Background: Populations affected by crises (armed conflict, food insecurity, natural disasters) are poorly covered by demographic surveillance. As such, crisis-wide estimation of population mortality is extremely challenging, resulting in a lack of evidence to inform humanitarian response and conflict resolution., Methods: We describe here a 'small-area estimation' method to circumvent these data gaps and quantify both total and excess (i.e. crisis-attributable) death rates and tolls, both overall and for granular geographic (e.g. district) and time (e.g. month) strata. The method is based on analysis of data previously collected by national and humanitarian actors, including ground survey observations of mortality, displacement-adjusted population denominators and datasets of variables that may predict the death rate. We describe the six sequential steps required for the method's implementation and illustrate its recent application in Somalia, South Sudan and northeast Nigeria, based on a generic set of analysis scripts., Results: Descriptive analysis of ground survey data reveals informative patterns, e.g. concerning the contribution of injuries to overall mortality, or household net migration. Despite some data sparsity, for each crisis that we have applied the method to thus far, available predictor data allow the specification of reasonably predictive mixed effects models of crude and under 5 years death rate, validated using cross-validation. Assumptions about values of the predictors in the absence of a crisis provide counterfactual and excess mortality estimates., Conclusions: The method enables retrospective estimation of crisis-attributable mortality with considerable geographic and period stratification, and can therefore contribute to better understanding and historical memorialisation of the public health effects of crises. "Regional and monthly variations in Korean mortality during the period of 1975-1988 were investigated using vital registration data....A clear regional variation in death rates was found, with lower rates in the large cities of Seoul and Pusan and [in] two provinces...." Differences in provincial rates are associated with socioeconomic variables and differences in levels of public health development. Changes in seasonal variations in mortality over time are noted due to the changing pattern of causes of death from the predominance of infectious diseases in the 1970s to chronic and degenerative diseases in the 1980s. An analysis is made of changes in the demographic processes in the countries of Eastern Europe over the period from 1945 to 1990 within both the general regularities and national peculiarities according to the parameters of statics and dynamics of population movement. The positive tendencies in the demographic processes are pointed out, first of all in infant mortality rates and mean expectation of life at birth in Eastern European countries by decades reflecting the peculiarities of changes as compared with developed countries.

"A factor analysis on twenty-six social and economic variables measured in the seventy-eight 'municipios' of [Puerto Rico] is used to build a socio-economic model that reveals regional disparities [in mortality]. Adult and infant mortality rates in the different regions are computed and show that disparities in public health do exist. Oropouche virus has recently caused outbreaks in South America and the Caribbean, expanding into areas to which the virus was previously not endemic. This geographic range expansion, in conjunction with the identification of vertical transmission and reports of deaths, has raised concerns about the broader threat this virus represents to the Americas. We review information on Oropouche virus, factors influencing its spread, transmission risk in the United States, and current status of public health response tools. On the basis of available data, the risk for sustained local transmission in the continental United States is considered low because of differences in vector ecology and in human-vector interactions when compared with Oropouche virus-endemic areas. However, more information is needed about the drivers for the current outbreak to clarify the risk for further expansion of this virus. Timely detection and control of this emerging pathogen should be prioritized to mitigate disease burden and stop its spread. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Elimination of HCV infection as a public health concern by the end of this decade will require a concerted effort in all target populations, including drug‐users in the inner‐city. Several strategies have been proposed to identify, engage and provide HCV‐infected residents with antiviral therapy and maximise treatment and cure achievement. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of a multidisciplinary approach in delivering HCV treatment to people who inject drugs (PWID) within Vancouver's inner city. We have evaluated a novel approach, the Community Pop‐Up Clinic, for its ability to promote access to care and uptake of HCV therapy, with additional analyses of HCV reinfection and opioid‐related mortality. From January 2021 to August 2023, we evaluated 1968 individuals. 620 (31.5%) were found to carry HCV antibodies and of these, 474 (76.5%) were found to be viremic. Treatment engagement has been secured in 387 (81.6%). 326 (84.2%) have started treatment, 60 in the pre‐treatment phase and 1 died of an overdose in pre‐treatment. Of 326, 302 completed treatments, 18 are currently on treatment and 1 died of an overdose. Of 302 who completed treatment, 286 confirmed as cured (SVR 12), 16 are awaiting SVR 4, 2 had documented virologic relapse and 1 was reinfected. Three patients withdrew from treatment. By mITT, the cure rate is 286/288 (99.3%). We documented 2 overdose deaths over 326 PY. The data presented validates multidisciplinary programs such as ours aimed at treating HCV in inner‐cities and highlights societal benefits that could be achieved including lower overdose death rates. Background: Mining occupies a prominent place in Brazil, which, if observed, means that one must work with the contingencies that arise from its activity. Mining disasters, such as those in Mariana and Brumadinho, exemplify the impact on the health system and are models for similar situations, so the study sought to investigate the impact of these disasters on hospital admissions in the Brazilian public health system. Methods: Through segmented regression, we sought to assess possible changes in the variables HAA (authorized hospital admissions), total admission value, and mortality rate in Mariana and Brumadinho. This measurement method allows the researcher to identify changes during the study period. Results: The​​​​​​​ study observed significant changes in the variable mortality rate in the city of Brumadinho. Although the other variables, both in Mariana and Brumadinho, do not present a level of significance compatible with possible effects, we can still say that they present a trend that can be inferred as an effect of the disaster. Conclusions: The mining disaster significantly changed the mortality profile in the city of Brumadinho, with implications for the health system. Background and Aim Methods Results Conclusions The global burden of gallbladder and biliary tract cancer (GBTC) has been on the rise, making it a major public health concern. We aim to comprehensively analyze sex disparities in the temporal trends of GBTC incidence, mortality, and disability‐adjusted life years (DALYs) regionally and globally from 2010 to 2019.Age‐standardized rates of GBTC incidence, death, and DALYs were analyzed utilizing the Global Burden of Disease study 2019.From 2010 to 2019, the estimated annual percent change (APC) of the age‐standardized incidence rates (ASIRs) and age‐standardized disability‐adjusted life years (ASDALYs) due to GBTC globally decreased in both sexes (males, APC: −0.80%; APC: −1.00%) and (females, APC: −0.89%; APC: −0.96%). At the same time, age‐standardized death rates (ASDRs) decreased only in males (APC: −0.82%) and remained stable in females. By regions, ASIRs and ASDR increased in both sexes only in Southeast Asia (SEA) but decreased in the other regions. All regions had decreased ASDALYs except for an increase in ASDALYs for females only in the SEA region (APC: 0.41%), and males have a stable trend.Our study reveals substantial geographic variance in the burden of GBTC, specifically in the SEA region. Background: Harmful algal bloom occurrences have been increasingly reported globally and over time. Exposure to the variety of toxins and co-contaminants that may be present in harmful algal blooms can cause illness and even death. Poison control data is a valuable public health information source that has been used to characterize many types of toxin exposures, including harmful algal blooms. Prior studies have been limited by location and time, and knowledge gaps remain regarding cyanobacteria harmful algal bloom (cyanoHAB) exposure circumstances, and the breadth and severity of associated clinical effect. Methods: The objective of this study was to characterize epidemiologic and clinical features of cyanoHAB exposure cases reported to 55 US poison control centers and available in the National Poison Data System (NPDS). We identified 4260 NPDS cyanoHAB exposure cases reported from 2010 to 2022, including symptomatic exposure cases with and without clinical effects related to the exposure and asymptomatic exposure cases. We assessed demographics; exposure routes, locations, chronicity; clinical effects; and medical outcomes. We calculated case rates annually and 13-year case rates by US geographic division. Results: Over half of cyanoHAB exposure cases were children < 20 years old (n = 2175). Most cyanoHABs exposures occurred in a "public area" (n = 2902, 68.1%); most were acute (≤ 8 h) (n = 3824, 89.8%). Dermal and ingestion routes and gastrointestinal effects predominated. 2% (n = 102) of cases experienced a moderate or major medical outcome; no deaths were reported. National rates increased from 0.4 cases/1 million (1 M) person-years in 2010 to 1.4 cases/1 M person-years in 2022. The Mountain division had the highest 13-year rate (7.8 cases/1 M person-years). Conclusions: CyanoHAB exposure case rates increased 2010–2022, despite a decrease in all-cause exposure cases during the same period. Classical epidemiology relies on incidence, mortality rates, and clinical data from individual testing, which can be challenging for many countries. Therefore, innovative, flexible, cost‐effective, and scalable surveillance techniques are needed. Wastewater‐based epidemiology (WBE) has emerged as a highly powerful tool in this regard. WBE analyses substances excreted in human fluids and faeces that enter the sewer system. This approach provides insights into community health status and lifestyle habits. WBE serves as an early warning system for viral surveillance, detecting the emergence of new pathogens, changes in incidence rates, identifying future trends, studying outbreaks, and informing the performance of action plans. While WBE has long been used to study different viruses such as poliovirus and norovirus, its implementation has surged due to the pandemic caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2. This has led to the establishment of wastewater surveillance programmes at international, national, and community levels, many of which remain operational. Furthermore, WBE is increasingly applied to study other pathogens, including antibiotic resistance bacteria, parasites, fungi, and emerging viruses, with new methodologies being developed. Consequently, the primary focus now is on creating international frameworks to enhance states' preparedness against future health risks. However, there remains considerable work to be done, particularly in integrating the principles of One Health into epidemiological surveillance to acknowledge the interconnectedness of humans, animals, and the environment in pathogen transmission. Thus, a broader approach to analysing the three pillars of One Health must be developed, transitioning from WBE to wastewater and environmental surveillance, and establishing this approach as a routine practice in public health. Background: The costs associated with respiratory illnesses in the French healthcare budget continue to rise. However, pharmaceutical companies and research centres are continuously developing new treatments. Consequently, accepting these treatments, which necessitates the acceptance of the mortality risk associated with their use, represents a significant economic and public health issue. Our study aims to assess this acceptance. Methods: The data were obtained from an online questionnaire completed by 315 respondents located in France during June and July 2019. The standard gamble method was employed to ascertain the acceptability of risk. This method quantifies the 'disutility' of a health state by evaluating the extent to which an individual is willing to accept a specific mortality risk in exchange for avoiding the state. Results: The study demonstrated that individuals, irrespective of their personal characteristics, were willing to accept a treatment with an average mortality risk of less than 19%. The findings revealed discrepancies between individuals' perceptions of mortality and actual risks. Conclusions: In France, it is incumbent upon public decision-makers and research centres to ensure that treatment-related mortality rates remain below 19% so that patients readily accept treatment, irrespective of their personal characteristics. In addition, they should provide further information on the risks associated with treating respiratory diseases to avoid a discrepancy between the mortality risks perceived by individuals and the actual risks. Background: Vibrio cholerae is a primary cause of severe dehydrating diarrhea and remains a serious public health problem in low- and middleincome countries (LMICs) with insufficient water, sanitation, and hygiene. Cholera remains a public health threat the worldwide, mainly in countries with poor access to safe water and sanitation facilities. According to estimates, there are 21,000-143,000 deaths and 1.3-4 million cases of cholera annual. Objective: This study aims to carry out an analysis of the available information on cholera outbreaks in Diyala province, 2022. Patients and Methods: A descriptive study conducted in the department of public health using the data of cases reported from eight sectors in province. The data was collected from the surveillance unit, communicable control division of the public health department in Diyala province, IRAQ in 2022. Results: The total number of confirmed cases of cholera was (n = 139), female (72) 52 % and male (67) 48%, death reported for two of these cases. According to the date of onset, the registration of cases began from July 19 to October 25, 2022. However, the case fatality ratio (CFR) was 1.4%, while the attack rate in the governorate is 7.6 per 100,000 populations during 2022, the highest attack rate in Khanaqin district was (77 cases) 46, while the lowest attack rate in Baldruze, Al-Mansuria, and Al-Khalis districts was (1 case) 0.3,0.6, and 0.8 respectively. The age mean of patients was (38.7 ± 17.14 years) and the occurrence of the disease is more incidence in the age group 30-44 and females more than males. Conclusion: Occurrence Cholera outbreak during year 2022 without confirmed cases recorded since 2015 and the occurrence of cholera cases in governorate is greater during the months of August and September and most of the cases were from Khanaqin district. Road traffic injuries (RTIs) are a pressing public health concern in India, leading to a rise in injury‐related deaths, hospitalizations, and disabilities. India accounts for a significant portion of the world's fatal traffic accidents, with two‐wheelers being involved in the majority of these accidents. The impact of non‐fatal injuries on individuals extends beyond the bodily consequences of the injury and includes both the physical and psychological dimensions of the injury. The literature indicates the need for policy cascades and implementation framework for the prevention of road traffic injury. This study aimed to investigate the post‐RTI experiences and challenges faced by college students who experienced road traffic injury during their college life by using a qualitative research approach in Madurai district, Tamil Nadu, India. The study found that college students who experienced RTIs faced a wide range of physical, emotional, and social difficulties. The study highlights the need for a more comprehensive and holistic approach to RTI prevention that takes into account the complex interplay of individual, environmental, and societal factors that contribute to RTIs. Background: Asthma is a prevalent chronic condition in pediatric populations. The rising incidence, morbidity, and mortality rates associated with asthma have heightened public health concerns. Pediatric asthma imposes a substantial burden on affected children, their families, and the broader community. Effective asthma management encompasses regular monitoring, symptom control, and the prevention of exacerbations. Objectives: The study aimed to document the knowledge, attitudes of parents of children with asthma and to identify the factors associated with parent knowledge and attitude. Method: A study was conducted involving 205 parents of children under five years old with asthma, who attended the Karbala Pediatric Hospital between February 15 and May 15, 2023. A specially designed questionnaire was utilized, comprising three sections: the first section addressed sociodemographic information of both children and parents, the second section evaluated the parents' knowledge, and the third section assessed the parents' attitudes. Responses were scored with one point for correct answers and zero points for incorrect or "I don't know" answers. Statistical analyses, including the Student's T-test, ANOVA, and linear regression, were employed to identify factors associated with parental knowledge. Results: The results indicated that the majority of participants were mothers, with a mean age of 29 years, and the majority of asthmatic children were male (69.3%), with a mean age of 34.4 months. It was found that 48.8% of participants had a poor knowledge score, while 61% had a poor attitude score. Key factors influencing knowledge scores included the family's place of residence, the child's birth order, the duration of the disease, the age at disease onset, the participant's age, and the mother's educational level. Conclusion: Overall, the parents demonstrated limited knowledge and unfavorable attitudes regarding childhood asthma. Background: Dengue, a viral infection transmitted by Aedes species mosquitoes, presents a substantial global public health concern, particularly in tropical regions. In Bangladesh, where dengue prevalence is noteworthy, accurately mapping the distribution of high-risk and low-risk areas and comprehending the clustering of dengue cases throughout the year is essential for the development of effective risk-based prevention and control strategies. Our objective was to identify dengue hotspots and temporal patterns over the years across Bangladesh in the years 2019–2023 excluding year 2020. Methods: A sequential spatial analysis was employed for each year to identify high-risk areas for dengue cases. Choropleth graphs were used to visualize the geographic distribution of dengue incidence rates per million population across the areas. Monthly distribution analysis was performed to identify temporal trends over the year 2022 and 2023. Additionally, the global Moran's I test was used to assess the overall geographical pattern. Subsequently, Anselin local Moran's I test was employed to identified clustering and hotspots of dengue incidences. Results: Dengue cases in Bangladesh exhibited a significant increase from 2019 to 2023 (excluding 2020 data), with a cumulative total of 513,344 reported cases. Dhaka city initially bore substantial burden, accounting for over half (51%) of the 101,354 cases in 2019. The case fatality rate also demonstrated a steadily rise, reaching 0.5% in 2023 with 321,179 cases (a five-fold increase compare to 2022). Interestingly, the proportion of cases in Dhaka decreased from 51% in 2019 to 34% in 2023. Notably, the southeast and central regions of Bangladesh showed the highest dengue rates, persisting throughout the study period. Cases were concentrated in urban regions, with Dhaka City exhibiting the highest caseload in most years, followed by Manikganj in 2023. A distinct temporal shift in dengue transmission was observed in 2023, when the peak incidence occurred three months earlier in July with complete geographic coverage (all the 64 districts) compared to the peak in October 2022 (covering 95%, 61 districts). Positive global autocorrelation analysis revealed spatial dependence, with more stable trends in 2023 compared to previous years. Several districts like, Bagerhat, Barisal, and Faridpur remained persistent hotspots or emerged as new hotspots in 2023. Conversely, districts like Dinajpur, Gaibandha, Nilphamari, Rangpur and Sylhet consistently exhibited low caseloads, categorized as dengue coldspots throughout most of the years. Jhalokati in 2019 and Gopalganj in 2022, both initially classified as low-incidence district surrounded by high-incidence districts, emerged as hotspots in 2023. Conclusion: This study sheds light on the spatiotemporal dynamics of dengue transmission in Bangladesh, particularly by identifying hotspots and clustering patterns. These insights offer valuable information for designing and implementing targeted public health interventions and control strategies. Furthermore, the observed trends highlight the need for adaptable strategies to address the region's evolving nature of dengue transmission effectively. This surge achieved complete geographic coverage, unlike the previous year. Spatial analysis indicated a strong spatial dependence of the disease, with trends stabilizing in 2023 compared to previous years. The study identified persistent hotspots in Bagerhat, Barisal, and Faridpur districts, while Dinajpur, Gaibandha, Nilphamari, Rangpur, and Sylhet districts emerged as coldspots. The southeast and central regions consistently showed high dengue rates. Objective: To provide an update on asthma mortality trends in Brazil and its regions between 2014 and 2021. Methods: This was a retrospective descriptive observational study based on asthma mortality data from the Brazilian National Ministry of Health Mortality Database for the 2014-2021 period. Results: In the study period, there were 18,584 asthma deaths in Brazil, with an annual increase of 2.5%, corresponding to 0.03 deaths/100,000 population (95% CI, 0.01-0.04; p = 0.01). The northeastern region of the country had the highest prevalence of asthma deaths (1.50 deaths/100,000 population), and the southern region showed the greatest variation in the study period (44%). We observed a higher proportion of deaths among females and elderly patients, and when analyzing asthma deaths by place of occurrence, we observed that 28% of all deaths occurred at home. Conclusions: Asthma mortality remains high and shows an increasing trend for the first time in the past decades. Introduction: Poisoning is caused, when a poisonous material is consumed, inhaled, or comes into contact with the skin, eyes, or mucous membranes like the mouth or nose. Poisoning by pesticides has long been considered a serious public health issue. The majority of poisoning cases reported to hospitals involve either an unknown type and quantity of Organophosphorus (OP) poisoning taken by the patient, which makes repeated serum Acetylcholinesterase measurements. Few studies have done the serial Serum Cholinesterase (SChE) tests in the early stages of poisoning. Aim: To evaluate the prognostic value of measuring serial SChE levels in patients with OP poisoning to predict clinical outcomes. Materials and Methods: This cohort study was conducted in the Department of Biochemistry and Therapeutics at Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, Karnataka, India. Medical records of OP poisoning cases admitted during September 2023 and December 2023. A total of 40 patients were included in the study. Detailed demographic and clinical data, along with serial SChE levels at admission, day 2, and day 4, were recorded in the case record forms. Results: The mean age of the patients was 43.38±16.46 years. There was a significant decrease in serum SChE levels from day 1 to day 4 (p<0.0001). Furthermore, the mean SChE levels at admission in patients who survived were significantly higher (p<0.00001) than those in the group that expired. Conclusion: Significantly higher SChE levels were found to be associated with improved clinical outcomes, as indicated by improvements in mechanical ventilation and lower fatality rates after acute OP poisoning. Background: A nanny state imposes restrictions on people's liberty and freedom of action in order to advance their interest and welfare. The extent to which this is desirable, or even ethically acceptable, is debated in the literature. This paper formulates and tests the following hypothesis: the more of a nanny a state has been in the past, the more likely it is that the incumbent government will respond to a new, unknown threat with interventions of a paternalist nature, irrespective of other factors that might contribute to shaping government's response. This hypothesis is then taken to the data using the first wave of COVID-19 as an empirical test. Methods: Data are collected from secondary sources for a sample of 99 countries. Nanny statism is measured by the number of paternalist laws and regulations adopted by a country in the past. The response to COVID is proxied by the time of adoption of control and containment measures and their stringency. The public health outcome is measured by the COVID-19 death toll at the end of June 2020. These variables, plus several controls, are then used to estimate a set of linear and probit regressions and a proportional hazard model of the timing of adoption of control and containment measures. Results: An increase in nanny statism by 0.1 (on a scale from 0 to 10) on average increases the probability of adoption of control and containment measures by 0.077 (i.e. 7.7 percentage points). The central tenement of the hypothesis is therefore consistent with the empirical evidence. The linear and probit regressions also show that there is no evidence of a significant effect of nanny statism on the stringency of the measures adopted. Irrespective of stringency, however, early adoption of control and containment measures is found to reduce the death toll of COVID-19 in the first half of 2020: an increase in nanny statism by 0.1 reduces the COVID death toll by approximately 7%. Conclusions: A tradition of nanny statism potentially leads to a more timely and effective public policy response to a new, unknown crisis. Further tests of the hypothesis should look at the relationship between nanny statism and public health outcomes from natural disasters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Aims: Since 1990, global child and infant mortality rates have typically stabilized or decreased due to improved healthcare, vaccination rollouts, and international funding. However, Afghanistan continues to face the highest child and infant mortality rates globally, with 43 deaths per 1000 live births. This study aims to examine the factors contributing to this high mortality rate and propose interventions to address the issue. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using databases such as Google Scholar and PubMed, focusing on articles published in English within the last 10 years (2013–2023). The search terms included "Child mortality," "Infant mortality," "SIDS," "COVID‐19," and "Afghanistan." Original studies, systematic reviews, case studies, and reports meeting the inclusion criteria were selected for analysis. Additional sources from organizations such as UNICEF, the World Bank Group, WHO, and EMRO were also reviewed. Results: The study findings reveal significant challenges contributing to Afghanistan's high infant and child mortality rates. These challenges include birth defects, preterm birth, malnutrition, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), traumatic injuries, fatal infections, infanticide, and abuse. The ongoing conflict, insecurity, and humanitarian crises further exacerbate the situation, leading to increased child casualties. Despite efforts by international agencies like UNICEF to provide vaccines and maternal education, the infant mortality rate remains high. This paper examines the impact of Medicaid expansions to parents and childless adults on adult mortality. Specifically, we evaluate the long‐run effects of eight state Medicaid expansions from 1994 through 2005 on all‐cause, healthcare‐amenable, non‐healthcare‐amenable, and HIV‐related mortality rates using state‐level data. We utilize the synthetic control method to estimate effects for each treated state separately and the generalized synthetic control method to estimate average effects across all treated states. Using a 5% significance level, we find no evidence that Medicaid expansions affect any of the outcomes in any of the treated states or all of them combined. Moreover, there is no clear pattern in the signs of the estimated treatment effects. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, understanding the spatial and temporal dynamics of the disease is crucial for effective public health interventions. This study aims to analyze COVID-19 data in Peru using a Bayesian spatio-temporal generalized linear model to elucidate mortality patterns and assess the impact of vaccination efforts. Leveraging data from 194 provinces over 651 days, our analysis reveals heterogeneous spatial and temporal patterns in COVID-19 mortality rates. Higher vaccination coverage is associated with reduced mortality rates, emphasizing the importance of vaccination in mitigating the pandemic's impact. Background: Pertussis, a highly contagious, vaccine-preventable respiratory infection caused by Bordetella pertussis, is a leading global public health issue. Ethiopia is currently conducting multiple pertussis outbreak investigations, but there is a lack of comprehensive information on attack rate, case fatality rate, and infection predictors. This study aimed to measure attack rates, case fatality rates, and factors associated with pertussis outbreak. Methods: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of published and unpublished studies on pertussis outbreaks in Ethiopia from 2009 to 2023, using observational study designs, using the guideline Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). The study utilized databases like Science Direct, MEDLINE/PubMed, African Journals Online, Google Scholar and registers. The data were collected using an Excel Spreadsheet and then exported to STATA version 17 for analysis. Subgroup analysis was conducted to identify potential disparities. A random effects model was used to consider heterogeneity among studies. I2-squared test statistics were used to assess heterogeneity. The attack rate, case fatality rate, and odds ratio (OR) were presented using forest plots with a 95% confidence interval. Egger's and Begg's tests were used to evaluate the publication bias. Results: Seven pertussis outbreak investigations with a total of 2824 cases and 18 deaths were incorporated. The pooled attack and case fatality rates were 10.78 (95% CI: 8.1–13.5) per 1000 population and 0.8% (95% CI: 0.01–1.58%), respectively. The highest and lowest attack rates were in Oromia (5.57 per 1000 population and in the Amhara region (2.61 per 1000 population), respectively. Predictor of pertussis outbreak were being unvaccinated [odds ratio (OR) = 3.05, 95% CI: 1.83–4.27] and contact history [OR = 3.44, 95% CI: 1.69–5.19]. Conclusion: Higher and notable variations in attack and case fatality rates were reported. Being unvaccinated and having contact history were the predictors of contracting pertussis disease in Ethiopia. Enhancing routine vaccination and contact tracing efforts should be strengthened. The manuscript emphasizes the disease’s tendency to be under-recognized and the diagnostic challenges it poses, often mimicking other illnesses and leading to frequent misdiagnosis. There is a noted absence of robust diagnostic tools, specific treatments, or vaccines, leaving only supportive care generally available. The zoonotic Nipah virus (NiV) is very lethal and may spread from animals to people. There is yet no known cure or therapy for NiV. The outbreaks are seasonal in Bangladesh, occurring between December and April, with cases reported almost annually. Since the virus was discovered in Bangladesh in 2001, 341 individuals had been affected, and as of February 2024, 242 fatalities have been documented. The case fatality rate (CFR) for NiV has been estimated to range from 40 to 75% in Bangladesh according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). As a result of the high CFR, difficulties in diagnosing the virus, and lack of specific treatments or vaccines for NiV infection, the WHO rates the overall risk at the national level as moderate. Background Global temperatures are on the rise, leading to more frequent and severe heatwaves with associated health risks. Heat-related illnesses (HRIs) are an increasing threat for travellers to hot climate destinations. This study was designed to elucidate the interplay between increasing ambient temperatures, incidence of HRIs and the effectiveness of mitigation strategies during the annual Hajj mass gathering over a 40-year period. Methods An observational study was conducted utilizing historical records spanning four decades of meteorological data, and the rates of heat stroke (HS) and heat exhaustion (HE) during the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. With an annual population exceeding 2 million participants from over 180 countries, the study analysed temporal variations in weather conditions over two distinct Hajj hot cycles and correlated it with the occurrence of HS and HE. The effectiveness of deployed mitigation measures in alleviating health vulnerabilities between the two cycles was also assessed. Results Throughout the study period, average dry and wet bulb temperatures in Mecca escalated by 0.4°C (Mann-Kendall P  < 0.0001) and 0.2°C (Mann-Kendall P  = 0.25) per decade, respectively. Both temperatures were strongly correlated with the incidence of HS and HE (P  < 0.001). Despite the intensifying heat, the mitigation strategies including individual, structural and community measures were associated with a substantial 74.6% reduction in HS cases and a 47.6% decrease in case fatality rate. Conclusion The study underscores the escalating climate-related health risks in Mecca over the study period. The mitigation measures' efficacy in such a globally representative setting emphasizes the findings' generalizability and the importance of refining public health interventions in the face of rising temperatures. Despite broad recognition of the physical inactivity pandemic, little to no progress has been made in the past decade in mitigating the problem. The current analysis builds upon previous research into the drivers of physical inactivity to assess the potential interactions with firearm violence in the United States. We merged county-level data on firearm fatality rates, physical inactivity prevalence, the Social Vulnerability Index, and the American nations regional cultures schematic. Counties with a physical inactivity prevalence currently above the federal government's 2030 goal (ie, ≥21.8%) had a significantly higher firearm fatality rate per 100,000 population. This finding was consistent for both the overall rate and race-based subgroups. The overall White, Hispanic, and Black firearm fatality rates were also significantly higher in the American nations group comprising Greater Appalachia, Deep South, El Norte, New France, and First Nation. Stepwise linear regression analysis revealed that the Social Vulnerability Index, American nations dichotomous grouping, and firearm fatality rate were all retained (P <.001) in predicting physical inactivity prevalence as a continuous variable. In conclusion, the United States faces myriad health and societal challenges. Unhealthy lifestyles and gun violence are two of the leaders. The current analysis in conjunction with previous findings demonstrates that solving these challenges by interacting, create complexity to finding solutions that has not been thoroughly considered. Crisis classifications are integral to COVID-19 press conferences. During the initial outbreak of the pandemic, public health officials classified the crisis status of the community. Depending on the status assigned, the community faced various consequences such as lockdowns and travel restrictions. This study traces Taiwanese health officials' classification practices across temporal orders and participation frameworks. I call this successive link of discursive practices 'crisis classifications in mobility' to elucidate the processes of category production and dissemination. The mobility moved from uncertainty to certainty as health officials and journalists negotiated whether the first death of COVID-19 constituted a sign of community infection or community spread. Officials deployed metadiscourse to render some categories mobile and others immobile. Journalists used metadiscourse to push forward candidate categories and animate conflicting accounts given by local experts and a global superpower. Comparing deaths averted by vaccination campaigns is a crucial public health endeavour. Excess all-cause deaths better reflect the impact of the pandemic than COVID-19 deaths. We used a seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average with exogenous factors model to regress daily all-cause deaths on annual trend, seasonality, and environmental temperature in three Italian regions (Lombardy, Marche and Sicily) from 2015 to 2019. The model was used to forecast excess deaths during the vaccinal period (December 2020–October 2022). We used the prevented fraction to estimate excess deaths observed during the vaccinal campaigns, those which would have occurred without vaccination, and those averted by the campaigns. At the end of the vaccinal period, the Lombardy region proceeded with a more intensive COVID-19 vaccination campaign than other regions (on average, 1.82 doses per resident, versus 1.67 and 1.56 in Marche and Sicily, respectively). A higher prevented fraction of all-cause deaths was consistently found in Lombardy (65% avoided deaths, as opposed to 60% and 58% in Marche and Sicily). Nevertheless, because of a lower excess mortality rate found in Lombardy compared to Marche and Sicily (12, 24 and 23 per 10,000 person-years, respectively), a lower rate of averted deaths was observed (22 avoided deaths per 10,000 person-years, versus 36 and 32 in Marche and Sicily). In Lombardy, early and full implementation of adult COVID-19 vaccination was associated with the largest reduction in all-cause deaths compared to Marche and Sicily. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COVID-19 surveillance across the United States is essential to tracking and mitigating the pandemic, but data representing cases and deaths may be impacted by attribute, spatial, and temporal uncertainties. COVID-19 case and death data are essential to understanding the pandemic and serve as key inputs for prediction models that inform policy-decisions; consistent information across datasets is critical to ensuring coherent findings. We implement an exploratory data analytic approach to characterize, synthesize, and visualize spatial-temporal dimensions of uncertainty across commonly used datasets for case and death metrics (Johns Hopkins University, the New York Times, USAFacts, and 1Point3Acres). We scrutinize data consistency to assess where and when disagreements occur, potentially indicating underlying uncertainty. We observe differences in cumulative case and death rates to highlight discrepancies and identify spatial patterns. Data are assessed using pairwise agreement (Cohen's kappa) and agreement across all datasets (Fleiss' kappa) to summarize changes over time. Findings suggest highest agreements between CDC, JHU, and NYT datasets. We find nine discrete type-components of information uncertainty for COVID-19 datasets reflecting various complex processes. Understanding processes and indicators of uncertainty in COVID-19 data reporting is especially relevant to public health professionals and policymakers to accurately understand and communicate information about the pandemic. Environmental stress represents an important burden on health and leads to a considerable number of diseases, hospitalisations, and excess mortality. Our study encompasses a representative sample size drawn from the Belgian population in 2016 (n = 11.26 million, with a focus on n = 11.15 million individuals). The analysis is conducted at the geographical level of statistical sectors, comprising a total of n = 19,794 sectors, with a subset of n = 18,681 sectors considered in the investigation. We integrated multiple parameters at the finest spatial level and constructed three categories of environmental stress through clustering: air pollution, noise stress and stress related to specific land-use types. We observed identifiable patterns in the spatial distribution of stressors within each cluster category. We assessed the relationship between age-standardized all-cause mortality rates (ASMR) and environmental stressors. Our research found that especially very high air pollution values in areas where traffic is the dominant local component of air pollution (ASMR + 14,8%, 95% CI: 10,4 – 19,4%) and presence of industrial land (ASMR + 14,7%, 95% CI: 9,4 – 20,2%) in the neighbourhood are associated with an increased ASMR. Cumulative exposure to multiple sources of unfavourable environmental stress (simultaneously high air pollution, high noise, presence of industrial land or proximity of primary/secondary roads and lack of green space) is associated with an increase in ASMR (ASMR + 26,9%, 95% CI: 17,1 – 36,5%). Canada has been experiencing a prolonged public health‐crisis of high rates of overdose deaths caused by exceptionally potent/toxic, illicit opioid use. While many key features of this drug death epidemic are well‐documented, several idiosyncratic aspects with relevance for public health‐oriented interventions are not adequately recognised. These include: (i) the discrepant opioid patterns pan‐Canada, with large majorities of opioid deaths caused by illicit fentanyl drugs in Western, but not Eastern regions where prescription‐type opioid prevail; (ii) the environments of overdose deaths, where vast majorities occur in 'residential' or other shelter‐type settings, presenting barriers for emergency interventions rather than health protection; and (iii) shifting drug use modes, where now majorities of overdose deaths are associated with drug 'inhalation' (instead of 'injection') in contexts of potent/toxic drug supply. Introduction: neuromeningeal tuberculosis (NMT) is a significant public health challenge in Morocco because of its acute severity and high mortality rates. This study aims to comprehensively evaluate the epidemiological, clinical, therapeutic, and disease progression characteristics of NMT in the Kenitra province. Methods: a retrospective analysis was conducted on the medical records of patients diagnosed with NMT at the Diagnostic Center of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases in Kenitra from 2014 to 2017. Results: among the 33 identified NMT cases, predominantly males (57.6%) were affected, with an age range of 4-76 years and a median age of 25 years. Extrapulmonary manifestations were prevalent, constituting 78.8% (n=26) of all cases, with meningeal localization in 45.5% (n=15) of confirmed cases. Furthermore, 9.1% (n=3) of cases were associated with unconfirmed cerebral tuberculosis (TB), and 12% (n=4) exhibited miliary TB. Familial transmission and comorbidities were identified as significant factors in disease progression. More than half of the patients received standardized antibacillary treatment during hospitalization, which lasted between 9 and 12 months. Treatment outcomes were generally positive (73%), but a 12% case fatality rate and 15% loss to follow-up were observed. Conclusion: this study highlights the complex clinical and public health challenges posed by NMT in Morocco. It emphasizes the need for improved health strategies that not only increase public awareness but also enhance the accessibility and quality of diagnostic services and treatment options. Background: This study describes the deaths of individuals in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention between FY2021-2023, updating a report from FY2018-2020, which identified an increased death rate amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Data was extracted from death reports published online by ICE. Causes of deaths were recorded, and death rates per 100,000 admissions were calculated using population statistics reported by ICE. Reports of individuals released from ICE custody just prior to death were also identified and described. Results: There were 12 deaths reported from FY2021-2023, compared to 38 deaths from FY2018-2020. The death rate per 100,000 admissions in ICE detention was 3.251 in FY2021, 0.939 in FY2022, and 1.457 in FY2023, compared with a pandemic-era high of 10.833 in FY2020. Suicide caused 1 of 12 (8.3%) deaths in FY2021-2023 compared with 9 of 38 (23.7%) deaths in FY2018-2020. COVID-19 was contributory in 3 of 11 (25%) medical deaths in FY2021-2023, compared with 8 of 11 (72.7%) in the COVID-era months of FY2020 (p = 0.030). Overall, 4 of 11 (36.3%) medical deaths in FY2021-2023 resulted from cardiac arrest in detention facilities, compared with 6 of 29 (20.3%) in FY2018-2020. Three deaths of hospitalized individuals released from ICE custody with grave prognoses were identified. Conclusions: The death rate among individuals in ICE custody decreased in FY2021-2023, which may be explained in part by the release of vulnerable individuals following recent federal legal determinations (e.g., Fraihat v. ICE). Identification of medically complex individuals released from ICE custody just prior to death and not reported by ICE indicates that reported deaths underestimate total deaths associated with ICE detention. Introduction: The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has been a public health concern since 2019. Multiple strategies have been implemented to flatten the curve of cases, including isolating active cases, contact tracing, quarantines, lockdowns, hand hygiene, face mask usage, and sanitisation. Vaccination has been used as a tool to reduce morbidity and mortality due to COVID-19. Aim: To analyse the impact of COVID-19 vaccines on mortality rates among COVID-19 patients, with a secondary objective of studying the association between age, time since vaccination, and mortality rates. Materials and Methods: The present cohort study was conducted in the Department of Forsenic Medicine at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Nagpur, Maharashtra,India, with a sample size of 60 cases, out of which 30 were included. Data was collected over a six month period from January 1, 2022, to June 30, 2022. The study included adult COVID-19 patients who were admitted to AIIMS Nagpur and subsequently died. Data on vaccine type, dose, and time since vaccination were also collected. Results: The mean age of patients was 53 years. Of the patients, 63.3% (n=57) were males and 36.6% (n=33) were females. Among the patients, 60% were vaccinated, while 40% were unvaccinated. Among the vaccinated patients, 14.8% received Covaxin, while 85.1% received Covishield. Regarding the vaccination dosage, 9.2% of the patients received a single dose, while 90.7% received two doses. All the patients who survived COVID-19 had been vaccinated for more than one month. Conclusion: Vaccination resulted in a 93.1% reduction in the odds of death among vaccinated patients. Among the unvaccinated patients, 80% died due to COVID-19. After adjusting for age and co-morbidities, vaccination was found to be independently associated with a lower risk of mortality (p<0.001). Furthermore, 73.3% of the deceased cases had comorbidities (p<0.001). The study demonstrates the protective effect of vaccination with either Covishield or Covaxin, which should hopefully address any misconceptions among the general public. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) has become a significant public health issue in Jinan City. However, the analysis of epidemiological characteristics and spatio-temporal clustering of SFTS in Jinan has not been studied yet. Methods: SFTS data from 2018−2022 in Jinan City were obtained from the China Information System for Disease Control and Prevention. Global spatial autocorrelation and local spatial autocorrelation analyses were performed using ArcGIS 10.2 software, and spatiotemporal hotspot area detection was carried out using SatScan 9.6 software. Results: Between 2018 and 2022, 680 SFTS cases were reported in Jinan City, resulting in 53 deaths and an average case fatality rate of 7.8%. 99.0% of cases occurred between April and October, 91.9% individuals were over 50 years old, and 87.79% were primarily farmers. A positive spatial correlation of SFTS in Jinan was observed (Moran's I value between 0.135−0.197, P<0.001), indicating spatial aggregation, primarily in Licheng, Zhangqiu, Laiwu, and Gangcheng districts in southeastern Jinan. Spatiotemporal scanning detected one class I and two class II aggregation areas, with the class I aggregation area (RR = 5.66, LLR = 192.547, P<0.001) locating in southeastern Jinan City, comprising 31 towns/streets, and an aggregation time from 13 May 2020 to 13 October 2022. Conclusion: Spatial and temporal aggregation of SFTS is evident in Jinan. Based on the spatial and temporal distribution and epidemiological characteristics, prevention and control measures such as public education, monitoring, and training should target key populations in high-incidence epidemic areas. The present study aimed to verify the time series (2000–2017) of death rates by suicide and its associated factors in 4 municipalities in the extreme south of Brazil. Data were obtained through the analysis of medical reports and police report bulletins at the Instituto Médico Legal, in the city of Rio Grande. The suicide rate in the Rio Grande region varied from 4 to 11 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants and it is estimated that by 2030 this rate could reach 16.5 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants. The rural cities of Santa Vitória do Palmar and Chuí present even higher suicide averages when compared to Rio Grande, the most populous city of the four. The death rate from suicide increased gradually in the period analyzed, with the prevalence rising among the youngest and the elderly population. A more comprehensive understanding of the influences of environmental issues on suicidal decisions constitutes an important action that needs to be taken, both because of regional vulnerabilities and the target population identified. Evidence indicates that knowledge of factors affecting individuals residing in this Brazilian region where increased suicide rates are recorded needs to be recognized as a priority. Abstract:Aim: Exploring trends in 1) alcohol-specific mortality and 2) alcohol sales in European countries in the years before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: Complete data on alcohol-specific mortality and alcohol sales were obtained for 14 European countries (13 EU countries and UK) for the years 2010 to 2020, with six countries having mortality data available up to 2021. Age-standardised mortality rates were calculated and descriptive statistics used. Results: When compared to 2019, alcohol-specific mortality rates in 2020 increased by 7.7 % and 8.2 % for women and men, respectively. Increases in alcohol-specific mortality were seen in the majority of countries and continued in 2021. In contrast, alcohol sales declined by an average of 5.0 %. Conclusion: Despite a drop in alcohol consumption, more people died due to alcohol-specific causes during the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Most COVID-19 vulnerability indices rely on measures that are biased by rates of exposure or are retrospective like mortality rates that offer little opportunity for intervention. Methods: We produced an infection-severity vulnerability index by calculating the proportion of all recorded positive cases that were severe and attended by ambulances at small area scale for the East Midlands of the UK between May 2020 and April 2022. We produced maps identifying regions with high and low vulnerability, investigated the accuracy of the index over shorter and longer time periods, and explored the utility of the MHVI compared to other common proxy measures and indices. Analysis included exploring the correlation between our novel index and the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD). Results: The MHVI captures geospatial dynamics that single metrics alone often overlook, including the compound health challenges associated with disadvantaged and declining coastal towns inhabited by communities with post-industrial health legacies. A moderate negative correlation between MHVI and IMD reflects spatial analysis which suggests that high vulnerability occurs in affluent rural as well as deprived coastal and urban communities. Further, the MHVI estimates of severity rates are comparable to infection fatality rates for COVID-19. Conclusions: The MHVI identifies regions with known high rates of poor health outcomes prior to the pandemic that case rates or mortality rates alone fail to identify. Introduction. In 2020, suicide was the third leading cause of death in Mexico among young people ages 15 and 29, accounting for 43.0% of all suicides in the country, making it a major public health issue. Objective. To explore changes in the geographic distribution of suicide rates by state and to analyze the magnitude, distribution, and pattern of suicide mortality in young Mexicans ages 15 to 29 between 1990 and 2020. Method. Descriptive, ecological time-series study, based on official information. Standardized mortality rates were calculated using information on deaths (INEGI) and population estimates (CONAPO). The magnitude, distribution, and patterns of suicide mortality at the national level and by state were analyzed using the Joinpoint segmented regression model. Results. From 1990 to 2020, suicide mortality in young people increased by 198% and was higher in women (285%) than men (178%). The states with the highest suicide mortality rates from 2016 to 2020 were Chihuahua (18.5 suicides/100,000 young people ages 15-29), Aguascalientes (16.6), Yucatán (14.4), Guanajuato (14.1), and San Luis Potosí (12.9), accounting for 23.0% of total suicide deaths. The study of mortality trends could contribute to the management of a national suicide prevention strategy in young Mexicans, providing support for public health decision-making, such as the identification of the states and regions that should be prioritized. While some studies have previously estimated lives saved by COVID-19 vaccination, we estimate how many deaths could have been averted by vaccination in the US but were not because of a failure to vaccinate. We used a simple method based on a nationally representative dataset to estimate the preventable deaths among unvaccinated individuals in the US from May 30, 2021 to September 3, 2022 adjusted for the effects of age and time. We estimated that at least 232,000 deaths could have been prevented among unvaccinated adults during the 15 months had they been vaccinated with at least a primary series. While uncertainties exist regarding the exact number of preventable deaths and more granular data are needed on other factors causing differences in death rates between the vaccinated and unvaccinated groups to inform these estimates, this method is a rapid assessment on vaccine-preventable deaths due to SARS-CoV-2 that has crucial public health implications. The Covid-19 pandemic caused an unusual population mortality rate. This paper aims to determine a causal relationship and its incidence between the Technical Efficiency (TE) of health systems and the Covid-19 mortality rate. Using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) methodology and the OLS, GLS and 2SLS adjustment methods, in 108 countries grouped according to per capita health expenditure, it was found that a 1% increase in the TE of the health systems of the analyzed countries reduces the number of deaths from Covid-19 by between 61 and 127 per hundred thousand inhabitants, concluding that the efficiency of expenditure was transcendental in the prevention of mortality caused by the pandemic. Background: Prevalence of dementia illness, causing certain morbidity and mortality globally, places burden on global public health. This study primary goal was to assess future risks of dying from severe dementia, given specific return period, within selected group of regions or nations. Methods: Traditional statistical approaches do not have benefits of effectively handling large regional dimensionality, along with nonlinear cross-correlations between various regional observations. In order to produce reliable long-term projections of excessive dementia death rate risks, this study advocates novel bio-system reliability technique, that being particularly suited for multi-regional environmental, biological, and health systems. Data: Raw clinical data has been used as an input to the suggested population-based, bio-statistical technique using data from medical surveys and several centers. Results: Novel spatiotemporal health system reliability methodology has been developed and applied to dementia death rates raw clinical data. Suggested methodology shown to be capable of dealing efficiently with spatiotemporal clinical observations of multi-regional nature. Accurate disease risks multi-regional spatiotemporal prediction being done, relevant confidence intervals have been presented as well. Conclusions: Based on available clinical survey dataset, the proposed approach may be applied in a variety of clinical public health applications. Confidence bands, given for predicted dementia-associated death rate levels with return periods of interest, have been reasonably narrow, indicating practical values of advocated prognostics.
