バークレー神学で展開される普遍贖罪論は、正統派カルヴィニズムの二重予定説に対抗する形で、「内なる光」、「主の訪れの日」、「反抗しない、受動性」という三つの概念によって展開される。しかし、特にこの「受動性」という概念を巡って、バークレー神学の評価は大きく分かれる。本稿では、彼の思想の持つ意義を、当時の神学的思想的状況の中で批判的に考察することによって解明する。考察の結果として分かるのは、「反抗しない」という事態は「信仰さえも求めない」程に徹底した受動性を意味し、神の働きかけに対して魂の扉を開けるという積極的意義を持つことである。それ故、フォックスと同様に、彼はあくまで神の働きかけを深い沈黙の内に待ち望むべきと説くのである。よって、バークレー神学は、消極的態度の根源であるとの従来の評価とは異なり、クエーカーの素朴なメッセージを保持することに重要な役割を果たしたと言えるだろう。, The universal redemption in Barclay's theology is constituted of three concepts:"inward light", "the day of visitation", and "passiveness", so as to refute the double predestination of orthodox Calvinism. Especially because of the intricate idea of "passiveness", opinion is divided in academic fields as to whether Barclay really made a large contribution to the Quaker movement. In this paper, I will clarify the meaning of his thoughts by critically examining them in comparison with contemporary theologies and philosophies. Through the examination, we will find out that the Quakers'passiveness described in Barclay's theology is such a passive attitude that they forsake their will to have faith in God. This has a great merit of opening the doors of their hearts for God, and so Barclay, as well as Fox, persists in his efforts to persuade every person into waiting silently for the work of inward light. Therefore, we can say that unlike the conventional opinion saying it was the main cause of spiritual passivity, Barclay's theology played an important role in preserving the simple message of Quakerism., 論文(Article)
