School attendance problems are a serious issue for educators, psychologists and physicians. Nonattendance is a key risk factor for academic failure, violence, psychiatric disorders or economic deprivation. This study aimed to identify different school refusal behavior profiles and to determine whether these profiles differ from each other based on several psychopathological symptoms (somatization, obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, phobic anxiety, paranoid ideation and psychoticism). The participants were 1894 Spanish adolescents (53% boys) aged 15–18 years (M = 16.84, SD = 1.03). The School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised (SRAS-R) and the Symptom Assessment-45 Questionnaire (SA-45) were administered. Latent class analysis revealed four school refusal behavior profiles: Non-School Refusal Behavior, High School Refusal Behavior, Moderately Low School Refusal Behavior and Moderately High School Refusal Behavior. The results indicated that the High School Refusal Behavior and Moderately High School Refusal Behavior groups were the most maladaptive profiles and revealed the highest mean scores on the psychopathological symptoms. These findings highlight the importance of promoting good mental health to prevent school refusal behaviors. Una de las características de los seres humanos es desarrollarse hasta alcanzar metas y objetivos personales. Sin embargo, los logros alcanzados en muchos de los casos son evaluados y asociados como triunfos personales, pero existe un grupo de individuos que sus autoevaluaciones son demasiadas rígidas, y piensan que no lo hicieron lo suficientemente bien, ocasionándoles insatisfacciones personales; son aquellos que se denominan perfeccionistas. A su vez, existe un colectivo de población infanto-juvenil que rechaza ir a la escuela debido a esas dificultades ante situaciones de evaluación y de exponer en público. Es decir, por la aversión social o situaciones de evaluación académica. Por ello, el presente trabajo tuvo como objetivo estudiar las diferencias estadísticamente significativas de perfeccionismo en estudiantes ecuatorianos en función de las altas y bajas puntuaciones en el escape de la aversión social o situaciones de evaluación, cuyo factor corresponde a la II dimensión de la School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised for Children (SRAS-R-C). La muestra total alcanzó un total de 1920 estudiantes de 1º, 2º y 3º de Bachillerato matriculados en institutos públicos de Ecuador. Los hallazgos observados arrojan diferencias estadísticamente significativas en ambos grupos para variables como Perfeccionismo Auto Orientado Esfuerzos (PAO-E) y Perfeccionismo Auto Orientado Crítica (PAO-C), siendo los adolescentes con alto rechazo escolar los que obtuvieron más altas puntuaciones en PAO-C (d = .18) y PAO-E (d = .27). En conclusión, los hallazgos encontrados suponen un avance científico en el ámbito educativo, teniendo en cuenta la importancia de no abandonar la vida académica para el futuro laboral, económico y social del país de Ecuador. One of the characteristics of human beings is to develop to achieve personal goals and objectives. However, the achievements made in many cases are evaluated and associated as personal triumphs, but there is a group of individuals whose self-assessments are too rigid, and think they did not do well enough, causing them personal dissatisfaction. They are those that are called perfectionists. In turn, there is a group of children and young people who refuse to go to school due to these difficulties in situations of evaluation and public presentation. That is, by escape from aversive social and/or evaluative situations. Therefore, the present work aimed to study the statistically significant differences of perfectionism in Ecuadorian students based on high and low scores in the escape from aversive social and/or evaluative situations, whose factor corresponds to the II dimension of the Refusal School Assessment Scale-Revised for Children (SRAS-RC). The total sample reached a total of 1920 students of 1st, 2nd and 3rd Baccalaureate enrolled in public institutes of Ecuador. The observed findings show statistically significant differences in both groups for variables such as Self-Oriented Perfectionism-Strivings (SOP-S) and Self-Oriented Perfectionism-Critical (SOP-C), with adolescents with high school rejection those who obtained higher scores in SOP-C (d = .18) and SOP-S (d = .27). In conclusion, the findings found represent a scientific advance in the educational field, taking into account the importance of not abandoning academic life for the labor, economic and social future of the country of Ecuador.

Students with School Refusal Behaviour (SRB) are a diverse group, often associated with negative academic repercussions (e.g., low academic performance, learning difficulties or academic demotivation). The aims of this research were: 1) to identify school refusal behaviour profiles based on low and high scores on the four functional conditions assessed by the School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised (SRAS-R) and 2) to examine the relationship between SRB profiles and learning strategies. The SRAS-R and the Inventory of Learning and Study Strategies-High School version were administered to 1,261 students aged to 14 to 18 (M = 16.51; SD = 1.84). Four SRB profiles were obtained: SRB by positive reinforcement, Low SRB, SRB by negative reinforcement and Mixed SRB. School refusers belonging to the Mixed SRB and SRB by negative reinforcement profiles are characterised by low scores on learning strategies, except for the Anxiety dimension. The practical implications of these findings suggest that implementing study techniques and learning strategies programmes, in addition to courses on anxiety management and self-care will help students improve their learning paths and reduce anxiety-based school refusal. Children experience significant number of stressful situations at school during their academic years. The aims of this study were to identify school refusers groups of children through latent profile analysis and to test their associations with school-related sources and manifestation of stress. Data were obtained from 755 schoolchildren (8–11 years) from public and private schools of Alicante and Murcia (Spain), using the School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised (SRAS-R) and the School Situation Survey (SSS). In general, positive and statistically significant correlations were identified between school refusal behavior and school-related sources and manifestations of stress. School refusers groups were derived from the combination of high and low scores in the four functional conditions assessed by the SRAS-R. “Low School Refusal Behavior Profile,”“School Refusal Behavior by Positive Reinforcement Profile” and “Mixed School Refusal Behavior Profile” were identified. The percentages of children within these profiles were 47.7%, 46.6%, and 5.7%, respectively. The Mixed School Refusal Behavior Profile was the group with the highest average scores in the school-related stress factors. In contrast, the group with the lowest mean scores was the Low School Refusal Behavior Profile. By comparing the Low School Refusal Behavior Profile with the Mixed School Refusal Behavior Profile, the largest effect sizes were found. Findings are discussed from a socio-ecological perspective considering the school context conditions as key elements in the development of school refusal behaviors. School refusal behaviour has a major impact on the lives of children and adolescents, seriously affecting their personal, academic and social adjustment. The objectives of this research were: (1) to identify, using latent profile analysis, school refusal behaviour profiles based on the functional model and (2) to analyse the relationship between the identified school refusal behaviour profiles and academic self-attributions in language and literature. The School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised (SRAS-R) and the Sydney Attribution Scale (SAS) were administered to 926 Spanish students (51% boys) aged 8 to 11 (M = 9.57, SD = 1.07). Four school refusal behaviour profiles were obtained: low school refusal behaviour, school refusal behaviour by positive reinforcement, mixed school refusal behaviour and high mixed school refusal behaviour. School refuser profiles, characterised by high scores on the first three factors of the SRAS-R (high mixed and mixed school refusal behaviour profiles), reported higher scores on an academic self-attributional style, in which they associate their failures with a lack of ability and effort. Results are discussed, considering the relationship between school refusal behaviour and unsuitable attributional styles in language and literature. Promoting effective coping skills to deal with school failure situations will seek to improve, as far as possible, the needs of all students contributing to a healthy learning environment.

The aim of this study is to identify the relationship between child perfectionism and academic causal self-attributions using a dual approach: variable-oriented and person-oriented. The sample consists of 431 Spanish students (49.42% girls) between the ages of eight and 11 years (M = 9.60, SD = 1.08). The Child and Adolescent Perfectionism Scale and the Sydney Attribution Scale are employed. Three perfectionism profiles are identified using latent class analysis: high perfectionism, moderate perfectionism and non-perfectionism. Non-perfectionism scores significantly higher than high and moderate perfectionism on failure and success self-attributions to external causes, although in the case of success, these differences are only significant for the language area and the total scores. In contrast, non-perfectionism scores significantly lower than the other two profiles on self-attributions of failure to lack of effort. Effect sizes for the observed differences are generally moderate (d = between 0.44 and 0.75). In addition, results of the bivariate and partial correlational analyses indicate the shared and unique relationships between perfectionist dimensions and causal self-attributions. Thus, it allows discussing the perfectionist dimension which explains the inter-class differences found. El objetivo de este estudio es analizar la relación entre el perfeccionismo infantil y las autoatribuciones causales académicas a través de un doble enfoque: centrado en la variable y en la persona. La muestra se compone de 431 estudiantes españoles (49.42% mujeres) con edades comprendidas entre los ocho y los 11 años (M = 9.60, DE = 1.08). Se utilizan la Child and Adolescent Perfectionism Scale y la Sydney Attribution Scale. A través del latent class analysis se obtiene una solución de tres perfiles perfeccionistas: perfeccionismo alto, perfeccionismo moderado y no-perfeccionismo. El grupo no-perfeccionismo obtiene puntuaciones significativamente más altas que el perfeccionismo alto y moderado en las autoatribuciones del fracaso y el éxito a causas externas, aunque en el caso del éxito, estas diferencias solo son significativas para el área de lenguaje y el total de las puntuaciones. Por el contrario, el no-perfeccionismo puntúa significativamente más bajo que los otros dos grupos en las autoatribuciones del fracaso a la falta de esfuerzo. Los tamaños del efecto para estas diferencias son, generalmente, moderados (d = entre 0.44 y 0.75). Además, los resultados de los análisis de correlaciones bivariadas y parciales muestran la relación compartida y única entre las dimensiones perfeccionistas y las autoatribuciones causales, permitiendo discutir qué dimensión perfeccionista explica las diferencias interclase encontradas. The purpose of this study was to examine the 2 × 2 model of dispositional perfectionism via a person-oriented approach in a sample of 1588 Ecuadorian students aged 12- to 18-years-old ( M = 14.83, SD = 1.86). The Child and Adolescent Perfectionism Scale (CAPS) and the School Anxiety Inventory (IAES) were employed. The statistical analysis included a non-hierarchical cluster analysis, analysis of variance (ANOVA), effect size (Cohen's d index), and bivariate and partial correlations. Four perfectionism profiles were obtained by using cluster analysis: Non-Perfectionism, Mixed Perfectionism, Pure Perfectionistic Strivings ( Pure PS) and Pure Perfectionistic Concerns ( Pure PC). Mixed Perfectionism and Pure Perfectionistic Strivings were the most maladaptive profiles whereas Non-Perfectionism was the most adaptive profile. Pure PC did not significantly differ from Mixed Perfectionism and Pure PS, with the exception of the mean scores on Anxiety about Academic Evaluation and Cognitive Anxiety. Results from bivariate and partial correlations revealed that both Perfectionistic Strivings and Perfectionistic Concerns showed shared relationships with all the dimensions of IAES. However, only Perfectionistic Concerns showed a consistent pattern of unique relationships with school anxiety. The current study provides evidenced about the importance of implementing strategies to prevent school anxiety in Ecuadorian population focused on Perfectionistic Concerns.

espanolLa literatura informa que la prevalencia de la ansiedad en edad infantil ha aumentado expo-nencialmente durante las ultimas decadas, lo que ha generado la necesidad de monitorear de forma permanente los estados emocionales, principalmente en ninos, y asi evitar las di-ficultades de esta problematica. El objetivo fue establecer diferencias en ansiedad escolar en funcion del sexo y el curso academico en estudiantes chilenos de educacion basica. Para esto se conto con 3212 alumnos de 30 colegios de Nuble, en Chile, 1639 ninas y 1573 ninos, en edades entre los ocho y los 15 anos (M = 10,05, DT = 1,01). La ansiedad escolar se evaluo con el Inventario de ansiedad escolar para educacion primaria, el cual evalua tres sistemas de respuesta (cognitiva, conductual y psicofisiologica), y cuatro factores situacionales (ansiedad ante el castigo escolar, ansiedad ante la victimizacion, ansiedad ante la evaluacion social y ansiedad ante la evaluacion y el fracaso escolar). Los resultados indican que las ninas presentan niveles de ansiedad significativamente mayores que los ninos, aunque de pequena magnitud. Con respecto al curso academico, se observan diferencias estadisticamente significativas entre 4° y 5°, entre 4° y 6° y entre 5° y 6° ano. Estos resultados corroboran los obtenidos en investigaciones previas y alertan sobre su permanencia en el tiempo. EnglishThe literature reports that the prevalence of anxiety in childhood has increased exponen-tially during the last decades, generating with it the need to permanently monitor emotional states mainly in children and thus avoid the difficulties of this problem. The objective was to establish differences in school anxiety according to gender and academic course in Chil-ean students of basic education. The sample consisted of 3212 students from 30 schools in Nuble, in Chile, 1639 girls and 1573 children and ages between 8 and 15 years (M = 10,05, DT = 1,01), school anxiety was evaluated with the School Anxiety Inventory for children of Elementary Education, which evaluates three response systems (cognitive, behavioral and psychophysiological), and four situational factors (anxiety about social assessment, anxiety about evaluation and school failure, school punishment and anxiety about victimization). The results indicate that girls have significantly higher anxiety levels than boys, although of small magnitude. Regarding the academic year, there are statistically significant differences between 4th and 5th, between 4th and 6th and between 5th and 6th year. These results corroborate those obtained in previous research and alert about the permanence of them over time.

Currently, the enormous quantity of research on cyberbullying during adolescence contrasts with those studies carried out in the university environment. The objective of this study was to analyze the predictive capacity of family environment and emotional intelligence with regard to cyberbullying in university students. The European Cyberbullying Intervention Project Questionnaire, the Social Climate in the Family Scale and the Trait Meta-Mood Scale-24 were administered to a sample of 1282 university students (594 men and 688 women) between the ages of 18 and 46 (M = 21.65; DT = 4.25). The results revealed that a deteriorated family environment increases the probability of being both a victim and an aggressor of cyberbullying, whereas a favorable family environment decreases this probability. Likewise, the dimensions of emotional intelligence were predictive variables of participation as victims or aggressors of cyberbullying. The conclusions of this study are of special relevance given that they do not only bring about a problem that has a little knowledge of the university setting, but because they also note that intervention programs should consider the influence of the family environment during the early adulthood period, as well as the relevance of emotional level of these university students.

Tradicionalmente la educación ha dejado de lado las aportaciones procedentes del ámbito de la medicina, y en concreto de la neurociencia, centrándose principalmente en el proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje. Sin embargo, en los últimos años han ido surgiendo contribuciones y modelos teóricos desde la neuropsicología, que han dado lugar a la aparición de la neuroeducación o neurociencia educacional. Se trata de un campo científico interdisciplinar que estudia la interacción entre los procesos neuronales, psicológicos y la educación con el propósito de mejorar el proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje en el estudiante. El presente estudio tiene el objetivo de realizar una revisión de los hallazgos de la neurociencia que pueden ayudar a la mejora del currículo educativo en las distintas competencias educativas y al proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje en estudiantes con y sin necesidades educativas especiales. Los resultados de los estudios neuropsicológicos han mostrado la eficacia de las técnicas neuropsicológicas. Por lo tanto, se concluye que es el momento de incluir de forma transversal las aportaciones de la neurociencia en las aulas. Traditionally, education has left aside the contributions coming from the field of medicine, and specifically from neuroscience, focusing mainly on the teaching and learning process. However, in recent years contributions and theoretical models have been emerging from neuropsychology, which have led to the emergence of neuroeducation or educational neuroscience. It is an interdisciplinary scientific field that studies the interaction between neuronal, psychological processes and education with the purpose of improving the teaching and learning process in the student. The present study aims to review the findings of neuroscience that can help improve the educational curriculum in the different educational competencies and the teaching-learning process in students with and without special educational needs. The results of neuropsychological studies have shown the efficacy of neuropsychological techniques. Therefore, it is concluded that it is time to include transversally the contributions of neuroscience in the classrooms.

The maladaptive nature of Perfectionistic Automatic Thoughts (PAT) increases the importance of evaluating the construct. This study aims to identify different clusters of PAT in undergraduates, and to check possible inter-cluster differences in the dimensions of dispositional empathy and emotional intelligence in a sample of 691 Spanish undergraduates (Mage = 23.1; SD = 5.26). The Perfectionism Cognitions Inventory, the Interpersonal Reactivity Index and the Trait Meta-Mood Scale were used. Three clusters with low (LPAT), moderate (MPAT) and high (HPAT) levels of PAT were identified. Statistically significant differences were observed between these clusters in terms of dispositional empathy and emotional intelligence dimensions. HPAT significantly scored higher than LPAT on Fantasy, Empathic Concern, Personal Discomfort and Perception, as well as in comparison with MPAT on Fantasy, Empathic Concern, Personal Discomfort and Perception. Moreover, MPAT obtained significantly higher scores on Comprehension and Repair than LPAT. Effect sizes for these differences were of a small magnitude, except for the HPAT and LPAT contrasts, whose differences were of a moderate magnitude.

Perfectionism is considered to be a significant personality factor within the sport and exercise field. However, very little is known about the reasons why individuals with different perfectionistic tendencies engage or not in physical activity. This study aims, from a person-oriented approach, to analyze if participation motives and barriers may differ among four perfectionistic profiles: Non-Perfectionists (low perfectionistic strivings, PS, and perfectionistic concerns, PC), Adaptive Perfectionists (high PS and low PC), Maladaptive Perfectionists (high PS and PC), and Moderate Perfectionists (moderate PS and PC). A sample composed of 597 (Mage = 22.08, SD = 3.33) undergraduates enrolled in a sport science degree from Ecuador participated in this study. Non-Perfectionists reported lower levels of motives, whereas Adaptive and Maladaptive Perfectionists reported higher scores on all participation motives. Significant and positive correlations were found between PS and both autonomous and controlled motives, whereas PC was positively correlated with controlled reasons and only significantly correlated with some autonomous reasons by the effect of PS. In terms of barriers, Maladaptive Perfectionists reported significantly higher scores on all barriers analyzed in comparison with the other three profiles, with moderate and large effect sizes. The results of the bivariate and partial correlations suggest that these inter-profile differences were explained by PC. Considering the results, it is advised to develop strategies to identify Maladaptive Perfectionists in order to increase their intrinsic reasons for practicing physical exercise, and to minimize their perceived barriers.

This study aims to identify different school refusal behavior profiles and to determine whether these profiles differ from each other based on four situational factors and three response systems of school anxiety across gender. The participants were 1,685 Spanish students (49% female) aged 15–18 years (M = 16.28; SD =0.97). The School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised (SRAS-R) and the School Anxiety Inventory (SAI) were administered. Latent profile analysis revealed five school refusal behavior profiles: Non-School Refusal Behavior, Mixed School Refusal Behavior, School Refusal Behavior by Positive Reinforcement, Low School Refusal Behavior, and High School Refusal Behavior. The results indicated that High School Refusal Behavior and Mixed School Refusal Behavior groups were the most maladaptive profiles since it obtained the highest mean scores on school anxiety. In contrast, Non-School Refusal and School Refusal Behavior by Positive Reinforcement groups revealed the lowest scores in school anxiety. Non-significant gender-based differences were found, only girls were more represented in the mixed school refusal behavior profile in comparison with boys but with a small effect size. Findings are discussed in relation to the importance of promoting good mental health to prevent school attendance problems in adolescents and younger ages. As aggressive behaviors emerge at early ages, is necessary to analyze this construct and its relationship with emotional variables as soon as possible to plan more effective interventions. This work has three main goals. First, to validate the scores of the Aggression Questionnaire Short Form (AQ-SF) in a random sample of 1202 Spanish children (M = 10.09, SD = 1.31, 51% girls), considering its factorial invariance across sex and age and possible differences as a function of these variables. Second, to identify aggression profiles based on the AQ-SF and, finally, to analyze possible differences in school anxiety based on these profiles. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the four-dimensional structure of the AQ-SF scores. Factorial invariance analysis of this model across sex and age confirmed that the model maintains the same structure in boys and girls and different age groups. Latent mean analysis identified significant sex and age differences. Five aggression profiles (High, Moderate High, High Physical, Moderate Low, and Low) were identified using latent profile analysis, and differential functioning of those profiles was found across the dimensions of school anxiety. Results show the adequacy of the AQ-SF scores in Spanish child population and provide relevant data to plan psychoeducational interventions. The rise of technology has increased risks such as problematic internet use or cyberbullying. Data show that there is problematic use of the internet, which has important repercussions academically, personally, socially and for health. The objective of this study was to identify different profiles that vary according to intra- and interpersonal conflicts related to internet use. In addition, this study aimed to examine whether there are significant differences in bullying and cyberbullying among adolescents with a conflict related to internet use. The study participants were 810 students of Compulsory Secondary Education (M = 13.99, SD = 1.32). The Questionnaire on School Violence and the Questionnaire of Experiences Related to Internet was use. The latent profile analysis identified four different types of conflicts related to internet use: (a) high levels in intra- and interpersonal conflicts, (b) low levels intra- and interpersonal conflicts, (c) moderate intra- and interpersonal conflicts and (d) very high levels in intra- and interpersonal conflicts. The results of the study indicated that there were significant differences in the manifestations of school violence between the profiles. This study assists in educational programs to prevent conflicts related to internet use and school violence through emotional adjustment.

Perfectionistic Automatic Thoughts (PATs) are currently being studied due to their association with maladaptive variables. This study aims to validate the Spanish version of the Perfectionism Cognitions Inventory (PCI) in a sample of Ecuadorian undergraduates as well as to analyze latent mean differences across sex. The sample was composed by 3060 undergraduates (Mage = 22.7, SD = 2.46). The Spanish model of the PCI composed by 17 items divided into three first-order dimensions (perfectionistic concerns, strivings, and demands) and a second-order factor was supported by confirmatory factor analysis. Acceptable levels of reliability and factorial invariance across sex were observed. Higher latent mean scores for males in comparison with females in the second-order factor of the PCI were found. The three dimensions of the PCI significantly and positively correlated with interpersonal difficulties. Overall, results demonstrate that the Spanish version of the PCI is a valid and reliable measure to evaluate PATs in Ecuadorian undergraduates.

Background: This study aimed to validate the Spanish version of the Child and Adolescent Perfectionism Scale (CAPS) in Ecuadorian adolescent population. Methods: The study involved 1,562 students aged 12 to 18 (Mage = 14.83, SD = 1.86) from Quito (Ecuador). Data analysis included Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) with Satorra-Bentler scaled χ², Cronbach's alpha coefficients, Pearson's correlations, and Multigroup CFA to test factorial invariance across sex and age (configural, measurement and structural). Latent means differences were also examined across sex and age groups. Results: Results confirmed the structure of Spanish version of the CAPS with 13 items divided into three factors, Socially Prescribed Perfectionism (SPP), Self-Oriented Perfectionism-Critical (SOP-C) and Self-Oriented-Striving (SOP-S). Additionally, this model remained invariant across sex and age. Significant and positive correlations were obtained between SPP, SOP-C and the three measures of psychological distress (Anxiety, Depression and Stress), whereas SOP-S showed a more adaptive pattern of association. Acceptable reliability values were obtained and latent mean differences across sex and age groups were mainly observed in the SOP-S factor. Concretely, males reported significantly higher latent mean scores than females in SOP-S as well as students aged from 14 to 18 years old in comparison with their younger peers (12- and 13-year olds). Conclusions: The Spanish version of the CAPS has satisfactory psychometric properties in terms of validity and reliability remaining invariant across sex and age in Ecuadorian adolescents.

La relevancia psicológica, social y educativa del presente estudio reside en la escasez de trabajos previos que hayan evaluado el rechazo escolar en Latinoamérica y las elevadas tasas de deserción a las que se enfrentan en esta región. El objetivo de esta investigación consistió en examinar las diferencias en las puntuaciones medias de rechazo escolar y la formación de perfiles en adolescentes ecuatorianos y chilenos. Un total de 4266 estudiantes, entre 13 y 17 años de edad, procedentes de Ecuador (M = 14.83; SD = 1.86) y Chile (M = 15.23; SD = 1.26) fueron seleccionados mediante un muestreo aleatorio por conglomerados. El instrumento empleado para evaluar el rechazo escolar fue la School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised. Las puntuaciones medias de rechazo escolar para Ecuador y Chile revelaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas de pequeña magnitud. Entre los estudiantes chilenos se registraron puntuaciones medias más altas de rechazo escolar, con el fin de captar la atención de sus seres queridos y obtener reforzadores tangibles externos a la escuela, en comparación con sus iguales procedentes de Ecuador. Los análisis de conglomerados confirmaron cuatro perfiles de rechazo escolar en ambos países: Rechazo Escolar Bajo, Rechazo Escolar Alto, Rechazo Escolar Ansioso y Rechazo Escolar Absentista. A pesar de que los adolescentes chilenos obtuvieron puntuaciones medias significativamente más altas que los ecuatorianos en algunas dimensiones del rechazo escolar, los resultados revelaron una pequeña variabilidad entre los perfiles de rechazo escolar encontrados en ambos países. Los resultados obtenidos se discuten atendiendo a las características culturales definitorias de cada uno de estos países. School refusal behavior is defined as any child or youth’s difficulty to attend classes or to remain in the school. This behavior could be based or not on anxiety and prevalence rates from 5 to 28 % if it is considered any type of rejection towards the school. Adolescents demonstrating school refusal behaviors are very likely to demonstrate poorer academic performance, more stress, behavior problems and family conflicts. The psychological, social and educational relevance of the present study is due to the scarce of previous studies that have evaluated the school refusal behavior in Latin America and the high dropout rates that they face in this region. This study is focused on two countries, Ecuador and Chile, in order to identify possible differences regarding school refusal behavior scores between adolescents in both countries. The aim of this investigation was to examine the mean differences scores on school refusal behavior and the formation of school refusal behavior profiles in Ecuadorian and Chilean adolescents to determine whether these results differ from one another based on the geographical origin. In this study participated a total of 4266 students aged between 13 and 17 years old from Ecuador (M = 14.83, SD = 1.86; N = 1588) and Chile (M = 15.23; SD = 1.26; N = 2678). These students were selected by cluster random sampling. The measure used to assess the school refusal behavior was the School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised (SRAS-R). The SRAS-R is a self-report measure that assesses the relative strength of four proposed functions, or maintaining variables, of school refusal behavior: Factor I. Avoidance of school-based stimuli that provoke Negative Affectivity; Factor II. Escape from aversive Social/Evaluative situations at school; Factor III. Pursuit of Attention from Significant others; and Factor IV. Pursuit of Tangible Reinforcement outside of school. The SRAS-R was administered during the school day (a session of approximately 20 minutes) in groups who completed the scale anonymously in accordance with the ethical standards and also emphasizing the voluntary nature of the test. Regarding the results, mean differences scores on school refusal behavior revealed statistically significant differences of small magnitude with Chilean students reaching higher mean scores in school refusal behavior in order to pursuit the attention from significant others and to obtain tangible reinforces external to the school, in comparison with their equals from Ecuador. Cluster analysis confirmed four school refusal profiles in both countries: Low School Refusal Behavior (characterized by low school refusal behavior scores for the four factors of the SRAS-R), High School Refusal Behavior (characterized by high school refusal behavior scores for the four factors of the SRAS- R), Anxious School Refusal Behavior (profile that combines high scores on the first three factors of the SRAS-R and moderate scores for the fourth) and Absentee School Refusal Behavior (profile that combines moderate levels for the first three factors of the SRAS-R but high in the fourth factor). The results revealed a small variability between the school refusal behavior profiles across the countries. However, Chilean adolescents scored significantly higher than Ecuadorians in school refusal based on the search for tangible external reinforcements. The results of this research supported a low variability of the findings according to the country. The generalization of these results supports the transcultural validity of the SRAS-R and emphasizes that Ecuador and Chile share a similar situation regarding school refusal behavior. Some limitations of this work are considered, and they are proposed as future lines of research. To conclude, the results are discussed taking into account the defining cultural characteristics of each country. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI), generativity and self-efficacy, identifying different profiles of emotional intelligence. 834 secondary school teachers participated in the study by completing the Trait Meta-Mood Scale&ndash, 24 (TMMS&ndash, 24), the Loyola Generativity Scale and the General Self-Efficacy Scale. Cluster analysis identified four EI profiles: the first with high scores in attention and low scores in repair, the second with high scores in all dimensions of EI, the third with low scores in all EI dimensions and a fourth profile with low scores in attention and high scores in repair. Results showed significant statistical differences between the EI profiles found and the different dimensions of generativity and self-efficacy. Logistic regression analysis showed that EI was a statistically significant predictor of generativity, since teachers with high EI scores were more likely to present high scores in positive generativity and self-efficacy and lower probability of presenting high scores in generative doubts.

This study complements extant variable-centered research that focus on the relationship between perfectionism and the autonomous and controlled motivation to exercise. A person-centered approach is used for identifying perfectionism profiles as well as analyzing inter-profile differences in terms of the six regulatory styles located on the autonomy-control continuum. A sample of 597 (Mage = 22.08, SD = 3.33) Ecuadorian undergraduates enrolled in a sport science degree program was employed. Latent Profile Analysis based on two higher-order perfectionism dimensions, Perfectionistic Strivings (PS) and Perfectionistic Concerns (PC), supported a four-class solution: Non-Perfectionists (low PS and PC), Adaptive Perfectionists (high PS and low PC), Maladaptive Perfectionists (high PS and PC), and Moderate Perfectionists (moderate PS and PC). Adaptive Perfectionists obtained the highest means on Intrinsic, Integrated, and Identified regulations. However, these differences where only significant when compared with Moderate Perfectionists, and only in the case of Integrated regulation, in comparison with Non-Perfectionists. In contrast, Maladaptive Perfectionists obtained significantly higher scores on Introjected and External regulations as well as on Amotivation than the other three classes. Results are discussed in light of Self-Determination Theory.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in children and adolescents. People who have this disorder are characterized by presenting difficulties in the processes of sustained attention, being very active, and having poor control of their impulses. Despite the high prevalence of this disorder and the existence of various tests used for its diagnosis, few data are available regarding the usefulness and diagnostic validity of these tools. Given the difficulties that these subjects present in executive functions, the aim of this study was to evaluate whether the Neuropsychological Assessment of Executive Functions battery for Children (ENFEN, for its acronym in Spanish, Portellano et al., 2009) allows to establish specific profiles of executive performance for people with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The sample was made up of 197 participants of both sexes, aged between 6 and 12 years age (134 with a clinical diagnosis and 63 without pathology). A nonexperimental design was followed, using a comparative descriptive study method. The results indicated that the scales of phonological fluency, color path, rings, and interference are the most associated with the diagnosis of ADHD, providing data on inhibition, mental flexibility, sustained and selective attention, planning, verbal fluency, and working memory, among others. The practical implication of these results is in line with providing support in the clinical diagnosis that is carried out in children’s mental health units. In addition, the ENFEN tool can be valued as a suitable psychometric instrument in the psychoeducational field, helping professionals in a school environment to be more aware of the areas of cognitive development in which a student diagnosed with ADHD will have more difficulties and, in doing so, providing more adjusted and effective psychopedagogical measures when it comes to supporting students in their adaptation to the school environment.

Burnout syndrome is has been associated with mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, and stress. Given this fact, some teachers implement various coping strategies for emotional control that are not always functional to mitigate such difficulties. Accordingly, this study aimed to identify different burnout profiles that vary in the levels of the three underlying dimensions: depersonalization (DE), emotional exhaustion (EE), and personal accomplishment (PA). Further, this study aimed to examine whether there are significant differences in depressive symptomatology, coping strategies, and the quality of interpersonal relationships at school between teachers with varying burnout profiles. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), Coping with Stress Questionnaire, and a questionnaire that measured sociodemographic characteristics were administered to 215 teachers (men: 42.8%) who were recruited from various secondary schools. Cluster analysis identified three different burnout profiles: groups of teachers with a predominance of (a) low levels of EE and high levels of PA, (b) high levels of EE and DE, and (c) low levels of DE and PA. The results revealed that there were significant differences in coping strategies, depressive symptomatology, and the quality of interpersonal relationships at school between teachers with different burnout profiles. These results have important implications for educational professionals. Specifically, the findings underscore the need for prevention and intervention programs that enhance teachers' emotional skills, especially their ability to cope with exhaustion. These skills will alleviate their depression and consequently offer both teachers and students a conducive learning environment.

Little scientific attention has been paid to the problem of cyberbullying in the university environment, compared to similar studies conducted on adolescents. This study attempts to analyze the predictive capacity of certain emotional problems (anxiety, depression, and stress) and university adaptation with respect to cyberbullying in victims and aggressors. The European Cyberbullying Intervention Project Questionnaire, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 and the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire were administered to a sample of 1282 university students (46.33% male) aged between 18 and 46. The results suggest that high levels of depression and stress increase the probability of being a cyberbullying victim, while high levels of depression increase the probability of being a cyberbullying aggressor. Similarly, the personal–emotional and social adaptation of students are found to be predictor variables of being a cyberbullying victim, in that high levels of personal–emotional and social adaptation decrease the probability of being a victim, while high levels of personal–emotional, academic and institutional adaptation decrease the probability of being a cyberbullying victim. The results of this study are of special relevance, since they indicate that intervention programs should consider the influence of emotional intelligence, as well as the relevance students’ adaptation to university.

Research on perfectionism is gaining importance. However, there is a lack of research findings on perfectionistic automatic thoughts (PATs). Accordingly, the first aim of this study was to validate a newly developed Spanish version of the Perfectionistic Cognitions Inventory. The second aim was to ascertain different profiles of PATs and examine intercluster differences in social anxiety. A sample of seven hundred ninety-eight 21–43-year-old Spanish undergraduate students (Mage = 23.2 years, SD = 5.28) participated in the study. A model that consisted of 17 items situated within three first-order factors, namely, perfectionistic strivings, demands, and concerns, which loaded onto a second-order factor, namely, PATs, was found to be the best fit for the data. Cluster analysis identified three profiles of PATs. The group that obtained the highest scores on all three dimensions of PATs also obtained the highest scores on a measure of social anxiety. Burnout is a reality in the teaching profession. Specifically, teaching staff usually have higher burnout rates. The present study aims to analyze the different burnout profiles and to verify if there were differences between burnout profiles in depressive symptomatology and in the self-esteem of the teachers at school. The total number of participants was 210 teachers from 30 to 65 years. The first scale was the Maslach burnout inventory, the second scale was the Self-Rating depression scale and the third scale was the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. The latent class analysis identified three burnout profiles: the first group with a high level of emotional exhaustion, low personal accomplishment and depersonalization (high burnout), the second group with low emotional exhaustion, low depersonalization and high personal accomplishment (low burnout) and the third group with low depersonalization, low emotional exhaustion and low personal accomplishment (moderate burnout). The results revealed that there were differences in depressive symptomatology (group 1 obtained higher scores than group 2 and group 3) and self-esteem (group 2 obtained higher scores than group 1). The psychological balance and health of teachers depend on preventing the factors that have been associated with this syndrome.

The aim of the present study was to assess the predictive capacity of several of the most relevant cognitive skills in the academic field that were evaluated using Differential and General Skills Battery(BADyG-E2r). Particular attention was focused on the variables that need to be overcome regarding the curricular objectives related to pass/fail grading as evaluated by the teachers in the instrumental disciplines of Mathematics and Language. The psychometric battery was applied to the 3rd year students in primary education (a total of 512 students) at 4 public schools that were randomly selected in the province of Alicante (Spain). A follow-up of their academic evolution was under taken until the end of primary education. The obtained results show that high scores in Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Reasoning, and Verbal Syllogisms positively and significantly predict academic success at the end of primary education in the subjects of Language and Mathematics.

The use of mobile phones has great benefits for communication. However, evidence has shown that problematic use, such as cyberbullying, can also be associated with mobile phones. In this sense, emotional regulation plays an important role. The objective of this study was to identify different groups that varied in terms of conflicts related to problematic mobile phone use (namely, maladaptive communication and emotional patterns). Furthermore, the study aimed to examine whether there were significant differences in the dimensions of emotional intelligence and cyberbullying between adolescents with a mobile phone use problem. The study participants were 810 students aged between 12 and 16 years. The Emotional Coefficient Inventory questionnaire about cyberbullying and a questionnaire on experiences related to mobile phones were used. The cluster analysis identified three different types of mobile phone use: A group displaying no problematic use, a group displaying moderately problematic use, and a group displaying problematic use. The study results motivate carrying out stress management programs, emotional re-education, and other actions that reinforce emotional intelligence.

Anxiety is a common mental health factor associated with school refusal behaviour. This study aims to identify different school refusal behaviour profiles and to determine whether or not these profiles differ from each other based on three anxiety dimensions (Anticipatory Anxiety, School-based performance anxiety and Generalized Anxiety). Participants were Spanish children (N = 1113; 52.3% male) aged 8–11 years (M = 9.53; SD = 1.10). The School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised (SRAS-R) and the Visual Analogue Scale for Anxiety-Revised (VAA-R) were administered. Cluster analysis revealed four school refusal behaviour profiles: Non-School refusal, School Refusal by Positive Reinforcement, School Refusal by Negative Reinforcement, and School Refusal by Mixed Reinforcement. The Mixed Reinforcement group was the most maladaptive profile since it obtained the highest mean scores on the three dimensions and the total score of the VAA-R. In contrast, Non-School Refusal and Positive Reinforcement groups revealed the lowest scores in all of the anxiety dimensions. Our findings underscore the idea certain school refusal behaviour profiles have a higher risk of presenting anxious symptoms. In these cases, the control of anxiety may be an important goal of preventive interventions. The aim of this meta-analysis was to examine the effectiveness of sex education programs for people with intellectual disabilities, exploring the effects of possible moderating variables. 31 independent studies were identified, from 8 research reports published between 1988 and 2017. The results revealed mean effect sizes in favor of the experimental group, being of large magnitude for the components inappropriate behaviors (d = − 1.26) and Decision making (d = − 1.03), and of moderate magnitude for the global effect (d = − .64). The analyses revealed that single-sex groups, publications between 2000 and 2009 and a high degree of training and experience to deliver the programs were moderating variables that had a great effect on the effectiveness of the programs for the global effect component. Similar results were obtained for the decision making dimension while no significant moderating variables were found for the inappropriate behaviors dimension. Understanding how effective sex educational programs work is essential to this social group. Practical implications are discussed from the results obtained.

The devastating consequences of cyberbullying during adolescence justify the relevance of obtaining empirical evidence on the factors that may cause participation in its distinct roles. The goal of this study was to analyze the predictive capacity of aggressiveness (physical aggression, verbal aggression, anger, and hostility) and emotional intelligence (attention, understanding, and emotional regulation) with respect to being a victim, aggressor or victim&ndash, aggressor of cyberbullying during adolescence. The Screening for Peer Bullying, the Aggressiveness Questionnaire and the Trait Meta-Mood Scale-24 were administered to a sample of 1102 Spanish secondary education students, aged 12 to 18. In general, results revealed a higher probability of being a victim, aggressor or victim&ndash, aggressor as physical aggressiveness and anger increased. On the other hand, results revealed a low probability of being a victim, aggressor or victim&ndash, aggressor as emotional understanding and emotional regulation increased. These findings highlight the importance of considering said variables when creating prevention programs to stop or reduce the social and educational issue of cyberbullying during adolescence.

The aim of this study was twofold: to identify different emotional intelligence (EI) profiles and to verify possible statistically significant differences in school refusal factors that result in a demotivation to attend school. Participants were 2362 Chilean adolescents aged from 13 to 17 (M = 15.25; SD = 1.33), who completed the Trait Meta-Mood Scale-24 (TMMS-24) and the School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised (SRAS-R). Cluster analysis identified four EI profiles: high scores in repair and low in attention, high scores in attention and low in clarity and repair, low EI and high EI. Students with high scores in attention and low in repair scored higher in the first three factors of the SRAS-R, whereas in the fourth factor of the SRAS-R, students with high EI had significantly higher scores. Emotional regulation seems to be one of the determinant factors to prevent the appearance of school refusal. Based on these findings, we recommend that EI training be a part of future programs to overcome school attendance demotivation issues. School attendance problems imply a serious threat to a child’s academic, social and emotional development. The aim of this study was to validate the Spanish version of the School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised (SRAS-R) in Ecuadorian adolescents. Participants were 1786 students (51% boys) aged 15 to 18 years (M = 16.31; SD = 1.01) randomly selected from 12 high schools located in different geographic zones of Quito (Ecuador). The measures used were the SRAS-R, the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 and the School Anxiety Inventory. Results supported the four-factor structure (I. Avoidance of Negative Affectivity, II. Escape from Social and/or Evaluative situations, III. Pursuit of Attention and IV. Pursuit of Tangible Reinforcement). This model remained invariant across gender and age and adequate levels of internal consistency were obtained for the factors (.77, .81, .75 and .71). Girls reported higher levels of Escaping from Social Evaluation than boys, and boys reported higher levels of Pursuing Tangible Reinforcements than girls. The oldest students (17–18 years) scored higher on Avoiding Negative Affectivity and Escape from Social or Evaluation situations than the younger students. Discriminant validity was examined and significant correlations with other measures were found. These findings provide initial support for the use of the SRAS-R as a measure to assess school refusal in Ecuadorian adolescents.
