Presents information on a study that investigated the coherent dynamics of excitons in Zn[sub1-x]Cd[subx]Se/ZnSe multiple quantum wells. Experimental procedure; Results and discussion on the study; Conclusion.

In this contribution, we present strong coupling of ZnSe quantum well excitons to Bragg modes resulting in the formation of Bragg polariton eigenstates, characterized by a small effective mass in comparison to a conventional microcavity. We observe an anticrossing of the excitonic and the photonic component in our sample being a clear signature for the strong-coupling regime. The anticrossing is investigated by changing the detuning between the excitonic components and the Bragg mode. We find anticrossings between the first Bragg mode and the heavy- as well as light-hole exciton, respectively, resulting in three polariton branches. The observed Bragg-polariton branches are in good agreement with theoretical calculations. The strong indication for the existence of strong coupling is traceable up to a temperature of 200 K, with a Rabi-splitting energy of 24 meV and 13 meV for the Bragg mode with the heavy- and light-hole exciton, respectively. We report on the tuning of the optical properties of II-VI-material-based microcavity samples, which is achieved by depositing Ag films on top of the structures. The micro-reflectivity spectra show a spectral shift of the sample resonance dependent on the metal layer thickness. By comparison of the experimental findings with the theoretical calculations applying the transfer matrix method on a metal-dielectric mirror structure, the influence of the metal layer particularly with regard to its partial oxidation was explored. Tamm plasmon modes are created at the interface between an open cavity with three ZnSe quantum wells and a metal layer on top. When tuning the excitonic emission relative to the mode by changing the sample temperature, an anticrossing of the resonances was observed. This is a clear indication that the strong coupling regime has been achieved in that sample configuration yielding a Rabi splitting of 18.5meV. Microcavity structures which consist of a cavity formed by two distributed Bragg reflectors can be used to study light-matter interaction in the weak and strong coupling regime. In this contribution microcavities with one or three ZnSe quantum wells embedded into the cavity are presented. In contrast to the sample with the single quantum well, strong light-matter coupling can be observed for that one with three quantum wells. The sample possesses an energy splitting of about 19meV between the upper and lower polariton branch observed by reflectivity measurements. In addition, the transition from strong to weak coupling and the starting of the photonic lasing is demonstrated by excitation density dependent measurements. (© 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We have performed systematic studies of the optical gain and its saturation in (In, Ga)N/GaN/(Al, Ga)N laser structures that depend on the excitation density and number of quantum wells. The unsaturated gain factor which was obtained by the variable stripe-length method increases with excitation power, i.e., increasing modal gain. The gain factor also increases with a decreasing number of quantum wells, as is shown by the investigation of a series of laser structures with 3, 4, 5, and 10 quantum wells for fixed modal gain. Values up to 40 dB at 300 K were measured. Thermal activation energies obtained by temperature dependent photoluminescence measurements yield information on the influence of nonradiative recombination processes on optical gain saturation. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. We present a systematic and quantitative investigation of the quantum confined Stark effect in (Zn, Cd)Se/Zn(S,Se) quantum well structures at room temperature. For this purpose, differential transmission spectroscopy is performed on two samples with different thicknesses of the active layers (4×5 nm and 10 nm) and compared to model calculations. We observe a Stark shift of 18 meV in the heavy-hole exciton peak for an electric-field change from 82 to 175 kV/cm for the 4×5 nm sample. In contrast, the 10 nm sample shows a rather weak and more Franz–Keldysh-like signal. Furthermore, we have analyzed the spectral behavior of the linewidth enhancement factor α[sub H]. Values between 5.1 and 0.2 are found at the energy of absolute maximum of the absorption change for the 4×5 nm sample. © 1998 American Institute of Physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
