The implications of ocean acidification are acute for calcifying organisms, notably tropical reef corals, for which accretion generally is depressed and dissolution enhanced at reduced seawater pH. We describe year‐long experiments in which back reef and fore reef (17‐m depth) communities from Moorea, French Polynesia, were incubated outdoors under pCO2 regimes reflecting endpoints of representative concentration pathways (RCPs) expected by the end the century. Incubations were completed in three to four flumes (5.0 × 0.3 m, 500 L) in which seawater was refreshed and circulated at 0.1 m s−1, and the response of the communities was evaluated monthly by measurements of net community calcification (NCC) and net community productivity (NCP). For both communities, NCC (but not NCP) was affected by treatments and time, with NCC declining with increasing pCO2, and for the fore reef, becoming negative (i.e., dissolution was occurring) at the highest pCO2 (1067–1433 μatm, RCP8.5). There was scant evidence of community adjustment to reduce the negative effects of ocean acidification, and inhibition of NCC intensified in the back reef as the abundance of massive Porites spp. declined. These results highlight the risks of dissolution under ocean acidification for coral reefs and suggest these effects will be most acute in fore reef habitats. Without signs of amelioration of the negative effects of ocean acidification during year‐long experiments, it is reasonable to expect that the future of coral reefs in acidic seas can be predicted from their current known susceptibility to ocean acidification. Some of the best-known disturbances affecting coral reefs are storms, yet their impacts on light are poorly known. Here, we describe the underwater light on a reef off St. John, US Virgin Islands (18°18'37.04N, 63°43'23.17W), during two hurricanes and multiple tropical waves that occurred between 17 August 2017 and 30 November 2017. Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was recorded at 19-m depth and at the surface, and rainfall was measured as a cause of turbidity affecting underwater light. Hurricanes Irma and Maria reduced maximum daily underwater photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) to < 14 [micro]mol photons m.sup.-2 s.sup.-1 (< 0.001% of surface PPFD) and, from 1 September to 30 November, were associated with rainfall that was higher (107 cm) than has been recorded over this period since 1972. These reductions in underwater PPFD are unprecedented since at least 2014, and the corresponding values of the diffuse attenuation coefficients (K.sub.d-PAR 0.268-0.426) are among the lowest recorded on a coral reef. Our study reveals the capacity for hurricanes to render a photic habitat temporarily aphotic, and over 69 days (and relative to 2016), to contribute to a 20% reduction in summed, daily integrated underwater PPFD. Octocorals have increased in abundance on a number of Caribbean reefs, but this trend has largely been reported with functional group or genus resolution. A species-level analysis of octocoral communities in St. John, US Virgin Islands was conducted to better understand how this taxon will respond to changing conditions based on their synecology at two sites that are 1.5 km apart and differ in physical conditions. East Cabritte is characterized by moderate wave energy, low sedimentation, and clear water, while contrasting conditions characterize Europa Bay. Surveys conducted in 2014 and 2015 showed that the abundance and size of adult octocorals differed between sites, with taller and denser communities at East Cabritte than Europa Bay (mean height of 32 versus 20 cm; 18 versus 8 colonies m.sup.-2). Octocoral diversity and evenness were similar between sites, although multivariate octocoral community structure differed between sites regardless of whether octocorals were resolved to genera or species. Genus-resolution masked differences between sites for speciose genera like Eunicea. The broad overlap in species representation at both sites suggests that diversity is less responsive than community structure to differing environmental conditions, perhaps because the ecological niches of these species are broad. For more than a century, coral reefs have been exposed to increasing anthropogenic disturbances that have profoundly altered their community structure. These perturbations continue to challenge coral reefs in new ways as ecological paradigms are recast in the Anthropocene Epoch 1. In recent decades, macroalgal blooms have blighted Caribbean reefs 2 , but the appearance of aggressive peyssonnelioid algal crusts (PAC) that are rapidly increasing in abundance to become dominant members of the benthos on Caribbean and Indo-Pacific reefs is a novel phenomenon in tropical seas 3. By pre-empting vacant space, overgrowing corals, deterring the settlement of coral larvae, and favouring a phase transition from coral to algae 4 , PAC are likely to accelerate the decline in dominance of corals on global reefs (Figure 1). Edmunds et al. highlight the rising threat to coral reefs of peyssonnelioid algal crusts. In this study, fore reef coral communities were exposed to high pCO2 for a year to explore the relationship between net accretion (G net) and community structure (planar area growth). Coral reef communities simulating the fore reef at 17-m depth on Mo'orea, French Polynesia, were assembled in three outdoor flumes (each 500 l) that were maintained at ambient (396 µatm), 782 µatm, and 1434 µatm pCO2, supplied with seawater at 300 l h−1, and exposed to light simulating 17-m depth. The communities were constructed using corals from the fore reef, and the responses of massive Porites spp., Acropora spp., and Pocillopora verrucosa were assessed through monthly measurements of G net and planar area. High pCO2 depressed G net but did not affect colony area by taxon, although the areas of Acropora spp. and P. verrucosa summed to cause multivariate community structure to differ among treatments. These results suggest that skeletal plasticity modulates the effects of reduced G net at high pCO2 on planar growth, at least over a year. The low sensitivity of the planar growth of fore reef corals to the effects of ocean acidification (OA) on net calcification supports the counterintuitive conclusion that coral community structure may not be strongly affected by OA. The negative implications of the thermal sensitivity of reef corals became clear with coral bleaching throughout the Caribbean in the 1980’s, and later globally, with the severe El Niño of 1998 and extensive seawater warming in 2005. These events have substantially contributed to declines in coral cover, and therefore the El Niño of 2016 raised concerns over the implications for coral reefs; on the Great Barrier Reef these concerns have been realized. A different outcome developed in Mo’orea, French Polynesia, where in situ seawater temperature from 15 March 2016 to 15 April 2016 was an average of 0.4°C above the upper 95% CI of the decadal mean temperature, and the NOAA Degree Heating Weeks (DHW) metric supported a Level 1 bleaching alert (DHW ≥ 4.0). Starting 1 September 2016 and for the rest of the year (122 d), in situ seawater temperature was an average of 0.4°C above the 95% CI of long-term values, although DHW remained at zero. Minor coral bleaching (0.2–2.6% of the coral) occurred on the outer reef (10-m and 17-m depth) in April 2016, by May 2016 it had intensified to affect 1.3–16.8% of the coral, but by August 2016, only 1.4–3.0% of the coral was bleached. Relative to the previous decade, recruitment of scleractinians to settlement tiles on the outer- (10 m) and back- (2 m) reef over 2016/17 was high, both from January 2016 to August 2016, and from August 2016 to January 2017, with increased relative abundances of pocilloporids on the outer reef, and acroporids in the back reef. The 2016 El Niño created a distinctive signature in seawater temperature for Mo’orea, but it did not cause widespread coral bleaching or mortality, rather, it was associated with high coral recruitment. While the 2016 El Niño has negatively affected other coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific, the coral communities of Mo’orea continue to show signs of resilience, thus cautioning against general statements regarding the effects of the 2015/16 El Niño on coral reefs in the region. Since about 2000, octocorals on the shallow reefs of St. John, US Virgin Islands, have increased in abundance to form dense stands analogous to terrestrial forests. In this study, the ecology of octocoral forests was explored by testing for an effect of their canopies on the light regime and benthic invertebrate community in the understory habitat. Octocoral forests at five sites (7–13 m depth) were quantified on a spatial scale of meters by the height and density of octocoral colonies. Their effects on the understory habitat were evaluated through measurements of downwelling light, benthic invertebrate community structure, and the photophysiology (i.e., induction time) of the common coral, Porites astreoides (Lamarck, 1816). Octocoral forests composed of dense (> 5 octocorals m−2) and tall (mean height of 42 cm) octocoral colonies created an understory habitat characterized by flashes of bright light (i.e., sunflecking). Within the understory habitat at two of three study sites, the community structure of benthic invertebrates was modified by the octocoral canopy, but it remained unaffected at a third site. A test for the effects of sunflecking on the induction time of P. astreoides found no difference between colonies in the understory versus the open reef habitat. These results do not support the notion that the physiological phenotype of autotrophs in the understory habitat is modified to exploit sunflecking. The analysis of the benthic invertebrates in the understory habitat suggests that octocoral forests can change the community structure of this group of organisms, relative to the open reef. The causes of this change are unclear, but its absence at the most sheltered study site suggests that water motion may be a contributing factor. The article discusses the results of a study that examines the effect of light reflected from dense growths of macroalgae on the photophysiology of scleractinian corals on the shallow back reef of Moorea, French Polynesia. A cosine-corrected sensor detected photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). The increase in photochemical efficiency suggests that Pocillopora verrucosa modifies its photophysiological performance in tissue adjacent to low reflectance (LR) surfaces.

I tested the hypothesis that the effects of high pCO2 and temperature on massive Porites spp. (Scleractinia) are modified by heterotrophic feeding (zooplanktivory). Small colonies of massive Porites spp. from the back reef of Moorea, French Polynesia, were incubated for 1 month under combinations of temperature (29.3°C vs. 25.67deg;C), pCO2 (41.6 vs. 81.5 Pa), and feeding regimes (none vs. ad libitum access to live Artemia spp.), with the response assessed using calcification and biomass. Area-normalized calcification was unaffected by pCO2, temperature, and the interaction between the two, although it increased 40% with feeding. Biomass increased 35% with feeding and tended to be higher at 25.6°C compared to 29.3°C, and as a result, biomass-normalized calcification statistically was unaffected by feeding, but was depressed 12-17% by high pCO2, with the effect accentuated at 25.6°C. These results show that massive Porites spp. has the capacity to resist the effects on calcification of 1 month exposure to 81.5 Pa pCO2 through heterotrophy and changes in biomass. Area-normalized calcification is sustained at high pCO2 by a greater biomass with a reduced biomass-normalized rate of calcification. Abstract: The benthic community structure of the shallow reefs of St. John, US Virgin Islands, was studied from 1992 to 2007 to test the hypotheses that the abundances of non-scleractinian invertebrates have changed, and further, that the changes are associated with variation in the percentage cover of scleractinian coral and macroalgae. The study utilized photoquadrats (0.25m2) from fringing reefs (7–9m depth) characterized by igneous boulders and low (<5%) coral cover, and results from six sites were pooled to describe these reefs as a single habitat. Photoquadrats were analyzed biennially for the abundance of invertebrates, particularly those belonging to four well represented classes (Anthozoa, Demospongiae, Echinoidea, and Polychaeta), as well as the cover of scleractinians and macroalgae. Overall, the combined (multivariate) abundance of 30 invertebrate taxa changed over time, the combined (multivariate) abundance of the four invertebrate classes changed over time, and the individual (univariate) abundance of anthozoans, sponges, and echinoids changed over time. Throughout the study, coral cover remained <5%, and while it varied significantly, it did not display a consistent trajectory of change; in contrast, the cover of macroalgae increased throughout the study. While it is unsurprising that the abundances of invertebrates changed over 15y, notably they varied even though coral cover remained stable, in only a few cases were they related positively to macroalgal cover, and in most cases it was members of the suspension feeding guild that became more abundant. These outcomes suggest that: (1) benthic invertebrates on the shallow reefs of St. John may be more strongly influenced by regional (e.g., larva supply) than local (e.g., coral cover) conditions, (2) Caribbean reefs have changed more since the early 1990s than can be inferred from variation in cover of coral and macroalgae, and (3) suspension feeding invertebrates have become more common on shallow fringing reefs in at least one location. On Caribbean reefs, a striking trend of the last 25 years has been the decline in cover of the framework-building coral Motastraea annularis, a species that has dominated reefs throughout the region for millennia. Clearly, such losses are important ecologically, but to evaluate their significance fully, they need to be placed in the context of the proximal causes and balanced against the potential for gains in cover through growth and recruitment. In this study, a population of M. annularis in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, was censused annually from 1988 to 2003 to quantify coral cover and construct a size-based demographic model. The model was developed to explore the mechanisms of change in coral cover and to ascertain likely trajectories for future population growth. Over the study period, the cover of M. annularis declined from 41% in 1988, to ~12% by 1999 (a 72% decline) but remained unchanged statistically for the last five years of the study. Between 1988 and 2003, colony abundances declined by 57% (from 47 colonies/m² to 20 colonies/m²), and the losses were driven mostly by the death and fission of medium to large colonies (i.e., ≥ = 151 cm²). By 2003, the population had proportionally more small colonies (70% were ≤50 cm²) and fewer large colonies (3% were >250 cm²) than in 1988 (60% and 6%, respectively), and the changes in population structure had accelerated ≥=14% in terms of the rate of change in population size and the time necessary to attain equilibrium of colony size structure. Importantly, this analysis revealed an ongoing and imminent population decline coincident with the recent period of apparently stable coral cover. Fifty-year projections indicate the strong likelihood of extirpation of M. annularis at this particular site in St. John (in contrast to a continuation of constant low cover) and suggest that the 1988 population structure cannot be restored by recruitment. Peyssonnelid algal crusts (PAC) have rapidly spread on coral reefs throughout the Caribbean since 2010 and have become dominant space holders in multiple locations. In 2019, PAC covered 31–86% of the shallow reefs (< 6-m depth) at two sites in St. John, US Virgin Islands, but within halos around aggregates of the echinoid, Diadema antillarum , PAC was absent and small corals were common. To test the hypothesis that the density of small corals is greater in Diadema halos versus on adjacent substrata, and that this effect is accentuated by high coverage of PAC, the shallow reefs of St. John were surveyed in July/August 2019 and January 2020. Densities of small corals (pooled among taxa) in Diadema halos were equal to, or greater than, densities on adjacent substrata, and were highest in Diadema halos adjacent to areas with high coverage of PAC. Where the cover of PAC was ≥ ~ 10%, the mean (± SE) density of small corals was 23.3 ± 2.1 colonies m−2 in Diadema halos, but was 67% lower at 7.5 ± 1.2 colonies m−2 on adjacent substrata; where the cover of PAC was < ~10%, densities of small corals were nearly identical in Diadema halos (9.1 ± 0.9 colonies m−2) and on adjacent substrata (9.0 ± 1.1 colonies m−2). Similar results were obtained when the analyses were repeated for the common corals, Porites spp., Siderastrea radians , and S. siderea. Several species of crustose coralline algae (CCA) and their associated microbial biofilms play important roles in determining the settlement location of scleractinian corals on tropical reefs. In recent decades, peyssonnelid algal crusts (PAC) have become spatial dominants across large areas of shallow Caribbean reefs, where they appear to deter the recruitment of scleractinians. Our genetic investigations of PAC in St. John, US Virgin Islands, amplifying the large-subunit ribosomal RNA and psbA protein D1 marker genes, revealed them to be identical to Ramicrusta textilis previously reported overgrowing corals in Jamaica. Specimens of PAC sampled from the Honduras were likewise identical, confirming that this crustose alga inhabits the easternmost and westernmost regions of the Caribbean. We also analysed 16S rDNA tag amplicon libraries of the biofilms associated with PAC and sympatric CCA, which is favoured for coral settlement. Our results show that the microbial communities on PAC (vs. CCA) are characterized by significantly lower numbers of the epibiotic bacterial genus Pseudoalteromonas, which facilitates the recruitment and settlement of marine invertebrates. From these data, we infer that PAC are therefore unlikely to be attractive as settlement sites for coral larvae. Given the significant ecological change anticipated on these reefs due to increasing cover of PAC, there is an urgent need to further investigate competitive interactions between PAC and scleractinian corals, and elucidate the role of PAC and their associated microbiomes in accentuating phase shifts from coral to algae on tropical reefs. This study tested the hypothesis that sponge assemblages on the reefs of St. John, US Virgin Islands (18.315°N, 64.716°W), changed from 1992 to 2017. Sponges were identified to species or genus in photoquadrats and were quantified at 2–3 y intervals by density, with linear dimensions used to estimate volume as a proxy for biomass. From 1992 to July 2017, overall sponge density (pooled among taxa) increased, although trends varied among the most common species for which density increased (four species), decreased (one species), or showed no linear relationship with time (2 species). Hurricanes Irma and Maria caused a 51% decline in overall sponge density from July to November 2017, with density in November 2017 being 31% lower than in 1992. For the common sponges, densities of 6 declined by 82–100% between July and November 2017, but densities in November 2017 were 13–736% higher than in 1992 for four species, and 47–100% lower than in 1992 for 3 species. Sponge volume did not change linearly between 1992 and November 2017, but it was reduced by 54% following the hurricanes. Multivariate variation over time in benthic community structure was not strongly associated with sponge density alone, although a significant association with rainfall highlighted the potential roles of this environmental factor in directly, or indirectly, mediating changes in community structure. Many Caribbean reefs have experienced a phase-shift in community structure, the principle features being a decline in coral cover and an increase in macroalgal biomass. However, one Jamaican reef—Dairy Bull on the north shore near Discovery Bay—is once again dominated by scleractinian corals and several key species have returned. Living coral cover at 6-8 m depth at Dairy Bull has doubled over the past 9 years and is now ∼54%. The absolute cover of Acropora cervicornis was <1% in 1995, but increased to ∼11% by January 2004. During this time the cover of macroalgae decreased by 90%, from 45 to 6%. Major tropical storms are destructive phenomena with large effects on the community dynamics of multiple biomes. On coral reefs, their impacts have been described for decades, leading to the expectation that future storms should have effects similar to those recorded in the past. This expectation relies on the assumption that storm intensities will remain unchanged, and the impacted coral reef communities are similar to those of the recent past; neither assumption is correct. This study quantified the effects of two category five hurricanes on the reefs of St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, where 31 yr of time‐series analyses reveal chronic coral mortality, increasing macroalgal abundance, and five major hurricanes that caused acute coral mortality. Contextualized by these trends, the effects of the most recent storms, Hurricanes Irma and Maria (September 2017), on coral cover were modest. While mean absolute coral cover declined 1–4% depending on site, these effects were not statistically discernable. Following decades of increasing abundance of macroalgae, this functional group responded to the recent hurricanes with large increases in abundance on both absolute and relative scales. Coral reefs throughout the tropics have experienced large declines in the abundance of scleractinian corals over the last few decades, and some reefs are becoming functionally dominated by animal taxa other than scleractinians. This phenomenon is striking on many shallow reefs in the tropical western Atlantic, where arborescent octocorals now are numerically and functionally dominant. Octocorals are one of several taxa that have been overlooked for decades in analyses of coral reef community dynamics, and our understanding of why octocorals are favoured (whereas scleractinians are not) on some modern reefs, and how they will affect the function of future reef communities, is not commensurate with the task of scientifically responding to the coral reef crisis. We summarize the biological and ecological features predisposing octocorals for success under contemporary conditions, and focus on those features that could have generated resistance and resilience of octocoral populations to environmental change on modern reefs. There is a rich set of opportunities for rapid advancement in understanding the factors driving the success of octocorals on modern reefs, but we underscore three lines of inquiry: (1) the functional implications of strongly mixotrophic, polytrophic, and plastic nutrition, (2) the capacity to recruit at high densities and maintain rapid initial rates of vertical growth, and (3) the emergent properties associated with dense animal forests at high colony densities.
