Purpose: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the difference in the color stability of light-cured and dual-cured resin cements., Materials and Methods: Two separate reviewers used the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and Scielo databases to execute the systematic review. For the analysis, studies that evaluated the color stability of dual-cured and light-cured resin cements over time were used. The random effects model was used in the meta-analysis. Analyses of subgroups were carried out based on the aging technique. The methodological quality of each in vitro study was evaluated in accordance with the parameters of a prior systematic review., Results: From all databases, a total of 2223 articles were retrieved. Following the screening of titles and abstracts, 44 studies were selected for full text review, and a total of 27 articles were used for the qualitative analysis. Finally, 23 articles remained for the qualitative analysis. The majority of studies were labeled as having a medium risk of bias. The global analysis showed that the dual-cure resin cements had considerably greater differences in the color change (p = 0.006). A high heterogeneity index (86%) was found in the analysis., Conclusions: The best available in vitro evidence suggests that dual-polymerizing cement has higher color variation than light-polymerized materials. To reduce the likelihood of color change after the luting of thin ceramic restorations, clinicians should employ light-polymerizable resin cements., (© 2023 by the American College of Prosthodontists.)

Statement of Problem: Although the clinical use of self-adhesive flowable composite resins is convenient, the decision to use flowable or conventional composite resin remains controversial., Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the in vitro bond strength of self-adhesive flowable composite resins to enamel or dentin compared with conventional composite resins using etch-and-rinse or self-etch adhesive systems., Material and Methods: Two independent reviewers performed searches in the PubMed (MEDLINE), Cochrane Wiley, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases for studies reporting on the bond strength of self-adhesive flowable and conventional composite resins to enamel and dentin published from January 2010 up to September 2020. A meta-analysis software program was used for the meta-analysis. Comparisons were conducted using standardized mean differences considering the random-effects model (α=.05)., Results: Twenty-two studies were considered for the meta-analysis. Immediate and long-term bond strength to enamel was improved when a conventional composite resin was used in combination with an adhesive system (P<.001). Bond strength to dentin was improved by using an adhesive system in combination with a conventional composite resin (P<.001)., Conclusions: The bond strength of self-adhesive flowable composite resins is lower than that of conventional composite resins, indicating limited ability to bond to enamel and dentin., (Copyright © 2021 Editorial Council for the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. Despite all the advances in adhesive dentistry, dental bonds are still fragile due to degradation events that start during application of adhesive agents and the inherent hydrolysis of resin-dentin bonds. Here, we combined two outstanding processing methods (electrospinning and cryomilling) to obtain bioactive (antimicrobial and anti-metalloproteinase) fiber-based fillers containing a potent matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitor (doxycycline, DOX). Poly(ε)caprolactone solutions containing different DOX amounts (0, 5, 25, and 50 wt%) were processed via electrospinning, resulting in non-toxic submicron fibers with antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus. The fibers were embedded in a resin blend, light-cured, and cryomilled for the preparation of fiber-containing fillers, which were investigated with antibacterial and in situ gelatin zymography analyzes. The fillers containing 0, 25, and 50 wt% DOX-releasing fibers were added to aliquots of a two-step, etch-and-rinse dental adhesive system. Mechanical strength, hardness, degree of conversion (DC), water sorption and solubility, bond strength to dentin, and nanoleakage analyses were performed to characterize the physico-mechanical, biological, and bonding properties of the modified adhesives. Statistical analyses (ANOVA; Kruskal-Wallis) were used when appropriate to analyze the data (α = 0.05). DOX-releasing fibers were successfully obtained, showing proper morphological architecture, cytocompatibility, drug release ability, slow degradation profile, and antibacterial activity. Reduced metalloproteinases (MMP-2 and MMP-9) activity was observed only for the DOX-containing fillers, which have also demonstrated antibacterial properties against tested bacteria. Adhesive resins modified with DOX-containing fillers demonstrated greater DC and similar mechanical properties as compared to the fiber-free adhesive (unfilled control). Concerning bonding performance to dentin, the experimental adhesives showed similar immediate bond strengths to the control. After 12 months of water storage, the fiber-modified adhesives (except the group consisting of 50 wt% DOX-loaded fillers) demonstrated stable bonds to dentin. Nanoleakage was similar among all groups investigated. DOX-releasing fibers showed promising application in developing novel dentin adhesives with potential therapeutic properties and MMP inhibition ability; antibacterial activity against relevant oral pathogens, without jeopardizing the physico-mechanical characteristics; and bonding performance of the adhesive.

Purpose: To evaluate the in vitro bond strength of universal adhesive systems to indirect substrates., Material and Methods: Two reviewers performed a literature search up to March 2018 in seven databases: PubMed, Web of Science, SciELO, Scopus, LILACS, IBECS, and BBO. The review included studies that compared the bond strength of universal adhesives and well-established material-specific primers to indirect substrates: lithium disilicate ceramic, yttrium-stabilized zirconium dioxide ceramic, leucite-reinforced ceramic, feldspathic porcelain, polymer infiltrated ceramic material, resin composite or metal alloys. Analyses were carried out using RevMan 5.3.5. A global comparison was performed with the standardized mean difference using a random-effects models at a significance level of p < 0.05., Results: A total of 45 studies were included in the qualitative analysis, and the meta-analysis was performed with 42 studies. Bond strength to glass-based ceramics and alloys was improved with the use of a specific-primer as separate step before the bonding procedures (lithium disilicate, p < 0.001; alloys, p < 0.001). The bond strength to zirconium substrates was improved with the use of universal adhesives (p < 0.001). For bond strength to composite resin as indirect substrate, universal adhesives performed in a manner similar to that of the material-specific primer (p = 0.11)., Conclusions: The clinical procedure of luting zirconia and resin composite restorations could be simplified by using single-bottle universal adhesives. However, the ability of universal adhesives to achieve an adequate and durable bond to glass-based ceramics and alloys appears to be limited., (© 2020 by the American College of Prosthodontists.)

Purpose: To investigate the mechanical performance and fracture reliability of new generation, bulk-fill resin composites of different viscosities., Methods: Forty sound maxillary premolars were prepared into Class I cavities comprised of 5 mm width × 5 mm length × 5 mm thickness. The teeth were randomly allocated into four groups (n = 10) according to the restorative material: Negative control - without restoration; Positive control - conventional resin composite (Opallis; FGM) was applied using increments of up to 2.0 mm-thick; Bulk-Regular - bulk-fill resin composite of regular viscosity (Opus Bulk Fill; FGM) was applied using a single increment of 5 mm-thick; and Bulk-Flow - a low-viscosity bulk-fill resin composite (Opus Bulk Fill Flow; FGM) was applied as the first increment with ∼3.5 mm-thick, followed by two final increments of Opallis (∼1.5 mm-thick). The teeth were stored at 37 °C, for 24 h, and submitted to a mechanical testing machine (DL500; EMIC) under a compressive loading. Work of fracture (W f ) was also obtained. All data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey (α = 5%). Reliability of restorations and probability of failure were analyzed by Weibull analysis., Results: The non-restored teeth showed the weakest behavior of the study. All the restored groups demonstrated similar mechanical properties to each other (p ≥ 0.242). The positive and negative controls failed exclusively within the cohesiveness of enamel/dentin, whereas the bulk-fill-based restorations showed a mixture of cohesive and mixed failures. The restored groups showed an overall similar reliability, although the Bulk-Regular group demonstrated greater characteristic strength than the positive control., Conclusion: The novel bulk-fill resin composites of low and regular viscosities show promising application in the restoration of Class I cavities in premolars, demonstrating similar mechanical performance and reliability as compared with restorations prepared using conventional resin composites. This study evaluated the three-year lifespan of the bond to dentin of experimental self-etch adhesives containing benzodioxole derivatives - 1,3-benzodioxole (BDO) and piperonyl alcohol (PA) - as co-initiator alternative to amines. Adhesive resins were formulated using Bis-GMA, TEGDMA, HEMA, camphorquinone and different co-initiators: BDO, PA or ethyl 4-dimethylamino benzoate (EDAB - amine). An experimental self-etch primer was used to complete the two-step, self-etch adhesive system. Clearfil SE Bond (CSE) was used as commercial reference. Bond strength to human dentin was assessed by microtensile bond strength (µTBS) test, and failure mode was classified. Morphology of the dentin bonding interface was assessed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Irrespective of the dental adhesives evaluated, µTBS was higher after 24 hours compared with that after 1.5 and 3 years (p ≤ 0.001). However, adhesives with BDO and PA as co-initiators showed significantly higher bond strength than the bonding resin with EDAB (p ≤ 0.002), independent of the time evaluated. The commercial adhesive CSE showed similar bond strength compared with the other groups (p ≥ 0.05). Mixed failures were mainly observed after 24 hours, while adhesive failures were more frequently observed after 1.5 and 3 years. No notable differences in homogeneity and continuity along the bonded interfaces were detected among the materials in the SEM analysis. In conclusion, benzodioxole derivatives are feasible alternative co-initiators to tertiary amine in camphorquinone-based self-etching dental adhesive formulations.

This study evaluated the shear bond strength (SBS) of self-adhesive resin cements (SARCs) to dentin and their physical-chemical properties. Five commercial SARCs were evaluated [SmartCem®2 - DENTSPLY (SC2); BisCem® - Bisco (BC); SeT PP® - SDI (SeT); Relyx U100® - 3M ESPE (U100) and YCEM® SA - Yller (YCEM)]. The SARCs were evaluated for SBS to dentin (n = 10) after 24 h, 6 months, and 12 months. The dentin demineralization caused by acidic monomers was observed by SEM, and pH-neutralization of eluate was observed for 24 h. Degree of conversion (DC), rate of polymerization (Rp), flexural strength (FS), and elastic modulus (E) were evaluated. Immediate SBS of SC2, SET, U100, and YCEM were statistically higher than that of BC (p < 0.001). After 12 months, all SARCs showed reduced SBS values and U100 showed values similar to those of SET and YCEM, and higher than those of BC and SC2 (p = 0.001). Demineralization pattern of SARCs was similar. At 24h, all SARCs showed no differences in the pH-value, except BC and U100 (p < 0.001). YCEM showed the highest Rp. U100, YCEM, and SC2 showed statistically higher FS (p<0.001) and E (p < 0.001) when compared with SET and BC. U100 and YCEM showed the best long-term bonding irrespective of the storage period. A significant reduction in SBS was found for all groups after 12 months. SBS was not shown to be correlated with physical-chemical properties, and appeared to be material-dependent. The polymerization profile suggested that an increased time of light activation, longer than that recommended by manufacturers, would be necessary to optimize DC of SARCs.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the hypothesis that replacing 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) for surfactant dimethacrylates (SD) does not affect the immediate and long-term microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of experimental two-step self-etch HEMA-free adhesive systems applied on dentin., Materials and Methods: Five experimental HEMA-free two-step self-etching systems containing different SD (ethoxylated bisphenol A diglycidyl dimethacrylate (Bis-EMA 10, B10), Bis-EMA 30 (B30), poly-ethyleneglycol (400) dimethacrylate (PEG 400, P400), PEG 1000 (P1000), and PEG 400 urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA) (UP400)) and a HEMA-containing system (control) (HA) were formulated. Specimens were subjected to the μTBS test after 24 h and 6 and 12 months of storage. Data (in megapascals) were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests (α = 0.05)., Results: Medians of the μTBS data after 24 h of storage are: HA = 57.2(A), B10 = 26.2(BC), B30 = 24.0(C), P400 = 32.6(BC), P1000 = 37.3(B), and UP400 = 57.9(A); after 6 months are: HA = 47.9(A), B10 = 18.5(B), B30 = 7.8(C), P400 = 16.1(B), P1000 = 14.6(BC), and UP400 = 51.6(A); and after 12 months are: HA = 31.2(A), B10 = 15.2(B), B30 = 9.0(B), P400 = 9.1(B), P1000 = 13.3(B), and UP400 = 35.7(A). Between the HEMA-free groups, the adhesive system formulated with PEG 400 UDMA produced similar μTBS to the HEMA-containing group. Also, the storage of specimens decreased the μTBS (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: Replacing HEMA for PEG 400 UDMA in an adhesive system formulation generated a satisfactory μTBS to dentin., Clinical Relevance: Surfactant dimethacrylates have a potential use in the development of HEMA-free self-etching adhesive systems, which are more chemically stable.

We evaluated the effect of activation mode (immediate or delayed light activation vs. no light activation) on diametral tensile strength (DTS), elastic modulus, ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and degree of conversion (DC) in dual-cured resin cements. Three resin cements were evaluated: Enforce, RelyX ARC, and Panavia F. The mixed cements were inserted into circular molds for the DTS test and into dumbbell-shaped molds for the UTS test. Inside the molds, the cements were light-activated either immediately or after 5 min (delayed light activation). If no light activation was performed, the materials were protected from light exposure (control). The DTS and UTS tests were performed until fracture. The elastic modulus was calculated using data from the DTS test, and DC was evaluated 24 h after manipulation using near-infrared spectroscopy. Data for each variable were individually analyzed by two-way ANOVA and the post-hoc Tukey test (α = 0.05). Regarding DTS, activation mode influenced only Panavia Fspecimens, which had the lowest DTS values in the absence of light activation. Activation mode did not influence the elastic modulus or UTS of any resin cement evaluated. Immediate light activation yielded higher DC values as compared with the absence of light activation.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of variations in 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) concentrations in an experimental comonomer blend on degree of conversion, water sorption, solubility, and ultimate tensile strength of adhesive resin., Materials and Methods: The effect of HEMA content (0, 15, 30, and 50%wt - control, G15, G30, and G50 groups, respectively) was tested in an experimental comonomer blend of bis-GMA, bis-EMA, TEG-DMA, and HEMA. The degree of conversion, polymerization rate, ultimate tensile strength, water sorption, and solubility of the adhesive resin blends were determined., Results: At 40 s of light activation time, groups G30 and G50 showed a decrease of 30% and 61%, respectively, in degree of conversion compared to control. Water sorption and solubility differed for all groups, and was statistically higher in G50. For ultimate tensile strength, the control and G15 groups showed statistically higher values than the other groups (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: Higher HEMA content increases dental adhesive resin degradation.

Objectives: This study evaluated the effect of light activation (absence, immediate, or delayed) on conversion kinetics and polymerization stress of three commercial dual-cured resin cements (Enforce, RelyX ARC, and Panavia F)., Methods: Degree of conversion (DC) was monitored for 30 minutes using real-time near–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The cement was mixed, placed on the spectrometer sample holder, and light activated either immediately or after five minutes (delayed light activation). When no light activation was performed, the materials were protected from light exposure (control). DC was evaluated at five and 30 minutes postmixture. Maximum rates of polymerization (Rp(max)) were obtained from the first derivative of the DC vs time curve. Polymerization stress was monitored for 30 minutes in 1-mm-thick specimens inserted between two cylinders attached to a universal testing machine. Data were submitted to analysis of variance/Tukey tests (α=0.05)., Results: Immediate light activation promoted the highest DC at five minutes. At 30 minutes, only RelyX ARC did not present a significant difference in DC between activation modes. Enforce and Panavia F presented higher Rp(max) for immediate and delayed light-activation, respectively. RelyX ARC showed similar Rp(max) for all activation modes. The absence of light activation resulted in the lowest stress followed by delayed light activation, while immediate light activation led to the highest values. RelyX ARC showed higher stress than Enforce, while the stress of Panavia F was similar to that of the others., Conclusion: Delayed light activation reduced the polymerization stress of the resin cements tested without jeopardizing DC.

In the current study, the degree of conversion (DC) of bonding agents photoactivated using QTH or LED light-curing units (LCUs) was evaluated by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy with an attenuated total reflectance (ATR) device. Four LCUs were evaluated: one QTH (Optilux 501; Demetron Kerr) and three LEDs: Radii Cal (SDI), Elipar FreeLight 2 (3M ESPE) and Bluephase (Ivoclar Vivadent). Two etch-and-rinse (Scotchbond Multi-Purpose-SBMP and Single Bond 2-SB2) and two self-etch adhesives (Clearfil SE Bond-CSE, and Clearfil S3 Bond-CS3) were tested. For SBMP and CSE, the primer was not used. The irradiance and spectral emission of the LCUs were obtained with a radiometer and spectrometer. The materials were placed onto the ATR cell as thin films, the solvent was evaporated (when necessary) and photoactivation was carried out for 20 seconds. The DC (%) was evaluated after five minutes (n = 5). The data were statistically analyzed (p < 0.05). The irradiance for Optilux, Radii, FreeLight 2 and Bluephase was 760, 600, 1000 and 1100 mW.cm(-2), respectively. The wavelength of emission for Optilux was between 375 and 520 nm (peak at 496 nm), while for Radii, it was between 420 and 520 nm (peak at 467 nm). Freelight 2 presented an emission spectrum between 415 and 520 nm, and for Bluephase, it was between 410 and 530 nm, both having a peak at 454 nm. SB2 generally showed higher DC compared with the other bonding agents. When cured using the QTH unit, the DC results were SB2 = CS3 > CSE > SBMP; for all LEDs, the DC results showed SB2 > CSE > SBMP > CS3. For SB2, the highest DC was observed when the material was cured with Radii, while there were no significant differences among the other LCUs. CSE and CS3 showed higher DC when cured using the QTH unit, but similar results were observed among the LEDs. For SBMP, no significant differences among the LCUs were detected. In conclusion, the combination bonding agent vs curing unit had a significant effect on DC, mainly for the self-etch adhesives.

Resin luting agents in which bisphenol-A glycidyl dimethacrylate (Bis-GMA) and/or triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) are replaced with increasing amounts of bisphenol-A ethoxylated dimethacrylate are prepared. Degree of conversion (DC), diametral tensile strength (DTS), Young's modulus (YM), Knoop hardness (KHN), film thickness (FT), water sorption (W(sp) ), and solubility are evaluated. Regression analyses investigate the substitution of each monomer. The most appreciable differences are detected when TEGDMA is replaced: decreased DC, DTS, and W(sp), and increased YM, KHN, and FT. For substitution of Bis-GMA, the only significant differences are reduced W(sp) and increased YM. An ideal formulation of resin cement would make use of the three monomers.

Objective: To evaluate the influence of tetrahydrofuran (THF) on the resin-to-dentin microtensile bond strength (microTBS) after water storage, for 24h and 6 months, and to compare its behavior with that of traditional solvents., Methods: Seven versions of monomer/solvent mixtures (primers) were prepared using the following solvent and water combinations: (1) THF, (2) acetone, (3) ethanol, (4) water, (5) THF/water, (6) acetone/water and (7) ethanol/water. An experimental adhesive resin was also synthesized to compare adhesive systems with the different primers. Forty-two bovine incisors, randomly separated into seven groups, had their superficial coronal dentin exposed. After acid-etching and rinsing, the excess water was removed from the surface with absorbent paper. Each experimental primer was applied with agitation (30s) followed by a mild air stream (10s). The experimental adhesive resin was applied and light-activated (20s). Resin composite restorations were constructed incrementally. Restored teeth were stored in distilled water at 37 degrees C (24h) and sectioned to obtain sticks with an area of 0.5mm(2). Half the specimens were subjected to the microTBS test immediately after being cut and the other half were tested after 6 months of water storage. Data (MPa) were analyzed by two-way ANOVA (solvent type and storage time as factors) and Tukey-Kramer's test at alpha=0.05., Results: Factors and interaction showed a statistical effect. After 6 months storage, acetone groups and primers containing THF showed similar microTBS to initial means., Significance: THF seems to be a promising solvent for use in dental adhesive systems, maintaining bond strength on dentin substrate after storage.

This study evaluated the rate of polymerization (R(p)) and degree of conversion (DC) of Panavia F when self- or dual-activated, and the influence of either using or not using a primer containing co-initiators (ED Primer) mixed with the material. The conversion reaction was monitored using real-time infrared spectroscopy with an attenuated total reflectance device. The cement was mixed, put onto the device and irradiated for 20 s (dual-cured). A self-cured group was also prepared. Similarly, dual- and self-cured groups were evaluated after mixing ED Primer with the cement. The DC was monitored for 1 h and the R(p) was calculated. For the dual-cured mode, the most significant effect of ED Primer was to reduce the R(p)(max). For the self-cured mode, the primer was shown to be essential for polymerization of Panavia F: without ED Primer, the reaction started only after approximately 500 s, with a final DC of 50%, whereas a continuous increase in conversion was observed for the group mixed with ED Primer, with a final DC of 74%. The ED primer is essential for proper polymerization of Panavia F; the cement becomes independent of the light when the primer is used.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the Knoop hardness after 15 min and 24 h of different shades of a dual-cured resin-based cement after indirect photoactivation (ceramic restoration) with 2 light-curing units (LCUs). The resin cement Variolink II (Ivoclar Vivadent) shade XL, A2, A3 and opaque were mixed with the catalyst paste and inserted into a black Teflon mold (5 mm diameter x 1 mm high). A transparent strip was placed over the mold and a ceramic disc (Duceram Plus, shade A3) was positioned over the resin cement. Light-activation was performed through the ceramic for 40 s using quartz-tungsten-halogen (QTH) (XL 2500; 3M ESPE) or light-emitting diode (LED) (Ultrablue Is, DMC) LCUs with power density of 615 and 610 mW/cm(2), respectively. The Koop hardness was measured using a microhardness tester HMV 2 (Shimadzu) after 15 min or 24 h. Four indentations were made in each specimen. Data were subjected to ANOVA and Tukey's test (alpha=0.05). The QTH LCU provided significantly higher (p<0.05) KHN values than the LED LCU. When the post-cure times were compared for the same shade, QTH and LED at 24 h provided significantly higher (p<0.05) KHN values than at 15 min. It may be concluded that the Knoop hardness was generally dependent on the LCU and post-cure time. The opaque shade of the resin cement showed lower Knoop hardness than the other shades for both LCUs and post-cure times.

Objective: In this study we investigated the degree of conversion (DC) of a dual-cured resin luting agent beneath a ceramic of different thickness., Material and Methods: The luting material (RelyX) was photo-activated for 40s through ceramic disks (Empress Esthetic, 0.7, 1.4, or 2mm thick). Dual (DUC) and chemically cured (CC) control groups were obtained. A delayed exposure (DE) procedure was tested in which the material was light-activated after 5 min without using ceramic. DC (%) was measured using infrared spectroscopy at 40 s, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 min. Light irradiance and spectrum transmitted through ceramic were measured using a power meter and a spectrometer., Results: A decrease in irradiance was detected with increasing ceramic thickness, but no alteration in the emission profile was observed. At 10 min, all groups showed DC higher than at 40s. No significant differences were detected for DUC compared with the groups indirectly activated through the ceramic disks. Generally, CC showed the lowest DC values. No significant effect in DC was detected for DE after 10 min. A significant increase in DC was generally detected only up to 4 min., Conclusions: The luting agent was dependent on light exposure and time to obtain improved DC. Neither the indirect activation nor the DE procedure significantly influenced the final DC.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the kinetics of conversion of Scotchbond Multi-purpose Plus (3M ESPE, St Paul, MN) and Prime&Bond NT (Dentsply De Trey, Konstanz, Germany) used in light-cured, self-cured, or dual-cured versions. The adhesive systems were used in the light-cured version (without the use of chemical initiator) or mixed with its respective chemical initiator either with light activation (dual-cured) or not (self-cured). The degree of conversion (DC) was monitored as a function of time during 5 minutes with a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer equipped with an attenuated total reflectance device. Light-cured and dual-cured modes of Scotchbond Multi-purpose Plus presented the highest DC at 5 minutes. The addition of the self-cure activator (dual-cured mode) to Prime&Bond NT reduced the DC. For the self-cured versions, only the Scotchbond Multi-purpose Plus presented any polymerization reaction at 5 minutes. For the two bonding systems tested, it appears that light curing of the adhesive is important in order to reach a high DC in the first moments after the bonding procedure.

This study investigates the in-depth polymerization of dual-cured resin cement (Enforce; Dentsply, shades A2, B1, and opaque). Cylindrical specimens are obtained by photo-activation through ceramic. Control samples are light-cured without using ceramic. Samples are tested after 15 min or 24 h. Knoop hardness readings are made at 100, 300, 500, and 700 microm depth. Hardness is generally dependent on the mode of activation and post-cure time. Shades A2 and B1 show higher hardness values than opaque resin. Hardness at 100 microm is higher than at 700 microm. A linear relationship between hardness and depth is observed.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the Knoop hardness of a dual-cured resin-based luting cement irradiated with different light sources as well energy density through a ceramic sample. Three light-curing unit (LCUs) were tested: tungsten halogen light (HAL), light-emitting diode (LED) and xenon plasma-arc (PAC) lamp. Disc-shaped specimens were fabricated from a resin-based cement (Enforce). Three energy doses were used by modifying the irradiance (I) of each LCU and the irradiation time (T): 24 Jcm(-2) (I/2x2T), 24 Jcm(-2) (IxT) and 48 Jcm(-2) (Ix2T). Energy doses were applied through a 2.0-mm-thick ceramic sample (Duceram Plus). Three groups underwent direct irradiation over the resin cement with the different LCUs and a chemically-activated group served as a control. Thirteen groups were tested (n=10). Knoop hardness number (KHN) means were obtained from cross-sectional areas. Two-way ANOVA and the Holm-Sidak method were used for statistical comparisons of activation mode and energy doses (alpha=5%). Application of 48 J.cm(-2) energy dose through the ceramic using LED (50.5+/-2.8) and HAL (50.9+/-3.7) produced significantly higher KHN means (p<0.05) than the control (44.7+/-3.8). LED showed statistically similar performance to HAL. Only HAL showed a relationship between the increase of LCU energy dose and hardness increase.

This study investigated the relationship between the irradiance transmitted through ceramic and the bond strength of a resin cement to dentin. After application of an adhesive system, elastomer molds with cylindrical orifices (1.2 mm in diameter) were placed onto bovine dentin surfaces and filled with a photoactivated luting agent (Enforce; Dentsply Caulk). Light-activation was performed through a 0.6-mm-thick ceramic disc using different intensities: 250, 400, 550, 700, or 850 mW/cm(2). Control specimens were irradiated without ceramic (1050 mW/cm(2)). The radiant exposure was kept at 30 J/cm(2). Light spectral distribution was analyzed with a spectrometer. Microshear test was conducted and modes of failure were classified under SEM. Bond strength data were analyzed with ANOVA and Student-Newman-Keuls' test (alpha < or = 0.05), and failure scores with the Kruskal-Wallis test (alpha < or = 0.05). A linear regression model assessed the relationship between irradiance and bond strength. Groups light-cured at 250 and 400 mW/cm(2) presented lower bond strengths than groups activated at 850 and 1050 mW/cm(2). The linear regression showed that a decrease in light irradiance predicts a decrease in bond strength (r(2) = 0.955; p = 0.004). A predominance of mixed failures was observed. No significant alteration in the spectral wavelengths was observed. Despite the constant energy dose, the bond strength was dependent upon the irradiance level.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to synthesize an acidic monomer using an alternative synthetic pathway and to evaluate the influence of the acidic monomer concentration on the microtensile bond strength to dentin., Methods: The intermediary 5-hydroxypentyl methacrylate (HPMA) was synthesized through methacrylic acid esterification with 1,5-pentanediol, catalyzed by p-toluenesulfonic acid. To displace the reaction balance, the water generated by esterification was removed by three different methods: anhydrous sodium sulfate; molecular sieves or azeotropic distillation. In the next step, a phosphorus pentoxide (4.82 mmol) slurry was formed in cold acetone and 29 mmol of HPMA was slowly added by funnel addition. After the reaction ended, solvent was evaporated and the product was characterized by 1HNMR and FTIR. The phosphate monomer was introduced in a self-etch primer at concentrations of 0, 15, 30, 50, 70 and 100 wt%. Clearfil SE Bond was used as commercial reference. Microtensile bond strength to dentin was evaluated 24h after the bonding procedures, followed by fracture analysis (n=20). Data was submitted to ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test., Results: The highest yield was obtained (62%) when azeotropic distillation was used, while the reaction with molecular sieves was not feasible. The phosphoric moiety attachment to the monomer was successfully performed with a quantitative yield that reached around 100%. The acidic monomer concentration significantly affected the bond strength and the highest mean (55.1+/-12.8 MPa) was obtained when 50% of acidic monomer was used., Conclusion: The synthesis pathways described in the present study appear to be a viable alternative for developing phosphate monomers.

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the microleakage of seven adhesive systems on two substrates (enamel and dentin)., Methods and Materials: Class V cavities were performed in buccal and lingual surfaces of 56 bovine incisors. The cervical margin was located in dentin and the incisal margin in enamel. The specimens were randomly divided into seven groups (n=16), according to the adhesive system employed: Single Bond; Excite; One Step Plus; Gluma One Bond; Magic Bond; One Up Bond F; and One Coat Bond. The cavities were incrementally filled with a hybrid composite Filtek Z250 and polymerized with a XL 3000 light curing unit. After polishing, the specimens were submitted to thermal cycling followed by dye immersion. Leakage was evaluated under magnification (40X) based on a standard ranking. Data were subjected to statistical analysis (Kruskal-Wallis)., Results: Enamel margins exhibited lower leakage than dentin margins (p<0.01). The majority of the specimens were leakage-free and materials performed similarly. Conversely, in dentin most of the specimens exhibited the highest leakage degree and significant differences among materials (p<0.05) were found, with Excite exhibiting the lowest leakage degree. It was concluded enamel provided better sealing and the adhesive system was a significant factor only in dentin.

The sealing and bonding characteristics of luting cements may be affected by the application of desensitizers containing ingredients that induce chemical interaction with dentin organic matrix. This study evaluated the effect of different desensitizers on the immediate and long-term shear bond strength (SBS) of a self-adhesive resin cement (SARC) to dentin. Healthy bovine dentin specimens were used for the study. Gluma® Desensitizer, Desensibilize Nano P®, and Soothe® desensitizer were used in study groups, while the control group did not receive any treatment. Next, SARC (RelyXTM U200) in cylindrical mold was applied to the sample surface. All specimens were stored at 37 °C for 24 h or six months and tested for SBS. Additionally, water contact angle was measured using an optical tensiometer. Results were analyzed by analysis of variance and Student-t tests (p ˂ 0.05). Application of the different types of desensitizers had no significant influence on immediate or long-term SBS of SARC to dentin (p > 0.05). Differences for water contact angle were not statistically significant among the tested groups (p = 0.450). Within the limitations of the present study, it can be concluded that the application of the different types of desensitizers had no significant influence on the SBS of a SARC to dentin. Two reviewers performed a literature search up to December 2016, without restriction of the year of publication, in seven databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, SciELO, LILACS, IBECS, and BBO. Study selection Only laboratory studies that evaluated polymerization shrinkage stress by direct testing were included. Pilot studies, reviews and in vitro studies that evaluated polymerization shrinkage stress by indirect methods (e.g., microleakage or cuspal deflection measurements), finite elemental analysis, or theoretical and mathematical models were excluded. Of the 6113 eligible articles, 62 studies were included in the qualitative analysis, and the meta-analysis was performed with 58 studies. The composition strategy was subdivided according to the modified part of the material: filler phase, coupling agent, or resin matrix. A global comparison was performed with random-effects models (α = 0.05). The only subgroup that did not show a statistical difference between the alternative strategy and the control was ‘the use of alternative photo-initiators’ (p = 0.29). Conclusion Modification of the resin matrix made the largest contribution to minimizing stress development. The technology used for decreasing stress in the formulation of low-shrinkage and bulk-fill materials was shown to be a promising application for reducing and controlling stress development. Of the 6.113 eligible articles, 36 studies were included in the qualitative analysis, and the meta-analysis was performed with 25 studies. A global comparison was performed with random-effects models (α = 0.05). The strategies were subdivided as follows: the use of an alternative technique protocol of placing the material inside the tooth cavity; the modification of the irradiation intensity or total energy delivered to the material; the use of an alternative light-curing source; or the use of an alternative photo-activation mode. All alternative strategies showed statistically significant differences when compared with their respective controls (p < 0.05). Conclusion The use of alternative light-curing sources contributed more to minimizing stress development than placing the material by means of an alternative technique protocol or by modifying the irradiant intensity or total energy delivered to the material during photo-activation. Moreover, the use of an alternative photo-activation mode (intermittent light, exponential, soft-start or pulse delay modes) was shown to be an effective strategy for reducing and controlling stress development in resin-based dental materials. This study evaluated the shear bond strength (SBS) of self-adhesive resin cements (SARCs) to dentin and their physical-chemical properties. Five commercial SARCs were evaluated [SmartCem®2 - DENTSPLY (SC2); BisCem® - Bisco (BC); SeT PP® - SDI (SeT); Relyx U100® - 3M ESPE (U100) and YCEM® SA - Yller (YCEM)]. The SARCs were evaluated for SBS to dentin (n = 10) after 24 h, 6 months, and 12 months. The dentin demineralization caused by acidic monomers was observed by SEM, and pH-neutralization of eluate was observed for 24 h. Degree of conversion (DC), rate of polymerization (Rp), flexural strength (FS), and elastic modulus (E) were evaluated. Immediate SBS of SC2, SET, U100, and YCEM were statistically higher than that of BC (p < 0.001). After 12 months, all SARCs showed reduced SBS values and U100 showed values similar to those of SET and YCEM, and higher than those of BC and SC2 (p = 0.001). Demineralization pattern of SARCs was similar. At 24h, all SARCs showed no differences in the pH-value, except BC and U100 (p < 0.001). YCEM showed the highest Rp. U100, YCEM, and SC2 showed statistically higher FS (p<0.001) and E (p < 0.001) when compared with SET and BC. U100 and YCEM showed the best long-term bonding irrespective of the storage period. A significant reduction in SBS was found for all groups after 12 months. SBS was not shown to be correlated with physical-chemical properties, and appeared to be material-dependent. The polymerization profile suggested that an increased time of light activation, longer than that recommended by manufacturers, would be necessary to optimize DC of SARCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
