The transition from traditional to renewable energy sources is a critical issue in current energy-generation systems, which aims to address climate change and the increased demand for energy. This shift, however, imposes additional burdens on control systems to maintain power system stability and quality within predefined limits. Addressing these challenges, this paper proposes an innovative Modified Hybrid Fractional-Order (MHFO) automatic voltage regulator (AVR) equipped with a fractional-order tilt integral and proportional derivative with a filter plus a second-order derivative with a filter FOTI-PDND2N2 controller. This advanced controller combines the benefits of a (FOTI) controller, known for enhancing dynamic performance and steady-state response, with a (PDND2N2) controller to improve system robustness and adaptability. The proposed MHFO controller stands out with its nine tunable parameters, providing more extensive control options than the conventional three-parameter PID controller and the five-parameter FOPID controller. Furthermore, a recent optimization approach using a growth optimizer (GO) has been formulated and applied to optimally adjust the MHFO controller's parameters simultaneously. The performance of the proposed AVR based on the MHFO-GO controller is scrutinized by contrasting it with various established and developed optimization algorithms. The comparative study shows that the AVR based on the MHFO-GO controller surpasses other AVR controllers from the stability, robustness, and dynamic response speed points of view. Having continuous decrease in inertia and being sensitive to load/generation variation are considered crucial challenging problems for modern power grids. The main cause of these problems is the increased penetration capacities of renewables. An unbalanced load with generation power largely affects grids' frequency and voltage profiles. Load frequency control (LFC) mechanisms are extensively presented to solve these problems. In the literature, LFC methods are still lacking in dealing with system uncertainty, parameter variation, structure changes, and/or disturbance rejection. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved LFC methodology using the hybrid one plus proportional integral double-integral derivative (1+PII2D) cascaded with fractional order proportional-integral-derivative (FOPID), namely, the proposed 1+PII2D/FOPID controller. The contribution of superconducting magnetic energy storage devices (SMES) is considered in the proposed design, also considering hybrid high-voltage DC and AC transmission lines (hybrid HVDC/HVAC). An optimized design of proposed 1+PII2D/FOPID controller is proposed using a new application of the recently presented powerful artificial rabbits optimizers (ARO) algorithm. Various performance comparisons, system changes, parameter uncertainties, and load/generation profiles and changes are considered in the proposed case study. Recent developments in electrical power grids have witnessed high utilization levels of renewable energy sources (RESs) and increased trends that benefit the batteries of electric vehicles (EVs). However, modern electrical power grids cause increased concerns due to their continuously reduced inertia resulting from RES characteristics. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved fractional-order frequency controller with a design optimization methodology. The proposed controller is represented by two cascaded control loops using the one-plus-proportional derivative (1 + PD) in the outer loop and a fractional-order proportional integral derivative (FOPID) in the inner loop, which form the proposed improved 1 + PD/FOPID. The main superior performance characteristics of the proposed 1 + PD/FOPID fractional-order frequency controller over existing methods include a faster response time with minimized overshoot/undershoot peaks, an ability for mitigating both high- and low-frequency disturbances, and coordination of EV participation in regulating electrical power grid frequency. Moreover, simultaneous determination of the proposed fractional-order frequency controller parameters is proposed using the recent manta ray foraging optimization (MRFO) algorithm. Performance comparisons of the proposed 1 + PD/FOPID fractional-order frequency controller with existing PID, FOPID, and PD/FOPID controllers are presented in the paper. Renewable energy systems (RESs) have introduced themselves as vital solutions for energy supply in remote regions, wherein main utility supply systems are not available. The construction of microgrid (MG) systems is useful candidate for proper control and management with hybrid RESs. However, RESs-based MGs face reduced power system inertia due to the dependency of RESs on power electronic converter systems. Accordingly, preserving nominal operating frequency and reduced deviations in tie-line power are crucial elements for proper operation of interconnected MGs in remote areas. To overcome this problem, load frequency control (LFC) systems have proven featured solutions. Therefore, this paper proposes a new non-integer LFC method based on the fractional order (FO) control theory for LFC in interconnected MGs in remote areas. The proposed control is based on the three degree of freedom (3DoF) cascaded 1+proportional-integral-derivative-accelerated (PIDA) controller with FOPI controller, namely 3DoF 1+PIDA/FOPI LFC scheme. The proposed 3DoF 1+PIDA/FOPItakes the advantages of the accelerated term of PIDA control to improve power system transients, regarding maximum overshoot/undershoot and settling times. Additionally, it employs outer loop to reduce errors and faster inner loop to mitigate disturbances effects. The contribution of plug-in controlled electric vehicles (EVs) are considered to enhance the frequency regulation functions. An optimized design of the proposed 3DoF 1+PIDA/FOPI LFC scheme is proposed using the newly developed hybrid equilibrium optimizer (EO)-slime mould optimization (SMA) algorithm (namely EOSMA optimizer). The EOSMA combines the features of the EO and SMA powerful optimization algorithms. A two interconnected MGs in remote areas with RESs and EVs inclusions with high penetration levels is selected to verify the proposed 3DoF 1+PIDA/FOPI LFC scheme and the EOSMA optimizer. The results show high ability of the proposed controller and design scheme to minimize MGs' frequency and tie-line power fluctuations and to preserve frequency stability and security. Reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases has directed energy sectors toward using renewable energy sources (RESs) and decreasing the dependency on conventional energy sources. Recently, developing efficient load frequency control (LFC) schemes has become essential to face the reduced inertia due to RESs installations. This paper presents a modified tilt fractional order (FO) integral–tilt FO derivative with a fractional filter (TFOI-TFODFF or namely TI λ -TD μ FF) LFC method. Although the proposed controller uses the same elements of standard controllers, it adopts FO control capabilities and flexibilities, including the tilt, FO integral, FO derivative, and FO filter. Thence, a new control structure is obtained, merging the advantages of both controllers. Moreover, the proposed TFOI-TFODFF controller employs two control loops to be able to mitigate low-frequency as well as high-frequency disturbances in power grids. Additionally, a new modified marine predator algorithm (MMPA) is proposed for optimally tuning the parameters of the proposed TFOI-TFODFF LFC method. The performance of the MMPA is enhanced in terms of initialization and exploitation phases using the chaotic maps and weighting factor. A two-area interconnected power system case study is implemented with wind and photovoltaic RESs and electric vehicles (EVs) contribution. The proposed TFOI-TFODFF LFC is compared with the FOPID, TID, TI-DF, and FOTPID controllers, wherein the proposed TFOI-TFODFF has offered superior performance of the proposed controller. Moreover, the proposed modified MPA is compared with the original MPA and other competitive optimization algorithms, and statistical analyses are carried out through parametric and nonparametric tests. The recent environmental crisis and global warming have compelled an energy transition, particularly in the power generation and transportation sectors. Increased energy competence and production will necessitate enormous efforts. Admittedly, power system inertia metrics have revealed reduced inertia attributes, which could lead to a catastrophic shutdown and security issues in future electrical power systems. The design of the load frequency controller is essential for improving frequency regulation and power system stability. Nonetheless, more research is needed into control development and design approaches that take into account renewable energy characteristics, complexities, connected electric vehicles (EVs), and uncertainties. Metaheuristic‐based design methods and fractional order control have recently demonstrated an improved response when compared to classical design methods and integer‐order controllers. This work presents an improved fractional order hybrid control system based on two modified versions of the Manta Ray Foraging Optimization (MRFO) Algorithm. The exploration and exploitation stages of the modified MRFO are enhanced by utilizing a chaotic map and a weighting factor. The transients and steady‐state performance of the studied two‐areas interconnected microgrids have been significantly improved by incorporating the advantages of both the suggested fractional order‐based control approach and the proposed modified MRFO algorithms. While assessing the feasibility of the developed controller and modified optimizers, uncertainty, renewable energy fluctuations, load transients, and electric vehicle attributes are all properly considered. The modified MRFO's performances are evaluated using 23 benchmark functions, and the results are compared to the original MRFO and recent well‐known optimization algorithms. Modern structures of electrical power systems are expected to have more domination of renewable energy sources. However, renewable energy-based generation systems suffer from their lack of or reduced rotating masses, which is the main source of power system inertia. Therefore, the frequency of modern power systems represents an important indicator of their proper and safe operation. In addition, the uncertainties and randomness of the renewable energy sources and the load variations can result in frequency undulation problems. In this context, this paper presents an improved cascaded fractional order-based frequency regulation controller for a two-area interconnected power system. The proposed controller uses the cascade structure of the tilt integral derivative (TID) with the fractional order proportional integral derivative with a filter (FOPIDN or PI λ D μ N) controller (namely the cascaded TID-FOPIDN or TID-PI λ D μ N controller). Moreover, an optimized TID control method is presented for the electric vehicles (EVs) to maximize their benefits and contribution to the frequency regulation of power systems. The recent widely employed marine predators optimization algorithm (MPA) is utilized to design the new proposed controllers. The proposed controller and design method are tested and validated at various load and renewable source variations, as is their robustness against parameter uncertainties of power systems. Performance comparisons of the proposed controller with featured frequency regulation controllers in the literature are provided to verify the superiority of the new proposed controller. The obtained results confirm the stable operation and the frequency regulation performance of the new proposed controller with optimized controller parameters and without the need for complex design methods. Recent advancements in renewable generation resources and their vast implementation in power sectors have posed serious challenges regarding their operation, protection, and control. Maintaining operating frequency at its nominal value and reducing tie-line power deviations represent crucial factors for these advancements due to continuous reduction of power system inertia. In this paper, a new modified load frequency controller (LFC) method is proposed based on fractional calculus combinations. The tilt fractional-order integral-derivative with fractional-filter (TFOIDFF) is proposed in this paper for LFC applications. The proposed TFOIDFF controller combines the benefits of tilt, FOPID, and fractional filter regulators. Furthermore, a new application is introduced based on the recently presented artificial hummingbird optimizer algorithm (AHA) for simultaneous optimization of the proposed TFOIDFF parameters in the studied two-area power grids. The contribution of electric vehicle (EVs) is considered in the centralized control strategy using the proposed TFOIDFF controller. The performance of the proposed TFOIDFF controller has been compared with the existing tilt with filter, PID with filter, FOPID with filter and hybrid fractional-order with filter LFCs from the literature. Moreover, the AHA optimizer results are compared with the featured LFC optimization algorithms in the literature. The proposed TFOIDFF and AHA optimizer are validated against renewable energy fluctuations, load stepping, generation/loading uncertainty, and power-grid parameter uncertainty. The AHA optimizer is compared with the widely-used optimizers in the literature, including the PSO, ABC, BOA, and AEO optimizers at the IAE, ISE, ITAE, and ITSE objectives. For instance, the proposed AHA method has a minimized IAE after 34 iterations of 0.03178 compared to 0.03896 with PSO, 0.04548 with AEO, 0.04812 with BOA, and 0.05483 with ABC optimizer. The low inertia of electrical power networks as renewable energy penetration levels increase is regarded as a significant issue confronting worldwide ambitions for the anticipated renewable energy transition. Load frequency control (LFC) is an efficient way of improving the frequency stability and dependability of renewable energy-based power networks. Therefore, this paper introduces a novel three-degree-of-freedom (3 DoF) load frequency control method for two-area-linked power systems. To implement the suggested LFC approach, the proposed control employs an enhanced hybrid fractional order control method (namely FOTPID), and the tilt integrator differentiator with filter (TIDF) is employed in the frequency deviation and tie-line power loop feedforward compensation. As a consequence, this study proposes a novel 3DoF cascaded FOTPID-TIDF controller. Furthermore, this work proposes a modified method of the recently developed Manta-Ray Foraging Optimizer (MRFO) to optimize the parameters of the new suggested 3DoF cascaded FOTPID-TIDF controller. The paper includes extensive performance comparisons and discussions to validate the superior performance metrics of the new proposed control and optimization methods. The results reveal that by taking into account the characteristics and uncertainties of renewable sources, interconnected loads, and grid inertia, the results perfectly mitigate various existing deviations in frequency and tie-line power compared to existing contemporary LFC approaches. This paper presents a design and an implementation of a generalized adaptive multi-objectives Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) algorithm for multilevel inverters (MLIs). SVPWM is considered as an influential and resilient tool for optimizing the performance of MLIs. Innumerable objectives can be attained by the proper selection of switching times and states. The performance of MLIs can be improved, as well. Hitherto, achieving multiple objectives could be a challenging mission in the SVPWM algorithms scheming. In this paper, an objective function has been demarcated based on the weighted sum of the desired performance parameters. Then, considering this chosen objective function, the proposed algorithm nominates the optimum switching sequence from valid switching sequences. With this algorithm, the objective function can be weighted for the sake of reaching different performance parameter combinations; to outfit different applications and operating points. Furthermore, different SVPWM design cases for enhancing the operation of MLIs can be accomplished. Voltage balance over the DC-link capacitors in MLIs has been implemented, as a study case, using the proposed SVPWM. Both simulation and experimental platforms have been utilized. The results visibly illustrate the generality of the proposed algorithm, and it can improve different performance limitations of MLI such as; achieving a fast balance of the capacitors voltages with reduced power losses. The selected case study has achieved 21.62% faster voltage balance with 17.61% reduction in the power losses compared to conventional SVPWM method. Notwithstanding its straightforwardness to be implemented without complex calculations, the proposed algorithm can maintain the high operating efficiency of the MLI system for a wide range of operation. As promising and suitable candidates for high-power applications, multilevel inverters have become one of the most promising solutions in various applications. However, power switching devices are highly subjected to thermal overheating, which leads to shortened lifetime and reduced reliability. Thermal overheating may result from the degradation of power switching devices due to continuous overloading and power cycling. In addition, degradation and faults in the cooling system of power switching devices may cause thermal stresses as well. A new overheating-tolerant space vector modulation algorithm is proposed in this paper to alleviate thermal stresses from overheated power switching device. The proposed algorithm relies on using the redundancy property between switching states in multilevel inverters to continuously evaluate a cost function of the junction temperature of the overheated device for all possible switching sequence sets and then selects the optimal switching sequence. In addition, the proposed algorithm preserves the DC-link capacitor voltage without reduction in the output current of the inverter. The proposed algorithm is general, which can be applied to n-level inverters. Both simulation and experimental results reveal the efficient performance of the proposed algorithm using a three-level T-type inverter as a case study. The integration of photovoltaic (PV) systems with three-phase four-wire (3P4W) distribution networks has imposed several challenges related to existing unbalanced loads, reactive power generation and harmonics content. In this paper, a multifunctional distributed maximum power point (MPPT) controller for grid integration of PV systems is proposed. The proposed distributed MPPT controller is developed based on employing a four-leg three-level T-type multilevel inverter. The proposed inverter performs multifunctionalities, including distributed MPPT, neutral current compensation for the unbalanced loads, supplying reactive power into the grid and the grid integration. Moreover, the proposed inverter overcomes the stochastic behavior of both the PV generation with partial shading problems and its operation with unbalanced loads as well. Furthermore, the new proposed controller injects sinusoidal output currents with decreased levels of total harmonic distortion (THD) into the grid. The tested case study is investigated for the various operating scenarios of PV generation and load demands. The results and tabulated performance comparisons have proven the superior performance of the proposed multifunctional PV generation system. The results show the ability of the proposed controller to efficiently extract distributed MPPT for all PV modules at all the tested scenarios.
