The reduction of construction and demolition waste (C&DW) has a significant impact on the sustainable development of the construction industry. Differentiated reduction management policy is the key to C&DW reduction management. Based on the calculation of C&DW generation, this paper studies the temporal and spatial evolution characteristics, heterogeneity of C&DW with economic growth, and driving factors of C&DW generation in 30 provinces from 2007 to 2018 by using the methods of standard deviation ellipse model, environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) and geographic detector. The results show that the C&DW generation in China shows an increasing trend, "low in the west, and high in the East" and "high in the South and low in the north," with significant regional differences. The temporal and spatial distribution of C&DW generation shows a "northeast southwest" trend, and this pattern has a trend of changing to "due north - due south"; C&DW generation increases with the economic growth, and the proportion of "inverted N" provinces is large, which is in the stage of continuous increase in the C&DW generation; The economic output effect of construction industry is the most important factor affecting the spatial distribution of C&DW generation. The impact of C&DW generation in each province has shifted from the single core driving effect of economy to the common guidance of economy and environmental protection. Natural disasters, new urbanization, and urban renewal activities generated a large amount of construction and demolition waste (C&DW), and managing C&DW has become an urgent problem to be solved in the construction of "Zero-waste cities." Based on the calculation of C&DW generation in China from 2005 to 2019, this study explored spatial heterogeneity and factors influencing C&DW in China by Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis (ESDA) and Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) method. The results showed that C&DW generation in China increased every year, and the overall distribution was characterized as "high in the east and low in the west," with distinct regional differences. The generation intensity of C&DW in China showed a decreasing trend every year. The regions with rapid growth of C&DW generation were concentrated in the eastern coastal areas, and there was significant spatial heterogeneity in the growth trend. There is a significant spatial autocorrelation in C&DW generation in China. The factors of population size, per capita gross domestic product, and the scale of the construction industry played a positive role in promoting C&DW generation in each province, whereas labor efficiency played a negative role inhibiting C&DW generation, which has a significant temporal and spatial heterogeneity. Purpose: The growth of the Chinese economy has resulted in a significant increase in construction and demolition waste (CDW), and regional differences in CDW generation are gradually increasing. The purpose of this study is to investigate the regional differences in CDW generation and the driving factors that influence CDW generation in different areas of China. To provide a systematic advisement for local governments to select the appropriate policy, reduce CDW generation. Design/methodology/approach: The generation of CDW was calculated by region, based on the area estimation method, from 2005 to 2018. The relationship between CDW generation and economic development, and the driving factors of CDW generation in different regions of China, was investigated using the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) model and the STIRPAT theoretical model. Findings: CDW generation of China increased at the average annual growth rate of 10.86% from 2005 to 2018. The main areas of CDW generation were concentrated in the eastern and central regions, while the proportion of CDW generation in the northeast region decreased gradually, and the changes varied significantly across different regions. The EKC between CDW generation and economic development was established for the whole country, North China, Northeast China, East China, Central South China, Southwest China and Northwest China. Three main factors based on the STIRPAT theoretical model were identified and explained into a framework to reduce CDW generation. The results provided a useful theoretical basis and data support guide for devising effective policies and regulations for the Chinese context. Practical implications: The findings from this study can ultimately support policymakers and waste managers in formulating effective policies for waste management strategies and CDW-specific legislation. Additionally, it can help the coordinated reduction of CDW generation across regions in China and can support construction enterprises (in their development strategies), similar developing economies and foreign firms planning to operate in China. In this paper, the province construction and demolition waste (CDW) generation in China from 2005 to 2018 is calculated by using the area estimation method. Together with the use of the gravity model and the social network analysis method (SNA), the characteristics and effects of the spatial correlation structure network of China's province construction and demolition waste generation are studied. It has been found that from 2005 to 2018, the construction and demolition waste in China had seen a significant rise, and the spatial difference in province generation is significant. During that time, China's inter-provincial construction and demolition waste generation demonstrated significant characteristics of a spatial correlation network with a complex network hierarchy and showed a trend of year-by-year increase in its overall network density and number of correlation. In this spatial connection network, nine provinces, including Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Shandong, Hubei and Guangdong, played a core role as "bridges", Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Guangdong, Shandong, Fujian and Zhejiang provinces are "beneficiaries", Chongqing, Tianjin, Hubei, Anhui, Sichuan, Henan, Jiangxi, Hunan and Hebei are "brokers" while other provinces are "the damaged". Indexes such as network density, network hierarchy and network efficiency all have a significant impact on the national construction and demolition waste generation intensity. The reduction of network density, the improvement of network hierarchy and network efficiency can significantly reduce the difference in construction and demolition waste generation intensity. To explore the spatial network structure characteristics and driving effects of carbon emission intensity in China's construction industry, this paper measures the carbon emission data of China's construction industry in various provinces from 2006 to 2017 and then combines the modified gravity model and social network analysis method to deeply analyze the spatially associated network structure characteristics and driving effects of the carbon emission intensity in China's construction industry. The results show that the regional differences of the carbon emissions of the construction industry are significant, and the carbon emission intensity of the construction industry shows a fluctuating trend. The overall network of carbon emission intensity shows an obvious "core-edge" state, and the hierarchical network structure is gradually broken. Economically developed provinces generally play a leading role in the network and play an intermediary role to guide other provinces to develop together with them. Among the network blocks, most of the blocks play the role of "brokers". The block with the leading economic development has a strong influence on the other blocks.
