Young rabbits are susceptible to gastrointestinal diseases caused by bacteria. Enterococcus hirae can be associated with diseases. But enterocins produced by some enterococcal species can prevent/reduce this problem. Therefore, the interaction of enterocin M with a biofilm-forming, autochthonous E. hirae Kr8 + strain was tested in rabbits to assess enterocin potential in vivo. Rabbits (96), aged 35 days, both sexes, meat line M91 breed were divided into four groups, control C and three experimental groups. The rabbits in C received the standard diet, rabbits in experimental group 1 (E1) received 10 8  CFU/mL of Kr8 + , a dose 500 µL/animal/day, E2 received Ent M (50 µL/animal/day), and E3 received both Kr8 + and Ent M in their drinking water over 21 days. The experiment lasted 42 days. Feces and blood were sampled at day 0/1 (at the start of the experiment, fecal mixture of 96 animals, n = 10), at day 21 (five fecal mixtures per group, n = 5), and at day 42 (21 days after additives cessation, the same). At days 21 and 42, four rabbits from each group were slaughtered, and cecum and appendix were sampled for standard microbial analysis. Ent M showed decreased tendency of Kr8 + . Using next-generation sequencing, the phyla detected with the highest abundance were Firmicutes, Verrucomicrobia, Bacteroidetes, Tenericutes, Proteobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Saccharibacteria, and Actinobacteria. Interaction of Ent M with some phyla resulted in reduced abundance percentage. At day 21, significantly increased phagocytic activity (PA) was found in E1 and E2 (p < 0.001). Kr8 + did not attack PA and did not stimulate oxidative stress. But Ent M supported PA. The prospective importance of this study lies in beneficial interaction of enterocin in host body., (© 2022. Nisin is a bacteriocin marketed as Nisaplin. The aim of this study was to follow the effect of commercial lantibiotic nisin on the growth performance and carcass quality of broiler rabbits. The increase of average daily gain (by 9.4%) was recorded in the nisin group. The treatment did not have a negative influence on the pH, colour, water-holding capacity, protein and fat contents or energetic value of the rabbit carcass. Inferring from the higher average daily gain and the higher protein and lower fat content, we conclude that the diet supplementation with nisin may enhance the quality of rabbit meat.

This study presents the effects of the probiotic and enterocin M-producing strain Enterococcus faecium AL41 on microbiota, phagocytic activity (PA), oxidative stress, performance and biochemical parameters when applied individually or in combination with Eleutherococcus senticosus in rabbits. The novelty of the study lies in the use of our non-rabbit-derived strain (AL41 = CCM8558) which produces new enterocin M. Ninety-six post-weaned rabbits (Hyplus breed) aged 5 weeks were divided into three experimental groups, 24 in each: E. senticosus (ES, 30 g/100 kg) in feed, E. faecium AL41 (10(9) CFU/mL marked by rifampicin to differentiate it from other enterococci) in water, and ES + AL. AL41 colonized sufficiently in rabbits to reduce coliforms, staphylococci, pseudomonads and clostridia. Slight decrease in bacteria was also found in the caecum and appendix. Phagocytic activity was significantly increased in the experimental groups compared to the control group (CG) (p < 0.001; p < 0.05). Applications did not evoke oxidative stress. Biochemical parameters in blood and caecal organic acids were slightly influenced. Average daily weight gain was slightly higher in ES and AL + ES. Combinative application of E. faecium with E. senticosus can be beneficial in rabbits. AL41 strain alone and in combination with ES produced reduction in spoilage bacteria; the highest stimulation of PA was in the AL41 + ES group.

Featured Application: Postbiotic, Mundticin-like substance EM 41/3 looks as a promising additive for health status sustainability in animal husbandry. Nowadays, the use of probiotics, postbiotics, parabiotics and other beneficial natural substances dominate health status sustainability in animals. Mundticin-like substance EM 41/3 (MLS) is a thermo-stable substance of proteinaceous character—a bacteriocin (postbiotic) with a broad antimicrobial (inhibitory) spectrum produced by the horse-derived strain Enterococcus mundtii EM 41/3. The aim of this study was to find if this new one bacteriocin can have an effect and/or a similar effect in rabbits as was achieved previously by using enterocins detected and characterized in our laboratory. In addition, these tests have been conducted to secure the health of rabbits as food-derived animals. Moreover, the aim of this study was also to test the effect of MLS EM 41/3 in broiler rabbits as an animal model before its use in horses. The parameters tested were analyzed by validated methods. Administration of MLS EM 41/3 lead to a significant increase in the non-specific immunity parameter (phagocytic activity, p < 0.05), while microbiota in feces, caecum and appendix were not negatively influenced. However, the total enterococcal count was significantly increased in the EG compared to the CG (p < 0.001). Application of MLS EM 41/3 did not have a negative impact on blood biochemistry. No oxidative stress was noted. However, higher growth parameters were noted and also hydrolytic activity was increased after MLS EM 41/3 application. Finally, to check physico-chemical parameters, no negative influence on rabbit meat quality was noted. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of dried hempseed cake (by-product of oil production) supplementation (5 % − EG1 and 10 % − EG2) to rabbit feed mixture on livestock performances, quality of meat, digestibility of nutrients and animal health status. The chemical composition of the Longissimus thoracis and lumborum muscle including the content of fatty acids and amino acids, and the biochemical parameters in caecum and blood of growing rabbits were investigated. No significant differences among the experimental groups in feed intake, body weight and carcass parameters were found. The digestibility trial was performed using the balance method. Feed mixtures differed in digestible energy content i.e., crude protein, crude fibre and fat. The resulting digestibility coefficients for protein fell within the range of 66.72 − 74.18 %, fat digestibility was in the interval from 88.73 to 89.34 % and crude fibre digestibility was in the range from 27.56 to 34.59 %. Fatty acid profile in intramuscular lipids represents the highest content of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA; 47.72 − 48.51 %), followed by the content of saturated acids (SFA; 33.75 − 33.87 %) and a low content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA; 11.23 − 12.08 %). Hempseed oil cake could be included in rabbits' diet with beneficial effect on carcass quality and can enhance the nutritional quality of rabbit meat with the focus on essential amino acids. The tested blood serum parameters were within the range of the physiological reference values with no statistical differences between experimental groups, except for glucose and cholesterol content. The data on volatile fatty acids (VFA) show that most intensive process was in the caecum of rabbits in the experimental groups EG1 and EG2. All obtained data let us to recommend the inclusion of hempseed cake up to 10 % in rabbit diet without any negative effect on animal welfare, livestock performance and quality of meat. Simple Summary: Rabbits are animals sensitive to alimentary disturbances and various spoilage agents, mostly during the weaning period. For this reason, the use of natural feed additives has become an area of research in rabbit nutrition, mainly with a focus on prevention. The "in vivo" administration of bacteriocins/enterocins shows an increasing potential in the prevention/treatment of animals' diseases. Therefore, our study focused on the preventive potential of the dipeptide enterocin (Ent) A/P against the methicillin-resistant (MR) Staphylococcus epidermidis SE P3/Tr2a strain in rabbit model, determining its effect on the growth performance, phagocytic activity, secretory (s) IgA, and gut microbial composition of rabbits. Ent A/P increased the weight gain of rabbits and its antibacterial effect showed a tendency to stabilize and improve gut microbiota due to reduction of MR staphylococci, total bacteria, and coliforms. The immune-stimulatory effect of Ent A/P was noted due to increased phagocytic activity. Achieved results showed the great potential of Ent A/P application as a feed additive in rabbit nutrition to improve the health and productivity of animals. The present study investigated the effect of the dipeptide enterocin (Ent) A/P on growth, immune response, and intestinal microbiota in rabbits. Eighty-eight rabbits (aged five weeks, M91 meat line, both sexes) were divided into three experimental groups: E (Ent A/P; 50 µL/animal/day for 14 days; between 0–14 days); S (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis SE P3/Tr2a strain; 500 µL/animal/day for 7 days starting at day 14 to day 21); and E + S (Ent A/P between 0–14 days and SE P3/Tr2a strain between 14–21 days) groups, and the control group (C). The additives were administered in drinking water. Administration of Ent A/P lead to an increase in weight gain, reduction of feed conversion; phagocytic activity was stimulated and gut microbiota were optimized due to reduction of coliforms, total bacterial count, and methicillin-resistant staphylococci. The present study investigates the effects of Enterococcus durans ED26E/7 beneficial strain and its enterocin – durancin (Ent) ED26E/7 on selected parameters in rabbits: growth performance, caecal enzymatic activity, jejunal morphometry and meat physico-chemical characteristics. Seventytwo rabbits (aged five weeks, M91 meat line, both sexes) were divided into experimental groups E1 (E. durans ED26E/7 strain; dose 500 μL/animal/day, concentration 109 CFU/mL) and E2 (durancin EntED26E/7; dose 50 μL/animal/day, with activity 12 800 AU/mL) and control group (C). The additives were administered in drinking water for a period of 21 days. All animals remained in good health during the experiment. The highest body weight gain (increase by 1.5% compared to C) was noted in E1 group during ED26E/7 strain application (P<0.001). Both bioactive compounds positively influenced (reduced) the feed conversion ratio (P<0.001). The ED26E/7 strain and its EntED26E/7 application stimulated the activity of most enzymes tested in the caecum; only the amylolytic and inulolytic activity in E2 group decreased during durancin ED26E/7 addition. Both additives, but mainly the ED26E/7 strain, showed a tendency to improve the jejunal morhological parameters till the end of the experiment (day 42). The meat physico-chemical parameters were not negatively influenced by the application of E. durans ED26E/7 strain and its durancin ED26E/7. The diet supplementation with bacteriocinogenic and probiotic E. durans ED26E/7 strain and its EntED26E/7 may improve the growth performance, caecal enzymatic activity and jejunal morphometry of rabbits, without any negative effect on rabbit meat quality. The aim of this study was to find: (1) whether bacteriocin-enterocin Ent A/P applied in rabbits drinking water can have an inhibitory effect on methicillin-resistant S. epidermidis P3/Tr2a; (2) whether application of the P3/Tr2a strain can negatively influence selected parameters and meat quality, and (3) if application of enterocin A/P can reduce possible negative impact of the P3/Tr2a strain. A total of 66 post-weaned hybrid rabbits (meat lines M91 and P91) of both sexes at the age of 35 days were divided into two experimental (EG1; EG2) and one control (CG) groups (22 rabbits in each group). Rabbits were kept in standard metal cages. They were fed with a mixture of a standard diet. At day 14, rabbits in the EG1 were administered with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis P3/Tr2a strain (in drinking water), marked with rifampicin (a dose of 500 µl/animal/day; 1.0 x 105 CFU/ml). Rabbits in the EG2 were administered with Ent A/P (50 µl/animal/day) supplied in drinking water (first 14 days). The rabbits had access to water ad libitum. Since day 22, all animals were fed only the untreated commercial granulated diet for growing rabbits. The experiment lasted for 48 days. Sampling of faecal mixtures per each group was provided at days 0/1, 14, 21 and 48 (end of experiment) to assess staphylococci and Staphylococcus epidermidis P3/Tr2a. At day 56 and at the end of the experiment, carcass and meat quality parameters (pH value 24 h post-mortem, colour lightness, water-holding capacity, protein and fat content, energetic value of the carcass yield) were measured. Methicillin-resistant SE strain did not affect negatively the selected physico-chemical parameters and nutritional quality of rabbit meat, as well as growth performance and the zootechnical parameters. In addition, in rabbits with Ent A/P, the highest daily weight gain was noted. Bacteriocins represent substances of proteinaceous character with antimicrobial spectrum. This in vivo study was designed to reveal whether antimicrobial effect of Enterocin M (produced by non-rabbit origin strain Enteroccocus faecium AL41-CCM8558), in combination with Durancin ED26E/7 substances (produced by non-rabbit origin strain Enteroccocus durans ED26E/7) is able to influence the meat quality of rabbits. A total of 80 post-weaned rabbits, meat line P91 and M91 (aged 35 days, both sexes), were randomly divided into 4 groups (20 animals in each group). Control group without enterocin administration and experimental groups: EG 2 received 50pl of Enterocin M, EG 3 with 50|il Durancin and EG 4 with combination both of substances (50pl of Enterocin M + 50 |il of Durancin/animal/day) water administration for 21 days. Four animals (at the age 21 and 42 days) from each group were slaughtered No clinically noticeable changes in the average body weight of experimental animals were observed. A positive influence of Enterocin M and Durancin was noted on animal health. Enterocin M and Durancin substances did not negatively influenced growth performance and meat quality of selected carcass characteristics and meat quality of broiler rabbits, in general.
