The tripartite model of the therapy relationship, which includes the working alliance, real relationship, and transference-countertransference configuration, has been a useful way to conceptualize the complexity of the connection between a therapist and a client. However, little research has focused on the interrelationships between these three components over time. This study sought to replicate the findings of Bhatia and Gelso (2018) by examining the between-person relationships among each of the three elements averaged across all sessions. Additionally, we extended earlier work by examining the within-person relationship between the working alliance, the real relationship, and transference-countertransference with themselves as well as with each of the other elements across sessions. Using 5,931 sessions across 142 clients and 36 therapists, we examined time-ordered associations among the cocreated working alliance, cocreated real relationship, and the therapist-rated transference-countertransference configuration using latent variable dynamic structural equation modeling. Results replicated the findings of Bhatia and Gelso (2018), demonstrating that in one session, the working alliance and the real relationship were positively related, and both the working alliance and the real relationship were negatively related to the transference-countertransference configuration. Regarding the interrelations over time, the findings revealed that the working alliance in the previous session had a significant and positive relationship with real relationship in the current session, and the real relationship in the previous session was related to reduced transference-countertransference in the current session. A growing body of research has demonstrated the importance of therapists' multicultural orientation (MCO), namely, their cultural humility (CH), cultural comfort, and cultural missed opportunities, on treatment processes and outcomes (Davis et al., 2018). However, to date, few research has attempted to identify client factors that may moderate the relationship between therapists' MCO and therapeutic processes and outcomes. Informed by Yakushko et al.'s (2009) identity salience model, this study seeks to advance the MCO literature by examining the saliency of clients' cultural identities, therapists' MCO, and improvement in therapy. Data for this study consisted of 193 individuals who had received at least five sessions of psychotherapy in the last 6 months and responded to an online survey about their experience in therapy. Moderated polynomial regression and response surface analysis was used to examine if the relationship between therapists' MCO and clients' perceived improvement in psychotherapy differed as a function of the salience of clients' first and second most important cultural identities. The results indicated that when clients report only one highly salient cultural identity and perceive their therapist high in cultural humility, they report high levels of improvement. In contrast, when clients reported two highly salient identities, cultural humility and improvement in therapy were not significantly related. This study investigated how client working alliance changed after transferring from one therapist to another: (a) When pre- and post-transfer therapists' attachment anxiety/avoidance were congruently higher or lower and (b) when the pretransfer therapists' attachment anxiety/avoidance were more or less discrepant from the posttransfer therapists. A Tau- U analysis and a multilevel polynomial regression and response surface analysis were used to analyze longitudinal data about 23 transferred clients in open-ended psychodynamic psychotherapy with doctoral-level therapist trainees ( n = 29). When first and second therapists' attachment anxiety/avoidance levels were congruent, the higher the two therapists' attachment anxiety and avoidance levels were, the greater was the decrement in clients' ratings of working alliance after transfers. When first and second therapists' attachment anxiety/avoidance levels were discrepant from each other, the more the first and second therapists' attachment were different from each other in terms of anxiety, the greater decrement in clients' ratings of working alliance there was after transfers. Meanwhile, the more the two therapists' attachment avoidance levels were different from each other, the less decrement in clients' ratings of working alliance there was after transfers. Therefore, the attachment orientations of the pre- and post-transfer therapists combined to influence client working alliance after transfers. In the present study, we examined whether clients' perceptions of similarity to their therapists in terms of the Big Five personality traits were associated with the real relationship and, indirectly through the real relationship, to treatment progress. Data collected through an online crowdsource platform from 212 adult clients in individual psychotherapy were analyzed using polynomial regression and response surface analysis. Results indicated that clients who perceived greater similarity to their therapists at higher (vs. lower) levels of Conscientiousness and Openness to Experience reported stronger real relationships, as did clients who perceived greater similarity at lower (vs. higher) levels of Neuroticism. Similarly, clients reported a stronger real relationship when they perceived their therapists as similarly high in Extraversion, but the real relationship decreased slightly when the similarity was perceived at higher (vs. moderate) levels of this trait. Perceived similarity at high and low levels of Agreeableness was also associated with stronger real relationships. There was no evidence of an indirect association between client-perceived similarity and treatment progress via the real relationship. However, clients who perceived greater similarity to their therapists at higher (vs. lower) levels of Openness to Experiences and Conscientiousness reported more progress in treatment. Psychotherapy clients often hold multiple and varied cultural identities, and it is important for therapists to attend to the intersectionality of clients' cultural identities, as well as the saliency of these identities. However, to date, few studies have considered the saliency of clients' multiple identities and how this may impact clients' perceptions of cultural processes in therapy. Therefore, this study utilized polynomial regression and response surface analysis to operationalize and examine congruent and discrepant effects between the saliency of clients' multiple identities and their perceptions of their therapists' cultural humility and cultural missed opportunities. Data for this study consisted of 87 clients who received individual counseling services at either a university counseling center or training clinic at two large universities in the United States. As hypothesized, results indicated significant discrepant effects between the saliency of clients' first and second most important cultural identities and perceptions of their therapists' cultural humility and cultural missed opportunities. Specifically, clients' ratings of their therapist's cultural missed opportunities were lowest when they reported either a) high saliency of cultural identity one and low saliency of cultural identity two, or b) low saliency of cultural identity one and high saliency of cultural identity two. Similarly, clients' ratings of their therapist's cultural humility were highest when they reported either a) high saliency of cultural identity one and low saliency of cultural identity two, or b) low saliency of cultural identity one and high saliency of cultural identity two. We examined the effects of deliberate practice training focused on immediacy (Im) for 7 doctoral student trainees. Training included an 8-hr workshop, 4 individual 50-min sessions, and 4 individual 30-min homework sessions. Qualitative results indicated that trainees found the deliberate practice training to be effective, especially in helping them become aware of and manage emotions and countertransference, which had inhibited them from using Im. In addition, there was a moderate and significant effect of training on the trainee's self-efficacy for using Im, a small and significant effect on therapist-rated working alliance, and no significant effect for client-rated working alliance. Accurate estimations of progress in psychotherapy are necessary for therapists to identify clients at risk of deterioration and potentially reduce premature terminations. This need has resulted in a large body of literature examining the rate and trajectory of change in psychotherapy; however, few studies have tested these dose-response relationships outside of global measures of mental health. Moreover, there is a paucity of research examining the relationship between progress in treatment, treatment length, and premature termination. In this study, we conducted multivariate multilevel analyses to test the good-enough level model across the three domains of the phase model of psychotherapy: psychological symptoms, life functioning, and well-being. In addition, we tested changes in well-being, psychological symptoms, and life functioning, treatment length, and an interaction between treatment progress and treatment length as predictors of premature termination. Data for this study consisted of 438 clients who were treated by 57 therapists within a brief therapy model. Results failed to support the good-enough level model for changes in well-being, psychological symptoms, and life functioning, such that the rate of change across all three scales did not significantly vary as a function of treatment length. However, exploratory analyses revealed a significant interaction effect between changes in well-being, treatment length, and premature termination, indicating that clients who experienced high rates of change in well-being early in treatment were more likely to prematurely terminate treatment. Recent research on attachment in therapy indicates that therapist attachment style is related to therapists' agreement with their clients on the quality of their working alliance (WA; Kivlighan & Marmarosh, 2016). This study builds on these findings by examining how both the therapist's and the client's attachment style may be related to their agreement on the WA. The authors expected that less anxious and less avoidant clients working with less anxious and less avoidant therapists would have higher WA agreement. Using hierarchical linear modeling, they analyzed archival session data from 158 clients and 27 therapists at a community clinic. In terms of overall level agreement (averaged across sessions), therapists and clients significantly disagreed on their WA ratings, with therapists rating the WA lower than did their clients; but there was more therapist-client level-agreement when therapists had relatively less attachment avoidance. In terms of (linear) WA agreement from session to session, the authors found no main effects for either therapist or client attachment style alone, but several significant interactions between therapist and client attachment styles. Session-to-session agreement on the WA was higher when clients and therapist had "matching" (both higher or both lower in attachment anxiety or attachment avoidance) or "complementary" (one higher in attachment avoidance, the other lower in attachment anxiety, or one higher in attachment anxiety, the other lower in attachment avoidance) attachment styles than when styles were noncomplementary. We investigated how concealment and disclosure of secrets, two related but distinct processes, unfolded over the course of open-ended therapy for 39 clients and 9 therapists, using hierarchical linear modeling to identify longitudinal patterns and investigate relationships with working alliance and session quality. Results indicated that over the course of therapy, 85% of clients disclosed at least one secret and 41% concealed at least one secret, with 18% of sessions including a disclosure and 4% of sessions including concealment. Over time, clients were less likely to disclose secrets, and the secrets they chose to conceal were rated as less significant. Clients rated the working alliance lower after sessions when they disclosed secrets versus when they did not disclose, although the working alliance was not rated as poorly when the disclosed secrets were viewed as significant. Clients rated session quality higher after sessions when they disclosed secrets versus when they did not disclose, particularly when they disclosed preoccupying secrets. Women and Men of Color experience racism in unique and complex ways, just as White Women and Women of Color experience unique forms of sexism (i.e., gendered racism). Traditional analyses of therapists' cultural competence, broadly defined, have yet to examine the effect of intersectionality on the processes and outcomes of psychotherapy. Although previous research suggests that therapists differ in their effectiveness with Racial-Ethnic Minority (REM) clients, no study has examined therapist effects in terms of the intersectionality of clients' race-ethnicity and gender. This study applied an intersectionality framework to test therapist effects due to clients' race-ethnicity and gender. Data for this study consisted of 415 clients treated by 16 therapists. Results indicated that therapists differed in their ability to produce changes in symptom-defined psychological distress as a function of clients' intersecting identities of race-ethnicity and gender. Although writing about the real relationship has existed from the beginnings of the "talking cure," it is only in recent years that empirical research has focused on this phenomenon. The real relationship is the personal relationship between patient and therapist marked by the extent to which each is genuine with the other and perceives/experiences the other in ways that are realistic. The strength of the real relationship is determined by both the extent to which it exists and the degree to which it is positive or favorable. In this article, a meta-analysis is presented on the association between the strength of the real relationship and the outcome of psychotherapy. Summed across 16 studies, this meta-analysis revealed a moderate association with outcome (r = .38, 95% confidence interval [.30, .44], p < .001, d = 0.80, N = 1.502). This real relationship-outcome association was independent of the type of outcome studied (treatment outcome, treatment progress, and session outcome) and of the source of the measure (whether the client or the therapist rated the real relationship and/or treatment outcome). We also present commonly used measures of the real relationship, limitations of the research, and patient contributions. Objective: To determine how counselors' attachment anxiety and avoidance related to congruence between counselors' and clients' Working alliance (WA) ratings. Congruence strength was defined as the regression coefficient for clients' WA ratings predicting counselors' WA ratings. Directional bias was defined as the difference in level between counselors' and clients' WA ratings., Method: Twenty-seven graduate student counselors completed an attachment measure and they and their 64 clients completed a measure of WA early in therapy. The truth-and-bias analysis was adapted to analyze the data., Results: As hypothesized counselors' WA ratings were significantly and positively related to clients' WA ratings. Also as hypothesized, counselors' WA ratings were significantly lower than their clients' WA ratings (directional bias). Increasing counselor attachment anxiety was related to increasing negative directional bias; as counselors' attachment anxiety increased the difference between counselors and clients WA ratings became more negative. There was a significant interaction between counselor attachment anxiety and congruence strength in predicting counselor WA ratings. There was a stronger relationship between client WA ratings and counselor WA ratings for counselors low versus high in attachment anxiety., Conclusion: Counselors' attachment anxiety is realted to their ability to accurately percieve their clients' WA.

The development and factor analysis of the Adventure Therapy Experience Scale (ATES) is the first attempt found in the literature to empirically and quantitatively identify therapeutic factors theorized to affect change in the adventure therapy experience (Russell & Gillis, 2017). This study utilizes the ATES to explore how its inherent factors may impact treatment outcome utilizing a routine outcome monitoring process to empirically test how these factors may contribute to treatment outcome over time. The sample of 168 males 21.5 years of age completed an average of 79.6 days in the 90-day adventure-based substance use disorder residential treatment program. In the model, adventure-based experiences are a primary treatment tool. For outcome monitoring, all clients were administered the Outcome Questionnaire (OQ-45.2) at intake, every 2 weeks, and at discharge. In addition, clients were administered the 18-item ATES every 2 weeks. The ATES contains 2 items measuring how helpful the adventure experience was as well as how mindful they were of their treatment process during the experience. Clients also answer 16 Likert items measuring responses on 4 subscales: group adventure, nature, challenge, and reflection. Results reveal that clients, on average, improved in their psycho-social functioning as measured by the OQ 45.2. Weeks with higher helpfulness, mindfulness, and group adventure scores than the client's average helpfulness, mindfulness, and group adventure score, had greater decreases in OQ scores than weeks with lower helpfulness, mindfulness, and group adventure scores. Clients with higher aggregate helpfulness and group adventure scores, across all treatment weeks, had greater decreases in OQ scores than clients with lower aggregate helpfulness and group adventure scores. We examined how congruence and discrepancy in clients' and therapists' ratings of the working alliance (WA) and real relationship (RR) were related to client-rated session quality (SES; Session Evaluation Scale). Ratings for 2517 sessions of 144 clients and 23 therapists were partitioned into therapist-level, client-level, and session-level components and then analyzed using multilevel, polynomial regression and response surface analysis. For both clients and therapists, at all levels of analysis (except the therapist level for therapist ratings), SES was highest when combined WA and RR ratings were high, and lowest when combined ratings were low. For client ratings, discrepancy between WA and RR, at the client and session levels, was associated with greater session quality. Some clients perceived greater session quality when, across all sessions, WA was stronger than RR and other clients perceived greater session quality when RR was stronger than WA. Within clients, session quality was highest when some sessions had a stronger WA than RR whereas other sessions had a stronger RR than WA. These findings are compatible with a responsiveness framework, therapists varied the balance of WA and RR to suit situational demands or needs of different clients. When therapists rated WA and RR the opposite pattern of results emerged; clients perceived greater session quality when therapists' WA and RR ratings, for a session were high and consistent (i.e., no discrepancy between WA and RR). We used West and Kenny's (2011) Truth-and-Bias (T&B) model to examine how accurately group therapists' judge their group members' alliances, and the effects of therapist-patient congruence in alliance ratings on patient outcomes. Were considered: (a) directional bias - therapists' tendency to over- or underrate their clients' alliances, (b) truth strength - clients' alliance ratings, and (c) bias strength - therapists' tendency to conflate their alliance ratings for a specific group member with the average alliance ratings for the other members of the group. There were 118 obese adult patients with binge-eating disorder that were treated by 8 therapists with Emotionally Focused Group Therapy. Outcomes were operationalized as pre- to postchanges in: health-related quality of life, binge eating, and psychological distress. Patients' and therapists' working alliance were assessed after the 2nd, 10th, and last (20th) group therapy sessions. (a) There was no significant congruence between group therapists' and members' ratings of alliance; (b) therapists' ratings of an individual group member's alliance were significantly related to therapists' ratings of the other group members' alliance in early sessions but unrelated in later sessions; and (c) the relationship between therapists' alliance ratings and bias strength was weaker when patient binge eating outcomes improved. Group therapists adopted a "better safe than sorry" strategy by underestimating the strength of their group members' alliances. Therapists had a tendency to judge each group member's individual alliance based on the aggregated alliance of the other group members. Although evidence suggests that the benefits of psychodynamic treatments are sustained over time, presently it is unclear whether these sustained benefits are superior to non-psychodynamic treatments. Additionally, the extant literature comparing the sustained benefits of psychodynamic treatments compared to alternative treatments is limited with methodological shortcomings. The purpose of the current study was to conduct a rigorous test of the growth of the benefits of psychodynamic treatments relative to alternative treatments across distinct domains of change (i.e., all outcome measures, targeted outcome measures, non-targeted outcome measures, and personality outcome measures). To do so, the study employed strict inclusion criteria to identify randomized clinical trials that directly compared at least one bona fide psychodynamic treatment and one bona fide non-psychodynamic treatment. Hierarchical linear modeling (Raudenbush, Bryk, Cheong, Congdon, & du Toit, 2011) was used to longitudinally model the impact of psychodynamic treatments compared to non-psychodynamic treatments at post-treatment and to compare the growth (i.e., slope) of effects beyond treatment completion. Findings from the present meta-analysis indicated that psychodynamic treatments and non-psychodynamic treatments were equally efficacious at post-treatment and at follow-up for combined outcomes (k=20), targeted outcomes (k=19), non-targeted outcomes (k=17), and personality outcomes (k=6). This study used the Actor Partner Interdependence Model (APIM; Kenny & Cook, 1999) to examine the associations of client- and therapist-rated real relationship (RR) and session quality over time. Eighty-seven clients and their therapists (n = 25) completed RR and session quality measures after every session of brief therapy. Therapists' current session quality ratings were significantly related to all of the following: session number (b = .04), their session quality rating of the previous session (b = .24), their RR in the previous session (b = 1.091), their client's RR in the previous session (b = .17), and interactions between their own and their clients' RR and session number (b = -.16 and β = -.04, respectively). Clients' ratings of current session quality were significantly related to only their own RR in the previous session (b = .47). The purpose of this study was to test the notion that complementary attachments are best for achieving a secure base in psychotherapy. Specifically, we predicted third to fifth session alliance from client- and therapist-rated attachment style interactions. Using a combined sample of 46 therapy dyads from a community mental health clinic and university counseling center, the client- and therapist-perceived therapy alliance, attachment anxiety, and attachment avoidance were examined at the beginning of therapy. The results of an Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM; Kenny & Cook, 1999, Partner effects in relationship research: Conceptual issues, analytic difficulties, and illustrations. Personal Relationships, 6, 433-448.) indicated that there was no direct effect of either client or therapist attachment style on therapist or client early ratings of the alliance. One significant interaction emerged and indicated that client-perceived alliance was influenced by therapist and client attachment anxiety. The client-perceived early alliance was higher when more anxious therapists worked with clients with decreasing anxiety. The client early alliance was higher when less anxious therapists worked with clients with increasing anxiety. The findings partially support the notion that different attachment configurations between the therapist and client facilitate greater alliance, but this was the case only when assessing client-perceived early alliance and only with regards to the dimension of attachment anxiety. There were no significant main effects or interactions when exploring therapist-perceived alliance. I describe three clinical processes: (a) bringing the discussion into the here-and-now; (b) making impact disclosures; and (c) creating a corrective emotional experience, derived from interpersonal theory, that occurs in most of my individual and group therapy sessions. For each of these clinical processes, I provide: (a) the theoretical principals that support the clinical process, (b) clinical descriptions and dialogue that demonstrate the process, and (c) a review of some of the research examining the clinical process. We review the articles by Bakali, Wilberg, Klungsøyr, and Lorentzen (this issue) and Bonsaksen, Borge, and Hoffart (this issue) that examine different aspects of group Climate using the Group Climate Questionnaire. Both articles build on the previous group climate literature and both provide important new insights into the relationship between individual group members' perceptions of group climate and their treatment outcome (Bonsaksen et al., 2013) and the development of group climate across time. Our comments focus on how these two areas of research can be extended. Specifically, we recommend that group development researchers use new statistical techniques that describe patterns in how group climate changes across time. In addition, we encourage researchers examining the relationship between group climate and outcome to use the Actor Partner Interdependence Model to include other groups members' perceptions of group climate as a predictor of an individual group member's treatment outcome.

Despite the evidence suggesting that all treatments intended to be therapeutic are equally efficacious, the conjecture that one form of treatment, namely cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), is superior to all other treatment persists. The purpose of the current study was to (a) reanalyze the clinical trials from an earlier meta-analysis that compared CBT to 'other therapies' for depression and anxiety (viz., Tolin, 2010) and (b) conduct a methodologically rigorous and comprehensive meta-analysis to determine the relative efficacy of CBT and bona fide non-CBT treatments for adult anxiety disorders. Although the reanalysis was consistent with the earlier meta-analysis' findings of small to medium effect sizes for disorder-specific symptom measures, the reanalysis revealed no evidence for the superiority of CBT for depression and anxiety for outcomes that were not disorder-specific. Following the reanalysis, a comprehensive anxiety meta-analysis that utilized a survey of 91 CBT experts from the Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapists (ABCT) to consensually identify CBT treatments was conducted. Thirteen clinical trials met the inclusion criteria. There were no differences between CBT treatments and bona fide non-CBT treatments across disorder-specific and non-disorder specific symptom measures. These analyses, in combination with previous meta-analytic findings, fail to provide corroborative evidence for the conjecture that CBT is superior to bona fide non-CBT treatments., (Published by Elsevier Ltd.)

Two studies explored how counselor and client agreement on the therapy alliance, at the beginning of treatment, influenced early session evaluations and symptom change. Unlike prior studies that operationalized alliance convergence as either a profile similarity correlation or a difference score, the present study used polynomial regression and response surface analysis to examine agreement. Study 1 explored the impact of working alliance congruence on session depth and smoothness at the 3rd session of treatment with 36 client-counselor dyads. Results revealed that session smoothness was greater when clients' and therapists' perceptions of the working alliance were in agreement and high compared with when they were in agreement and low. In addition, clients rated sessions less smooth when their ratings of the alliance were lower than their therapists' ratings of the alliance, and they rated sessions as more smooth when their ratings of the alliance were higher than their therapists' ratings of the alliance. The authors did not find a significant relationship with session depth. In Study 2, the authors explored the impact of working alliance congruence, at the 3rd session of therapy, on symptom change for 63 client-counselor dyads. Results revealed that as the therapist and client have more positive agreement on the perceived alliance at the beginning of the treatment, there is greater symptom change. The authors also found that the consequences of alliance disagreement are the same regardless of who rated the alliance higher than the other. Implications and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the relative efficacy of evidence-based treatments (EBTs) versus treatment-as-usual (TAU) in routine care for anxiety and depression in adults., Method: A computerized search of studies that directly compared an EBT with a TAU was conducted. Meta-analytic methods were used to estimate effectiveness of EBTs relative to TAU and to model how various confounding variables impacted the results of this comparative research., Results: A total of 14 studies were included in the final meta-analysis. There was significant heterogeneity in the TAU conditions, which ranged from unknown and/or minimal mental health treatment to psychotherapeutic interventions provided by trained professionals. Although the effect for EBT vs. TAU was significantly greater than zero, the effect for EBT vs. TAUs that were psychotherapeutic interventions was not statistically different from zero., Conclusions: Heterogeneity of TAU conditions in this meta-analysis highlight the importance of clarifying the research questions being asked when investigating and drawing conclusions from EBT-TAU comparisons. Researchers need to clarify if they are comparing an EBT to psychotherapeutic services in routine care or to minimal mental health services. Extant research on EBT versus TAU reveals that there is insufficient evidence to recommend the transportation of EBTs for anxiety and depression to routine care, particularly when the routine care involves psychotherapeutic services., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Volunteer clients (N = 96) evaluated sessions conducted by prepracticum trainees prior to and after the trainees received instruction in interpersonal-psychodynamic therapy. The relationship between changes in therapeutic style, measured by intension use, and changes in volunteer clients' session evaluations were examined with growth curve analyses. After training, trainees increased their focus on client emotions and on the therapeutic relationship and decreased their verbal activity. Increased session smoothness was related to decreases in trainee verbal activity and to increases in trainee flexibility. Increases in volunteer clients' perceptions of trainee expertness, attractiveness, and trustworthiness were related to trainees' increased focus on client emotions and increased focus on the therapeutic relationship and to decreases in confrontation., (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved.)

In this analogue study, therapists identified the core conflictual relationship themes (CCRT; wishes, responses of others, and responses of self) in relationship episodes taken from multiple clients in Luborsky and Crits-Christoph (1998). Judges identified the therapists' own CCRT using the Relationship Anecdotes Paradigm (Luborsky, 1990). Profile similarity analysis was used to examine the relationship between therapists' CCRT and the CCRT that they identified. Projection was identified by a significant relationship between the therapists' own CCRT pattern and the CCRT pattern that they rated in relationship episodes from Luborsky and Crits-Christoph, especially for wishes. The therapists' tendency to project was moderated by therapeutic experience and receipt of personal therapy.

Profile analysis and Pathfinder Network Analysis (Schvaneveldt, 1990) were used to examine changes in procedural knowledge and procedural structural knowledge, respectively, of 32 counselor trainees and to examine convergence in their procedural knowledge and procedural structural knowledge with the procedural knowledge structure of 42 experienced counselors. Procedural knowledge was derived from the pattern and level of intention use (Hill & O'Grady, 1985) in a pre- and posttraining counseling session. Procedural structural knowledge was derived from the co-occurrence of the intentions used in these two counseling sessions. Only counselor trainees' structure of intention use changed from pre- to posttraining, becoming more similar to the structure of intention use of the experienced counselors. At both pre- and posttraining, when trainees' structure of intention use was more similar to that of experienced counselors, their clients rated counseling sessions as smoother (pre- and posttraining) and deeper (posttraining only). The use of knowledge structures as a criterion for assessing the effectiveness of counseling skills training is discussed.
