Based on statistical analyses applied to official data from the Digital Atlas of Disasters in Brazil over the last 25 years, we evidenced a consistent intensification in the annual occurrence of natural disasters in the state of Pará, located in the eastern Brazilian Amazon. The quantitative comparison between the averages of the most intense period of disasters (2017 to 2023) and the earlier years (1999 to 2016) revealed a remarkable percentage increase of 473%. Approximately 81% of the state's municipalities were affected, as indicated by disaster mapping. A clear seasonal pattern was observed, with Hydrological disasters (Inundations, Flash floods, and Heavy rainfall) peaking between February and May, while Climatological disasters (Droughts and Forest fires) were most frequent from August to October. The catastrophic impacts on people and the economy were documented, showing a significant rise in the number of homeless individuals and those directly affected, alongside considerable material damage and economic losses for both the public and private sectors. Furthermore, we conducted a comprehensive composite analysis on the tropical ocean–atmosphere dynamic structure that elucidated the various triggering mechanisms of disasters arising from Inundations, Droughts, and Forest fires (on seasonal scale), and Flash floods and Heavy rainfall (on sub-monthly scale) in Pará. The detailed characterization of disasters on a municipal scale is relevant in terms of the scientific contribution applied to the strategic decision-making, planning, and implementation of public policies aimed at early risk management (rather than post-disaster response), which is critical for safeguarding human well-being and strengthening the resilience of Amazonian communities vulnerable to climate change. Our paper reviews recent progress in the study and understanding of observed trends in extreme rainfall events in the Metropolitan Area of São Paulo (MASP). These are discussed in relation to hydrometeorological hazards that trigger natural disasters, such as flash floods, landslides, and droughts, that affect the population and local economies. A review of the most updated literature on rainfall and extremes in the MASP shows a significant increase in the total volume of rainy-season rainfall during the last seven decades. While there were practically no days with heavy rain (more than 50 mm) in the 1950s, these days have been occurring two to five times a year in the last 10 years. This, together with the inappropriate occupation of risky areas, such as slopes and banks of watercourses, leads to inundation, flooding, and landslides. Changes in extremes can be partly due to natural climate variability but can also be related to global warming and/or urbanization. There is ample evidence of an increasing risk of rainfall-related hazards in theMASP. This is particularly so for landslides in vulnerable areas. Exposure will continue to lead to risk increases. ABSTRACT Intraseasonal precipitation, wind, and vertically integrated moisture flux variability were assessed from June to August between 1998 and 2009. To that end, we used daily precipitation data from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission ( TRMM) and ERA-Interim reanalysis. The composites of precipitation anomalies showed that during the intraseasonal enhancement of convective activity over the area assessed, increased precipitation occurs over the northern coast of South America; the opposite is true during the decrease in intraseasonal convective activity. The convective activity over the region of maximum precipitation variance is intraseasonally enhanced during 210 days, whereas the decrease occurs during 194 days. During the days on which the convective activity over the region of maximum precipitation variance was enhanced (decreased) by the Madden-Julian oscillation, the frequency of African easterly waves (AEWs) cases was greater (lower). The most significant average characteristics observed during this period were the displacement of positive precipitation anomalies toward the north and the intensification of the flux toward the tropical North Atlantic Ocean. This pattern disfavours precipitation over the northern coast of South America. On the other hand, during the dry period of Madden-Julian oscillation, there was a decrease in AEWs cases which, although there was negative precipitation anomalies over the northern coast of South America, there were positive anomalies over northwest South America. Therefore, the increase (decrease) in convective activity over the region of maximum precipitation variance favours (disfavours) the frequency of AEWs over this region and, consequently, the precipitation over the northern coast of South America decreases (increases) during the dry season (June to August). This work examines the sources of moisture affecting the semi-arid Brazilian Northeast (NEB) during its pre-rainy and rainy season (JFMAM) through a Lagrangian diagnosis method. The FLEXPART model identifies the humidity contributions to the moisture budget over a region through the continuous computation of changes in the specific humidity along back or forward trajectories up to 10 days period. The numerical experiments were done for the period that spans between 2000 and 2004 and results were aggregated on a monthly basis. Results show that besides a minor local recycling component, the vast majority of moisture reaching NEB area is originated in the south Atlantic basin and that the nearby wet Amazon basin bears almost no impact. Moreover, although the maximum precipitation in the ''Poligono das Secas'' region (PS) occurs in March and the maximum precipitation associated with air parcels emanating from the South Atlantic towards PS is observed along January to March, the highest moisture contribution from this oceanic region occurs slightly later (April). A dynamical analysis suggests that the maximum precipitation observed in the PS sector does not coincide with the maximum moisture supply probably due to the combined effect of the Walker and Hadley cells in inhibiting the rising motions over the region in the months following April.
