Spin–valley locking is ubiquitous among transition metal dichalcogenides with local or global inversion asymmetry, in turn stabilizing properties such as Ising superconductivity, and opening routes towards ‘valleytronics’. The underlying valley–spin splitting is set by spin–orbit coupling but can be tuned via the application of external magnetic fields or through proximity coupling. However, only modest changes have been realized to date. Here, we investigate the electronic structure of the V-intercalated transition metal dichalcogenide V1/3NbS2 using microscopic-area spatially resolved and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our measurements and corresponding density functional theory calculations reveal that the bulk magnetic order induces a giant valley-selective Ising coupling exceeding 50 meV in the surface NbS2 layer, equivalent to application of a ~250 T magnetic field. This energy scale is of comparable magnitude to the intrinsic spin–orbit splittings, and indicates how coupling of local magnetic moments to itinerant states of a transition metal dichalcogenide monolayer provides a powerful route to controlling their valley–spin splittings. The present study reports how the fast processing of the triple halide perovskite enables the retention of chlorine and the beneficial role of chlorine in enhancing the indoor light harvesting of a wide bandgap triple anion (TA) perovskite CH3NH3PbI2.6Br0.2Cl0.2. The kinetics of chlorine incorporation/escape investigated by in situ grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering revealed the escape of chlorine after the first ten minutes of thermal annealing and the findings were corroborated with elemental analysis by wavelength dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The best-performing TA perovskite indoor-photovoltaic device achieved a steady-state power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.1% with an output power density of ∼75 μW cm−2 under 1000 lux indoor illumination (0.3 mW cm−2 irradiance). Improved crystalline quality, reduced density of trap states and longer carrier lifetime were achieved by the triple anion alloying method. The detrimental role of the commonly used hole transporting layer (HTL) of Spiro-MeOTAD under indoor lighting conditions leading to J–V hysteresis was also investigated, which could then be effectively suppressed by replacing Spiro-MeOTAD with undoped P3HT. The optimized TA perovskite indoor PV cells were then successfully used to wirelessly power a textile fiber-based temperature sensor. The results from the present study demonstrate a novel route to incorporate chlorine effectively and maximize the steady state power output from halide perovskite indoor photovoltaic devices and their promising potential for the IoT industry. Multiresonant thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) compounds are attractive as emitters for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) as they can simultaneously harvest both singlet and triplet excitons to produce light in the device and show very narrow emission spectra, which translates to excellent color purity. Here, we report the first example of an MR-TADF emitter (DOBDiKTa) that fuses together fragments from the two major classes of MR-TADF compounds, those containing boron (DOBNA) and those containing carbonyl groups (DiKTa) as acceptor fragments in the MR-TADF skeleton. The resulting molecular design, this compound shows desirable narrowband pure blue emission and efficient TADF character. The co-host OLED with DOBDiKTa as the emitter showed a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) of 17.4 %, an efficiency roll-off of 32 % at 100 cd m−2, and Commission Internationale de l’Éclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.14, 0.12). Compared to DOBNA and DiKTa, DOBDiKTa shows higher device efficiency with reduced efficiency roll-off while maintaining a high color purity, which demonstrates the promise of the proposed molecular design. Cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) with cooperativity far greater than unity enables high-fidelity quantum sensing and information processing. The high-cooperativity regime is often reached through the use of short single-mode resonators. More complicated multimode resonators, such as the near-confocal optical Fabry-Prot cavity, can provide intracavity atomic imaging in addition to high cooperativity. This capability has recently proved important for exploring quantum many-body physics in the driven-dissipative setting. In this work, we show that a confocal-cavity–QED microscope can realize cooperativity in excess of 110. This cooperativity is on par with the very best single-mode cavities (which are far shorter) and 21 times greater than single-mode resonators of similar length and mirror radii. The 1.7-μm imaging resolution is naturally identical to the photon-mediated interaction range. We measure these quantities by determining the threshold of cavity superradiance when small optically tweezed Bose-Einstein condensates are pumped at various intracavity locations. Transmission measurements of an ex situ cavity corroborate these results. We provide a theoretical description that shows how cooperativity enhancement arises from the dispersive coupling to the atoms of many near-degenerate modes. Publisher PDF

Charge diffusion and extraction are crucial steps in the operation of solar cells. Here we show that time-resolved photoluminescence can be used to study electron diffusion in hybrid perovskite films and subsequent transfer to the adjacent electron extraction layer. As diffusion and transfer to the extraction layer are consecutive processes, they can be hard to distinguish, but by exciting from each side of the sample we can separate them and identify which process limits charge extraction. We find that the introduction of a fullerene monolayer between the methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) and the electron-transporting SnO2 layers greatly increases the electron transfer velocity between them to the extent that electron diffusion limits the rate of electron extraction. Our results suggest that increasing the electron diffusion coefficient in MAPbI3 would further enhance the electron extraction rate, which could result in more efficient n–i–p type solar cells. We describe an optical method to directly measure position-dependent thermal diffusivity of reflective single crystal samples across a broad range of temperatures for condensed matter physics research. Two laser beams are used, one as a source to locally modulate the sample temperature, and the other as a probe of sample reflectivity, which is a function of the modulated temperature. Thermal diffusivity is obtained from the phase delay between source and probe signals. We combine this technique with a microscope setup in an optical cryostat, in which the sample is placed on a 3-axis piezo-stage, allowing for spatially resolved measurements. Furthermore, we demonstrate experimentally and mathematically that isotropic in-plane diffusivity can be obtained when overlapping the two laser beams instead of separating them in the traditional way, which further enhances the spatial resolution to a micron scale, especially valuable when studying inhomogeneous or multidomain samples. We discuss in detail the experimental conditions under which this technique is valuable, and demonstrate its performance on two stoichiometric bilayer ruthenates: Sr3Ru2O7 and Ca3Ru2O7. The spatial resolution allowed us to study the diffusivity in single domains of the latter, and we uncovered a temperature-dependent in-plane diffusivity anisotropy. Finally, we used the enhanced spatial resolution enabled by overlapping the two beams to measure temperature-dependent diffusivity of Ti-doped Ca3Ru2O7, which exhibits a metal-insulator transition. We observed large variations of transition temperature over the same sample, originating from doping inhomogeneity, and pointing to the power of spatially resolved techniques in accessing inherent properties., 30 pages, 5 figures in the main text, and 5 figures in Appendix

The single-layered ruthenate Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is one of the most enigmatic unconventional superconductors. While for many years it was thought to be the best candidate for a chiral $p$-wave superconducting ground state, desirable for topological quantum computations, recent experiments suggest a singlet state, ruling out the original $p$-wave scenario. The superconductivity as well as the properties of the multi-layered compounds of the ruthenate perovskites are strongly influenced by a van Hove singularity in proximity of the Fermi energy. Tiny structural distortions move the van Hove singularity across the Fermi energy with dramatic consequences for the physical properties. Here, we determine the electronic structure of the van Hove singularity in the surface layer of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ by quasiparticle interference imaging. We trace its dispersion and demonstrate from a model calculation accounting for the full vacuum overlap of the wave functions that its detection is facilitated through the octahedral rotations in the surface layer., 13 pages, 6 figures, and supplementary information

We report the evolution of the electronic structure at the surface of the layered perovskite Sr2RuO4 under large in-plane uniaxial compression, leading to anisotropic B1g strains of εxx − εyy = −0.9 ± 0.1%. From angle-resolved photoemission, we show how this drives a sequence of Lifshitz transitions, reshaping the low-energy electronic structure and the rich spectrum of van Hove singularities that the surface layer of Sr2RuO4 hosts. From comparison to tight-binding modelling, we find that the strain is accommodated predominantly by bond-length changes rather than modifications of octahedral tilt and rotation angles. Our study sheds new light on the nature of structural distortions at oxide surfaces, and how targeted control of these can be used to tune density of states singularities to the Fermi level, in turn paving the way to the possible realisation of rich collective states at the Sr2RuO4 surface. Kagome materials have emerged as a setting for emergent electronic phenomena that encompass different aspects of symmetry and topology. It is debated whether the XV$_6$Sn$_6$ kagome family (where X is a rare earth element), a recently discovered family of bilayer kagome metals, hosts a topologically non-trivial ground state resulting from the opening of spin-orbit coupling gaps. These states would carry a finite spin-Berry curvature, and topological surface states. Here, we investigate the spin and electronic structure of the XV$_6$Sn$_6$ kagome family. We obtain evidence for a finite spin-Berry curvature contribution at the center of the Brillouin zone, where the nearly flat band detaches from the dispersing Dirac band because of spin-orbit coupling. In addition, the spin-Berry curvature is further investigated in the charge density wave regime of ScV$_6$Sn$_6$, and it is found to be robust against the onset of the temperature-driven ordered phase. Utilizing the sensitivity of angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy to the spin and orbital angular momentum, our work unveils the spin-Berry curvature of topological kagome metals, and helps to define its spectroscopic fingerprint., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures

We report the first experimental realization of the prime number quantum potential $V_N(x)$, defined as the potential entering the single-particle Schr\"{o}dinger Hamiltonian with eigenvalues given by the first $N$ prime numbers. We use holographic optical traps and, in particular, a spatial light modulator to tailor the potential to the desired shape. As a further application, we also implement a potential with lucky numbers, a sequence of integers generated by a different sieve than the familiar Eratosthenes's sieve used for the primes. Our results pave the way towards the realization of quantum potentials with arbitrary sequences of integers as energy levels and show, in perspective, the possibility to set up quantum systems for arithmetic manipulations or mathematical tests involving prime numbers., Comment: 12 pages, 6 ifgures

We perform nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of the oxygen-17 Knight shifts for Sr2RuO4, while subjected to uniaxial stress applied along [100] direction. The resulting strain is associated with a strong variation of the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the inferred magnetic response. A quasiparticle description based on density-functional theory calculations, supplemented by many-body renormalizations, is found to reproduce our experimental results, and highlights the key role of a van-Hove singularity. The Fermi-liquid coherence scale is shown to be tunable by strain, and driven to low values as the associated Lifshitz transition is approached. Publisher PDF

We find a highly anisotropic response. Under compression along the b axis, which reduces the orthorhombicity of the CuO2 planes, Tc is broadly flat for stresses up to at least 1.7 GPa. Under compression along the a axis, Tc decreases steeply. For stresses beyond ≈1 GPa the decrease is quasilinear. We hypothesize that superconductivity is suppressed by competition with uniaxial charge density wave order, which has been found to onset at ≈1 GPa. Publisher PDF

We study how polariton condensation modifies charge transport in organic materials. In typical organic materials, charge transport proceeds via incoherent hopping. We therefore provide an approach to determine how the rate and final state of this hopping process is affected by strong matter-light coupling and polariton condensation. We show how the hopping process may create excitations when starting from a state with a finite excitation density. That is, how hopping can change the state of a lower polariton condensate by creating upper polaritons, optically inactive excitonic dark states, or by exciting vibrational sidebands. While the matrix elements for these processes can be large, for typical materials at room temperature, such excitations are suppressed by thermal factors, and ground state processes dominate. We thus study how the ground state hopping rate depends on condensate density, matter-light coupling, and cavity photon detuning. All these factors change the vibrational configuration associated with the optically active molecules, which can enhance or suppress hopping by increasing or decreasing the vibrational overlap with the state of a charged molecule. We show that hopping rates can be exponentially sensitive to detuning and condensate density, allowing an increase or decrease of hopping rate by two orders of magnitude., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures

Magnonic devices operating at terahertz frequencies offer intriguing prospects for high-speed electronics with minimal energy dissipation However, guiding and manipulating terahertz magnons via external parameters present formidable challenges. Here we report the results of magnetic Raman scattering experiments on the antiferromagnetic spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr2IrO4 under uniaxial stress. We find that the energies of zone-center magnons are extremely stress sensitive: lattice strain of 0.1% increases the magnon energy by 40%. The magnon response is symmetric with respect to the sign of the applied stress (tensile or compressive), but depends strongly on its direction in the IrO2 planes. A theory based on coupling of the spin-orbit-entangled iridium magnetic moments to lattice distortions provides a quantitative explanation of the Raman data and a comprehensive framework for the description of magnon-lattice interactions in magnets with strong spin-orbit coupling. The possibility to efficiently manipulate the propagation of terahertz magnons via external stress opens up multifold design options for reconfigurable magnonic devices.

We study the dynamics of multimode polariton lasing in organic microcavities by using a second-order cumulant equation approach. By inspecting the time evolution of the photon mode occupations, we show that if multiple lasing peaks are observed in time-integrated mode occupations, the reason can be either bi-modal lasing or temporal switching between several modes. The former takes place within a narrow range of parameters while the latter occurs more widely. We find that the origin of the temporal switching is different in the weak- and strong-coupling regimes. At weak coupling slope efficiency is the determining factor, while for strong coupling it is changes in the eigenmodes and gain spectrum upon pumping. This difference is revealed by investigating the photoluminescence and momentum-resolved gain spectra. Our results underscore the importance of understanding the time evolution of the populations when characterizing the lasing behaviour of a multimode polariton system, and show how these features differ between weak and strong coupling., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures

Materials with multiple superconducting phases are rare. Here, we report the discovery of two-phase unconventional superconductivity in CeRh2As2 Using thermodynamic probes, we establish that the superconducting critical field of its high-field phase is as high as 14 tesla, even though the transition temperature is only 0.26 kelvin. Furthermore, a transition between two different superconducting phases is observed in a c axis magnetic field. Local inversion-symmetry breaking at the cerium sites enables Rashba spin-orbit coupling alternating between the cerium sublayers. The staggered Rashba coupling introduces a layer degree of freedom to which the field-induced transition and high critical field seen in experiment are likely related. Postprint Postprint

Single-crystal delafossite PdCoO2 is known to have an extremely low intrinsic impurity concentration of ~0.001%, demonstrating extraordinarily high conductivity with a mean free path of ~20 microns at low temperatures. However, when grown as thin films, the resistivity at room temperature increases by a factor of 3 to 80 times, depending on the film thickness. Using scanning transmission electron microscopy, we identify different classes of defects for the single crystal vs epitaxial thin film. The dominant defect for single-crystal PdCoO2 is found to be ribbon-like defects. For the thin films, we identify different types of defects arising in epitaxial thin films mainly due to substrate termination that disrupt the lateral connectivity of the conducting planes. Our results are consistent with the high conductivity of single crystals and increased electrical resistivity of the thin films compared to that of single crystals, suggesting that selecting a proper substrate, improving surface quality, and reducing the step density are the keys to enhance the film quality for utilizing PdCoO2 as a platform for future applications. Van-der-Waals (vdW) ferromagnets have enabled the development of heterostructures assembled from exfoliated monolayers with spintronics functionalities, making it important to understand and ultimately tune their magnetic properties at the microscopic level. Information about the magnetic properties of these systems comes so far largely from macroscopic techniques, with little being known about the microscopic magnetic properties. Here, we combine spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy and quasi-particle interference imaging with neutron scattering to establish the magnetic and electronic properties of the metallic vdW ferromagnet Fe3GeTe2. By imaging domain walls at the atomic scale, we can relate the domain wall width to the exchange interaction and magnetic anisotropy extracted from the magnon dispersion as measured in inelastic neutron scattering, with excellent agreement between the two techniques. From comparison with Density Functional Theory calculations we can assign the quasi-particle interference to be dominated by spin-majority bands. We find a dimensional dichotomy of the bands at the Fermi energy: bands of minority character are predominantly two-dimensional in character, whereas the bands of majority character are three-dimensional. Applying in-plane uniaxial pressure to strongly correlated low-dimensional systems has been shown to tune the electronic structure dramatically. For example, the unconventional superconductor Sr2RuO4 can be tuned through a single Van Hove point, resulting in strong enhancement of both Tc and Hc2. Out-of-plane (c axis) uniaxial pressure is expected to tune the quasi-two-dimensional structure even more strongly, by pushing it towards two Van Hove points simultaneously. Here, we achieve a record uniaxial stress of 3.2 GPa along the c axis of Sr2RuO4. Hc2 increases, as expected for increasing density of states, but unexpectedly Tc falls. As a first attempt to explain this result, we present three-dimensional calculations in the weak interaction limit. We find that within the weak-coupling framework there is no single order parameter that can account for the contrasting effects of in-plane versus c-axis uniaxial stress, which makes this new result a strong constraint on theories of the superconductivity of Sr2RuO4. Recent experiments suggest that Sr2RuO4 has a two-component superconducting order parameter (OP). A two-component OP has multiple degrees of freedom in the superconducting state that can result in low-energy collective modes or the formation of domain walls—a possibility that would explain a number of experimental observations including the smallness of the signature of time reversal symmetry breaking at Tc and telegraph noise in critical current experiments. We use resonant ultrasound spectroscopy to perform ultrasound attenuation measurements across the superconducting Tc of Sr2RuO4. We find that compressional sound attenuation increases by a factor of 7 immediately below Tc , in sharp contrast with what is found in both conventional (s-wave) and high-Tc (d-wave) superconductors. Our observations are most consistent with the presence of domain walls that separate different configurations of the superconducting OP. The fact that we only observe an increase in sound attenuation for compressional strains, and not for shear strains, suggests an inhomogeneous superconducting state formed of two distinct, accidentally degenerate superconducting OPs that are not related to each other by symmetry. Whatever the mechanism, a factor of 7 increase in sound attenuation is a singular characteristic that must be reconciled with any potential theory of superconductivity in Sr2RuO4. Publisher PDF

The strong nonlinearities of exciton-polariton condensates in lattices make them suitable candidates for neuromorphic computing and physical simula- tions of complex problems. So far, all room temperature polariton condensate lattices have been achieved by nanoimprinting microcavities, which by nature lacks the crucial tunability required for realistic reconfigurable simulators. Here, we report the observation of a quantised oscillating nonlinear quantum fluid in 1D and 2D potentials in an organic microcavity at room temperature, achieved by an on-the-fly fully tuneable optical approach. Remarkably, the condensate is delocalised from the excitation region by macroscopic dis- tances, leading both to longer coherence and a threshold one order of mag- nitude lower than that with a conventional Gaussian excitation profile. We observe different mode selection behaviour compared to inorganic materials, which highlights the anomalous scaling of blueshift with pump intensity and the presence of sizeable energy-relaxation mechanisms. Our work is a major step towards a fully tuneable polariton simulator at room temperature. We introduce a numerical method to determine the Hamiltonian of Mean Force (HMF) Gibbs state for a quantum system strongly coupled to a reservoir. The method adapts the Time Evolving Matrix Product Operator (TEMPO) algorithm to imaginary time propagation. By comparing the real-time and imaginary-time propagation for a generalized spin-boson model, we confirm that the HMF Gibbs state correctly predicts the steady state. We show that the numerical dynamics match the polaron master equation at strong coupling. We illustrate the potential of the imaginary-time TEMPO approach by exploring reservoir-induced entanglement between qubits., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Interacting Bosons, loaded in artificial lattices, have emerged as a modern platform to explore collective manybody phenomena, quantum phase transitions and exotic phases of matter as well as to enable advanced on chip simulators. Such experiments strongly rely on well-defined shaping the potential landscape of the Bosons, respectively Bosonic quasi-particles, and have been restricted to cryogenic, or even ultra-cold temperatures. On chip, the GaAs-based exciton-polariton platform emerged as a promising system to implement and study bosonic non-linear systems in lattices, yet demanding cryogenic temperatures. In our work, we discuss the first experiment conducted on a polaritonic lattice at ambient conditions: We utilize fluorescent proteins as an excitonic gain material, providing ultra-stable Frenkel excitons. We directly take advantage of their soft nature by mechanically shaping them in the photonic one-dimensional lattice. We demonstrate controlled loading of the condensate in distinct orbital lattice modes of different symmetries, and finally explore, as an illustrative example, the formation of a gap solitonic mode, driven by the interplay of effective interaction and negative effective mass in our lattice. The observed phenomena in our open dissipative system are comprehensively scrutinized by a nonequilibrium model of polariton condensation. We believe, that this work is establishing the organic polariton platform as a serious contender to the well-established GaAs platform for a wide range of applications relying on coherent Bosons in lattices, given its unprecedented flexibility, cost effectiveness and operation temperature., 19 pages, 4 figures

Organic optoelectronic devices combine high-performance, simple fabrication and distinctive form factors. They are widely integrated in smart devices and wearables as flexible, high pixel density organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays, and may be scaled to large area by roll-to-roll printing for lightweight solar power systems. Exceptionally thin and flexible organic devices may enable future integrated bioelectronics and security features. However, as a result of their low charge mobility, these are generally thought to be slow devices with microsecond response times, thereby limiting their full scope of potential applications. By investigating the factors limiting their bandwidth and overcoming them, we demonstrate here exceptionally fast OLEDs with bandwidths in the hundreds of MHz range. This opens up a wide range of potential applications in spectroscopy, communications, sensing and optical ranging. As an illustration of this, we have demonstrated visible light communication using OLEDs with data rates exceeding 1 gigabit per second., Organic LEDs (OLEDs) have generally been considered to be slow devices. Through engineering the structure and materials of OLEDs, the authors achieve a breakthrough in the high-speed operation of OLEDs and demonstrate a 1 Gbps optical wireless link using the OLEDs.

Metamagnetic transitions are analogs of a pressure-driven gas-liquid transition in water. In insulators, they are marked by a superlinear increase in the magnetization that occurs at a field strength set by the spin exchange interactions. Here we study topological metamagnets, in which the magnetization is itself a topological quantity and for which we find a single transition line for two materials with substantially different magnetic interactions: the spin ices Dy2Ti2O7 and Ho2Ti2O7. We study single crystals under magnetic field and stress applied along the [001] direction and show that this transition, of the Kasteleyn type, has a magnetization versus field curve with upward convexity and a distinctive asymmetric peak in the susceptibility. We also show that the dynamical response of Ho2Ti2O7 is sensitive to changes in the Ho3+ environment induced by compression along [001]. Uniaxial compression may open up experimental access to equilibrium properties of spin ice at lower temperatures. Publisher PDF

npj quantum materials 7(1), 98 (2022). doi:10.1038/s41535-022-00508-9, Reducing the thickness of a material to its two-dimensional (2D) limit can have dramatic consequences for its collective electronic states, including magnetism, superconductivity, and charge and spin ordering. An extreme case is $TiTe_2$, where a charge density wave (CDW) emerges in the single-layer, which is absent for the bulk compound, and whose origin is still poorly understood. Here, we investigate the electronic band structure evolution across this CDW transition using temperature-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our study reveals an orbital-selective band hybridisation between the backfolded conduction and valence bands occurring at the CDW phase transition, which in turn leads to a significant electronic energy gain, underpinning the CDW transition. For the bulk compound, we show how this energy gain is almost completely suppressed due to the three-dimensionality of the electronic band structure, including via a kz-dependent band inversion which switches the orbital character of the valence states. A chiral quantum Hall (QH) edge state placed in proximity to an s-wave superconductor experiences induced superconducting correlations. Recent experiments have observed the effect of proximity-coupling in QH edge states through signatures of the mediating process of Andreev reflection. We present the microscopic theory behind this effect by modeling the system with a many-body Hamiltonian, consisting of an s-wave superconductor, subject to spin-orbit coupling and a magnetic field, which is coupled by electron tunneling to a QH edge state. By integrating out the superconductor we obtain an effective pairing Hamiltonian in the QH edge state. We clarify the qualitative appearance of nonlocal superconducting correlations in a chiral edge state and analytically predict the suppression of electron-hole conversion at low energies (Pauli blocking) and negative resistance as experimental signatures of Andreev reflection in this setup. In particular, we show how two surface phenomena of the superconductor, namely Rashba spin-orbit coupling and a supercurrent due to the Meissner effect, are essential for the Andreev reflection. The phenomenology and radical changes seen in materials properties traversing a quantum phase transition has captivated condensed matter research over past decades. Strong electronic correlations lead to novel electronic ground states, including magnetic order, nematicity and unconventional superconductivity. Providing a microscopic model for these requires detailed knowledge of the electronic structure in the vicinity of the Fermi energy, promising a complete understanding of the physics of the quantum critical point. Here, we demonstrate such a measurement at the surface of Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$. Our results show that, even in zero field, the electronic structure is strongly $C_2$ symmetric and that a magnetic-field drives both a Lifshitz transition and induces a charge-stripe order. We track the changes of the electronic structure as a function of field via quasi-particle interference imaging at ultralow temperatures. Description, In a major step toward the development of a quantum battery, superabsorption has been achieved in an organic microcavity., The rate at which matter emits or absorbs light can be modified by its environment, as markedly exemplified by the widely studied phenomenon of superradiance. The reverse process, superabsorption, is harder to demonstrate because of the challenges of probing ultrafast processes and has only been seen for small numbers of atoms. Its central idea—superextensive scaling of absorption, meaning larger systems absorb faster—is also the key idea underpinning quantum batteries. Here, we implement experimentally a paradigmatic model of a quantum battery, constructed of a microcavity enclosing a molecular dye. Ultrafast optical spectroscopy allows us to observe charging dynamics at femtosecond resolution to demonstrate superextensive charging rates and storage capacity, in agreement with our theoretical modeling. We find that decoherence plays an important role in stabilizing energy storage. Our work opens future opportunities for harnessing collective effects in light-matter coupling for nanoscale energy capture, storage, and transport technologies.

To provide a foundation for theoretical models of high-temperature superconductivity, experimental research has sought to establish correspondences between macroscopic transport coefficients on the one hand, and atomic-scale correlation functions measured by spectroscopic and scattering probes on the other hand. This research avenue has been confounded by the gradual onset of electronic ordering phenomena and of the corresponding transport anomalies. We report measurements of the uniaxial-stress dependence of the normal-state resistivity and Hall coefficient of the underdoped high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.67. We observe a remarkable correspondence between the differential stress responses of the transport coefficients and resonant X-ray diffraction features indicative of charge ordering, which parallels the phenomenology of classical charge-density-wave compounds. However, our observations imply that static charge order is not responsible for a sign reversal of the Hall coefficient, and suggest that the interplay with liquid-like, dynamical charge correlations is essential for the prominent transport anomalies in the underdoped cuprates.

The Mn3X family of compounds was the first in which a large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) was predicted to arise from a purely antiferromagnetic structure, due to the Berry curvature in momentum space. Nearly simultaneously with this prediction, a large AHE was observed experimentally in one of the hexagonal members of this family, Mn3Sn. Aligning antiferromagnetic domains, a necessary step for observation of the AHE, is more challenging for the cubic members of the Mn3X family, due to a combination of smaller spontaneous ferromagnetic moments and much stronger magnetic anisotropy. Here, we use a combination of uniaxial stress and applied magnetic field to align domains of bulk single-crystal Mn3Pt, and demonstrate for the first time a substantial AHE in a bulk sample of a cubic member of the Mn3X family. The AHE remains locked in with essentially no quantitative variation when the stress is ramped back to zero, which shows that it is not a consequence of any stress-induced ferromagnetic moment. We investigate the topological classification of the subgap bands induced in a two-dimensional superconductor by a densely packed chain of magnetic moments with ferromagnetic or spiral alignments. The wave functions for these bands are composites of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov-type states and magnetic scattering states and have a significant spatial extension away from the magnetic moments. We show that this spatial structure prohibits a straightforward extraction of a Hamiltonian useful for the topological classification. To address the latter correctly we construct a family of spatially varying topological Hamiltonians for the subgap bands adapted for the broken translational symmetry caused by the chain. The spatial dependence in particular captures the transition to the topologically trivial bulk phase when moving away from the chain by showing how this, necessarily discontinuous, transition can be understood from an alignment of zeros with poles of Green's functions. We show how to simulate a model of many molecules with both strong coupling to many vibrational modes and collective coupling to a single photon mode. We do this by combining process tensor matrix product operator methods with a mean-field approximation which reduces the dimension of the problem. We analyze the steady-state of the model under incoherent pumping to determine the dependence of the polariton lasing threshold on cavity detuning, light-matter coupling strength, and environmental temperature. Moreover, by measuring two-time correlations, we study quadratic fluctuations about the mean-field to calculate the photoluminescence spectrum. Immunodiagnostics have been widely used in the detection of disease biomarkers. The conventional immunological tests in central laboratories require expensive equipment and, for non-specialists, the tests are technically demanding and time-consuming, which has prevented their use by the public. Thus, point-of-care tests (POCT), such as lateral flow immunoassays, are being, or have been, developed as more convenient and low-cost methods for immunodiagnostics. However, the sensitivity of such tests is often a concern. Here, a fluorescence-linked immunosorbent assay (FLISA) using organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) as excitation light sources was investigated as a way forward for the development of compact and sensitive POCTs. Phycoerythrin (PE) was selected as the fluorescent dye, and OLEDs were designed with different emission spectra. The leak-age light of different OLEDs for exciting PE was then investigated to reduce the background noise and improve the sensitivity of the system. Finally, as proof of principle that OLED-based technology can be successfully further developed for POCT, antibody to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in human serum was detected by OLED-FLISA. The discovery of superconductivity in the quantum critical Kondo-lattice system YbRh2Si2 at an extremely low temperature of 2 mK has inspired efforts to perform high-resolution electrical resistivity measurements down to this temperature range in highly conductive materials. Here we show that control over the sample geometry by microstructuring using focused-ion-beam (FIB) techniques allows to reach ultra-low temperatures and increase signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) tenfold, without adverse effects to sample quality. In five experiments we show four-terminal sensing resistance and magnetoresistance measurements which exhibit sharp phase transitions at the N\'eel temperature, and Shubnikov-de-Haas (SdH) oscillations between 13 T and 18 T where we identified a new SdH frequency of 0.39 kT. The increased SNR allowed resistance fluctuation (noise) spectroscopy that would not be possible for bulk crystals, and confirmed intrinsic 1/f-type fluctuations. Under controlled strain, two thin microstructured samples exhibited a large increase of T_N from 67 mK up to 188 mK while still showing clear signatures of the phase transition and SdH oscillations. SQUID-based thermal noise spectroscopy measurements in a nuclear demagnetisation refrigerator down to 0.95 mK, show a sharp superconducting transition at T_c = 1.2 mK. These experiments demonstrate microstructuring as a powerful tool to investigate the resistance and the noise spectrum of highly conductive correlated metals over wide temperature ranges., Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures

Quasiparticle interference (QPI) imaging is well established to study the low-energy electronic structure in strongly correlated electron materials with unrivalled energy resolution. Yet, being a surface-sensitive technique, the interpretation of QPI only works well for anisotropic materials, where the dispersion in the direction perpendicular to the surface can be neglected and the quasiparticle interference is dominated by a quasi-2D electronic structure. Here, we explore QPI imaging of galena, a material with an electronic structure that does not exhibit pronounced anisotropy. We find that the quasiparticle interference signal is dominated by scattering vectors which are parallel to the surface plane however originate from bias-dependent cuts of the 3D electronic structure. We develop a formalism for the theoretical description of the QPI signal and demonstrate how this quasiparticle tomography can be used to obtain information about the 3D electronic structure and orbital character of the bands., Quasiparticle interference is a powerful tool for characterization of electronic structure which leverages scattering off defects; however, it is limited to quasi two-dimensional materials. Here, the authors demonstrate a method for reconstructing electronic structure of three-dimensional materials from quasiparticle interference data.

The distance that excitons can travel is a key parameter for organic photovoltaic materials. In the August issue of Science Advances, Sneyd and colleagues report a breakthrough in increasing exciton diffusion length to 300 nm by using highly ordered nanofibers. Intense work studying the ballistic regime of electron transport in two dimensional systems based on semiconductors and graphene had been thought to have established most of the key experimental facts of the field. In recent years, however, new forms of ballistic transport have become accessible in the quasi-two-dimensional delafossite metals, whose Fermi wavelength is a factor of 100 shorter than those typically studied in the previous work, and whose Fermi surfaces are nearly hexagonal in shape, and therefore strongly faceted. This has some profound consequences for results obtained from the classic ballistic transport experiment of studying bend and Hall resistances in mesoscopic squares fabricated from delafossite single crystals. We observe pronounced anisotropies in bend resistances and even a Hall voltage that is strongly asymmetric in magnetic field. Although some of our observations are non-intuitive at first sight, we show that they can be understood within a non-local Landauer-B\"uttiker analysis tailored to the symmetries of the square/hexagonal geometries of our combined device/Fermi surface system. Signatures of non-local transport can be resolved for squares of linear dimension of nearly 100 $\mu$m, approximately a factor of 15 larger than the bulk mean free path of the crystal from which the device was fabricated., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures (including supplementary information)

Nanoscale devices, either biol. or artificial, operate in a regime where the usual assumptions of a structureless Markovian bath do not hold. Being able to predict and study the dynamics of such systems is crucial and is usually done by tracing out the bath degrees of freedom, which implies losing information about the environment. To go beyond these approaches we use a numerically exact method relying on a matrix product state representation of the quantum state of a system and its environment to keep track of the bath explicitly. This method is applied to a specific example of interaction that depends on the spatial structure of a system made of two sites. The result is that we predict a non-Markovian dynamics where long-range couplings induce correlations into the environment. The environment dynamics can be naturally extracted from our method and shine a light on long-time feedback effects that are responsible for the observed non-Markovian recurrences in the eigenpopulations of the system. We report the magnetocaloric effect of a bilayered perovskite ruthenate Ca3Ru2O7 that has recently been recognized as an antiferromagnetic polar metal. The magnetic entropy change obtained from temperature dependence of the DC magnetization measurements shows peaks and valleys under the magnetic field near metamagnetic transitions, and enable us to map out a thermodynamic field–temperature phase-diagram. The area surrounded by the boundaries agrees well with a novel “metamagnetic texture” with spin modulation observed recently by small angle neutron scattering measurements. We demonstrate that a thermodynamically equilibrium state is realized between the antiferromagnetic and spin-polarized states throughout the metamagnetic transition in this polar metal. Postprint

When an optical emitter is strongly coupled to a vibrational bath the polaron transformation is often used to permit an accurate second-order Redfield master equation. However, the optical transition rates in the polaron frame are not analytic and approximations typically need to be made which result in the loss of anything other than simple additive effects of the two baths. In this paper, we derive an intuitive analytic expression for the polaron frame optical transition rates by means of a finite mode truncation of the vibrational bath. Using this technique, calculations of the transition rates converge for only a few modes in the truncated spectral density, and capture non-additive effects such as population inversion of a two-level system., 12 pages, 6 figures

The discovery of single-phase multiferroic materials and the understanding of coupling mechanisms between their spin and polarization is important from the point of view of next generation logic and memory devices. Herein we report the fabrication, dielectric, ferroelectric, piezo-response force microscopy, and magnetization measurements of Pd-substituted room-temperature magnetoelectric multiferroic PbPd0.3Ti0.7O3 (PbPdT) thin films. Highly oriented PbPdT thin films were deposited on {(LaAlO3)0.3(Sr2AlTaO6)0.7} (LSAT) substrates in oxygen atmosphere using pulsed laser deposition technique. X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the films had tetragonal phase with (001) orientation. Surface morphology studies using atomic force and scanning electron microscopy suggest a smooth and homogeneous distribution of grains on the film surface with roughness ~2 nm. A large dielectric constant of ~1700 and a low-loss tangent value of ~0.3 at 10 kHz were obtained at room temperature. Temperature dependent dielectric measurements carried out on Pt/PbPdT/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) metal-dielectric-metal capacitors suggest a ferroelectric to paraelectric transition above 670 K. The measured polarization hysteresis loops at room temperature were attributed to its ferroelectric behavior. From a Tauc plot of (αhν)2 versus energy, the direct band gap Eg of PbPdT thin films was calculated as 3 eV. Ferroelectric piezoelectric nature of the films was confirmed from a strong domain switching response revealed from piezo-response force microscopy. A well-saturated magnetization M-H loop with remanent magnetization of 3.5 emu/cm3 was observed at room temperature, and it retains ferromagnetic ordering in the temperature range 5–395 K. Origin of the magnetization could be traced to the mixed oxidation states of Pd2+/Pd4+ dispersed in polar PbTiO3 matrix, as revealed by our x-ray photoelectron spectroscopic results. These results suggest that PbPdT thin films are multiferroic (ferroelectric-ferromagnetic) at room temperature.

The exciton diffusion coefficient was found to be in the range of 0.003–0.007 cm2 s−1 which leads to a three-dimensional exciton diffusion length of up to 31 nm. We fabricated solar cells using bulk heterojunctions of these acceptors with the electron donor PTB7-Th which showed ∼7% efficiency and large scale phase separation. Strong light-matter coupling of a photon mode to tightly bound Frenkel excitons in organic materials has emerged as a versatile, room-temperature platform to study nonlinear many-particle physics and bosonic condensation. However, various aspects of the optical response of Frenkel excitons in this regime remained largely unexplored. Here, a hemispheric optical cavity filled with the fluorescent protein mCherry is utilized to address two important questions. First, combining the high quality factor of the microcavity with a well-defined mode structure allows to address whether temporal coherence in such systems can be competitive with their low-temperature counterparts. To this end, a coherence time greater than 150 ps is evidenced via interferometry, which exceeds the polariton lifetime by two orders of magnitude. Second, the narrow linewidth of the device allows to reliably trace the emission energy of the condensate with increasing particle density and thus to establish a fundamental picture which quantitatively explains the core nonlinear processes. It is found that the blueshift of the Frenkel exciton-polaritons is largely dominated by the reduction of the Rabi splitting due to phase space filling effects, which is influenced by the redistribution of polaritons in the system. The highly coherent emission at ambient conditions establishes organics as promising room temperature polariton lasers and the detailed insights on the non-linearity are of great benefit towards implementing nonlinear polaritonic devices, optical switches and lattices based on exciton-polaritons at room temperature. Band inversions are key to stabilising a variety of novel electronic states in solids, from topological surface states in inverted bulk band gaps of topological insulators to the formation of symmetry-protected three-dimensional Dirac and Weyl points and nodal-line semimetals. Here, we create a band inversion not of bulk states, but rather between manifolds of surface states. We realise this by aliovalent substitution of Nb for Zr and Sb for S in the ZrSiS family of nonsymmorphic semimetals. Using angle-resolved photoemission and density-functional theory, we show how two pairs of surface states, known from ZrSiS, are driven to intersect each other in the vicinity of the Fermi level in NbGeSb, as well as to develop pronounced spin-orbit mediated spin splittings. We demonstrate how mirror symmetry leads to protected crossing points in the resulting spin-orbital entangled surface band structure, thereby stabilising surface state analogues of three-dimensional Weyl points. More generally, our observations suggest new opportunities for engineering topologically and symmetry-protected states via band inversions of surface states., In press at Nature Communications. I give a personal account of the unfolding story of the unconventional superconductivity of Sr2RuO4. This is a subject of topical importance in light of recent measurements that suggest that its order parameter may be even parity, contrary to the picture that had built up over the course of over two decades of research. With an eye on the past, I stress the generous encouragement that I received from Ted Geballe in the early years of my Sr2RuO4 research. Looking to the future, I give my opinion about why the Sr2RuO4 problem is of major significance to the development of the field of unconventional superconductivity, whatever order parameter symmetry is finally established to be the correct one.

Bacterial infection and the growth of antibiotic resistance is a serious problem that leads to patient suffering, death and increased costs of healthcare. To address this problem, we propose using flexible organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) as light sources for photodynamic therapy (PDT) to kill bacteria. PDT involves the use of light and a photosensitizer to generate reactive oxygen species that kill neighbouring cells. We have developed flexible top-emitting OLEDs with the ability to tune the emission peak from 669 to 737 nm to match the photosensitizer, together with high irradiance, low driving voltage, long operational lifetime and adequate shelf-life. These features enable OLEDs to be the ideal candidate for ambulatory PDT light sources. A detailed study of OLED–PDT for killing Staphylococcus aureus was performed. The results show that our OLEDs in combination with the photosensitizer methylene blue, can kill more than 99% of bacteria. This indicates a huge potential for using OLEDs to treat bacterial infections. Flexible OLED technology is becoming increasingly mature and is ready to open new directions in antimicrobial photodynamic therapy. An international team led by Prof Ifor Samuel from University of St Andrews, UK presents a comprehensive study to show that flexible organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are ideal light sources to be used in photodynamic therapy to kill bacteria. They design the OLED device structure to enable large area, high uniformity, low driving voltage, long operational lifetime, adequate shelf-life and colour tunability and address all the requirements of photodynamic therapy. Actual biological experiments show killing rates of more than 99% for S. aureus bacteria. The approach clearly demonstrates the huge potential of OLEDs for treatment of bacterial infections and future wearable healthcare devices.

In this letter, we present evanescently coupled semiconductor laser arrays designed with a distributed Bragg reflector section for spectrally narrow emission and a combined waveguide section for high optical output powers. These devices were designed and fabricated in the AlGaAs material system with an InGaAsP quantum well providing emission in the 760–770 nm wavelength range. Measurements of the light-current characteristics reveal high optical output powers of 600 mW at 20 °C and 700 mW at 5 °C limited by thermal rollover without any signs of a catastrophic optical mirror damage or rapid power degradation. Spectrally narrow emission of 0.2 nm at −3 dB and a high wavelength stability with a small current tuning coefficient of 0.7 pm/mA were found. Far-field investigations reveal pre-dominant coupling of lowest order in-phase supermode emission without any sections for adjusting the phase of the electrical field vector for adjacent elements. The notion of a simple ordered state implies homogeneity. If the order is established by a broken symmetry, elementary Landau theory of phase transitions shows that only one symmetry mode describes this state. Precisely at points of phase coexistence domain states formed of large regions of different phases can be stabilized by long range interactions. In uniaxial antiferromagnets the so-called metamagnetism is an example of such a behavior, when an antiferromagnetic and field-induced spin-polarized paramagnetic/ferromagnetic state co-exist at a jump-like transition in the magnetic phase diagram. Here, combining experiment with theoretical analysis, we show that a different type of mixed state between antiferromagnetism and ferromagnetism can be created in certain acentric materials. In the small-angle neutron scattering experiments we observe a field-driven spin-state in the layered antiferromagnet Ca3Ru2O7, which is modulated on a scale between 8 and 20 nm and has both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic parts. We call this state a metamagnetic texture and explain its appearance by the chiral twisting effects of the asymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) exchange. The observation can be understood as an extraordinary coexistence, in one thermodynamic state, of spin orders belonging to different symmetries. Experimentally, the complex nature of this metamagnetic state is demonstrated by measurements of anomalies in electronic transport which reflect the spin-polarization in the metamagnetic texture, determination of the magnetic orbital moments, which supports the existence of strong spin-orbit effects, a pre-requisite for the mechanism of twisted magnetic states in this material., Comment: Supplementary materials included

Utilizing the powerful combination of molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we produce and study the effect of different terminating layers on the electronic structure of the metallic delafossite PdCoO2. Attempts to introduce unpaired electrons and synthesize new antiferromagnetic metals akin to the isostructural compound PdCrO2 have been made by replacing cobalt with iron in PdCoO2 films grown by MBE. Using ARPES, we observe similar bulk bands in these PdCoO2 films with Pd-, CoO2-, and FeO2-termination. Nevertheless, Pd- and CoO2-terminated films show a reduced intensity of surface states. Additionally, we are able to epitaxially stabilize PdFexCo1−xO2 films that show an anomaly in the derivative of the electrical resistance with respect to temperature at 20 K, but do not display pronounced magnetic order.
