Cet article tente de caracteriser l'experience de conversion de l'elite indienne au milieu du XIX e siecle. Les decennies 1830-1840 marquent les debuts de conversions de groupe organisees par les missionnaires protestants. Ce processus de conversion met en jeu une attirance entre l'hindouisme et le christianisme, entre une culture indigene et europeenne. Le nombre de conversions a ete tres reduit.
