Despite its fundamental role for carbon (C) and nutrient cycling, rhizodeposition remains 'the hidden half of the hidden half': it is highly dynamic and rhizodeposits are rapidly incorporated into microorganisms, soil organic matter, and decomposed to CO2. Therefore, rhizodeposition is rarely quantified and remains the most uncertain part of the soil C cycle and of C fluxes in terrestrial ecosystems. This review synthesizes and generalizes the literature on C inputs by rhizodeposition under crops and grasslands (281 data sets). The allocation dynamics of assimilated C (after 13C- CO2 or 14C- CO2 labeling of plants) were quantified within shoots, shoot respiration, roots, net rhizodeposition (i.e., C remaining in soil for longer periods), root-derived CO2, and microorganisms. Partitioning of C pools and fluxes were used to extrapolate belowground C inputs via rhizodeposition to ecosystem level. Allocation from shoots to roots reaches a maximum within the first day after C assimilation. Annual crops retained more C (45% of assimilated 13C or 14C) in shoots than grasses (34%), mainly perennials, and allocated 1.5 times less C belowground. For crops, belowground C allocation was maximal during the first 1-2 months of growth and decreased very fast thereafter. For grasses, it peaked after 2-4 months and remained very high within the second year causing much longer allocation periods. Despite higher belowground C allocation by grasses (33%) than crops (21%), its distribution between various belowground pools remains very similar. Hence, the total C allocated belowground depends on the plant species, but its further fate is species independent. This review demonstrates that C partitioning can be used in various approaches, e.g., root sampling, CO2 flux measurements, to assess rhizodeposits' pools and fluxes at pot, plot, field and ecosystem scale and so, to close the most uncertain gap of the terrestrial C cycle. Abstract: Rhizodeposit-carbon (rhizo-C) serves as a primary energy and C source for microorganisms in the rhizosphere. Despite important progress in understanding the fate of rhizo-C in upland soils, little is known about microbial community dynamics associated with rhizo-C in flooded soils, especially depending on water regimes in rice systems. In this study, rice grown under non-flooded, continuously flooded and alternating water regimes was pulse labeled with 13CO2 and the incorporation of rhizo-C into specific microbial groups was determined by 13C in phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) at day 2 and 14 after the labeling. A decreased C released from roots under continuously flooded condition was accompanied with lower total 13C incorporation into microorganisms compared to the non-flooded and alternating water regimes treatments. Continuous flooding caused a relative increase of 13C incorporation in Gram positive bacteria (i14:0, i15:0, a15:0, i16:0, i17:0, a17:0). In contrast, Gram negative bacteria (16:1ω7c, 18:1ω7c, cy17:0, cy 19:0) and fungi (18:2ω6, 9c, 18:1ω9c) showed greater rhizo-C incorporation coupled with a higher turnover under non-flooded and alternating water regimes treatments. These observations suggest that microbial groups processing rhizo-C differed among rice systems with varying water regimes. In contrast to non-flooded and alternating water regimes, there was little to no temporal 13C change in most microbial groups under continuous flooding condition between day 2 and 14 after the labeling, which may demonstrate slower microbial processing turnover. In summary, our findings indicate that belowground C input by rhizodeposition and its biological cycling was significantly influenced by water regimes in rice systems. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Microbial processes mediated by soil enzymes are crucial in soil organic matter decomposition, resulting in release of nutrients that become available for plant and microbial uptake. Therefore, it is crucial to know the sensitivity of enzyme activities (EA) along soil depths at distinct plant vegetation stages, and how the availability of mineral nitrogen (N) alters EA. We studied effects of N fertilization (0 and 160 kg N ha −1 ), soil depth (0–35 cm), and plant-phenological stage (silking and maturity) on microbial biomass C (C mic ) and potential activities of C-, N- and P-acquiring enzymes in the field under Zea mays L. Nitrogen fertilization increased shoot biomass by more than 80% compared to unfertilized plants. Maize roots triggered increases in C mic and EA for all measured enzymes compared to bare fallow. Stimulating effect of plant roots on EA was enzyme specific and stronger at silking than maturity stage of maize. The down-regulating effect of N fertilization on EA involved in acquiring N was most pronounced on the activity of L-leucine aminopeptidase and β-1,4- N -acetylglucosaminidase. Soil depth was the primary determinant of EA, explaining up to 51% of the variation. Depth-dependent EA changes were stronger in rooted soil. A pronounced biotic control on EA was demonstrated by higher EA in rooted soil than in bare fallow. This confirmed root-mediated microbial activation. Stronger effect of silking vs. maturity stage on EA indicated that actively growing roots fuel microorganisms via root-derived organics. Soil aggregation and microbial activities within the aggregates are important factors regulating soil carbon (C) turnover. A reliable and sensitive proxy for microbial activity is activity of extracellular enzymes (EEA). In the present study, effects of soil aggregates on EEA were investigated under three maize plant densities (Low, Normal, and High). Bulk soil was fractionated into three aggregate size classes (> 2000 μm large macroaggregates; 2000–250 μm small macroaggregates; < 250 μm microaggregates) by optimal-moisture sieving. Microbial biomass and EEA (β-1,4-glucosidase (BG), β-1,4- N -acetylglucosaminidase (NAG), l -leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) and acid phosphatase (acP)) catalyzing soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition were measured in rooted soil of maize and soil from bare fallow. Microbial biomass C (C mic ) decreased with decreasing aggregate size classes. Potential and specific EEA (per unit of C mic ) increased from macro- to microaggregates. In comparison with bare fallow soil, specific EEA of microaggregates in rooted soil was higher by up to 73%, 31%, 26%, and 92% for BG, NAG, acP and LAP, respectively. Moreover, high plant density decreased macroaggregates by 9% compared to bare fallow. Enhanced EEA in three aggregate size classes demonstrated activation of microorganisms by roots. Strong EEA in microaggregates can be explained by microaggregates' localization within the soil. Originally adhering to surfaces of macroaggregates, microaggregates were preferentially exposed to C substrates and nutrients, thereby promoting microbial activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
