Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) represents a very powerful tool to assess the health condition of buildings. In recent years, the growing availability of high-resolution SAR satellite images has made possible the application of multi-temporal Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (MT-InSAR) techniques for structural monitoring purposes, with high precision, low costs, timesaving, and the possibility to investigate wide areas. However, a comprehensive validation of the effectiveness of MT-InSAR in this application field has not been achieved yet. For this reason, in this paper a comparison between interferometric data and on-site measurement of displacements is proposed. The application case study is the Civic Tower of the city of L'Aquila (Abruzzo Region, Italy). After the seismic events that affected the area in 2009, an on-site monitoring system was installed on the tower to detect any changes in the damage pattern in the period 2010–2013. Furthermore, images acquired by COSMO-SkyMed constellation in Stripmap mode (~3 m resolution) during the same period were processed by the Permanent Scatterer-InSAR (PSI) technique to estimate the deformation of the structure and the surrounding area. The obtained results indicate that both methods are consistent in the measurement of displacement trends of the building and a slight rotation/displacement of the tower was detected. Grassland fractional vegetation cover (FVC) accurate mapping on a large scale is crucial, since degraded grasslands contribute less to provisioning services, carbon storage, water purification, erosion control and biodiversity conservation. The spatial and temporal resolution of Sentinel-2 (S2) and PlanetScope (PS) data has never been explored for grassland FVC estimation so far and will enable researchers and agencies to quantify and map timelier and more precisely grassland processes. In this paper we compare FVC estimation models developed from Landsat-8 (L8), S2 and PS imagery. The reference grassland FVC dataset was obtained on the Paganella ski runs (46.15°N, 11.01°E, Italy) applying unsupervised classification to nadir grassland RGB photographs taken from 1.35 m above the soil. Fractional Response Models between reference FVC and 18 vegetation indices (VIs) extracted from satellite imagery were fitted and analysed. Then, leave-one-out cross validation and spatiotemporal change analysis were also performed. Our study confirms the robustness of the commonly used VIs based on the difference between NIR and the red wavelength region (R2 = 0.91 for EVI using S2 imagery) and indicate that VIs based on the red-edge spectral region are the best performing for PS imagery (R2 = 0.89 for RECI). Only medium to high spatial resolution imagery (S2 and PS) precisely mapped spatial patterns at the study site, since grasslands FVC varies at a fine scale. In recent years, space-borne InSAR (interferometric synthetic aperture radar) techniques have shown their capabilities to provide precise measurements of Earth surface displacements for monitoring natural processes. Landslides threaten human lives and structures, especially in urbanized areas, where the density of elements at risk sensitive to ground movements is high. The methodology described in this paper aims at detecting terrain motions and building deformations at the local scale, by means of satellite radar data combined with in situ validation campaigns. The proposed approach consists of deriving maximum settlement directions of the investigated buildings from displacement data revealed by radar measurements and then in the cross-comparison of these values with background geological data, constructive features and on-field evidence. This validation permits better understanding whether or not the detected movements correspond to visible and effective damages to buildings. The method has been applied to the southwestern sector of Volterra (Tuscany region, Italy), which is a landslide-affected and partially urbanized area, through the use of COSMO-SkyMed satellite images as input data. Moreover, we discuss issues and possible misinterpretations when dealing with PSI (Persistent Scatterer Interferometry) data referring to single manufactures and the consequent difficulty of attributing the motion rate to ground displacements, rather than to structural failures. Defining the most profitable remote sensing platforms is a difficult decision-making process, as it requires agronomic and economic considerations. In this paper, the price and profitability of three levels of remote sensing platforms were evaluated to define a decision-making process. Prices of satellite, plane and UAV-acquired vegetation indices were collected in Italy during 2020 and compared to the economic benefits resulting from variable rate nitrogen application, according to a bibliographic meta-analysis performed on grains. The quality comparison of these three technologies was performed considering the error propagation in the NDVI formula. The errors of the single bands were used to assess the optical properties of the sensors. Results showed that medium-resolution satellite data with good optical properties could be profitably used for variable rate nitrogen applications starting from 2.5 hectares, in case of medium resolution with good optical properties. High-resolution satellites with lower optical quality were profitable starting from 13.2 hectares, while very high-resolution satellites with good optical properties could be profitably used starting from 76.8 hectares. Plane-acquired images, which have good optical properties, were profitable starting from 66.4 hectares. Additionally, a reference model for satellite image price is proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cyanobacteria are ubiquitous photosynthetic microorganisms considered as important contributors to the formation of Earth's atmosphere and to the process of nitrogen fixation. However, they are also frequently associated with toxic blooms, named cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs). This paper reports on an unusual out-of-season cyanoHAB and its dynamics during the COVID-19 pandemic, in Lake Avernus, South Italy. Fast detection strategy (FDS) was used to assess this phenomenon, through the integration of satellite imagery and biomolecular investigation of the environmental samples. Data obtained unveiled a widespread Microcystis sp. bloom in February 2020 (i.e., winter season in Italy), which completely disappeared at the end of the following COVID-19 lockdown, when almost all urban activities were suspended. Due to potential harmfulness of cyanoHABs, crude extracts from the "winter bloom" were evaluated for their cytotoxicity in two different human cell lines, namely normal dermal fibroblasts (NHDF) and breast adenocarcinoma cells (MCF-7). The chloroform extract was shown to exert the highest cytotoxic activity, which has been correlated to the presence of cyanotoxins, i.e., microcystins, micropeptins, anabaenopeptins, and aeruginopeptins, detected by molecular networking analysis of liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) data. Knowledge of a territory is an essential element in any future planning action and in appropriate territorial and environmental requalification action planning. The current large-scale availability of satellite data, thanks to very high resolution images, provides professional users in the environmental, urban planning, engineering, and territorial government sectors, in general, with large amounts of useful data with which to monitor the territory and cultural heritage. Italy is experiencing environmental emergencies, and coastal erosion is one of the greatest threats, not only to the Italian heritage and economy, but also to human life. The aim of this paper is to find a rapid way of identifying the instantaneous shoreline. This possibility could help government institutions such as regions, civil protection, etc., to analyze large areas of land quickly. The focus is on instantaneous shoreline extraction in Ortona (CH, Italy), without considering tides, using WorldView-2 satellite images (50-cm resolution in panchromatic and 2 m in multispectral). In mountainous landscapes, where strongly deformed pelitic sediments outcrop, earthflows can dominate denudation processes and landscape evolution. This paper investigated geological and geomorphological features and space-time evolution over a 65-year time span (1954–2019) of a large earthflow, representative of wide sectors of the Apennine chain of southern Italy. The landslide, with a maximum length of 1.85 × 103 m, affects an area of 4.21 × 105 m2 and exhibits two source zones: a narrow and elongated transport zone and a lobate accumulation zone. Spatial and temporal morphological changes of the earthflow were assessed, comparing multi-source and multi-temporal data (aerial photographs, Google Earth satellite images, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) system data). Geomorphic changes, quantified using Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) of differences, highlighted an extensive lowering of the topographic surface in the source area and a significant uplift at the landslide toe. Moreover, the multi-temporal analysis showed a high increase of landslide surface (more than 66%) during the last 65 years. The volumetric analyses showed that different sectors of the earthflow were active at different times, with different rates of topographic change. Overall, the used approach highlighted the great potentiality of the integration of multi-source and multi-temporal data for the diachronic reconstruction of morphological landslide evolution. Slow-moving landslides are widespread natural hazards that can affect both social and economic activities causing damage to structures and infrastructure networks. This paper aims at providing an innovative simplified procedure to analyse road damage induced by slow-moving landslides based on the joint use of landslide inventory maps, a road damage database (collecting both the results of in-situ surveys and Google Street View images) and ground displacement measurements derived from the interferometric processing of satellite SAR images (DInSAR data). The procedure was applied to the case study of the Calabria region (southern Italy) following a two-scale approach. First, a regional-scale analysis was carried out to gather information on the level of road exposure (namely, Index of Exposed Roads) to slow-moving landslides in order to identify the most representative case studies. Then at local scale, relationships between road damage severity level and a selected parameter (i.e. differential settlement computed in two different ways) of slow-moving landslide intensity were derived for two road stretches that differ in geo-lithological and topographic conditions. The results underline the importance of the availability of both reliable landslide inventories and rich road damage databases as well as the potential of high-resolution DInSAR data for obtaining quantitative information on movement rates of roads useful to carry out in-depth studies pursing vulnerability analyses of the infrastructure. • Road damage and slow-moving landslide displacements are correlated in different geo-lithological and topographic conditions. • DInSAR data allow for the recognition of sections of the road network affected by displacements. • Very high-resolution DInSAR data are preferable for local scale analyses of road sections. • Google Street View is a potential tool for rapid road damage inspections. • The systematic application of this procedure could help quantitative analyses of landslide-induced road damage forecasting.
