Abstract

International audience; The beta decay of $^{151}$Sm was measured by means of a metallic magnetic calorimeter. The measurement and subsequent analysis yielded a beta spectrum with an outstanding high-energy resolution of about 70 eV (FWHM) at 22 keV and a very low energy threshold well below 400 eV. The spectrum exhibited unexpectedly elevated beta emission probabilities at very low energy that we have not been able to reproduce in our theoretical study. The data analysis was thus scrutinized and an independent analysis of the same data set carried out. All new approaches have confirmed the previously found shape of the beta spectrum. The measured spectrum was compared to predictions from an advanced theoretical modeling that includes the atomic exchange effect, precise radiative corrections as well as the realistic nuclear structure that usually plays an important role in first forbidden non-unique transitions.The measured spectrum was then carefully analyzed to determine the maximum beta energy, which was found to be Q = 76.430(68) keV. The dominant beta decay of $^{151}$Sm populates the ground state of $^{151}$Eu, and a weak beta branch populates the first excited state of $^{151}$Eu. From our measurements, the probabilities of these two branches were determined to be 99.31(11)% and 0.69(11)%, respectively.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper we describe experiments on two enriched 40K solutions to accurately determine decay data. The first solution was measured in 2004/2005 by means of a gamma-ray spectrometer with low background and a liquid scintillation (LS) counter to apply the CIEMAT/NIST efficiency tracing method. A combination of results yields an emission probability of the 1461 keV gamma-rays of Pg=0.1030(11) which is lower than current results of data evaluations.The activity concentration of the second solution was also determined by means of LS counting, but here, the CIEMAT/NIST efficiency tracing method as well as the TDCR method were applied. Again, the result was combined with that of independent gamma-ray spectrometry and the gamma-ray emission probability was found to be Pg=0.1029(9) in good agreement with the result obtained from the first solution. A combination of both experiments yields Pg=0.1029(9). The spectra of a TriCarb LS counter were carefully analyzed and a beta minus emission probability Pb- =0.8954(14) was determined. The new results for Pg and Pb- indicate that the overall probability of the decay via electron capture in recent data evaluations is overestimated.The LS counting efficiencies were computed with a stochastic model and up-to-date calculations of the beta spectrum and fractional electron-capture probabilities were used. The final activity result of the second solution is combined with the outcome of a comprehensive isotopic analysis to determine the half-life of 40K which is found to be 1.2536(27) 10^9 years.

Abstract

Organizer: Argentinian Comision Nacional Energia Atomica; International audience; The activity concentration of a $^{60}$Co solution was measured by means of two 4$\pi\beta$-$\gamma$ coincidence counting systems using a liquid scintillation counter and a proportional counter (PC) in the beta channel, respectively. Additional liquid scintillation measurements were carried out and CIEMAT/NIST efficiency tracing as well as the triple-to double coincidence ratio (TDCR) methods were applied to analyse the data. The last two methods require computed beta spectra to determine the counting efficiencies. The results of both 4$\pi\beta$-$\gamma$ coincidence counting techniques are in very good agreement and yield a robust reference value. The initial activity concentration determined with liquid scintillation counting was found to be significantly lower than the results from 4$\pi\beta$-$\gamma$ a coincidence counting. In addition, the results from TDCR and CIEMAT/NIST show some inconsistency. The discrepancies were resolved by applying new beta spectrum calculations for the dominant allowed beta transition of $^{60}$Co. The use of calculations which take screening effects as well as the atomic exchange effect into account leads to good agreement between all four methods; the combination of these techniques delivers an important validation of beta spectra.

Abstract

International audience; Well-type re-entrant ionization chambers (IC) are used in radionuclide metrology for secondary measurements of radioactive sources. Generally this technique is used for solutions of gamma-emitting radionuclides, but was also extended to high-energy beta-emitting radionuclides like 90Y. In this case, the energy transfer to the gas is made through Bremsstrahlung photons. The measurement of gaseous 222Rn sources with an IC was also undertaken in the framework of the Système International de Référence (SIR) of the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM). In this case, we observed an important influence of the thickness of the walls of the glass container of the source. We analysed this effect as the consequence of the direct interaction of high-energy electrons from 214Bi (maximum beta energy of 3.27 MeV) with the counting gas. As the efficiency of the direct ionization of a gas by electrons is several orders of magnitude more important than ionization by Bremsstrahlung, and as energy absorption in the walls of the ampoule is much more sensitive to the thickness of the walls than absorption of the Bremsstrahlung, this could explain the observed phenomenon. It is worth noticing that direct interaction of electrons with the IC gas is never expected when measuring solutions, and this phenomenon was to our knowledge, never addressed in the past. In order to analytically study this phenomenon, we undertook a Monte Carlo simulation of a Vinten 671 IC, with a radon source in a glass vial, where the solid daughters in secular equilibrium with the radon are adsorbed on the internal walls of the gas ampoule. The influence of the glass wall thickness on the response of the IC was studied vs. the wall thickness using the PENELOPE 2016 package and allowed us to determine the acceptable variability of the thickness of the ampoules. Similar simulations were also undertaken with metal gas containers, showing that they could solve measurement problems of 222Rn in the SIR system.

Abstract

International audience; The NUCLEIDE database provides comprehensive and accurate data recommended by the Decay Data Evaluation Project (DDEP). The module NUCLEIDE++, written in C++, and designed to work in conjunction with the GEANT4 Monte Carlo toolkit has been developed to simulate the complete decay scheme for a given radionuclide by randomly selecting the decay pathways, using data from NUCLEIDE. The nuclear de-excitation of the potential daughters can also be treated in the same run. The initial energies of the electron and positron in the case of beta-emitting radionuclides are sampled from spectra calculated with the BetaShape program developed at LNE-LNHB. The aim of this work is to propose to GEANT4 users the possibility to run with the recommended NUCLEIDE data and a more detailed model. The reliability of NUCLEIDE++ is shown by comparing the coincident particles cascades to the ones obtained with PENNUC and GEANT4.

Abstract

International audience; Radioactive strontium isotopes play an important role in environmental radioactivity. Reliable activity standards are required in order to validate radioanalytical techniques and related measurements. In this paper, improved methods for the primary activity standardization of $^{90}$Sr/$^{90}$Y based on liquid scintillation counting are presented. To this end, two methods were used: the CIEMAT/NIST efficiency tracing technique with 3H as a tracer and the triple-to-double coincidence ratio method. Non-negligible discrepancies between the two methods were found when applying existing analysis techniques. A detailed study was carried out to identify and eliminate the causes of these discrepancies.Eventually, excellent agreement between the two methods was obtained. This required advanced beta spectrum calculations which were carried out with a specific version of the BetaShape program taking the atomic exchange effect into account. In addition, it was found that the quench-indicating parameters determined in commercial liquid scintillation counters are biased, which can cause significant problems for the CIEMAT/NIST efficiency tracing method. The effect depends on the counting rate and can be explained by a superposition of the LS spectra generated by $^{90}$Sr/$^{90}$Y and the external standard source.

We have developed a beta spectrometer close to 4π configuration based on silicon detectors. The influence of self-absorption has been studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations and the source preparation technique has been optimized consequently. The measured spectra from 133 Ba and 36 Cl decays have been compared with PENELOPE simulations.

Abstract

International audience; Based on previous study, the calculation of electron capture decays has been improved by considering a more accurate atomic model with precise atomic energies, and different radiative corrections have been tested. The computer code has been revised in order to greatly speed-up the calculation and has then been coupled with the BetaShape code. The influence of the nuclear component has also been explored using a simple nuclear model. All the calculations are compared with precise measurements available in the literature.

Abstract

International audience; The activity concentration of a Ni-63 solution was determined by means of two liquid scintillation counting techniques: the TDCR method and the CIEMAT/NIST efficiency tracing technique. The results of both methods are in excellent agreement, provided that the Ni-63 beta spectrum calculation accounts for the atomic exchange effect. Thus, new beta spectrum calculations resolve a discrepancy that has been found in previous analyses. The influence of the computed beta spectrum on the final uncertainty of the activity concentration is discussed.

Editors Franz-Josef Maringer, Dirk Arnold, Uwe Wätjen.; International audience; From a review of the available literature, a database of experimental shape factors from measured beta spectra was created in previous work. Classical assumptions applied in beta spectra calculations which avoid the determination of the electron and nuclear wave functions were tested by comparison with each measured spectrum present in the database. From this systematic comparison, it was demonstrated that the typical assumption lambda(k)=1 is inappropriate for all forbidden unique transitions. Moreover, the equally common xi-approximation was also proved to be incorrect for about half of the listed first forbidden non unique transitions and for all second non-unique ones. In present work, this study has been performed once again using an improved analytical screening correction. General results from previous study still remain the same. Except for allowed transitions, the mean energies in current nuclear databases are expected to be erroneous. Some selected beta spectra are also given to illustrate these results.

Editors Franz-Josef Maringer, Dirk Arnold, Uwe Wätjen.; International audience; The present paper addresses the calibration of well-type ionization chambers (ICs) used at LNE-LNHB as standard transfer instruments to calibrate hospitals in the case of SIR-Spheres $^{90}$Y resin microspheres (Sirtex, Australia). Developed for interventional oncology, this radiopharmaceutical is directly injected in the liver for cancer treatment via a selective internal radiation therapy. The present work was carried out in the framework of the European project “Metrology for molecular radiotherapy” (MetroMRT). As commonly performed in radionuclide metrology for radiopharmaceuticals, the objective is to ensure the metrological traceability of SIR-Spheres to hospitals. Preceding studies were focused on primary measurements of SIR-Spheres based on the TDCR (Triple to Double Coincidence Ratio) method, applied after the dissolution of the $^{90}$Y-labeled resin microspheres. As $^{90}$Y is a high-energy β$^-$-emitter, the IC response strongly depends on the transport of electrons in the radioactive solution and surroundings (vial, chamber liners and materials). The variability of the IC-response due to the geometry dependence is investigated by means of measurements and Monte Carlo simulations in the case of a Vinten IC. The aim of the present study was also to propose a reliable uncertainty for ICs calibrations for the standard transfer of SIR-Spheres to hospitals.

The advantage of the presented technique relies on the double role of LaBr3:Ce as source of La-138 and detector medium resulting in a relatively efficient counting statistics and unaltered beta energy detection. The experimental results are compared to advanced computational techniques and significant deviation is found below 20 keV with the computational spectrum showing a 5% excess of beta particle relative to the experimental spectrum at 10 keV.

International audience; Metallic magnetic calorimeters are a specific type of cryogenic detectors that have been shown to enable precise measurement of the shape of low energy beta spectra. The aim of their use at LNHB is the determination of the shape factors of beta spectra. The beta source is enclosed in the detector absorber, allowing for very high detection efficiency. It has turned out that the type of source is of crucial importance for the correctness of the measured spectrum. Spectra of 63Ni measured with several sources prepared by drying a NiCl2 solution differ from one another and from theory, whereas spectra measured with electroplated sources are reproducible and agree with theory. With these latter measurements we could confirm the atomic exchange effect down to very low energy (200 eV).

Abstract

Proceedings of the 17th International Conference on Radionuclide Metrology and its Applications (ICRM 2009)7-11 September 2009 • Bratislava, Slovak Republic; International audience; The LNE-LNHB is developing metallic magnetic calorimeters, a specific type of cryogenic detectors, for beta spectrometry. The aim is the determination of the shape factors of beta spectra. Our latest detector has been designed to measure the spectrum of 241Pu, a pure beta emitter with an endpoint energy of 20.8 keV. In this paper, the detection principle of metallic magnetic calorimeters is explained and a detailed description is given of the realization of the detector enclosing a 241Pu source inside the detector absorber. A spectrum resulting from our first measurement is shown and compared with a theoretical spectrum.
