Abstract

In many inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments, the neutron yield and other parameters cannot be completely accounted for with one and two dimensional models. This discrepancy suggests that there are three dimensional effects that may be significant. Sources of these effects include defects in the shells and defects in shell interfaces, the fill tube of the capsule, and the joint feature in double shell targets. Due to their ability to penetrate materials, x rays are used to capture the internal structure of objects. Methods such as computational tomography use x-ray radiographs from hundreds of projections, in order to reconstruct a three dimensional model of the object. In experimental environments, such as the National Ignition Facility and Omega-60, the availability of these views is scarce, and in many cases only consists of a single line of sight. Mathematical reconstruction of a 3D object from sparse views is an ill-posed inverse problem. These types of problems are typically solved by utilizing prior information. Neural networks have been used for the task of 3D reconstruction as they are capable of encoding and leveraging this prior information. We utilize half a dozen, different convolutional neural networks to produce different 3D representations of ICF implosions from the experimental data. Deep supervision is utilized to train a neural network to produce high-resolution reconstructions. These representations are used to track 3D features of the capsules, such as the ablator, inner shell, and the joint between shell hemispheres. Abstract

Three continuum compaction models are calibrated to planar impact data for CeO2 powder and used to predict the shock compaction behavior of CeO2 powder under cylindrically converging shock wave loading. All experiments and computations are performed on powder compacts with an initial pressed density of 4.0 g/cm3 (56% TMD). A magnetically-driven, cylindrically-converging shock compaction experiment is computationally designed using the calibrated compaction models in the multi-physics code FLAG. Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) calculations of impact conditions are performed using a calibrated circuit model in FLAG. The first cylindrical shock compaction experiment is executed using the mobile pulsed power driver PHELIX. In situ areal density measurements of the CeO2 target assembly are performed during the compaction event with proton radiography. Calculations of the late time compaction response of the CeO2 powder under PHELIX compression are greater than 90% accurate using the P-α compaction models calibrated under planar loading. Abstract

The high-speed implosion of a condensed liner is an efficient method to achieve the state of substance characterized by high energy density, temperature, pressure and substance density. The experimental procedure for radiographing the perturbations growing in the cylindrical aluminum liner having the walls 2 mm thick, which is imploded under the effect of 35 MA pulses produced by high-power explosive magnetic disk generator (DEMG), is described. System shielding the X-ray film situated at a distance of ∼40 cm from HE explosive of ∼ 100 kg in the explosive magnetic generator is described in detail. Specially arranged units having low total thickness equivalent to shield the film ∼15 mm of aluminum were used to provide the necessary protection from damage but still allowed the needed picture contrast. The developed procedure demonstrates the efficiency of EMG in the experiments on pulsed hydrodynamics and high-speed implosion of liners. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
