In this paper, we devise a framework for obtaining the optimal ordering policy in a single location, continuous-review inventory system with arbitrary inter-demand times. We show that it is optimal to order at demand arrival epochs only if the inter-demand time has a constant or decreasing failure rate. When the inter-demand time has an increasing failure rate, we show that the optimal policy is to delay the order. We then extend this policy to multi-echelon distribution systems consisting of one supplier and many retailers. Both decentralized and centralized systems are considered. We derive expressions and procedures for the evaluation of the total cost and the computation of optimal delay in all the considered settings. More importantly, we study the impact of our delay policy in all the settings. The numerical results indicate that for the single-location model, the optimal delay can significantly reduce the total cost. Results from the single-location model can be applied to the decentralized multi-echelon system, where the upstream supplier acts as a single-location system. The supplier order delay can also have a significant impact (either positive or negative) on the retailers' total cost as well as the system's total costs. Finally, the impact of supplier order delay is minimal in the centralized multi-echelon setting. We offer an intuitive explanation for this observation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PAPER , *DIGITAL media , *SMART materials , *RESEARCH , *RETAIL industry - Abstract
This article focuses on the emergence of digital paper or epaper. The foundation of epaper is based upon the idea that it is easier for your eyes to read text from reflective surface than backlit displays. The broader, long-term goal is to develop a display technology that parallels paper in its readability, familiarity and portability while incorporating the ability to update the display wirelessly. The U.S. Army has established the Army Flexible Display Center to test the variety of existing epaper technology possibilities. Early in 2004 Gyricon announced that it had begun trial testing of its rigid-backed SmartPaper technology for use in grocery and retail stores. Replacing static pricing and unintelligent cash registers, Gyricon's system allows stores to update price displays wirelessly, simultaneously doing the same at the checkout lanes.

The article reports that according to Lindsay Hicks, IT/IS director of Sunflower Farmers Market, over the past year, Sunflower has used 50% less receipt paper at the checkouts of 10 stores, saving 40% in paper costs. The reason for the drop-off in receipt-paper consumption is that receipts are now printed on both sides of the paper. This happened with the environmentally friendly RealPOS Two-Sided Thermal Printer, from NCR, Dayton, Ohio.

This article presents information about a shop that sells papier-mache animals. The brightly colored papier-mache animals at the shop Form + Function are a welcome addition to the shop's ultra-sleek furnishings. The creatures are more like folk art meets. They include vertically challenged dachshunds, bowtie-sporting snakes and wide-eyed 8-inch-tall Kiwi birds. The shop's owner Helmut Fortense found his fauna at an art fair in Germany. The creatures are priced from $35 to $300, and they won't make a mess on one's renewable-bamboo floor.
