An intense dust storm from 8 April to 11 April 2023 originated from the Gobi deserts bordering Mongolia and Inner Mongolia of China and affected most parts of northern, central, and eastern China, the Korean Peninsula, and Japan. It has a significant impact on air quality in these regions and alters the optical and microphysical properties of the aerosols. In this work, a comprehensive analysis of the storm was carried out by using reanalysis data, model simulation, satellite, and ground-based observations. The geopotential height along with the wind flow reveals that the development, transportation, and dissipation of the dust storms were closely related to the movement of the Mongolia cyclones caused by Mongolia low and its surrounding highs. The Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO) data showed a two-layer dust vertical distribution, with the bottom one below 5 km and the upper one stretching from 5 to 10 km over the Japan Sea. The Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory model (HYSPLIT) backward trajectory uncovered Central Mongolia being the origin of the dust storm that arrived over the Japan Sea on April 9, 2022, and the forward trajectory revealed that the dust aerosols would be further transported to the Pacific Ocean. Air quality analysis demonstrated that the regions of inner Mongolia (IMG) and Jing-Jin-Ji (JJJ) suffered the most from the dust storm events, followed by the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), while the Pearl River Delta (PRD) was hardly affected, as indicated by the regional-averaged PM 10 and PM 2.5. It was also found that the dust storm event has almost no significant influence on the other air quality indicators including CO, NO 2 , O 3 , and SO 2. Historical record tracking revealed that the springtime averaged PM 10 and PM 2.5 of the year 2023 are comparable to those in 2021 which has the record-breaking dust storm case. AERONET data indicated dramatic increments of aerosol optical depth at 550 nm (AOD550) and effective radius of total size (ReffT) in regions of Gobi and JJJ, accompanied by low Angstrom Exponent (AE), and high SSA870 values, while in the regions of Korea and Japan, minor increments of AOD550 and ReffT were found. Geostationary satellite observations are essential on analyzing the effects of dust on the terrestrial and solar radiation budget. However, unified dust aerosol products for both solar and terrestrial spectra are currently under-researched. To fill this gap, two sets of algorithms were developed. Firstly, the dust aerosol retrieval algorithm at visible to near-infrared bands (DARV) was developed to estimate dust aerosol optical thickness (AOT) at 0.55 μm (τ 0.55). The performance of DARV under heavy aerosol loadings was greatly improved by using a near-infrared band and spectral sensitivity factors with Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) AOT products. Secondly, the dust aerosol retrieval algorithm at thermal-infrared bands (DART) was developed to retrieve AOT at 10.8 μm (τ 10.8) and effective radius at coarse mode (r eff) simultaneously. The DART outperforms other algorithms by (i) considering an emissivity ratio that advances the derivation of spectral surface brightness temperature, and (ii) including a spectral angle mapper that greatly constrains the retrieval uncertainties. Validation against the AERONET AOT shows a correlation coefficient (ρ), root mean square error (RMSE), and bias of 0.9, 0.26, and 0.06, respectively for the DARV algorithm at dust-dominated cases, and a ρ of 0.69 for the DART algorithm. Inter-comparisons among four officially released aerosol products and DARV AOT on five dust storm cases reveals that DARV is similar to VIIRS Deep Blue (DB) AOT with the highest ρ (ranging from 0.60 to 0.91) and lowest RMSE (ranging from 0.40 to 0.88). MODIS Deep Blue (DB) and Multi-angle Implementation of Atmospheric Correction (MAIAC) AOT are similar to each other and they are lower than the DARV and VIIRS AOT. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) AOT data are generally higher than the others. In addition, time series analysis of the three retrievals aided by the PM 2.5 , PM 10 , and wind field data verifies the trend of AOT VIR , AOT TIR and r eff for a dust storm case throughout the daytime. Dust detection from satellite images has been explored with both physical dust index method and machine learning method. However, both methods have their own limitations. The dust index method is threshold dependent and uses limited satellite observations, whilst the machine learning method requires a large quantity of training data and is generally physically uninterpretable. Besides, previous studies give definite detection results, i.e., 1 and 0 representing dust and non-dust. In actual situations, dusts could be mixed with clouds, and thin dust plumes can be regarded as a mixture of dusts and land surfaces. To tackle these problems, this study proposes a new method that integrates physical, machine learning, and analytical methods, namely Physical Index and Self-Organizing Mapping (SOM) integrated detection method (PISOM). It first uses physical indices to extract all dust-like pixels. Then the preliminary detection results were refined with a well-trained SOM model. Finally, it calculated the particle-type ratios for each dust-like pixel with an analytical method. The PISOM has been testified for dust aerosol detection over Northern China using Himawari-8 AHI satellite images. It was cross-compared with the two classical physical dust indices of brightness temperature difference (BTD) and normalized difference dust index (NDDI) on 5732 samples of heavy dust (HD), thin dust (TD), desert surface (DS), and thin cloud (TIC), which were manually extracted from historical dust storm cases. The results show that PISOM has the highest accuracy score (0.930) than the BTD (0.890) and NDDI (0.700). The confusion matrix of PISOM for the four types reveals that the PISOM misclassifies 29 and 325 samples of HD and TD as TIC. An in-depth examination reveals that these misclassified samples are mixtures of HD and TD with TIC, which indicates the effectiveness of PISOM in interpreting the mixture cases. Moreover, application on typical dust storm cases demonstrates that the PISOM performs well over different regions and under various illumination conditions. Importantly, the quantified dust detection results make the PISOM application-oriented, i.e., the results can be used to estimate dust-affected areas or quantify the probability of dust ratio over particular pixel(s). • Integrating physical index and self-organizing mapping for aerosol dust detection (PISOM) was developed. • The developed method overcomes the problem of threshold dependency in the physical index method. • The developed method can well depict mixed cases, such as dust mixed with clouds. • The dust detection algorithms are application-oriented. Abstract: This paper presents a geographic information systems (GIS) model to relate biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) isoprene emissions to ecosystem type, as well as environmental drivers such as light intensity, temperature, landscape factor and foliar density. Data and techniques have recently become available which can permit new improved estimates of isoprene emissions over Hong Kong. The techniques are based on Guenther et al.’s (1993, 1999) model. The spatially detailed mapping of isoprene emissions over Hong Kong at a resolution of 100m and a database has been constructed for retrieval of the isoprene maps from February 2007 to January 2008. This approach assigns emission rates directly to ecosystem types not to individual species, since unlike in temperate regions where one or two single species may dominate over large regions, Hong Kong''s vegetation is extremely diverse with up to 300 different species in 1ha. Field measurements of emissions by canister sampling obtained a range of ambient emissions according to different climatic conditions for Hong Kong''s main ecosystem types in both urban and rural areas, and these were used for model validation. Results show the model-derived isoprene flux to have high to moderate correlations with field observations (i.e. r 2 =0.77, r 2 =0.63, r 2 =0.37 for all 24 field measurements, subset for summer, and winter data, respectively) which indicate the robustness of the approach when applied to tropical forests at detailed level, as well as the promising role of remote sensing in isoprene mapping. The GIS model and raster database provide a simple and low cost estimation of the BVOC isoprene in Hong Kong at detailed level. City planners and environmental authorities may use the derived models for estimating isoprene transportation, and its interaction with anthropogenic pollutants in urban areas. Hong Kong is one of the world's mountainous international cities, and landslides are a constant threat to human life and property. Monitoring landslides in Hong Kong is important and this is always done by field surveying. However, although conventional survey techniques provide accurate landslide information, they are limited to small areas and physical contact with the slope may be dangerous. Remote sensing techniques can provide an alternative for collecting information about landslide causes and occurrences, and they may assist in the prediction of future landslide occurrences. This article demonstrates the use of monoscopic and stereoscopic aerial photographs, along with satellite images from the IKONOS very high resolution (VHR) sensor for detailed landslide hazard assessment over Hong Kong. For monoscopic aerial photographs, a fusion technique for generating pseudo true colour images from false colour aerial photographs was demonstrated. The pseudo true colour image is useful for better visual analysis in the photogrammetric model. For monoscopic IKONOS image, a set of image fusion techniques was applied in order to improve landslide interpretation, and the results were examined visually and statistically. The Pan-sharpening method among all the image fusion techniques has been demonstrated to have superior performance for identifying both landslide trails and crowns. Stereoscopic viewing using a stereoscopic pair of aerial photographs and stereoscopic IKONOS images was employed for more detailed landslide investigation such as landscape positional relationships (e.g. streams and ridges). Digital elevation models (DEM) were generated from aerial photographs and IKONOS stereoscopic images, and they were compared with digital contour data with 2 m contour interval. The DEMs generated from digital photogrammetric model and IKONOS stereoscopic images are consistently more accurate than an existing DEM, and are sensitive to micro-scale terrain features. The Hong Kong Civil Engineering Department may use the derived monoscopic fused images, stereoscopic images, DEM and anaglyph as objective measures for a detailed landslide study within Hong Kong. Abstract: The contribution of Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds (BVOCs) to local air quality modelling is often ignored due to the difficulty of obtaining accurate spatial estimates of emissions. Yet their role in the formation of secondary aerosols and photochemical smog is thought to be significant, especially in hot tropical cities such as Hong Kong, which are situated downwind from dense forests. Journal of Geophysical Research 100, 8873–8892] global model of BVOC emissions, for application at a spatially detailed level to Hong Kong’s tropical forested landscape using high resolution remote sensing and ground data. The emission estimates are based on a landscape approach which assigns emission rates directly to ecosystem types not to individual species, since unlike in temperate regions where one or two single species may dominate over large regions, Hong Kong’s vegetation is extremely diverse with up to 300 different species in one hectare. The resulting BVOC emission maps are suitable for direct input to regional and local air quality models giving 10m raster output on an hourly basis over the whole of the Hong Kong territory, an area of 1100km2. Due to the spatially detailed mapping of isoprene emissions over the study area, it was possible to validate the model output using field data collected at a precise time and place by replicating those conditions in the model. The field measurement of emissions used for validating the model was based on a canister sampling technique, undertaken under different climatic conditions for Hong Kong’s main ecosystem types in both urban and rural areas. The model-derived BVOC flux distributions appeared to be consistent with the field observations, indicating the robustness of the landscape modelling approach when applied to tropical forests at detailed level, as well as the promising role of remote sensing in BVOC mapping. Observations from the AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET) sunphotometers, MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite images, back-trajectory modelling and 'in-situ' PM10 measurements in Hong Kong confirmed that two dust storms on 16-17 April 2006 and 27-30 April 2009, with source areas in northwest China, affected the city. The impacts of the dust on the air quality of Hong Kong were quantified using aerosol optical properties from AERONET data and local PM10 (particle size less than 10 μm) concentrations. Combined analysis of back trajectories and the microphysical properties of the dust aerosols from AERONET inversion data suggest that the dust particulates are sometimes associated with industrial chemicals on arrival in Hong Kong. Satellite remote sensing has been extensively utilized for monitoring dust storms in space and time. Dust storm detection using satellite observations is important to analyze the dust storm trajectories and sources. This paper reviews the algorithms for dust storm detection used in multispectral satellite sensors, spanning visible to thermal wavelengths. Four categories of dust detection algorithms are summarized, namely, dust spectral index algorithms, temporal anomalous detection algorithms, spatial coherence tested algorithms (physical-based algorithms) and machine learning-based algorithms. Following discussions of dust storm detection algorithms, the dust presence validation methods are also reviewed. Future developments for dust storm detection are focused upon three aspects: detection of dust storms at nighttime; development of more efficient machine learning methods for retrieval; and integrating physical and machine learning methods for satellite images. • Reviewing of algorithms for dust storm detection for multispectral sensors • Physical-based algorithms and Machine-learning algorithms for dust storm detection are summarized. • Commonly used dust detection validation methods are discussed. • Limitations of current algorithms are pointed out and future developments of dust detection algorithms are suggested. Spatio-temporal data fusion refers to the technique of combining high temporal resolution from coarse satellite images and high spatial resolution from fine satellite images. However, data availability remains a major limitation in algorithm development. Existing spatio-temporal data fusion algorithms require at least one known image pair between the fine and coarse resolution image. However, data which come from two different satellite platforms do not necessarily have an overlap in their overpass times, hence restricting the application of spatio-temporal data fusion. In this paper, a new algorithm named Hopfield Neural Network SPatio-tempOral daTa fusion model (HNN-SPOT) is developed by utilizing the optimization concept in the Hopfield neural network (HNN) for spatio-temporal image fusion. The algorithm derives a synthesized fine resolution image from a coarse spatial resolution satellite image (similar to downscaling), with the use of one fine resolution image taken on an arbitrary date and one coarse image taken on a predicted date. The HNN-SPOT particularly addresses the problem when the fine resolution and coarse resolution images are acquired from different satellite overpass times over the same geographic extent. Both simulated datasets and real datasets over Hong Kong and Australia have been used in the evaluation of HNN-SPOT. Results showed that HNN-SPOT was comparable with an existing fusion algorithm, the spatial and temporal adaptive reflectance fusion model (STARFM). HNN-SPOT assumes consistent spatial structure for the target area between the date of data acquisition and the prediction date. Therefore, it is more applicable to geographical areas with little or no land cover change. It is shown that HNN-SPOT can produce accurate fusion results with >90% of correlation coefficient over consistent land covers. For areas that have undergone land cover changes, HNN-SPOT can still produce a prediction about the outlines and the tone of the features, if they are large enough to be recorded in the coarse resolution image at the prediction date. HNN-SPOT provides a relatively new approach in spatio-temporal data fusion, and further improvements can be made by modifying or adding new goals and constraints in its HNN architecture. Owing to its lower demand for data prerequisites, HNN-SPOT is expected to increase the applicability of fine-scale applications in remote sensing, such as environmental modeling and monitoring. Anthropogenic activities in coastal regions are endangering marine ecosystems. Coastal waters classified as case-II waters are especially complex due to the presence of different constituents. Recent advances in remote sensing technology have enabled to capture the spatiotemporal variability of the constituents in coastal waters. The present study evaluates the potential of remote sensing using machine learning techniques, for improving water quality estimation over the coastal waters of Hong Kong. Concentrations of suspended solids (SS), chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), and turbidity were estimated with several machine learning techniques including Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Random Forest (RF), Cubist regression (CB), and Support Vector Regression (SVR). Landsat (5,7,8) reflectance data were compared with in situ reflectance data to evaluate the performance of machine learning models. The highest accuracies of the water quality indicators were achieved by ANN for both, in situ reflectance data (89%-Chl-a, 93%-SS, and 82%-turbidity) and satellite data (91%-Chl-a, 92%-SS, and 85%-turbidity. The water quality parameters retrieved by the ANN model was further compared to those retrieved by "standard Case-2 Regional/Coast Colour" (C2RCC) processing chain model C2RCC-Nets. The root mean square errors (RMSEs) for estimating SS and Chl-a were 3.3 mg/L and 2.7 µg/L, respectively, using ANN, whereas RMSEs were 12.7 mg/L and 12.9 µg/L for suspended particulate matter (SPM) and Chl-a concentrations, respectively, when C2RCC was applied on Landsat-8 data. Relative variable importance was also conducted to investigate the consistency between in situ reflectance data and satellite data, and results show that both datasets are similar. The red band (wavelength ≈ 0.665 µm) and the product of red and green band (wavelength ≈ 0.560 µm) were influential inputs in both reflectance data sets for estimating SS and turbidity, and the ratio between red and blue band (wavelength ≈ 0.490 µm) as well as the ratio between infrared (wavelength ≈ 0.865 µm) and blue band and green band proved to be more useful for the estimation of Chl-a concentration, due to their sensitivity to high turbidity in the coastal waters. The results indicate that the NN based machine learning approaches perform better and, thus, can be used for improved water quality monitoring with satellite data in optically complex coastal waters. Harmonization of satellite imagery provides a good opportunity for studying land surface temperature (LST) as well as the urban heat island effect. However, it is challenging to use the harmonized data for the study of LST due to the systematic bias between the LSTs from different satellites, which is highly influenced by sensor differences and the compatibility of LST retrieval algorithms. To fill this research gap, this study proposes the comparison of different LST images retrieved from various satellites that focus on Hong Kong, China, by applying diverse retrieval algorithms. LST images generated from Landsat-8 using the mono-window algorithm (MWAL8) and split-window algorithm (SWAL8) would be compared with the LST estimations from Sentinel-3 SLSTR and Himawari-8 using the split-window algorithm (SWAS3 and SWAH8). Intercomparison will also be performed through segregated groups of different land use classes both during the daytime and nighttime. Results indicate that there is a significant difference among the quantitative distribution of the LST data generated from these three satellites, with average bias of up to −1.80 K when SWAH8 was compared with MWAL8, despite having similar spatial patterns of the LST images. The findings also suggest that retrieval algorithms and the dominant land use class in the study area would affect the accuracy of image-fusion techniques. The results from the day and nighttime comparisons revealed that there is a significant difference between day and nighttime LSTs, with nighttime LSTs from different satellite sensors more consistent than the daytime LSTs. This emphasizes the need to incorporate as much night-time LST data as available when predicting or optimizing fine-scale LSTs in the nighttime, so as to minimize the bias. The framework designed by this study will serve as a guideline towards efficient spatial optimization and harmonized use of LSTs when utilizing different satellite images associated with an array of land covers and at different times of the day. Abstract: This study investigates and demonstrates the state of the art in remote sensing techniques for detailed landslide hazard assessment applicable to large areas. Since the most common methods of landslide hazard assessment using simple inventories and weighted overlays are heavily dependent on three-dimensional terrain visualization and analysis, stereo satellite images from the IKONOS Very High Resolution (VHR) sensor are used for this study. The DEMs created from IKONOS stereo images appear to be much more accurate and sensitive to micro-scale terrain features than a DEM created from digital contour data with a 2 m contour interval. Pan-sharpened stereo IKONOS images permit interpretation of recent landslides as small as 2–3 m in width as well as relict landslides older than 50 years. A cost–benefit analysis comparing stereo air photo interpretation with stereo satellite image interpretation suggests that stereo satellite imagery is usually more cost-effective for detailed landslide hazard assessment over large areas. Abstract: This study demonstrates that thermal satellite images combined with ‘in situ’ ground data can be used to examine models of heat island genesis and thus identify the main causes of urban heat islands (UHIs). The models, although proposed over 30years ago, have not been thoroughly evaluated due to a combination of inadequate ground data and the low resolution of thermal satellite data. Also there has been limited understanding of the relevance of satellite-derived surface temperatures to local and regional scale air temperatures. A cloud-free ASTER thermal image of urban and rural areas of Hong Kong was obtained on a winter night with a well-developed heat island, accompanied by a 148km vehicle traverse of air temperatures. Over the whole traverse a high R 2 of 0.80 was observed between surface and air temperatures, with the two datasets showing a similar amplitude and general trend, but with the surface exhibiting much higher local variability than air temperature. Gradients in both surface and air temperature could be related to differences in land cover, with little evidence of large scale advection, thus supporting the population/physical structure model of UHI causation, rather than the advection model. However, the much higher surface and air temperatures observed over the largest urban area, Kowloon, than over any smaller urban centre with similar physical structure in the New Territories, would seem more indicative of the advection model. The image and ground data suggest that Kowloon''s urban canopy layer climate is mainly influenced by local city structure, but it is also modified by a strongly developed, regional scale urban boundary layer which has developed over the largest urban centre of Kowloon, and reinforces heating from both above and below.
