As the demand for low-carbon and eco-friendly energy is increasing and the use of wearable devices is soaring, the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), which can economically harvest energy, is in the spotlight. Among many materials, paper is considered a promising substrate and frame material for self-powered TENG due to its high accessibility, flexibility, and biocompatibility. Here, we present a new structure of foldable paper based TENG (FP-TENG) composed of paper and PTFE/Si-rubber. The double-folded FP-TENG generates voltages and currents of 153 V and 2.2 µA, respectively, and shows excellent durability without signal degradation under 5,000 cycles of external force. A watch strap was manufactured with FP-TENG and integrated with an electronic watch pannel to supply power, and several LEDs were turned on. Therefore, FP-TENG is expected to be utilized as a promising eco-friendly energy source for small electronic devices.

Power generation from renewable sources is important for sustainable development due to the depletion of traditional fossil fuels and related environmental pollution. In this work, paper is used to generate electricity under moisture ingress. As a result, a piece of untreated print paper (1.5 cm2 in area) can induce a voltage of 0.25 V and a current of 15 nA. The power output can be conveniently tuned by changing the humidity, temperature and number of devices by simple series/parallel connections. Such paper-based moist-electric generators (PMEGs) are expected to find their applications in the daily ambient environment owing to the wide availability and low cost of paper materials. A ‘power’ book is then fabricated to prove the concept, providing new insights into moist-electric power generation and a viable approach for designing extremely simple power generators for various applications.

Renewable energy systems continue to be one of the fastest growing segments of the energy industry. This paper focuses on the understanding of how photovoltaic (PV) technology behaves under dc arc conditions. Emphasis is placed on the electrical safety aspect of DC arc flash incident energy evaluation. Because of the fast proliferation of PV systems and the lack of formal equivalent calculation guidelines such as IEEE 1584 for AC systems, it has been necessary to rely on different equations and models presented by various researchers over the last few years. This paper discusses the behavior of PV systems under arc conditions and presents the results of available methods to estimate the dc arc flash incident energy. This paper provides a comparative analysis of a proposed arc-flash incident energy calculation method against different laboratory tests including those performed for this paper at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Detailed explanations are provided regarding the effect of PV module I-V and P-V curves under arcing conditions. Examples of the application of the proposed calculation method to the test measurements are included.

Focus is now on the solar energy above other energies sources such as wind energy. This paper will explore the potential of wind energy in Algeria and go through the challenge facing it development. Some recommendations aiming to develop and implement the wind energy are provided.

Anaerobic digestion is a well-established biological process for converting biomass in waste streams into a renewable energy source, and it also contributes to the treatment of these waste streams. In this introductory mini-review, some fundamental aspects of anaerobic digestion for use in the pulp and paper industry and other sectors are briefly summarized. The contents include the basics of anaerobic digestion, feedstocks, key process parameters, and typical anaerobic digesters/reactors and their representative manufactures. Fostering the more efficient and widespread commercial use of anaerobic digestion technologies would be a critical strategy to address the issues of energy, the environment, and sustainability.

The waste biomass has immense opportunities and plenty of potentials to be an efficient source of renewable energy. Initially, native unripe coconut husk (NCH) was used as raw material for fluidized bed gasification. Then NCH was treated with paper and pulp waste water to impregnate metals present in it for getting enhanced H2 yield in fuel gas. Humidified air was used as gasifying medium, which served the purpose of introducing water vapour to take part in the gasification process. Then after, gasification medium was retrofitted with CO2, which enhanced both the higher heating value (HHV), and CO and H2 content in the fuel gas. This research serves the dual benefit of energy generation and waste minimization. HHV of unripe coconut husk was investigated and found to be 20.95 MJ/kg. H2 yield and HHV from impregnated coconut husk (ICH) were obtained as 55.55 vol % and 5.24 MJ/Nm3, respectively at HER 0.1 and gasification temperature of 850 °C in case of fluidized bed gasification. The GC-MS analysis of fuel oil obtained from ICH gasification was done to get the information about high yield of fuel gas as promise product of fluidized bed gasification.

In this paper, there is an outlook of various power generation techniques adopted, and the amount of the power with the help of various means are highlighted and put for the immediate comparison. It is also discussed that a brief outlook of power generation and their comparison show the significance of the geographical, climatic and political situations emphasis on the methods of their power generations, respectively. In different countries, the nature of electrical power generation has shown with graphical form on the account of percentage utilization of energies in recent year. Various power generation methods like thermal, wind, solar, gas, nuclear, hydro electricity, other renewable energy sources, etc., are discussed in details. A detailed comparison of cost of generated power and cost of a single unit per person according to the respective country has been discussed. By knowing this, it may be analyzed that different sources of power generation can be compared with the power generated in India. With the help of this, analysis and comparing to the utilization of different types of sources for the purpose of generation of electricity by different countries can be understood including source for production of electricity as compared to renewable source of energy.

Renewable or recycled materials have been widely used in the construction industry to achieve a sustainable target. As a kind of short cellulose fibre, a massive amount of waste paper fibre was generated annually from the industrial and construction sectors. However, the research on the use of waste paper fibres in construction/building materials is limited. The feasibility and sustainability of papercrete used as a building material were investigated based on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method by analysing its characteristics compared to four production scenarios. LCA results demonstrate waste paper fibres used as the cement substitute in concrete benefit to reduce the environmental impact compared to traditional disposal.

A series of bio-based additives derived from citric acid as a renewable chemical source were synthesised. The chemical composition and purity of 1–4 were confirmed by the combination of NMR, FTIR and MS. The thermal behaviour, stability and degradation pattern of the compounds 1–4 were investigated by TGA and DSC methods. PVC based formulations with compounds 1–4 were prepared through a simple mixing method. The formulations were treated at different temperatures (130–210 °C) to investigate the potential of these materials in industrial curing settings. L*a*b* data were used to monitor and to assess a colour change in the coated paper samples; this showed a correlation with degradation data of the pure compounds 1–4. SEM analysis of the final paper samples indicated that the compounds 1–4 show gas formation within the cellular structure; however compounds 3 and 4 result in a glossy smooth surface. This study showed that the compounds 3 and 4 exhibit promising properties in PVC formulations for application in industrial settings.

The multifaceted hydrolytic enzyme xylanase has been found to play a pivotal role in the energy and green technology sectors. Extensive research is being carried out with the aim to produce xylanases that would fulfill industrial parameters, in the paper and pulp and fuel industries. Cellulase-free xylanase with good thermal stability finds promising use for biobleaching in paper manufacturing. In current scenario, it has been found that renewable energy is a burgeoning area, where xylanase finds a major role. Xylanase is synergistically involved with other cooperating enzymes for the deconstruction of lignocellulosic raw material, which ultimately paves way for the production of fuel ethanol. In other words, efficient utilization of lignocellulosic raw materials will positively boost the economics of alternate fuel industry.

Under the dual pressure of energy consumption and environmental pollution, mankind hopes to develop clean and renewable alternative energy, and the rapid development of fuel cells meets people's demand for energy-efficient power systems. The emergence of portable micro energy systems represented by microfluidic fuel cells, such as paper-based microfluidic fuel cells, has greatly enriched the means of medical detection to better cope with the threat of disease transmission. In this work, the numerical simulation method is innovatively introduced to study the paper-based microfluidic fuel cells. Both transient and steady-state modes are employed to demonstrate the whole operation process of the paper-based microfluidic fuel cell. In addition, the different structural parameters, including electrode spacing, the distance between electrode and inlet, channel thickness, and electrode length, are also investigated their influence mechanisms on cell performance. Results show that the increase of most structural parameters decreases cell output power in different degrees. Even on the premise that increasing channel thickness has a positive impact on the output power, the fuel utilization still shows a downward trend. These conclusions provide theoretical support and reference for future optimization work and accelerate the development of microfluidic fuel cells.

Large material usage and high production cost restrict the widespread use of solar cells in our society as a clean energy source. A feasible way toward inexpensive solar cells is root in our ability to fabricate solar cells on cheap substrates as the substrate represents 25%–60% of total material costs in current solar cells. Recent efforts to develop solar cells on low cost, flexible, renewable, biodegradable, and versatile paper have rendered encouraging and intriguing results. Paper can not only be taken as a promising substrate to support various solar cells, but also can act as functional elements such as light management layer to improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of solar cells. The following sections summarize up-to-date progress on the solar cells fabricated on both common and emerging paper substrates and identify the major challenges for paper solar cells that need to be overcome before they can move from the laboratory to industry. Among these reports, a highest 6.7% PCE to date for solar cells on common paper is reported. Paper solar cells demonstrated their potential application in low-cost and disposable paper electronics as a power source. Possible applications include gadgets, product tracking, smart parcels, security identification, and copy protect.

The global cement industry produces over four billion tonnes annually. In recent years, the quest for increasing energy efficiency has led this industry to test and use “waste” materials as alternative fuels (AF). The objective of this study was to examine the use, as alternative fuel, of the shredded non-recycled plastics and paper residue (NRPP) of a materials recovery facility at the Balcones plant in San Antonio, Texas; this material has a Lower Heating Value (LHV) of about 17 MJ/kg and is called “engineered fuel” (EF). The results showed that EF consists of mostly paper fiber, a biogenic material, so its use helps to decrease CO2 emissions from cement production. In the US, on an average about 4.3 MJ of thermal energy are used to dry, decompose, and sinter the carbonate minerals to produce one kg of “clinker” that is then ground to cement powder and mixed with other compounds. If the maximum amount of EF that can be used by the U.S. cement industry (83 million tonnes of cement per year) were to be separated at Material Recovery Facilities and used as alternative fuel in cement kilns, the diversion of non-recycled paper and plastics from landfills would amount to 17.7 million tonnes of EF. The general methodology used for the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is Eco-indicators 99 that uses the SimaPro database and four scenarios were assessed. The corresponding chemical structure of the EF was calculated and the associated emissions during combustion were determined. The laboratory analyses determined the average makeup of the sampled fuels consisted of 20% fossil based carbon and 80% biogenic. The use of EF in the cement industry reduces greenhouse gas emission by up to 3 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of EF used in place of a high-quality coal. The study also found that use of EF in cement production has no adverse effect on the stack emissions of cement plants, nor on the quality of cement produced. The mercury concentration in the stack gas of U.S. cement kilns is well below the U.S. standard and the total dioxin emissions of all cement plants amount to only 0.05% of the dioxins emitted by all U.S. sources. Furthermore, the cement process incorporates the residual ash in the EF into the final clinker, thus resulting in both energy and materials recovery.

in Undetermined In this paper, the prospect of integrating a combined paper&pulp mill with fuel production via biomass gasification was investigated. In the study, three different types of gasifiers (circulating fluidised bed, entrained flow and indirect gasification) and three fuel processes (dimethyl ether, methanol and Fischer-Tropsch wax synthesis) were investigated using computer simulations. The paper reports differences from the stand-alone cases and the integrated cases, using the electricity equivalence efficiency as a measure. Only 6 out of the 18 integrated cases studied displayed a positive result from integration and no obvious fuel selection that stand out as the most beneficial one, however the synthesis of dimethyl ether is, in combination with all gasifiers assessed a rather good choice, with an change in efficiency from integration ranging from −1% to 4%. Dimethyl ether is not the best choice if the electrical equivalence is to be maximised however. In this case the combination of circulating fluidised bed gasification and methanol synthesis should be pursued. The production of Fischer-Tropsch wax should according to the chosen measure not be produced; however there is an added value in the production of a non-oxygenated fuel which has not been taken into account in this particular study. All cases leads to a reduction of 0.4–0.9 kg CO2 per kg of dry biomass used in the process for fuel synthesis and the possibility to export bark is a more significant factor in this respect than which type of fuel is synthesised.
