Water systems in Southeast Asia accumulate antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) from multiple origins, notably including human clinics and animal farms. To ascertain the fate of antibiotics and ARGs in natural water environments, we monitored the concentrations of these items in Thailand. Here, we show high concentrations of tetracyclines (72,156.9 ng/L) and lincomycin (23,968.0 ng/L) in pig farms, followed by nalidixic acid in city canals. The city canals and rivers contained diverse distributions of antibiotics and ARGs. Assessments of targeted ARGs, including sul1, sul2, sul3, and tet(M), showed that freshwater (pig farm wastewater, rivers, and canals) consistently contained these ARGs, but these genes were less abundant in seawater. Although sulfonamides were low concentrations (<170 ng/mL), sul1 and sul2 genes were abundant in freshwater (minimum 4.4 × 10 -3 -maximum 1.0 × 10 0 copies/16S), suggesting that sul genes have disseminated over a long period, despite cessation of use of this class of antibiotics. Ubiquitous distribution of sul genes in freshwater appeared to be independent of selection pressure. In contrast, water of the coastal sea in the monitored area was not contaminated by these antibiotics or ARGs. The density of Enterobacteriales was lower in seawater than in freshwater, suggesting that the number of ARG-possessing Enterobacteriales falls after entering seawater. From the pig farms, through rivers/canals, to the coastal sea, the occurrence of tetracyclines and tet(M) exhibited some correlation, although not a strong one. However, no correlations were found between concentrations of total antibiotics and ARGs, nor between sulfonamides and sul genes. This is the first comprehensive study showing Thai features of antibiotics and ARGs contaminations. In this study, we focused on water quality in an urban canal and the Mekong River in the city of Can Tho, a central municipality of the Mekong Delta region, southern Vietnam. Water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, BOD5, CODCr, Na(+), Cl(-), NH4 (+)-N, SO4 (2-)-S, NO3 (-)-N, and NO2 (-)-N for both canal and river, and tide level of the urban canal, were monitored once per month from May 2010 to April 2012. The urban canal is subject to severe anthropogenic contamination, owing to poor sewage treatment. In general, water quality in the canal exhibited strong tidal variation, poorer at lower tides and better at higher tides. Some anomalies were observed, with degraded water quality under some high-tide conditions. These were associated with flow from the upstream residential area. Therefore, it was concluded that water quality in the urban canal changed with a balance between dilution effects and extent of contaminant supply, both driven by tidal fluctuations in the Mekong River.

We report the results of a nationwide survey of commonly used human and veterinary antibiotics (7 sulfonamides, trimethoprim, and 4 macrolides) in 37 Japanese rivers. Concentrations of the sum of the 12 target antibiotics ranged from undetectable to 626 ng/L, with a median of 7.3 ng/L for the 37 rivers. Antibiotics concentrations were higher in urban rivers than in rural rivers and were correlated with those of molecular markers of sewage (crotamiton and carbamazepine). Macrolides were dominant over sulfonamides in urban rivers. Sulfonamides, especially sulfamethazine (used in animals), were dominant in a few rivers in whose catchment animal husbandry is active. However, these signals of veterinary antibiotics were overwhelmed by those of human antibiotics in lower reaches of most rivers. The analysis of the antibiotics in all 88 samples showed that the target antibiotics in Japanese rivers are derived mainly from urban sewage, even though larger amounts of antibiotics are used in livestock. The contribution of non-point sources to perfluorinated surfactants (PFSs) in a river was evaluated by estimating their fluxes and by using boron (B) as a tracer. The utility of PFSs/B as an indicator for evaluating the impact of non-point sources was demonstrated. River water samples were collected from the Iruma River, upstream of the intake of drinking water treatment plants in Tokyo, during dry weather and wet weather, and 13 PFSs, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total nitrogen (TN), and B were analyzed. Perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluoroheptanoate (PFHpA), perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), perfluorononanoate (PFNA), perfluorodecanoate (PFDA), perfluoroundecanoate (PFUA), and perfluorododecanoate (PFDoDA) were detected on all sampling dates. The concentrations and fluxes of perfluorocarboxylates (PFCAs, e.g. PFOA and PFNA) were higher during wet weather, but those of perfluoroalkyl sulfonates (PFASs, e.g. PFHxS and PFOS) were not. The wet/dry ratios of PFSs/B (ratios of PFSs/B during wet weather to those during dry weather) agreed well with those of PFS fluxes (ratios of PFS fluxes during wet weather to those during dry weather), indicating that PFSs/B is useful for evaluating the contribution from non-point sources to PFSs in rivers. The wet/dry ratios of PFOA and PFNA were higher than those of other PFSs, DOC, and TN, showing that non-point sources contributed greatly to PFOA and PFNA in the water. We investigated the distributions of 12 antibiotics (viz., sulfonamides, macrolides, and trimethoprim) in the water from the Mekong Delta, Vietnam, and compared them with those in the Tamagawa River, Japan. In Vietnam, only a few antibiotics (viz., sulfamethoxazole, sulfamethazine, trimethoprim, and erythromycin-H2O) were detected in the river and canals from urban and rural sites, at concentrations of 7-360 ng/L. This contrasts with the results from the Japanese urban river, where more antibiotics (sulfamethoxazole, sulfapyridine, trimethoprim, erythromycin-H20, azithromycin, clarithromycin, and roxithromycin) were detected at concentrations ranging from 4to 448 ng/L. The concentrations of sulfonamides in the Mekong Delta were comparable to those in the Tamagawa River, whereas macrolide concentrations were lowerthanthose in the Tamagawa River. The ubiquitous occurrence of sulfamethazine, used as a veterinary medicine, in the waters in Vietnam at relatively high concentrations (15-328 ng/L) was unique. Extremely high concentrations of sulfamethazine [(18.5-19.2) x 10(3) ng/L] were detected in pig farm wastewaters, and relatively high concentrations were observed in canals near chicken and pig farms. All these data suggested the potential utility of sulfamethazine as a molecular marker of livestock-source contamination. The present study demonstrated widespread inputs of veterinary medicines to waters in Vietnam.

An analytical method for the simultaneous determination of nonylphenoxy acetic acid (NP1EC), nonylphenol monoethoxy acetic acid (NP2EC), nonylphenol (NP), octylphenol (OP), and nonylphenol monoethoxylate (NP1EO) was developed. The method was applied to environmental samples to demonstrate the distribution and behavior of nonylphenol polyethoxylates and their degradation intermediates in aquatic environments in Tokyo, Japan. In sewage treatment plants, more than 85% of NP, OP, and NP1EO were removed, whereas NP1EC and NP2EC were generated during the treatment. Concentrations of NP1EC and NP2EC in secondary effluents (1.9-2.9 microg/L) were higher than those of NP and NPIEO (0.12-0.63 microg/L). In river waters. NPIEC and NP2EC concentrations (0.11-2.8 microg/L) were higher than NP and NP1EO concentrations (<0.015-3.4 microg/L). with some exceptions. In surface sediments, neither NPIEC nor NP2EC was detectable (<0.01 microg/g dry wt) whereas NP and NPIEO were detected significantly (0.03-1.82 microg/g dry wt and 0.04-0.46 microg/g dry wt, respectively).

The presence anti-infectives in environmental waters is of interest because of their potential role in the dissemination of anti-infective resistance in bacteria and other harmful effects on non-target species such as algae and shellfish. Since no information on global trends regarding the contamination caused by these bioactive substances is yet available, we decided to investigate the impact of income inequality between countries on the occurrence of anti-infectives in surface waters. In order to perform such study, we gathered concentration values reported in the peer-reviewed literature between 1998 and 2014 and built a database. To fill the gap of knowledge on occurrence of anti-infectives in African countries, we also collected 61 surface water samples from Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique and South Africa, and measured concentrations of 19 anti-infectives. A mixed one-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) model, followed by Turkey–Kramer post hoc tests was used to identify potential differences in anti-infective occurrence between countries grouped by income level (high, upper-middle and lower-middle and low income) according to the classification by the World Bank. Comparison of occurrence of anti-infectives according to income level revealed that concentrations of these substances in contaminated surface waters were significantly higher in low and lower–middle income countries ( p = 0.0001) but not in upper–middle income countries ( p = 0.0515) compared to high-income countries. We explained these results as the consequence of the absence of or limited sewage treatment performed in lower income countries. Furthermore, comparison of concentrations of low cost anti-infectives (sulfonamides and trimethoprim) and the more expensive macrolides between income groups suggest that the cost of these substances may have an impact on their environmental occurrence in lower income countries. Since wastewaters are the most important source of contamination of anti-infectives and other contaminants of emerging concern in the environment, it is expected that deleterious effects to the aquatic biota caused by these substances will be more pronounced in countries with inadequate wastewater and collection infrastructure. With the information currently available, we could not evaluate either the role of the receiving environment or the importance of regulatory frameworks on the occurrence of anti-infectives in surface waters. Future studies should focus on these two factors in order to better evaluate risks to aquatic ecosystems in LM&LICs. We propose that CECs such as anti-infectives could be used as a new class of environmental degradation indicators that could be helpful to assess the state of development of wastewater collection and treatment infrastructure around the world. Abstract: Two kinds of stilbene-type fluorescent whitening agents (FWAs:i.e., DSBP and DAS1), which are minor components of laundry detergents, were analyzed in water column and surface sediments of Tokyo Bay and adjacent rivers to evaluate their utility as anthropogenic molecular markers for estimating the transport processes of sediment particles in the coastal zone. DSBP and DAS1 were widely distributed in Tokyo Bay sediments at concentrations ranging from 0.01 to 1.85 μg/g and 0.02 to 0.37 μg/g, respectively. The concentration ratio of DSBP to DAS1 (the DSBP/DAS1 ratio) of suspended particles in surface layers decreased from estuaries (∼3) to Tokyo Bay (&#60;1) due to selective photodegradation of DSBP in the euphotic zone. On the other hand, a higher DSBP/DAS1 ratio (3–5) was observed in inshore Tokyo Bay sediments. Using these differences in DSBP/DAS1 ratios as an indicator of photodegradation of FWAs, we propose the importance of lateral transport of riverine sediments during floods to the bay through aphotic benthic layers where there is less chance of photodegradation occurring. Relative depletion of DSBP to DAS1 in marine sediments was observed from the head to the mouth of the bay, i.e., with increasing distance from the shore. This effect can be ascribed to an increase in the relative contribution of particles vertically transported from the euphotic zone, where DSBP could be preferentially photodegraded or selective desorption of DSBP from the sediment particles during their offshore transport. In order to identify the dominant contributors to estrogenic activity in environmental waters, a comprehensive fractionation method using silica gel column chromatography, combined with recombinant yeast assay for detecting estrogenic activity and with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for quantifying endocrine disruptors and natural estrogens, was developed. The method was applied to the municipal sewage treatment plant (STP) secondary effluent discharged to the Tamagawa River in Tokyo, Japan, where endocrine disruption was observed in wild carp. The instrumental analysis demonstrated that averaged concentrations of nonylphenol, bisphenol A, estrone (E1), and 17β-estradiol (E2) were 564 ± 127, 27 ± 19, 33 ± 11, and 4.6 ± 3.0 ng/L, respectively. Based on the concentration and relative potency of these compounds, the natural estrogens E1 and E2 represented more than 98% of the total estrogen equivalent concentration (EEQ) in the STP effluent, while the contribution of phenolic compounds to total EEQ was less than 2%. Estrogenic activities associated with the dissolved phase of the effluent samples were detected by a recombinant yeast assay. By using silica gel column chromatography, the dissolved phase was separated into several fractions that were subjected to the bioassay. The polar fractions exhibited estrogenic activity. The greatest estrogenic activity was found in a polar fraction containing E1 and E2 and represented 66 to 88% of the total estrogenic activities estimated from the bioassay data. These results lead to the conclusion that E1 and E2 were the dominant environmental estrogens in the STP effluent, but a significant contribution to estrogenic activities stems from unidentified components in the effluents. We analyzed perfluorinated surfactants (PFSs) in 20 river samples and 5 wastewater secondary effluent samples in Japan to reveal their occurrence and sources. Nine PFS species were determined: perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctane sulfonamide (FOSA), perfluoroheptanoate (PFHpA), perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), perfluorononanoate (PFNA), perfluorodecanoate (PFDA), perfluoroundecanoate (PFUA), perfluorododecanoate (PFDDA), and perfluorotridecanoate (PFTDA). PFSs were detected in all rivers, revealing nationwide contamination of rivers. In particular, 11 out of 20 river samples exceeded New Jersey guidance for PFOA in drinking water (40 ng/L). PFOS, PFHpA, PFOA, and PFNA were major species in Japan. Concentrations of PFOS, PFHpA, and PFNA in rivers were strongly correlated with population density, suggesting that the chemicals were derived from urban activities. PFOA showed a significant but weak correlation. We used crotamiton, a marker of sewage effluent, for further source analysis. Concentrations of PFOS, PFHpA, and PFNA were strongly correlated with those of crotamiton, and plots of secondary effluents fell near the regression lines of rivers, indicating that the PFOS, PFHpA, and PFNA in rivers were derived from sewage effluent On the other hand, PFOA was found at remarkably high levels (54-192 ngIL) in seven river samples containing low levels of crotamiton, suggesting that it was derived from nonsewage point sources, as well as sewage effluent The total fluxes of sewage-derived PFOS, PFHpA, PFOA, and PFNA from Japan were estimated to be 3.6, 2.6,5.6, and 2.6 t/year, respectively.
