Lateral periodontal cyst is a well-documented but slightly infrequent variant of odontogenic cysts. The common site of occurrence is the mandibular canine and premolar region. These types of cyst are more commonly seen in adults and are associated with or are located lateral to the roots of vital teeth. Radiological assessment reveals unilocular, radiolucent areas. Histological findings confirm the definitive diagnosis. On histopathological examination, it can be ruled out by the presence of lining of a thin cuboidal or stratified squamous nonkeratinized epithelium and the presence of one or more epithelial thickenings or plaques. Botryoid odontogenic cyst is a variant of lateral periodontal cyst, which shows multilocular patterns radiographically and histologically. This variant, in particular, has more recurrence rate. Here, we report a case of lateral periodontal cyst having all the characteristic findings with respect to location, radiological, and histological features, with distinct clinical conduct which was managed by surgical enucleation.

Aphthous ulcers are the most common lesions encountered in the oral cavity. The mild recurrent apthous stomatitis (RAS), is an extremely painful condition. Various treatment modalities are tried for RAS. Alum is also tried and found to be successful. Alum is used in traditional medicine for the treatment of oral ulcers without significant side effect. Aim: To assess the efficacy of alum for the treatment of recurrent aphthous stomatitis. Settings and Design: Longitudinal study was carried out in the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology under institution setting. Methods and Materials: This study was conducted on 50 patients with RAS, aged between 15 and 40 years. The diagnosis of RAS was made based on its clinical appearance and the history provided by the patient. Application of alum on aphthous ulcers was done. Statistical Analysis Used: The data obtained was tabulated and subjected to statistical analysis. Results: In 50 patients reporting to the Department of Oral Medicine with RAS, 70% were female and 30% were male. Majority of cases found in the range of 21–30 years. The majority of patients gave VAS 0 on the second day of application. The rest of the patients gave a VAS 0 on the third day of application. Complete healing of the ulcer was seen in 85% of the patients on third day and the rest of the patients showed healing on fourth day. Conclusions: The results showed that alum significantly reduces the severity of pain and duration of healing without any side effects.

Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of ultrasonography in diagnosing inflammatory changes of masseter muscle in patients having facial cellulitis or abscess clinically. Materials and methods: A total of 20 patients diagnosed clinically as having unilateral cellulitis or abscess of massetric region were selected and subjected to ultrasonography (Medison SA 9900 ultrasonographic machine) for evaluating thickness of masseter muscle on affected and the normal contralateral side of patient. Results: The mean thickness of masseter muscle on affected side was 1.5295, whereas on unaffected side was 1.1745, which clearly shows an increase in thickness of muscle on affected side. Conclusion: Trismus, resultant of soft tissue infections requires different treatment modalities according to the etiology. Thus, a potent diagnostic tool which can minimize the dilemma regarding the treatment selection is warranted. These findings highlight the significance of ultrasonography as important diagnostic tool to rule out the involvement of masseter muscle in inflammatory swelling of facial region.
