A high-precision time framework is critical for improving our understanding of three major events: the Late Ordovician mass extinction, the Hirnantian glaciation, and the Hirnantian isotopic carbon excursion (HICE). In the present study, we conducted detailed cyclostratigraphic analysis of a high-resolution (1–2-cm intervals) anhysteretic remanent magnetization series obtained from the Wanhe section in South China, covering the lower Katian through Hirnantian. Power spectra and derived average spectral misfit results show that the section records the ensemble of Milankovitch cycles with 405-kyr (long-eccentricity), 93–125-kyr (short-eccentricity), 33.8-kyr (main obliquity), and 17–22-kyr (precession) periods. The obliquity period of 33.8 ± 0.46 kyr indicates a precession constant k of 57.19 ± 0.53 arcsec/yr, a length of day of 22.37 ± 0.12 h, and an Earth–Moon distance of 375,330 ± 722 km (vs. 384,000 km today) during the Late Ordovician (445 Ma). The ratios of obliquity band power to total power reveal periodicities of 1.32 Myr for the s 4 – s 3 term and 173.4 kyr for the s 3 – s 6 term. Aided by the highly fluctuating magnetic susceptibility (MS), we recognized a series of 1.32-Myr obliquity-forced glacio-eustatic cycles with three intervals of sea-level rise and climate warming trend characterized by high MS values and two episodes of sea-level fall and climate cooling trend before the Hirnantian. The 405-kyr and subsequent 33.8-kyr calibrations produce an ~7.36-Myr floating astronomical time scale (FATS) for the studied succession, indicating that the estimated durations for the Hirnantian Stage, the worldwide Hirnantian glaciation, and the first and second phases of the Late Ordovician mass extinction were ~1225 kyr, ~830 kyr, ~440 kyr, and ~540 kyr, respectively. The drift history of the Lhasa terrane plays an essential role in understanding the tectonic evolution of the Bangong-Nujiang Tethyan Ocean and the Neo-Tethyan Ocean, as well as the evolutionary history of the Tibetan Plateau. Here, a combined rock magnetic, petrographic, and palaeomagnetic study is performed on the Upper Permian–Lower Triassic limestones (∼259–251 Ma) in the western Lhasa terrane. The site-mean direction for the 28 sites is D g = 32.1°, I g = 50.3°, k g = 47.9 and α 95 = 4.0° in situ and D s = 342.9°, I s = 32.7°, k s = 43.2 and α 95 = 4.2° after tilt-correction, yielding a palaeopole at 68.9°N, 314.4°E with A 95 = 4.3°, corresponding to a palaeolatitude of 18.0° ± 4.3°N. The fold tests are not significant because the sampling section shows monoclinic features with minor variations in their bedding attitudes. The palaeopoles for the directions before and after tilt-correction are compared with reliable Late Permian–Palaeogene palaeopoles obtained from the Lhasa terrane. Based on these comparisons, the studied limestones were remagnetized prior to tilting and this remagnetization most likely occurred during the Early Cretaceous. The depositional environment of the limestones may have changed from anoxic to suboxic and oxic during the Early Cretaceous, leading to the oxidation of iron sulphide to authigenic magnetite. Meanwhile, the Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous convergence between the western Lhasa and Qiangtang terranes may have resulted in tectonic fluid migration and the formation of calcite veins and stylolites in the limestones. This is supported by the presence of small calcite veins and stylolites in some samples, as well as the fact that the framboidal oxides were formerly sulphides (mostly pyrite), implying that the majority of the iron oxides observed in the limestones were authigenic. These processes indicate that chemical remanent magnetization caused by the growth of magnetic minerals related to tectonic fluid migration was most likely the mechanism for the limestone remagnetization. The paleogeography of the Tethyan Himalaya (TH) during the Mesozoic is vital to constrain the evolutionary history of the Neo‐Tethys Ocean, but reliable paleomagnetic data from Jurassic rocks in this area are scarce. Here, we report the first high‐quality paleomagnetic results from the Middle Jurassic (∼175–173 Ma) Lanongla Formation limestones in the Nyalam area of the TH. For most specimens, stepwise thermal or hybrid demagnetization reveals two well‐defined magnetization components. A low‐temperature component, which is isolated between natural remanent magnetization and 200–300°C, is consistent with the present geomagnetic field direction. A high‐temperature component, which is isolated between 300–350°C/10–25 mT and 500–580°C/60–120 mT, passes fold tests at the 95% and 99% confidence level, indicating a prefolding primary magnetization. The tilt‐corrected site‐mean direction for 28 paleomagnetic sites is Ds = 331.0° and Is = −49.9° with α95 = 2.7°, which provides a Fisherian site‐mean paleopole at 23.7°N, 292.9°E with A95 = 2.8° and a paleolatitude of 31.7 ± 2.8°S for the Nyalam study area (28.6°N, 86.1°E). A comparison between the reliable Middle Jurassic‐Early Cretaceous poles obtained from the TH and those observed from the Lhasa terrane reveals that the Neo‐Tethys Ocean for the reference point (29.1°N, 86.1°E) had a latitudinal width of 3,500 ± 1,000 km at ∼174 Ma, reached its greatest width of 7,000 ± 1,000 km at ∼137 Ma, and had an average latitudinal spreading rate of ∼10.4 cm/year during ∼174–137 Ma. Plain Language Summary: The Neo‐Tethys Ocean here refers to the prehistoric ocean that existed between the Lhasa terrane to the north and the Indian plate to the south during the much of the Mesozoic and early Cenozoic. Knowledge of the development of the Neo‐Tethys Ocean is crucial to understanding the evolution of the Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau. However, the opening of the Neo‐Tethys Ocean remains controversial. The drift history of the Lhasa terrane is crucial for understanding the tectonic evolution of Tethyan Oceans and Jurassic true polar wander. However, high‐quality Middle Jurassic paleomagnetic data from the Lhasa terrane are limited in number. Here we report a combined paleomagnetic and geochronologic study on the Yeba Formation volcanic rocks, dated at ∼170 Ma, from the Lhasa terrane. Robust field and reversal tests indicate that the characteristic remanent magnetizations are primary. Our results provide a reliable Middle Jurassic (∼170 Ma) paleopole at 29.8°N, 180.7°E with A95 = 5.7° and a paleolatitude of 14.4 ± 5.7°N for the Lhasa area. Compared with previous paleomagnetic and geologic evidence, we propose that the Meso‐Tethys Ocean probably began to close in the eastern part at ∼168 Ma and that the Lhasa terrane underwent a ∼2,900 km southward "monster shift" during the Late Jurassic. Plain Language Summary: The formation of the Tibetan Plateau followed the breakup of the Gondwana supercontinent and was associated with the demise of several Tethyan Oceans. The Lhasa terrane, which is a long and narrow continental fragment derived from Gondwana, was isolated in the Tethyan Ocean during the Jurassic and finally accreted to the south margin of the Paleo‐Asia continent, leading to the closure of the Meso‐Tethys Ocean. However, when this Meso‐Tethys Ocean closed is still controversial. Our new robust paleomagnetic result shows that the Lhasa terrane was located at ∼14.4°N at ∼170 Ma. Based on available reliable Jurassic paleomagnetic data from the eastern part of the Lhasa and Qiangtang terranes, we suggest that the Meso‐Tethys Ocean began to close in the eastern part at ∼168 Ma. Integrating our critical Middle Jurassic paleomagnetic data with that of the Late Jurassic from the Lhasa terrane, we argue that the Lhasa terrane suffered a ∼2,900 km southward latitudinal shift during the Late Jurassic, which is known as true polar wander. Recent studies highlight the debates about the role of the northwestern China blocks, for example, north Tarim block, south Tarim block (STB), Altyn Tagh block (ATB) and Qaidam‐Qilian block (QQB) during the assembly of Rodinia. We herein present a combined paleomagnetic, geochronological, and geochemical study on 16 mafic dikes in the northern ATB. After removing a recent viscous remanent magnetization, three characteristic remanent magnetization components (CHs) were isolated. CH1 was identified in eight NW‐trending diabase dikes, one of which was newly dated at 895.3 ± 7.7 Ma through use of SHRIMP baddeleyite U‐Pb methodology. It yields a mean direction (D/I) of 123.3°/−42.2° (α95 = 12.1°). The paleopole (40.9°S/184.6°E, A95 = 11.7°) was calculated by averaging eight virtual geomagnetic poles (VGPs) from each dike. A partial baked‐contact test supports the primary origin of CH1. CH2 was isolated from three E‐W trending diabase dikes, pointing northwest with considerably shallower downward inclinations. CH3 was obtained from five lamprophyre dikes, directing southeast with moderate to shallow upward inclinations. However, the VGPs of either CH2 or CH3 are insufficient to average a precise mean pole. Geochemical analyses also reveal petrogenetic discrepancy among the dikes with distinct CHs. Combining the new ∼895 Ma pole of CH1 with the global paleomagnetic database and being aided by geological evidence, we propose that the STB‐ATB‐QQB and the north China craton were located along the northwestern side of Laurentia in Rodinia at ∼895 Ma, and suggest the connection might have been intact until ∼780 Ma. The Late Paleozoic Ice Age (LPIA) was the longest-lasting icehouse in the Phanerozoic. Previous studies indicated a climate warming interval in the earliest Permian—an apex of the LPIA. To better understand hydroclimatic changes and carbon cycling within this time interval, we conducted a series of high-resolution geochemical and rock magnetic analyses, including magnetic measurements (e.g., magnetic susceptibility, anhysteretic remanent magnetization, hysteresis loops, temperature-dependent susceptibility), ratio of iron to potassium (Fe/K), and carbonate carbon isotope (δ13C carb) from a deep-marine section in South China. Calibrated to the published astronomical time scale, a negative δ13C carb excursion (−1‰) was identified during 298.4–297.9 Ma, and it was time-equivalent with the warming interval, recognized by a decrease in conodont apatite oxygen isotopes in South China, low-latitude sea-level transgression, and high-latitude deglaciation. The negative δ13C carb excursion also coincided with a magmatic pulse of the Skagerrak-Centered Large Igneous Province (LIP), indicating that the perturbation in carbon cycling is likely associated with the release of volcanic CO 2. Furthermore, cyclostratigraphic analysis on multiple paleoclimatic proxies, including ferrimagnetic susceptibility, gamma-ray, and Fe/K, suggested that the negative excursion of δ13C carb also overlapped with the maximum of the eccentricity cycle. To better constrain the Early Cretaceous paleogeographic position of the Tethyan Himalaya and the India–Asia collision process, a paleomagnetic study was performed on the Lakang Formation lava flows in the Cuona area in the southeastern Tethyan Himalaya. Stepwise thermal and alternating field demagnetizations successfully isolated reliable characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM) directions that include antipodal dual polarities and pass positive fold tests at the 99% confidence level and reversal tests at 95% confidence level, indicating prefolding primary magnetizations. The distribution patterns of ChRM directions from the Lakang Formation lava flows are consistent with young lava flows at similar latitudes, suggesting that secular variation has likely been averaged out. The tilt-corrected site-mean direction for 31 sites is D = 261.6 ° , I = − 68.5 ° with α 95 = 3.6 ° , which provides a paleopole at 26.8°S, 315.2°E ( A 95 = 5.7 ° ), corresponding to a paleolatitude of 52.2 ° ± 5.7 ° S for the study area. Comparison of the paleolatitude observed from the Lakang Formation lava flows with that expected from the apparent polar wander paths of India at 130 Ma show a paleolatitude difference of ∼2.1° (∼230 km), indicating that neither a great north-south continental crustal shortening occurred between the Indian craton and the Tethyan Himalaya after 130 Ma, nor that a wide ocean separated them at that time. Comparison with reliable Cretaceous–Paleocene paleomagnetic results observed from the Tethyan Himalaya and the Lhasa terrane indicates that the latitudinal width of the Neo-Tethyan Ocean could have been up to ∼7000 km at 134–130 Ma and an extension should have existed between the Indian craton and the Tethyan Himalaya during the Late Cretaceous and Paleocene. Furthermore, reliable paleomagnetic results suggest that the India–Asia collision was a dual-collision process, consisting of a first collision of the Tethyan Himalaya with the Lhasa terrane (Asia) at 54.9 ± 2.3 Ma and a final continent–continent collision of the Indian craton with the Tethyan Himalaya at 40.0 ± 3.3 Ma . Paleomagnetic records of the Gauss-Matuyama reversal were obtained from two loess sections at Baoji on the Chinese Loess Plateau. Stepwise thermal demagnetization shows two obvious magnetization components. A low-temperature component isolated between 100 and 200-250°C is close to the present geomagnetic field direction, and a high-temperature component isolated above 200-250°C reveals clearly normal, reversed, and transitional polarities. Magnetostratigraphic results of both sections indicated that the Gauss-Matuyama reversal consists of a high-frequency polarity fluctuation zone, but the characteristic remanent magnetization directions during the reversal are clearly inconsistent. Rock magnetic experiments demonstrated that for all the specimens with normal, reversed, and transitional polarities magnetite and hematite are the main magnetic carriers. Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility indicates that the studied loess sediments have a primary sedimentary fabric. Based on virtual geomagnetic pole latitudes, the Gauss-Matuyama reversal records in the two sections are accompanied by 14 short-lived geomagnetic episodes (15 rapid polarity swings) and 12 short-lived geomagnetic episodes (13 rapid polarity swings), respectively. Our new records, together with previous ones from lacustrine, marine, and aeolian deposits, suggest that high-frequency polarity swings coexist with the Gauss-Matuyama reversal, and that the Gauss-Matuyama reversal may have taken more than 11 kyr to complete. However, we need more detailed analyses of sections across polarity swings during reversals as well as more high-resolution reversal records to understand geomagnetic behavior and inconsistent characteristic remanent magnetization directions during polarity reversals. To constrain the Lhasa-Qiangtang collisional age, a combined paleomagnetic and geochronologic investigation has been performed on the Risong Formation redbeds and volcanic rocks in the Wuma area of the western Lhasa terrane (LT). A U-Pb dating result from the volcanic interlayer at the bottom of the Risong Formation redbeds yields the youngest weighted mean 206Pb/238U age of 110.6 ± 1.3 Ma, and the two detrital zircon U-Pb chronological results from the Risong Formation redbeds provide the youngest weighted mean 206Pb/238U age of 106.9 ± 3.3 Ma (the top strata of section A) and 120.5 ± 3.0 Ma (the top strata of section D), respectively. Our new geochronological results suggest that the studied Risong Formation redbeds formed during the Early Cretaceous, rather than during the Late Jurassic as assigned by 1:250,000 scale Wuma regional geological survey report. Characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM) directions from two different limbs of folds concentrate in two different groups, and both site-mean directions pass positive fold tests. One group including 32 sites yields a tilt-corrected site-mean direction that is D = 356.1°, I = 33.1° with α 95 = 2.3°, corresponding to a paleopole at 75.2°N, 278.1°E with dp/dm = 1.5°/2.6° and a paleolatitude of 18.1° ± 1.5°N for the study area (32.41°N, 83.39°E). The other group including 24 sites provides a tilt-corrected site-mean direction that is D = 60.5°, I = 48.5° with α 9 5 = 2.0°, corresponding to a paleopole at 38.7°N, 159.6°E with dp/dm = 1.7°/2.6° and a paleolatitude of 29.5° ± 1.7°N for the study area (32.41°N, 83.39°E). After syntectonic-sedimentation-correction, the Fisherian site-mean inclination of 41.7° ± 1.6° and corresponding paleolatitude of 24.0° ± 1.2°N obtained from 56 sites of two different limbs are consistent with the inclination-only mean of 39.6 ± 3.1° and corresponding paleolatitude of 22.5° ± 2.2°N deduced from the ChRM directions of all the 56 paleomagnetic sites, suggesting that the observed inclination discrepancy of the Risong Formation redbeds may result from the syntectonic sedimentation. Comparing the Early Cretaceous paleolatitudes observed from the western LT with those from the western Qiangtang terrane shows insignificant paleolatitude difference, supporting that the Lhasa-Qiangtang collision in the western part occurred at or before the Early Cretaceous. • New dating shows the sampled Risong Formation redbeds formed during the Early Cretaceous rather than the Late Jurassic. • The Wuma sampling area was located at ~22.5° ± 2.2°N during ~120.5–106.9 Ma. • The Lhasa-Qiangtang collision occurred before ~120 Ma in the western part. • The Tuva–Mongol and Amuria blocks were at low latitudes during 330-315 Ma. • The Boreal Realm likely extended into equatorial regions at 330 Ma. • The Boreal Realm developed in a wide northern temperate zone during 330-315 Ma. Fossil organisms of the Boreal Realm in the Tuva–Mongol Block (TMB) and Amuria Block (AMB) are commonly thought to have lived at mid to high latitudes during the Carboniferous Period; however, reliable paleomagnetic constraints have not been available previously to test this hypothesis. Here we report newly obtained combined paleomagnetic and geochronological results from the Upper Mississippian Gunbayan Formation in the AMB and the Lower Pennsylvanian Altan-Ovoo Formation in the TMB. Zircon U–Pb dating of tuff beds from the Gunbayan and Altan-Ovoo formations yield ages of 331.0 ± 2.7 and 315.5 ± 2.4 Ma, respectively. A total of 263 paleomagnetic specimens underwent stepwise thermal demagnetization. After removing the viscous remanent magnetizations of the recent geomagnetic field, stable high-temperature components (HTCs), carried by magnetite, were successfully acquired from 240 specimens. The HTCs of the Gunbayan Formation passed a fold test and a reversal test, and those of the Altan-Ovoo Formation passed a fold test, suggesting that they represent primary remanence magnetizations. We used the elongation/inclination method to test and correct for all the HTC directions of the clastic rocks of the studied formations. Their corresponding paleomagnetic poles are 46.0°N/320.0°E (A = 95 2.0 °) at ca. 330 Ma for the AMB and 43.5°N/355.9°E (A = 95 2.9 °) at ca. 315 Ma for the TMB. The updated paleomagnetic database indicates with certainty that both the TMB and the AMB were located in northern hemisphere low-latitude regions and close to the equator at ca. 330 Ma, suggesting that the Boreal Realm might have extended into the equatorial region at the onset of the large ice age of the Carboniferous. The paleobiogeographic characteristics and distribution of climate-sensitive lithologies indicate that this realm occupied a wide northern temperate belt during 330–315 Ma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• U-Pb ages of ~801.9 Ma and ~804.6 Ma were got from the Madiyi Formation, South China. • A ~800 Ma paleopole was reported from the Madiyi Formation. • South China was at a high latitudinal position at ~800 Ma. • South China was unlikely to be in the central position of Rodinia at ~800 Ma. New geochronological and palaeomagnetic data are presented for the Madiyi Formation of the lower Banxi Group in the South China Block (SCB). Zircon U–Pb dating of two tuff beds within the sampled section yielded consistent ages of 801.9 ± 6.3 Ma and 804.6 ± 9.6 Ma. A total of 137 palaeomagnetic samples were collected and thermally stepwise demagnetized. Three components were isolated. Component A was identified in 30 samples below 300 °C. It has a mean direction resembling the recent geomagnetic field, and is interpreted of recent viscous remanent magnetization. Component B, typically isolated below ~660 °C, yields a pole in situ close to the Cretaceous poles of the SCB and is interpreted as a Cretaceous overprint. Component C was identified in 90 samples, determined in the high-temperature steps between 660 and 690 °C. It yielded a mean direction of Ds = 293.1°, Is = 69.9° (k = 22.3, α 95 = 3.2°) after tilt correction, corresponding to a palaeopole of 35.3°N, 67.9°E (dp = 5.5°, dm = 4.7°) and palaeolatitude of 53.8 +4.9/−4.7°N for the study area. Inclination correction using an empirical flattening factor f = 0.6 yielded a corrected mean direction of Ds* = 293.0°, Is* = 77.3° (k = 51.4, α 95 = 2.1°), corresponding to a palaeopole of 34.3°N, 82.4°E (dp = 3.9°, dm = 3.7°) and palaeolatitude of 65.7 +3.7/−3.6°. Component C records five polarity zones and passes a reversal test. The pole diverges from all younger poles of the SCB, and is interpreted to be of primary remanent magnetization. Our results reveal a high-latitude position of the SCB at ~800 Ma. Comparing with other two poles from the Xiaofeng dykes (~821 Ma) and Yanbian dykes (~824 Ma) reveals no significant latitudinal difference for the SCB between ~820 and 800 Ma. However, coeval poles from the global palaeomagnetic database, along with geological evidence, indicate that East Svalbard, Australia and Laurentia were located around the equator at ~800 Ma. The striking difference in palaeolatitude suggests that the SCB was unlikely to be located between southeastern Australia and western Laurentia in the Rodinia supercontinent at ~800 Ma. To better constrain the evolution of the Mongol‐Okhotsk suture, we carried out new paleomagnetic studies on Sharilyn Formation (~155 Ma) and Tsagantsav Formation (~130 Ma) in southern Mongolia, Amuria Block (AMU), and Tuchengzi Formation (~140 Ma) and Dadianzi/Yixian Formation (~130 Ma) in the Yanshan belt, North China Block (NCB). A total of 719 collected samples (from 100 sites) were subjected to stepwise thermal demagnetization. After a low‐temperature component of viscous magnetic remanence acquired in the recent field was removed, the stable high‐temperature components were isolated from most samples. The high‐temperature components from each rock unit passed a fold test and a reversal test, indicating their primary origins. The corresponding paleomagnetic poles were thus calculated. For AMU, the ~155 Ma pole is at 74.7°N/232.5°E (A95 = 3.7°), the ~130 Ma pole at 74.6°N/194.7°E (A95 = 2.9°); for the NCB, the ~140 Ma pole is at 82.7°N/208.6°E (A95 = 4.3°), the ~130 Ma pole at 80.5°N/197.4°E (A95 = 2.3°). By combining our new results with the published data, we refined the 155–100 Ma segment of the apparent polar wander paths for AMU and NCB, which can demonstrate that these two blocks have been tectonically coherent (AMU‐NCB) during 155–100 Ma. Comparison of the apparent polar wander paths, however, revealed a latitudinal plate convergence of 14.3° ± 6.9° and ~19.0° relative rotation between Siberia and the AMU‐NCB after ~155 Ma. Large‐scale latitudinal convergence likely ceased by ~130 Ma, although some relative rotation between them continued along the Mongol‐Okhotsk suture until ~100 Ma.
