This study aims at evaluating upper limb muscle coordination and activation in workers performing an actual use-case manual material handling (MMH). The study relies on the comparison of the workers' muscular activity while they perform the task, with and without the help of a dual-arm cobot (BAZAR). Eleven participants performed the task and the flexors and extensors muscles of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and trunk joints were recorded using bipolar electromyography. The results showed that, when the particular MMH was carried out with BAZAR, both upper limb and trunk muscular co-activation and activation were decreased. Therefore, technologies that enable human-robot collaboration (HRC), which share a workspace with employees, relieve employees of external loads and enhance the effectiveness and calibre of task completion. Additionally, these technologies improve the worker's coordination, lessen the physical effort required to interact with the robot, and have a favourable impact on his or her physiological motor strategy. Practitioner summary: Upper limb and trunk muscle co-activation and activation is reduced when a specific manual material handling was performed with a cobot than without it. By improving coordination, reducing physical effort, and changing motor strategy, cobots could be proposed as an ergonomic intervention to lower workers' biomechanical risk in industry.

Collaborative Robots-CoBots-are emerging as a promising technological aid for workers. To date, most CoBots merely share their workspace or collaborate without contact, with their human partners. We claim that robots would be much more beneficial if they physically collaborated with the worker, on high payload tasks. To move high payloads, while remaining safe, the robot should use two or more lightweight arms. In this work, we address the following question: to what extent can robots help workers in physical human-robot collaboration tasks? To find an answer, we have gathered an interdisciplinary group, spanning from an industrial end user to cognitive ergonomists, and including biomechanicians and roboticists. We drew inspiration from an industrial process realized repetitively by workers of the SME HANKAMP (Netherlands). Eleven participants replicated the process, without and with the help of a robot. During the task, we monitored the participants' biomechanical activity. After the task, the participants completed a survey with usability and acceptability measures; seven workers of the SME completed the same survey. The results of our research are the following. First, by applying-for the first time in collaborative robotics-Potvin's method, we show that the robot substantially reduces the participants' muscular effort. Second: we design and present an unprecedented method for measuring the robot reliability and reproducibility in collaborative scenarios. Third: by correlating the worker's effort with the power measured by the robot, we show that the two agents act in energetic synergy. Fourth: the participant's increasing level of experience with robots shifts his/her focus from the robot's overall functionality towards finer expectations. This paper introduces a new human-machine interface for individuals with tetraplegia. We investigated the feasibility of piloting an assistive device by processing supra-lesional muscle responses online. The ability to voluntarily contract a set of selected muscles was assessed in five spinal cord-injured subjects through electromyographic (EMG) analysis. Two subjects were also asked to use the EMG interface to control palmar and lateral grasping of a robot hand. The use of different muscles and control modalities was also assessed. These preliminary results open the way to new interface solutions for high-level spinal cord-injured patients.

The quality of life of people suffering from severe motor disabilities can benefit from the use of current assistive technology capable of ameliorating communication, house-environment management and mobility, according to the user's residual motor abilities. Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are systems that can translate brain activity into signals that control external devices. Thus they can represent the only technology for severely paralyzed patients to increase or maintain their communication and control options. Here we report on a pilot study in which a system was implemented and validated to allow disabled persons to improve or recover their mobility (directly or by emulation) and communication within the surrounding environment. The system is based on a software controller that offers to the user a communication interface that is matched with the individual's residual motor abilities. Patients (n=14) with severe motor disabilities due to progressive neurodegenerative disorders were trained to use the system prototype under a rehabilitation program carried out in a house-like furnished space. All users utilized regular assistive control options (e.g., microswitches or head trackers). In addition, four subjects learned to operate the system by means of a non-invasive EEG-based BCI. This system was controlled by the subjects' voluntary modulations of EEG sensorimotor rhythms recorded on the scalp; this skill was learnt even though the subjects have not had control over their limbs for a long time. We conclude that such a prototype system, which integrates several different assistive technologies including a BCI system, can potentially facilitate the translation from pre-clinical demonstrations to a clinical useful BCI.

Deformable object manipulation (DOM) is an emerging research problem in robotics. The ability to manipulate deformable objects endows robots with higher autonomy and promises new applications in the industrial, services, and health-care sectors. However, compared to rigid object manipulation, the manipulation of deformable objects is considerably more complex and is still an open research problem. Addressing DOM challenges demands breakthroughs in almost all aspects of robotics: hardware design, sensing, (deformation) modeling, planning, and control. In this article, we review recent advances and highlight the main challenges when considering deformation in each subfield. The objective of this paper is to present a systematic review of existing sensor-based control methodologies for applications that involve direct interaction between humans and robots, in the form of either physical collaboration or safe coexistence. To this end, we first introduce the basic formulation of the sensor-servo problem, and then, present its most common approaches: vision-based, touch-based, audio-based, and distance-based control. Afterwards, we discuss and formalize the methods that integrate heterogeneous sensors at the control level. The surveyed body of literature is classified according to various factors such as: sensor type, sensor integration method, and application domain. In this article, we present a new scheme that approximates unknown sensorimotor models of robots by using feedback signals only. The formulation of the uncalibrated sensor-based regulation problem is first formulated, then, we develop a computational method that distributes the model estimation problem amongst multiple adaptive units that specialize in a local sensorimotor map. Different from traditional estimation algorithms, the proposed method requires little data to train and constrain it (the number of required data points can be analytically determined) and has rigorous stability properties (the conditions to satisfy Lyapunov stability are derived). SUMMARY: Navigation tasks are often subject to several constraints that can be related to the sensors (visibility) or come from the environment (obstacles). In this paper, we propose a framework for autonomous omnidirectional wheeled robots that takes into account both collision and occlusion risk, during sensor-based navigation. The task consists in driving the robot towards a visual target in the presence of static and moving obstacles. The target is acquired by fixed – limited field of view – on-board cameras, while the surrounding obstacles are detected by lidar scanners. To perform the task, the robot has not only to keep the target in view while avoiding the obstacles, but also to predict its location in the case of occlusion. This research addresses the challenge of large/complex deformation in the shape control tasks of Deformable Linear Objects (DLO). We propose a collaborative approach using two manipulators to achieve shape control of a DLO in 2D workspace. The proposed methodology introduces an innovative Intermediary Shapes Generation (ISG) algorithm which outputs a series of intermediary shapes to guide the DLO towards the desired shape. The robot controller is formulated as an optimization problem, where the main objective is to minimize the error between the current shape and the desired shape, while ensuring the diminishing rigidity property of the DLO as a constraint. We conduct extensive simulations and real-life experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of our approach. We consider various scenarios of basic shapes, as well as complex deformations with opposite concavities between initial and final shapes. The outcomes demonstrate the robustness and high accuracy of the proposed system in achieving complex deformations. This capability represents the primary contribution of our research. The optimization-based control framework, coupled with the ISG algorithm, enables effective shape control without the need for extensive modeling nor training, and offers a promising solution for practical applications requiring precise shape control of DLOs. In human–robot interaction, the robot controller must reactively adapt to sudden changes in the environment (due to unpredictable human behaviour). This often requires operating different modes, and managing sudden signal changes from heterogeneous sensor data. In this paper, we present a multimodal sensor-based controller, enabling a robot to adapt to changes in the sensor signals (here, changes in the human collaborator behaviour). Our controller is based on a unified task formalism, and in contrast with classical hybrid visicn–force–position control, it enables smooth transitions and weighted combinations of the sensor tasks. The approach is validated in a mock-up industrial scenario, where pose, vision (from both traditional camera and Kinect), and force tasks must be realized either exclusively or simultaneously, for human–robot collaboration. We present two visual servoing controllers (pose-based and image-based) enabling mobile robots with a fixed pinhole camera to reach and follow a continuous path drawn on the ground. The first contribution is the theoretical and experimental comparison between pose-based and image-based techniques for a nonholonomic robot task. Moreover, our controllers are appropriate not only for path following, but also for path reaching, a problem that has been rarely tackled in the past. Finally, in contrast with most works, which require the path geometric model, only two path features are necessary in our image-based scheme and three in the pose-based scheme.
