Background: Evolutionary changes in human rib cage morphology rendered it prone to pathologies like Scheuermann's kyphosis (SK). However, the impact of SK on rib cage morphology is unclear., Purpose: This study aimed to examine differences in rib cage morphology (e.g., ribs and sternum) between SK patients and a control group., Methods: Measurements of the vertebral body, transverse process angle, sternum, and rib size were taken from the skeletons of SK patients (76) and a control group (96). Statistical tests were carried out to examine differences between the study and control groups and between the right and left sides. Correlations were obtained to examine the associations between the extent of the kyphosis (kyphosis angle) and rib cage variables., Results: The SK group yielded significantly longer and flatter ribs than the control group in both sexes. However, males had the largest differences in the 9th rib and females in the upper ribs (5-7). Inconsistency in symmetry results was found between the sexes. In summary, SK patients had a larger anteroposterior diameter in relation to the transverse diameter than the control group., Discussion and Conclusions: SK affects the morphology of the entire thorax and changes rib proportions similarly in males and females. These changes might have a role in bipedal stability and locomotion efficiency. Moreover, understanding the unique anatomy of SK patients is essential when performing an anterior release and anterior fusion operative approach. Summary: The ribs, sternum, and costal margin provide a rigid, but flexible chest wall that functions to provide protection to the vital cardiothoracic organs, while also allowing for varying levels of respiration based on physiologic need. The latter function is accomplished through various muscular attachments and rib articulations with both the axial spine posteriorly and the sternum anteriorly. The accessory muscles of inspiration rely on the downward slope and outward curve of each rib, which when contracted move the ribs upward and outward, in turn forcing the sternum anterior and increasing the thoracic volume. Ribs are also classified as true, false, or floating based on their attachment anteriorly to the costal cartilage and sternum. Ribs 1-7 are considered true ribs as their costal cartilage directly articulates with the manubrium and sternum. Ribs 8-10 are considered false ribs because their costal cartilage connects to the cartilage of the immediately superior rib instead of the sternum itself. This complex cartilaginous structure is referred to as the costal margin, which provides attachments for the diaphragm and various abdominal muscles. Although historically thought to be a consistent structure, its variable nature has recently been defined in cadaveric studies. Ribs 11 and 12 are considered floating ribs because they have rudimentary cartilage caps and are not attached to the sternum at all. The sternum comprises the manubrium, body, and xiphoid process. Background: Lumbar ribs (LR) are a rare and relatively unknown anatomical abnormality of the lumbar spine. The literature provides better understanding regarding other spinal congenital variations like cervical ribs or lumbosacral transitional vertebrae, which are rather commonly recognised conditions. Thus, this meta-analysis aimed to provide data on prevalence and key characteristics of LR., Methods: Relevant databases were systematically searched for studies reporting the prevalence, laterality and geographic distribution of LR. No exclusion criteria based on language and date of original articles were employed. The pooled prevalence estimates (PPE) were calculated using a random-effects model. To assess the between-study heterogeneity, the I 2 statistic and Chi-square test were utilized. Throughout the investigation, the PRISMA guidelines were adhered to scrupulously. Evaluation of the included studies' reliability was made with the AQUA tool., Results: In total, 9 studies were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence estimate (PPE) of LR was 2.1% (95%CI: 1.0-4.6). In studies based on CT imaging, LR were found in 1.6% (95%CI: 0.6-4.3) of patients and in Xray based studies in 2.1% (95%CI: 0.4-11.1) of patients. Lumbar ribs were bilateral in majority of individuals (65.4%, 95%CI: 39.4-84.6) and could be most frequently encountered in Europe with PPE of 2.8% (95%CI: 3.0-20.0), then in East Asia with PPE of 1.5% (95%CI: 1.0-19.2) and Middle East with PPE of 1.1% (95%CI: 0.6-20.0)., Conclusions: The findings of our study indicate that LR are a common anatomical variation of lumbar spine, contrary to previous beliefs. In a clinical practice, when a patient presents with a non-specific low back pain, a possible occurrence of LR should be taken into consideration. Objectives: This study evaluates whether sacralization of a lumbar vertebra and lumbarization of a sacral vertebra are a paired duality but with opposite expressions; the former is associated with 23 presacral vertebrae (PSV) and the latter with 25 PSV. Are sacralization and lumbarization local phenomena, involving only vertebra (V) 24 and V25, or are they associated with other costal-vertebral transformations?, Materials and Methods: Study sample is of skeletonized humans, 431 females and 1405 males, who were 20-49 years of age-at-death and who died in the United States in the 20th and 21st centuries. Data collected are numbers of PSV and sacral vertebrae, presence of rib of V7, position of diaphragmatic vertebra, and transverse process and rib lengths of V5-V9, V18-V19, and V21-V22., Results: Females and males differ significantly in numbers of PSV. Both sexes show significant differences among individuals with 23 PSV, 24 PSV, and 25 PSV: (1) individuals with 23 PSV have the shortest ribs, whereas those with 25 PSV have the longest ribs, of V18 and V19; and (2) individuals with 23 PSV have the highest frequency of 6 sacral vertebrae, whereas those with 25 PSV have the highest frequency of 5 sacral vertebrae., Discussion: Individuals with 23 PSV and 25 PSV show posterior and anterior homeotic transformation, respectively, of the thoracic-lumbar and lumbar-sacral boundaries, but only individuals with 25 PSV show transformation of the sacral-coccygeal boundary. Squamates have independently evolved an elongate, limb-reduced body form numerous times. This transition has been proposed to involve either changes to regulatory gene expression or downstream modification of target enhancers to produce a homogeneous, deregionalized axial skeleton. Analysis of vertebral morphology has suggested that regionalization is maintained in snake-like body forms, but morphological variation in the other primary component of the axial skeleton, the dorsal ribs, has not been previously examined. We quantified rib morphology along the anterior-posterior axis in limbed and snake-like squamates to test different regionalization models. We find that the relative position of regional boundaries remains consistent across taxa of differing body types, including in the homoplastic evolution of snake-like body forms. The consistent retention of regional boundaries in this primaxial domain is uncorrelated with more plastic abaxial region markers. Rather than loss of regions, rib shape at the anterior and posterior of the axis converges on those in the middle, resulting in axial regions being distinguishable by allometric shape changes rather than by discrete morphologies. This complexity challenges notions of deregionalization, revealing a nuanced evolutionary history shaped by shared functions.

Purpose: Preoperative counting of thoracic and lumbar vertebrae is crucial in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) due to reported anatomical variations and potential surgical site misidentification. This study investigated characteristics associated with the vertebral number variations AIS, particularly focusing on rib morphology., Methods: Based on three-dimensional computed tomography, patients were categorized into the non-variant number group, comprising individuals with 12 thoracic and 5 lumbar vertebrae, and the variant number group, comprising individuals with different numbers of vertebrae. Additionally, the most caudal rib morphology was classified as normal, unilateral, or hypoplastic., Results: A total of 359 patients were included in our study (41 males, 318 females, age: 16.3 ± 3.1 years), with 44 patients (12.3%) assigned to the variant number group. Logistic regression analysis identified unilateral ribs (odds ratio [OR]: 10.50) and lumbosacral transitional vertebrae (LSTV) (OR 6.49) as significant risk factors associated with variations. Further analysis revealed hypoplastic ribs as a significant risk factor associated with LSTV (OR: 4.58). 8 CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that abnormal rib morphology may be associated with vertebral number variations. Close attention to rib morphology is, therefore, warranted in cases with atypical vertebral numbers. Accordingly, to ensure surgical safety and accuracy, spine surgeons must communicate these variations to the surgical team, standardize nomenclature for describing them, and intraoperatively verify fusion levels with them., (© 2024. Rib cross-sectional shapes (characterized by the outer contour and cortical bone thickness) affect the rib mechanical response under impact loading, thereby influence the rib injury pattern and risk. A statistical description of the rib shapes or their correlations to anthropometrics is a prerequisite to the development of numerical human body models representing target demographics. Variational autoencoders (VAE) as anatomical shape generators remain to be explored in terms of utilizing the latent vectors to control or interpret the representativeness of the generated results. In this paper, we propose a pipeline for developing a multi-rib cross-sectional shape generative model from CT images, which consists of the achievement of rib cross-sectional shape data from CT images using an anatomical indexing system and regular grids, and a unified framework to fit shape distributions and associate shapes to anthropometrics for different rib categories. Specifically, we collected CT images including 3193 ribs, surface regular grid is generated for each rib based on anatomical coordinates, the rib cross-sectional shapes are characterized by nodal coordinates and cortical bone thickness. The tensor structure of shape data based on regular grids enable the implementation of CNNs in the conditional variational autoencoder (CVAE). The CVAE is trained against an auxiliary classifier to decouple the low-dimensional representations of the inter- and intra- variations and fit each intra-variation by a Gaussian distribution simultaneously. Random tree regressors are further leveraged to associate each continuous intra-class space with the corresponding anthropometrics of the subjects, i.e., age, height and weight. As a result, with the rib class labels and the latent vectors sampled from Gaussian distributions or predicted from anthropometrics as the inputs, the decoder can generate valid rib cross-sectional shapes of given class labels (male/female, 2nd to 11th ribs) for arbitrary populational percentiles or specific age, height and weight, which paves the road for future biomedical and biomechanical studies considering the diversity of rib shapes across the population., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Ltd. There is a need to fully understand intra-skeletal variability within different populations to develop and improve age-at-death estimation methods. This study evaluates age-related histomorphometric changes in three different bones intra-individually in a modern Australian sample. Four female and 13 male elderly Australian adult donors (67-93 years) were examined for osteon population density (OPD), osteon area (On.Ar), and Haversian canal area (H.Ar) of secondary osteons to compare between femora, ribs, and humeri and assess against age. In the pooled sex sample, no statistically significant correlations were observed between age and each histological variable. In the males, OPD of the femur increased significantly with age, as did porosity in the rib. In the male humeri, OPD increased moderately with age, while H.Ar was decreased moderately with age. Intra-bone comparisons showed that males had significantly higher osteon counts in their ribs compared to their femora, while their ribs showed statistically significantly less porosity than their humeri. When bone size was accounted for, by adjusting the femur and humerus histology data by robusticity indices, histology values were found to be similar between bones within the same individual. This is despite the upper and lower limbs receiving different ranges and types of biomechanical load. Our findings demonstrate that bone size influences histomorphometry, and this could confound age-at-death estimations that have not been adjusted for robusticity. Future studies would benefit from examining bone histomorphometry within a larger sample size and incorporating bone robusticity measures into histology analyses., (© 2024 The Authors. Age-at-death estimation is a difficult task in fragmented or incomplete contexts. The generation and testing of methods are needed to identify their potential application in different types of osteological samples. This paper proposes a new method for age estimation using the first rib. Four hundred and fifteen individuals from the Coimbra Identified Skeletal Collections (Portugal) were studied; the sample was divided in two groups (reference and test samples), used to develop the procedure and to evaluate its reliability. The three rib joints and two variables (surface texture and topography, and periarticular margins and subsidence of the surface) were recorded. Statistical analyses were performed to test the procedure reproducibility, and side and sex variations. Posterior probabilities were calculated following Bayesian statistics and used to estimate the most likely age-at-death in the test sample. The results show the reproducibility of the method is adequate, left and right ribs can be indistinctly recorded, and both sexes show similar change patterns. The costal face and the head epiphyseal region offered satisfactory results and the percentages of correct estimations are greater for younger individuals, decreasing as ages-at-death are higher. This method is more effective among individuals in the 20-50 years cohort; nevertheless, it also offered satisfactory estimates in older ones. Overestimations in individuals younger than 40 years and underestimations in individuals older than 75 years were identified. In conclusion, the first rib offer adequate estimates when a basic probabilistic approach is chosen. Human ribs are thought to be less affected by mechanical strain at the microscopic level than limb bones, implying that rib remodelling better reflects bone physiological homeostasis. Here, we test the hypothesis that rib tissue will be well vascularized and thus enhance susceptibility to metabolic influence. An intra-skeletal comparison of bone vascular canal density was conducted using a macropod animal model adapted to bipedal habitual hopping. The right humerus, ulna, radius, femur, tibia, fibula, a mid-thoracic and upper-thoracic rib of an eastern grey kangaroo (Macropus giganteus) were sectioned at the midshaft, from which histological sections were prepared. Bone vascularity from a maximum of 12 mm 2  of sub-periosteal parallel-fibred and lamellar bone was recorded, resulting in a total of 2047 counted vessels. Vascular canal density data were corrected by cortical width, maximum length, and midshaft circumference robusticity indices computed for each bone. The fibula consistently had the highest vascular canal density, even when corrected for maximum length, cortical width and midshaft circumference robusticities. This was followed by the mid- and upper-thoracic ribs. Vascularity differences between bones were relatively consistent whether vascular canal density was controlled for by cortical width or midshaft circumference robusticities. Vascular canal density and robusticity indices were also positively and negatively correlated (p < 0.05). Results confirm that the ribs are well vascularized, which facilitates bone metabolic processes such as remodelling, but the fibula also appears to be a well vascularized bone. Future research investigating human bone metabolism will benefit from examining thoracic rib or fibula samples.

One of the first steps in the identification of human remains is sex estimation. Discriminant functions are very useful for this purpose, as they are based on the fundamental premise of the sexual dimorphism in osseous remains. However, the absence of studies of this kind in the thoracic cage is visible, and adequate cause to justify this work. To this purpose, we analysed and measured a set of ribs, R1 to R4, belonging to skeletons of contemporary chronology (1970-2010), in order to obtain discriminant functions enabling sex estimation through equations applied to the rib neck. The sample comes from the Cemetery of San José, which is located at the Laboratory of Anthropology at the University of Granada. All data from this sample was known: ancestry, sex, age-at-death and cause of death. Results showed a percentage of success of approximately 80-88% in ribs R2 to R4, and approximately 85-90% in R1, reaching up to 93.2%. Results from intra-/inter-observer error tests show excellent reproducibility of the method. The data confirms that it is possible to estimate sex from the rib neck.

Rib fractures represent a common injury type due to blunt chest trauma, affecting hospital stay and mortality especially in elderly patients. Factors promoting rib fragility, however, are little investigated. The purpose of this in vitro study was to explore potential determinants of human rib fragility in the elderly. 89 ribs from 13 human donors (55-99 years) were loaded in antero-posterior compression until fracture using a material testing machine, while surface strains were captured using a digital image correlation system. The effects of age, sex, bone mineral density, rib level and side, four global morphological factors (e.g. rib length), and seven rib cross-sectional morphological factors (e.g. cortical thickness, determined by μCT), on fracture load were statistically examined using Pearson correlation coefficients, Mann-Whitney U test as well as Kruskal-Wallis test with Dunn-Bonferroni post hoc correction. Fracture load showed significant dependencies (p < 0.05) from bone mineral density, age, antero-posterior rib length, cortical thickness, bone volume/tissue volume ratio, trabecular number, trabecular separation, and both cross-sectional area moments of inertia and was significantly higher at rib levels 7 and 8 compared to level 4 (p = 0.001/0.013), whereas side had no significant effect (p = 0.989). Cortical thickness exhibited the highest correlation with fracture load (r = 0.722), followed by the high correlation of fracture load with the area moment of inertia around the longitudinal rib cross-sectional axis (r = 0.687). High correlations with maximum external rib surface strain were detected for bone volume/tissue volume ratio (r = 0.631) and trabecular number (r = 0.648), which both also showed high correlations with the minimum internal rib surface strain (r =  - 0.644/ - 0.559). Together with rib level, the determinants cortical thickness, area moment of inertia around the longitudinal rib cross-sectional axis, as well as bone mineral density exhibited the largest effects on human rib fragility with regard to the fracture load. Sex, rib cage side, and global morphology, in contrast, did not affect rib fragility in this study. When checking elderly patients for rib fractures due to blunt chest trauma, patients with low bone mineral density and the mid-thoracic area should be carefully examined.

Fragmented human remains present a challenge for forensic experts as they attempt to identify individuals using standard forensic methods. Several histological age estimation techniques have been developed during the last fifty years to aid in this process. However, very few validation studies have been conducted in order to test their accuracy and bias, and thus, validation assessment is required as we employ them while testifying in court. Histological variables are assessed from rib thin sections from two Mediterranean samples; Cretans (N = 41) and Greek-Cypriots (N = 47). Intra and inter-observer errors are assessed through TEM analysis and Intra-class Correlation Coefficient by testing observers with different levels of experience as they collected data on osteon counts and area measurements. The relation between the variables and age is determined using correlation coefficients. Histomorphometric data are applied to four widely used age estimation formulas assessing the performance of the methods for the entire sample. Inaccuracy and bias are calculated with age estimations and known age tested for significance and proportional bias assessed. Overall, histological parameters presented acceptable intra- and inter-observer errors. All variables exhibited statistically significant correlation with age (P < 0.01). For three of the techniques, data showed a systematic underestimation of age with an increase in inaccuracy in older individuals. One of the age estimation formulas produced overestimation of young individuals yet, it more accurately estimated the age of older individuals. Forensic anthropology includes, amongst other applications, the positive identification of unknown human skeletal remains. The first step in this process is an assessment of the biological profile, that is: sex, age, stature and ancestry. In forensic contexts, age estimation is one of the main challenges in the process of identification. Recently established admissibility criteria are driving researchers towards standardisation of methodological procedures. Despite these changes, experience still plays a central role in anthropological examinations. In order to avoid this issue, age estimation procedures (i) must be presented to the scientific community and published in peer reviewed journals, (ii) accurately explained in terms of procedure and (iii) present clear information about the accuracy of the estimation and possible error rates. In order to fulfil all these requirements, a number of methods based on physiological processes which result in biochemical changes in various tissue structures at the molecular level, such as modifications in DNA-methylation and telomere shortening, racemization of proteins and stable isotopes analysis, have been developed. The current work proposes a new systematic approach in age estimation based on tracing physicochemical and mechanical degeneration of the rib cortical bone matrix. This study used autopsy material from 113 rib specimens. A set of 33 parameters were measured by standard bio-mechanical (nanoindentation and microindentation), physical (TGA/DSC, XRD and FTIR) and histomorphometry (porosity-ImageJ) methods. Stepwise regressions were used to create equations that would produce the best 'estimates of age at death' vs real age of the cadavers. Five equations were produced; in the best of cases an equation counting 7 parameters had an R 2  = 0.863 and mean absolute error of 4.64 years. The present method meets all the admissibility criteria previously described. Furthermore, the method is experience-independent and as such can be performed without previous expert knowledge of forensic anthropology and human anatomy.

Existing histological age estimation methods using the rib were developed mainly from the midshaft; however, in forensic practice, uncertainty of sampling location often arises due to fragmented or previously sampled ribs. The potential for error increases when sampling location is uncertain and utilizing a section beyond the midshaft (either anterior or posterior) may result in erroneous age estimates. Additionally, there is debate within the field regarding the minimum number of sections needed for accurate age estimation. The aim of this research is to determine the importance of the midshaft distinction for age-at-death assessment and the necessity of analyzing serial sections by evaluating histological variables at sampling locations along the length of the rib. Three seriated histological sections at three sampling locations (anterior, midshaft, and posterior) were obtained from sixth ribs of ten postmortem human subjects. Cortical area (Ct.Ar) and osteon population density (OPD) were collected from each section (n = 90). Significant differences were determined in Ct.Ar between sampling locations, demonstrating the variation present along the length of the rib. A comparison of OPD at sampling locations revealed significant differences, suggesting that sampling site is critical to accurate age estimates. When sampling location is uncertain, a more anterior section should be taken. Analysis of serial sections within locations revealed no significant differences in OPD or Ct.Ar, supporting the practice of collecting data from one section for age estimation. Objective: The pedicle-rib unit is regarded as an expanded pedicle and is a new approach to thoracic pedicle fixation. Previous studies were mostly focused on anatomic, radiographic, and biomechanical assessment. However, there is no study on anatomic relationship of bony structures in the pedicle-rib unit. This article investigates the anatomic relationships between transverse process, pedicle, rib, and corresponding vertebrae body in the pedicle-rib unit, so as to improve the clinical safety of pedicle-rib unit screw placement., Methods: Forty-five normal dry adult cadaver specimens were included. Anatomic parameters were measured. Anatomic parameters were 1) the anatomic relationship between the transverse process and the pedicle (the distance from the horizontal center line of the transverse process to the center and the superior and inferior border of the pedicle); 2) the anatomic relationship between the transverse process and the rib (the overlap portion between the costal neck and the transverse process); 3) the anatomic relationship between the transverse process and the vertebral body (the relative position of the horizontal midline of the transverse process and the vertebral body); and 4) the anatomic relationship between the pedicle and the rib (the overlap portion between the costal neck and the pedicle)., Results: The midline of the transverse process was located within the range of the superior and inferior borders of the pedicle in the thoracic spine. The distance between the midline of the transverse process and the center of the pedicle was the closest at T6 and T7, but the farthest at T11 and T12. The anterolateral part of the transverse process was mostly covered by rib from T1 to T8, but it was less covered from T9 to T12. The midline of the transverse process corresponded to the upper third or middle third of the vertebral body. The pedicle is completely or mostly overlapped by the rib from T1 to T9 on the anterolateral side, but from T10 to T12, the rib overlapped the pedicle partially., Conclusions: The pedicle-rib unit is a three-dimensional anatomic structure. The pedicle, transverse process, and rib are not completely in the same plane, and their positions vary in different segments. Pedicle-rib unit screw fixation is anatomically feasible. Sex estimation of skeletal remains is of great importance in the fields of physical and forensic anthropology. Since skeletons are often incomplete, it is essential to estimate sex from as many skeletal remains as possible. The aim of this study was to establish new methods for estimating sex using the morphology of the sternum and the fifth to ninth ribs. We considered two conditions of skeletal preservation: All skeletal elements measured are available, or only a single element is available. Traditional or virtual measurements were carried out on three samples: (1) A skeletal sample from the Hamann-Todd Human osteological collection, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, USA (N = 413), was used to create prediction equations for sex estimation. (2) A recent, CT-based sample from Israel (N = 33) was used to cross-validate the accuracy of the prediction equations. (3) A skeletal sample from the Anthropological Collection at Tel Aviv University (N = 15) was used to test the validity of the virtual measurements. Reliability and validity analyses were carried out via intraclass correlation coefficient analysis. Prediction equations for sex were created using logistic regression. The measurements were found to be highly reliable and valid. Success rates for sex estimation were high (> 80%) and correspond well between the skeletal and recent samples, especially for the left sixth, left eigth, and left ninth ribs. To conclude, measurements of the sternum and ribs are valuable for estimating sex and can be carried out using either traditional or virtual tools. Of all the skeletal elements examined in this study, the sternum, left sixth, left eighth, and left ninth ribs were found to be the most reliable skeletal elements for estimating the sex of an individual.

Most lizards walk and run with a sprawling gait in which the limbs are partly advanced by lateral undulation of the axial skeleton. Ribs and vertebrae are integral to this locomotor mode, but 3D motion of the axial skeleton has not been reported for lizard locomotion. Here, we use XROMM to quantify the relative motions of the vertebrae and ribs during slow treadmill locomotion in three savannah monitor lizards (Varanus exanthematicus) and three Argentine black and white tegus (Salvator merianae). To isolate locomotion, we selected strides with no concurrent lung ventilation. Rib rotations can be decomposed into bucket-handle rotation around a dorsoventral axis, pump-handle rotation around a mediolateral axis, and caliper rotations around a craniocaudal axis. During locomotion, every rib measured in both species rotated substantially around its costovertebral joint (8-17 degrees, summed across bucket, pump and caliper rotations). In all individuals from both species, the middle ribs rotated cranially through bucket and pump-handle motion during the propulsive phase of the ipsilateral forelimb. Axial kinematics during swing phase of the ipsilateral forelimb were mirror images of the propulsive phase. Although further work is needed to establish what causes these rib motions, active contraction of the hypaxial musculature may be at least partly responsible. Unilateral locomotor rib movements are remarkably similar to the bilateral pattern used for lung ventilation, suggesting a new hypothesis that rib motion during locomotion may have been an exaptation for the evolution of costal aspiration breathing in stem amniotes.

Bone histology grants substantial insight into the growth and biology of fossil vertebrates. Many of the major non-avian dinosaurian clades have been extensively sampled for bone histologic data allowing reconstruction of their growth as well as the assessment of the evolution of growth changes along phylogenies. However, horned ceratopsians are poorly represented in paleohistologic studies. Further, the ceratopsian taxa that have been examined are unevenly sampled phylogenetically with very basal forms and highly derived forms making up the majority of studied taxa. In order to rectify this, we have histologically sampled Avaceratops from Montana and Yehuecauhceratops from northern Mexico to assess how mid-sized basal centrosaurines grew relative to more basal and derived forms. Based on results from these taxa, basal centrosaurines present a mosaic of growth characters intermediate between those seen in basal ceratopsians and more derived centrosaurines. Further, Yehuecauhceratops has many lines of arrested growth preserved, suggesting that the large number of lines of arrested growth found in a high-latitude Pachyrhinosaurus specimen may be a result of phylogeny rather than geography. Since lines of arrested growth are not preserved in long bones of many ceratopsians, especially chasmosaurines, we also histologically sampled ribs of Avaceratops and Pachyrhinosaurus. However, the largest ribs were highly remodeled obscuring lines of arrested growth, making it unlikely that rib histology will clarify growth trends in ceratopsians. These centrosaurines add to the growing ceratopsian histological database and demonstrate that basal centrosaurines grew in a manner intermediate between non-ceratopsid taxa and derived centrosaurines. There is considerable variation in the gross morphology and tissue properties among the bones of human infants, children, adolescents, and adults. Using 18 known-age individuals (n female  = 8, n male  = 9, n unknown  = 1; birth to 21 years old), from a well-documented cemetery collection, Spitalfields Christ Church, London, UK, this study explores growth-related changes in cortical and trabecular bone microstructure. Micro-CT scans of mid-shaft middle thoracic ribs are used for quantitative analysis. Results are then compared to previously quantified conventional histomorphometry of the same sample. Total area (Tt.Ar), cortical area (Ct.Ar), cortical thickness (Ct.Th), and the major (Maj.Dm) and minor (Min.Dm) diameters of the rib demonstrate positive correlations with age. Pore density (Po.Dn) increases, but age-related changes to cortical porosity (Ct.Po) appear to be non-linear. Trabecular thickness (Tb.th) and trabecular separation (Tb.Sp) increase with age, whereas trabecular bone pattern factor (Tb.Pf), structural model index (SMI), and connectivity density (Conn.D) decrease with age. Sex-based differences were not identified for any of the variables included in this study. Some samples display clear evidence of diagenetic alteration without corresponding changes in radiopacity, which compromises the reliability of bone mineral density (BMD) data in the study of past populations. Cortical porosity data are not correlated with two-dimensional measures of osteon population density (OPD). This suggests that unfilled resorption spaces contribute more significantly to cortical porosity than do the Haversian canals of secondary osteons. Purpose: Sternalis muscle is an uncommon muscle head attaching between the sternoclavicular joint superiorly and the costal cartilage near the xiphoid process., Methods: In this study, 36 cadavers (18 male, 18 female) were obtained through the Anatomical Board of the State of Florida and complete, routine musculoskeletal dissection was performed while adhering to all relevant laws and practices., Results: Two examples of the sternalis muscle belly (5%) were identified, one in a black male and one a white female. The sternalis muscles were bilateral in both cases and each was formed of a single muscle belly. The superior attachments were continuous with the sternal attachment of sternocleidomastoid, and the inferior attachments connected to the costal cartilages. Sternalis did not cross the midline and the T2-T5 anterior intercostal neurovasculature associated closely with the muscle belly. In the female, a well-formed unilateral chondrocoracoideus muscle was apparent with a branch from the medial pectoral nerve closely associated on the deep surface. No other abnormalities in the chest, axilla, or brachial plexus were noted on either cadaver, and the pectoralis major and minor muscles were normally formed and innervated in both cases., Conclusion: This study supports other evidence in the literature that indicates the sternalis muscle has an average prevalence in the population of approximately 5%, and it appears across race and sex. Education about this structure is important for radiologists, surgeons, and doctors of physical therapy that may be involved in treatment and post-surgical rehabilitation of this region.

Introduction: Avicenna statedinteresting points on the symptoms of rib bone fractures, their physical examination, and also treatment and management of the complications in his master piece Canon in Tibb., Method: We reviewed Avicenna's Canon and his viewpoints on the anatomy of the rib bones and their fractures and compared it with conventional medicine., Result: He described the ana omy of the ribs; he explained the effectiveness of their structure in the prote tion of vital organs. He also suggested some methods for the management of rib fractures, such as using vacuum at the fracture site or open surgery in case of complications., Conclusion: Avicenna's point of view on the approach toward rib fractures had some similarities and differences with conventional practice. Some of his suggestions could be taken into account.

Background: We aimed to analyze the morphogenesis of all ribs from 1st to 12th rib pairs plus vertebrae to compare their differences and features according to the position along the cranial-caudal axis during the human embryonic period., Results: Rib pair formation was analyzed using high-resolution digitalized imaging data (n = 29) between Carnegie stage (CS) 18 and CS23 (corresponding to ED13-14 in mouse; HH29-35 in chick). A total of 348 rib pairs, from 1st to 12th rib pairs of each sample were subjected to Procrustes and principal component (PC) analyses. PC1 and PC2 accounted for 76.3% and 16.4% (total 92.7%) of the total variance, respectively, indicating that two components mainly accounted for the change in shape. The distribution of PC1 and PC2 values for each rib showed a "fishhook-like shape" upon fitting to a quartic equation. PC1 and PC2 value position for each rib pair moved along the fitted curve according to the development. Here we present detailed regional bone thickness and cross-sectional measurements from full adult ribs using high resolution CT scans processed with a cortical bone mapping technique. Sixth ribs from 33 subjects ranging from 24 to 99 years of age were used to produce average cortical bone thickness maps and to provide average ± 1SD corridors for expected cross-section properties (cross-sectional areas and inertial moments) as a function of rib length. Results obtained from CT data were validated at specific rib locations using direct measurements from cut sections. Individual thickness measurements from CT had an accuracy (mean error) and precision (SD error) of -0.013 ± 0.167 mm (R 2 coefficient of determination of 0.84). CT-based measurement errors for rib cross-sectional geometry were -0.1 ± 13.1% (cortical bone cross-sectional area) and 4.7 ± 1.8% (total cross-sectional area). Rib cortical bone thickness maps show the expected regional variation across a typical rib's surface. The local mid-rib maxima in cortical thickness along the pleural rib aspect ranged from range 0.9 to 2.6 mm across the study population with an average map maximum of 1.4 mm. Along the cutaneous aspect, rib cortical bone thickness ranged from 0.7 to 1.9 mm with an average map thickness of 0.9 mm. Average cross-sectional properties show a steady reduction in total cortical bone area from 10% along the rib's length through to the sternal end, whereas overall cross-sectional area remains relatively constant along the majority of the rib's length before rising steeply towards the sternal end. On average, male ribs contained more cortical bone within a given cross-section than was seen for female ribs. Importantly, however, this difference was driven by male ribs having larger overall cross-sectional areas, rather than by sex differences in the bone thickness observed at specific local cortex sites. The cortical bone thickness results here can be used directly to improve the accuracy of current human body and rib models. Isolated ribs and vertebrae of Middle Triassic sauropterygians are studied. The vertebrae have a well-defined large cavity in their centra, which is a unique feature and is without any modern analogue. The articular facets of vertebrae are made of endochondral bone including calcified as well as uncalcified cartilage. Vertebrae are pachyosteosclerotic in the pachypleurosaurs Neusticosaurus and Serpianosaurus from the Alpine Triassic, and osteosclerotic in the placodont, in the medium-sized Nothosaurus marchicus, and in the pachypleurosaur Anarosaurus. In large Nothosaurus specimens, the vertebrae are cavernous. The ribs of all sampled specimens are osteosclerotic, which resembles the microanatomy of long bones in all studied taxa. The proximal to medial part of ribs mainly consists of a compact periosteal cortex surrounding an inner endosteal territory. Toward the distal end of the ribs, the periosteal thickness decreases whereas the endosteal territory increases. Despite a shift from periosteal versus endosteal tissues, global rib compactness remains relatively constant. Osteosclerosis in ribs and vertebrae is reached by the same processes as in the long bones: by a relative increase in cortex thickness that is coupled by a reduction of the medullary cavity, by the persistence of calcified cartilage, and by an inhibition of remodeling although some resorption may occur but without complete redeposition of bone. Processes differ from those observed in Permian marine reptiles and some mosasaurines, where either extensive remodeling or inhibition of bone resorption leads to osteosclerosis. Purpose: The aim of the present in vitro study was to microscopically evaluate and describe the deformation of Lindeman surgical burs and the bone surface roughness after repeated osteotomies and sterilization cycles., Materials and Methods: Twenty-one Lindeman surgical burs were analyzed under scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to evaluate the damage of the bur's integrity after 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 osteotomies on bovine ribs. Eighteen bone specimens were obtained after osteotomy for roughness analysis using profilometry. One-way analysis of variance was used to compare the mean roughness values across the experimental groups, and P ≤ .05 was considered to indicate statistical significance., Results: Representative SEM images illustrated that all analyzed burs presented with some type of deformation at both the tip and the body, even after their first use. The mean roughness values were independent of the number of uses (P > .05); however, the standard deviation increased with the number of uses of the burs., Conclusions: These results suggest that even after their first use, rotatory surgical burs will have some type of deformation and that their cutting efficiency on the bone will vary and will be difficult to predict., (Copyright © 2019 American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. An acoustic shadow is an ultrasound artifact occurring at boundaries between significantly different tissue impedances, resulting in signal loss and a dark appearance. Shadow detection is important as shadows can identify anatomical features or obscure regions of interest. A study was performed to scan human participants (N = 37) specifically to explore the statistical characteristics of various shadows from different anatomy and with different transducers. Differences in shadow statistics were observed and used for shadow detection algorithms with a fitted Nakagami distribution on radiofrequency (RF) speckle or cumulative entropy on brightness-mode (B-mode) data. The fitted Nakagami parameter and entropy values in shadows were consistent across different transducers and anatomy. Both algorithms utilized adaptive thresholding, needing only the transducer pulse length as an input parameter for easy utilization by different operators or equipment. Mean Dice coefficients (± standard deviation) of 0.90 ± 0.07 and 0.87 ± 0.08 were obtained for the RF and B-mode algorithms, which is within the range of manual annotators. The high accuracy in different imaging scenarios indicates that the shadows can be detected with high versatility and without expert configuration. The understanding of shadow statistics can be used for more specialized techniques to be developed for specific applications in the future, including pre-processing for machine learning and automatic interpretation., (Crown Copyright © 2019. Background: The objective of this study was to compare cortical thickness of rib specimens scanned with clinical computed tomography (clinical-CT) at 0.5 and 1.0 mm slice thickness versus micro-CT at 0.05 mm slice thickness. Cortical thickness variation and accuracy was explored by anatomical region (anterior vs. lateral) and cross-sectional quadrants (superior, interior, inferior, and exterior)., Methods: A validated cortical thickness algorithm was applied to clinical-CT and micro-CT scans of 17 rib specimens from six male post mortem human subjects aged 42-81 years. Each rib specimen was segmented and the thickness measurements were partitioned into cross-sectional quadrants in the anterior and lateral regions of the rib. Within each rib quadrant, the following were calculated: average thickness ± standard deviation, mean thickness difference between clinical-CT and micro-CT, and a thickness ratio between clinical-CT and micro-CT. Correlations from linear regression and paired-t tests were determined for paired clinical-CT and micro-CT results., Results: On average, the 0.5 mm clinical-CT underestimated the micro-CT thickness by 0.005 mm, while the 1.0 mm clinical-CT overestimated the micro-CT thickness by 0.149 mm. Thickness derived from 0.5 mm clinical-CT showed greater significant linear correlations (p < 0.05) with micro-CT thickness compared to 1.0 mm clinical-CT., Conclusions: The small mean differences and thickness ratios near 1 show validation for the cortical thickness algorithm when applied to rib clinical-CT scans. The fresco The Creation of Adam (1511), painted on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel by the great genius of human anatomy Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564), represents one of the most emblematic and best-known scenes in the world. This fresco illustrates a key passage from the Book of Genesis: the moment when God creates the first man, Adam. Since its completion, this work has been intensively studied by many scholars of art, and by several anatomists, who have pointed out signs of anatomical representations contained in the scene. However, there is still some uncertainty regarding this famous scene, especially in relation to its complete iconography. In an attempt to understand Michelangelo's purpose better regarding this emblematic scene, this article presents unpublished evidence that the artist could have concealed within the figure of Adam the anatomical image of a rib which, according to traditional Biblical accounts, is iconographically associated with the origin of Eve, Adam's companion. Curiously, this hidden rib in Adam's body figure could be related to the traditional view of the origin of the first humans expounded in the Jewish Kabbalah. Clin. In 2001, a nearly complete sub-adult Tenontosaurus tilletti was collected from the Antlers Formation (Aptian-Albian) of southeastern Oklahoma. Beyond its exceptional preservation, computed tomography (CT) and physical examination revealed this specimen has five pathological elements with four of the pathologies a result of trauma. Left pedal phalanx I-1 and left dorsal rib 10 are both fractured with extensive callus formation in the later stages of healing. Left dorsal rib 7 (L7) and right dorsal rib 10 (R10) exhibit impacted fractures compressed 26 mm and 24 mm, respectively. The fracture morphologies in L7 and R10 indicate this animal suffered a strong compressive force coincident with the long axis of the ribs. All three rib pathologies and the pathological left phalanx I-1 are consistent with injuries sustained in a fall. However, it is clear from the healing exhibited by these fractures that this individual survived the fall. In addition to traumatic fractures, left dorsal rib 10 and possibly left phalanx I-1 have a morphology consistent with post-traumatic infection in the form of osteomyelitis. The CT scans of left metacarpal IV revealed the presence of an abscess within the medullary cavity consistent with a subacute form of hematogenous osteomyelitis termed a Brodie abscess. This is only the second reported Brodie abscess in non-avian dinosaurs and the first documented occurrence in herbivorous dinosaurs. The presence of a Brodie abscess, known only in mammalian pathological literature, suggest mammalian descriptors for bone infection may be applicable to non-avian dinosaurs.

The morphology and size of the Neandertal thorax is a subject of growing interest due to its link to general aspects of body size and shape, including physiological aspects related to bioenergetics and activity budgets. However, the number of well-preserved adult Neandertal costal remains is still low. The recent finding of new additional costal remains from the Regourdou 1 (R1) skeleton has rendered this skeleton as one of the most complete Neandertal costal skeletons with a minimum of 18 ribs represented, five of which are complete or virtually complete. Here we describe for the first time all the rib remains from R1 and compare them to a large modern Euroamerican male sample as well as to other published Neandertal individuals. The costal skeleton of this individual shows significant metric and morphological differences from our modern human male comparative sample. The perceived differences include: dorsoventrally large 1st and 2nd ribs, 3rd ribs with a very closed dorsal curvature and large maximum diameters at the posterior angle, a large tubercle-iliocostal line distance in the 4th rib, thick shafts at the dorsal end of its 6th ribs, thick mid-shafts of the 8th ribs, large articular tubercles at the 9th ribs, and thick shafts of the 11th and 12th ribs. Here we also describe a new mesosternal fragment: the left lateral half of sternebral segments 4 and 5. This portion reveals that the mesosternum of R1 had a sternal foramen in its inferiormost preserved sternal segment and supports previous estimation of the total length of this mesosternum. The new costal remains from R1 support the view that Neandertals, when compared with modern humans, show a significantly different thorax, consistent with differences found in other anatomical regions such as the vertebral column and pelvis., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Periosteal new bone formation (PNBF) is a common finding in a large spectrum of diseases. In clinical practice, the morphology and location of periosteal lesions are frequently used to assist in the differential diagnosis of distinct bone conditions. Less commonly reported is the presence of PNBF on the ribs. This contrasts with the data retrieved from the study of skeletonized human remains that shows a high frequency of cases and a strong, albeit not specific, association between periosteal rib lesions and pulmonary conditions (e.g. tuberculosis). Despite that, an overall disagreement regarding the specificity and non-specificity of periosteal reactions exists in the study of dry bone remains. The insufficient number of clinical models exploring the morphology and the pathophysiology of PNBF's and the lack of systematic studies of pathological samples with a known diagnosis are claimed as major reasons for the disagreements. This study aimed to describe and compare the macroscopic and the histomorphologic appearance of periosteal rib lesions and to discuss their usefulness as diagnostic indicators. To pursue this goal, an assemblage of 13 rib samples (males = 11, females = 2, mean age-at-death = 36.6 years old) was collected from the Luis Lopes Skeletal Collection (Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência, Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal). The assemblage belongs to individuals who died from pulmonary-TB (group 1), non-TB pulmonary infections (group 2) and other conditions (group 3). Prior to sample preparation, the ribs were visually inspected and the PNBF described according to its thickness, the degree of cortical integration and the type of new bone formed (e.g. woven, lamellar or both). After sampling, each bone sample was prepared for histological analysis under plane and polarized light microscopy. Macroscopically, the results showed no differences in the new bone composition between cause-of-death groups. Only slight differences in the degree of cortical integration, which was most frequently classified as mild to high in the pulmonary-TB group, were observed. Histologically, no distinguishing features were identified by pathological group. However, new bone microarchitectures were observed compatible with (1) acute, fast-growing processes (e.g. spiculated reactions), (2) long-standing processes with a rapid bone formation (e.g. appositional layering of bone) and/or (3) chronic, slow-growing processes (e.g. layers of compact lamellae). To some extent, these distinct rates of disease progression resonate with the cause-of-death listed for some individuals. Despite the small sample size, the results of this investigation are in agreement with previous studies, according to which the macroscopic and histological appearance of periosteal formations are not specific for a particular pathological conditions. Nevertheless, the results support the conclusion that the morphology of periosteal lesions is a good biological indicator for inferring the rate of progression and duration of pathological processes. Recent studies have indicated that there may be an infradian systemic biorhythm that coordinates aspects of human hard tissue growth and influences adult body size. Here we investigate if evidence of this biorhythm retained in human teeth as the periodicity of Retzius lines (RP) corresponds with the microstructural growth of a non-weight bearing bone, the rib, in a sample of 50 human juvenile skeletons. Using static histomorphometric methods, the RP of one permanent tooth from each skeleton was calculated and combined with measures of bone remodeling in a rib from the same individual. Results provide the first evidence that the infradian biorhythm is linked to bone remodeling in children. Retzius periodicity was negatively correlated with relative osteon area (r = -0.563, p = 0.008) and positively related to Haversian canal area (r = 0.635, p = 0.002) and diameter (r = 0.671, p = 0.001) in children between the age of 8 to 12 years. There was also a negative correlation between RP and the relative cortical area of ribs (r = -0.500, p = 0.048). Relationships between bone remodeling and the biorhythm were much more variable in younger children. Results imply that as the biorhythm speeds up there is increased bone deposition during remodeling of the rib, leading to the larger osteonal lamellar bone areas and smaller Haversian canals in children between 8 and 12 years of age. Quantifying the amount of cortical bone loss is one variable used in histological methods of adult age estimation. Measurements of cortical area tend to be subjective and additional information regarding bone loss is not captured considering cancellous bone is disregarded. We describe whether measuring bone area (cancellous + cortical area) rather than cortical area may improve histological age estimation for the sixth rib. Mid-shaft rib cross-sections (n = 114) with a skewed sex distribution were analyzed. Ages range from 16 to 87 years. Variables included: total cross-sectional area, cortical area, bone area, relative bone area, relative cortical area, and endosteal area. Males have larger mean total cross-sectional area, bone area, and cortical area than females. Females display a larger mean endosteal area and greater mean relative measure values. Relative bone area significantly correlates with age. Objectives: Novel information on apartheid health conditions may be obtained through the study of recent skeletal collections. Using a backscattered scanning electron microscopy (BSE-SEM) approach, this study aims to produce bone quality and tissue mineralization data for an understudied South African population from the Western Cape province., Methods: Using BSE-SEM imaging, cortical porosity (Ct.Po), osteocyte lacunar density (Ot.Lc.Dn), and the degree of tissue mineralization were quantified in midthoracic ribs from the Kirsten Skeletal Collection. Individuals ( n female = 75, n male = 68, and mean age = 46.3 years) were predominantly from the South Africa Colored (SAC) population group ( n SAC = 103, 72%). Full cross-sectional images of each rib were manually stitched together in Adobe Photoshop. Photomontages were imported into MATALB (Mathworks, Natick, MA) for image processing and analysis. Age-related changes in histomorphometric parameters and sex differences were examined using correlation analysis, as well as linear and nonlinear regressions., Results: Young adult men have significantly less mineralized bone and fewer osteocyte lacunae, compared to women. Only men demonstrate a significant negative relationship between Ot.Lc.Dn and age. Average tissue mineralization decreases with age in women, while Ct.Po increases. Pore area (Po.Ar) does not vary with age, but pore density (Po.Dn) is highest in the perimenopause, when accelerated rates of bone turnover are first anticipated. Ct.Po is highest in the years following the predicted age of menopause, but levels off in the final decades of life., Conclusions: Men and women display disparate patterns of bone aging. Systemic disenfranchisement of non-white population groups affected bone health in South Africa, and may continue to do so today. The Eidolon helvum is a straw coloured fruit bat, also known as the African fruit bat. This study details theanatomical peculiarities, gross description and morphometrics of the ribs. Fifteen adult bats were used for this study. Thevertebral formula was C7T13-14L3-4S7Cd3-4. Spinous process was rudimentary on thoracic vertebrae 1 to 7. The numbers ofthe ribs ranged from 13 to 14, with the longest being rib 7, and the shortest being rib 14. Twenty percent of the males and50% of the females had 14 ribs; the male and one female had the 14th rib being unilateral (present on the right side of maleand left side of female). The first rib did not articulate directly with the sternum, but through a connecting triangular-shapedbone. The thoracic inlet and outlet were larger in males, relative to the females (inlet height - males 21.82 ± 2.68 mm,females 20.44 ± 4.91 mm; outlet height - males 36.46 ± 3.76 mm, females 33.23 ± 4.33 mm). The sternum was segmented,five in number and had a ventral elongation like the avian keel. Data obtained may find application in comparative andapplied anatomy, and forensic medicine.

Purpose: The pectoralis minor muscle (PMi) generally originates from the third, fourth, and fifth ribs and inserts on the medial and superior margins of the anterior portion of the coracoid process. Variations in the shape and attachment point of the PMi could cause discomfort in the shoulders. The aim of this study was to observe the types of morphological insertion patterns and attachment sites of the PMi., Methods: Seventy-four sides of fresh, embalmed Korean (42 sides; mean age 78 years) and Thai (32 sides; mean age 78 years) cadavers were dissected to analyze the morphological insertion types and attachment sites of the PMi., Results: Unusual insertion patterns were evident in about 23% of the samples. When the portion of the PMi tendon ran over the coracoid process, the most common attachment site was the glenohumeral joint capsule. We also confirmed the attachment of the PMi to the clavicle. Costal attachments of the PMi that extend from the second rib to the fourth rib were observed frequently as well., Conclusions: Unusual insertion patterns of the PMi are common. Some authors consider that tendon attachment to the joint capsule can cause shoulder pain. In addition, the PMi tendon could be utilized in acromioclavicular joint reconstruction. Surgeons need to be aware of the possibility of a PMi variant being found during surgery even when this is not visible in magnetic resonance or ultrasound imaging.

This study examines the influence of human adult body size and bone mass on cortical bone histomorphometry, and explores microstructural variation in mid-thoracic ribs. The sample consists of 213 individuals ( n female = 82, n male = 131, mean age-at-death = 47.96 ± 15.71 years) from the Kirsten Skeletal Collection, Stellenbosch University, South Africa. Maximum femur length and femur maximum head diameter are used as proxies for height and weight; total cross-sectional area, endosteal area, and cortical area are used to derive measures of bone mass. Histomorphometric variables include osteon population density (OPD) and osteon area (On.Ar). Partial correlations, controlling for age, test for significant relationships among variables. A hierarchical regression model is used to determine unique variable contributions to On.Ar and OPD. Body size measurements do not correlate with either bone mass or histomorphometric variables, suggesting that size-standardization may not be necessary in studies of rib bone microstructure. Age is the most significant factor affecting OPD, while OPD is the best predictor of On.Ar. These findings suggest that age-related secondary osteon crowding affects osteon geometry. Understanding the biological mechanisms that direct bone remodeling and determine microstructural variation is essential for interpreting histological data. The Krapina costal sample was studied by Gorjanović-Kramberger in the early twentieth century. He pointed out unique features in the sample such as the rounder rib cross-section, which was recently confirmed in other Neanderthal specimens. Round rib cross-sections are characteristic of Homo ergaster, suggesting this may be plesiomorphic for Pleistocene Homo, but it is unknown whether Homo antecessor also had this rib shape. Furthermore, the influence of allometry on the cross-sectional shape of ribs is still unknown. The large costal sample from Krapina allows us to address these issues. We quantified cross-section morphology at the midshaft throughout a closed curve of one landmark and nine sliding semilandmarks in the Krapina costal remains (n = 7), as well as in other Neanderthals (n = 50), H. antecessor (n = 3) and modern humans, both fossil (n = 12) and recent (n = 160). We used principal components analysis and mean comparisons to explore interspecific differences, regression analysis to investigate allometry, and partial least squares analysis to examine covariation of cross-section shape and overall rib morphology. Neanderthal cross-sections tended to be larger than those of recent humans except for the Krapina and Tabun remains. Regarding shape, inter-group differences were found only in the diaphragmatic thorax, where Neanderthal and H. antecessor ribs were statistically significantly rounder than those of modern humans. Allometry accounted for covariation of size on shape, but the Neandertal and modern human trajectories had different slopes. While our results based on the Krapina costal sample are similar to previous findings, we also make several new insights: 1) the cross-section morphology observed in Neanderthals was probably present in H. antecessor, albeit less marked; 2) the distinct roundness of Neanderthal cross-sections is not related to size; 3) rounder cross-sections are correlated with ribs presenting less curvature in cranial view and a low degree of torsion in recent humans. These results are important for the interpretation of fragmentary Neanderthal costal remains, and the fact that the differences are marked only in the diaphragmatic thorax could have implications for breathing kinematics., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. A tumour resection normally involves a large tissue resection and bone replacement. Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) has become a suitable candidate for use in various prostheses owing to its lightness in weight, modulus close to that of natural bone, and good biocompatibility, among other factors. This study proposes a new design method for a rib prosthesis using the centroid trajectory of the natural replaced rib, where the strength can be adjusted by monitoring the cross-sectional area, shape, and properties. A custom-designed rib prosthesis was manufactured using fused deposition modelling (FDM) manufacturing technology, and the mechanical behaviour was found to be close to that of a natural rib. A finite element analysis of the designed rib was carried out under similar loading conditions to those used in mechanical testing. The results indicate that the centroid trajectory derived from a natural rib diaphysis can provide reliable guidance for the design of a rib prosthesis. Such methodology not only offers considerable design freedom in terms of shape and required strength, but also benefits the quality of the surface finishing for samples manufactured using the FDM technique. FDM-printed PEEK rib prostheses have been successfully implanted, and good clinical performances have been achieved.

This study proposes the description of the development of the postcranial axial skeleton, including vertebrae, gastralium, ribs, sternum, and interclavicle, in Melanosuchus niger. Six nests were marked and two eggs removed from each nest at 24-hr intervals until hatching. For posthatching evaluation, 30 hatchlings were kept in captivity and one exemplar was euthanized at three-day intervals. Samples were diaphanized using potassium hydroxide (KOH), alizarin red S, and Alcian blue. A routinely generally used method was applied for histological evaluation. It was difficult to define in which vertebrae the development of cartilaginous centers began, but it was possible to observe that this condensation advanced in the craniocaudal direction. The condensation started in the vertebral arches and was visibly stronger in the cervical and dorsal regions, advancing to the lumbar, sacral and, last, to the caudal region. The atlas showed a highly different morphology compared with the other cervical vertebrae, with a short intercenter, two neural arches, and a proatlas. The ossification process began in the body of cervical vertebrae III to VIII and alizarin retention decreased in the last vertebrae, indicating a craniocaudal direction in bone development, similar to cartilage formation. In the histological sections of gastralium and interclavicles of M. niger at several development stages, it was possible to observe that these elements showed intramembranous development. The fourth rib has been used commonly in order to estimate age at death and even sex in skeletal remains but many often, Iscan's estimates do not adjust to the real age of the individual. Population specific references for sex and age-at-death estimation from the sternal end of the fourth rib are presented for a contemporary Mexican sample. A total of 504 ribs with known sex and age from a morgue sample were studied (444 males, 60 females, 17 to 92 years old). The height and breadth of the sternal end of the rib were sexually dimorphic (p = .000), and allowed a correct sex assignment in 73.3% to 84% of the cases from univariate and multivariate discriminant functions. With regard to age-at-death estimation, the morphological changes summarized by the phases of the sternal end of the fourth rib are correlated with known age in this sample (Spearman's Rho, p = .000). However, the original age intervals tend to underestimate age at death and inaccuracy increases with phase scored in males. Descriptive statistics for rib phase are provided for males and females, and new age-at-death estimates based on transition analysis and Bayesian statistics are provided for the male sample. Objectives: To verify accurate placement of the precordial ECG leads by identifying the 4th and 5th intercostal spaces as a function of the length of the sternum. This should decrease the percentage of lead misplacement leading to misdiagnoses., Methods: The population consisted of patients and healthy volunteers. The proposed method compared palpation of the 4th and 5th intercostal spaces to a percentile of the sternal length. Location of the 4th and 5th intercostal space using a simple device was evaluated to assist in proper placement of the precordial leads to obtain accurate diagnosis., Results: The location of the 4th and 5th intercostal space is related to the length of the sternum. It is 77% of the sternal length that measures 15cm for the 4th intercostal space. The position of the V1 and V2 electrodes decreases to 57% when the sternal length is 26cm. Similar data was obtained to locate the 5th intercostal space with proper position of V4-V6 electrodes. Tables are provided to facilitate this process. The lateral costotransverse ligament, a short band that stabilizes the costovertebral joint, is found in close proximity to the dorsal root ganglion. This ligament is an important surgical landmark during tumor resections or nerve blocks in the paravertebral space. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively and qualitatively describe the morphology of the lateral costotransverse ligament and its relation to the dorsal root ganglion at all levels of the thoracic spine. The thoracic spines of eight embalmed cadavers were dissected bilaterally. The length, width, and thickness of the ligament were measured. The distance from the inferolateral aspect of the ligament to the lateral aspect of the dorsal root ganglion was also measured. Three bilateral groups of lateral costotransverse ligaments, top (on ribs 1-2), middle (on ribs 3-10), and bottom (on ribs 11-12), were compared based on anatomic distinctions between the costotransverse joints, which can influence ligament morphology. Among the three groups, the differences between the length, width, and thickness were not statistically significant. However, the distance from the lateral costotransverse ligament to the dorsal root ganglion differed significantly (P = 0.000), with the middle group having the longest distance, and the bottom group having the shortest distance. This finding can help clinicians and surgeons avoid iatrogenic injuries of neural structures during thoracic spine surgery, or when performing nerve blocks in the paravertebral space.

This study analyses rib geometric parameters of individual ribs of 14 modern human subjects (7 males and 7 females) in comparison to the reconstructed ribs of the Kebara 2 skeleton which was taken from the reconstruction of a Neandertal thorax by Sawyer & Maley (2005). Three-dimensional (3D) models were segmented from CT scans and each rib vertex cloud was placed into a local coordinate system defined from the rib principal axes. Rib clouds were then analysed using best fitting ellipses of the external contours of the cross-section areas. The centroid of each ellipse was then used to measure the centroidal pathway between each slice (rib midline). Curvature of the ribs was measured from the mid-line of the ribs as the sum of angles between successive centroids in adjacent cross sections. Distinct common patterns were noted in all rib geometric parameters for modern humans. The Kebara 2 reconstructed ribs also followed the same patterns. This study demonstrated that there are differences between the sexes in rib geometrical parameters, with females showing smaller rib width, chord length and arc length, but greater curvature (rib torsion, rib axial curvature, rib anterior-posterior bending) than males. The Kebara 2 reconstructed ribs were within the modern human range for the majority of geometrical parameters.

Ever since the seminal papers of Keith and Schultz, hominoid primate ribcages have been described as either "funnel-" or "barrel-shaped." Following this dichotomic typology, it is currently held that Homo sapiens and hylobatids (gibbons and siamangs) share a barrel-shaped ribcage and that they are more similar to each other than to the funnel-shaped thoraces of great apes (Gorilla, Pan, and Pongo). Other researchers hypothesized that thoracic width and the invagination of the thoracic spine into the thorax are related to allometry. However, analyses that take into account the complex three-dimensional (3D) shape of the ribcage are lacking. Here, we address hypotheses about thorax shape and evolution using 3D morphometrics of thoraces in anatomical connection obtained by computed tomography scans of 23 hominoid cadavers and 10 humans and examining thorax compartments composed of seven ribs (1-7 thorax) and of 11 ribs (1-11 thorax). In the 1-7 thorax analyses, the human thorax is uniquely flat because of torsion of the upper and central ribs, differing from all non-human hominoids including hylobatids. In the 1-11 thorax analyses, humans are markedly different from African great apes, with hylobatids and orangutans intermediate. In full shape space analyses, affinities between orangutans and humans on the one hand and between hylobatids and African great apes on the other are evident. Therefore, we reject the hypothesis that humans and hylobatids bear any special affinities in overall 3D thorax shape to each other. We find that larger thoraces are wider and flatter, with a more invaginated spine, supporting the allometric hypothesis. Hominoid thorax variation shows complex interactions between allometry, rib curves, torsion, and declination, and the morphology of the costo-vertebral joint and the thoracic vertebral column. When considering functional specializations alongside phylogenetic relationships, an overly simplistic dichotomy between funnel-shaped and barrel-shaped thoraces is not supported., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Objectives: First ribs bear information about thorax morphology and are usually well preserved, compared to other ribs, in bone/fossil samples. Several studies have addressed ontogeny of the first rib by studying changes in bone microanatomy and rib morphology separately, but no studies have combined both approaches to study how internal and external changes covary during ontogeny. The aim of this project is to fill this gap in our knowledge., Materials and Methods: We applied 3D geometric morphometrics of sliding semilandmarks to 14 first ribs of Homo sapiens to quantify rib curvature and mid-shaft cross-section outline. Ontogenetic variation was addressed throughout a principal component analysis (PCA). Additionally, we made histological sections at the mid-shaft of the same ribs and studied tissue matrix composition and compartmentalization. Finally, we performed partial least squares (PLS) and regression analyses to study covariation between rib morphology and compartmentalization variables., Results: PCA shows that first ribs increase their curvature over the course of ontogeny and the rib midshaft becomes less rounded during ontogeny. In addition, the sternal end becomes more medially oriented during ontogeny and the relative head-tubercle distance becomes longer. Compartmentalization shows a decrease in the area occupied by mineralized tissues and an increase in the area occupied by non-mineralized tissues over the course of ontogeny, which covaries with mid-shaft cross-section shape., Conclusions: Our results show detailed variation in rib morphology along with histological changes in bone tissue compartmentalization and, for the first time, the correlation between the two. This could be related to muscle attachments on the 1st rib and also to changes in breathing mode, from diaphragmatic in perinatals to pulmonary in adults, which could also have implications for understanding thorax evolution., (© 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Background: In forensic sciences to determine one's sex is quite important during the identity defining stage. The reliability of sex determination depends on the completeness of the remains and the degree of sexual dimorphism inherent in the population. Computed Tomography is the imaging modality of choice for two- and three-dimensional documentation and analysis of many autopsy findings., Objective: The aim of the present work was to assess the reliability of Three-dimensional Multislice Computed Tomography (3D MSCT) to determine sexual dimorphism from certain chest measurements; sternum and fourth rib using the 3D MSCT and to develop equations for sex determination from these bones among adult Egyptians sample., Subjects and Methods: The present study was performed on 60 adult Egyptians. Their age ranged from 21 up to 74 years and they were equally divided between both sexes. Sixty virtual chests (reconstructed Multislice Computed Tomography 3D images) were examined for detection of Sternal measurements; Manubrium length (ML), Sternal body length (BL), Manubrium width (MW), Sternal body widths(BWa&BWb), Sternal area (SA) [(ML + BL) × (MW + BWa + BWb)/3]and Fourth rib width (FRW)., Results: All the studied measurements were significantly higher in males than in females. Multiple regression analysis was used to and three significant regression equations were developed for predicting sex using the different studied chest measurements; the sternal measurements, the sternal area and the widths of the right and left fourth ribs with their accuracies 96.67%.95.0%.72.68% respectively., Conclusion: Sterunm and fourth rib width revealed significant metric sex differences with the use of Multislice Computed Tomography 3D images thus provide a great advantage in the analysis of skeletal remains and badly decomposed bodies., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd and Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine.
