Objectives The present study expands on previous research by examining whether the spouse's retirement affects individual depression both directly, by the changes in individual health investment, and indirectly, through the social interaction effect of the couples' depression. Methods Using the panel data from the 2010–2018 China Family Panel Studies, we investigate the direct and indirect spillover effects of the spouse's retirement on depression among Chinese urban-worker couples (men aged 50–70, women aged 40–60; n  = 10,466). To address the potential endogeneity and reflect the social interaction effect of the couples' depression, we combine the Fuzzy Regression Discontinuity method with simultaneous equations. Results Overall, a spouse's retirement would improve an individual's depression, with the direct spillover dominating compared to the indirect spillover. Gender heterogeneity indicates that husbands' depression is improved by wives' retirement mainly because husbands might receive more healthcare and companionship provided by their retired wives, while wives' depression is aggravated by husbands' retirement because of the decline in household income and the lesser health investment. This difference is more evident when wives retire earlier and both spouses retire in the same year. With the spouse's retirement years increasing, husbands' depression improves and wives' depression declines each year. Moreover, spouses' depression is significantly interactive, and wives' depression is more vulnerable to husbands' depression. Objective: This nationwide cohort study aimed to examine the association between PM2.5 and diabetes mellitus (DM) risk. Methods: We recorded annual average PM2.5 exposure levels at participants' locations. PM2.5 concentrations were categorized into quartiles: Q1 (<29.5 μg/m³), Q2 (29.5-33.3 μg/m³), Q3 (33.4 41.2 μg/m³), and Q4 (>41.2 μg/m³). Results: A total of 158,038 patients (69,688 men and 88,350 women) were enrolled. Diabetes mellitus incidence increased with higher annual PM2.5 concentrations (2.81 in QI, 3.06 in Q2, 3.65 in Q3, and 3.89 in Q4 per 10,000 person-years). After adjusting for confounders, patients exposed to PM2.5 in Q2, Q3, and Q4 had adjusted hazard ratios of 1.14 (95% CI: 1.05-1.23), 1.40 (95% CI: 1.30-1.50), and 1.42 (95% CI: 1.32-1.53), respectively, for developing DM compared with those exposed to Q1 -PM2.5 concentrations. Background: Growing evidence has revealed the critical regulatory role for circular RNAs (circRNAs) in cancer. This study aimed to explore the function of circ_0001387 in breast cancer (BC). Methods: Circ_0001387, miR‐136‐5p, and spindle and kinetochore‐associated protein 2 (SKA2) levels were analyzed by quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction. Clone formation and 5‐ethynyl‐2′‐deoxyuridine assays were used to analyze cell proliferation. Cell apoptosis and cell migration and invasion abilities were analyzed using flow cytometry or transwell assay. Mechanism assay was used to confirm the association between miR‐136‐5p and circ_0001387 or SKA2. The effect of circ_0001387 on tumor growth in vivo was analyzed by the xenograft mice model. Results: Circ_0001387 and SKA2 were expressed at high levels, whereas miR‐136‐5p was lowly expressed in BC tissues and cells. Meanwhile, the downregulation of circ_0001387 restrained BC cell progression in vitro and in vivo. Circ_0001387 competitively bound to miR‐136‐5p to regulate BC cell malignant behaviors. SKA2 was targeted by miR‐136‐5p, and SKA2 reinstated the suppressive effect of miR‐136‐5p upregulation in BC cells. This study aimed to determine the relationship between bilirubin levels and carotid atherosclerosis (CAS) in the health screening population. After propensity score matching, this retrospective cohort study included 4360 subjects who underwent health examinations regularly in Hebei General Hospital between January 2010 and December 2019 and had no carotid plaque at baseline. After an average follow-up of 26.76 months, the main endpoint Cox regression analysis of carotid plaques was performed. After adjusting the confounding factors, Cox regression analysis showed that when serum total bilirubin (TBIL) and unconjugated bilirubin (UCB) increased by 1 standard deviation (SD), the risk of carotid plaque decreased by 7.30% (95% confidence interval (CI): 2.80–11.60%) and 15.70% (95% CI: 11.40–19.80%), respectively. When conjugated bilirubin (CB) increased by 1 SD, the risk of carotid plaques increased by 24.3% (95% CI: 19.7–29.0%). Purpose: To examine the associations of healthy dietary patterns with cardiometabolic biomarkers and all-cause mortality among individuals with prediabetes. Methods: This cohort study included 8363 adults with prediabetes from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999–2014. Healthy dietary patterns including Alternate Healthy Eating Index-2010 (AHEI-2010), Alternate Mediterranean Diet score (AMED), Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension score (DASH), and Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015) were calculated based on 24-h dietary recall data. Mortality status was obtained by linkage to National Death Index records. Cardiometabolic biomarkers, including blood glucose, insulin, HbA1c, C-reactive protein (CRP), and lipids, were measured at recruitment. Results: During 61,991 person-years of follow-up, 991 deaths occurred. Comparing the extreme quartiles, the multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for all-cause mortality were 0.65 (0.49, 0.85) for AHEI-2010 (P-trend = 0.002), 0.68 (0.50, 0.92) for AMED (P-trend = 0.004), 0.72 (0.53, 0.98) for DASH (P-trend = 0.03), and 0.78 (0.58, 1.05) for HEI-2015 (P-trend = 0.08). Besides, the HRs (95% CIs) for all-cause mortality per 20-percentile increment in scores were 0.78 (0.67, 0.90) for AHEI-2010 (P = 0.001), 0.73 (0.62, 0.86) for AMED (P < 0.001), 0.84 (0.69, 1.02) for DASH (P = 0.08), and 0.86 (0.74, 1.00) for HEI-2015 (P = 0.04). In addition, higher dietary scores were associated with favorable blood glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR, blood lipids, and CRP (all P-trend < 0.05). The high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and CRP explained 1.53–9.21% of the associations between dietary patterns and all-cause mortality (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Diets with higher AHEI-2010, AMED, DASH, and HEI-2015 were associated with improved cardiometabolic factors and lower all-cause mortality among individuals with prediabetes. These findings suggest that multiple healthy dietary patterns instead of a one-size-fits-all diet plan might be beneficial and acceptable for individuals with prediabetes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) remains an incurable hematological malignancy and patients have short survival due to AML relapse. In this study, we identified that TRIM10 was most downregulated in AML cell lines and AML patients. We further found that TRIM10 inhibits the growth of AML cells in vitro and in vivo. More importantly, our results indicated that TRIM10 plays a tumor suppressor role in AML cells by affecting the NF-κB signal pathway, which can be targeted with epigenetic therapy. Background: Accumulating evidence suggests that members of the tripartite motif (TRIMs) family play a crucial role in the development and progression of hematological malignancy. Here, we explored the expression and potential role of TRIM10 in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Methods: The expression levels of TRIM10 were investigated in AML patients and cell lines by RNA-seq, qRT-PCR and Western blotting analysis. Lentiviral infection was used to regulate the level of TRIM10 in AML cells. The effects of TRIM10 on apoptosis, drug sensitivity and proliferation of AML cells were evaluated by flow cytometry and cell-counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay, as well as being assessed in a murine model. Results: TRIM10 mRNA and protein expression was reduced in primary AML samples and AML cell lines in comparison to the normal controls and a human normal hematopoietic cell line, respectively. Moreover, overexpression of TRIM10 in HL60 and K562 cells inhibited AML cell proliferation and induced cell apoptosis. The nude mice study further confirmed that overexpression of TRIM10 blocked tumor growth and inhibited cell proliferation. In contrast, knockdown of TRIM10 in AML cells showed contrary results. Subsequent mechanistic studies demonstrated that knockdown of TRIM10 enhanced the expression of nuclear protein P65, which implied the activation of the NF-κB signal pathway. Consistently, overexpression of TRIM10 in AML cells showed a contrary result. These data indicated that inactivation of the NF-κB pathway is involved in TRIM10-mediated regulation in AML. TRIM10 expression can be de-repressed by a combination that targets both DNA methyltransferase and histone deacetylase. Conclusions: Our results strongly suggested that TRIM10 plays a tumor suppressive role in AML development associated with the NF-κB signal pathway and may be a potential target of epigenetic therapy against leukemia. Aim. Hyperuricemia (HUA) has received increased attention in the last few decades due to its global prevalence. Our previous study found that administration of a macroporous resin extract of Dendrobium officinale leaves (DoMRE) to rats with HUA that was induced by exposure to potassium oxazine combined with fructose and a high-purine diet led to a significant reduction in serum uric acid (SUA) levels. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of DoMRE on hyperuricemia induced by anthropomorphic unhealthy lifestyle and to elucidate its possible mechanisms of action. Methods. Dosages (5.0 and 10.0 g/kg/day) of DoMRE were administered to rats daily after induction of HUA by anthropomorphic unhealthy lifestyle for 12 weeks. The levels of UA in the serum, urine, and feces; the levels of creatinine (Cr) in the serum and urine; and the levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in serum were all measured using an automatic biochemical analyzer. The activities of xanthine oxidase (XOD) and adenosine deaminase (ADA) in the serum, liver, and intestine tissue supernatant were measured using appropriate kits for each biological target. The expressions levels of UA transporters (ABCG2 and GLUT9), tight junction (TJ) proteins (ZO-1 and occludin), and inflammatory factors (IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α) in the intestine were assayed by immunohistochemical (IHC) staining. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining was used to assess histological changes in the renal and intestinal tissues. Results. DoMRE treatment significantly reduced SUA levels and concomitantly increased fecal UA (FUA) levels and the fractional excretion of UA (FEUA) in HUA rats. Furthermore, DoMRE significantly reduced both the XOD activity in the serum, liver, and intestine and the ADA activity in the liver and intestine. DoMRE also effectively regulated the expression of GLUT9 and ABCG2 in the intestine, and it significantly upregulated the expression of the intestinal TJ proteins ZO-1 and occludin. Therefore, DoMRE reduced the damage to the intestinal barrier function caused by the increased production of inflammatory factors due to HUA to ensure normal intestinal UA excretion. Conclusion. DoMRE demonstrated anti-HUA effects in the HUA rat model induced by an anthropomorphic unhealthy lifestyle, and the molecular mechanism appeared to involve the regulation of urate transport-related transporters (ABCG2 and GLUT9) in the intestine, protection of the intestinal barrier function to promote UA excretion, and inhibition of XOD and ADA activity in the liver and intestine to inhibit UA production in the HUA-induced rats. Preoperative MRI is one of the most important clinical results for the diagnosis and treatment of glioma patients. The objective of this study was to construct a stable and validatable preoperative T2-weighted MRI-based radiomics model for predicting the survival of gliomas. A total of 652 glioma patients across three independent cohorts were covered in this study including their preoperative T2-weighted MRI images, RNA-seq and clinical data. Radiomic features (1731) were extracted from preoperative T2-weighted MRI images of 167 gliomas (discovery cohort) collected from Beijing Tiantan Hospital and then used to develop a radiomics prediction model through a machine learning-based method. The performance of the radiomics prediction model was validated in two independent cohorts including 261 gliomas from the The Cancer Genomae Atlas database (external validation cohort) and 224 gliomas collected in the prospective study from Beijing Tiantan Hospital (prospective validation cohort). RNA-seq data of gliomas from discovery and external validation cohorts were applied to establish the relationship between biological function and the key radiomics features, which were further validated by single-cell sequencing and immunohistochemical staining. The 14 radiomic features-based prediction model was constructed from preoperative T2-weighted MRI images in the discovery cohort, and showed highly robust predictive power for overall survival of gliomas in external and prospective validation cohorts. The radiomic features in the prediction model were associated with immune response, especially tumour macrophage infiltration. The preoperative T2-weighted MRI radiomics prediction model can stably predict the survival of glioma patients and assist in preoperatively assessing the extent of macrophage infiltration in glioma tumours. Introduction: This study explores patterns of use of non-cigarette tobacco and nicotine products among adult cigarette smokers and recent ex-smokers. Along with cigarette smoking status we explore differences as a function of countries with different product regulations, gender, and age.Methods: Data came from the ITC Four Country Smoking and Vaping Wave 3 Survey conducted between February-June 2020. The analytic sample consisted of 9112 current cigarette smokers (at least monthly) and 1184 recent ex-smokers (quit cigarettes ≤ 2 years) from Australia, Canada, England, and the United States. Respondents were asked about their cigarette smoking and current use of the following non-cigarette products: combustible tobacco (cigars, cigarillos, pipe, waterpipe); noncombustible tobacco (smokeless tobacco, and heated tobacco products [HTPs]); and non-tobacco nicotine products (nicotine vaping products [NVPs], nicotine replacement therapy [NRT], and nicotine pouches).Results: Overall, NVPs (13.7%) and NRT (10.9%) were the most reported nicotine products used, followed by cigars (5.3%), cigarillos (4.2%), and HTPs (3.5%). More than 21% current and recent ex-smokers of cigarettes reported using a non-tobacco nicotine product and noncombustible product, with respondents in England reporting the highest levels of use (>26%). Males, younger respondents, and current non-daily cigarette smokers were more likely to use non-cigarette nicotine products. Notably, 11.6% of ex-cigarette smokers were using other combustible tobacco.Conclusion: Considerable percentages of current cigarette smokers and ex-smokers use non-cigarette nicotine products, and there are unexpectedly high levels of use of other combustible products by those recent ex-smokers of cigarettes which is concerning and has important implications for definitions of smoking cessation.Implications: The tobacco product market has evolved to include new products which add to existing non-cigarette tobacco products creating a much more diverse nicotine market. This brief report provides a snapshot of use of various combustible and noncombustible nicotine-containing products among current cigarette smokers and recent ex-smokers in four western countries. Our results indicate that use of non-cigarette tobacco and nicotine products among these cigarette smokers and recent ex-smokers is not low, particularly among males, younger and non-daily cigarette smokers. Use of other combustible tobacco among respondents that recently quit cigarette smoking is concerning and has important implications for definitions of smoking cessation. Introduction: There is limited research on the role of flavors in nicotine vaping products (NVPs) in relation to smoking. We examined patterns of flavor use in NVPs in relation to progression toward quitting.Aims and Methods: Data come from 886 concurrent users of NVPs (at least weekly) and cigarettes who were first surveyed in 2016 and then successfully recontacted in 2018 as part of the ITC 4CV Surveys conducted in Australia, Canada, England, and the United States. Participants were asked about their main vaping flavor categorized as: (1) tobacco or unflavored, (2) menthol or mint flavored, and (3) "sweet" flavors (eg, fruit or candy). We examined whether flavor was associated with progression toward quitting smoking between survey years.Results: Overall, 11.1% of baseline concurrent users quit smoking by 2018. Compared with users of tobacco flavors, those vaping "sweet" flavors were more likely to quit smoking between surveys (13.8% vs. 9.6%; adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.61, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.01-2.58, p < .05), but those using menthol flavors were no more likely to quit smoking (8.3% vs. 9.6%, aOR = 0.87, 95% CI 0.43-1.47, p = .69). Among those who had quit smoking in 2018, 52.0% were still vaping, which was lower than the 65.8% among continuing smokers (aOR = 0.60, 95% CI 0.39-0.92, p = .02). Sweet flavor users were no more likely to continue vaping compared with tobacco flavor users, either for those continuing smoking or those having quit smoking by 2018. There was a net shift away from tobacco flavor among those who continued to vape at follow-up.Conclusions: Use of fruit and other sweet flavored e-liquids is positively related to smokers' transition away from cigarettes.Implications: With multiple jurisdictions considering limiting or banning the sale of flavored NVPs, it is important to consider how such policies may impact smokers using NVPs to transition away from cigarette smoking. Our results indicate that vapers who used sweet flavors were more likely to transition away from cigarette smoking and quit cigarette use, at least in the short term, compared with those who used tobacco or unflavored NVPs. Randomized clinical trials are needed to establish if the observed association between use of flavored e-liquids and smoking cessation is due to self-selection or is truly causal. Two new azaphilone pigments, talaralbols A and B (3 and 7), along with five known azaphilone metabolites (1, 2, and 4–6), were isolated from the culture of Talaromyces albobiverticillius associated with the isopod Armadillidium vulgare. Their structures were elucidated by a combination of 1 D and 2 D NMR data, ECD calculations, chemical transformations, and NMR data analogy with model compounds. Talaralbol A (3) showed a moderate inhibition on the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced nitric oxide (NO) production in RAW264.7 cells with the inhibitory rate being 31.0% at the concentration of 10 μM. Shenmai injection (SMI) has been widely used for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases in China. Cardiovascular disorders are often related to excessive catecholamine (CA) secretion. Here, we report the effects of SMI on CA secretion and synthesis in cultured bovine adrenal medullary cells. We found that SMI significantly reduced CA secretion induced by 300 μM acetylcholine (ACh). Cotreatment with SMI (10 μL/mL) and either of the ACh receptor α-subunit inhibitors, HEX (α3) or DhβE (α4β2), did not produce any further inhibition, indicating that SMI may play a role through α3 and α4β2 channels. Furthermore, SMI reduced tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) activity induced by ACh by inhibiting the phosphorylation of TH at Ser19 and Ser40. TH is phosphorylated at Ser19 by Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaM kinase II) and at Ser40 by protein kinase A (PKA). KN-93 and H89, the antagonists of CaM kinase II and PKA, respectively, inhibited the ACh-induced phosphorylation at Ser19 and Ser40, and the addition of SMI did not augment the inhibitory effect. Background/Objective: No systematic research focuses on the association between splenectomy and herpes zoster. This study aimed to investigate the association between splenectomy and herpes zoster in Taiwan. Methods: A population-based cohort study was conducted using the database of Taiwan National Health Insurance Program. There were 640 individuals aged 20-84 years who were newly diagnosed with splenectomy in 2000-2012 as the splenectomy group and 2546 sex-matched and age-matched individuals without splenectomy as the nonsplenectomy group. The incidence of herpes zoster at the end of 2013 was estimated. The multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to estimate the hazard ratio and 95% confidence interval (CI) for herpes zoster associated with splenectomy. Results: The overall incidence of herpes zoster was 1.41-fold higher in the splenectomy group than in the nonsplenectomy group (11.3 vs. 8.05 per 1000 person-years, 95% CI 1.11-1.78). After multivariable adjustments, the adjusted hazard ratio of herpes zoster was 1.57 for individuals with splenectomy (95% CI 1.08-2.29), compared with individuals without splenectomy. Conclusion: Individuals with splenectomy are associated with 1.57-fold increased risk for developing herpes zoster in Taiwan. Background: The role of cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) in cognitive impairment remains controversial.Objective: To investigate the possible links between the presence, progression, number, and location of CMBs and cognition.Methods: We assessed 792 subjects from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative who underwent both brain 3 Tesla MRI scans and cognitive testing. The association between CMBs and cognitive change was explored using linear mixed-effects models (LME).Results: Presence and number of CMBs were associated with memory (β= -0.03, p = 0.015; β= -0.01, p = 0.003), executive function (β= -0.04, p = 0.010; β= -0.01, p = 0.014), and global cognitive function (β= -0.06, p = 0.025; β= -0.03, p < 0.001). Progression of CMBs showed significant negative associations with executive function (β= -0.05, p = 0.025) and global cognitive function (β= -0.12, p = 0.015). The relations with cognitive performance (memory, executive function and global cognitive function) were mainly driven by lobar CMBs (β= -0.03, p = 0.041; β= -0.04, p = 0.010; β= -0.07, p = 0.029, respectively), especially those located in temporal lobe (β= -0.08, p = 0.027; β= -0.13, p = 0.001; β= -0.26, p < 0.001, respectively). Furthermore, white matter hyperintensities may mediate the association between CMBs and cognition.Conclusion: The presence, progression, number, and location of CMBs, especially those located in temporal lobe, are associated with cognitive decline. Background. The distinction between right-sided and left-sided colon adenocarcinoma has recently received considerable. This study aims to identify key MicroRNA (miRNA) and mRNAs in right-sided colon adenocarcinoma (RSCOAD) and left-sided colon adenocarcinoma (LSCOAD) by TCGA integration analysis. Methods. The miRNA and mRNA expression profiles of a large group of patients with RSCOAD and LSCOAD were obtained from TCGA. The differentially expressed miRNAs (DEmiRNAs) and mRNAs (DEmRNAs) were identified by TCGA integration analysis. The optimal diagnostic miRNA biomarkers for RSCOAD and LSCOAD were identified by Boruta algorithm. We established classification models to distinguish RSCOAD and LSCOAD. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis, DEmiRNA-DEmRNA interaction analysis, and functional annotation were performed. The expression of selected DEmiRNAs and DEmRNAs was validated by qRT-PCR. Results. A total of 2534 DEmRNAs (940 downregulated and 1594 upregulated mRNAs) and 54 DEmiRNAs (22 downregulated and 32 upregulated miRNAs) between RSCOAD and LSCOAD were identified. The feature selection procedure was to obtain 22 optimal diagnostic miRNAs biomarkers in RSCOAD compared to LSCOAD. The AUC of the random forests model was 0.869 and the specificity and sensitivity of this model were 79% and 84.6%, respectively. Three DEmiRNAs (hsa-miR-224-5p, hsa-miR-155-5p, and hsa-miR-31-5p) and five DEmRNAs (CXCR4, SMAD4, KRAS, FITM2, and PLAGL2) were identified key DEmiRNAs and DEmRNAs in RSCOAD compared to LSCOAD. The qRT-PCR results of CXCR4, FITM2, TFAP2A, ULBP2, hsa-miR-224-5p, and hsa-miR-155-5p were consistent with our integrated analysis. Conclusion. A total of three DEmiRNAs (hsa-miR-224-5p, hsa-miR-155-5p, and hsa-miR-31-5p) and five DEmRNAs (CXCR4, SMAD4, KRAS, FITM2, and PLAGL2) may be involved in the pathogenesis of RSCOAD and LSCOAD which may make a contribution for understanding mechanisms and developing therapeutic strategies for RSCOAD and LSCOAD. Background: Microglial cultures comprise a critically important model system for investigating inflammatory mechanisms in almost all CNS disorders. Mild trypsinization and shaking are the two most commonly used methods to isolate primary microglia from mixed glial cultures. In this study, we characterized and compared microglia obtained using these two methods.Methods: Primary rat microglia cultures were prepared from cerebral cortices of 1-2-day-old neonatal Sprague-Dawley rats. After achieving confluency at about 14 days in vitro, microglia were isolated from mixed glial cultures via either mild trypsinization or shaking. The purity of microglia was estimated by flow cytometry. Quantitative real-time PCR was used to measure mRNA expression. TNFα, IL-1β, IL-10, and IGF-1 in cell culture supernatant were measured using ELISA kits. Phagocytic function was assessed using fluorescein-labeled Escherichia coli K-12 BioParticles.Results: Mild trypsinization generated a higher yield and purity than shaking. Microglia isolated by mild trypsinization appeared to be in a quiescent state with ramified morphology. Microglia isolated by shaking showed a more heterogenous morphology, including cells with rounded shapes suggestive of activation. Compared with shaking, microglia isolated by trypsinization also had lower baseline phenotype markers (iNOS, CD86, CD206, and arginase 1) and lower levels of cytokines (TNFα, IL-1β, IL-10, and IGF-1) as well as reduced phagocytic capability. Both methods yielded microglia that were responsive to various stimuli such as IL-4, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), or interferon-γ (IFNγ). Although stimulated patterns of gene expression and cytokine release were generally similar, there were also significant differences in terms of absolute response. LPS treatment induced significantly higher levels of TNFα and IL-10 in microglia isolated by mild trypsinization versus shaking. IFNγ induced a lower response in TNFα in microglia obtained by mild trypsinization versus shaking.Conclusions: Our results suggest that isolating microglia with the shaking method may induce slight activation even at baseline, and this may affect stimulus responses in subsequent experiments. Background. The epidemiology of atopic dermatitis (AD) in Chinese outpatients is yet to be clarified. Objectives. To investigate population-based prevalence and clinical features of AD in Chinese outpatients. Methods. A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted in outpatients with eczema or dermatitis from 39 tertiary hospitals in 15 provinces. Results. This study included 682 patients diagnosed with AD, with the mean age of 28.8±20.1 years and the median course of 5.3±6.9 years. AD patients had more severe itching (30.4% versus 13.8%, p<0.001) and clinically suspected bacterial infection (21.7% versus 16.1%, p<0.001) than those of other types of dermatitis. Older patients were more susceptible to have a history of flexion dermatitis (p<0.001), bacterial infection (p=0.005), and severe itching (p<0.001). Outpatients with clinically suspected bacterial infection had 3.53-fold increased risk of AD than those without it (p<0.001). The morbidity rate of AD in the (20–25°N) region is 2.86 times higher than that in the (40–45°N) region [OR (95% CI): 0.352 (0.241–0.514), p<0.001]. Conclusions. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) causes local chronic inflammation that increases risks of Barrett's esophagus (BE) and esophageal adenocarcinoma (EA), yet symptomatic GERD is absent in approximately half of all such patients. Obesity exacerbates GERD and is also a component of metabolic syndrome (MetS). We evaluated the hypothesis that MetS is a GERD-independent mechanism by which obesity is associated with increased risks of BE and EA using data from the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink. BE cases (n=10,215) and EA cases (n=592) were each individually matched to five population controls based on age, sex, and general practice. MetS was defined as occurrence of at least three of the following: obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using conditional logistic regression. MetS was marginally associated with BE (OR=1.12, 95%CI 1.00-1.25). Similar effects were found for the individual component factors of obesity, hypertension, and high cholesterol. History of GERD modified the association (P-effect modification <1E-5), with the MetS-BE association confined to patients without a history of GERD (OR=1.33, 95%CI 1.12-1.58). No association between MetS and risk of EA was detected in the main or stratified analyses. In this large population-based case-control study, individuals with MetS had a marginally increased risk of BE in the absence of GERD. The systemic inflammatory state (MetS) may represent a reflux-independent inflammatory pathway that increases the risk of BE. MetS did not increase risk of EA in this study population. Berberine (BBR), an alkaloid component isolated from Chinese medicinal herb Huang Lian, has aroused broad interests for its antitumor effect in recent years. The signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), plays critical roles in malignant transformation and progression and was found to be constitutively activated in a variety of human cancers. In this study, we show that BBR inhibited cell proliferation, induced apoptosis, and suppressed tumor spheroid formation of lung cancer cell lines. These effects were correlated with BBR-mediated suppression of both phosphorylated and total levels of STAT3 protein. Furthermore, BBR promoted STAT3 degradation by enhancing ubiquitination. Importantly, we demonstrated that BBR was able to inhibit doxorubicin (DOX)-mediated STAT3 activation and sensitize lung cancer cells to the cytotoxic effect of DOX treatment. Given that BBR is widely used in clinic with low toxicity, our results are potentially important for the development of a novel combinatorial therapy with BBR and DOX in the treatment of lung cancer. The objective of this study was to estimate the subsequent cancer risk of women after receiving hysterosalpingography (HSG) by conducting a nationwide retrospective cohort study. We identified a study cohort of 4,371 patients who had had a HSG examination and a comparison cohort of 17,484 women without HSG examination between 1998 and 2005. Both cohorts were followed up with until the end of 2010 to measure the incidence of cancer. The risk of developing cancer for patients with HSG was assessed using the Cox proportional hazard model. In the multivariate analyses, the HSG cohort did not have a significantly greater risk of cancer (Hazard Ratio [HR] = 1.02, 95% CI = 0.79-1.31) than the non-HSG cohort. The HR was highest for genital cancer (HR = 1.32, 95% CI = 0.77-2.25), followed by urinary system cancer (HR = 1.11, 95% CI = 0.23-5.40), and abdominal cancer not involving the GU system (HR = 1.04, 95% CI = 0.53-2.03), all of which were non-significant elevations. The cancer incidence rates, especially that for urinary system cancer, were increased in the HSG cohort, but the increase in cancer incidence was small and not statistically significant. Simple Summary: Use of cancer biomarkers for tumor aggressiveness is an unmet clinical need. Differentiation of high-risk versus low-risk tumors may guide physicians to select appropriate treatment strategies tailored to the risk level of individual patients. This study aimed to evaluate the value of an optical redox imaging technique for differentiating a human melanoma mouse xenograft model with a high risk of metastasis from a low-risk mouse model. Several imaging indices were found to be significantly different between the two models. The high-risk model was found to be in a more oxidized status and to have a higher intratumor redox heterogeneity. These findings may inform further research development of the optical redox imaging approach into translatable cancer biomarkers in the future. To develop imaging biomarkers for tumors aggressiveness, our previous optical redox imaging (ORI) studies of the reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and oxidized flavoproteins (Fp, containing flavin adenine dinucleotide, i.e., FAD) in tumor xenografts of human melanoma associated the high optical redox ratio (ORR = Fp/(Fp + NADH)) and its heterogeneity to the high invasive/metastatic potential, without having reported quantitative results for NADH and Fp. Here, we implemented a calibration procedure to facilitate imaging the nominal concentrations of tissue NADH and Fp in the mouse xenografts of two human melanoma lines, an indolent less metastatic A375P and a more metastatic C8161. Images of the redox indices (NADH, Fp, ORR) revealed the existence of more oxidized areas (OAs) and more reduced areas (RAs) within individual tumors. ORR was found to be higher and NADH lower in C8161 compared to that of A375P xenografts, both globally for the whole tumors and locally in OAs. The ORR in the OA can differentiate xenografts with a higher statistical significance than the global averaged ORR. H&E staining of the tumors indicated that the redox differences we identified were more likely due to intrinsically different cell metabolism, rather than variations in cell density. Simple Summary: A reliable efficacy predictor for immunotherapy is warranted due to its unsatisfying responsive rate among cancer patients. Endonuclease VIII-like protein 3 (NEIL3) is a DNA glycosylase reported to be heightened in specific cancers. However, little is known regarding the immunological features of NEIL3 among cancers. Here, a pan-cancer landscape was presented to elucidate the characteristics of NEIL3 in the tumor microenvironment (TME). In this study, we demonstrated that NEIL3 may be a promising indicator for tumor prognosis, immunotherapy, and chemotherapy. With the aim of enhancing the understanding of NEIL3 in prognosis prediction and therapy administration, we conducted a pan-cancer landscape analysis on NEIL3. The mutation characteristics, survival patterns, and immune features of NEIL3 across cancers were analyzed. Western blotting, qPCR, and immunohistochemistry were conducted to validate the bioinformatics results. The correlation between NEIL3 and chemotherapeutic drugs, as well as immunotherapies, was estimated. NEIL3 was identified as an oncogene with prognostic value in predicting clinical outcomes in multiple cancers. Combined with the neoantigen, tumor mutational burden (TMB), and microsatellite instability (MSI) results, a strong relationship between NEIL3 and the TME was observed. NEIL3 was demonstrated to be closely associated with multiple immune parameters, including infiltrating immunocytes and pro-inflammatory chemokines, which was verified by experiments. More importantly, patients with a higher expression of NEIL3 were revealed to be more sensitive to chemotherapeutic regimens and immune checkpoint inhibitors in selected cancers, implying that NEIL3 may be an indicator for therapeutic administration. Our study indicated NEIL3 has a strong association with the immune microenvironment and phenotypic changes in certain types of cancers, which facilitated the improved understanding of NEIL3 across cancers and highlighted the potential for clinical application of NEIL3 in precision medical stratification. Background Few studies have investigated the relationship between carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Therefore, we conducted a nationwide longitudinal cohort study in Taiwan to determine whether patients with CO poisoning are associated with increased risk of developing DVT and PE. Methods This study investigated the incidence and risk factors for DVT and PE in 8316 patients newly diagnosed with CO poisoning from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database between 2000 and 2011. The comparison cohort contained 33 264 controls without CO poisoning from the general population. Follow-up was initiated on the date of initial diagnosis of CO poisoning and continued until the date of a DVT or PE event, censoring or December 31, 2011. Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to analyse the risk of DVT and PE according to sex, age and comorbidities. Results The incidences of DVT and PE were higher in the patients with CO poisoning than in the controls (5.67 vs 1.47/10 000 person-years and 1.97 vs 1.02/ 10 000 person-years, respectively). After adjusting for age, sex and comorbidities, the patients with CO poisoning were associated with a 3.85-fold higher risk of DVT compared with the comparison cohort, and nonsignificantly associated with risk of PE. CO poisoning patients with a coexisting comorbidity or acute respiratory failure were associated with significantly and substantially increased risk of DVT. Objective The purpose of this study is to compare glenopolar angle (GPA) and the functional outcomes of fixation of both the clavicle and the scapular neck, fixation of the clavicle alone, and conservative treatment for floating-shoulder injuries. Methods A prospective stratified randomized study was performed in 39 adult patients who suffered floating-shoulder injuries and underwent fixation of both the clavicle and the scapular neck (group A), or fixation of the clavicle alone (group B), or conservative treatment (group C) between January 2005 and September 2011. The GPA, Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) score, and Constant-Murley Shoulder Outcome (Constant) score were compared between the three groups. Results All 39 patients were followed up for more than 2 years. GPA after bony consolidation was significantly better in group A than in groups B and C (p = 0.015). Functional outcomes measured by DASH and Constant scores were significantly better in group A at final follow- up (p = 0.008 and 0.002, respectively). Both DASH and Constant scores were highly correlated with GPA after consolidation (p < 0.001, respectively). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis showed that of the two randomly selected DASH scores, the smaller DASH score would have a larger GPA than the larger DASH score. Similarly, the larger Constant score would have a larger GPA than the smaller Constant score. Conclusions Fixation of both the clavicle and the scapular neck may correct GPA and improve functional outcomes for the treatment of floating-shoulder injuries. A novel oxybis cresol compound named verticilatin (1), together with two known compounds, 5-methylresorcinol (2) and 2,4-dihydroxy-3,6-dimethylbenzaldehyde (3), was isolated from cultures of the insect pathogenic fungi Paecilomyces verticillatus. The structures of compounds were determined by extensive spectroscopic analysis of HR-ESI-MS and 1D and 2D NMR including HSQC, HMBC, COSY, and ROESY. Fortunately, compound 1 exhibited significant inhibitory activities against CDC25B, cathepsin B, MEG2, and SHP2 enzyme, with IC50 values of 11.5, 3.5, 7.8, and 15 μg/ml, respectively. Background: It is important to monitor whether anti-smoking messages (if any) are noticed by the public in China and whether they have any impact on smokers' quitting behaviours over time Purpose: This study aimed to examine Chinese smokers' exposure to anti-smoking messages in a range of channels and to determine if exposure was associated with subsequent quit attempts. Method: A prospective cohort design was employed. Participants were 6,509 adult smokers who completed at least one of the first three waves (2006-2009) of the International Tobacco Control (ITC) China Survey sampled from six Chinese cities. The main measures were reported exposure to anti-smoking messages in a range of channels and smokers' subsequent quit attempts. Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) modelling was used to combine respondents from all three waves while accounting for inherent within-person correlation. Results: The overall exposure levels to anti-smoking messages were low and varied between cities and from one channel to another. Television was the medium with the greatest overall exposure (over 50 % in almost all the cities across all the waves). After controlling for a range of covariates, higher level of combined exposure were positively related to higher subsequent quit attempts (adjusted odds ratio = 1.03, 95 % CI 1.02 ~ 1.05, p < .001); among the individual channels, exposures in newspapers and on posters were significant in their own right. Conclusion: The findings suggest that anti-smoking warning messages have the potential to stimulate Chinese smokers to make quit attempts, but they also indicate that the levels and strength of warning messages in China need to be increased. China should consider adopting proven international practices, including mandating pictorial health warnings on cigarette packages, adopting prominent point-of-sale warnings, and carrying out strong and ongoing mass media campaigns. Individuals with methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) commonly exhibit socially problematic behaviours. Investigating the prosocial decision-making of individuals with MUD could enable a better understanding of their impaired social functioning and help improve their social relationships. We conducted two studies to examine the performance of individuals with MUD and healthy controls on a modified dictator game. In Study 1, 55 male individuals with MUD and 34 healthy male participants made a series of choices between two pairs of monetary prizes for themselves and for others. In Study 2, 62 male individuals with MUD and 31 healthy male participants made the same choices as in Study 1 after a brief exposure to methamphetamine-related pictures. In both studies, we consistently found a context dependency of decreased prosociality in individuals with MUD. That is, individuals with MUD made fewer prosocial choices than healthy individuals in disadvantageous contexts (but not advantageous contexts). The results of the computational model suggested that the lower prosociality of individuals with MUD in disadvantageous contexts could be attributed to the lower weight placed on others' benefits. Moreover, when exposed to methamphetamine-related pictures, individuals with MUD showed less caution and slower encoding/motor speed than healthy individuals, and individuals with MUD with a longer history of methamphetamine use tended to respond less cautiously. Our findings provide evidence that in disadvantageous contexts, individuals with MUD show reduced prosociality and less consideration of others' benefits. The purpose of this study was to explore the sex difference and effects of blood pressure (BP) on the relationship between serum uric acid (SUA) and carotid plaque in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). This large multicenter retrospective study included 12099 patients with CHD (aged 35–75 years) between January 1, 2014 and September 30, 2020. Patients were divided into three groups according to systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP), and the SUA levels in males and females were converted into three groups. Logistic regression was used to analyze the influence of sex and BP on the relationship between SUA levels and carotid plaque in patients with CHD. In the model of male BP subgroups, using the BP of group A (normal with SBP <120 mmHg and DBP <80 mmHg) as a reference, SUA levels were significantly correlated with the occurrence of carotid plaque under different BP states (P <.001). In contrast, in the model of female BP subgroups, most of these correlations were not statistically significant. After studying a list of words that are semantically associated to a critical lure, participants are more likely to attribute a falsely recognised critical lure to the context of its strong than weak semantic associates. This is known as the source-strength effect. The current study investigated the roles of automatic and controlled processing in context retrieval in false recognition that is demonstrated by the source-strength effect. The results revealed that the source-strength effect was impervious to forewarning (Experiment 1) and remained intact when attentional resources at encoding were reduced (Experiment 2), suggesting that context retrieval in false recognition is based on automatic processes that are not amenable to conscious control and do not require many attentional resources. This interpretation is consistent with the associative activation theory, which proposes that context retrieval in false recognition is based on memory associations between contexts and critical lures that are automatically created when critical lures become automatically activated via spreading activation process. We investigated the association between anemia status and the risk of heart failure (HF) in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) based on a multi-center, large-sample and retrospective cross-sectional study including 89,207 patients. Heart failure was categorized as HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), and HF with mid-range ejection fraction (HFmrEF). In multi-adjusted models, compared with patients without anemia, mild anemia (odds ratio [OR] 1.71; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.53–1.91; P <.001), moderate anemia (OR 3.68; 95% CI, 3.25–4.17; P <.001), and severe anemia (OR 8.02; 95% CI, 6.50–9.88; P <.001) were associated with the risk of HF among CHD patients. Men aged <65 years were more likely to develop HF. In subgroup analyses, the multi-adjusted ORs and 95% CI of HFpEF, HFrEF, and HFmrEF related to anemia were 3.24 (95% CI 1.43–7.33), 2.22 (95% CI 1.28–3.84), and 2.55 (95% CI 2.24–2.89), respectively. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed a standard for respirator certification under 42 CFR Part 84, using a TSI 8130 automated filter tester with photometers. A recent study showed that photometric detection methods may not be sensitive for measuring engineered nanoparticles. Present NIOSH standards for penetration measurement are mass-based; however, the threshold limit value/permissible exposure limit for an engineered nanoparticle worker exposure is not yet clear. There is lack of standardized filter test development for engineered nanoparticles, and development of a simple nanoparticle filter test is indicated. To better understand the filter performance against engineered nanoparticles and correlations among different tests, initial penetration levels of one fiberglass and two electret filter media were measured using a series of polydisperse and monodisperse aerosol test methods at two different laboratories (University of Minnesota Particle Technology Laboratory and 3M Company). Monodisperse aerosol penetrations were measured by a TSI 8160 using NaCl particles from 20 to 300nm. Particle penetration curves and overall penetrations were measured by scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS), condensation particle counter (CPC), nanoparticle surface area monitor (NSAM), and TSI 8130 at two face velocities and three layer thicknesses. Results showed that reproducible, comparable filtration data were achieved between two laboratories, with proper control of test conditions and calibration procedures. For particle penetration curves, the experimental results of monodisperse testing agreed well with polydisperse SMPS measurements. The most penetrating particle sizes (MPPSs) of electret and fiberglass filter media were ~50 and 160nm, respectively. For overall penetrations, the CPC and NSAM results of polydisperse aerosols were close to the penetration at the corresponding median particle sizes. For each filter type, power–law correlations between the penetrations measured by different instruments show that the NIOSH TSI 8130 test may be used to predict penetrations at the MPPS as well as the CPC and NSAM results with polydisperse aerosols. It is recommended to use dry air (<20% RH) as makeup air in the test system to prevent sodium chloride particle deliquescing and minimizing the challenge particle dielectric constant and to use an adequate neutralizer to fully neutralize the polydisperse challenge aerosol. ABSTRACT Aims This study aimed to examine the associations between reported exposure to anti-smoking warnings at the point-of-sale (POS) and smokers' interest in quitting and their subsequent quit attempts by comparing reactions in Australia where warnings are prominent to smokers in other countries. Design A prospective multi-country cohort design was employed. Setting Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. Participants A total of 21 613 adult smokers who completed at least one of the seven waves (2002-08) of the International Tobacco Control Four Country Survey were included in the analysis. Measurements Reported exposure to POS anti-smoking warnings and smokers' interest in quitting at the same wave and quit attempts over the following year. Findings Compared to smokers in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States, Australian smokers reported higher levels of awareness of POS anti-smoking warnings, and this difference was consistent over the study period. Over waves in Australia (but not in the other three countries) there was a significantly positive association between reported exposure to POS anti-smoking warnings and interest in quitting [adjusted odds ratio = 1.139, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.039-1.249, P < 0.01] and prospective quit attempts (adjusted odds ratio = 1.216, 95% CI 1.114-1.327, P < 0.001) when controlling for demographics, smoking characteristics, overall salience of anti-smoking information and awareness of anti-smoking material from channels other than POS. Conclusions Point-of-sale health warnings about tobacco are more prominent in Australia than the United Kingdom, the United States or Canada and appear to act as a prompt to quitting. ABSTRACT Aims To describe some of the variability across the world in levels of quit smoking attempts and use of various forms of cessation support. Design Use of the International Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation Project surveys of smokers, using the 2007 survey wave (or later, where necessary). Settings Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Ireland, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Korea, Thailand, United Kingdom, Uruguay and United States. Participants Samples of smokers from 15 countries. Measurements Self-report on use of cessation aids and on visits to health professionals and provision of cessation advice during the visits. Findings Prevalence of quit attempts in the last year varied from less than 20% to more than 50% across countries. Similarly, smokers varied greatly in reporting visiting health professionals in the last year (<20% to over 70%), and among those who did, provision of advice to quit also varied greatly. There was also marked variability in the levels and types of help reported. Use of medication was generally more common than use of behavioural support, except where medications are not readily available. Conclusions There is wide variation across countries in rates of attempts to stop smoking and use of assistance with higher overall use of medication than behavioural support. To examine predictors of quitting behaviours among adult smokers in China, in light of existing knowledge from previous research in four western countries and two southeast Asian countries. Face-to-face interviews were carried out with smokers in 2006 using the International Tobacco Control (ITC) China Survey, with follow-up about 16 months later. A stratified multi-stage cluster sampling design was employed. Beijing and five other cities in China. A total of 4732 smokers were first surveyed in 2006. Of these, 3863 were re-contacted in 2007, with a retention rate of 81.6%. Baseline measures of socio-demographics, dependence and interest in quitting were used prospectively to predict both making quit attempts and staying quit among those who attempted. Overall, 25.3% Chinese smokers reported having made at least one quit attempt between waves 1 and 2; of these, 21.7% were still stopped at wave 2. Independent predictors of making quit attempts included having higher quitting self-efficacy, previous quit attempts, more immediate intentions to quit, longer time to first cigarette upon waking, negative opinion of smoking and having smoking restrictions at home. Independent predictors of staying quit were being older, having longer previous abstinence from smoking and having more immediate quitting intentions. Predictors of Chinese smokers' quitting behaviours are somewhat different to those found in previous research from other countries. Nicotine dependence and self-efficacy seem to be more important for attempts than for staying quit in China, and quitting intentions are related to both attempts and staying quit. Background: Endometriosis is a common chronic disorder, which leads to dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, pelvic chronic pain, and infertility. It affects ∼6% to 10% of the general female population. However, the etiology of endometriosis remained unclear. We aimed to systematically assess the association between pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and the risk of endometriosis. Materials and Methods: Eligible studies published until May 21, 2022, were retrieved from the PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases. The studies were included based on the following criteria: (1) original articles on the association between PID and risk of endometriosis; (2) randomized controlled trials and cross-sectional, case–control, and cohort studies; and (3) studies involving humans. The Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale was used to assess the quality of the studies included in this systematic review. The association between PID and risk of endometriosis was evaluated using the overall odds ratio (OR) and correlative 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: The meta-analysis included 14 studies with 747,733 patients. The mean prevalence of PID in women with endometriosis was 33.80%. Our quantitative synthesis revealed that endometritis was associated with a significantly increased risk of endometriosis (OR: 1.63, 95% CI: 1.53–1.74, I2 = 59%). Conclusion: We study a statistically significant association between PID and the risk of endometriosis. In particular, endometritis might play an important role in endometriosis, based on the lower heterogeneity of the subgroup analysis. Background: As inadequate pain communication contributes to difficulties in optimizing outcomes of outpatients, we investigated the effect of reinforced education using WeChat App to the opioid titration treatment of cancer-related pain in the outpatient setting.Methods: We conducted a prospective study to compare reinforced education using Wechat with care as usual from February to December 2019. Patients in the reinforced education group received reinforced education via Wechat, while those in the control group received care as usual. Effect measurements for both groups are carried out with questionnaires at the baseline and 3 days later. Questionnaires include pain intensity (NRS), treatment-related adverse events, cancer-related quality of life (QOL), sleep (PSQI), satisfaction, anxiety (GAD-7) and depression (PHQ-9). Number of patients whose NRS reduced to less than three points in 24 h was the primary outcomes. Secondary outcomes included treatment-related adverse events, cancer-related quality of life, sleep, satisfaction, anxiety and depression.Results: Although there was no significant difference regarding pain intensity (NRS) between the two groups at 72 h, the rate of NRS that reduced to less than three points in 24 h was significantly higher in the Wechat group than in the control group. Patients' satisfaction was significantly higher in the Wechat group than in the control group. There was no significant difference between the two groups regarding the other findings at 72 h, including pain intensity (NRS), cancer-related quality of life (QOL), anxiety (GAD-7), depression (PHQ-9), and sleep (PSQI). However, no significant difference was found between the two groups for constipation, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, somnolence, pruritus, loss of consciousness, and death.Conclusions: Our results indicated that receiving instructions delivered by Wechat resulted an increased number of patients with good pain control and better satisfaction. This study aimed to examine the relationships of self-efficacy, coping strategies, and quality of life (QoL) among patients with chronic hepatitis B and to explore whether coping strategies play a mediating role. In this cross-sectional study, 193 patients with chronic hepatitis B from two tertiary hospitals were recruited. Data were collected using a self-report questionnaire. The results indicated that physical and mental QoL were positively associated with self-efficacy and negatively associated with resignation coping. Moreover, resignation coping partially mediated the relationship between self-efficacy and physical and mental QoL. Our findings indicated that healthcare providers can enhance self-efficacy with an emphasis on reducing the use of resignation coping to better improve QoL among patients with chronic hepatitis B. Background: Regarding trochanteric hip fractures, one type of posterior coronal fragments was described as the "banana-shaped fragment", while the impact of the banana-shaped fragment on mechanical stability has not been further studied. The current study investigated the association between the banana-shaped fragment and mechanical complications after surgery. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 273 patients treated by proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA) in the full analysis. The age, the sex, the fracture side, the follow-up time, the American Society of Anesthesiologists classification, the operators, the fracture classification, the tip-apex distance, the blade positions, the reduction quality and the bone mineral density were analyzed in relation to mechanical complications, through univariate and multivariate approaches. Results: Mechanical complications happened in 33 patients. The banana-shaped fragment (adjusted odds ratio 5.240, 95% CI 2.172 to 12.641; p < 0.001), the tip-apex distance and the reduction quality showed significant association with mechanical complications in both univariate and multivariate analysis. Moreover, for 118 patients with the banana-shaped fragment, we found that the use of wire cerclage couldn't significantly lower the rates of mechanical complications (p = 0.648). Conclusions: The banana-shaped fragment had a negative impact on mechanical stability of trochanteric hip fractures treated by PFNA. Serum γ-glutamyltransferase (GGT) levels have been shown to be associated with C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. Nevertheless, studies on this relationship in coronary heart disease (CHD) populations are limited. This study retrospectively assessed 17 523 patients with CHD undergoing GGT and CRP testing. They were divided into 3 groups according to GGT tertiles. The critical points for high CRP levels was 10.0 mg/L, which corresponded to the 75th percentile. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the association between GGT and CRP levels in CHD patients. The baseline analysis showed significant differences in related parameters among patients with CHD. Compared with GGT tertile 1 (T1), the odds ratio (OR) of T3 for GGT in CHD patients was 2.15 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.96–2.36). The association between GGT and CRP was higher in males (OR: 2.23; 95% CI: 1.98–2.52) than in females (OR: 2.18; 95% CI: 1.89–2.51). This study showed an association between serum GGT and CRP levels in patients with CHD. GGT may be an inflammatory marker and an additional measure for assessing cardiovascular risk. SangQiQingXuan (SQQX) decoction is a pharmaceutical preparation exerting good therapeutic efficacy on high blood pressure (BP) and has widely been accepted in primarily hypertensive patients as a herbal formula prescribed by Professor Li Huang from China-Japan Friendship Hospital according to her 30-year clinical experience. A previous study showed that SQQX could reduce BP by decreasing levels of many inflammatory factors such as transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) and elevating peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPAR) expression. However, a research focusing on SQQX's protection against HTN from a metabolomic perspective has never been done before. This study aimed to figure out the metabolic profiling variations due to oral administration of SQQX in spontaneous hypertensive rat (SHR) models and to find out the optimal dosage of SQQX. SHR in the intervention group orally received SQQX extract of three doses, namely, the low- (5.25 g/kg/d), middle- (10.5 g/kg/d), and high-dosage groups (21 g/kg/d) for 90 days. Rats were sacrificed at the end of the experiment, and their serum was collected for further examination. Serum metabolic profiling variations were analyzed using ultraperformance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC/MS). Results showed that dealing with SQQX remarkably decreased systolic blood pressure (SBP) of SHRs and the high-dosage group was with the best therapeutic effect where a total of 11 metabolites were markedly changed in contrast to the model group. Orthogonal partial least square discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) score plot showed that the 5 groups of serum samples were divided into 5 categories, and the metabolic trajectory of the high-dosage SQQX group was inclined to move to the control group. Glycochenodeoxycholic acid, nicotinamide-N-oxide, and tryptophan betaine might be biomarkers that specifically marked the protective effects of SQQX against high BP mainly involving in cholesterol metabolism, primary bile acid biosynthesis, bile secretion, and nicotinate and nicotinamide metabolism. Aims and objectives: To assess the self‐management activities among rural patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB), and the influence of psychosocial and demographic factors on their self‐management activities. Background: Chronic hepatitis B is a serious public health concern. Rural patients may have limited access to healthcare services. Although self‐management is important for controlling chronic hepatitis B, few studies focus on the self‐management activities among rural patients with chronic hepatitis B. Understanding self‐management activities and related factors in this population are important to design and implement appropriate intervention strategies. Design: A cross‐sectional study. Methods: From June–December 2017, totally 236 rural patients with chronic hepatitis B were recruited from hepatology department in two hospitals in Chongqing, China. The questionnaire included demographic characteristics, Chronic Hepatitis B Self‐Management Scale, Self‐Efficacy for Managing Chronic Disease, and Social Support Rating Scale. The study followed the STROBE checklist. Results: Rural patients with chronic hepatitis B reported poor self‐management activities for the score indexes of symptom management (57.36%), lifestyle management (54.89%), psychosocial coping (54.84%) and disease information management (53.11%) were all below 60%. Self‐efficacy, objective support, subjective support, gender, education level and marital status showed significant effect on self‐management activities. Conclusion: Rural patients with chronic hepatitis B were found to perform insufficient self‐management activities. Self‐efficacy, social support, gender, education level and marital status were identified to influence their self‐management activities. Relevance to clinical practice: Self‐management activities should be promoted among rural patients with chronic hepatitis B. The factors that were identified in this study should be addressed when developing interventions to promote the performance of self‐management activities for rural patients with chronic hepatitis B. Two new labdane-type diterpenes, named viterotulin C (1) and vitexilactone D (2), together with five known diterpenes (3–7), were isolated from the fruits of Vitex trifolia L. var. simplicifolia Cham. Their structures were elucidated by detailed analysis of spectroscopic data. All the compounds were evaluated for their inhibitory effects on nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) pathway in HEK 293 cell line. These compounds presented inhibition on TNF-α-induced NF-κB activation, with inhibition rates ranging from 42.52 ± 10.69% to 68.86 ± 10.76% at the concentration of 50 μM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: In recent years, a growing number of researchers have begun to study fertility awareness (FA). Evidence suggests that college students in their reproductive years have a common understanding of fertility, risk factors for infertility, and assisted reproductive technologies. Therefore, this systematic review summarizes these studies and explores the factors affecting college students' fertility awareness. Methods: A systematic literature search of databases (PUBMED/MEDLINE, Cochrane, Web of Science, Embase, and EBSCO) was conducted from inception to September 2022. Studies that assessed the levels of fertility awareness and factors influencing college students were considered for the review. The qualities of the included studies were evaluated using the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines. This systematic review is reported according to the preferred reporting items for systematic review (PRISMA) guidelines. Results: Twenty-one articles met the eligibility criteria and were included. The preliminary results showed that participants reported low to moderate FA. Female medical students demonstrated higher levels of fertility awareness. The association between age, years of education, and FA was insufficient. Conclusion: The results of the current study suggest that increased FA interventions are warranted, especially for the male, non-medical student population. Governments and educational institutions should strengthen education programs for young students on reproductive health to help them raise awareness about childbirth, and society should provide family support for young people. Erysolin and its two metabolites which were found in blood, ERY-GSH and ERY-NAC, were synthesized by alkylation, amination, isothiocyanation and oxidation reactions from 1-bromo-4-chlorobutane and sodium methyl mercaptide. The reaction temperature, time, feed ratios and purification method were also optimized. The synthesis method was simple, green, safe and low-cost. Erysolin, ERY-GSH and ERY-NAC showed good antitumor activities against MCF-7, HeLa, HepG2, A549 and SW480 cells, which suggested that the antitumor mechanism of erysolin can also be clarified from its metabolites in addition to itself. Background: Neuroinflammation is one of the most important processes in secondary injury after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) has been proven to exert neuroprotective effects in neurodegenerative diseases and stroke by modulating neuroinflammation, and promoting phagocytosis and cell survival. However, the role of TREM2 in TBI has not yet been elucidated. In this study, we are the first to use COG1410, an agonist of TREM2, to assess the effects of TREM2 activation in a murine TBI model.Methods: Adult male wild-type (WT) C57BL/6 mice and adult male TREM2 KO mice were subjected to different treatments. TBI was established by the controlled cortical impact (CCI) method. COG1410 was delivered 1 h after CCI via tail vein injection. Western blot analysis, immunofluorescence, laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI), neurological behaviour tests, brain electrophysiological monitoring, Evans blue assays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and brain water content measurement were performed in this study.Results: The expression of endogenous TREM2 peaked at 3 d after CCI, and it was mainly expressed on microglia and neurons. We found that COG1410 improved neurological functions within 3 d, as well as neurological functions and brain electrophysiological activity at 2 weeks after CCI. COG1410 exerted neuroprotective effects by inhibiting neutrophil infiltration and microglial activation, and suppressing neuroinflammation after CCI. In addition, COG1410 treatment alleviated blood brain barrier (BBB) disruption and brain oedema; furthermore, COG1410 promoted cerebral blood flow (CBF) recovery at traumatic injury sites after CCI. In addition, COG1410 suppressed neural apoptosis at 3 d after CCI. TREM2 activation upregulated p-Akt, p-CREB, BDNF, and Bcl-2 and suppressed TNF-α, IL-1β, Bax, and cleaved caspase-3 at 3 d after CCI. Moreover, TREM2 knockout abolished the effects of COG1410 on vascular phenotypes and microglial states. Finally, the neuroprotective effects of COG1410 were suppressed by TREM2 depletion.Conclusions: Altogether, we are the first to demonstrate that TREM2 activation by COG1410 alleviated neural damage through activation of Akt/CREB/BDNF signalling axis in microglia after CCI. Background: MICAL1 is involved in the malignant processes of several types of cancer; however, the role of MICAL1 in pancreatic cancer (PC) has not been well-characterized. This study aimed to investigate the expression and function of MICAL1 in PC.Methods: RT-qPCR and immunohistochemistry were used to detect MICAL1 expression in PC and adjacent nontumor tissues. Cell Counting Kit-8, EdU, clone formation, wound healing, and Transwell assays as well as animal models were used to investigate the effects of overexpression or inhibition of MICAL1 expression on the proliferation, invasion, and metastasis of PC cells. RNA-seq was used to explore the main pathway underlying the functions of MICAL1. Proteomics, mass spectrometry, and co-immunoprecipitation assays were used to investigate the interaction of proteins with MICAL1. Rescue experiments were conducted to validate these findings.Results: Both MICAL1 mRNA and protein levels were upregulated in PC tissues compared with matched adjacent nontumor tissues. The expression level of MICAL1 was associated with the proliferative and metastatic status of PC. Repression of MICAL1 significantly inhibited PC cell growth, migration, and invasion in vitro and in vivo. RNA sequencing analysis indicated that MICAL1 was closely correlated with the WNT pathway. Overexpression of MICAL1 (1) promoted the phosphorylation of TBC1D1 at the Ser660 site, (2) facilitated the distribution of FZD7 on the cytomembrane, (3) inhibited the degradation of FZD7 in the lysosome, and (4) activated the WNT pathway.Conclusions: MICAL1 was upregulated in PC and involved in stimulating the progression of PC cells by activating the WNT/β-catenin signaling pathway. Objective. Abnormal expression of ABCA1 and ABCG1 in the placenta can elicit lipid metabolism disorder and adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, whether it is associated with preterm delivery remains unclear. Our present study aimed to evaluate the relationship between abnormal expression of ABCA1 or ABCG1 and preterm delivery. Methods. Maternal blood and placental tissues from women with spontaneous deliveries (SPD), iatrogenic deliveries (IPD), and term deliveries (TD) were collected. The lipid content and expression of ABCA1 and ABCG1 were subsequently measured. Results. Compared with IPD and TD groups, the HDL, TD, LDL, and TC levels were lower in the maternal blood but higher (except TC) in the cord blood of the SPD group. The extracellular lipid content in the placentas of the SPD group was also notably lower relative to the IPD and TD groups. Moreover, the protein and mRNA expressions of ABCA1 in the placentas of the SPD group were significantly higher compared with the IPD and TD groups; however, there was no obvious difference among the three groups in the protein and mRNA expressions of ABCG1. Though growing attention has been devoted to examining informant discrepancies of family attributes in social science research, studies that examine how interactions between mother-reported and adolescent-reported family functioning predict adolescent developmental outcomes in underprivileged families are severely lacking. The current study investigated the difference between mothers and adolescents in their reports of family functioning, as well as the relationships between mother-reported and adolescent-reported family functioning and adolescent developmental outcomes in a sample of 432 Chinese single-mother families (mean age of adolescents = 13.7 years, 51.2 % girls, mean age of mothers = 43.5 years, 69.9 % divorced) experiencing economic disadvantage in Hong Kong. Polynomial regression analyses were conducted to assess whether discrepancy in family functioning between mother reports and adolescent reports predicted resilience, beliefs in the future, cognitive competence, self-efficacy and self-determination of adolescents. The results indicated that adolescents reported family functioning more negatively than did their mothers. Polynomial regression analyses showed that the interaction term between mothers' reports and adolescents' reports of family functioning predicted adolescent developmental outcomes in Chinese single-mother families living in poverty. Basically, under poor adolescent-reported family functioning, adolescent development would be relatively better if their mothers reported more positive family functioning. In contrast, under good adolescent-reported family functioning, adolescents expressed better developmental outcomes when mothers reported lower levels of family functioning than those mothers who reported higher levels of family functioning. The findings provide insights on how congruency and discrepancy between informant reports of family functioning would influence adolescent development.
