The objective of this work deals with the realization of high O2-barrier blown films based on novel biodegradable blends of Polybutylene succinate (PBS) and Poly-vinyl alcohol (PVOH) for food packaging applications. Blends at different PBS/PVOH weight ratios (100/0, 80/20, 60/40, 0/100 wt%) were produced and their processability and miscibility was preliminary assessed by means of dynamic shear rheological tests. Afterwards, blown films were realized and then characterized in terms of chemical properties and oxygen barrier performance. The results revealed that, although immiscible, polymers in the blend show some degree of interaction. Moreover, as the concentration of PVOH in the films increased, a significant decrease in oxygen permeability was obtained with respect to the neat PBS film, up to 42% for the PBS/PVOH 60/40 sample. The findings of this study highlighted the promising perspectives of these films as sustainable packaging for sensitive foods with high O2-barrier requirements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is characterized by a thick, sticky mucus responsible for both airway obstruction and resistance to drug diffusion, reducing the effectiveness of drug delivery to the lung. Studies of drug-mucus interaction may be a crucial step in therapeutic management of CF. In the present research, the effect of a saline solution of sodium bicarbonate (100mM) on sputum viscosity and the permeation properties of ketoprofen lysinate (Klys) from a previously developed dry powder inhaler were evaluated. Methods: Rheological measurements were performed using an ARES rotational rheometer (Rheometrics, Inc.) with a parallel plate geometry. The gel fraction, separated from the liquid phase of various sputum samples from CF patients was loaded onto the plate. The elastic (G') and the viscous (G'') moduli, tan δ (ratio of G'' to G') and η* (complex viscosity) were evaluated as frequency-dependent parameters. Drug permeation across CF sputum from dry powders was studied by means of Franz-type vertical diffusion cells. The experiments were conducted on untreated sputum and on sputum treated with bicarbonate. Results: Rheological studies showed that the elastic modulus (G') was always greater than the viscous modulus (G'') and the viscosity decreased with increasing frequency, as for pseudo-plastic fluids. Bicarbonate caused a downward shift of both the elastic and viscous moduli, with a reduction in complex viscosity. As to drug permeation, the untreated sputum slowed down drug dissolution and permeation compared to buffer permeability (control). Permeation studies across CF sputum treated with bicarbonate showed higher Klys dissolution/ permeation than untreated sputum. Conclusions: The interesting results confirm the previously reported bicarbonate. effectiveness in CF; this weak base seems to act by decreasing high viscosity of the CF bronchial secretion and, potentially, resulting in better mucus clearance and in fighting pulmonary infections. In this work the relationships between system composition, polymer-organoclay interaction, morphology and rheological response, under shear, and elongational flow, of different melt compounded polylactic acid (PLA)/organoclay nanocomposites are investigated, with the aim to properly select the better organoclay for a well-specified PLA grade and processing technology. Polylactide nanocomposites are prepared using two commercial polylactide grades (PLA 4032D and PLA 2003D) and two different organomodified montmorillonites (Cloisite 30B and Nanofil SE3010). FTIR analysis evidences the occurrence of stronger polymer/organoclay interactions for the system PLA4032D+C30B, resulting in a higher clay dispersion and exfoliation levels. Moreover, rheological tests at low shear rates show that, if PLA 2003D is used as polymer matrix (differing from PLA4032D by the presence of a high molecular weight tail), a better dispersed nanomorphology can be obtained with Nanofil SE3010, characterized by a double d-spacing compared to Cloisite 30B, despite the higher polar character of this latter nanofiller. On the other hand, elongational rheological measurements evidence for NSE3010-based hybrids a marked extensional thickening, whilst the stronger polar interactions between the phases in both the polylactide grades filled with C30B, determine increments in elongational viscosity, but inhibit the strain hardening behavior. The presence of hydrogen bonds in the chemical structure of polymers promotes and stabilises the crystalline phase. For liquid crystalline (LC) polymers, the side insertion of aliphatic units to the mesogenic unit is a suitable artifice to decrease the crystalline stability, without significantly affecting the stability of the LC phases. Here, we report on the synthesis of a LC homo-polyurethane with high hydrogen bond concentration along the chain and bearing an n-pentyl side-chain. Rheological behaviour, thermal analysis, and X-ray diffraction show that the stable LC phase is the nematic. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
