Approximately 20% of acquired brain injury (ABI) survivors experience reduced psychological wellbeing (PWB). Neuropsychological rehabilitation (NPR) is one approach supporting people with ABI to participate meaningfully in activities despite challenges. Although literature supports NPR effectiveness, little is known about change mechanisms. This systematic realist review identifies what NPR programmes have been designed, delivered, and evaluated for people with ABI to improve PWB and/or quality of life (QOL), as well as providing a context-relevant understanding of what NPR includes and how NPR might lead to positive outcomes. A rapid realist review was conducted in three phases: (1) structured retrieval and evidence extraction; (2) stakeholder consultation; (3) analysis and synthesis. Searches were completed, and findings from 35 publications and one stakeholder consultation were synthesized into a refined logic model. Six context-mechanism-outcome chains (CMOCs) were identified. Participants' relationships to internal experiences, and feelings of self-worth, mastery, and connection appeared to be mechanisms that led to improved PWB and QOL. Adaptation and individualized programmes were also key mechanisms to explain successful NPR. Embedding CMOCs into NPR could improve PWB and/or QOL for people with ABI. The logic model will inform ongoing development of a new online, group-based, NPR programme.

Cervical dystonia (CD) is a movement disorder which causes sustained muscle contractions in the neck leading to abnormal postures and repetitive movements. As it is a highly visible condition, people with CD can experience stigma, which may lead to unhelpful coping strategies and increased psychological distress. This study investigated whether adaptive and maladaptive coping strategies mediate the relationship between stigma and psychological outcomes in people with CD. A total of 114 adults with CD completed measures of stigma, coping, health-related quality of life (HRQOL), psychological distress (depression, anxiety, stress), and psychological wellbeing at one time point. Participants' levels of distress were high, compared to the general population. Correlational analyses showed increased stigma and maladaptive coping (e.g. substance use, behavioural disengagement) were both significantly related to increased distress, lower wellbeing and lower HRQOL, whereas higher adaptive coping (e.g. acceptance, humour) was only related to higher wellbeing. In a parallel mediation model, maladaptive coping strategies mediated the relationship between stigma and distress, HRQOL and wellbeing, but adaptive coping strategies did not. These findings suggest that maladaptive coping may play an important role in explaining the relationship between stigma and some aspects of distress and wellbeing in CD. Interventions which focus on reducing different aspects of maladaptive coping may be helpful to improve wellbeing as well as reducing stigma.

Purpose: Children living with thalassemia experience psychological challenges, but despite significant psychosocial burdens, caregivers' psychological wellbeing and quality of life remain understudied, particularly in lower-and-middle-income countries., Design and Method: The current study evaluated these relationships in 100 male and female Pakistani caregivers (23-45 years; 61% female) using Ryff's Psychological Well-Being Scale and the Singapore Caregiver Quality of Life Scale. Caregivers completed questionnaires during regularly scheduled clinic visits for their child., Results: We found that Pakistani caregivers in our sample generally had significantly lower (30-40 points) quality of life than a referent sample of caregivers of older adults (ps < 0.001). Self-acceptance and personal growth were consistently significant predictors across quality of life domains. Further, significant interactions were observed. Female caregivers with less self-acceptance had worse mental health and wellbeing and impact on daily life (p < .05). Male caregivers with less personal growth had worse physical health wellbeing (p < .05)., Conclusions: Our results demonstrate the importance of considering how distinct aspects of psychological wellbeing, rather than just the overall score, relate to the specific quality of life domains among male and female caregivers., Practice Implications: Pediatric nurses are at the frontline of service delivery for children and are in a prime position to observe caregivers who could be at high risk for psychological challenges. While the detrimental effects of protracted political conflict on the wellbeing of Palestinians living in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) are generally recognized, the impact of perceived threat on quality of life (QoL) faced from within their community (ingroup; Palestinians) and from the outgroup (Israelis) is unexplored. This cross-sectional study examined the following: (1) The status of perceptions of QoL on four domains measured by the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQoL-Bref) instrument, physical health, psychological health, social relationships, and environment, among Palestinian adults ( n = 709) living in the Gaza Strip; (2) The associations between perceived ingroup threat (PIT) and QoL on the four domains; (3) The associations between perceived outgroup threat (POT) and QoL on the four domains. Multivariable linear regression models revealed PIT was negatively associated with QoL in each of the four domains ( p < 0.001). POT was positively associated with QoL in three of the four domains: physical health ( p < 0.001), psychological health ( p < 0.001), and social relationships ( p < 0.001). This study contributes valuable insights into how QoL is viewed by a group experiencing collective existential threat. The findings expand the limited recognition of the reciprocal roles of perceived threat from the ingroup and outgroup on the QoL of vulnerable populations.

This international cross-sectional study examined the relationships between endometriosis-related symptom experience and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in 318 women with endometriosis. Measures of symptom burden and distress, pain, psychological wellbeing, and HRQoL were collected via an online survey. Age, symptom duration, burden, and distress were associated with lower psychological wellbeing and HRQoL, with small to medium effect sizes. Somatic concern, depression, pain, dysmenorrhea, clitoral pain, dyspareunia, and bloating were found to be significant correlates of HRQoL. The findings highlight the importance of considering a broader range of endometriosis-related symptoms than pain alone and the ongoing need to reduce diagnostic delay in endometriosis.

Objective: Connected health technologies have the potential to improve access to cancer care and support and reduce costs. We aimed to assess the impacts of interventions delivered using connected health technologies on psychological and quality of life (QoL) outcomes in people living with and beyond cancer., Methods: PUBMED, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and EMBASE were searched using terms relating to (i) cancer, (ii) connected health, and (iii) QoL/psychological wellbeing. Studies were included if they evaluated interventions using connected health technologies and assessed psychological and/or QoL outcomes for adults at any stage of cancer treatment or survivorship., Results: Thirty-seven studies met the inclusion criteria with a total of 8956 participants. Connected health technologies included web-based applications (n = 24), smart applications (n = 12), and wearable devices (n = 1). Studies were heterogeneous in terms of intervention components. We identified five clusters: (i) Psychosocial support and rehabilitation, (ii) psychoeducation and information support, (iii) symptom monitoring, reporting and self-management, (iv) peer and social support, and (v) health coaching and physical activity training. Due to heterogeneity of outcome measures, the meta-analysis included only seven RCTs; pooled mean estimates showed connected health interventions were moderately effective in reducing symptoms of depression (SMD: -0.226, 95% CI -0.303/-0.149) and anxiety (SMD: -0.188, 95% CI: 0.279/-0.0963) compared with usual care., Conclusion: While the considerable heterogeneity observed highlights the need for more rigorous studies to improve reproducibility and efficiency, results suggest that connected health interventions have the potential to improve psychological wellbeing and QoL outcomes in people living with and beyond cancer., (© 2022 The Authors. Introduction: Evidence on physical and psychological well-being of in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) survivors is scarce. The aim of this study is to describe long-term health-related quality of life (HRQoL), functional independence and psychological distress 3 and 12 months post-IHCA., Methods: A multicenter prospective cohort study in 25 hospitals between January 2017 - May 2018. Adult IHCA survivors were included. HRQoL (EQ-5D-5L, SF-12), psychological distress (HADS, CSI) and functional independence (mRS) were assessed at 3 and 12 months post-IHCA., Results: At 3-month follow-up 136 of 212 survivors responded to the questionnaire and at 12 months 110 of 198 responded. The median (IQR) EQ-utility Index score was 0.77 (0.65-0.87) at 3 months and 0.81 (0.70-0.91) at 12 months. At 3 months, patients reported a median SF-12 (IQR) physical component scale (PCS) of 38.9 (32.8-46.5) and mental component scale (MCS) of 43.5 (34.0-39.7) and at 12 months a PCS of 43.1 (34.6-52.3) and MCS 46.9 (38.5-54.5)., Discussion: Using various tools most IHCA survivors report an acceptable HRQoL and a substantial part experiences lower HRQoL compared to population norms. Objectives: Immune-mediated thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (iTTP) is an ultra-rare life-threatening thrombotic microangiopathy affecting adults with unpredictable disease onset and acute presentation. This study aimed to describe the health-related quality of life (HRQoL), cognitive functioning and work productivity of survivors following acute episode(s) of iTTP in the United Kingdom (UK)., Methods: An online survey was developed in collaboration with the TTP Network. Descriptive statistics were calculated for the health questionnaire Short Form Survey-36 Version 2 (SF-36v2), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Score (HADS), the PROMIS Cognitive Function Abilities Subset - Short Form 6a (PROMIS CFAS - SF6a), and the Work Productivity and Activity Index: Specific Health Problem (WPAI-SHP), along with several iTTP-specific bespoke questions., Results: Fifty participants were recruited between July-November 2019. The mean (standard deviation [SD]) standardized SF-36v2 physical and mental component scores were 42.16 (9.59) and 33.61 (12.34), lower than population norms. The mean (SD) standardized PROMIS CFAS - SF6a score was 39.69 (7.86), lower than population norms. HADS mean (SD) scores of 12.18 (3.14) and 11.78 (2.36) indicated moderate levels of anxiety and depression, respectively. Of those employed (58%), approximately 42.73% of participants reported work productivity loss due to their iTTP. Participants also reported experiencing flashbacks, fatigue interference in family, social and intimate life, and fears of relapse., Discussion and Conclusion: Regardless of recency of the last acute episode, participant scores signified impairments in all domains. Remission from an acute episode of disease does not signify the conclusion of care, but rather the requirement for long-term healthcare particularly focused on psychological support.

Background: Geriatric hospital wards are highly medicalised environments with limited opportunities for choice and control, and can be distressing for older survivors of psychological trauma. While trauma-informed models of care (TIC) are effectively applied across mental health and other settings, the utility of these models in aged care settings has not been assessed. The objective of this study was to examine whether TIC can reduce responsive behaviour, chemical restraint, and improve staff skills and patient experiences in inpatient geriatric settings., Methods: Four wards participated in this type I hybrid implementation-effectiveness study across southern Adelaide, Australia, including 79 beds. Using a co-design method, the principles of TIC were transformed into an implementation strategy including staff training, establishment of highly trained 'champions' on each ward, screening for trauma-related needs, and amending ward policies and procedures. Primary outcomes will be examined using an interrupted time-series design and are monthly incidence of responsive behaviour incidents and use of chemical restraint. Process evaluation will be used to examine secondary, implementation outcomes including the acceptability, feasibility, and fidelity to the implementation strategy., Discussion: Trauma-informed care has potential to improve the safety and accessibility of hospital wards for older people who have survived psychologically traumatic events and has an extensive evidence base supporting its effectiveness in other settings. Identifying trauma-related needs and amending care to reduce the risk of re-traumatisation and distress may also reduce the incidence of responsive behaviour change, which has a significant impact on the quality of life of hospital patients and staff and is very costly. Previous reviews have established that workplace wellbeing initiatives are effective at promoting wellbeing, but less is known about which intervention characteristics or "active ingredients" underpin this effectiveness (i.e., behavior change techniques [BCTs]). This review aims to illuminate the connections between the types of BCTs and the level of intervention intensity with intervention effectiveness. A systematic search for peer-reviewed studies evaluating a workplace wellbeing initiative was undertaken across five databases: Medline, Scopus, PsycInfo, and CINAHL (Ovid Emcare). Eligible studies included those that evaluated the effect of a workplace wellbeing initiative on participants' physical wellbeing (e.g., physical activity and quality of life) and psychological wellbeing (e.g., mental health and stress), were published between 2009 and September 2019, and utilized a comparator (e.g., control group or prepost change). Studies were screened in independent duplicate to minimize bias. Effect sizes were calculated. Following removal of duplicates, 1,541 studies were identified and screened for eligibility. Of these, 23 studies reporting 28 comparisons were deemed to meet eligibility criteria. Just over 50% of these studies reported evidence of either a strong or moderate effect across a physical and a psychological outcome, providing a positive indication that workplace wellbeing programs can promote physical and psychological wellbeing in workers. Interventions tended to employ multiple BCTs (mean range 8.1-9.4), however, no discernible patterns between the types or numbers of BCTs employed and intervention effectiveness was found. Expressive arts therapy (EAT) can potentially improve cognition and mental health in patients with dementia. However, limited studies have been conducted for older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The aim of this study was to examine the effects of EAT in older adults with MCI. A total of 48 participants with MCI were assigned to the EAT intervention (n = 24) or waiting list control (n = 24) group. The former received 60-90 min of EAT twice a week for 6 weeks. The findings showed that the EAT program had a high retention and attendance rate and a high level of general satisfaction. Moreover, the intervention group showed significant improvements in general cognitive function, language function, anxiety, depression, and the psychological and social relationship domains of quality of life. Background: Chronic primary insomnia is characterized by long-term difficulties in maintaining and initiating sleep, too early waking up, poor mood, fatigue, impaired concentration and poor quality of life. Exercise training is recommended to prevent and alleviate sleep disorders., Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of aerobic exercise training on quality of sleep, psychological wellbeing and immune system among subjects with chronic primary insomnia., Material and Methods: Eighty previously sedentary subjects with chronic primary insomnia subjects enrolled in this study, their age ranged from 35-56 years. All participants were randomly assigned to supervised aerobic exercise intervention group (group A, n=40) or control group (group B, n=40). Polysomnographic recordings for sleep quality assessment, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Profile of Mood States(POMS), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), number of CD3+, CD4+, CD8+ T cells count and CD4/CD8 ratio were measured before and at the end of the study after six months., Results: There was a significant increase in the total sleep duration, sleep efficiency and sleep onset latency in group(A) after six months of aerobic exercise training, while, wake time after sleep onset and rapid eye movement (REM) latency significantly reduced after six months of aerobic training compared with values obtained prior to aerobic exercise training. Also, the mean values of BDI, POMS, CD3 count, CD4 count and CD8 count decreased significantly and the mean value of RSES significantly increased in group (A) after the aerobic exercise training, while the results of the control group were not significant. The study explored health related quality of life of prisoners with diabetes mellitus (DM).48 male inmates incarcerated in a Greek prison, completed a demographic and clinical traits questionnaire. Prisoners with DM and those with additional health problems had worse physical, mental health and psychological well-being outcomes (p = 0.002, p < 0.001 and p = 0.014 respectively). People with DM in correctional facilities should receive specialized primary health care services either health services within the correctional institution or community liaison. The authors examined the feasibility of delivering an adapted version of SettleIN, a manualised staff-led programme designed to facilitate adjustment to care for new residents with dementia. The effects of SettleIN on resident adjustment, mood and quality of life were also investigated. A pilot randomised controlled trial was conducted. Nineteen new residents with dementia and 21 staff participants were recruited. Residents were randomly assigned to receive the SettleIN programme or residential care as usual. Resident quality of life, mood and overall adjustment were measured at baseline and post-intervention, in week seven. Interviews were conducted with staff in week seven to explore intervention feasibility. Despite medium to large effect sizes, there was no significant difference in mean change scores between the two conditions, with regards to quality of life, psychological wellbeing or overall adjustment outcomes. Qualitative feedback indicated that SettleIN was not feasible across all areas, with problems around recruitment and practicality. However, SettleIN was deemed feasible in terms of retention and acceptability among staff. The majority of staff felt that SettleIN was beneficial for residents but that organisational and programme factors impacted upon intervention feasibility. Further exploration of organisational barriers is needed in order to reduce the impact of such factors on care home research.

There is still little research on psychological wellbeing, life satisfaction and reported problems in preadolescents and adolescents under therapy for leukaemia, and also little research comparing them with their healthy peers. The present study aimed to analyse the life satisfaction, hope, psychological wellbeing and reported problems' intensity in 60 patients aged 8-18 during the first year of therapy, to identify those more at risk and to compare their reports with matched healthy peers. A battery of self-reported questionnaires was administered during hospitalisation or day hospital admissions post 6 months and post 12 months from the diagnosis. Younger patients (aged 8-13 years) were more at risk than older ones in their problems' intensity and psychological symptoms; females and Acute Myeloid Leukaemia patients reported lower current life satisfaction perceptions; hope was associated with lower depression symptoms and mood problems. Healthy peers have a better perception of current life, but reported a lower hope score, more anxiety symptoms and more cognitive problems than patients. The first 6 months were more critical for patients' psychological health. Basing on these empirical data, the inclusion of mental health care professionals or supportive psychotherapy into the treatment is recognized as extremely useful.

Background: The Quality of Life in Alzheimer's Disease Scale (QOL-AD) developed by Logsdon et al. in1999 is believed to be useful for evaluating responses from both patients and their caregivers. We previously confirmed both the reliability and the validity of the Japanese version of the QOL-AD. However, the factor structure of this scale should be confirmed because the QOL-AD covers multiple facets of dementia patients' lives. Thus, we performed a factor analysis of the Japanese QOL-AD. Then, we examined the correlations between each of the identified QOL factor scores and the results of other scales., Methods: The Japanese version of the QOL-AD was given to 132 AD patients and 132 caregivers. Four other tests were also performed at the same time: the Mini-Mental State Examination, the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI), the Hyogo Activities of Daily Living Scale (HADL), and the Short Memory Questionnaire. A factor analysis using Varimax rotation was used to examine the dimensions underlying the QOL-AD. In addition, we examined the Pearson correlations between each of the identified QOL factor scores and the results of the other four tests., Results: Factor analyses of both versions of the Japanese QOL-AD (both the patients' and the caregivers' responses) revealed three factors that were named 'psychological wellbeing', 'human relationships', and 'physical and social environment'. The 'psychological wellbeing' factor was significantly correlated with the Mood factor of the NPI. The 'human relationships' factor was significantly correlated with the Psychosis factor of the NPI. The 'physical and social environment' factor was significantly correlated with the HADL., Conclusions: Both the patients' and the caregivers' responses to the Japanese version of the QOL-AD were composed of three factors: 'psychological wellbeing', 'human relationships', and 'physical and social environment'. Background: An increasing importance is being placed on mental health and wellbeing at individual and population levels. While there are several interventions that have been proposed to improve wellbeing, more evidence is needed to understand which aspects of wellbeing are most influential. This study aimed to identify key items that signal improvement of mental health and wellbeing., Methods: Using network analysis, we identified the most central items in the graph network estimated from the well-established Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS). Results were compared across four major UK cohorts comprising a total of 47,578 individuals: the Neuroscience in Psychiatry Network, the Scottish Schools Adolescent Lifestyle and Substance Use Survey, the Northern Ireland Health Survey, and the National Child Development Study., Results: Regardless of gender, the three items most central in the network were related to positive self-perception and mood: 'I have been feeling good about myself'; 'I have been feeling confident'; and 'I have been feeling cheerful'. Results were consistent across all four cohorts., Conclusions: Positive self-perception and positive mood are central to psychological wellbeing. Psychotherapeutic and public mental health interventions might best promote psychological wellbeing by prioritising the improvement of self-esteem, self-confidence and cheerfulness. However, empirical testing of interventions using these key targets is needed.

Objectives: Conceiving narration as a resource to promote older people's wellbeing, the present work aimed to implement a narrative-based intervention to empower the subjective and psychological wellbeing of older adults living in nursing homes., Methods: Twenty-one nursing-home residents took part in a narrative training experience consisting of three weekly interview sessions. During each interview, a psychologist helped the participants to construct an autobiographical narrative about their present life in the nursing home based on a Deconstruction-Reconstruction technique. Subjective and psychological wellbeing variables were assessed before and after the intervention., Results: Subjective but not psychological wellbeing increased over the course of the intervention. The participants reported to appreciate the intervention., Conclusions: Although preliminary, the results suggest that brief narrative training based on narrative therapy can positively affect nursing-home residents' subjective wellbeing., Clinical Implications: Brief narrative interventions implementing deconstruction-reconstruction techniques are feasible for long-term care residents.

Few studies have examined the quality of life of immigrants in Greece and its relations to acculturation. This study explored the quality of life, psychological wellbeing and satisfaction with life among Albanian immigrants, Pontic Greeks in comparison to native Greeks. Furthermore, the relationship between quality of life, psychological wellbeing, satisfaction with life and acculturation of Albanian immigrants and Pontic Greeks was investigated. The study was based on 520 participants from broader area of Athens, 58.3% (303 people: 150 men and 153 women) native Greeks, 21.9% (114 people: 57 men and 57 women) Albanian immigrants and 19.8% (103 people: 50 men and 53 women) Pontic Greeks. Quality of life was measured by WHOQOL BREF-while wellbeing was measured with Satisfaction With Life Scale and The Affect Balance Scale. An adapted a version of Vancouver Index of Acculturation was used to assess acculturation of immigrants. The findings indicated three important factors contributed to quality of life and wellbeing of immigrants: ethnicity, heritage dimension of acculturation and gender. Albanian immigrants and Pontic Greeks scored lower on quality of life and satisfaction with life than native Greek.

Nonpharmacological treatment of insomnia in older persons has been associated with reduced insomnia symptoms and increased psychological wellbeing. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined whether nonpharmacological interventions can promote wellbeing indicators in older persons who experience insomnia symptoms and investigated the components of these interventions. Twenty studies met inclusion criteria. Psychological wellbeing outcomes included symptoms of depression, anxiety, mental health-related quality of life, and fatigue. Interventions significantly reduced depression and fatigue symptoms in most of the studies that included these outcomes. Findings of our qualitative analysis suggest that mindfulness-based interventions in particular can potentially reduce depression symptoms in older persons with insomnia symptoms. Meta-analyses of studies that included psychological wellbeing outcomes showed small-medium weighted mean effects indicating reductions in symptoms of depression, anxiety, and fatigue. The results suggest that nonpharmacological interventions for older persons with insomnia symptoms can potentially reduce depression and fatigue symptoms and highlight interventions that may be particularly valuable for this purpose., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Introduction: Sufficient sleep is necessary for optimal performance and the delivery of safe and effective health care. To establish an empirical understanding of physician fatigue, the present study investigated the factors that contributed to the amount and the quality of sleep among obstetricians and gynecologists (ob-gyns)., Methods: A survey of personal and work experiences was sent to 495 eligible physicians belonging to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Data were obtained from 287 ob-gyns for a response rate of 58.0%. Associations between sleep-related items and measures of stress and work-related factors were explored., Results: Ob-gyns in our sample reported sleeping an average of 6.5 hours a night with 29.2% indicating that they received very or fairly bad quality of sleep. Average amount and quality of sleep were found to be independently related to the hours worked weekly, colleague support for a work-home balance, practice setting, perceived work-control, physician-specific stressors and perceived stress. In summary models, hours worked and perceived stress scores consistently emerged as predictors of amount of sleep., Conclusions: Overall, findings explained a small portion of the variance in sleep. Considering the multitude of factors that contribute to sleep, subtle associations warrant further investigation.

Background: Although higher-protein diets (HP) can assist with weight loss and glycemic control, their effect on psychological wellbeing has not been established. The objective of this study was to compare the effects of a HP and a higher-carbohydrate diet (HC), combined with regular exercise, on psychological wellbeing both during weight loss (WL) and weight maintenance phases (WM)., Methods: In a parallel RCT, 61 adults with T2D (mean ± SD: BMI 34.3 ± 5.1 kg/m 2 , aged 55 ± 8 years) consumed a HP diet (29% protein, 34% carbohydrate, 31% fat) or an isocaloric HC diet (21%:48%:24%), with moderate intensity exercise, for 12 weeks of WL and 12 weeks of WM. Secondary data evaluating psychological wellbeing was assessed using: Problems Areas in Diabetes (PAID); Diabetes-39 Quality of Life (D-39); Short Form Health Survey (SF-36); Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10) and the Leeds Sleep Evaluation Questionnaire (LSEQ) at Weeks 0, 12 and 24 and evaluated with mixed models analysis., Results: Independent of diet, improvements for PAID; D-39 diabetes control; D-39 severity of diabetes; SF-36 physical functioning and SF-36 general health were found following WL (d = 0.30 to 0.69, P ≤ 0.04 for all) which remained after 12 weeks of WM. SF-36 vitality improved more in the HP group (group x time interaction P = 0.03). Associations were seen between HbA1c and D-39 severity of diabetes rating (r = 0.30, P = 0.01) and SF-36 mental health (r = - 0.32, P = 0.003) and between weight loss and PAID (r = 0.30, P = 0.01)., Conclusion: Several improvements in diabetes-related and general psychological wellbeing were seen similarly for both diets following weight loss and a reduction in HbA1c with most of these improvements remaining when weight loss was sustained for 12 weeks. Background: Children and adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) report impairments in daily activities, social interactions and coping. Findings regarding psychological functioning are inconsistent, while limited information is available on objectively assessed physical activity (PA). The aims of the present study were therefore to compare anthropometric dimensions, blood values, psychological functioning and PA of children and adolescents with IBD with healthy controls., Methods: Forty-seven children and adolescents took part in the study. Of these, 23 were diagnosed with IBD (mean age: 13.88 years, 44% females). The IBD group was divided into a medically well adjusted "remission-group" (n = 14; IBD-RE) and a group with an "active state" of disease (n = 8; IBD-AD). Healthy controls (n = 24; HC) were age- and gender-matched. Participants' anthropometric data, blood values and objective PA were assessed. Further, participants completed questionnaires covering socio-demographic data and psychological functioning., Results: Participants with IBD-AD showed higher erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP) values, haemoglobin, and leukocyte values. IBD-AD had poorer psychological functioning and lower PA (average steps per day) compared to IBD-RE and HC. No mean differences were found between IBD-RE and HC., Conclusions: The pattern of results suggests that effective medical treatment of IBD in children and adolescents is associated with favorable physiological parameters, psychological dimensions and PA. Background: New approaches to cope with clinical and psychosocial aspects of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) are needed; gender influences the complex interplay between clinical and non-clinical factors. We used data from the BENCH-D study to assess gender-differences in terms of clinical and person-centered measures in T2DM., Methods: Clinical quality of care indicators relative to control of HbA1c, lipid profile, blood pressure, and BMI were derived from electronic medical records. Ten self-administered validated questionnaires (SF-12 Health Survey; WHO-5 well-being index; Problem Areas in Diabetes (PAID) 5, Health Care Climate Questionnaire, Patients Assessment of Chronic Illness Care, Diabetes Empowerment Scale, Diabetes Self-care Activities, Global Satisfaction for Diabetes Treatment, Barriers to Taking Medications, Perceived Social Support) were adopted as person-centered outcomes indicators., Results: Overall, 26 diabetes clinics enrolled 2,335 people (men: 59.7%; women: 40.3%). Lower percentages of women reached HbA1c levels < =7.0% (23.2% vs. 27.8%; p = 0.03), LDL-cholesterol < 100 mg/dl (48.3 vs. 57.8%; p = 0.0005), and BMI <27 Kg/m2 (27.2 vs. 31.6%; p = 0.04) than men. Women had statistically significant poorer scores for physical functioning, psychological well-being, self-care activities dedicated to physical activities, empowerment, diabetes-related distress, satisfaction with treatment, barriers to medication taking, satisfaction with access to chronic care and healthcare communication, and perceived social support than men; 24.8% of women and 8.8% of men had WHO-5 < =28 (likely depression) (p < 0.0001); 67.7% of women and 55.1% of men had PAID-5 > 40 (high levels of diabetes-related distress) (p < 0.0001). At multivariate analysis, factors associated with an increased likelihood of having elevated HbA1c levels (≥8.0%) were different in men and women, e.g. having PAID-5 levels >40 was associated with a higher likelihood of HbA1c ≥8.0% in women (OR = 1.15; 95%CI 1.05-1.25) but not in men (OR = 1.00; 95%CI 0.93-1.08)., Conclusions: In T2DM, women show poorer clinical and person-centered outcomes indicators than men. Diabetes-related distress plays a role as a correlate of metabolic control in women but not in men. The study provides new information about the interplay between clinical and person-centered indicators in men and women which may guide further improvements in diabetes education and support programs.

Leisure is an important quality of life factor for older Korean immigrants. The purpose of this study was to explore leisure benefits associated with health among older Korean immigrants. A total of 18 individuals participated in the study. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), three themes emerged from participants' personal statements and experiences: (a) experiencing psychological benefits, (b) strengthening social connections, and (c) coping with acculturative stress. The findings indicate that leisure provided a context in which older Korean immigrants created an emotional and social support system that helped them to experience psychological and social benefits. Chronic fatigue syndrome or myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME) is a disabling condition known to have a negative impact on all aspects of a child's life. However, little is understood about the impact of CFS/ME on siblings. A total of 34 siblings completed questionnaires measuring depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS)), anxiety (HADS and Spence Children's Anxiety Scale (SCAS)) and European Quality-of-life-Youth (EQ-5D-Y). These scores were compared with scores from normative samples. Siblings had higher levels of anxiety on the SCAS than adolescents of the same age recruited from a normative sample; however, depression and quality-of-life were similar. Interviews were undertaken with nine siblings of children with CFS/ME who returned questionnaires. Interview data were analysed using a framework approach to thematic analysis. Siblings identified restrictions on family life, 'not knowing' and lack of communication as negative impacts on their family, and change of role/focus, emotional reactions and social stigma as negative impacts on themselves. They also described positive communication, social support and extra activities as protective factors. Paediatric services should be aware of the impact of CFS/ME on the siblings of children with CFS/ME, understand the importance of assessing paediatric CFS/ME patients within the context of their family and consider providing information for siblings about CFS/ME., (© The Author(s) 2015.)

Objective: The descriptive findings from the Danish sample of the second Diabetes, Attitudes, Wishes, and Needs (DAWN2) study are presented, with specific focus on the psychological impact of living with diabetes and quality of life for people with diabetes and family members of people with diabetes., Method: 502 people with diabetes over the age of 18 and 122 family members completed questionnaires online, by telephone or in person, including validated measures of diabetes-related distress, emotional well-being and quality of life as well as other measures of psychological well-being., Results: People with diabetes reported that living with diabetes was a psychological burden, with individuals taking insulin medication or diagnosed with type 1 diabetes reporting the most distress. Half of all family members sampled reported that living with diabetes impacted them negatively., Conclusion: The higher levels of emotional distress found in people taking insulin medication are likely due to greater disease severity and associated self-care burdens. Care and support programmes may need to be revised in order to better address these issues. Background: Management of older women with breast cancer (BC) is challenging, as age-related comorbidities may limit treatment. We present 5-year follow-up data from women aged 70 years or older (70+), at the time of diagnosis of their BC, compared with younger women (<70 years)., Methods: Data is from an Australian cohort study of women with their first episode of invasive BC (Bupa study). Participants completed an enrollment questionnaire (EQ) within 12 months of diagnosis and annual follow-up questionnaires (FQ) for 5 years (FQ1-5). Data collected included details of the BC and its treatment. Psychological wellbeing was measured by the Psychological General Wellbeing Index (PGWB)., Results: At diagnosis, 274 (16%) women were aged 70+ and of them, 90% were aged 70-79 years. Compared with women aged <70 years, the women aged 70+ were less likely to have positive nodes, they were less likely to receive radiotherapy and chemotherapy and were more likely to have pre-existing cardiovascular morbidities. By FQ5 women aged 70+ were less likely to be taking oral adjuvant endocrine therapy (OAET) and were more likely to have died from causes other than BC. At FQ5, women 70+ reported less anxiety and better self-control., Conclusions: Women aged 70+, compared to <70 years, had less advanced disease, received radiation and chemotherapy less often, were more likely to have cardiovascular disease at the time of diagnosis, were less likely to be taking OAET at the 5-year assessment, and were more likely to die of causes other than breast cancer., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc. Introduction: Given the biological complexity of the ageing process, there is no single, simple and reliable measure of how healthily someone is ageing. Intervention studies need a panel of measures which capture key features of healthy ageing. To help guide our research in this area, we have adopted the concept of the "Healthy Ageing Phenotype" (HAP) and this study aimed to (i) identify the most important features of the HAP and (ii) identify/develop tools for measurement of those features., Methods: After a comprehensive assessment of the literature we selected the following domains: physiological and metabolic health, physical capability, cognitive function, social wellbeing, and psychological wellbeing which we hoped would provide a reasonably holistic characterisation of the HAP. We reviewed the literature and identified systematic reviews and/or meta-analysis of cohort studies, and clinical guidelines on outcome measures of these domains relevant to the HAP. Selection criteria for these measures included: frequent use in longitudinal studies of ageing; expected to change with age; evidence for strong association with/prediction of ageing-related phenotypes such as morbidity, mortality and lifespan; whenever possible, focus on studies measuring these outcomes in populations rather than on individuals selected on the basis of a particular disease; (bio)markers that respond to (lifestyle-based) intervention. Proposed markers were exposed to critique in a Workshop held in Newcastle, UK in October 2012., Results: We have selected a tentative panel of (bio)markers of physiological and metabolic health, physical capability, cognitive function, social wellbeing, and psychological wellbeing which we propose may be useful in characterising the HAP and which may have utility as outcome measures in intervention studies. In addition, we have identified a number of tools which could be applied in community-based intervention studies designed to enhance healthy ageing., Conclusions: We have proposed, tentatively, a panel of outcome measures which could be deployed in community-based, lifestyle intervention studies. The evidence base for selection of measurement domains is less well developed in some areas e.g. social wellbeing (where the definition of the concept itself remains elusive) and this has implications for the identification of appropriate tools. University students' physical and psychological health and wellbeing are important and comprise many variables. This study assessed perceived health status in addition to a range of physical and psychological wellbeing indicators of 3,706 undergraduate students from seven universities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. We compared differences in these variables across males and females, and across the participating universities. The data was collected in 2007-2008. A self-administered questionnaire assessed socio-demographic information (e.g., gender, age), self-reported physical and psychological health data, as well as questions on health awareness, health service use, social support, burdens and stressors and university study related questions. While females generally reported more health problems and psychological burdens, male students felt that they received/had fewer persons to depend on for social support. The comparisons of health and wellbeing variables across the different universities suggested some evidence of 'clustering' of the variables under study, whereby favourable situations would be exhibited by a cluster of the variables that is encountered at some universities; and conversely, the clustering of less favourable variables as exhibited at other universities. We conclude that the level of health complaints and psychological problems/burdens is relatively high and calls for increased awareness of university administrators, leaders and policy makers to the health and well-being needs of their students. The observed clustering effects also indicated the need for local (university-specific) health and wellbeing profiles as basis and guidance for relevant health promotion programmes at universities.

Based on the Resilience Model of Family Stress, Adjustment and Adaptation, the present study aims to analyze the emotional competences that canpl predict higher levels of psychological wellbeing and quality of life in supplementary grandparents caregivers. Methods: A sample of 270 supplementary grandparents caregivers living in Spain participated. Most participants were women (71.1%), and the mean age was 67.83 years (SD = 6.26). Most participants were occasional caregivers, that is, they care for less than 10 h per week (76.3%). We conducted hierarchical multiple regression analysis, one for psychological wellbeing and the other for quality of life. Results: The regression model for psychological wellbeing identified that age, management of caregiving stress, self-confidence in the caregiving role, management of work-life balance difficulties and emotional self-regulation explained 32.8% of its variance. The regression model for quality of life showed that age, type of grandparent caregiver, management of caregiving stress, management of work-life balance difficulties and emotional self-regulation explained 31.2% of its variance. Conclusion: This study focuses on supplementary grandparents caregivers, whereas literature has tended to look at primary grandparents caregivers. The results highlight the role of emotional competences as predictors of supplementary grandparents caregivers' psychological wellbeing and quality of life, overcoming the usual tendency in the literature to focus on the negative consequences of grandparents caregiving for grandchildren, and emphasizing the competences that grandparents have to cope with this care in a satisfactory way, which, moreover, can be trained. Informal caregivers of older people face demanding responsibilities that can negatively affect their wellbeing, highlighting the relevance of interventions that address their specific needs. This study aimed to assess the effects of a group music therapy program based on different songwriting approaches applied to informal caregivers of older adults with dependency. A sample of 113 caregivers participated, being assigned either to the intervention (n = 60) or the control group (n = 53). The intervention group caregivers received 10 weekly sessions of the songwriting program, while the control group continued with their usual care service. Psychological symptoms and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) were assessed at baseline and follow-up using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory-II, Zarit Burden Interview, and SF-36. Group × Time interactions revealed significant improvements in the intervention group compared to the control one in trait anxiety (p = 0.022), social functioning (p = 0.013), role limitations due to physical problems (p = 0.020), and physical component summary (p = 0.022). These findings provided valuable evidence on this novel intervention, showing positive effects for caregivers' wellbeing. Study details, including the citation count, main content focus, outcome measures, and usage of psychological questionnaires, were extracted and tabulated from each publication. The Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine (OCEBM) levels of evidence (LOE) of each study were assessed. Results: The 100 most cited publications on QoL in implant-based reconstruction were identified, encompassing 64,192 patients and 28,114 reconstructed breasts. Citations per publication ranged from 62 to 457 (mean, 124.95 ± 73.05), with the highest-cited study being authored by Al-Ghazal (n = 457). The vast majority of publications were LOE II (n = 52), representative of prospective cohort studies, systematic reviews of non-randomised studies, and systematic review and meta-analysis. The number of publications for LOE V, IV, III, and I was 0, 7, 41, and 0, respectively. The main content focus was "quality of life" in 83 publications, with significant utilisation of the BREAST-Q questionnaire. A total of 80 publications used validated questionnaires with psychometric development. Conclusions: This analysis demonstrates that the research methodologies within IBRmostly consist of moderate-quality publications; however, notably, there was a lack of LOE I studies, underscoring a gap in high-quality research within the field. Moreover, only 62/100 used validated PROM tools. Purpose: Chronic pain and obesity often co-occur, negatively affecting one another and psychological wellbeing. Pain and psychological wellbeing improve after bariatric metabolic surgery (BMS), however, it is unknown whether psychological wellbeing improves differently after weight loss between patients with and without chronic pain. We investigated whether weight loss is associated with greater psychological wellbeing and functioning change after BMS, comparing patients with and without preoperative pain syndromes. Methods: Depression, health-related quality of life, self-esteem, self-efficacy to exercise and controlling eating behaviours, physical activity, and food cravings were measured before and 24 months after BMS among 276 patients with obesity. The presence of preoperative chronic pain syndromes was examined as a moderator for the relationship between 24-month weight loss and changes in psychological outcomes. Results: Chronic pain syndromes were present among 46% of patients. Weight loss was associated with greater improvement in health-related quality of life, self-efficacy to exercise and controlling eating behaviours, self-esteem and greater amelioration in food cravings. Pain syndromes only moderated negatively the relationship between the postoperative weight loss and change in self-efficacy to control eating behaviours (b = -0.49, CI [-0.88,-0.12]). Conclusion: Patients with and without chronic pain showed similar improvements in weight and psychological wellbeing and behaviours after BMS. The relationship between weight loss and the improvement of self-efficacy to control eating behaviours was weaker among patients with chronic pain syndrome. Further work, measuring pain severity over time, is needed to shed light on the mechanism underlying pain and postoperative change in psychological wellbeing and weight loss. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background The objectives of the study were to assess the quality of life (QOL) among women with breast cancer and associate the QOL with selected background variables. Methods A cross-sectional descriptive study was adopted for the study. Data collection was done in oncology units of tertiary care centers. The sample type includes woman with breast cancer at stage I or II or IIIa as per TNM classification. A purposive sampling technique was followed with a total sample size of 60. The tool used was the Quality of Life (QOL) questionnaire - Breast Cancer Version by National Medical Center & Beckman Research institute. Results The QOL among study participants revealed that 42 (70%) had average QOL and 18 (30%) had poor QOL. The QOL was examined in various domains such as physical wellbeing, where the mean score was 38.47, the psychological wellbeing mean score was 60.58, social wellbeing mean was 38.10 and spiritual wellbeing mean was 38.58. There was an association between residence and occupation with QOL at p Conclusions Breast cancer diagnosis has an undeniable effect on women at work, home and can have rapid consequences for other members in the family. Evaluation of QOL and associated factors would help the health care professionals especially nurses to organize health promotion activities and counselling sessions in varied health care settings to overcome challenges and improve Quality of Life.

BackgroundOlder people can experience health and social challenges such as loneliness, depression, and lack of social connectedness. There is need for programs and approaches that address the growing incidence of social isolation and loneliness for older people. One initiative that aims to address these challenges is the Sporting Memories program. This program was developed in the United Kingdom and licensed to South Australia in 2019. The program is currently delivered across six community locations.MethodsThe aim of this study was to explore participants perspectives of the Sporting Memories program in South Australia. Underpinned by qualitative research, three focus groups were conducted, led by an experienced interviewer. Focus groups occurred at three of the six locations, including a day respite center, assisted living center and a government community center. The data were analyzed thematically by the research team.ResultsThere were 16 participants over 65 years old, including four women and 12 men. Three key themes were developed: “free to talk about anything,” “not feeling left out” and “a chance to share and learn.” Collectively, participants reflected on how they built social connections, felt safe and included and learnt more about each other.ConclusionThe Sporting Memories program provides a group program for older people to come together and develop new friendships. The use of sports as a means of reminiscence was considered relatable for the participants who reported social benefits and plans to keep attending. They valued learning through the program which was enhanced by having a facilitator who was knowledgeable about sport.

Background: The global spread of SARS-CoV-2 profoundly affected physicians, especially the trainees in residency programs, in terms of psychological, social well-being, and educational aspects. However, the extent of its impact and how it compromises their quality of life and care has not been established well. Objectives: The aim of our study is to assess the impact of SARS-CoV-2 on psychological, social wellbeing and education among the trainees in residency training programs in the Ministry of Health in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 89 trainee residents in February 2022 using the perceived stress questionnaire distributed over social media platforms to be answered online. The questionnaire was composed of 4 parts: demographics, the impact of the COVID-19 virus on psychological well-being, training, and education. A p-value cut-off point of <0.05 at a 95% Confidence Interval (CI) was used to determine statistical significance. Result: Of the 89 questionnaires distributed, 85 trainees responded (95.5%). Residents who covered COVID-19 centers for more than four months had a higher impact on their training than those who covered less than two months. Female trainees were more affected than males. However, there was no significant difference among genders regarding the level of stress and psychological well-being. Conclusion: The adoption of new strategies in the training department for the trainees is recommended to decrease the adverse psychological effects and to prevent any compromise in the training in future pandemics. This study examined differences in mental health in older adult women before versus during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants who were community dwelling (N = 227) included n = 67 women aged 60–94 in the pre-pandemic group and n = 160 women aged 60–85 in the peri-pandemic group who completed self-report measures assessing mental health and quality of life (QOL). We compared mental health and QOL indices across the pre- and peri-pandemic groups. Results indicated that the peri-pandemic group reported higher anxiety (F = 4.94, p =.027) than the pre-pandemic group. No other significant differences emerged. Given the differential effects in this pandemic across SES, we conducted exploratory analyses investigating differences by income group. Controlling for education and race, within the pre-pandemic group, women with lower income reported worse physical function compared to the mid- and high-income groups. Within the peri-pandemic group, women with lower income reported worse anxiety, poorer sleep, and poorer QOL (physical function, role limitations due to physical problems, vitality, and pain) than high-income individuals. Overall, women who reported lower income reported worse mental health and QOL than those with high-income, especially during the pandemic. This indicates that income might act as a buffer for older women against negative psychological outcomes of the COVID-19 pandemic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The consensus on recovery from alcohol use disorder (AUD) has shifted toward encompassing psychological wellbeing and quality of life dimensions. However, few studies have explored the long-term recovery process and its dimensions, timing, styles, and modes. The aim of this study was to investigate the extent, timing, and process of psychological wellbeing and quality of life recovery in alcohol use disorder (AUD) patients, as well as the relationship with classic dimensions of AUD recovery. Method: A cross-sectional study has been carried out with 348 participants with AUD, in different abstinence periods (1 month-28 years), and 171 control subjects. Participants underwent a psychological evaluation, which included self-informed measures of psychological wellbeing, quality of life, negative emotionality, and coping strategies related to alcohol consumption avoidance. Statistical analysis included linear and non-linear regression models between psychological dimensions and maintenance of abstinence, as well as matching the scores of the sample with AUD to those of controls. Scatter plots were used to explore inflection points. In addition, mean comparison tests were performed between participants with AUD and controls and by gender. Results: In general, according to the regression models, there were pronounced increases in indices of wellbeing and coping strategies (and pronounced decreases in negative emotionality) during the first 5 years of abstinence, followed by less pronounced improvements. The matching of AUD subjects in wellbeing and negative emotionality indices with controls occurs at different times: (a) 1 year or less: physical health; (b) 1-4 years: psychological health; (c) 4-10 years: social relationships, wellbeing, and negative emotionality; and (d) more than 10 years: autonomy and self-acceptance. There are statistically significant differences by gender for the negative emotionality and physical health variables. Conclusion: Recovery from AUD is a long process that involves improvements in wellbeing and quality of life. Four stages can be described in this process, with the most pronounced changes occurring during the first 5 years of abstinence. Background: The objectives of the study were to assess the quality of life (QOL) among women with breast cancer and associate the QOL with selected background variables. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was adopted for the study. Data collection was done in oncology units of tertiary care centers. The sample type includes woman with breast cancer at stage I or II or IIIa as per TNM classification. A purposive sampling technique was followed with a total sample size of 60. The tool used was the Quality of Life (QOL) questionnaire - Breast Cancer Version by National Medical Center & Beckman Research institute. Results: The QOL among study participants revealed that 42 (70%) had average QOL and 18 (30%) had poor QOL. The QOL was examined in various domains such as physical wellbeing, where the mean score was 38.47, the psychological wellbeing mean score was 60.58, social wellbeing mean was 38.10 and spiritual wellbeing mean was 38.58. There was an association between residence and occupation with QOL at pConclusions: Breast cancer diagnosis has an undeniable effect on women at work, home and can have rapid consequences for other members in the family. Evaluation of QOL and associated factors would help the health care professionals especially nurses to organize health promotion activities and counselling sessions in varied health care settings to overcome challenges and improve Quality of Life.

Background & Aims: Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a chronic disease with a high mortality rate and is completely different from other diseases. It is an infectious disease caused by HIV, which is transmitted through contact between blood and semen. The disease is a rapidly expanding health challenge, and research findings show that people struggling with chronic diseases such as HIV + show high levels of psychological problems and dysfunction. HIV + is also associated with low resilience. Resilience is the ability to adapt to stressors in the face of adversity, which is a learnable skill and its mechanisms moderate the relationship between pain and its consequences. In other words, resilient and stubborn people can overcome a variety of adverse effects, have a greater ability to solve problems and respond better to adverse conditions to maintain their psychological well-being. Accordingly, research shows that people with HIV + have low psychological well-being in addition to low resilience. Psychological well-being is the pursuit of perfection in the realization of one's potential, which includes self-acceptance, positive relationships with others, autonomy, purposeful living, personal growth, and mastery of the environment. Unfortunately, in addition to affecting and lowering the quality of life of an infected person, HIV + can also affect the functioning of the family and the quality of life of those around them, including parents. Quality of life is a social concept according to which a person gives a mental understanding of the good or bad of life. Accordingly, the World Health Organization defines the quality of life as an individual's perception of life in the context of society's culture and values in line with the individual's goals and interests and relates it to physical, mental, beliefs, self-reliance, and social relationships. Knows. Therefore, some researchers believe that there is as much quality of life as there are people on earth because everyone can give a different perception and meaning to life. Compassion-focused therapy (CFT) was proposed by Paul Gilbert. Although the components of this treatment were initially proposed by Neff and he introduced them as awareness, kindness to oneself, and a sense of fellowship with humanity, it was Gilbert who used these structures in treatment sessions and introduced CFT. Although research findings support the effectiveness of compassion-focused therapy in a wide range of clinical problems, the researcher's research shows that so far a study on the effect of this treatment on variables of resilience, psychological well-being, and quality of life in HIV + patients Has not taken place. Accordingly, this study seeks to answer the question of whether a course of treatment focused on compassion has a significant effect on resilience, psychological well-being, and quality of life of HIV + patients? Methods: The present study was applied and included experimental designs of pretest-post-test with an experimental group and a control group. The statistical population of the study is all 330 HIV + patients in the Center for Behavioral Diseases in 1397. According to Fidel and Tapachik's (2001) purposeful sampling method, 107 people (104+ number of dependent variables) had the criteria for inclusion in the study. They were selected from the mentioned community. For screening, the selected candidates first answered the Connor and Davidson Resilience Questionnaire (2003), the Reef Psychological Well-Being Questionnaire (1989), and the Weir and Sherborn Quality of Life Questionnaire (1992), followed by 55 people with the lowest scores. Were selected in response to the questionnaires, and finally 30 people who met the inclusion criteria and declared their readiness to conduct the study were included in the study. Candidates were randomly assigned to a 15- member experimental group and a 15-member control group. Inclusion criteria included at least one year of HIV + infection, not receiving any other psychological intervention during the study, the age range of at least 20 and at most 30 years, higher education, single marital status, and no gender consideration is. Exclusion criteria included the unwillingness of volunteers to continue the sessions and the absence of more than one session in group interventions. The experimental groups underwent 8 sessions of 120-minute treatment focused on compassion therapy (CFT). The control group did not receive any intervention until the end of the study. At the end of the interventions, all three groups were re-evaluated and the results of the interventions were compared with each other. To evaluate the stability of treatment, 1 month after the interventions, the volunteers were re-evaluated. The instruments of this study included the Connor and Davidson Resilience Questionnaire (2003), the Reef Psychological Well-Being Questionnaire (1989), and the Weir and Sherborne Quality of Life Questionnaire (1992). Data analysis was performed in two parts: descriptive and inferential. Covariance analysis was used to analyze the data. Results: The findings indicate that the independent variable, ie compassion-focused treatment, has affected all research variables including resilience, psychological well-being, and physical and psychological quality of life, and are significant at the level of 0.001. Conclusion: Explaining the findings of this study in the sense that compassionfocused therapy affects the variables of resilience, psychological well-being, and quality of life, it can be said that compassion-focused therapy, like acceptance and commitment therapy, is opposed to clinical diagnosis. And these variables, as described earlier, are positive psychological variables. The three basic principles taught to people living with HIV in this treatment include mindfulness awareness, common human principles, and self-kindness. Objective. The present study aimed at evaluating and analyzing the correlations between normal personality -measured through the Big Five factors model-, psychological wellbeing and health-related quality of life in a group of women diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Method. The design consisted of a quantitative ex post facto, cross-sectional and correlational study with 98 women. Results. 51.3% of participants showed high levels of neuroticism, 60.5% low levels of agreeable-ness, and 42.1% low levels of extraversion. Neuroticism correlated negatively with all dimensions of psychological wellbeing and most dimensions of quality of life. Personality factors and extraversion showed the best correlations with health-associated quality of life. Discussion. The present results suggest that high neuroticism, low extraversion and agreeableness are associated with adverse outcomes. These include poorer self-acceptance, relationships, autonomy, environmental mastery, personal growth, purpose in life, physical and emotional role, mental health, and more perceived pain. Despite the growing use of retirement communities and ageing care facilities, little is known about how residing in retirement residences may impact aspects of older adult wellbeing. Living in these communities may hold particular influence on residents' sense of purpose, if they feel limited in their opportunities for individual action, or could serve to promote purposefulness depending on the social connections available. The current study sought to explore contributing factors as well as barriers to purpose in older adults living in three continuing care retirement communities. Using brief semi-structured interviews, 18 older adults were asked to describe their purpose in life, community-related activities and any perceived challenges limiting their ability to pursue this purpose. Thematic analysis was used to examine themes common across interviews. Interviews presented a mixed picture of the nature of purposefulness in retirement facilities. Residents espoused several benefits of community living such as social and leisure opportunities, while also noting several obstacles to their purpose, including health concerns and the belief that purpose in life was not relevant for older adults. These findings provide insight into how older adults can derive a sense of purpose from activities within their retirement community and how facilities can better tailor programmes to promote purposefulness and support personally valued roles for residents.
