Soil moisture plays an important role in crop yield estimation, irrigation management, etc. Remote sensing technology has potential for large-scale and high spatial soil moisture mapping. However, offline remote sensing data processing is time-consuming and resource-intensive, and significantly hampers the efficiency and timeliness of soil moisture mapping. Due to the high-speed computing capabilities of remote sensing cloud platforms, a High Spatial Resolution Soil Moisture Estimation Framework (HSRSMEF) based on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform was developed in this study. The functions of the HSRSMEF include research area and input datasets customization, radar speckle noise filtering, optical-radar image spatio-temporal matching, soil moisture retrieving, soil moisture visualization and exporting. This paper tested the performance of HSRSMEF by combining Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2 images and in-situ soil moisture data in the central farmland area of Jilin Province, China. Reconstructed Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) based on the Savitzky-Golay algorithm conforms to the crop growth cycle, and its correlation with the original NDVI is about 0.99 (P < 0.001). The soil moisture accuracy of the random forest model (R2 = 0.942, RMSE = 0.013 m3/m3) is better than that of the water cloud model (R2 = 0.334, RMSE = 0.091 m3/m3). Models for bathymetry retrieval from multispectral images have not considered the errors caused by tidal fluctuation. A rigorous bathymetric model that considers the variation in tide height time series, including the tide height calculation and instantaneous tide height correction at the epoch of satellite flight into the bathymetric retrieval model, is proposed in this paper. The model was applied on Weizhou Island, located in Guangxi Province, China, and its accuracy verificated with four check lines and seven checkpoints. A scene from the Landsat 8 satellite image was used as experimental data. The reference ("true") water depth data collected by a RESON SeaBat 7125 multibeam instrument was used for comparison analysis. When satellite-derived bathymetry is compared, it is found that maximum absolute error, mean absolute error, and RMSE have decreased 54, 45, and 30% relative to that of the traditional model in the entire test field. The accuracy of the water depths retrieved by our model increased 30 and 56% when validated using four check lines and seven checkpoints, respectively. Black and odorous water seriously affects the ecological balance of rivers and the health of people living nearby. Satellite remote sensing technology with its advantages of a large range, long-time series, low cost, and high efficiency, has provided a new area for water quality detection. Much archived remote sensing satellite data can be further processed and used as a data source for black and odorous water detection. In this paper, Gaofen-2 remote sensing data with a spatial resolution of 1 m is leveraged as the data source. To enrich the data source in the northern coastal zone of China, we have built a high-quality remote sensing dataset, called the remote sensing images for black and odorous water detection (RSBD) dataset, which is collected from the Gaofen-2 satellite in Yantai, China. In addition, we propose a network with an encoder-decoder discriminant structure for black and odorous water detection. In the network, an augmented attention module is designed to capture a more comprehensive semantic feature representation. Further, the median balancing loss function is adopted to solve the imbalance issues. • The ISP method allows for gathering a large number of historical training samples. • The SRVI values of the same crop planted in neighboring years range from 0.91 and 1.2. • A distinct northward expansion trend is evident for all four major crops, in Heilongjiang Province, China. Mapping agricultural information such as cropping area and type is of great significance for land use and food security and a common method to retrieve such information is satellite imagery classification. The current image classification techniques require a statistically large number of training samples to obtain representative spectral signatures, ideally collected during the satellite overpass time/date. Although this prerequisite sounds simple and easy in principle, it is extremely challenging and sometimes impossible when classifying historical satellite images, as one simply cannot go back in time to collect training datasets or ground truthing. In this paper, we introduce an iterative and subsequent proximation (ISP) method to circumvent this problem for historical image classifications for historical crop mapping. This method assumes that the same crops grown two years apart have similar spectral properties within the same growing season, with limited variation. This allows the use of the crop information classified in any given year (n) to be used as training samples for the next year (n + 1) or the previous year (n-1). Iteratively repeating n-1, n-2... process leads to the mapping of historical cropping information without a priori ground truthing data. To demonstrate the ISP feasibility, we first used the historical Landsat time-series data to map four major stable crops (rice, maize, soybean, and wheat) in Hailun County, Heilongjiang Province, China, and then further expanded the ISP application to the entire Heilongjiang Province to map cropping areas from 1982 to 2020, using the classification and regression trees (CART) algorithm. The results were validated for those years when actual cropping measurement data were available and further verified with statistical data for other years. The results indicated that the proposed ISP method was appropriate for the historical mapping of four major crops, with a mapping accuracy of approximately 80 % when validated with field data, and correlation coefficients of 0.86, 0.85, 0.91, and 0.94, respectively when compared with historical statistical cropping data. The crop mapping results showed distinct trends of northward expansion in each of the four crops in Heilongjiang Province, which agreed well with previous studies. Accurate understanding of daily evapotranspiration (ET) at field scale is of great significance for agricultural water resources management. The operational simplified surface energy balance (SSEBop) model has been applied to estimate field scale ET with Landsat satellite imagery. However, there is still uncertainty in the ET time reconstruction for cloudy days based on limited clear days' Landsat ET fraction (ETf) computed by SSEBop. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) remote sensing data can provide daily surface observation over clear-sky areas. This paper presented an enhanced gap-filling scheme for the SSEBop ET model, which improved the temporal resolution of Landsat ETf through the spatio-temporal fusion with SSEBop MODIS ETf on clear days and increased the time reconstruction accuracy of field-scale ET. The results were validated with the eddy covariance (EC) measurements over cropland in northwestern China. It indicated that the improved scheme performed better than the original SSEBop Landsat approach in daily ET estimation, with higher Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE, 0.75 vs. 0.70), lower root mean square error (RMSE, 0.95 mm·d-1 vs. 1.05 mm·d-1), and percent bias (PBias, 16.5% vs. 25.0%). This fusion method reduced the proportion of deviation (13.3% vs. 25.5%) in the total errors and made the random error the main proportion, which can be reduced over time and space in regional ET estimation. It also evidently improved the underestimation of crop ET by the SSEBop Landsat scheme during irrigation before sowing and could more accurately describe the synergistic changes of soil moisture and cropland ET. The mining industry production is an important pillar industry in China, while its extensive production activities have led to several ecological and environmental problems. Earth observation technology using high-resolution satellite imagery can help us efficiently obtain information on surface elements, surveying and monitoring various land occupation issues arising from open-pit mining production activities. Conventional pixel-based interpretation methods for high-resolution remote sensing images are restricted by "salt and pepper" noise caused by environmental factors, making it difficult to meet increasing requirements for monitoring accuracy. With the Jingxiang phosphorus mining area in Jingmen Hubei Province as the studied area, this paper uses a multi-scale segmentation algorithm to extract large-scale main characteristic information using a layered mask method based on the hierarchical structure of the image object. The remaining characteristic elements were classified and extracted in combination with the random forest model and characteristic factors to obtain land occupation information related mining industry production, which was compared with the results of the Classification and Regression Tree model. 23 characteristic factors in three aspects were selected, including spectral, geometric and texture characteristics. The methods employed in this study achieved 86% and 0.78 respectively in overall extraction accuracy analysis and the Kappa coefficient analysis, compared to 79% and 0.68 using the conventional method. Satellite image classification is the core of satellite image interpretation. The traditional shallow learning classification algorithm is difficult to extract remote sensing image features effectively, resulting in low classification accuracy. The deep neural network can automatically realize the feature analysis. However, due to the similarity of the optical properties of the cloud and snow, the existing deep learning model is difficult to obtain satisfactory results for the cloud and snow classification in the plateau. Meanwhile, too many parameters of deep learning lead to slow detection speed, which is difficult to meet the real-time requirements of detection. Furthermore, the deep learning method is prone to model degradation. In view of the existing problems, this paper proposes a dilated multi-scale cascade forest method to realize the classification of satellite cloud images. Multi-scale scanning increases the diversity of feature vector extraction and improves the separability of features. The dilated structure is designed to expand the feature receptive field, it improves the efficiency of feature extraction without losing the texture and spatial correlation information of the original image. In addition, the number of layers of network cascading does not need to be customized, it can be determined automatically according to the performance of the system. The proposed method effectively improves the accuracy of cloud/snow classification. Experiments on the imagery of HuanJing satellites A and B (HJ-1A/1B) in China demonstrate that the proposed model can get better classification results than existing studies. Change detection in high resolution remote sensing images is crucial to the understanding of land surface changes. As traditional change detection methods are not suitable for the task considering the challenges brought by the fine image details and complex texture features conveyed in high resolution images, a number of deep learning-based change detection methods have been proposed to improve the change detection performance. Although the state-of-the-art deep feature based methods outperform all the other deep learning-based change detection methods, networks in the existing deep feature based methods are mostly modified from architectures that are originally proposed for single-image semantic segmentation. Transferring these networks for change detection task still poses some key issues. In this paper, we propose a deeply supervised image fusion network (IFN) for change detection in high resolution bi-temporal remote sensing images. Specifically, highly representative deep features of bi-temporal images are firstly extracted through a fully convolutional two-stream architecture. Then, the extracted deep features are fed into a deeply supervised difference discrimination network (DDN) for change detection. To improve boundary completeness and internal compactness of objects in the output change maps, multi-level deep features of raw images are fused with image difference features by means of attention modules for change map reconstruction. DDN is further enhanced by directly introducing change map losses to intermediate layers in the network, and the whole network is trained in an end-to-end manner. IFN is applied to a publicly available dataset, as well as a challenging dataset consisting of multi-source bi-temporal images from Google Earth covering different cities in China. Both visual interpretation and quantitative assessment confirm that IFN outperforms four benchmark methods derived from the literature, by returning changed areas with complete boundaries and high internal compactness compared to the state-of-the-art methods. The GaoFen6 (GF6) satellite is an optical remote sensing satellite in China's GaoFen series that combines the imaging abilities of high resolution and wide field of view (WFV). The WFV camera, equipped on the GF6, can obtain an image 800 km in width and with a resolution of 16 m, which represents the highest level of observation swath width among similar satellites in the world. Guaranteeing the high geometric quality of the imagery obtained by the WFV camera for subsequent remote sensing applications is a prominent problem that must be solved. This paper presents the key geometry processing method for the WFV camera, in which the parameters relative determination method based on two selected reference bands and the sensor correction based on virtual collinear complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) with distortion are proposed. To overcome the challenge of matching the tie points between different bands with large radiation differences, two bands—rather than traditional one band—were chosen as the reference bands for the WFV camera to perform the parameters relative determination. The geometric influence of the virtual CMOS is fully analyzed in the along- and across-track directions. Then, the virtual CMOS with a real calibrated distortion was designed; based on this design, a sensor correction was applied to stitch the whole image generated by single images in each band. This experiment verified the effectiveness of the proposed parameters relative determination and sensor correction methods in improving the internal relative accuracy and the registration accuracy; moreover, the mosaicking accuracy is also guaranteed. Tsunami is one of the world's most dangerous marine disaster. In this paper, freely available remote sensing data are applied to study the hazard, vulnerability, and evacuation in the event that a tsunami strikes the district of Tianya in the city of Sanya. Tsunami inundation is calculated using a tsunami numerical model, and the tsunami vulnerability and evacuation in the inundation area are analyzed. Aster Global Digital Elevation Model elevation data are applied to provide input data for the tsunami numerical model and thus obtain tsunami inundation areas, while they are also used to study the surface slope for evacuation. Landsat satellite imagery is used to analyze land–water borders and land cover in both hazard assessment and evacuation analysis. Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite nighttime lights data provide information of the socioeconomic activity for vulnerability analysis. The analysis results show that the remote sensing data is suitable for tsunami assessment and evacuation analysis of China's county-level region. We can get a general understanding about tsunami vulnerability and evacuation situation. One kind of remote sensing data can accomplish several tasks, avoiding the error caused by different source data. Remote sensing can play an important role in tsunami assessment. Extreme heat events have serious effects on human daily life. Accurately capturing the dynamic variance of extreme high-temperature distributions in a timely manner is the basis for analyzing the potential impacts of extreme heat, thereby informing risk prevention strategies. This paper demonstrates the potential application of multiple source remote sensing data in mapping and monitoring the extreme heat events that occurred on Aug. 8, 2013 in Jiangsu Province, China. In combination with MODIS products, the thermal sharpening (TsHARP) method and a binary linear model are compared to downscale the original daytime FengYun 2F (FY-2F) land surface temperature (LST) imagery, with a temporal resolution of 60 min, from 5 km to 1 km. Using the meteorological measurement data from Nanjing station as the reference, the research then estimates the instantaneous air temperature by using an iterative computation based on the Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (SEBAL), which is used to analyze the spatio-temporal air temperature variance. The results show that the root mean square error (RMSE) of the LST downscaled from the binary linear model is 1.30°C compared to the synchronous MODIS LST, and on this basis the estimated air temperature has the RMSE of 1.78°C. The spatial and temporal distribution of air temperature variance at each geographical location from 06:30 to 18:30 can be accurately determined, and indicates that the high temperature gradually increases and expands from the city center. For the spatial distribution, the air temperature and the defined scorching temperature proportion index increase from northern to middle, to southern part of Jiangsu, and are slightly lower in the eastern area near the Yellow Sea. In terms of temporal characteristics, the percentage of area with air temperature above 37°C in each city increase with time after 10:30 and reach the peak value at 14:30 or 15:30. Then, they decrease gradually, and the rising and falling trends become smaller from the southern cities to the northern regions. Moreover, there is a distinct positive relationship between the percentage of area above 37°C and the population density. The above results show that the spatio-temporal distributions of heat waves and their influencing factors can be determined by combining multiple sources of remotely sensed image data. Due to the country's rapid economic growth, the problem of air pollution in China is becoming increasingly serious. In order to achieve a win-win situation for the environment and urban development, the government has issued many policies to strengthen environmental protection. PM2.5 is the primary particulate matter in air pollution, so an accurate estimation of PM2.5 distribution is of great significance. Although previous studies have attempted to retrieve PM2.5 using geostatistical or aerosol remote sensing retrieval methods, the current rough resolution and accuracy remain as limitations of such methods. This paper proposes a fine-grained spatiotemporal PM2.5 retrieval method that comprehensively considers various datasets, such as Landsat 8 satellite images, ground monitoring station data, and socio-economic data, to explore the applicability of different machine learning algorithms in PM2.5 retrieval. Six typical algorithms were used to train the multi-dimensional elements in a series of experiments. The characteristics of retrieval accuracy in different scenarios were clarified mainly according to the validation index, R2. The random forest algorithm was shown to have the best numerical and PM2.5-based air-quality-category accuracy, with a cross-validated R2 of 0.86 and a category retrieval accuracy of 0.83, while both maintained excellent retrieval accuracy and achieved a high spatiotemporal resolution. Based on this retrieval model, we evaluated the PM2.5 distribution characteristics and hourly variation in the sample area, as well as the functions of different input variables in the model. The PM2.5 retrieval method proposed in this paper provides a new model for fine-grained PM2.5 concentration estimation to determine the distribution laws of air pollutants and thereby specify more effective measures to realize the high-quality development of the city. Validation is an essential and important step before the application of remote sensing products. This paper introduces a prototype of the validation network for remote sensing products in China (VRPC). The VRPC aims to improve remote sensing products at a regional scale in China. These improvements will enhance the applicability of the key remote sensing products in understanding and interpretation of typical land surface processes in China. The framework of the VRPC is introduced first, including its four basic components. Then, the basic selection principles of the observation sites are described, and the principles for the validation of the remote sensing products are established. The VRPC will be realized in stages. In the first stage, four stations that have improved remote sensing observation facilities have been incorporated according to the selection principles. Certain core observation sites have been constructed at these stations. Next the Heihe Station is introduced in detail as an example. The three levels of observation (the research base, pixel-scale validation sites, and regional coverage) adopted by the Heihe Station are carefully explained. The pixel-scale validation sites with nested multi-scale observation systems in this station are the most unique feature, and these sites aim to solve some key scientific problems associated with remote sensing product validation (e.g., the scale effect and scale transformation). Multi-year of in situ measurements will ensure the high accuracy and inter-annual validity of the land products, which will provide dynamic regional monitoring and simulation capabilities in China. This paper examines the topographic and geometric controls on glacier changes in area and equilibrium-line altitude (ELA) in the central Tien Shan, China, since the Little Ice Age (LIA). We delineate the extents of 487 modern glaciers and their corresponding maximum LIA glacial advances using satellite imagery in Google Earth, and analyze the relationships between the magnitude of glacier changes and a set of local topographic/geometric factors including glacier area, slope, aspect, shape, hypsometry and mean elevation. Our results show that: (1) glacier area decreased from 460.2km² during the LIA to 265.6km² in the 2000s (a loss of 42.3%), with an average ELA increase of ~100 m; (2) relative area changes of glaciers are strongly affected by two of these local factors (glacier area and mean elevation); and (3) ELA change does not show a strong relationship with local factors, suggesting that it may be controlled mainly by climatic factors. This study provides important insights into the local controls on glacier changes at the centennial timescale, which are of critical importance to assess future glacier changes in this arid and semi-arid region. The growing population and northward shifts in the center of grain production collectively contribute to the arising farmland use intensity of the farming–pastoral ecotone of Northern China (FPENC). Consequently, it poses a great threat to the vulnerable ecosystem of FPENC. Thus, farmland use intensity monitoring is a top priority to practice sustainable farming. In this study, we establish an indicator system designed to evaluate farmland use intensity in Ulanqab, located in the central part of FPENC. This system includes three single-year indicators (the degree of coupling between effective rainfall and crop water requirement (Dcrr), irrigation intensity (Iri) and crop duration (Cd)) and two multi-year indicators (the frequency of adopting the green-depressing cropping system (Gf) and rotation frequency (Rf)). We mapped five farmland use intensity indicators in Ulanqab from 2010 to 2019 using satellite imagery and other ancillary data. Then, the farmland use patterns were recognized by applying the self-organizing map algorithm. Our results suggest that the mapping results of crop types, center pivot irrigation (CPI), and irrigated areas are reasonably accurate. Iri, Cd, and Rf experienced an increase of 31 m3/hm2, 1 day, and 0.06 in Ulanqab from 2010 to 2019, respectively, while Dcrr and Gf witnessed a decrease of 0.002 and 0.004, respectively. That is, farmers are progressively inclined to higher farmland use intensity. Moreover, spatial heterogeneity analysis shows that Northern Ulanqab owned higher Dcrr, Iri, Cd, and Rf, and lower Gf than the southern part. Agricultural greenhouses (AGs) are an important component of modern facility agriculture, and accurately mapping and dynamically monitoring their distribution are necessary for agricultural scientific management and planning. Semantic segmentation can be adopted for AG extraction from remote sensing images. However, the feature maps obtained by traditional deep convolutional neural network (DCNN)-based segmentation algorithms blur spatial details and insufficient attention is usually paid to contextual representation. Meanwhile, the maintenance of the original morphological characteristics, especially the boundaries, is still a challenge for precise identification of AGs. To alleviate these problems, this paper proposes a novel network called high-resolution boundary refined network (HBRNet). In this method, we design a new backbone with multiple paths based on HRNetV2 aiming to preserve high spatial resolution and improve feature extraction capability, in which the Pyramid Cross Channel Attention (PCCA) module is embedded to residual blocks to strengthen the interaction of multiscale information. Moreover, the Spatial Enhancement (SE) module is employed to integrate the contextual information of different scales. In addition, we introduce the Spatial Gradient Variation (SGV) unit in the Boundary Refined (BR) module to couple the segmentation task and boundary learning task, so that they can share latent high-level semantics and interact with each other, and combine this with the joint loss to refine the boundary. In our study, GaoFen-2 remote sensing images in Shouguang City, Shandong Province, China are selected to make the AG dataset. The experimental results show that HBRNet demonstrates a significant improvement in segmentation performance up to an IoU score of 94.89%, implying that this approach has advantages and potential for precise identification of AGs. This paper introduces Beijing-1 and its applications in researching the eco-environment after the Wenchuan Earthquake on 12 May 2008. The land use/cover types of a study area close to the epicentre of the earthquake, taken before and after the earthquake, were classified using Beijing-1 small satellite multispectral images. Based on the land use/cover change, several eco-environmental problems were studied, including biotope change, vegetation cover change, hydro-ecology change and land degradation. The eco-environmental status change was also evaluated. The conclusion is that the Wenchuan Earthquake affected the land use/cover and eco-environment of the research area acutely, and the eco-environmental status change was observable. Habitats have become fragmented. The vegetation has been greatly destroyed. The dammed lakes which were produced were threatening to cause floods in the downriver region. In this paper we present an improved watershed segmentation algorithm for settlement mapping from medium resolution satellite data over plain areas in China. The algorithm can increase the computational efficiency of the fastest reported watershed segmentation algorithm by 30-40%. We apply this method to a selected study area in southern Hebei Province, China. We acquired a Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM + ) image over this area in May 2000, two Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) images in August 2004 and April 2005, and two Beijing-1 satellite images in May 2006 and May 2007. The three types of images have three similar spectral bands (green, red and near-infrared) with similar spatial resolution (30-32 m). Only the red and near-infrared bands were used in image segmentation for settlement area extraction. The extracted settlement results are compared with manual interpretation results by two people. We assumed the human interpretation results are of higher accuracy than the segmentation results. Our results indicated that our settlement area extraction method is effective. Google Earth uses aerial and satellite images from various sources as its background. It is designed to enable every person who owns a computer to easily 'fly' to aerial views of any location on the planet. However, just as with ordinary aerial or satellite images, there inevitably exist shadows in Google Earth images, making some ground objects obscured, even unidentifiable. In this paper, we describe a model we have developed for image shadow removal that uses radiative transfer theory in combination with prior knowledge to compensate for the lost information over shadow areas. We arbitrarily selected six images with severe shadows from Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo, New York and San Francisco, respectively, for algorithm testing. Abstract: The eco-environment in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGRA) in China has received much attention due to the construction of the Three Gorges Hydropower Station. Land use/land cover changes (LUCC) are a major cause of ecological environmental changes. In this paper, the spatial landscape dynamics from 1978 to 2005 in this area are monitored and recent changes are analyzed, using the Landsat TM (MSS) images of 1978, 1988, 1995, 2000 and 2005. Vegetation cover fractions for a vegetation cover analysis are retrieved from MODIS/Terra imagery from 2000 to 2006, being the period before and after the rising water level of the reservoir. Several analytical indices have been used to analyze spatial and temporal changes. Results indicate that cropland, woodland, and grassland areas reduced continuously over the past 30 years, while river and built-up area increased by 2.79% and 4.45% from 2000 to 2005, respectively. The built-up area increased at the cost of decreased cropland, woodland and grassland. The vegetation cover fraction increased slightly. We conclude that significant changes in land use/land cover have occurred in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area. The main cause is a continuous economic and urban/rural development, followed by environmental management policies after construction of the Three Gorges Dam. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Influencing factor analysis is required for assessing the performance of vegetation fractional coverage (VFC) models with remote sensing imagery. This paper analyses influences of the radiometric correction level (RL), vegetation index (VI) and polynomial exponential power (EP) choice on VI-VFC relationship models. A SPOT 5 HRG image of Nanjing, China was chosen, and three RLs (digital number, top of atmosphere reflectance and post atmospheric correction reflectance) were used to derive six VIs, such as normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and ratio vegetation index (RVI). Fifty-four models describing the VI-VFC relationship were established, and the influences of the RL, VI and EP choice on the VI-VFC models were analysed based on a statistical analysis of determination coefficients (R 2) of these models. The results showed that model robustness was jointly influenced by the three factors, so these three factors should be synthetically taken into account in VI-VFC modelling. Crop yield is a key element in rural development and an indicator of national food security. A method that could estimate crop yield over large hilly areas would be highly desirable. Methods including high spatial resolution satellite imagery have the potential to achieve this objective. This paper describes a method of integrating QuickBird imagery with a production efficiency model (PEM) to estimate crop yield in Zhonglianchuan, a hilly area on Loess Plateau, China. In the PEM model, crop yield is a function of the photosynthetic active radiation (PAR), fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (fAPAR) and light-use efficiency (LUE). Based on the high spatial resolution QuickBird imagery, a land cover classification is used to attribute a class-specific LUE. The fAPAR is related to spectral vegetation indices (SVI), which can be derived from the satellite images. The LUE, fAPAR and incident PAR data were combined to estimate the crop yield. Farmer-reported crop yield data in 80 representative plots were used to validate the model output. The results indicated QuickBird imagery can improve the accuracy of predicted results relative to the Landsat TM image. The predicted yield approximated well with the data reported by the farmers (r 2 =0.86; n =80). The spatial distributions of crop yield derived here also offers valuable information to manage agricultural production and understand ecosystem functioning. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Change detection of land cover from satellite images is emphasized in China as a result of rapid land cover changes. This paper discusses a method to calculate land cover changes based on fuzzy settings. In this method, land cover is regarded as fuzzy spatial objects rather than crisp objects. The fuzzy land cover is derived based on a fuzzy classification. The degree of change is then calculated using fuzzy reasoning. In order to minimize any errors in image matching, fuzzy polygons are adopted in the reasoning. By incorporating spectral value differences, the errors in image classification can be reduced considerably. The land cover changes from 1989 to 1998 in a part of Sanya City of China are inferred as an example. The results show that this fuzzy method is able to identify the land cover changes more precisely than the crisp method. The official method of collecting county-level GDP values in the Chinese Mainland relies mainly on administrative reporting data and suffers from high costs of time, money, and human labor. To date, a series of studies have been conducted to generate fine-grained maps of socioeconomic indicators from the easily accessed remote sensing data and achieved satisfactory results. This paper proposes a transfer learning framework that regards nightlight intensities as a proxy of economic activity degrees to estimate county-level GDP around the Chinese Mainland. In the framework, paired daytime satellite images and nightlight intensity levels were applied to train a VGG-16 architecture, and the output features at a specific layer, after dimensional reduction and statistics calculation, were fed into a simple regressor to estimate county-level GDP. We trained the model with data of 2017 and utilized it to predict county-level GDP of 2018, achieving an R-squared of 0.71. Furthermore, the results of gradient visualization confirmed the validity of the proposed framework qualitatively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that county-level GDP values around the Chinese Mainland have been estimated from both daytime and nighttime remote sensing data relying on attention-augmented CNN. Estimation of the number and geo-location of oil wells is important for policy holders considering their impact on energy resource planning. With the recent development in optical remote sensing, it is possible to identify oil wells from satellite images. Moreover, the recent advancement in deep learning frameworks for object detection in remote sensing makes it possible to automatically detect oil wells from remote sensing images. In this paper, we collected a dataset named Northeast Petroleum University–Oil Well Object Detection Version 1.0 (NEPU–OWOD V1.0) based on high-resolution remote sensing images from Google Earth Imagery. Our database includes 1192 oil wells in 432 images from Daqing City, which has the largest oilfield in China. In this study, we compared nine different state-of-the-art deep learning models based on algorithms for object detection from optical remote sensing images. Experimental results show that the state-of-the-art deep learning models achieve high precision on our collected dataset, which demonstrate the great potential for oil well detection in remote sensing. Mangrove forests are important ecosystems in the coastal intertidal zone, but China's mangroves have experienced a large reduction in area from the 1950s, and the remaining mangrove forests are exhibiting increased fragmentation. A detailed mangrove dataset of China is crucial for mangrove ecosystem management and protection, but the fragmented mangrove patches are hardly mapped by medium resolution satellite imagery. To overcome these difficulties, we presented a fine-scale mangrove map for 2018 using the 2-meter resolution Gaofen-1 and Ziyuan-3 satellite imagery together with field data. We employed a hybrid method of object-based image analysis (OBIA), interpreter editing, and field surveying for mangrove mapping. The field survey route reached 9500 km, and 2650 patches were verified during the field work. Accuracy assessment by confusion matrix showed that the kappa coefficient reached 0.98, indicating a highly thematic accuracy of the mangrove dataset. Results showed the total area of mangrove forest in China for 2018 was 25,683.88 hectares, and approximately 91% of mangroves were found in the three provinces of Guangdong, Guangxi, and Hainan. About 64% of mangroves were distributed in or near the nature reserves established by national or local governments, which indicated that China's mangroves were well protected in recent years. The new fine-scale mangrove dataset was freely shared together with this paper, and it can be used by local authorities and research groups for mangrove management and ecological planning. Water body extraction can help eco-environmental policymakers to intuitively grasp surface water resources. Remote sensing technology can accurately and quickly extract surface water information, which is of great significance for monitoring surface water changes. Fengyun satellite images have the advantages of high time resolution and multispectral bands. This provides important image data suitable for high-frequency surface water monitoring. Based on Fengyun 3 medium resolution spectral imager (FY-3/MERSI) data, 7 methods were applied in this study, which include single-band threshold method, water body index method, knowledge decision tree classification method, supervised classification method, unsupervised classification method, spectral matching based on discrete particle swarm optimization (SMDPSO), and improved spectral matching based on discrete particle swarm optimization with linear feature enhancement (SMDPSO+LFE). These methods were used to extract the land surface water of Poyang Lake, check the samples from the Landsat image with similar times to the FY-3 images, and calculate the classification accuracy via the confusion matrix. The results showed that the overall classification accuracy (OA) of the SMDPSO+LFE is 97.64%, and the Kappa coefficient is 0.95. To analyze the stability of the surface water extracted by SMDPSO+LFE in different regions, this paper selected eight test sites with different surface water types, landscapes, and terrains to extract surface water. Based on an analysis of the land surface water results at the eight test sites, every OA in the eight sites was higher than 94.5%, the Kappa coefficient was greater than 0.88. In conclusion, the SMDPSO+LFE is found to be the most suitable method among the 7 methods and effectively distinguish between different surface water bodies and backgrounds with good stability. Stereo photogrammetric survey used to be used to extract the height of buildings, then to convert the height to number of stories through certain rules to estimate the number of stories of buildings by means of satellite remote sensing. In contrast, we propose a new method using deep learning to estimate the number of stories of buildings from monocular optical satellite image end to end in this paper. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to directly estimate the number of stories of buildings from monocular satellite images. Specifically, in the proposed method, we extend a classic object detection network, i.e., Mask R-CNN, by adding a new head to predict the number of stories of detected buildings from satellite images. GF-2 images from nine cities in China are used to validate the effectiveness of the proposed methods. The result of experiment show that the mean absolute error of prediction on buildings whose stories between 1–7, 8–20, and above 20 are 1.329, 3.546, and 8.317, respectively, which indicate that our method has possible application potentials in low-rise buildings, but the accuracy in middle-rise and high-rise buildings needs to be further improved. Deep learning, which is a state-of-the-art image processing technique suitable for remote-sensing applications, can be used to learn nonlinear characteristics of images and is therefore applicable to the classification of small-scale coral reefs. This paper proposes a multi-scale method based on a convolutional neural network and support vector machine (CNN-SVM) to classify the coral reef habitats of Zhaoshu Island and Zhong Island in the Xisha Archipelago, China. This method combines spectrum, texture, and bidimensional empirical mode decomposition (BEMD) based scale separation algorithm to fully learn multi-scale information of coral reefs. Remote-sensing images captured by the WorldView-2 and Gaofen-2 (GF-2) satellites are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed CNN-SVM framework. The results indicate that the proposed method performs accurately and efficiently. Compared with SVM, random forest (RF), CNN, and CNN-RF, the overall accuracy is improved by 10.57 %, and the accuracy of classifying reef-clumping areas is improved by 17.44 %. Urban flooding is one of the most costly and destructive natural hazards worldwide. Remote-sensing images with high temporal resolutions have been extensively applied to timely inundation monitoring, assessing and mapping, but are limited by their low spatial resolution. Sub-pixel mapping has drawn great attention among researchers worldwide and has demonstrated a promising potential of high-accuracy mapping of inundation. Aimed to boost sub-pixel urban inundation mapping (SUIM) from remote-sensing imagery, a new algorithm based on spatial attraction models and Elman neural networks (SAMENN) was developed and examined in this paper. The Elman neural networks (ENN)-based SUIM module was developed firstly. Then a normalized edge intensity index of mixed pixels was generated. Finally the algorithm of SAMENN-SUIM was constructed and implemented. Landsat 8 images of two cities of China, which experienced heavy floods, were used in the experiments. Compared to three traditional SUIM methods, SAMENN-SUIM attained higher mapping accuracy according not only to visual evaluations but also quantitative assessments. The effects of normalized edge intensity index threshold and neuron number of the hidden layer on accuracy of the SAMENN-SUIM algorithm were analyzed and discussed. The newly developed algorithm in this study made a positive contribution to advancing urban inundation mapping from remote-sensing images with medium-low spatial resolutions, and hence can favor urban flood monitoring and risk assessment. As a novel means of researching China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), this article advances a critical remote sensing agenda that connects the view from above provided by satellite imagery with the grounded, qualitative methodologies more typical of political geography such as ethnographic fieldwork. Satellite imagery is widely used to produce empirics relating to the BRI, and the Chinese state is showing increasing interest in applying Earth observation data to governance. A more critical approach attentive to the politics of remote sensing, especially in light of China's emergence as a space and satellite power and its embrace of big data, is needed to more precisely reveal what changing pixels represent on the ground and expose the potential issues with data captured from high above the planet. This paper offers three theoretical and methodological objectives for critical remote sensing. First, I reflect on the geopolitics involved in the production and analysis of satellite imagery. Second, through analysis of night light imagery, which captures illuminated anthropogenic activities, I interrogate metanarratives of development. Third, I engage with qualitative methods by "ground-truthing" remote sensing with ethnographic observations along China's borders. I also seek to avoid the methodological nationalism often present in remote sensing research by situating these mixed-methods case studies at scales above and below the nation-state. As one of the largest development interventions in history materializes, pursuing critical remote sensing can create opportunities for social scientists to leverage quantitative and geospatial methods in support of more equitable and sustainable futures. As the largest developing country, China has experienced dramatic urban expansion since the "reform and opening-up" policy started at the end of the 1970s. In this paper, we monitor three decades of urban expansion in China's 36 major cities, based on the spectral mixture analysis of remotely sensed satellite images. The results demonstrated that these major cities have expanded by 5.85 times from 1986 to 2015, with 15.51 km2 average expansion area per city per year. We found the urban expansion trajectories showed three different modes, i.e., exponential, linear and s-shaped, which were closely related to the city development level. In the old city zones, however, there was an interesting common tendency of the impervious surface area (ISA) first increasing and then decreasing, which could be largely attributed to the phenomenon of urban village reconstruction in China's cities. Based on the Granger Causality Test (GCT), the interaction between urban ISA and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita (GDPPC) suggested that the former was the driver of the latter. Meanwhile, taking the Yangtze River as the division between north and south China, there exists a north–south territorial differentiation for the interaction between ISA and total population at the year-end (TP). Building extraction plays a significant role in many high-resolution remote sensing image applications. Many current building extraction methods need training samples while it is common knowledge that different samples often lead to different generalization ability. Morphological building index (MBI), representing morphological features of building regions in an index form, can effectively extract building regions especially in Chinese urban regions without any training samples and has drawn much attention. However, some problems like the heavy computation cost of multi-scale and multi-direction morphological operations still exist. In this paper, a multi-scale filtering building index (MFBI) is proposed in the hope of overcoming these drawbacks and dealing with the increasing noise in very high-resolution remote sensing image. The profile of multi-scale average filtering is averaged and normalized to generate this index. Moreover, to fully utilize the relatively little spectral information in very high-resolution remote sensing image, two scenarios to generate the multi-channel multi-scale filtering index (MMFBI) are proposed. While no high-resolution remote sensing image building extraction dataset is open to the public now and the current very high-resolution remote sensing image building extraction datasets usually contain samples from the Northern American or European regions, we offer a very high-resolution remote sensing image building extraction datasets in which the samples contain multiple building styles from multiple Chinese regions. The proposed MFBI and MMFBI outperform MBI and the currently used object based segmentation method on the dataset, with a high recall and F-score. Meanwhile, the computation time of MFBI and MBI is compared on three large-scale very high-resolution satellite image and the sensitivity analysis demonstrates the robustness of the proposed method.
