This paper uses a sensitivity analysis to quantify the dominant train properties (mass and spacing of wheels and bogies) that contribute to ground-borne vibration generation, with the aim of reducing the complexity of train–track numerical models. This research is significant because ground-borne vibration from railways is a growing problem, particularly in urban areas. Despite this fact, attempting to predict vibration levels is complex because there are many variables that contribute to the overall dynamic response. Therefore, a deterministic approach is commonly used, that ignores many of these variables. Thus, this paper identifies the variables that can be ignored, while highlighting those that are highly influential on vibration generation. For this purpose, a previously validated 2.5D finite elements-boundary elements approach is used to simulate dynamic train–track interaction. It is computed many times for a variety of modelling variables to investigate the effect of each on the ground-borne vibration levels in the far field. It is found that increases in unsprung mass of the train causes a large increase in vibration levels. Furthermore, changes in wheel/bogie spacing and semi-sprung mass are found to have a minimal effect on vibration generation. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The paper herein presents a new model of the interaction between an unbalanced wheel and rail. Acceleration of the wheel and the wheel/rail contact force are the most important parameters depending on the wheel unbalance. In fact, the two parameters increase strongly when the velocity is higher than 200 km/h. This paper considers the problem of modeling railway track substructure. The most commonly used methodology for designing the railway substructure cross section does not considerably differ from that proposed in the 1980s. For the bearing capacity of the subgrade, the currently used design methodology implicitly meets one objective: the stresses transmitted to the subgrade must be compatible with its bearing capacity. The bearing capacity depends on the qualities and thicknesses of the soils that compose the subgrade, from the formation layer to the lower layers. In addition, railway administrations have included additional recommendations based on their experience. During the last decade, finite-element models (FEM) have been shown to be a very useful tool for designing cross sections. These models are often very complex and require a very high computational time to be solved. To reduce this complexity and computational time while remaining faithful to the reality to be modeled, this paper proposes some recommendations to develop a parameterized numerical model in three dimensions within the elastic nonlinear range under the static load of a given railway section. To adequately reproduce the real behavior of materials (elastoplastic) and the contact surfaces between very different materials adequately, artifices to use the model in the elastic range are propsed. In addition, the goodness of this design is analyzed using multilayer numerical models. This model may be a very useful tool for analyzing the behavior of different types of railway cross sections. This research reviews principles behind the dynamic response of rail supports, and introduces a method of analysis to find the maximum response in a realistic setting. Assuming a time-dependent, moving mass with massive wheels is essential, because the ratio of the moving mass to the rail mass is significant. However, the dynamic response of the track is not affected by dynamic properties of the train other than its unsprung mass, because the natural frequencies of the train suspension and track are significantly different. A numerical method is developed to model the dynamic response based on these principles, and applied to the Korean urban transit. The dynamic response includes multiple peaks with a large amplitude range, creating noise while the wheel passes the support. The dynamic impact factor (DIF) for the rail support depends mainly on the stiffness and damping of the rail support. The DIF for the rail moment is below the code value, whether this value is based on numerical analysis or on-site measurements. However, our numerical analysis results in a DIF for support settlement that is greater than the code value, if the damping is less than 3%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to the significant costs and time consumed for track visual inspections, most railway industries rely only on geometry data obtained from automated inspections for the assessments of railway track quality conditions. This is the main limitation of the current practices, which may lead to inappropriate determinations of maintenance and repair schedules. This research attempts to rectify this deficiency by developing a methodology for the establishment of correlations between the track structural conditions and the data obtained from automated inspections. The aim is to provide the possibility of having a rational understanding of the structural defects of track (the causes of track irregularities) without conducting visual inspections. Neural network technique is implemented for this purpose. A vast amount of field data obtained from comprehensive visual and automated inspections of different railways are utilized to develop the neural network models. The results obtained in this research reveals that the neural network technique has a very good capability in establishing correlations between track geometrical defects and track structural problems. The application of the developed models in a number of railway tracks indicates that the proposed methodology is an effective approach in the prediction of track structural defects. A realistic assessment of the whole life cost of rail track foundations requires analysis of the effects of the repeated loadings applied by trains. This paper reports the effects of principal stress rotation (PSR) during cyclic loading on the permanent deformations measured in a series of hollow cylinder tests. The tests were carried out on a number of reconstituted soils selected in order to simulate foundation materials on an existing heavy haul railway line. Typical loadings and track geometry together with dynamic finite-element analyses were used to define representative stress changes to be applied to these soils, which were then tested with and without principal stress rotation during loading. It is shown that principal stress rotation has a significant and deleterious impact on permanent deformation of some materials. Therefore, it is concluded that cyclic triaxial testing, which cannot impose principal stress rotation, will not necessarily give good estimates of the long-term performance of rail track foundations. As PSR cannot be ignored when evaluating permanent displacements of rail track foundations, the use of more appropriate (realistic) testing methods such as the cyclic hollow cylinder or the cyclic simple shear apparatus is required.
