Aims: This study aimed to assess the female circumcision (FC) experiences, healthcare needs, and access to health services of foreign university students who are victims of female genital mutilation and studying in Turkey. Methods: This descriptive qualitative study was conducted in the Faculty of Health Science in a state university in Turkey from December 2021 to January 2022. Eight students who had been subjected to FC participated in this study. Data were collected by conducting in‐depth, semistructured online interviews and using a pilot‐tested interview guide. The data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Results: Four themes emerged: "reasons for performing FC, 'health effects of FC,' 'psychological problems linked to FC,' and 'FC survivors' access to health services.'" Students stated that they exposed to this practice because of limiting their womanhood, they experienced problems, such as pelvic pain, infection, loss of sexuality, fear of pregnancy and birth, and they had healthcare needs due to FC but face some barriers. Conclusions: FC negatively affects women's health and has specific healthcare needs. Studying in a different country can be turned into an opportunity to solve the health problems they experience. For this, the right approach with knowledgeable and culturally sensitive health professionals can change stereotypes towards practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Conducting research studies with vulnerable populations on sensitive topics such as adolescent pregnancy can be challenging depending on methodological approaches and ethical issues that may arise before, during, and after data collection. This methodological paper was developed based on experiences and lessons learned from a critical ethnographic study conducted to determine and understand the cultural and personal meaning of unintended adolescent pregnancy in the Rwandan context and to explore the perceived consequences and management of unintended adolescent pregnancy with and for single adolescent mothers. The purpose of this methodological paper is to discuss methodological and ethical challenges encountered while conducting this research, as well as various approaches used to overcome these challenges, and to provide guidance to researchers interested in conducting research about similar or other sensitive topics. Future researchers facing similar challenges should prioritize community engagement strategies, such as building strong relationships with gatekeepers and leaders, to facilitate access to potential participants. Additionally, researchers should engage in continuous ethical reflection and adaptation throughout the study, adjusting strategies if necessary to ensure the well-being and autonomy of participants. As a result of the practical and methodological strategies provided in this reflective paper, researchers could be able to navigate practical, methodological, and ethical challenges effectively while conducting sensitive studies on topics such as adolescent pregnancy. Background and Objective: As the visibility and acceptance of athlete-mothers increase, so does the number of women athletes considering parenthood. Yet, many athletes struggle with the decision to become a parent while competing at the elite level due to the significant changes and uncertainties that have been reported by pregnant and parenting athletes. The experiences of women athletes considering parenthood are under-represented in the vast sport literature but are necessary for developing evidenced-based policies and practices that can support women's equitable participation in high-performance sport contexts. Thus, the purpose of this qualitative study was to describe the experiences of elite women athletes that are considering parenthood. Methods: Participants were ten elite North American athletes (29–36 years) who are considering becoming parents in the next 5 years. Each participant self-identified as a woman and competed at the highest level in their respective sport. Data were generated via one-on-one semi-structured interviews that were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed through a process of content analysis. Results: The experiences of elite women athletes considering parenthood are represented by five themes: (a) calls for essential mandates and leadership, (b) how do you support yourself?, (c) hesitation of body changes, (d) age inequities, and (e) being proactive about reproductive health. Such findings support an in-depth understanding of gender-specific stressors that limit women's equitable participation in high-performance contexts. Conclusion: This research is grounded in the voices of elite women athletes and identifies actionable steps necessary for research and culture change. Objectives: Antenatal education (ANE) is part of National Health Service (NHS) care and is recommended by The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to increase birth preparedness and help pregnant women/birthing people develop coping strategies for labour and birth. We aimed to understand antenatal educator views about how current ANE supports preparedness for childbirth, including coping strategy development with the aim of identifying targets for improvement. Methods: A United Kingdom wide, cross-sectional online survey was conducted between October 2019 and May 2020. Antenatal educators including NHS midwives and private providers were purposively sampled. Counts and percentages were calculated for closed responses and thematic analysis used for open text responses. Results: Ninety-nine participants responded, 62% of these did not believe that ANE prepared women for labour and birth. They identified practical barriers to accessing ANE, particularly for marginalised groups, including financial and language barriers. Educators believe class content is medically focused, and teaching is of variable quality with some midwives being ill-prepared to deliver antenatal education. 55% of antenatal educators believe the opportunity to develop coping strategies varies between location and educators and only those women who can pay for non-NHS classes are able to access all the coping strategies that can support them with labour and birth. Conclusions for Practice: Antenatal educators believe current NHS ANE does not adequately prepare women for labour and birth, leading to disparities in birth preparedness for those who cannot access non-NHS classes. To reduce this healthcare inequality, NHS classes need to be standardised, with training for midwives in delivering ANE enhanced. Significance: What is Already Known on this Subject?: There is no detailed national guidance about the content or quantity of antenatal education that should be delivered by the NHS to patients and, how coping strategies are developed within these sessions is unknown. What this Study Adds?: Antenatal educators believe that quality of antenatal education needs to be improved. Access to coping strategies for labour and birth is hindered by the type of class, the educator's approach and socioeconomic status. This study can be used to support an argument for addressing the inequality in access to antenatal preparation, whilst better preparing all women through higher quality of antenatal education provision in the NHS. Genetic relatedness figures heavily in contemporary ethical debates on egg freezing, although the arguments lack empirical‐based evidence. Rather than adding another theoretical view on the moral relevance of genetic connections, this paper instead proposes an empirically grounded perspective based on two independent qualitative interview‐based studies conducted in Belgium and France. Three themes emerge from our empirical data: (1) prioritizing family building; (2) centering the gestational experience of motherhood; and (3) identifying the complexities and limitations of adoption. These themes suggest that the relationship between egg freezing, genetics, biological motherhood, and adoption is highly complex and less straightforward than what is often assumed in the egg freezing debate. Our study provides more detailed insights into women's ambivalent experiences regarding those reproductive options. We discuss the ethical implications of our empirical findings and hold that pursuing genetic desire is not necessarily the main moral reason why women freeze their eggs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To describe changes in attitudes and expectations of labor over the previous six decades, comparing the Iraqi generation who labored at home without medical assistance with their descendants. Study Design: We used semi‐structured telephone interviews with 22 women across three generations of one extended family living and giving birth in Iraq between the 1950s and the 2010s. Qualitative data were analyzed thematically using open, axial, and selective coding. Results: Each generation experienced a paradigm shift in childbirth, from exclusive home births to hospital‐directed maternity care, to a trend that favors planned cesarean birth, driven by generation‐specific changes in outlook. Emerging themes included social influences, changing technology, and medical professionals' recommendations; all of these affected attitudes toward childbirth and pregnancy. There were generational disconnects in perceptions concerning the reasons childbirth has changed over the past 60 years, with the youngest generation citing wider pressures regarding body image and marital relationships as two of the factors affecting preferences in childbirth options. Conclusions: Societal changes and availability of healthcare services affect women's choices and experiences of childbirth. To be successful, efforts to improve women's experiences in labor, as well as maternal and neonatal outcomes, must consider these wider sociocultural issues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/Aims: Cultural factors significantly impact maternal mortality during pregnancy and birth, and cultural norms can affect pregnancy, labour and care-seeking behavior. This study explored local cultural perspectives of birth preparedness in a rural area of Java, Indonesia. Methods: This descriptive qualitative study used individual semi-structured interviews with 16 purposively selected participants, including 10 pregnant women, two community midwives, two pregnant women's parents and two health cadres. Data were analysed thematically. Results: Three primary themes were found: the meaning of pregnancy in the sociocultural context, the meaning of childbirth and cultural values in pregnancy. Conclusions: Sociocultural factors have a significant impact on pregnancy and childbirth in rural Indonesian areas, and pregnant women may be unprepared for birth. It is essential to create a culturally appropriate intervention model for childbirth readiness that pregnant women and their families can easily understand. Background/Aims: Molar pregnancy is a rare complication of pregnancy. Patients face surgery, human chorionic gonadotropin monitoring and potentially systemic treatment, resulting in unique support needs. This study's aim was to explore the impacts of gestational trophoblastic disease on embodied and emotional experience. Methods: This qualitative study considered stories of molar pregnancy from 20 women in the UK, US, Canada and Australia. These were drawn from 18 publicly available online blogs and eight semi-structured interviews, and analysed thematically. Results: Three themes were developed: 'loss', describing women's responses to their pregnancy ending; 'isolation', comprising 'rarity', 'lack of awareness' and support seeking; and 'alienation', capturing the unfamiliarity of diagnosis, 'failure' and barriers to 'moving forward'. Conclusions: Experiences are shaped by wider narratives of 'typical' pregnancy. Patient care requires an individualised and responsive approach, and non-specialist practitioners should feel confident in discussing molar pregnancy and have access to up-to-date guidance. A woman's choice to remain childfree is often met with disapproving comments. This article focuses on pronatalism and the social discourse that promotes and maintains motherhood as the preferred choice for women in a country that has achieved high levels of gender equality. Critical discourse analysis is applied to 30 qualitative interviews with women, trans, and non-binary people in Iceland, who are either childfree by choice or who regret motherhood. The results indicate that despite neoliberalism advocating a woman's right to freedom of choice, pronatalist ideologies continue to undermine reproductive self-determination, promoting motherhood as the right choice. Unsolicited comments act as powerful mechanisms that serve to shame those who can bear children into becoming mothers or facing regret yet simultaneously condemn women who regret motherhood. Women who choose to remain childfree privately challenge unwanted comments by overturning pronatalist discourses, whereas those who regret their choice to become mothers struggle to express their feelings for fear of being judged and branded as failures. Background: Adolescents in Ghana are vulnerable to unequal power relations at the personal, community and structural levels which in turn limits their opportunities in access to critical sexual and reproductive health information and services. There is therefore high unmet need for sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information and services and the Bono East region typifies this situation, recording some of the poorest SRHR outcomes among adolescents. We, therefore, aimed to investigate the SRH needs (unmet), behaviors and utilization of SRH services among adolescents in the Bono East region. Methods: Using a maximum variation sampling approach, this qualitative study conducted in-depth interviews and focused group discussions with adolescent boys and girls, parents, community leaders, and healthcare providers. Results: Our findings are presented under two broad categories: major SRHR concerns of adolescents, and perspectives about that influences adolescents' utilization of SRHR services. Under the major SRHR need of adolescents, the following themes emerged: information and services on pregnancy prevention, menstrual hygiene management, availability of comprehensive abortion care services, and attitudes towards adolescent pregnancy. The perspectives about the factors that influence adolescent children were discussed at multiple levels: individual/personal. interpersonal and community/societal. At the individual level, limited understanding of adolescence/puberty, desire of adolescents to belong and misperceptions about contraceptives. At the interpersonal level, issues relating to technical capacity needs of service providers, disrespect exhibited by service providers, and parental failure were identified as influential factors. Then at the community/societal level, we identified structural constraints and compromised social safety concerns in accessing contraceptives and services. Conclusion: In conclusion, the findings from this study offer valuable insights into the complex landscape of adolescent sexual and reproductive health in the Bono East region. The implications for policy and practice are manifold, ranging from comprehensive education to addressing menstrual hygiene, involving parents, training healthcare providers, and promoting respectful care. Context: The United States' response to COVID‐19 created a policy, economic, and healthcare provision environment that had implications for the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) of racialized and minoritized communities. Perspectives from heterogenous immigrant communities in New York City, the pandemic epicenter in the United States (US), provides a glimpse into how restrictive social policy environments shape contraception, abortion, pregnancy preferences, and other aspects of SRH for marginalized immigrant communities. Methods: We conducted in‐depth interviews in 2020 and 2021 with 44 cisgender immigrant women from different national origins and 19 direct service providers for immigrant communities in New York City to explore how immigrants were forced to adapt their SRH preferences and behaviors to the structural barriers of the COVID‐19 pandemic. We coded and analyzed the interviews using a constant comparative approach. Results: Pandemic‐related fears and structural barriers to healthcare access shaped shifts in contraceptive use and preferences among our participants. Immigrant women weighed their concerns for health and safety and the potential of facing discrimination as part of their contraceptive preferences. Immigrants also described shifts in their pregnancy preferences as rooted in concerns for their health and safety and economic constraints unique to immigrant communities. Conclusion: Understanding how immigrant women's SRH shifted in response to the structural and policy constraints of the COVID‐19 pandemic can reveal how historically marginalized communities will be impacted by an increasingly restrictive reproductive health and immigration policy landscape. Rationale: Body image undergoes significant changes during pregnancy, marking a pivotal phase in a woman's life. Aim and Objective: This study aimed to explore the body image perceptions of primiparous pregnant women during their third trimester. Methods: Employing a qualitative research approach grounded in phenomenology, the study involved interviews to explore the experiences of primiparous pregnant women in their third trimester. The interviews were conducted via an online platform, with a sample group of 13 participants chosen through purposive sampling. Data analysis followed a content analysis approach, with the information being transferred to MAXQDA Analytics Pro Qualitative Data Analysis Programme for coding. The study adhered to the reporting guidelines outlined in the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) checklist. Results: Systematic analysis of the interview transcripts led to the identification of three main themes under the overarching framework of body image experiences among primiparous pregnant women during the third trimester: Physical Changes, Mental Changes, and Behavioural and Social Changes. Among the identified themes, pregnant women demonstrated a relatively lower level of discourse regarding Physical Changes, in contrast to a significant emphasis on Mental Changes. Within the latter theme, pregnant women exhibited significant dissatisfaction with their pregnancy experiences significantly. Background: There has been limited research on the lasting impact of giving birth on both mothers and infants. This study aimed to investigate women's memories of their childbirth experience 4 months and 4 years after giving birth. Additionally, it aimed to examine how the childbirth experience is linked to women's mental health, sexual satisfaction, exclusive breastfeeding, and the type of subsequent birth. Methods: In this prospective cohort study, a total of 580 women giving birth in Tabriz hospitals in 2018 were followed up for 4 years. The data were collected using a childbirth experience questionnaire, a mental health inventory, and a sexual satisfaction scale for women, and were analyzed by a Pearson correlation test, an independent samples t-test, and a general linear model. Results: The total scores of the childbirth experience in two short-term (4 months) and long-term (4 years) time points following the birth had a significant and strong correlation with each other (r =.51; p <.001). After adjusting for the effects of socio-demographic and obstetric characteristics, sexual satisfaction had significant relationships with childbirth experience (p <.001) and postpartum complications (p <.001). In addition, mental health had significant relationships with childbirth experience (p <.001), postpartum complications (p <.001), and low income (p =.004). Conclusions: Even 4 years after giving birth, women have a clear recall of their childbirth experience. This experience has a significant association with long-term outcomes such as sexual satisfaction, mental health, exclusive breastfeeding, and subsequent birth type. Plain Language Summary: Childbearing is a significant event in a mother's life. Women often remember the births of their babies distinctly, even after many years. However, some mothers do not perceive this life event as a positive one. Factors affecting this perception are multidimensional and may include demographic variables and obstetric events (e.g., immediate postpartum complications like hemorrhage), which contribute to negative childbirth experiences. It's important to note that women who feel unsupported or lack control during labour and childbirth are more likely to have negative birth experiences. Although a birth experience is influenced by various factors, this can have serious consequences, such as mental health problems, disrupted mother-infant bonding, and reluctance to have subsequent pregnancies or initiate or continue breastfeeding. Therefore, this study mainly aimed to investigate women's recollection of their childbirth experience at 4 months and 4 years after giving birth, as well as examine the correlation of childbirth experience with women's mental health, sexual satisfaction, exclusive breastfeeding, inclination to have children, and the type of next birth 4 years after the childbirth. Some English‐speaking Caribbean nations continue to maintain large residential homes for children and youth who need out‐of‐home care. My doctoral study with alumni from a number of these homes reported that their overall experiences were positive. However, transition and discharge were less favourable, with women suffering more hardships than men. These hardships included homelessness, which often led to sexual exploitation for women. A number of young women became pregnant within a year of discharge from the home (which normally happened at the age of 16 or 18). An unplanned pregnancy can have immediate and lasting consequences for a young woman's health, education, and income‐earning potential. It often alters the course of her entire life. This study provides information from a sample of 15 young adult women in Trinidad and Tobago on the risk factor of living in a residential care facility and unplanned teenage pregnancy. Purpose This study aimed to determine the psychology of pregnant women in a crisis that resulted in emergency admission to the maternal fetal intensive care unit (MFICU) under restricted family visitation owing to the spread of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods This qualitative descriptive study included four pregnant women who were hospitalized within one month of being transferred to a general obstetric ward from the MFICU under restricted family visitation. Data were collected through semi-constructive interviews. Results The psychology of pregnant women was analyzed per Aguilera's problem-solving crisis model and can be summarized into eight categories. Pregnant women felt happy to be pregnant despite the COVID-19 pandemic. However, they were in a state of imbalance and feeling seriously ill due to emergency MFICU admission, which they associated with ICU. Furthermore, they felt an urgent need to restore their equilibrium by meeting their families and share their child's growth. However, they gradually came to a realistic perception that hospitalization was necessary to protect children. Further, they maintained the same family relationships they had before their hospitalization even under visitation restrictions. In addition, these women reported that nonfamily interactions were encouraging during their hospitalization. Moreover, they had an appropriate coping mechanism to reconcile their desire to visit their families. Hence, they reached a state of equilibrium recovery in which they flexibly adapted to the special care environment. Conclusion Pregnant women who were urgently admitted to the MFICU under restricted family visitation due to the COVID-19 pandemic always desired to share their child's growth with their families. However, they gradually responded positively to the fact that hospitalization was necessary to protect their children. Moreover, the pregnant women used information and communication technology to promptly share the progress of their pregnancies and growth of their children with their families. Women who gave birth in the spring and summer of 2020 contended with a host of challenging factors. In addition to facing pregnancy, labor, and delivery during an emerging global pandemic, women grappled with health care restrictions that altered their birth experience. To explore how women made sense of their birth during COVID-19, we analyzed written narratives from 71 women who gave birth in the United States from March to July 2020. Based on tenets of communicated narrative sense-making, the themes that emerged from our data suggest that women framed the role of the pandemic as either completely overshadowing their birth experience or as an inconvenience. Women also wrote about threats to their agency as patients, mothers, and caregivers, as well as the evolving emotional toll of the pandemic that often prompted feelings of fear and sadness, along with self-identified anxiety and depression. We discuss these findings in light of the literature on birth stories as essential sites of narrative sense-making for women and their families. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to describe the impact of COVID-19 on fatherhood experiences during pregnancy. A semi-structured interview guide was developed to collect qualitative data from fathers about their experiences in pregnancy and prenatal care, how they communicated with providers, strategies for information seeking, and social support they received during the pregnancy. One-time, virtual interviews were conducted via Zoom with fathers that were either expecting a baby or fathers who had a baby after March 2020 and were 18 years or older. Thematic analysis was used to identify themes that highlighted the fatherhood experience. In total, 34 interviews with new or expectant fathers were completed. Two central themes that highlight the experiences of fathers: missed opportunities to shift toward family-centered care and inequity in the parent dyad during pregnancy. Additional supporting themes included: limited patient-provider relationship, lack of telemedicine use, inadequate uncertainty management for parents, unidirectional information sharing between parents, and limited opportunities for achieving role attainment during pregnancy. The COVID-19 pandemic created a decision point for prenatal care. Instead of focusing on family-centered practices, prenatal care exclusively centered on the mother and fetus, resulting in problematic experiences for fathers including limited access to information about the pregnancy and health of the mother and fetus, heightened stress related to COVID-19 safety requirements, and few opportunities to attain their role as a father. Prenatal care should actively seek robust strategies to improve family-centered care practices that will withstand the next public health emergency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: In the United States, the incidence of substance misuse among pregnant women has been steadily increasing. While pregnant women with substance use disorder (SUD) are in critical need of support during the prenatal period, they enter prenatal care stigmatized and facing the possibility of punitive responses. Little research has been done about how women with SUDs themselves experience pregnancy and the transition to motherhood. The aim of this study was to examine women's internal experiences of pregnancy in the context of SUD. Methods: Semi‐structured interviews were conducted with n = 19 postpartum women with SUD. Data were analyzed using a semantic, thematic approach. Results: Participants expressed their thoughts and experiences about their pregnancies in four main themes: (1) fear of harming the baby; (2) fear about child welfare involvement; (3) guilt informed by recovery stage; and (4) mixed feelings about pregnancy amidst complicated circumstances. The women expressed fear about their children's well‐being, coupled with motivation to protect their child and the need for clear medical information. Their expressions of guilt depended on the severity of their SUD and their stage in recovery during their pregnancy. Women entered prenatal care with mixed emotions about their pregnancy, such as guilt and excitement, in the midst of complicated life circumstances. Conclusions: These findings suggest a complexity of internal experiences for pregnant women with SUDs. Improving diet and dietary behaviour of men and women before pregnancy has the potential to benefit both their current and long-term health and the health of their children. Little is known, however, about adults' perception of diet's role in prepregnancy health. This study aimed to explore the state of knowledge and awareness of preconception nutritional health in adults within the fertile age range and what they perceived could motivate healthy eating using the self-determination theory as a theoretical framework. We analysed 33 short exploratory interviews with men (n = 18) and women (n = 15) aged 18-45 years. Participants were grab sampled from three different public locations in the southern part of Norway. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim in 2020 and analysed using a thematic analysis with a semantic approach in 2022. The findings suggest that adults within the fertile age range are not intrinsically motivated to eat healthily, but when they do, it is because eating healthily often aligns with other goals consistent with their values, that is, getting fit or looking good. They possess some basic knowledge of healthy behaviours during pregnancy but are generally unaware of the importance of preconception health and nutrition. There is a need to increase awareness of the impact of preconception health on the health of this and future generations. Improved nutritional education on the significance of diet before conception might facilitate optimal conditions for conceiving and for pregnancy in the adult population within fertile age range. We integrated safer conception care into a Ugandan HIV clinic. People with HIV (PWH), or partnered with a PWH, and desiring children were eligible for the Healthy Families Clinic Program. Clients completed quarterly safer conception counselling visits and questionnaires to provide information around method preferences and outcomes (partner pregnancy, partner seroconversion). We used clinic level data to evaluate longitudinal viral suppression among PWH. Between November 2016 and January 2020, 361 clients (53% men) accessed services. 75% were PWH (51% women, 96% men): 99% were on antiretroviral therapy (ART) and most reported HIV-sero-different partnerships (97%). Frequently selected safer conception methods included ART (86%), timed condomless sex (74%), and PrEP (40%) with important differences by HIV-serostatus and gender. 22.5% reported pregnancy. Most (97%) PWH were virally suppressed at enrolment and 81% of non-virally suppressed PWH were virally suppressed at 15 months. Two HIV-negative clients (2%) had HIV seroconversion. There is demand for safer conception care in a public sector HIV-clinic in Uganda. Men and women have unique safer conception care preferences. Millions of people face unintended pregnancy each year, including thousands who are living with a mental health disorder, and must decide to terminate the pregnancy, become a parent, or place a child for adoption. While people of various genders, such as nonbinary people and transgender men, also face pregnancy, the current study highlighted the perspectives of women in particular, seeking to understand what unique circumstances may predict their pregnancy decision making in the context of mental health concerns. A sample of 327 women of reproductive age who self-identified as having a mental health condition were asked to consider the hypothetical situation of an unintended pregnancy and completed measures of psychological distress, parenting self-efficacy, and likelihood of choosing abortion. Qualitative data was transformed into two composite lay belief variables (perceived harm from pregnancy and mental health resilience) for inclusion in the model. Indirect effects revealed that psychological distress was related to higher likelihood of choosing an abortion through greater perceived harm from pregnancy and to lower likelihood of choosing an abortion through greater mental health resilience and higher parenting self-efficacy. BACKGROUND: Around one-third of women experience childbirth trauma, with 3%--15% developing postpartum posttraumatic stress disorder (PP-PTSD). AIM: Explore birth satisfaction and health perception across two groups of postnatal women with either high or low trauma scores. METHOD: Forty postnatal women were divided into groups dependent upon Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist (PCL-5) scores: high severity (n = 20; range 25-57) or low severity (n = 20; range 0-7). Semi-structured interviews explored women's childbirth experiences related to birth satisfaction and reports of postnatal health. Thematic analysis was performed. FINDINGS: Narrative content differed appreciably between high (A) and low (B) scoring groups. Group A narratives were more negative (A1: Overall, a negative recall), referencing lack of autonomy, support, or being heard (A2: Missing needs) and negative influences (A3: Disrupting my bubble). Group B recalled more birth satisfaction (B1: Mostly positive recall) associated with (B2: Autonomy; B3: Being cared for; B4: Intuition, instinct, and primal force). Group A narratives focused strongly on mental health (A4: Reduced awareness; A6: Experiencing PTSD; A7: Needing help), with some focus on physical health (A5: How I feel physically); Group B spoke less about health (B5: My health). DISCUSSION: High-quality psychological care during labor, with continuity, choice, support, and control, alongside postnatal health follow-up may improve birth satisfaction and reduce the incidence of PP-PTSD. CONCLUSION: To increase birth satisfaction and reduce trauma, maternity care providers must be supported to prioritize high-quality psychological care to women during labor, providing choice, control, and continuity within trusting relationships. Trusting relationships are key to ongoing conversations regarding health and seeking/receiving help. Introduction: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) continues to be the cause of mother and child deaths and morbidity. Prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) therapies have been demonstrated to be useful in lowering the number of children infected throughout pregnancy, intra-partum, and during nursing period. This qualitative study investigates the knowledge and perspectives of pregnant women regarding HIV, experience of health workers in national PMTCT program, and barriers to PMTCT in Malang district. Material and methods: 18 women and 10 key informants were interviewed in-depth at the local antenatal clinic and community health center in Malang district. Results: There is still a lack of knowledge about HIV and PMTCT among women who are infected with the virus. When a test is conducted close to the moment of birth, there were several reports of non-consensual testing. Inadequate counseling can be caused by a lack of confidentiality, insufficient training of health workers, a lack of time, and perceptions of occupational dangers. Inadequate counseling can be caused by any of these factors. HIV stigma, discrimination, and worries of partnership breakup are some of the demand-side hurdles to PMTCT, which include a lack of HIV and PMTCT awareness. Conclusions: Socio-cultural and practical issues, such as HIV testing without permission, are the major barriers to strengthening PMTCT services. Prenatal testing and counseling must be provided in a manner that is appropriate for local population. Additional research is needed to investigate people's traditional beliefs regarding HIV. Aims and objectives: To explore women's emotional responses throughout the process of terminating a pregnancy for medical reasons. Background: Making the choice to terminate a desired pregnancy for medical reasons has a negative impact on women's health, as it is a distressing process that involves making hard decisions and readjusting one's expectations of an idealised pregnancy. Methods: A qualitative phenomenological study was conducted following the COREQ checklist. Fifteen semi‐structured interviews and two focus groups were conducted with women who had terminated their pregnancies for medical reasons, previous to and during the COVID‐19 lockdown. Subsequently, we analysed the content. Results: One main category, emotional journey during the process of terminating the pregnancy, and six subcategories were identified: (I) representation and desire to become a mother, (II) main concerns, (III) impact of the news, (IV) decision‐making, (V) emotional responses before termination for medical reasons and (VI) emotional responses after termination for medical reasons. All contributed to understanding the specificities of the different phases that make up the emotional journey of terminating a pregnancy for medical reasons. Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that there are a number of predominant emotions that professionals need to be aware of in order to help women work through them and lessen the impact of pregnancy termination on their mental health. COVID‐19 had different connotations depending on the women's experiences. Relevance to clinical practice: Our results highlight how important the role of healthcare staff is in caring for these women and their partners, which involves recognising their emotions throughout the process. Our results also underline how useful it is to conduct qualitative studies in this context, since they constitute a set of activities and interventions that result in the administration of nursing care in itself. Background: Preterm birth (PTB) is a global health epidemic, sub-Saharan Africa is severely impacted due to its limited healthcare resources. Pregnancy knowledge, cultural beliefs and practices play a role in the identification of risk and management of PTB. This study explored knowledge, understandings, cultural beliefs and attitudes to pregnancy and PTB, as well as cultural considerations for the introduction of an intravaginal device which could be used to identify PTB risk. Methods: Qualitative research was conducted in South Africa and Kenya. In-depth interviews were conducted using semi-structured guides with women with a history of PTB (n = 10), healthcare providers (n = 16) and health systems experts (n = 10); and 26 focus group discussions with pregnant women seeking antenatal care (n = 132) and community male partners/fathers (n = 54). Interviews/discussions were transcribed, translated, and analysed thematically. Results: Pregnancy knowledge, especially for first time pregnancies was poor, with many reporting late entry to antenatal care. Knowledge about PTB was understood in terms of gestational age, weight or small size of baby, with concerns about long term health and stigma. Various risk factors for PTB were described, including those related to traditions and beliefs of witchcraft/curses. Cultural practices, such as the use of traditional medicines and pica, and religion and its impact on health seeking behaviour were also viewed as risk factors. Although insertion of intravaginal devices was not widely acceptable in traditional communities, especially during pregnancy, it was felt that the use of one to detect risk of PTB would be accepted if proven effective in reducing PTB risk. Conclusions: Various culturally-informed beliefs exist which explain understandings of and attitudes toward pregnancy, pregnancy risk, and PTB. An inclusive exploratory process is critical to facilitate an understanding of the beliefs and traditions which could impact the introduction and design of a product to detect the risk of PTB. Background/Aims: Adolescent pregnancy is a significant health problem that can lead to adverse effects for the health of both adolescent mothers and their babies. Little is known about adolescent pregnancy from the perspective of adolescents, especially in developing countries, including Iran. The present study's aim was to explore Iranian adolescent women's perspectives of pregnancy. Methods: This study was a thematic analysis conducted from November 2018 to October 2019 in north Iran. Data were collected through 24 unstructured, face-to-face in depth interviews which were transcribed and analysed using coding, constant comparison and memo writing. Results: The experiences were categorised into five themes: 'skeptical confronting pregnancy', 'intelligent self-care', 'embracing the pregnancy', 'effective support from others' and 'mixed perceptions of pregnancy'. Conclusions: This study could improve healthcare professionals' adaptation of care for pregnant adolescent women and inspire them to tailor their care specifically to adolescents' needs. The aim of this research was to explore the experiences of a sample of disabled women about problems with romantic relationships/sexual life. For the study, eight disabled women between the ages of 20 and 38 years were contacted. One theme to emerge was "sexuality as taboo" related to the family. It also seemed that these taboos led to women not receiving health information during adolescence. A second theme to emerge was "forbidden before marriage", which means that women with disabilities were prevented from dating and having sexual intercourse before marriage. A third theme to emerge was "disabled people are targets of sexual abuse" related to the overprotection of disabled women by their families. The final theme was "ableism is the biggest obstacle to the romantic/sexual relationships of disabled women". Background: Adolescent maternal healthcare utilisation is low in Nigeria, and little is understood about the pregnancy experiences and drivers of maternal healthcare utilisation among of adolescent girls. This study investigated the pregnancy experiences and maternal healthcare utilisation among adolescent mothers across Nigeria. Methods: The study used the qualitative design. Urban and rural communities in Ondo, Imo and Katsina states were selected as research sites. Fifty-five in-depth interviews were conducted with adolescent girls who were currently pregnant or had given birth to a child recently, and nineteen in-depth interviews were conducted with older women who were either mothers or guardians of adolescent mothers. Additionally, key informant interviews were conducted with five female community leaders and six senior health workers. The interviews were transcribed, and resulting textual data were analysed via framework thematic analysis using a semantic and deductive approach, with the aid of NVivo software. Results: The findings showed that the majority of unmarried participants had unintended pregnancies and stigma against pregnant adolescents was common. Social and financial support from family members, maternal support and influence, as well as healthcare preferences shaped by cultural and religious norms were the major drivers of maternal healthcare use among adolescent mothers, and the choice of their healthcare providers. Conclusions: Interventions to support adolescent mothers and increase maternal healthcare utilisation among them must focus on ensuring the provision of social and financial support for adolescent mothers, and should be culturally sensitive. Aims: The aim of the study was to examine how female sex worker's motivations, desires, intentions and behaviours towards childbearing and childbearing avoidance inform their contraceptive decision‐making. We explored the influence of social determinants of health in the domains of social context (sexual partners and experiences of violence), healthcare access, economic instability on the contraceptive decision‐making process. Design: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study informed by Miller's Theory of Childbearing Motivations, Desires and Intentions through the lens of social determinants of health. Methods: Participants were recruited from a parent study, EMERALD, in July–September, 2020. Data were collected from 22 female sex workers ages 18–49 using semi‐structured 45 to 60‐min audio‐recorded interviews and transcribed verbatim. Theory guided the development of the study's interview guide and thematic analytic strategy. Results: Five themes emerged related to contraceptive decision‐making: Motivations (value of fatherhood), Desires (relationships with love), Intentions and Behaviours (drugs overpower everything, contraceptive strategies and having children means being a protector). Women's contraceptive decision‐making often included intentions to use contraception. However, social determinants such relationships with clients and intimate partners, interpersonal violence and challenges accessing traditional health care offering contraceptive services often interfered with these intentions and influenced contraceptive behaviours. Conclusion: Women's contraceptive decision‐making process included well‐informed desires related to childbearing and contraceptive use. However, social determinants across domains of health interfered with autonomous contraceptive decision‐making. More effort is needed to examine the influence of social determinants on the reproductive health of this population. Impact: Findings from this study build on existing research that examines social determinants impacting reproductive health among female sex workers. Existing theoretical frameworks may not fully capture the influence constrained reproductive autonomy has on contraceptive decision‐making. Future studies examining interpersonal and structural barriers to contraception are warranted. Obesity and its concomitant comorbidities have a myriad of detrimental effects on health, fertility, and quality of life. Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for inducing weight loss and reduction of obesity-related comorbidities including subfertility. The aim of this study was to explore the expectations and experiences of women with a desire to have children as a motivation for undergoing bariatric surgery. An inductive qualitative design was used. Fourteen women were interviewed, and transcriptions were analysed with thematic analysis. Two themes emerged: (i) Motherhood and Femininity and (ii) A Normal Life. Participants found no other solution than to seek bariatric surgery to be able to become pregnant and carry a child to term. Coping physically with pregnancy and being an active mother were important factors. Overall, postoperative expectations were met, and the women experienced the effects of normalised sex hormone levels, were more physically mobile, and were released from the previous social hindrances that obesity caused them. This study has clinical implications for providing support and information to women with subfertility considering bariatric surgery and to better understand their experiences of life after bariatric surgery. Preconception care (PC) is relatively new area of practice. While the volume and quality of PC activities depend on local settings, the awareness of women is critical for the successful promotion of PC services. The aim of this study was to examine the preconception-health-related attitudes and experiences of Bulgarian women of reproductive age. A qualitative study conducted among 20 women aged 18 to 49 years was performed between May and July 2022. Two focus groups were used with mixed samples of nulligravida, pregnant, and postpartum women. The participants thought that the Internet and their obstetrician-gynecologist were the only places where they could learn about getting pregnant. Only two of them discussed their PC plans with their physicians. Women pointed out that general practitioners (GPs) need to be more proactive in promoting PC. All respondents outlined the need for a web-based educational platform that could serve as a primary source of health information for future families. The role and functions of GPs in the continuum of PC should be reconsidered. We recommend targeted educational measures for all stakeholders, including women and GPs. In this regard, an easily accessible, knowledge-based web platform could enhance Bulgarian women's awareness and perceptions of PC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 2016, China enacted its two‐child policy, further lifted to a three‐child policy in 2021, in response to low birth rates and imbalanced sex ratios resulting from the almost 40‐year one‐child policy. Despite this, China's birthrate is at a historic low as fewer parents are having children. Now more than ever, inductive explorations are needed to understand what motivates Chinese parents to have first and second children in the post‐one‐child policy era, particularly explorations that situate individual decision‐making within the larger social context. Individual and relational choices occur in larger sociopolitical contexts. Understanding these "personal" actions involves considering how micro and macro processes inform each other. In this study, we elicited qualitative responses from Chinese mothers (N = 117) with two children in early childhood (firstborn ≤8 years old) from Liao Ning province. Most mothers were well educated, employed, and married to children's fathers. Using inductive thematic analysis procedures, we coded qualitative responses about the factors that motivated mothers to have first and second children. Our data revealed that (a) mothers expressed different reasons for having firstborns compared to secondborns, and (b) decision‐making occurred against a backdrop of interacting micro‐level and macro‐level influences (e.g., cultural norms, national policy changes). In particular, mothers described the decision to have secondborns as more deliberative than with firstborns, considering long‐term benefits siblinghood and shared demands of elderly caregiving. If efforts to stimulate the national birthrate are likely to succeed, policymakers should consider micro‐level as well as macro‐level factors that shape mothers' childbearing decision‐making. Aims: To explore and describe perceived factors that favour or hinder the challenges faced by mothers with congenital heart disease during pregnancy and motherhood. Design: A secondary qualitative analysis, according to the interpretative phenomenological analysis approach. Methods: A previous study by Flocco et al., 2020 led us to identify that this population share risks, fear, worries and challenges related to pregnancy. To better understand two a priori themes, barriers and facilitators, we adopted The Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research guidelines, and the processes of credibility, transferability and dependability guaranteed the rigour. Results: The perceived barriers that were identified from the twelve semi‐structured interviews were mainly identified in clinical and psychological risks, uncertainty about the future. The main facilitators were identified in positive mental attitude, self‐motivation, trust in support by clinicians and nurses. Conclusion: The study results confirmed two main a priori themes, revealing that CHD women perceive considerable obstacles and figure out facilitators to face the difficulties encountered in their path to become mothers. This study explored women's lived experience of making fertility decisions six years after attending the Fertility Assessment and Counselling (FAC) clinic in Copenhagen, Denmark, which is a personalised fertility awareness intervention. We conducted a qualitative interview study with 24 women who attended the FAC clinic 6 years earlier. Interviews were semi-structured and broadly examined the women's perceptions and experience of the intervention during follow-up. Data was analysed using a phenomenological framework and themes were identified related to women's experience of making fertility decisions after attending the FAC clinic. The overarching theme regarding the women's lived experience of making fertility decisions after attending the FAC clinic was: Fertility decisions were guided by the 'family clock'. There were four themes: (i) Deciding to 'get started' by attending the FAC clinic; (ii) Sense of making informed and empowered decisions; (iii) Influence of partner status on fertility decisions; and (iv) Decisions dictated by circumstance over preference and knowledge. At follow-up, the majority (21 women, 88%) had become parents. More than half of the women said that they had not achieved their desired family size. Consideration of women's 'family clock' is necessary in personalised fertility awareness interventions to enable women to achieve their family goals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although sub-Saharan Africa has the world's highest rates of early pregnancy, there is little awareness of pregnancy and parenting among young people in out-of-home care in this region. Therefore, this study looked into the experiences of pregnancy and parenting among young women who had been in residential care in Ghana and Uganda. We gathered data from ten parenting care leavers in both countries using semi-structured interviews and then analyzed the data from the interviews thematically. The study's findings revealed that the young mothers had minimal sexual and reproductive health education, as well as a lack of sufficient monitoring, which predisposed them to early pregnancy. The young mothers indicated that emotional stress, financial and employment obstacles, as well as stigma, were some challenges they had experienced. They used personal motivation and spirituality as coping mechanisms to deal with their challenges. Training caregivers to deliver sexual and reproductive health information, having practitioners who will offer supervision during the semi-independent phase of leaving care, and providing separate housing for young mothers are some implications for practice emerging from the study. Perception and knowledge of risk factors for pregnancy influence health behaviors during pregnancy and childbirth. We used a descriptive qualitative study to examine the perception and knowledge of risk factors in pregnancy and childbirth in low-income urban women in Ghana. Over the course of three-months, 12 focus group discussions and six individual interviews were conducted with 90 participants selected from six communities in the study area. Data were analyzed using inductive-thematic content analysis. Findings revealed that participants had knowledge of some risk factors, although some had superstitious beliefs. Participants viewed pregnancy as an exciting and unique experience, but also challenging, with a host of medical and psychological risks. Pre-existing medical conditions (e.g., diabetes), lack of physical activity, poverty, poor nutrition, and lack of social support were identified as conditions that could lead to negative pregnancy outcomes. Superstitious beliefs such as exposure to "evil eye" during pregnancy, as well as curses and spells, were also identified as risk factors for pregnancy complications. This research has implications for policies and programs to improve pregnancy outcomes for low-income women in Ghana. Thus, we recommend social and economic support programs as well as health education to change misperceptions about pregnancy risk and to support other efforts being made to improve maternal health outcomes. Background: Although early case studies have indicated that fear of childbirth can predate a woman's first pregnancy, the concept of preconception fear of childbirth is largely unexplored. The few studies reporting on the prevalence of preconception fear of childbirth found higher levels than most prevalence estimates in pregnant populations. However, little is known about women's fear of childbirth before becoming pregnant. The aim of this qualitative study was to give voice to the experiences of this often-neglected group of women. Methods: To address the experiences and needs of women who do not dare become pregnant due to fear of childbirth, we conducted nine qualitative interviews and analyzed these using reflexive thematic analysis. Results: The women perceived childbirth as an extremely risky event and doubted their abilities to cope with it. With increasing age, the fear became more real. It was associated with thoughts of becoming too old to be able to conceive. The women did their best to cope with fear on their own by seeking information, trying not to think about it, and using multiple strategies to avoid becoming pregnant. Despite expressing a strong wish for professional support, they all described very limited opportunities to receive support from maternal care services. They felt abandoned, left on their own in a stressful and constantly ongoing negotiation with themselves, feeling the pressure to decide whether to dare become pregnant or not. Conclusion: In this study, women expressed having experienced fear of childbirth long before a first pregnancy. They felt abandoned as they had to deal with their fear by themselves, without support from maternal care services. The results point to the necessity of an increased awareness of preconception fear of childbirth. We encourage maternal care services to consider their opportunities to support these women. Plain English summary: Many researchers have studied the experiences of pregnant women who are afraid of giving birth. Although it is known that women can fear childbirth long before becoming pregnant, little research has investigated this issue. In this study, we interviewed nine women who wanted to have children but did not dare become pregnant because they were afraid of giving birth. The women perceived childbirth as an extremely risky event and doubted their abilities to cope with it. They tried to cope with their fear by seeking information about pregnancy and childbirth. They also tried not to think about these issues and did what they could to avoid becoming pregnant. The women felt abandoned as they had to deal with their fear on their own. They wanted support from maternal care services, but this was seldom the case. Instead, they felt pressured to decide whether to dare become pregnant or not without support. Here, we want to give voice to the experiences of this often-neglected group of women and make researchers, policy makers, and health care personnel aware of the needs of women who are afraid of giving birth before becoming pregnant. Exploring perinatal women's experience of nonfatal suicidal behaviour (NFSB) could help illuminate the contexts in which perinatal suicide occurs and new ways to conceptualise maternal suicide prevention. Our aim was to explore perinatal women's subjective experience of NFSB in South Africa. Data were collected via in-depth interviews with seven perinatal women hospitalised following NFSB. Thematic analysis showed how poverty and gender norms shape experiences of pregnancy and highlighted the need for eco-systemic interventions for perinatal women in resource scarce environments to increase social support, assist with childcare, improve educational retention, challenge gender norms and increase paternal involvement. Pregnancy can precipitate biographical disruption by disturbing women's view of themselves and their futures. An inability to reconstruct a coherent narrative and re-imagine the future impedes the transition to motherhood and provides a context for suicide. Using the concept of biographical disruption to frame perinatal suicide, could identify novel approaches to suicide prevention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Germany, research on experiences and care pathways of parents continuing pregnancy after a life-limiting fetal diagnosis is scarce. There are several recommendations but few structured programs. We aimed to explore experiences and needs of parents, reconstruct their care pathways, and identify requirements for a perinatal palliative care program. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 11 mothers and 9 fathers and analyzed data using the Saldaña's Coding Method. Codes were organized in templates to reconstruct care pathways. Pathways started with a suspicious finding prompting a referral to prenatal diagnostics. Parents experienced severe emotional distress during prenatal diagnostics due to scarce information, insensitiveness, and a perceived pressure towards abortion. As a result, they overlooked referrals to psychosocial counseling, generating a care gap. Most parents reached the decision to continue pregnancy without professional support. They then chose a trusted midwife or gynecologist as main caregiver during pregnancy. There were no regular referrals to palliative care, which mainly became relevant when the child survived. Our data indicate that a perinatal palliative care program requires early and comprehensive information, sensitivity, and a non-directive approach. Postpartum contraception counseling and method use vary widely among patients who had a preterm birth. We performed this study to explore what issues and concerns individuals with preterm infants requiring intensive care describe as influencing their postpartum contraceptive choices. We conducted a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with participants who gave birth to a singleton preterm infant admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). We explored pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum care, and NICU experiences, as well as future reproductive plans and postpartum contraceptive choices. Two coders used a constant–comparative approach to code transcripts and identify themes. We interviewed 26 participants: 4 (15%) gave birth at less than 26, 6 (23%) at 26 to 27 6/7, 8 (31%) at 28 to 31 6/7, and 8 (31%) at 32 to 36 6/7 weeks of gestation. We identified three main themes related to future pregnancy plans and contraception choice. First, participants frequently described their preterm birth and their infants' NICU hospitalization as traumatic experiences that affected plans for future pregnancies. The loss of control in predicting or preventing a future preterm birth and uncertainty about their premature child's future medical needs resulted in participants wanting to avoid going through the same experience with another child. Second, participants chose contraception based on previous personal experiences, desired method features, and advice from others. Last, having a preterm birth did not result in any ambivalence among those who desired permanent contraception. Preterm birth influences future pregnancy plans. When discussing reproductive goals with patients, clinicians should be aware of potential trauma associated with a premature birth, assess for whether patients want to discuss contraception, and center the conversation around individual needs if patients do desire contraceptive counseling. Objective: Excess gestational weight gain (GWG) is associated with adverse long and short-term outcomes for both woman and child, yet evidence demonstrates pregnant women are frequently not engaging in healthy behaviours linked to appropriate weight gain. The purpose of the current study was to explore women's values and beliefs related to weight, nutrition and physical activity during pregnancy and to describe how these beliefs influence their behaviours. Methods: As part of a larger randomized controlled trial, we conducted 20 focus groups with 66 pregnant women between 16 and 24-weeks gestation using a semi-structured interview guide. Focus groups were recorded and transcribed verbatim and analyzed using a grounded theory approach. Results: Three personal health schemas emerged from the findings which illustrated women's diverging beliefs about their health behaviours in pregnancy. 'Interconnected health' described beliefs regarding the impact their health had on that of their growing baby and awareness of risks associated with inappropriate weight gain. 'Gestational weight gain as an indicator of health' illustrated perceptions regarding how GWG impacted health and the utility of guidelines. Finally, 'Control in pregnancy' described the sense of agency over one's body and health. Conclusions for Practice: Our results showed that health-related behaviours in pregnancy are driven by personal health schemas which are often discordant with clinical evidence. Interventions and health care provider advice aimed at behaviour modification would benefit from first understanding and addressing these schemas. There remain strong social pressures and attitudes in the United States about feminine identity, especially the expectation of conforming to the role of mother. Ideal femininity and being a mother are often intrinsically linked. Childfree women, those women who choose not to become mothers, face limited understanding, appreciation or acceptance to remain in a non-parenting role and are often presumed as less feminine or caring. This qualitative exploratory study of 10 childfree midlife women in a predominantly rural area of a Midwest state examines how reactions and attitudes of others affected self-esteem and feminine identity through a retrospective lens. Primary themes identified: Motherhood, as underscored by social and societal expectations and stigma; Personal Choice; and Feminine Self-Esteem are addressed. The influence of rural settings is also considered in the discussion. Recommendations for practice with older childfree women are provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) face myriad injustices regarding their reproductive and sexual health and rights. Reproductive and sexual health research with YEH often explores condom-use and sexually transmitted infections, potentially contributing to narrow conceptualizations of YEH as "unclean" or in need of disease-screening. A narrative theory perspective was applied to this study, which allowed for the emergence of alternative storylines, or counter-narratives, which attend to manifestations of power and oppression within the lives of marginalized individuals. Qualitative interviews engaged 30 young people (ages 18–21) accessing shelter services. Narrative analyses identified YEHs' documentations of dominant narratives related to structural oppressions, stigma, and numerous dimensions of reproductive and sexual health including how they create, through their resistance, counter-narratives that include their preferred futures. YEH emphasized systemic sources of stigma and outlined their criticisms of the state. Within-group stigma emerged as a noteworthy theme, with YEH showing both empathy and ambivalence towards other YEH, along with internalization of stigmatizing narratives about pregnancy and homelessness. Approaches to service provision that further amplify youths' voices in naming and challenging the many oppressions and stigmas they face should be prioritized. Moreover, policies should be implemented to dismantle the actual root causes of challenges faced by YEH, rather than perpetuating them through measures rooted in interlocking oppressions of discrimination, inequity, and judgment.
