Abstract: Recommender systems arose with the goal of helping users search in overloaded information domains (like e-commerce, e-learning or Digital TV). These tools automatically select items (commercial products, educational courses, TV programs, etc.) that may be appealing to each user taking into account his/her personal preferences. The personalization strategies used to compare these preferences with the available items suffer from well-known deficiencies that reduce the quality of the recommendations. Most of the limitations arise from using syntactic matching techniques because they miss a lot of useful knowledge during the recommendation process. In this paper, we propose a personalization strategy that overcomes these drawbacks by applying inference techniques borrowed from the Semantic Web. Our approach reasons about the semantics of items and user preferences to discover complex associations between them. These semantic associations provide additional knowledge about the user preferences, and permit the recommender system to compare them with the available items in a more effective way. The proposed strategy is flexible enough to be applied in many recommender systems, regardless of their application domain. Recommender systems arose in view of the information overload present in numerous domains. The so-called content-based recommenders offer products similar to those the users liked in the past. However, due to the use of syntactic similarity metrics, these systems elaborate overspecialized recommendations including products very similar to those the user already knows. In this paper, we present a strategy that overcomes overspecialization by applying reasoning techniques borrowed from the Semantic Web. Thanks to the reasoning, our strategy discovers a huge amount of knowledge about the user's preferences, and compares them with available products in a more flexible way, beyond the conventional syntactic metrics. Our reasoning-based strategy has been implemented in a recommender system for Interactive Digital Television, with which we checked that the proposed technique offers accurate enhanced suggestions that would go unnoticed in the traditional approaches. Abstract: Recommender systems aim at solving the problem of information overload by selecting items (commercial products, educational assets, TV programs, etc.) that match the consumers’ interests and preferences. Recently, there have been approaches to drive the recommendations by the information stored in electronic health records, for which the traditional strategies applied in online shopping, e-learning, entertainment and other areas have several pitfalls. This paper addresses those problems by introducing a new filtering strategy, centered on the properties that characterize the items and the users. Preliminary experiments with real users have proved that this approach outperforms previous ones in terms of consumers’ satisfaction with the recommended items. Abstract: Recommender systems in online shopping automatically select the most appropriate items to each user, thus shortening his/her product searching time in the shops and adapting the selection as his/her particular preferences evolve over time. This adaptation process typically considers that a user''s interest in a given type of product always decreases with time from the moment of the last purchase. However, the necessity of a product for a user depends on both the nature of the own item and the personal preferences of the user, being even possible that his/her interest increases over time from the purchase. Some existing approaches focus only on the first factor, missing the point that the influence of time can be very different for different users. To solve this limitation, we present a filtering strategy that exploits the semantics formalized in an ontology in order to link items (and their features) to time functions. The novelty lies within the fact that the shapes of these functions are corrected by temporal curves built from the consumption stereotypes into which each user fits best. Our preliminary experiments involving real users have revealed significant improvements of recommendation precision with regard to previous time-driven filtering approaches. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Digital TV (DTV) bears much potential for e-commerce, but most of it remains underexploited due to the lack of systematic approaches to the provision of interactive applications. Working on top of an existing recommender system, this paper presents mechanisms to automatically compose applications that provide personalized commercial functionalities to the users. The proposal addresses specific concerns of DTV environments, with special attention to achieving good personalization quality and furnishing useful interactions when there is no return channel permanently available for bidirectional communication. Automatic recommenders are now omnipresent in e-commerce websites, as selecting and offering to users products they may be interested in can considerably increase sales revenue. The most popular recommendation strategy is currently considered to be the collaborative filtering technique, based on offering to the user who will receive the recommendation items that were appealing to other individuals with similar preferences (the so-called neighbors). On the other hand, its principal obstacle is the sparsity problem, related to the difficulty to find overlappings in ratings when there are many items. As the product catalogue of these sites gets more and more diverse, a new problem has arisen that happens when users share likings for lots of products (for which they are reckoned to be neighbors) but they differ in products similar to the one that is being considered for recommendation. They are fake neighbors. Narrowing the range of products on which similarities between users are sought can help to avoid this, but it usually causes a worsening of the sparsity problem because the chances of finding overlappings gets lower. In this paper, a new strategy is proposed based on semantic reasoning that aims to improve the neighborhood formation in order to overcome the aforementioned fake neighborhood problem. Our approach is aimed at making more flexible the search for semantic similarities between different products, and thus not require users to rate the same products in order to be compared.
