This manuscript is an outgrowth of an invited panel presentation at the national Association for Psychologists in Academic Health Centers Conference in 2017 on Interprofessional Education (IPE). IPE is a structured and transformative educational strategy designed to provide active learning experiences where trainees from diverse healthcare professions gain shared content knowledge plus collaboration skills as they learn about, from, and with each other. Collaboration skills include understanding professional role distinctions and overlap, effective team-based communication, shared values/ethics and respect for each other's expertise, and teamwork dynamics. It is increasingly important to expand training beyond the intraprofessional activities in which psychology trainees engage to prepare them to participate in interprofessional collaborative care. As healthcare systems move to team-based collaborative practice and value-based reimbursement models, the profession of psychology needs leaders at every academic health center to facilitate the design and/or implementation of IPE activities. The panel of psychologists presented roles that psychologists play in IPE institutional program design and implementation, graduate training programs, and the perspectives of an early career psychologist and psychology trainee. Opportunities and challenges are highlighted, culminating in a call to action. Psychologists must embrace their identity as health professionals and engage their learners in IPE so that the emerging cognitive schemata of healthcare that is developed includes the profession of psychology. Otherwise, healthcare teams and health professionals will not understand the value, roles, or potential contributions of psychologists in enhancing patient care outcomes, ultimately jeopardizing psychologists' referrals, involvement in healthcare delivery, and career opportunities.

Primary care pediatricians and psychology practitioners who comanage mental health problems can develop interdisciplinary communication and collaborative skills from joint standardized patient encounters and debriefings, combined with brief didactics. The present study compared the impact of face to face teaching with a short online game informed learning activity on health participants' knowledge about, and confidence in, managing aggressive situations. Both forms of teaching resulted in a significant increase in participants' knowledge and confidence. Face to face training led to significantly greater increases in knowledge but was equivalent in terms of confidence. Both forms of teaching were rated positively, but face to face teaching received significantly higher ratings than the online activity. The study suggests that short online game informed learning activities may offer an effective alternative for health professional training where face to face training is not possible. Further research is needed on the longer term impact of both types of training on practice.

All proposals for a reform of the study of medicine recommend problem-based teaching and learning methods. The rapid increase in the number of medical faculties abroad offering experimental courses along these lines is an indicator of their usefulness. The results of empirical research also suggest that departments of medical psychology, psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy should participate more closely in the introduction and exploration of the advantages of this didactic approach.

The four-component instructional design model (4C/ID) is actively used in the field of education abroad; however, there are only some scientific publications describing the experience of its application in the realities of Russian higher education. An overview of the instructional design using the 4C/ID model and an analysis of the experience of its application in the field of higher education on the example of three cases described in the scientific literature, corresponding to different subject areas (information technology, the humanities, medicine), are provided. General scientific theoretical methods of analysis, synthesis, and classification were applied; international and Russian databases (Scopus, Web of Science, eLibrary) as the base of scientific sources were used. The history of the development of the model has been reconstructed. Constructivism and social constructivism, cognitive apprenticeship, integrated learning, cognitive load theory, and transfer learning ideas are the essential theoretical foundations for 4C/ID. The four main components of the model are described: learning tasks, supportive information, part-task practice, and procedural information. Ten instructional design steps are reconstructed that sequentially develop these constituent elements and their relationships. The advantages, disadvantages, limitations of this model are analyzed and described. Recommendations for designers and teachers related to the model's features are formulated. The results obtained can contribute to developing the practice of learning design and the adaptation of modern models of instructional design in Russian universities.

Amidst the COVID-19, which has necessitated the widespread use of distant learning, there has been a notable increase in the recognition and utilization of inventive pedagogical methods and technological tools in the field of language teaching. The primary objective of this research is to assess the effects of DingTalk-based PBL on the business vocabulary growth of Chinese undergraduates during the pandemic, with a particular focus on remote learning environments. This mixed-methods research employed a sample of 58 participants. The study involved both quantitative vocabulary assessments and qualitative interviews. The quantitative assessments aimed to measure the impact on vocabulary scores, while qualitative interviews were conducted to gather insights into participants’ experiences and perceptions regarding DingTalk-based PBL. The quantitative assessment revealed a significant improvement in business vocabulary scores among the participants who underwent DingTalk-based PBL. This result indicates the platform’s potential to enhance language acquisition. The qualitative interviews provided further insights, with participants expressing positive attitudes toward DingTalk-based PBL. They emphasized its capacity to sustain engagement, foster collaboration, and bridge the gap between remote learning and effective language acquisition. These findings underscore the transformative potential of DingTalk-based PBL in language education, especially in the context of challenges posed by the pandemic. While recognizing the constraints of this study, such as its limited duration and restricted contextual applicability, the research encourages further investigation into sustainable vocabulary expansion, the development of multifaceted language abilities, and the integration of these platforms into emerging hybrid educational frameworks. This study makes a valuable contribution to the ongoing discourse regarding novel technology-based methods in language instruction, providing relevant insights applicable to both present and future educational contexts.

Multiple research studies have shown active learning can increase student performance, reduce fail rates, and increase the success of marginalized students in STEM. In this mini-review we discuss a simple framework for planning and implementing active learning in the classroom. We provide seven strategies to support faculty members who want to implement this framework, with five suggested teaching activities and two mechanisms of creating space in the lecture to use the activities. Each strategy is given with a foundational research paper describing the evidence that it improves learning, engagement and inclusion in the classroom. We include our own experiences using these strategies in large biology lectures that had segments devoted to neuroscience topics, but they are effective in smaller classes as well.

A biography of Michelene T. H. Chi, a recipient of an award for distinguished scientific applications of psychology whose work has led to new conceptualizations of the nature of expertise and of nature and structure of children's knowledge, is presented. Chi was born in a government-owned palace in Chiang, Mai, Thailand because her father was a diplomat. They moved to Indonesia when she was three years old. Also mentioned are her education and her career background.

Problem-based learning (PBL) has been used in different domains, and there is overwhelming evidence of its value. As an emerging field with excellent prospects, learning analytics (LA)—especially multimodal learning analytics (MMLA)—has increasingly attracted the attention of researchers in PBL. However, current research on the integration of LA with PBL has not related LA results with specific PBL steps or paid enough attention to the interaction in peer learning, especially for text data generated from peer interaction. This study employed MMLA based on machine learning (ML) to quantify the process engagement of peer learning, identify log behaviors, self-regulation, and other factors, and then predict online PBL performance. Participants were 104 fourth-year students in an online course on social work and problem-solving. The MMLA model contained multimodal data from online discussions, log files, reports, and questionnaires. ML classification models were built to classify text data in online discussions. The results showed that self-regulation, messages post, message words, and peer learning engagement in representation, solution, and evaluation were predictive of online PBL performance. Hierarchical linear regression analyses indicated stronger predictive validity of the process indicators on online PBL performance than other indicators. This study addressed the scarcity of students’ process data and the inefficiency of analyzing text data, as well as providing information on targeted learning strategies to scaffold students in online PBL.

Contribution: This multicase study compares computer orchestrated learning together (COLT) and student orchestrated learning together (SOLT) in cooperatively preparing first year university students for collaborative activities. COLT using computer orchestrated group learning environment (COGLE) was perceived efficient, effective, and inclusive for team effectiveness as it helps build domain knowledge and trust between neurologically typical (NT) and/or neurologically atypical (NAT) teammates. This study confirms existing and identifies two new antecedents for trust, namely, resolving cognitive conflicts and real-time updates to domain knowledge. Background: Industrial and organizational psychology literature links effective teamworking with domain knowledge and trust. Building team trust within a short period can be challenging, in particular in mixed teams of NT and NAT students. Facilitating teamwork can be resource hungry. Educational studies on trust and teamwork are therefore rare. Research Questions: This study investigates how orchestration affects teamwork by asking: 1) how does computer and student orchestration affect domain knowledge acquisition in NT and NAT students? and 2) how does computer and student orchestration affect the development of trust between NT and/or NAT students? Methodology: Both qualitative and quantitative data were captured at multiple points within multiple (literal and theoretical replication) cases. Case summaries and a cross-case analysis provided further data and the methodological triangulation needed for analytical generalization. Findings: COGLE’s scaffolding and nonsocial prompts for cooperation, shared goal orientation, shared monitoring, and shared working not only helped NT and NAT students learn together but also helped develop team-trust quickly. Higher education plays the role of cultivating talents in national development and meets the talent sources needed by the development of the state, industries and enterprises. Besides, for students, higher education can provide stimuli to improve the development of family and personal career. Especially for socioeconomically disadvantaged Students, higher education means the main factor for turning over the Socio- Economic Status. Universities endow students with abundant employment skills, so as to make them more confident in contending with the challenges in the job market. However, innate pessimism or negative attitudes and cognition may exist in socioeconomically disadvantaged Students, thereby providing effective learning context to improve their learning engagement. This study explores the influence on students’ career decision status from deep approach to learning, problem-based learning, self-efficacy and employability. A total of 627 valid questionnaires are collected in this study. PLS-SEM was adopted to verify the structural relationship in data analysis via SmartPLS. The results indicate that deep approach to learning and problem-based learning have significant impacts on students’ self-efficacy and employability; self-efficacy has significant impacts on employability and career decision status; employability has significant impact on career decision status; and that self-efficacy and employability play significant mediating roles in the research framework.

Experiential learning is an essential process in the development of core social competencies. Unfortunately, adolescents with autism spectrum disorders often do not possess the prerequisite skillset and motivation to sustain the level of social immersion needed to benefit from this learning process. These persisting social vulnerabilities can limit their long-term relational success and associated quality of life, creating a need for comprehensive social programming. This paper describes a multi-component socialization intervention that simultaneously targets motivational, conceptual, and skill deficits using a hybrid experiential/didactic treatment approach. Evidence of social competence improvements was noted in survey and live conversational measures, indicating that the START program may hold promise as a method for improving the social success of participating adolescents with ASD.

BackgroundProblem-Based Learning (PBL) is an instructional method of hands-on, active learning centered on investigating and resolving messy, real-world problems. This study aims to systematically analyze the current status and hotspots of PBL research and provide insights for research in the field.MethodsProblem-based learning-related publications were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection using “Problem-Based Learning”. Annual publications, countries, institutions, authors, journals, references, and keywords in the field were visually analyzed using the R, VOSviewer, and Microsoft Excel 2019 software.ResultsA total of 2,790 articles and reviews were analyzed, with a steady increase in publications in the field of PBL. Overall, the United States was the major contributor to the study of PBL. Van Der Vleuten CPM was the key researcher in this field. Moreover, most of the publications were published in Medical Education. Keyword analysis showed that current research hotspots focus on the extensions of PBL teaching mode, application of PBL teaching method, and reform of PBL.ConclusionResearch on PBL is flourishing. Cooperation and exchange between countries and institutions should be strengthened in the future. These findings will provide a better understanding of the state of PBL research and inform future research ideas.

This study proposes a push notification system that combines digital real-time learning, roll-call, and feedback collection functions. With the gradually flourishing online real-time learning systems, this research further builds roll-call and feedback functions for students to enhance concentration and provide opinions. Additionally, the lecturers can do a roll call irregularly and randomly through the push notification function, avoiding students logging in but away from the keyboard. Lecturers can also send questions to a specific student or invite all students to answer; the replies can show students' learning performance. The system will store each notification in a database and analyse messages automatically to record roll calls. Moreover, the system can record the time and intervals of student feedback, enabling lecturers to check students' attention and learning conditions. Currently, most online digital systems depend on the lecturer to be responsible for the entire system; taking a roll call and asking questions will consume the lecturer's teaching time and strength. The system developed in this article can do roll calls and feedback by push notifications, reducing lecturers' workload. Furthermore, the roll-call and automatic record functions can save the time of paperwork after a course.

Prerequisites are embedded in most STEM curricula. However, the assumption that the content presented in these courses will improve learning in later courses has not been verified. Because a direct comparison of performance between students with and without required prerequisites is logistically difficult to arrange in a randomized fashion, we developed a novel familiarity scale, and used this to determine whether concepts introduced in a prerequisite course improved student learning in a later course (in two biology disciplines). Exam questions in the latter courses were classified into three categories, based on the degree to which the tested concept had been taught in the prerequisite course. If content familiarity mattered, it would be expected that exam scores on topics covered in the prerequisite would be higher than scores on novel topics. We found this to be partially true for "Very Familiar" questions (concepts covered in depth in the prerequisite). However, scores for concepts only briefly discussed in the prerequisite ("Familiar") were indistinguishable from performance on topics that were "Not Familiar" (concepts only taught in the later course). These results imply that merely "covering" topics in a prerequisite course does not result in improved future performance, and that some topics may be able to removed from a course thereby freeing up class time. Our results may therefore support the implementation of student-centered teaching methods such as active learning, as the time-intensive nature of active learning has been cited as a barrier to its adoption. In addition, we propose that our familiarity system could be broadly utilized to aid in the assessment of the effectiveness of prerequisites.

Students’ academic engagement depends on a variety of factors that are related to personal learner characteristics, the teacher, the teaching methodology, peers, and other features in the learning environment. Components that influence academic engagement can be cognitive, metacognitive, affective, social, task-related, communicative, and foreign language-related. Rather than existing in isolated spheres, the factors contributing to an individual’s academic engagement intertwine and overlap. The relationships students cultivate with others are prominent in several of these areas. Positive interpersonal relationships enhance individuals’ enthusiasm for learning (Mercer and Dörnyei, 2020), which benefits sustainable learning success and self-confidence. The relationships between students and teachers and the perceptions students have of their teachers seem to be particularly influential on students’ engagement in academic undertakings. Problem-based learning (PBL), a teaching approach particularly suitable for tertiary education, involves students in authentic problem-solving processes and fosters students’ self-regulation and teamwork. Intensive relationship-building is one of the key characteristics of this student-centered approach (Amerstorfer, 2020). The study reported in this article explores the connection between the academic engagement of 34 students and their perceptions of three instructors in a teacher education program for pre-service English teachers in Austria. An online questionnaire was used to investigate the participants’ perceived academic engagement (effort, dedication, learning success) in a university course that implements PBL as its underlying teaching methodology in comparison to conventional teaching approaches. The study further examines how the students perceived the course instructors’ caring, credibility, communication style, and feedback, which leads to new information about how PBL shapes student-teacher relationships. Due to Covid-19, the otherwise face-to-face course was taught online.

Life skills are personal and social skills that kids and teenagers have to learn them so they can act effective and properly about themselves and other people and the whole community. The aim of present study was studying the effect of problem-based learning on life skills in seventh grade female students. For this purpose, the pre-test and post-test control group was used.24 eligible seventh grade female students were selected through sampling and they placed in two experimental and control group by random (each group contains of 12 students).data were collected by using standard questionnaire life skills. (Saatchi et al.1389). Problem-based learning was done in 8 sessions and every session was about 2 hours. The sessions were weekly and were done on the experimental group. For analyzing the data multivariate covariance was used. The results showed that problem-based learning is effective on life skills such as self-awareness, human relations; inter personal communication, problem solving and decision making, health and mental health, partnership and cooperation, and creative thinking. Higher education policy and talent training are failing to meet the ever-changing expectations of employers and society in Taiwan, resulting in a gap between university education and employment. This study used social cognitive career theory (SCCT) to explore the relationships among self-efficacy, transformational leadership (TL), student employability (SE), and problem-based learning (PBL) in higher education institutions (HEIs). The analysis of 637 undergraduates from 16 Taiwanese HEIs using structural equation modeling (SEM) shows significant positive correlations among self-efficacy, PBL, TL, and SE, with PBL and self-efficacy as key mediators. Based on these findings, the researchers propose feasible suggestions for related issues and future research.

ABSTRACT. Our research analyses in detail significant aspects that are specific to active learning with the purpose of optimizing school performance in primary school. In this respect, the scientific approach follows the current methodological directions the main focus of the specialist’s being the interest in activation and participatory strategies. The work depicts learning aspects in the following subjects: Romanian, Mathematics and Science, following a heuristic approach, a discovery‐ and problem‐based learning, in teaching and in the acquiring of the specific content. The main focus was to observe to what degree the use of these teaching strategies can lead to obtaining superior school results that are quantifiable in National Testing.

Peer Instruction is an active learning method widely used in higher education, whereby students answer a series of questions twice, once before and once after peer discussion. There is an ongoing debate as to whether a collective feedback should be given after the students' initial answer, and if so, how the frequently observed group conformity can be avoided. This study examined whether guiding on the use of this feedback can reduce group conformity and improve learning using an interactive learning environment to administer a new type of quiz using graphics, and delivering collective feedback to the whole class in a novel heatmap format. In the experimental group, the teacher told the students that the answer indicated by the heatmap was not necessarily the correct one; this information was not given to students in the control group. Results revealed that guided students were less likely to adopt the (incorrect) majority answer than the non‐guided students, and consequently, they were more likely to improve their learning by reaching an agreement about the correct answer through discussion with their peers. The scientific study of animal cognition has roots in both experimental psychology and evolutionary biology, with researchers often working in related disciplines such as neuroscience, computing science, or ecology. The interdisciplinary nature of the endeavor is both a strength and a challenge for the field. We begin this review with a brief history of comparative cognition and cognitive ecology, focusing on cognitive processes as a mechanistic link between ethology and behaviorism. We then present a "snapshot" of modern-day undergraduate courses in Canada, the United States of America, and the United Kingdom that focus on animal cognition, highlighting the various course names and host departments. We emphasize the value of keeping (or adding) this subject material within curricula, either as independent courses or as enhanced material in other courses. We also present pedagogical approaches to teaching animal cognition that include techniques in large lecture-based courses and in smaller courses that emphasize hands-on experiential learning. Context: The myth of generalisable thinking skills in medical education is gaining popularity once again. The implications are significant as medical educators decide on how best to use limited resources to prepare trainees for safe medical practice. This myth‐busting critical review cautions against the proliferation of curricular interventions based on the acquisition of generalisable skills. Structure: This paper begins by examining the recent history of general thinking skills, as defined by research in cognitive psychology and medical education. We describe three distinct epochs: (a) the Renaissance, which marked the beginning of cognitive psychology as a discipline in the 1960s and 1970s and was paralleled by educational reforms in medical education focused on problem solving and problem‐based learning; (b) the Enlightenment, when an accumulation of evidence in psychology and in medical education cast doubt on the assumption of general reasoning or problem‐solving skill and shifted the focus to consideration of the role of knowledge in expert clinical performance; and (c) the Counter‐Enlightenment, in the current time, when the notion of general thinking skills has reappeared under different guises, but the fundamental problems related to lack of generality of skills and centrality of knowledge remain. Conclusions: The myth of general thinking skills persists, despite the lack of evidence. Progress in medical education is more likely to arise from devising strategies to improve the breadth and depth of experiential knowledge. It's the holy grail of health professional education: teaching people to be good problem solvers. Unfortunately, the authors of this article offer compelling argument to debunk the myth of general thinking skills using evidence from cognitive psychology and medical education research. We have now reached the genomics era within medicine; genomics is being used to personalise treatment, make diagnoses, prognoses, and predict adverse outcomes resulting from treatment with certain drugs. Genomic data is now abundant in healthcare, and the newly created profession of clinical bioinformaticians are responsible for its analysis. In the United Kingdom, clinical bioinformaticians are trained within a 3-year programme, integrating a work-based placement with a part-time Master’s degree. As this profession is still developing, trainees can feel isolated from their peers whom are located in other hospitals and can find it difficult to gain the mentorship that they require to complete their training. Building strong networks or communities of practice (CoPs) and allowing sharing of knowledge and experiences is one solution to addressing this isolation. Within the Master’s delivered at the University of Manchester, we have integrated group-centred problem-based learning (PBL) using real clinical case studies worked on during each course unit. This approach is combined with a flipped style of teaching providing access to online content in our Virtual Learning Environment before the course. The face-to-face teaching is used to focus on the application of the students’ knowledge to clinical case studies. In this study, we conducted semistructured interviews with 8 students, spanning 3 cohorts of students. We evaluated the effectiveness of this style of teaching and whether it had contributed to the formation of CoPs between our students. Our findings demonstrated that this style of teaching was preferred by our students to a more traditional lecture-based format and that the problem-based learning approach enabled the formation of CoPs within these cohorts. These CoPs are valuable in the development of this new profession and assist with the production of new guidelines and policies that are helping to professionalise this new group of healthcare scientists. This paper reports on qualitative research investigating the advice giving behaviours of social work students. Second-year students, who were enrolled in an interpersonal communication skills course, were required to undertake an 'advice-giving audit' exercise across 6 days, with the aim of strengthening their awareness of the interactive nature of advice giving. Students then wrote a diary entry about the frequency of their everyday advice giving behaviour, its intent and reception. Nineteen students provided these reflections for analysis. Findings included three themes pertaining to advice-giving: (i) Giving advice as a natural, comfortable and unconscious way of communicating; (ii) Power and position influences advice dissemination, and (iii) Withholding advice opens, deepens and confuses norms of communication. A fourth theme pertained to the insights that students reported from engaging with the exercise. These findings illustrate the complex interactional process associated with professional advice giving. The research also suggests that experiential activities, which are conducted outside of the classroom, have significant potential to promote the critical examination of embedded communicative practices. In order to ensure long-term retention of information students must move from relying on surface-level approaches that are seemingly effective in the short-term to “building in” so called “desirable difficulties,” with the aim of achieving understanding and long-term retention of the subject matter. But how can this level of self-regulation be achieved by students when learning? Traditionally, research on learning strategy use is performed using self-report questionnaires. As this method is accompanied by several drawbacks, we chose a qualitative, in-depth approach to inquire about students' strategies and to investigate how students successfully self-regulate their learning. In order to paint a picture of effective learning strategy use, focus groups were organized in which previously identified, effectively self-regulating students (N = 26) were asked to explain how they approach their learning. Using a constructivist grounded theory methodology, a model was constructed describing how effective strategy users manage their learning. In this model, students are driven by a personal learning goal, adopting a predominantly qualitative, or quantitative approach to learning. While learning, students are continually engaged in active processing and self-monitoring. This process is guided by a constant balancing between adhering to established study habits, while maintaining a sufficient degree of flexibility to adapt to changes in the learning environment, assessment demands, and time limitations. Indeed, students reported using several strategies, some of which are traditionally regarded as “ineffective” (highlighting, rereading etc.). However, they used them in a way that fit their learning situation. Implications are discussed for the incorporation of desirable difficulties in higher education.
