This article discusses the crisis of the social sciences in France, the U.S. and Russia. The author argues that the syndrome of paradigms, the specific reaction of scholars to the prolonged crisis of the social sciences, seems to be the cause for the recent boom in translations. She contrasts the crisis in France with that in Russia and asserts that while the crisis in the former is internal to the history of the social sciences, the issue in Russia is deeper. It is also noted that social scientists continue to search for translatable paradigms from Western Europe or the U.S.
