Neuroscience is a combination of different scientific disciplines which investigate the nervous system for understanding of the biological basis. Recently, applications to the diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's disease have become very promising by considering different statistical regression models. However, well-known statistical regression models may give misleading results for the diagnosis of the neurodegenerative diseases when experimental data contain outlier observations that lie an abnormal distance from the other observation. The main achievements of this study consist of a novel mathematics-supported approach beside statistical regression models to identify and treat the outlier observations without direct elimination for a great and emerging challenge in humankind, such as neurodegenerative diseases. By this approach, a new method named as CMTMSOM is proposed with the contributions of the powerful convex and continuous optimization techniques referred to as conic quadratic programing. This method, based on the mean-shift outlier regression model, is developed by combining robustness of M-estimation and stability of Tikhonov regularization. We apply our method and other parametric models on Parkinson telemonitoring dataset which is a real-world dataset in Neuroscience. Then, we compare these methods by using well-known method-free performance measures. The results indicate that the CMTMSOM method performs better than current parametric models. The world is moving towards a environmental restricted scenario where excellence and growth in business is contingent upon good governance and excellent green sustainability related policies, strategies and long-term values to stay ahead in competition. Green supply chain management (GSCM) practices play an essential role in shaping the way of offering environmental sustainable products and services to customers. Existing research insists that multiple pressure push organizations to navigate towards 'eco design', 'green purchasing' and 'cooperation with customers' leading to green supply chain management. But how these factors exactly impact the organisational performance based on green supply chain management is being explored in this research. Hypothesis developed is tested by using multivariate canonical correlation analysis to model the regression relationship of 54 manufacturing organizations. Green purchasing and eco-design are the main contributors of GSCM's organisational performance. Cooperation with customer as major roadblock for organisational's performance and requires management, to ponder over for improved results. The findings coincide with published research articles that were conducted in developing countries, such as Brazil and Jordan, to ensure environmental sustainability with the integration of GSCM practices. Spatial technologies offer high flexibility to handle substantial amount of spatial data and wide range of modelling capabilities. Remotely sensed data are the most significant data source used in spatial technologies. However, it is often associated with uncertainties due to atmospheric effects (i.e. absorption and scattering by atmospheric gases and aerosols). Methods based on rigorous treatment of radiative transfer models still have some drawbacks in the inversion of top of atmospheric reflectance values to surface reflectance values on large numbers of satellite images. In this paper, our aim is to represent a more flexible (adaptive) approach for the regional atmospheric correction by employing nonparametric regression splines within the frame of inverse problems and modern techniques of continuous optimization. To achieve this objective, atmospheric correction models obtained through conic multivariate adaptive regression splines, which is an alternative method to multivariate adaptive regression splines by constructing a penalized residual sum of squares as a Tikhonov regularization problem, are applied on a set of satellite images in order to convert the top of atmospheric reflectance values into surface reflectance values. Ground Motion Prediction Equations (GMPEs) are empirical relationships which are used for determining the peak ground response at a particular distance from an earthquake source. They relate the peak ground responses as a function of earthquake source type, distance from the source, local site conditions where the data are recorded and finally the depth and magnitude of the earthquake. In this article, a new prediction algorithm, called Conic Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (CMARS), is employed on an available dataset for deriving a new GMPE. CMARS is based on a special continuous optimization technique, conic quadratic programming. These convex optimization problems are very well-structured, resembling linear programs and, hence, permitting the use of interior point methods. The CMARS method is performed on the strong ground motion database of Turkey. Results are compared with three other GMPEs. CMARS is found to be effective for ground motion prediction purposes. Multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) has become a popular data mining (DM) tool due to its flexible model building strategy for high dimensional data. Compared to well-known others, it performs better in many areas such as finance, informatics, technology and science. Many studies have been conducted on improving its performance. For this purpose, an alternative backward stepwise algorithm is proposed through Conic-MARS (CMARS) method which uses a penalized residual sum of squares for MARS as a Tikhonov regularization problem. Additionally, by modifying the forward step of MARS via mapping approach, a time efficient procedure has been introduced by S-FMARS. Inspiring from the advantages of MARS, CMARS and S-FMARS, two hybrid methods are proposed in this study, aiming to produce time efficient DM tools without degrading their performances especially for large datasets. The resulting methods, called SMARS and SCMARS, are tested in terms of several performance criteria such as accuracy, complexity, stability and robustness via simulated and real life datasets. As a DM application, the hybrid methods are also applied to an important field of finance for predicting interest rates offered by a Turkish bank to its customers. The results show that the proposed hybrid methods, being the most time efficient with competing performances, can be considered as powerful choices particularly for large datasets. In statistical research, regression models based on data play a central role; one of these models is the linear regression model. However, this model may give misleading results when data contain outliers. The outliers in linear regression can be resolved in two stages: by using the Mean Shift Outlier Model (MSOM) and by providing a new solution for this model. First, we construct a Tikhonov regularization problem for the MSOM. Then, we treat this problem using convex optimization techniques, specifically conic quadratic programming, permitting the use of interior point methods. This paper contributes to classification and identification in modern finance through advanced optimization. In the last few decades, financial misalignments and, thereby, financial crises have been increasing in numbers due to the rearrangement of the financial world. In this study, as one of the most remarkable of these, countries' debt crises, which result from illiquidity, are tried to predict with some macroeconomic variables. The methodology consists of a combination of two predictive regression models, logistic regression and robust conic multivariate adaptive regression splines (RCMARS), as linear and nonlinear parts of a generalized partial linear model. RCMARS has an advantage of coping with the noise in both input and output data and of obtaining more consistent optimization results than CMARS. An advanced version of conic generalized partial linear model which includes robustification of the data set is introduced: robust conic generalized partial linear model (RCGPLM). Regression analysis is a widely used statistical method for modelling relationships between variables. Multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) especially is very useful for high-dimensional problems and fitting nonlinear multivariate functions. A special advantage of MARS lies in its ability to estimate contributions of some basis functions so that both additive and interactive effects of the predictors are allowed to determine the response variable. The MARS method consists of two parts: forward and backward algorithms. Through these algorithms, it seeks to achieve two objectives: a good fit to the data, but a simple model. In this article, we use a penalized residual sum of squares for MARS as a Tikhonov regularization problem, and treat this with continuous optimization technique, in particular, the framework of conic quadratic programming. We call this new approach to MARS as CMARS, and consider it as becoming an important complementary and model-based alternative to the backward stepwise algorithm. Abstract: An algorithm of the inductive model generation and model selection is proposed to solve the problem of automatic construction of regression models. A regression model is an admissible superposition of smooth functions given by experts. Coherent Bayesian inference is used to estimate model parameters. In this paper, a novel approach to estimate fractional snow cover (FSC) from MODIS data in a complex and heterogeneous Alpine terrain is represented by using a state-of-the-art nonparametric spline regression method, namely, multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS). For this purpose, twenty MODIS - Landsat 8 image pairs acquired between April 2013 and December 2016 over European Alps are used. Fifteen of the image pairs are employed during model training and five images are reserved as an independent test dataset. MARS models are trained by using MODIS top-of-atmosphere reflectance values of bands 1–7, normalized difference snow index, normalized difference vegetation index and land cover class as predictor variables. Reference FSC maps are generated from higher spatial resolution Landsat 8 binary snow cover maps. Multilayer feedforward artificial neural network (ANN) models are also trained by using the same input data. During the training and the testing, the effects of the training data size and the sampling type on the predictive performance of ANN and MARS models are investigated. An additional search is also conducted to reveal whether the choice of the transfer function used in the output layer of ANN has a significant contribution to the network's FSC mapping performance. The final ANN and MARS FSC products are at 500 m spatial resolution. The results on the independent test scenes indicate that the developed ANN models with linear and hyperbolic tangent transfer functions in the output layer and the MARS models are in good agreement with reference FSC data with the same average values of R = 0.93. In contrast, the standard MODIS snow fraction product, namely, MOD10 FSC, exhibits slightly poorer performance with average R = 0.88. Abstract: To construct an adequate regression model one has to fulfill the set of measured features with their generated derivatives. Often the number of these features exceeds the number of the samples in the data set. After a feature generation process the problem of feature selection from a set of highly correlated features arises. The proposed algorithm uses an evidence maximization procedure to select a model as a subset of generated features. During the selection process it rejects multicollinear features. A problem of European option volatility modeling illustrates the algorithm. Its performance is compared with the performances of similar well-known algorithms. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
