Abstract

The article presents an exploration into the social history of New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania in the early 20th-century, focusing on the cultures of racial violence, law enforcement and regional identity at the time. The author argues that the typical historiographical separation of the North and South regarding social issues and attitudes towards racism and social justice is faulty. Multiple examples are taken from the three states asserting that while the rhetoric surrounding race in the North was distinct from the South their interconnectedness and similarities are more apparent than typically portrayed.

Abstract

The article presents the author's opinion on the pitiful social conditions of America, by referring to the observations of a seven-year-old Black child in an integrated school somewhere in New York State. This seven-year-old recognized the reality of racism in America. The author says that people are frightened by the reality of this country as it stands today. U.S. President George W. Bush has already started his campaign to take away from Black America the jobs in the fields and in the hospitals and in the factories that many people should have. The children who are growing up now will not accept what has happened to their elders. They will fight back.
