The effects of increasing fetal numbers and their distribution between the left and right uterine horns on calf survival, calf BW at birth and weaning, gestation length, dystocia, and calf sex ratio were evaluated for single (n = 1,587), twin (n = 2,440), and triplet calves (n = 147) born to primiparous and multiparous females in the Twinner population at the US Meat Animal Research Center between 1994 and 2004. Cattle were distributed equally between the spring and fall breeding seasons. Fetal number and distribution in utero were determined by real-time ultrasonography at 40 to 70 d postbreeding. For cows and heifers combined, number of calves per parturition increased from 1.34 in 1994 to 1.56 in 2004. Gestation length was 6.8 d shorter (P < 0.01) for twins compared with singles (277.5 +/- 0.2 vs. 284.3 +/- 0.2 d) and 12.7 d shorter for triplets (271.6 +/- 0.8 d). Survival and BW of individual calves at birth decreased (P < 0.01) but total calf BW per dam increased (P < 0.01) as fetal number increased from single to triplet births. Twins resulting from bilateral twin ovulations had increased (P < 0.01) survival and BW at birth, a longer (P < 0.01) gestation length, and less (P < 0.01) dystocia than twins resulting from unilateral twin ovulations. Calf survival and BW at birth were 97.2 +/- 0.3% and 48.0 +/- 0.1 kg for singles, 92.0 +/- 0.4% and 39.0 +/- 0.2 kg for bilateral twins, 83.2 +/- 0.4% and 36.7 +/- 0.2 kg for unilateral twins, 73.8 +/- 1.4% and 30.6 +/- 0.7 kg for bilateral triplets, and 51.9 +/- 3.2% and 31.7 +/- 1.6 kg for unilateral triplets. Birth weight of single calves increased by 0.51 kg/d for each additional day of gestation length vs. 0.38 kg/d for individual twins. Calf BW at birth increased (P < 0.01) with age of dam from 2 to 4 yr. Twin and triplet births had a greater (P < 0.01) incidence of dystocia than single births. The ratio of male:female calves (0.52:0.48) at birth was not affected by type of birth. Postnatal calf survival was similar for all 3 types of birth. Total progeny BW at weaning for single, twin, and triplet births was 217.7 +/- 2.5, 328.3 +/- 3.2, and 378.4 +/- 15.0 kg, respectively (P < 0.01). Although most bovine females have the uterine capacity to gestate twin calves, decreased survival and BW of unilateral twins and of all triplets indicate that their growth and development may have been compromised by uterine crowding.

Effects of ovulation rate and of fetal number and distribution within the uterus on pregnancy rate and fetal survival were evaluated in nulliparous (n = 1,331) and parous (n = 3,517) cattle selected for twinning. Cattle were divided into a spring (70 d) and fall (60 d) breeding season and bred by a combination of AI and natural service. Ovulation rate, pregnancy status, and fetal number and distribution were determined by transrectal, real-time ultrasonography of the uterus and both ovaries at the end of the breeding season. Pregnancy was reconfirmed by rectal palpation at 75 to 135 d of gestation. For heifers and cows combined, ovulation rate increased (P < 0.01) from 1.46 +/- 0.4 in 1994 to 1.89 +/- 0.4 in 2004; number of calves per parturition increased (P < 0.01) from 1.34 +/- 0.3 to 1.56 +/- 0.3, respectively, which included an increase in triplet and quadruplet ovulations and triplet births. Bilateral twin ovulations yielded proportionately more (P < 0.01) twin births than unilateral twin ovulations. Ovulation rate was greater (P < 0.01) in the fall than spring breeding season. Pregnancy rate at ultrasound diagnosis did not differ among females with 1, 2, or 3 ovulations (89.1 +/- 0.7, 91.2 +/- 0.7, or 91.5 +/- 2.8%, respectively), but rates at calving decreased (P < 0.01) with increasing ovulation rate (85.1 +/- 0.6, 82.7 +/- 0.6, or 64.2 +/- 2.7%, respectively). Pregnancy rate was less (P < 0.01) after twin or triplet births than single births. For dams birthing twins or triplets, pregnancy rate was less in the fall vs. spring, but rates were similar between seasons for dams with a single birth (type of birth x season, P < 0.05). Cows 60 d, regardless of type of birth. Maintenance of pregnancy to term differed (P < 0.01) among females diagnosed with 1, 2, or 3 fetuses (95.7 +/- 0.6, 87.8 +/- 0.8, and 54.9 +/- 2.3%, respectively). The reduced survival of twin and triplet fetuses in heifers had occurred (P < 0.01) by d 75 to 135 of gestation, and fetal losses were greater (P < 0.01) for unilateral than bilateral twins or triplets, whereas loss of twin or triplet fetuses in cows occurred later in gestation, and losses were not affected by uterine location. Thus, increased calf production from selecting for increased ovulation rate in beef cattle is tempered by increased fetal mortality, partially associated with the crowding of 2 or 3 fetuses within 1 uterine horn, especially in heifers.

Genetic parameters for stayability to six ages (ST1, . . ., ST6), for five measures of stayability to calving (SC2, . . ., SC6), and for five measures of stayability to weaning (SW2, . . ., SW6), were estimated using records of 2,019 Hereford cows collected from 1964 to 1979 from a selection experiment with a control line and three lines selected for weaning weight, yearling weight, and an index of yearling weight and muscle score. The model included birth year of the cow as a fixed effect and the cow's sire as a random effect. Analyses were performed with 1) a generalized linear mixed model for binary data using a probit link with a penalized quasi-likelihood function, and 2) with a linear mixed model using REML. Genetic trends were estimated by regressing weighted means of estimated transmitting abilities (ETA) of sires by birth year of their daughters on birth year. Environmental trends were estimated by regressing solutions for year of birth on birth year. Estimates of heritability (SE) for ST were between 0.09 (0.08) and 0.30 (0.14) for threshold model and between 0.05 (0.04) and 0.19 (0.09) for linear model. Estimates of heritability from linear model analyses transformed to an underlying normal scale were between 0.09 and 0.35. Estimates of heritability (SE) for SC were between 0.29 (0.10) and 0.39 (0.11) and between 0.18 (0.09) and 0.25 (0.08) with threshold and linear models. Estimates of heritability transformed to an underlying normal scale were between 0.30 and 0.40. Estimates of heritability (SE) for SW were between 0.21 (0.14) and 0.47 (0.19) and between 0.12 (0.08) and 0.26 (0.12) with threshold and linear models, respectively. Estimates of heritability transformed to an underlying normal scale were between 0.21 and 0.50. Estimates of genetic and environmental trends for all lines were nearly zero for all traits. Correlations between ETA of sires for stayability to specific ages, for stayability to calving, and for stayability to weaning with threshold and linear models ranged from 0.09 to 0.82, from 0.68 to 0.90, and from 0.67 to 0.87, respectively. Selection for stayability would be possible in a breeding program and could be relatively effective as a result of the moderate estimates of heritability, which would allow selection of sires whose daughters are more likely to remain longer in the herd. Selection for weaning and yearling weights resulted in little correlated response for any of the measures of stayability.

There is limited genetic information relating calving difficulty and body weights to other productive and reproductive traits. Such information is useful for specifying selection criteria and for predicting economic consequences of selection. Genetic, maternal, and environmental covariances of six productive and reproductive measurements with calving difficulty, birth weight, 200-d weight, and 168-d postweaning gain were estimated in 12 experimental populations of cattle. Calf (direct) genetic effects resulting in longer gestation length were associated with increased calving difficulty and birth weight. Maternal genetic effects of increased gestation length and heavier birth weight were significantly associated. Lighter birth weight and reduced calving difficulty were associated with earlier heifer age at puberty. Increases in direct genetic effects of calving difficulty, 200-d weight, and postweaning gain were associated with a small increase in direct effect of scrotal circumference. Increased direct genetic effects of scrotal circumference were correlated with maternal effects decreasing calving difficulty and increasing 200-d weight. Direct effects of the skeletal measurements, yearling hip height, and heifer pelvic area were positively correlated with direct effects of calving difficulty, birth weight, 200-d weight, and postweaning gain, positively correlated with maternal effects for birth weight and 200-d weight, and negatively correlated with maternal calving difficulty. Percentage of retail product was positively associated with calving difficulty and negatively associated with 168-d gain. Predicted genetic change in calving difficulty resulting from one standard deviation of selection for either calving difficulty score or birth weight was much larger than for any other traits. Selection for 200-d weight, 168-d postweaning gain, hip height, pelvic area, or scrotal circumference was predicted to have opposite effects on direct and maternal calving difficulty. Estimated genetic correlations indicate some small to moderate relationships between calving difficulty and the measured productive and reproductive traits. However, selection for reduced calving difficulty should be based on calving difficulty score and(or) birth weight because of their superiority in predicted genetic change.

The effects of twinning, dystocia, retained placenta, and body weight on postpartum reproduction were evaluated for 3,370 single and 1,014 twin births. Females were bred by AI for 40 d followed by 20 or 30 d of natural service with equal numbers bred and calved in spring and fall. Percentage of dams cyclic by the end of the AI period was lower (P<.05) for dams birthing and nursing a single calf (92.4%) than for dams birthing twins and nursing zero (98.7%) or two (94.7%) calves. Whereas the interval from parturition to first estrus was shorter (P<.01) for dams birthing and nursing a single (56.9 d) than for dams birthing twins and nursing one (68.5 d) or two (69.6 d) calves, length of the interval was further reduced by dystocia in nonlactating dams of either twins or singles (type of birth x dystocia, P<.05). Ensuing pregnancy rates were also affected by type of birth and dystocia. Without dystocia, dams birthing and nursing a single calf had a higher pregnancy rate (79.2%) than dams birthing twins and nursing one (61.7%) or two (66.3%) calves, whereas the lower ensuing pregnancy rates associated with dystocia in dams of singles (71.9%) resulted in similar rates among dams of singles and twins with dystocia (type of birth x dystocia; P<.01). Having a retained placenta resulted in a lower incidence of (93.5 vs. 96.4%, with vs. without; P<.05) and a longer interval to (64.7 vs. 59.2 d; P<.01) estrus while reducing subsequent pregnancy rates (X = 9.6%) in 3 of the 7 yr evaluated (retained placenta x year, P<.01). Because all parous females were bred during the same calendrical period, the shorter gestation length for twin calves (275.6 vs. 281.3 d) resulted in a longer interval from parturition to conception for twin births, whereas means for conception date differed by only 2 d between dams of twins and singles. Furthermore, a reduction (P<.01) in the interval to conception occurred with dystocia in dams of singles (89.3 vs. 85.0 d, without vs. with dystocia) and of twins nursed by zero (116.9 vs. 83.5 d), one (100.2 vs. 92.8 d), or two (96.1 vs. 97.2 d) calves. Another detriment to fertility was the higher incidence of fetal mortality or abortions associated with twin vs. single pregnancies (12.4 vs. 3.5%; P<.01). However, despite the lower conception rates for dams of twins, the increased prolificacy provides an opportunity to increase total beef production with a twinning technology.

The effects of maternal heterosis and maternal and grandmaternal breed effects on cumulative lifetime number and weight of calves weaned per cow entering the breeding herd were evaluated for 172 reciprocal crossbred and 156 straightbred cows of the Hereford, Angus, and Shorthorn breeds. Cows born in 1960 and 1961 were developed and mated to calve first at 3 yr of age and those born in 1962 and 1963 at 2 yr of age. Performance under actual culling of cows nonpregnant in two consecutive years and imposed culling of any nonpregnant cows were analyzed. Reproductive rates and weaning weight per calf and per cow exposed increased (P less than .05) as cows advanced from 2 through 5 yr of age, peaked at ages 5 through 9 yr, and decreased from 9 through 12 yr. Effects of heterosis did not interact (P greater than .05) with age at first calving management. During the 12-yr span in the 2-yr-old first-calving management system, crossbred cows produced nearly one more calf than straightbred cows under the actual culling policy (.97 calves, P less than .10) and .82 more calves (P less than .10) if all nonpregnant cows were culled. Corresponding cumulative calf weight weaned was 272 kg (P less than .01), or 25% more, and 232 kg (P less than .01), or 30% more, for crossbred cows than for straightbred cows. The 12-yr cumulative calf weight weaned by straightbred Angus cows exceeded that of Shorthorn cows (P less than .05) and tended to be greater than that of Hereford cows.

Experimental lifetime performance data obtained from 156 straightbred Hereford, Angus, and Shorthorn and 172 first-cross heifers were used to estimate heterosis for economic efficiency in a 100-cow herd at age equilibrium under three culling policies and at terminal ages from 6 to 12 yr. All nonpregnant heifers and cows greater than 9 yr of age were culled. The culling policy for removal of nonpregnant cows from second parity through 9 yr of age were 1) no culling, 2) after two consecutive years (actual), and 3) all (imposed). Efficiency was calculated as input cost per unit of output value. A 10-yr average was used for costs of replacement heifers, cow units, and the ratio of calf:cull cow prices (PR), plus higher and lower PR. Input included costs for both cow units and purchased replacements. Output value included both weaned calves and cull cows. Optimum terminal age was mainly a function of PR: 9 yr for average and high PR, but 6 through 9 yr when PR was low, regardless of culling policy or breed groups. Efficiency differences among culling policies were small for high or average PR, but more culling for infertility was beneficial when PR was low. Estimated reductions in unit costs of output value under any culling policy or terminal age were approximately 6% from crossbred cows plus another 6% from crossbred calves, or a total of 12% from specific three-breed crossing of these British breeds. Cost reductions would be somewhat less for rotation crossbreeding but greater for mating smaller crossbred cows with sires of superior growth-carcass breeds.

Heterosis effects in F1 dams producing F2 progeny and retained heterosis in combined F2 and F3 dams producing F3 and F4 progeny were evaluated in dams 2 yr old, in dams greater than or equal to 5 yr old, and in dams of all ages. Traits included pregnant percentage, calf crop born percentage, calf crop weaned percentage, 200-d calf weight per heifer or cow exposed, and 200-d calf weight. Breed effects were evaluated in the nine parental breeds (Red Poll [R], Hereford [H], Angus [A], Limousin [L], Braunvieh [B], Pinzgauer [P], Gelbvieh [G], Simmental [S], and Charolais [C]) that contributed to the three composite populations (MARC I = 1/4 B, 1/4 C, 1/4 L, 1/8 H, 1/8 A; MARC II = 1/4 G, 1/4 S, 1/4 H, 1/4 A; and MARC III = 1/4 R, 1/4 P, 1/4 H, 1/4 A). Breed effects were significant for all traits evaluated in the three age groupings and generally were greatest in 2-yr-old dams and smallest in dams greater than or equal to 5 yr old. Heterosis effects for 200-d calf weight were relatively uniform among age groupings and among the three composite populations and heterosis retained was equal to, or greater than, expectation based on retained heterozygosity. Heterosis effects in animals of all ages for reproductive traits in F1 dams producing F2 progeny differed among the three composite populations, as did heterosis retained in combined F2 and F3 dams producing F3 and F4 progeny. In dams of all ages, heterosis retained for reproductive traits in F2 and F3 dams producing F3 and F4 progeny did not differ (P greater than .05) from expectation based on retained heterozygosity in two of the three composite populations, but loss of heterosis was greater (P less than .05) than expectation based on retained heterozygosity in one of the three composite populations for calf crop born percentage, calf crop weaned percentage, and 200-d calf weight per heifer or cow exposed. Records of Angus, Hereford, Shorthorn, and first-cross cows born from 1960 to 1963 were used to study the effect of age at first calving and culling policy on cumulative survival (SU), number of breeding seasons (BS), pregnancies (PG), calves born (CB) and alive at 72 h (C72) and at weaning (CW), calf weaning weights (WW), and input/output efficiency, up to 12 yr of age. The 155 cows born in 1960 and 1961 calved first at 3 yr of age (M3) and the 173 born in 1962 and 1963 calved at 2 yr of age (M2). Analyses included both actual culling of cows open in two consecutive years (AC) and imposed culling of any open cow (IC). Also, economic efficiency for no culling (NC) of cows for infertility after first calving and up to 10 yr of age was calculated. The model included cow birth year-sire breed of cow (Y-S), sires within Y-S, breed of cow's dam (D), and D x Y-S. Linear functions of Y-S were used to estimate means for M2 and M3 cows. Under AC, by 12 yr of age M2 exceeded M3 cows by 6.8% SU, 1.1 BS, 1.2 PG, 1.1 CB, 1.0 C72, .9 CW, and 138 kg WW (P less than .10). Under IC, M2 exceeded M3 cows by only .7% SU, .3 BS, .3 PG, .3 CB, .2 C72, and .1 CW; and M3 produced 24 kg more WW than M2 cows (P greater than .10). Economic efficiency was higher for M2 than for M3 cows (greater than 10% at 6 yr to greater than 5% at 12 yr culling age), regardless of culling policy. Economic efficiency was maximum when terminal age of cows was 6 to 9 yr for M2 and 8 to 9 yr for M3 cows. Repeatability of pregnancy was higher (P less than .05) for M3 (19%) than for M2 (2%) cows. Economic efficiency for M2 or M3 cows under NC was slightly poorer (2 to 3%) than under either AC or IC policies. Economic efficiency can be improved by managing heifers to calve first as 2-yr-olds under either mild or intense culling of open cows.

Data on 2,744 calves produced in Clay Center, Nebraska and Brooksville, Florida were used to evaluate the importance of genotype x location interactions on the reproductive and maternal performance of eight breed groups of F1 crossbred cows. A total of 648 F1 crossbred cows included Bos taurus x Bos taurus (Bt x Bt) crosses: Hereford x Angus reciprocal crossbreds (HA and AH), Pinzgauer x Angus (PA), Pinzgauer x Hereford (PH); and Bos indicus x Bos taurus (Bi x Bt) crosses: Brahman x Angus (BA), Brahman x Hereford (BH), Sahiwal x Angus (SA) and Sahiwal x Hereford (SH). The first calf crop was sired by Red Poll bulls. All remaining calf crops were sired by Simmental bulls. Although the pregnancy rate was 9% higher in Nebraska, the rate of unassisted calvings and calf survival rate were both 4.6% lower in Nebraska. Calf birth and weaning weights were 8.0 and 15.6 kg heavier in Nebraska than in Florida. Bi x Bt dams exceeded (P less than .001) Bt x Bt crossbred dams for all traits except age of calf at weaning and calf-survival rates (P greater than .10). Birth weights of calves from Bi x Bt crossbred dams were 3.4 kg lighter than those from the Bt x Bt crossbred dams. The interaction of location with the breed group comparison of Bi x Bt vs Bt x Bt crossbred dams was significant for pregnancy rate, calf age at weaning, rate of unassisted calving and all weight traits. Adjusted weaning weights of calves from HA, AH, PA, PH, BA, BH, SA and SH cows were as follows: HA, 194 and 222; AH, 202 and 230; PA, 213 and 242; PH, 217 and 245; BA, 251 and 254; BH, 252 and 254; SA, 236 and 238; and SH, 238 and 243 kg, respectively, in Florida and Nebraska. Bos indicus-sired cows (BA, BH, SA and SH) weaned essentially equal-weight calves at both locations, whereas calves from Bt x Bt crossbred cows (HA, AH, PA, PH) were about 28 kg lighter in Florida.
