The effective treatment of wastewater to mitigate environmental pollution remains a critical concern in modern society. This review examines the synthesis methods, physicochemical properties, and different application of ferric tungstate (FeWO4) as advanced multifunctional nanomaterial for wastewater treatment. The removal of various pollutants, including heavy metals, organic dyes, emerging contaminants, micro and nanoplastics from wastewater by FeWO4 are discussed. The review also highlights the significant uniqueness of FeWO4 nanoparticles, such as its high surface area, tunable surface chemistry, and adsorption, ozonation, photocatalytic and photo-Fenton capabilities. The environmental implications including the fate of FeWO4 adsorbed pollutants, toxicity and potential secondary pollution, are also discussed. Furthermore, the challenges and limitations, such as regeneration and scalability, that might affect the practical implementation of FeWO4-based treatment systems are also addressed. The multifunctional behaviour of FeWO4 provide insights into its efficiency and applicability in diverse wastewater treatment scenarios. Comparisons with other adsorbents and treatment methods elucidate the distinct advantages of FeWO4. The comprehensive analysis of its synthesis, properties, mechanisms, and applications is a foundation for researchers and practitioners working towards efficient and sustainable wastewater treatment solutions.

Cu-CHA zeolites have proven to be effective for NOx reduction, but a drawback in using CHA zeolites is the cost associated with using expensive organic structure-directing agents. To overcome this drawback, we are reporting here the synthesis of Cu-CHA zeolite catalysts in both their NH4-form as well as K-form that do not require the use of organic structure-directing agents. After comprehensive characterization by XRF, XRD, 27Al NMR spectroscopy, FE-SEM, SEM/EDS, N2-adsorption/desorption, NH3-TPD, H2-TPR, and XPS, the zeolite catalysts were tested for NOx conversion by NH3-selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR). Cu-NH4-CHA zeolite catalysts exhibited remarkable activity and thermal stability over a wide temperature window, outperforming their counterpart K-forms. Among the NH4-forms of CHA zeolite catalysts, the 0.1 M Cu-NH4-CHA showed the best catalytic performance, achieving 50% NOx conversion at a temperature as low as 192 °C, and reaching full conversion of NOx at 261 °C. These Cu-based CHA zeolite catalysts are promising thanks to their environmentally friendly synthesis and offer the opportunity of maximizing DeNOx strategies in applications for NOx pollution abatement.

Infectious diseases are constantly evolving to bypass antibiotics or create resistance against them. There is a piercing alarm for the need to improve the design of new effective antimicrobial agents such as antimicrobial peptides which are less prone to resistance and possess high sensitivity. This would guard public health in combating and overcoming stubborn pathogens and mitigate incurable diseases; however, the emergence of antimicrobial peptides’ shortcomings ranging from untimely degradation by enzymes to difficulty in the design against specific targets is a major bottleneck in achieving these objectives. This review is aimed at highlighting the recent progress in antimicrobial peptide development in the area of nanotechnology-based delivery, selectivity indices, synthesis and characterization, their doping and coating, and the shortfall of these approaches. This review will raise awareness of antimicrobial peptides as prospective therapeutic agents in the medical and pharmaceutical industries, such as the sensitive treatment of diseases and their utilization. The knowledge from this development would guide the future design of these novel peptides and allow the development of highly specific, sensitive, and accurate antimicrobial peptides to initiate treatment regimens in patients to enable them to have accommodating lifestyles.

The future of pesticide usage in agriculture is uncertain due to its unsustainability, adverse environmental impacts, and its association in enhanced phytopathogen resistance. Hence, this situation urges the development of new sustainable practices in agriculture. A promising approach involves endophytes, which are non-pathogenic microorganisms inhabiting the interior parts of plants. However, due to the vast diversity and complexity of plant microbiomes, a major gap has formed with regards to endophytic research and its application in phytopathogen biocontrol. The gap has mainly been increasing due to the difficulty of isolating underrepresented endophytes and due to limitation of previous genetic tools availability to further research and understand plant-microbe interaction, endophytic biocontrol capabilities and their biocontrol compounds. This review highlights the current challenges being encountered in this research field. Additionally, the research advances through utilization of specialized techniques (CRISPR/Cas9 system, nanoparticles and multi-omics) are highlighted to assist in elucidating the mechanism revolving around plant-microbe interactions and to generate model systems demonstrating improved biocontrol capabilities of endophytes. The ultimate goal of this review is to provide improved approaches that could be implement in an array of microorganism that will enhance the phytopathogen biocontrol field in order to create a sustainable agricultural sector.

The main interest now is the development of metallic or inorganic-organic compounds to prepare nanoparticle materials. The use of new compounds could be beneficial and open a new method for preparing nanomaterials to control the size, shape, and size of the nanocrystals. In this article, the thermal decomposition of [M2(o-tol)2(H2O)8] Cl4 (where o-tol is ortho-tolidine compound, M = Ni2+, Co2+, Cu2+) new precursor complex was discussed in solid-state conditions. The thermal decomposition route showed that the synthesized three complexes were easily decomposed into NiO, Co3O4 and CuO nanoparticles. This decomposition was performed at low temperatures (~600°C) in atmospheric air without using any expensive and toxic solvent or complicated equipment. The obtained product was identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). FT-IR, XRD and EDX analyses revealed that the NiO nanoparticles exhibit a face-centered-cubic lattice structure with a crystallite size of 9–12 nm. The formation of a highly pure spinel-type Co3O4 phase with cubic structure showed that the Co3O4 nanoparticles have a sphere-like morphology with an average size of 8–10 nm. The XRD patterns of the CuO confirmed that the monoclinic phase with the average diameter of the spherical nanoparticles was approximately 9–15 nm.

Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) decxycholate complexes are interesting due to their biologically active and deliberate interest in the research due to their coordination properties. The microanalytical ‘elemental analysis’, molar conductivity, (infrared and Raman) spectroscopy, thermal analyses (TGA/DSC), UV-vis spectra, and ESR for copper(II) decxycholate complex investigations were performed in the structural assignments of Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) decxycholate complexes. Reaction of the sodium deoxycholate ligand (C24H39O4Na) with three transition metal ions form the complexes of formulae, [M(C24H39O4)2(H2O)2]. xH2O where M = Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) where x = 2 for Cu(II) and x = 4 in case of M = Co(II) or Ni(II) metal ions. The FTIR spectra of the complexes show that decxycholate molecule is present as bidentate ligand. Molecular docking utilizing to additionally examine the interaction of COVID-19 (6LU7) with different complexes of deoxycholic acid with Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II). Furthermore, in the case of Co(II) deoxycholate complex, the probe is surrounded by amino residues Met235, Pro241, Glu240, Pro108, Gln110, Phe294, and Ile152. The probe molecule of Ni(II) deoxycholate complex is sited close to amino acids Tyr126, Tyr239, Leu287, Leu272, and Lys137. For, Cu(II) deoxycholate complex, the residues of amino acids comprise of Pro132, Pro108, Gln110, Gly109, Ile200, Asn203, Val202, His246, Pro293 and Tyr154. The binding energy was determined from the docking reads for Co(II)–6LU7, Ni(II)–6LU7 and Cu(II)–6LU7 deoxycholate compounds were found to be −446.99, −500.52, −398.13 kcal mol−1 individually.

The interspecies electron transfer (IET) between microbes and archaea is the key to how the anaerobic digestion process performs. However, renewable energy technology that utilizes the application of a bioelectrochemical system together with anaerobic additives such as magnetite-nanoparticles can promote both direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) as well as indirect interspecies electron transfer (IIET). This has several advantages, including higher removal of toxic pollutants present in municipal wastewater, higher biomass to renewable energy conversion, and greater electrochemical efficiencies. This review explores the synergistic influence of bioelectrochemical systems and anaerobic additives on the anaerobic digestion of complex substrates such as sewage sludge. The review discussions present the mechanisms and limitations of the conventional anaerobic digestion process. In addition, the applicability of additives in syntrophic, metabolic, catalytic, enzymatic, and cation exchange activities of the anaerobic digestion process are highlighted. The synergistic effect of bio-additives and operational factors of the bioelectrochemical system is explored. It is elucidated that a bioelectrochemical system coupled with nanomaterial additives can increase biogas–methane potential compared to anaerobic digestion. Therefore, the prospects of a bioelectrochemical system for wastewater require research attention.

Several key challenges are faced during sentiment analysis. One major problem is determining the sentiment of complex sentences, paragraphs, and text documents. A paragraph with multiple parts might have multiple sentiment values. Predicting the overall sentiment value for this paragraph will not produce all the information necessary for businesses and brands. Therefore, a paragraph with multiple sentences should be separated into simple sentences. With a simple sentence, it will be effective to extract all the possible sentiments. Therefore, to split a paragraph, that paragraph must be properly punctuated. Most social media texts are improperly punctuated, so separating the sentences may be challenging. This study proposes a punctuation-restoration algorithm using the transformer model approach. We evaluated different Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) models for our transformer encoding, in addition to the neural network used for evaluation. Based on our evaluation, the RobertaLarge with the bidirectional long short-term memory (LSTM) provided the best accuracy of 97% and 90% for restoring the punctuation on Amazon and Telekom data, respectively. Other evaluation criteria like precision, recall, and F1-score are also used.

The occurrence and fate of polyfluorinated compounds (PFCs) in the aquatic environment resulting from anthropogenic activities has become an emerging issue of environmental chemistry. PFCs have been detected in drinking water samples, aquatic life, human tissue, and blood serum. This is attributed to their xenobiotic attributes making them environmentally persistent, bio-accumulative, and globally distributed in water receiving bodies, posing serious health problems to aquatic life and human health. This is ascribed to PFCs’ peculiar physicochemical properties of being hydrophobic and oleophobic and their removal process from wastewater streams is different from any other organic pollutants. Therefore, this review summarizes the environmental occurrence and recent developments on microbial degradation of the most detected PFCs, i.e., perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) in water bodies. The available literature suggests that PFOA and PFOS are susceptible to biodegradation by Acidimicrobium sp. strain A6, Pseudomonas parafulva strain YAB1, Pseudomonas plecoglossicidia 2.4-D, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain HJ4. Moreover, the current study presents a summary on phytoremediation of PFOA and PFOS as a sustainable green technology. Despite the extensive work undertaken on bioremediation of PFOA and PFOS by biological processes, the available literature suggests that a lot of work still needs to be carried out aimed at investigating the biodegradation pathway of PFOA and PFOS by both microbial species and plants.

A vast quantity of untreated wastewater is discharged into the environment, resulting in contamination of receiving waters. A microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) is a promising bioelectrochemical system (BES) for wastewater treatment and energy production. However, poor design and control of MEC variables may lead to inhibition in the system. This study explored the utilization of Response Surface Methodology (RSM) on the synergistic aspects of MEC and magnetite nanoparticles for wastewater treatment. Influences of temperature (25–35 °C), voltage supply (0.3–1.3 V) and magnetite nanoparticle dosage (0.1–1.0 g) on the biochemical methane potentials (BMPs) were investigated with the aim of optimizing biogas yield, chemical oxygen demand removal and current density. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique verified that the quadratic models obtained were substantial, with p-values below 0.05 and high regression coefficients (R2). The optimum biogas yield of 563.02 mL/g VSfed, chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal of 97.52%, and current density of 26.05 mA/m2 were obtained at 32.2 °C, 0.77 V and 0.53 g. The RSM revealed a good comparison between the predicted and actual responses. This study revealed the effective utilization of statistical modeling and optimization to improve the performance of the MEC to achieve a sustainable and eco-friendly situation.

Conventional anaerobic digestion is currently challenged by limited degradability and low methane production. Herein, it is proposed that magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4-NPs) and bioelectrochemical systems can be employed for the improvement of organic content degradation. In this study, the effect of electrode configuration was examined through the application of a bioelectrochemical system and Fe3O4-NPs in anaerobic digestion (AD). A microbial electrolysis cell with cylindrical electrodes (MECC) and a microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) with rectangular electrodes were compared against the traditional AD process. Biochemical methane potential (BMP) tests were carried out using digesters with a working volume of 800 mL charged with 300 mL inoculum, 500 mL substrate, and 1 g Fe3O4-NPs. The electrodes (zinc and copper) of both digesters were inserted inside the BMPs and were powered with 0.4 V for 30 days at 40 °C. The MECC performed better, improving degradability, with enhanced methane percentage (by 49% > 39.1% of the control), and reduced water pollutants (chemical-oxygen demand, total organic carbon, total suspended solids, turbidity, and color) by more than 88.6%. The maximum current density was 33.3 mA/m2, and the coulombic efficiency was 54.4%. The MECC showed a remarkable potential to maximize methane enhancement and pollution removal by adjusting the electrode configuration.

The quest to enhance public health and the need for a reduction in the environmental solid wastes have prompted this study. Despite abundant studies on silica fume (SF or S) and waste glass powder (WGP or G), there is a need to understand the interaction of WGP with SF in the production of ordinary Portland cement (OPC or C)-based concrete using the water/binder ratio of 0.42. The investigated concrete comprised 90 wt.% of OPC and 10 wt.% of WGP+SF. The samples were denoted as C90GxS10−x such that x varied from 0–10 wt.% at the interval of 2.5. The findings revealed that an increase in the WGP/SF ratio enhanced the absorption of silica/glass blended concrete due to size incompatibility and proliferations of interfacial transition zones between the glass particle, silica fume and cement matrix. The density of fresh OPC concrete was higher than that of glass/silica blended concrete due to the difference in their relative densities. Incorporating WGP and SF in synergy enhanced silicate reorganization and led to a more amorphous binder and a reduction in hydroxyl-based compounds such as portlandite but caused microstructural heterogeneity in the morphology of the binder as obtained from XRD, FTIR and SEM/EDS results. The 28-day compressive strength of 46 MPa is achievable if the WGP and SF are kept within 2.5–5 wt.% and 5–7.5 wt.%, respectively. The study will foster the production of economic, environmental, and cost-efficient concrete.

Several pediatric mitochondrial disorders, including Leigh syndrome (LS), impact mitochondrial (mt) genetics, development, and metabolism, leading to complex pathologies and energy failure. The extent to which pathogenic mtDNA variants regulate disease severity in LS is currently not well understood. To better understand this relationship, we computed a glycolytic bioenergetics health index (BHI) for measuring mitochondrial dysfunction in LS patient fibroblast cells harboring varying percentages of pathogenic mutant mtDNA (T8993G, T9185C) exhibiting deficiency in complex V or complex I (T10158C, T12706C). Mitochondria are dynamic organelles that undergo rounds of fission and fusion and exhibit a wide range of morphologies that contribute to the regulation of different signaling pathways and various cellular functions. It is important to understand the differences between mitochondrial structure in health and disease so that therapies can be developed to maintain the homeostatic balance of mitochondrial dynamics. Mitochondrial disorders are multisystemic and characterized by complex and variable clinical pathologies. The dynamics of mitochondria in mitochondrial disorders is thus worthy of investigation. Therefore, in this study, we performed a comprehensive analysis of mitochondrial dynamics in ten patient-derived fibroblasts containing different mutations and deletions associated with various mitochondrial disorders. Our results suggest that the most predominant morphological signature for mitochondria in the diseased state is fragmentation, with eight out of the ten cell lines exhibiting characteristics consistent with fragmented mitochondria. To our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive study that quantifies mitochondrial dynamics in cell lines with a wide array of developmental and mitochondrial disorders. A more thorough analysis of the correlations between mitochondrial dynamics, mitochondrial genome perturbations, and bioenergetic dysfunction will aid in identifying unique morphological signatures of various mitochondrial disorders in the future.

Elevated concentrations of heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd) have a negative impact on staple crop production due to their ability to elicit cytotoxic and genotoxic effects on plants. In order to understand the relationship between Cd stress and plants in an effort to improve Cd tolerance, studies have identified genetic mechanisms which could be important for conferring stress tolerance. In recent years epigenetic studies have garnered much attention and hold great potential in both improving the understanding of Cd stress in plants as well as revealing candidate mechanisms for future work. This review describes some of the main epigenetic mechanisms involved in Cd stress responses. We summarize recent literature and data pertaining to chromatin remodeling, DNA methylation, histone acetylation and miRNAs in order to understand the role these epigenetic traits play in cadmium tolerance. The review aims to provide the framework for future studies where these epigenetic traits may be used in plant breeding and molecular studies in order to improve Cd tolerance.

Two mixed –ligand complexes [Cu(bipy)2N3(ClO4)] and [Cu(5,5’-DiMebipy)2(N3)](ClO4) have been prepared and characterized. The compounds were characterized by elemental analyses, IR and UV-Visible spectroscopy, room temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements, and conductivity measurement, while the solid-state structures have been established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. [Cu(bipy)2N3(ClO4)]crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c with cell constants a = 16.9027(3) Å, b = 7.59087(9) Å, c = 17.2614(3) Å, β = 111.2808(19)° and Z = 4. [Cu(5,5’-DiMebipy)2(N3)](ClO4) also crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c with the cell constants a = 16.0312(11) Å, b = 7.9889(5) Å, c = 20.7167(18) Å, β = 110.285(8)° and Z = 4. The UV-Vis spectra and X-ray determination indicate that [Cu(bipy)2N3(OClO3)] is distorted octahedral ligand field and non-electrolyte in nature while [Cu(5,5’-DiMebipy)2(N3)](ClO4) is a square pyramidal five coordinate complex and a 1:1 electrolyte. The magnetic moments of the two complexes in the range 1.78–1.83 B.M. reveal a single unpaired electron with a slight orbital contribution.

[Cu(phen)2(CH3COO)](ClO4).2H2O (1) and [Cu(bipy)2(CH3COO)]-(ClO4).H2O (2) {phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, bipy = 2,2’-bipyridine}were synthesized and characterized. The complexes were characterized by employying elemental analyses, infrared and UV-Visible spectroscopy, room temperature magnetic measurements and the crystal structures elucidated using X-ray diffraction experiment. The redox properties of the complexes were also investigated. Both structures have a square pyramidal CuN4O chromophore which exhibit significant distortions due to long Cu-O [2.217(3) Å for (1) and 2.179 (1) for (2)] and Cu-N [2.631(2) Å for (1) and 2.714(1) Å for (2)] bonds. This distortion if further shown by the O-Cu-N bond angles [147.71(8) o for (1) and 153.40(5) o for (2)]. The elemental analyses further support the structural details unveiled by the single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The infrared spectra shows the acetate vibrational frequencies at 1587 cm-1,1428 cm-1, 1314 cm-1 for (1) and 1571 cm-1, 1441 cm-1, 1319c m-1 for (2) and the perchlo-rate bands at 1059 cm-1, 720 cm-1 (1) and 1080 cm-1,768 cm-1 (2). The broad d-d bands for the copper ion at 14,514 cm-1(1) and 14,535 cm-1(2) support the adoption of square pyramid geometries. The magnetic moments for the two complexes are 1.83 B.M for (1) and 1.72 B.M for (2). The peak to peak values of the two complexes show that the electrode reactions are quasi-reversibile with ΔEp = 0.023V (1) and 0.025V for (2). In both structures, there are π-π intermolecular interactions in addition to hydrogen bonding between the units.
