Riparian zones (RZs) have a clear distinct behaviour than the rest of the landscape. Particularly in water-limited regions, such as the Brazilian Savannah (Cerrado biome), where dry season may extend 5 months, the difference between riparian and upland zones is highly pronounced due to vegetation water access to groundwater, and this can have implications on the climatic and hydrological cycles. In order to quantify this difference at large-scale, it was herein proposed to (1) map RZs using topographical information, (2) investigate how land cover is distributed among topographic gradients and (3) investigate vegetation behaviour through remote sensing vegetation measurements and evapotranspiration (ET) estimation. A 140,000 km² upland region inside the Cerrado biome, called the Urucuia aquifer system, was chosen as study site. The region has seen a huge agricultural expansion during the last decades, with mechanized and irrigated crops increasingly using water from its underground reserves, which associated with climate change can have a big impact on the ecosystem, and understanding the role of RZs can be essential to quantify this impact. The height above nearest drainage (HAND) index was used to map RZs, by visually assessing bellow which values the index provided a reasonable RZ buffer comparing with Google Earth imagery. We also used HAND to quantify across its values the historical land cover distribution obtained by the MapBiomas database, and analyse vegetation behaviour in RZs and upland zones (UZs) using remote sensing vegetation measurements of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and normalized difference moisture index (NDMI) and ET estimation from the surface energy balance algorithm for land (SEBAL). A necessary step for HAND computation is a defined stream network, for which the main challenge is identifying channel heads. Herein it was developed an algorithm that produced a varying draining area threshold (vDAT) map for channel initiation, using the topographic position index (TPI) as an auxiliary variable. This algorithm was tested using MERIT-DEM. With the stream network, HAND values bellow 5 m provided the best RZ buffer. As for land cover distribution, we captured that forests naturally occur more densely in the extreme values of HAND (very shallow and very deep) and that farmland historical occupation in the Urucuia region occur more in the upper portions of the terrain, possibly due to soil conditions stablished during landscape formation and evolution. As for vegetation activity, the land cover class seems to have more influence on vegetation behaviour than topographic position, for all indicators computed. Yet, NDMI values in Riparian Forests are greater than in Upland Forests, particularly towards drier conditions, in terms of both seasonality (drier months) and inter-annual variability (drier years). Despite this indication of more water available in RZs than UZs, the ET estimation could not capture these differences, possibly due to difficulties in estimating this variable in natural vegetation with high degree of water stress.

Le bassin Amazonien est connu comme le plus grand système hydrologique du monde et pour son rôle important sur le système terre, influençant le cycle du carbone et le climat global. Les pressions anthropiques récentes, telles que la déforestation, les changements climatiques, la construction de barrage hydro-électriques, ainsi que l’augmentation des crues et sécheresse extrêmes qui se produisent dans cette région, motivent l’étude de l’hydrologie du bassin Amazonien. Dans le même temps, des méthodes hydrologiques de modélisation et de surveillance par observation satellitaire ont été développées qui peuvent fournir les bases techniques à cette fin. Ce travail a eu pour objectif la compréhension et la prévision du régime hydrologique du bassin Amazonien. Nous avons développé et évaluer des techniques de modélisation hydrologique-hydrodynamique de grande échelle, d’assimilation de données in situ et spatiales et de prévision hydrologique. L’ensemble de ces techniques nous a permis d’explorer le fonctionnement du bassin Amazonien en terme de processus physiques et de prévisibilité hydrologique. Nous avons utilisé le modèle hydrologique-hydrodynamique de grande échelle MGB-IPH pour simuler le bassin, le forçage précipitation étant fourni par l’observation spatiale. Les résultats de la modélisation sont satisfaisants lorsque validés à partir de données in situ de débit et de hauteurs d’eau mais également de données dérivées de l’observation spatiale incluant les niveaux d’eau déduits de l’altimétrie radar, le contenu en eau total issu de la gravimétrie satellitaire, l’extension des zones inondées. Nous avons montré que les eaux superficielles sont responsables en grande partie de la variation du stock total d’eau, l’influence des grands plans d’eau sur la variabilité spatiale des précipitations et l’influence des plaines d’inondation et des effets de remous sur la propagation des ondes de crues. Nos analyses ont montré le rôle prépondérant des conditions initiales, en particulier des eaux superficielles, pour la prévisibilité des grands fleuves Amazoniens, la connaissance des précipitations futures n’ayant qu’une influence secondaire. Ainsi, pour améliorer l’estimation des variables d’état hydrologiques, nous avons développé, pour la première fois, un schéma d’assimilation de données pour un modèle hydrologique-hydrodynamique de grande échelle, pour l’assimilation de données de jaugeages in situ et dérivées de l’altimétrie radar (débit et hauteur d’eau), dont les résultats se sont montrés satisfaisants. Nous avons également développé un prototype de système de prévision des débits pour le bassin Amazonien, basé sur le modèle initialisé avec les conditions initiales optimales fournies par le schéma d’assimilation de données, et en utilisant la pluie estimée par satellite disponible en temps réel. Les résultats ont été prometteurs, le modèle étant capable de prévoir les débits dans les principaux fleuves Amazoniens avec une antécédence importante (entre 1 et 3 mois), permettant d’anticiper, par exemple, la sècheresse extrême de 2005. Ces résultats démontrent le potentiel de la modélisation hydrologique appuyé par l’observation spatiale pour la prévision des débits avec une grande antécédence dans les grands bassins versant mondiaux. A bacia Amazônica se destaca como o principal sistema hidrológico do mundo e pelo seu importante papel no sistema terrestre, influenciando o ciclo de carbono e o clima global. Recentes pressões antrópicas, como o desflorestamento, mudanças climáticas e a construção de barragens hidroelétricas, somados às crescentes cheias e secas extremas ocorridas nesta região, motivam o estudo da hidrologia da bacia Amazônica. Ao mesmo tempo, têm se desenvolvido métodos hidrológicos de modelagem e monitoramento via sensoriamento remoto que podem fornecer as bases técnicas para este fim. Este trabalho objetivou a compreensão e previsão da hidrologia da bacia Amazônica. Foram desenvolvidas e avaliadas diversas técnicas, incluindo de modelagem hidrológica-hidrodinâmica de larga escala, de assimilação de dados in situ e de sensoriamento remoto, e de previsão hidrológica. Este conjunto de técnicas foi utilizado para compreender o funcionamento da bacia Amazônica em termos de seus processos hidrológicos e sua previsibilidade hidrológica. O modelo hidrológico-hidrodinâmico de larga escala MGB-IPH foi utilizado para simular a bacia, sendo forçado com dados de chuva estimados por satélite. O modelo mostrou bom desempenho em uma validação detalhada contra observações de vazões e cotas in situ além de dados oriundos de sensoriamento remoto, incluindo níveis d’água de altimetria por radar, armazenamento d’água de gravimetria espacial e extensão de áreas alagadas. Mostrou-se a dominância das águas superficiais nas variações do armazenamento de água, a influência dos grandes corpos d’água sobre a variabilidade espacial da precipitação, além da importância das várzeas da inundação e efeitos de remanso sobre a propagação das ondas de cheia Amazônicas. As condições hidrológicas iniciais, com destaque para as águas superficiais, mostraram dominar a previsibilidade hidrológica nos grandes rios amazônicos, tendo assim a precipitação no futuro um papel secundário. Portanto, afim de melhor estimar os estados hidrológicos, de forma pioneira, foi desenvolvido um esquema de assimilação de dados para um modelo hidrológicohidrodinâmico de larga escala para assimilar informações in situ e de altimetria por radar, cujo desempenho se mostrou satisfatório. Desenvolveu-se também um protótipo de sistema de previsão de vazões para a bacia Amazônica, baseado no modelo inicializado com condições iniciais ótimas do esquema de assimilação de dados e utilizando precipitação estimada por satélite disponível em tempo real. Os resultados foram promissores e o modelo foi capaz de prever vazões nos principais rios amazônicos com grande antecedência (~1 a 3 meses), antecipando, por exemplo, a grande seca de 2005. Estes resultados mostram o potencial da modelagem hidrológica de larga escala apoiada por informação de sensoriamento remoto na previsão de vazões com alta antecedência nas grandes bacias hidrográficas do mundo. The Amazon basin is known as the world’s main hydrological system and by its important role in the earth system, carbon cycle and global climate. Recent anthropogenic pressure, such as deforestation, climate change and the construction of hydropower dams, together with increasing extreme floods and droughts, encourage the research on the hydrology of the Amazon basin. On the other hand, hydrological methods for modeling and remotely sensed observation are being developed, and can be used for this goal. This work aimed at understanding and forecasting the hydrology of the Amazon River basin. We developed and evaluated techniques for large scale hydrologic-hydrodynamic modeling, data assimilation of both in situ and remote sensing data and hydrological forecasting. By means of these techniques, we explored the functioning of the Amazon River basin, in terms of its physical processes and its hydrological predictability. We used the MGB-IPH large scale hydrologichydrodynamic model forced by satellite-based precipitation. The model had a good performance when extensively validated against in situ discharge and stage measurements and also remotely sensed data, including radar altimetry-based water levels, gravimetric-based terrestrial water storage and flood inundation extent. We showed that surface waters governs most of the terrestrial water storage changes, the influence of large water bodies on precipitation spatial variability and the importance of the floodplains and backwater effects on the routing of the Amazon floodwaves. Analyses showed the dominant role of hydrological initial conditions, mainly surface waters, on hydrological predictability on the main Amazon Rivers, while the knowledge of future precipitation may be secondary. Aiming at the optimal estimation of these hydrological states, we developed, for the first time, a data assimilation scheme for both gauged and satellite altimetry-based discharge and water levels into a large scale hydrologic-hydrodynamic model, and it showed a good performance. We also developed a forecast system prototype, where the model is based on initial conditions gathered by the data assimilation scheme and forced by satellite-based precipitation. Results are promising and the model was able to provide accurate discharge forecasts in the main Amazon rivers even for very large lead times (~1 to 3 months), predicting, for example, the historical 2005 drought. These results point to the potential of large scale hydrological models supported with remote sensing information for providing hydrological forecasts well in advance at world’s large rivers and poorly monitored regions.

A vegetação tropical é uma das maiores fontes de evapotranspiração e desempenha um papel importante na dinâmica climática global e nos processos de produtividade primária de ecossistemas terrestres, uma vez que se encontra diretamente ligada aos processos de transferência de massa e energia. Objetivou-se nesta tese de doutorado avaliar a acurácia das estimativas de ET baseadas em modelos de sensoriamento remoto quando comparadas a medições pontuais obtidas a partir de torres de fluxo e a partir do fechamento do balanço hídrico a médio e longo prazo. Foram selecionados dois modelos: para escalas locais e regionais usou-se o algoritmo SEBAL, enquanto que para escalas continentais e globais utilizou-se o algoritmo MOD16. Em relação ao algoritmo SEBAL, a metodologia empregada apresentou bons resultados tanto nas estimativas pontuais dos fluxos de calor latente quanto em relação ao fechamento do balanço hídrico em grandes áreas. Em relação ao algoritmo MOD16, verificou-se que as estimativas de evapotranspiração apresentam melhores resultados a longo prazo e em grandes áreas. As análises aqui realizadas sugerem que os algoritmos SEBAL e MOD16 podem capturar razoavelmente bem as respostas da vegetação em relação à variabilidade espacial e temporal em larga escala. Considerando que esses algoritmos podem ser aplicados desde escalas regionais até escalas globais, os resultados estão em um intervalo aceitável de acurácia, indicando um potencial significativo no monitoramento espacial e temporal do processo de ET de forma contínua e sistemática a partir de informações obtidas por sensoriamento remoto. Tropical vegetation is a major source of global land surface evapotranspiration (ET) and plays an important role in the global climate dynamics and in the processes of primary production of terrestrial ecosystems, since it is directly linked to the mass transfer and energy balance. The aim of this doctoral thesis was to evaluate the accuracy of ET estimates based on remote sensing models when compared to measurements obtained from flux towers and hydrological models. Two algorithms were selected: for local and regional scales SEBAL was used, while for continental and global scales, MOD16 was adopted. Regarding SEBAL algorithm, the applied methodology showed that significant results were achieved in both latent heat flux and water balance over large areas. Concerning MOD16 algorithm, the research suggested that evapotranspiration estimates showed better results in the long-term and in large areas. The analysis suggests that MOD16 and SEBAL algorithms can capture reasonably well the responses of vegetation in relation to spatial and temporal variability on a large scale. Taking into consideration that these algorithms can be applied from regional to global scales, the results are in an acceptable range of accuracy, indicating a significant potential for monitoring evapotranspiration using remote sensing data.

As estimativas de chuva por meio do sensoriamento remoto são, atualmente, fonte potencialmente útil para as mais diversas aplicações hidrológicas e climatológicas, especialmente em regiões onde as medições convencionais são escassas, como a Amazônia. Neste trabalho, foram analisadas as estimativas de chuva por satélite como variáveis de entrada ao modelo hidrológico MGB-IPH (Collischonn, 2001). Este modelo simula o ciclo hidrológico através das relações físicas e conceituais de todo processo, sendo os produtos de chuva por satélite avaliados o 3B42, 3B42RT e CMORPH. A primeira área de estudo é a bacia do rio Huallaga localizada dentro do território do Peru, região caracterizada por ter uma topografia complexa e pertencente a uma das nascentes do rio Amazonas. A segunda avaliação foi feita para a bacia do rio Amazonas, sendo esta caracterizada por ter uma grande variabilidade climatológica a diferentes altitudes e regimes hidrológicos diferentes, além de uma pobre distribuição de postos pluviométricos. No caso da bacia do rio Huallaga foram realizadas comparações da chuva média estimada por satélite com observada em intervalos de tempo diário, mensal, sazonal e anual. Estes resultados mostram que os produtos 3B42 e CMORPH subestimam valores médios da bacia comparada com chuva média ponderada por pluviômetros. Na simulação da bacia do rio Huallaga se efetuaram calibrações dos parâmetros para cada fonte de chuva resultando com melhor ajuste de vazões máximas para o produto CMORPH e pior ajuste para o produto 3B42, estes ajustes melhoraram para a chuva do produto CMORPH corrigido com estações pluviométricas. Por outra parte, no caso de análises da bacia do rio Amazonas, foi calculada a chuva média anual para os três produtos de satélite (3B42, 3B42RT e CMORPH), os resultados mostraram maior chuva média a favor de CMORPH, seguido de 3B42RT e finalmente o produto 3B42. A simulação da bacia do rio Amazonas mostrou melhores coeficientes de Nash-Sutcliffe com o produto 3B42 em várias estações do Brasil. Com o produto 3B42RT mostram melhores coeficientes nas estações localizadas na rede principal do rio Amazonas, e com o produto CMORPH mostrou melhores coeficientes em algumas estações como na bacia dos rios Tapajós (Brasil) e Urubamba (Peru). Currently, satellite rainfall estimates using remote sensing are a potential source of information for hydrological and climatological applications. It applies mainly for regions where conventional measurements are scarce such as the Amazon Basin. In this work, the satellite rainfall estimates were analyzed as input variables to the hydrological model MGBIPH (Collischonn, 2001). This model simulates the hydrological cycle through physical and conceptual relationships where products 3B42, 3B42RT and CMORPH are evaluated. The first evaluation case corresponds to the Huallaga basin located in Peru, being one of the current Amazon highlands characterized by a complex topography. The second evaluation case corresponds to the Amazon basin characterized by a great climatological variability at different altitudes, different hydrological regimes and poor distributions of raingauges. In the case of the Huallaga River basin, comparisons were made between the estimated average satellite rainfall and the observed rainfall for different intervals of time (daily, monthly, seasonal and annual). These results show that the products 3B42 and CMORPH underestimate the basin average rainfall when compared with the weighted average of raingauge measurements. During the Huallaga basin simulation, calibrations of some parameters for each rainfall data were realized. Obtaining the best and worst fitting results with the CMORPH and 3B42 products for the case of maximum discharges, respectively. This rainfall fitting improves for the CMORPH product when raingauge corrections are included. On the other hand, the annual average rainfall value was obtained for each satellite product (3B42, 3B42RT e CMORPH) for the analysis of the Amazon basin. In this calculation, the greater results for the annual average rainfall values are obtained in the following order CMORPH, 3B42RT and 3B42. Moreover, this simulation seems to yield best Nash-Sutcliffe coefficients for the 3B42 product for various Brazilian stations. For stations located in the main stream of the Amazon River the Nash-Sutcliffe coefficients obtained with the 3B42RT product are the best. The CMORPH product yield the best coefficients for the stations located in Tapajós (Brazil) and Urubamba (Peru) basin.
