The Arctic is very susceptible to climate change and thus is warming much faster than the rest of the world. Clouds influence terrestrial and solar radiative fluxes and thereby impact the amplified Arctic warming. The partitioning of thermodynamic phases (i.e., ice crystals and water droplets) within mixed-phase clouds (MPCs) especially influences their radiative properties. However, the processes responsible for ice crystal formation remain only partially characterized. In particular, so-called secondary ice production (SIP) processes, which create supplementary ice crystals from primary ice crystals and the environmental conditions that they occur in, are poorly understood. The microphysical properties of Arctic MPCs were measured during the Ny-Ålesund AeroSol Cloud ExperimENT (NASCENT) campaign to obtain a better understanding of the atmospheric conditions favorable for the occurrence of SIP processes. To this aim, the in situ cloud microphysical properties retrieved by a holographic cloud imager mounted on a tethered balloon system were complemented by ground-based remote sensing and ice-nucleating particle measurements. During the 6 d investigated in this study, SIP occurred during about 40 % of the in-cloud measurements, and high SIP events with number concentrations larger than 10 L -1 of small pristine ice crystals occurred in 4 % of the in-cloud measurements. This demonstrates the role of SIP for Arctic MPCs. The highest concentrations of small pristine ice crystals were produced at temperatures between -5 and -3 ∘ C and were related to the occurrence of supercooled large droplets freezing upon collision with ice crystals. This suggests that a large fraction of ice crystals in Arctic MPCs are produced via the droplet-shattering mechanism. From evaluating the ice crystal images, we could identify ice–ice collision as a second SIP mechanism that dominated when fragile ice crystals were observed. Moreover, SIP occurred over a large temperature range and was observed in up to 80 % of the measurements down to -24 ∘ C due to the occurrence of ice–ice collisions. This emphasizes the importance of SIP at temperatures below -8 ∘ C, which are currently not accounted for in most numerical weather models. Although ice-nucleating particles may be necessary for the initial freezing of water droplets, the ice crystal number concentration is frequently determined by secondary production mechanisms. A cloud particle sensor (CPS) sonde is an observing system attached with a radiosonde sensor to observe the vertical structure of cloud properties. The signals obtained from CPS sondes are related to the phase, size, and number of cloud particles. The system offers economic advantages including human resource and simple operation costs compared with aircraft measurements and land-/satellite-based remote sensing. However, the observed information should be appropriately corrected because of several uncertainties. Here we made field experiments in the Arctic region by launching approximately 40 CPS sondes between 2018 and 2020. Using these data sets, a better practical correction method was proposed to exclude unreliable data, estimate the effective cloud water droplet radius, and determine a correction factor for the total cloud particle count. We apply this method to data obtained in October 2019 over the Arctic Ocean and March 2020 at Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, Norway, to compare with a particle counter aboard a tethered balloon and liquid water content retrieved by a microwave radiometer. The estimated total particle count and liquid water content from the CPS sondes generally agree with those data. Although further development and validation of CPS sondes based on dedicated laboratory experiments would be required, the practical correction approach proposed here would offer better advantages in retrieving quantitative information on the vertical distribution of cloud microphysics under the condition of a lower number concentration. For the first time, the cloud radiative effect (CRE) has been characterized for the Arctic site Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, Norway, including more than 2 years of data (June 2016–September 2018). The cloud radiative effect, that is, the difference between the all-sky and equivalent clear-sky net radiative fluxes, has been derived based on a combination of ground-based remote sensing observations of cloud properties and the application of broadband radiative transfer simulations. The simulated fluxes have been evaluated in terms of a radiative closure study. Good agreement with observed surface net shortwave (SW) and longwave (LW) fluxes has been found, with small biases for clear-sky (SW: 3.8 W m−2; LW: −4.9 W m−2) and all-sky (SW: −5.4 W m−2; LW: −0.2 W m−2) situations. For monthly averages, uncertainties in the CRE are estimated to be small (~2 W m−2). At Ny-Ålesund, the monthly net surface CRE is positive from September to April/May and negative in summer. The annual surface warming effect by clouds is 11.1 W m−2. The longwave surface CRE of liquid-containing cloud is mainly driven by liquid water path (LWP) with an asymptote value of 75 W m−2 for large LWP values. The shortwave surface CRE can largely be explained by LWP, solar zenith angle, and surface albedo. Liquid-containing clouds (LWP > 5 g m−2) clearly contribute most to the shortwave surface CRE (70%–98%) and, from late spring to autumn, also to the longwave surface CRE (up to 95%). Only in winter are ice clouds (IWP > 0 g m−2; LWP < 5 g m−2) equally important or even dominating the signal in the longwave surface CRE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ground-based measurements of the hemispherical-directional reflectance factor (HDRF) of windblown snow-covered Arctic tundra were measured at large solar zenith angles ( 79^\circ– 85^\circ ) for six sites near the international research base in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard. Measurements were made with the Gonio RAdiometric Spectrometer System over the viewing angles 0^\circ– 50^\circ and the azimuth angles 0^\circ– 360^\circ , for the wavelength range 400–1700 nm. The HDRF measurements showed good consistency between sites for near-nadir and backward viewing angles, with a relative standard deviation of less than 10% between sites where the snowpack was smooth and the snow depth was greater than 40 cm. The averaged HDRF showed good symmetry with respect to the solar principal plane and exhibited a forward scattering peak that was strongly wavelength dependent, with greater than a factor of 2 increase in the ratio of maximum to minimum HDRF values for all viewing angles over the wavelength range 400–1300 nm. The angular effects on the HDRF had minimal influence for viewing angles less than 15^\circ in the backward viewing direction for the averaged sites and agreed well with another study of snow HDRF for infrared wavelengths, but showed differences of up to 0.24 in the HDRF for visible wavelengths owing to light-absorbing impurities measured in the snowpack. The site that had the largest roughness elements showed the strongest anisotropy in the HDRF, a large reduction in forward scattering, and a strong asymmetry with respect to the solar principal plane. The impact of aerosol spatio-temporal variability on the Arctic radiative budget is not fully constrained. This case study focuses on the intra-Arctic modification of long-range transported aerosol and its direct aerosol radiative effect (ARE). Different types of air-borne and ground-based remote sensing observations (from Lidar and sun-photometer) revealed a high tropospheric aerosol transport episode over two parts of the European Arctic in April 2018. By incorporating the derived aerosol optical and microphysical properties into a radiative transfer model, we assessed the ARE over the two locations. Our study displayed that even in neighboring Arctic upper tropospheric levels, aged aerosol was transformed due to the interplay of removal processes (nucleation scavenging and dry deposition) and alteration of the aerosol source regions (northeast Asia and north Europe). Along the intra-Arctic transport, the coarse aerosol mode was depleted and the visible wavelength Lidar ratio (LR) increased significantly (from 15 to 64–82 sr). However, the aerosol modifications were not reflected on the ARE. More specifically, the short-wave (SW) atmospheric column ARE amounted to +4.4 - +4.9 W m−2 over the ice-covered Fram Strait and +4.5 W m−2 over the snow-covered Ny-Ålesund. Over both locations, top-of-atmosphere (TOA) warming was accompanied by surface cooling. These similarities can be attributed to the predominant accumulation mode, which drives the SW radiative budget, as well as to the similar layer altitude, solar geometry, and surface albedo conditions over both locations. Clouds strongly impact the available energy at the surface and at the top of the atmosphere as well as its vertical distribution within the atmosphere by modifying the shortwave (SW) and longwave (LW) fluxes and heating rates. The so-called cloud radiative effect (CRE) and the cloud radiative forcing (CRF), i.e. the difference between the all-sky and clear-sky fluxes and heating rates, respectively, strongly depend on the cloud macrophysical (e.g. frequency of occurrence, cloud vertical distribution) and microphysical (e.g. phase, water content, hydrometeor size distribution) properties.In the Arctic, the cloud–radiative interactions are even more complex due to low temperatures, frequently occurring temperature inversions, the dryness of the atmosphere, large solar zenith angles and a high surface albedo. In particular (supercooled) liquid containing clouds, which frequently occur in the Arctic and often have very low amounts of liquid water, exhibit a strong impact on the radiative fluxes.For the first time, the impact of clouds on the shortwave (SW) and longwave (LW) fluxes and heating rates is estimated for Ny-Ålesund exploiting more than 2 years (06/2016 -10/2018) of continuous vertical cloud measurements at the French-German research station AWIPEV. To this end, cloud macro- and microphysical properties have been retrieved from ground-based remote sensing observations (cloud radar, ceilometer) and used as input for the Rapid Radiative Transfer Model RRTMG. Further input data, e.g. thermodynamic profiles, as well as aerosol and surface albedo information, have been generated from numerical weather prediction model data and from observations of further AWIPEV instrumentation. In general, the agreement between simulated and observed SW and LW downward surface fluxes is very good with only a small bias in both clear-sky and cloudy conditions. Regarding the surface CRE, low-level liquid clouds lead to a warming (~50 Wm-2) throughout the year. During polar day, clouds strongly cool the surface in the SW with a large daily variability. The net CRE at the surface is generally positive between September and May and negative from June to August which is due to the low surface albedo. The net CRF is dominated by the LW CRF with warming taking place in principal below the height of the maximum frequency of occurrence of liquid around 1 km, and cooling above. Abstract: In this work, a closure experiment for tropospheric aerosol is presented. Aerosol size distributions and single scattering albedo from remote sensing data are compared to those measured in-situ. An aerosol pollution event on 4 April 2009 was observed by ground based and airborne lidar and photometer in and around Ny-Ålesund, Spitsbergen, as well as by DMPS, nephelometer and particle soot absorption photometer at the nearby Zeppelin Mountain Research Station. The presented measurements were conducted in an area of 40 × 20 km around Ny-Ålesund as part of the 2009 Polar Airborne Measurements and Arctic Regional Climate Model Simulation Project (PAMARCMiP). Aerosol mainly in the accumulation mode was found in the lower troposphere, however, enhanced backscattering was observed up to the tropopause altitude. A comparison of meteorological data available at different locations reveals a stable multi-layer-structure of the lower troposphere. It is followed by the retrieval of optical and microphysical aerosol parameters. Extinction values have been derived using two different methods, and it was found that extinction (especially in the UV) derived from Raman lidar data significantly surpasses the extinction derived from photometer AOD profiles. Airborne lidar data shows volume depolarization values to be less than 2.5% between 500 m and 2.5 km altitude, hence, particles in this range can be assumed to be of spherical shape. In-situ particle number concentrations measured at the Zeppelin Mountain Research Station at 474 m altitude peak at about 0.18 μm diameter, which was also found for the microphysical inversion calculations performed at 850 m and 1500 m altitude. Number concentrations depend on the assumed extinction values, and slightly decrease with altitude as well as the effective particle diameter. A low imaginary part in the derived refractive index suggests weakly absorbing aerosols, which is confirmed by low black carbon concentrations, measured at the Zeppelin Mountain as well as on board the Polar 5 aircraft. Aerosol strongly affect the radiation balance, especially in the Arctic where climate change is significantly faster compared to lower latitudes. The interaction between aerosol and radiation can be either direct (scattering and absorption) or indirect (aerosol serving as cloud condensation nuclei and ice nucleating particles). Aerosol optical properties can be provided by Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) systems with high spatial and temporal resolution. In this study, we utilize data from a ground-based Lidar system located in Ny-Ålesund, Spitsbergen and an air-borne system installed onboard the research aircraft Polar5. Our focus is on a rare event of elevated aerosol layers, which persistently appeared over two different parts of the European Arctic during PAMARCMiP (Polar Air-borne Measurements and Arctic Regional Climate Model Simulation Project) campaign in spring 2018. Results show that the detected layers exhibit similar optical properties, namely aerosol backscatter coefficient, which is indicative of aerosol abundance and aerosol depolarization ratio, which is an indicator of the aerosol shape. The main hypothesis is that although the existence of those layers is rare, they impact on the radiation budget of the Arctic. In the next steps of our research, we will investigate the occurrence of similar aerosol layers in the springtime of previous years using long-term measurements from the Lidar system located in Ny-Ålesund. Our goal is to assess the effect of different aerosol layers on the surface radiation budget and gain a better understanding of their role in the amplified Arctic climate change, utilizing radiation measurements from the Ny-Ålesund BSRN (Baseline Surface Radiation Network) station.
