual MMN to neutral deviants indicates that this deviance detection is not driven by physical stimulus properties (because otherwise the visual MMN to fearful and neutral deviants should have the same magnitude) but strongly by the emotional significance. The behavioral significance of targets apparently led to an enhanced processing of emotional features even though these features were irrelevant for target detection task.

Objective Children who are hard of hearing (CHH) experience delays in spoken language and executive function, but the mechanisms for these deficits remain unresolved. Differences in auditory experience and language skills have been examined as contributing factors to deficits in executive function, primarily with children who are deaf and children with cochlear implants. The theoretical model of cumulative auditory experience quantifies auditory dosage as how much speech is audible and how often children wear their hearing aids. CHH with higher auditory dosage have better language outcomes than peers with less auditory dosage. However, the effects of auditory experience on executive function have not been studied in CHH. The goal of this study was to examine the influences of auditory experience and language skills on the development of executive function in CHH. Design We collected measures of aided speech audibility, hearing aid use, executive function, and receptive vocabulary in 177 CHH and 86 children with typical hearing who were 5- to 10 years old and matched for socioeconomic status and nonverbal intelligence. Auditory dosage was calculated by combining each child's average hours of hearing aid use with their audibility for speech to create a variable that quantifies individual differences in auditory access. Results CHH had lower receptive vocabulary and deficits in executive function related to working memory and selective attention compared to peers with typical hearing. CHH with greater auditory dosage had higher receptive vocabulary than CHH with lower auditory dosage. Better receptive vocabulary was associated with better scores on executive function measures related to working memory and attention. Auditory dosage was also directly associated with measures of verbal working memory. Conclusions CHH have deficits in language and some, but not all, areas of executive function related to working memory and attention. Auditory dosage was associated with language abilities and verbal working memory. Language was associated with individual differences in executive function skills related to attention and working memory. These results provide support for systems theories regarding the development of executive function in CHH. Interventions that improve auditory access and language may be effective for improving executive function related to working memory and attention in CHH.
