Two new salts [4-ClBzPid]2[Ni(mnt)2](1) and [4-ClBzPid][Ni(mnt)2](2)([4-ClBzPid]+= 1-(4′-chlorobenzyl)-piperidinium and mnt2−= maleonitriledithiolate) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, UV-Vis, ESI-MS, single crystal X-ray diffraction, and magnetic measurements. The [Ni(mnt)2]2−anions of1form a one-dimensional side-by-side structure via N···N short interaction, whereas the [Ni(mnt)2]−anions in2form a one-dimensional face-to-face column through short inter-molecular Ni···Ni, Ni···S, and S···S interactions in which the Ni(III) ions form a nonuniform magnetic chain with the Ni···Ni distances of 3.676 Å and 4.357 Å. Furthermore, the [4-ClBzPid]+cations in1stack into 1D columns via C–H···Cl and Cl···Cl interactions, while the cations (C) and [Ni(mnt)2]−anions (A) of2stack into a 1D column with a A-CC-A-CC-A sequence by N···π and N–H···N weak interactions. Some other weak interactions including C–H···N and C–H···Ni hydrogen bonds result in the forming of a 3D network. Two hybrid salts, [2ClBzTPP]2[Ni(i-mnt)2] (1) and [4ClBzTPP]2[Ni(i-mnt)2] (2), were obtained in crystalline form by the reaction of disodium iso-maleonitriledithiolate (K2(i-mnt)) with nickel(II) chloride hexahydrate and 1-(2′-chlorobenzyl)triphenyl-phosphonium or 1-(4′-chlorobenzyl)triphenylphospho-nium bromide ([2ClBzTPP]Br/[4ClBzTPP]Br) in methanol. Two salts were characterized by elemental analyses, UV, IR, ESI-MS, molar conductivity, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Both salts crystallize in the triclinic space groupP-1 and the central Ni(II) ion has a distorted square planar coordination geometry. Lattice stability is provided by weak interactions observed in 1 and 2 such as C-H···S, C-H···Cl, and C-H···Ni hydrogen bonds and π···π orp···π interactions, which results in the forming of a 3D network structure. Two new tetrachloromanganate(II) salts, [BzTPP]2[MnCl4] (1) and [4NO2BzTPP]2[MnCl4] (2) ([BzTPP]+ = 1-benzyl- triphenylphosphonium; [4NO2BzTPP]+ = 1-(4′-nitrobenzyl) triphenylphosphonium), have been prepared and characterized. Compound 1 crystallizes in the triclinic space group P-1, while 2 is monoclinic P21/c. Both 1 and 2 comprise one [MnCl4]2− anion and two cations, and the [MnCl4]2− anion exhibits distorted tetrahedral coordination geometry. The cations of 1 form a dimer through C-H···π hydrogen bonds and π···π stacking interactions. The C-H···Cl and C-H···O hydrogen bonds result in a complicated hydrogen-bonded network. Two tetrachlorocuprate(II) salts with substituted methyl pyridinium, [Bz-2-MePy]2[CuCl4] (1) and [Bz-4-MePy]2[CuCl4] (2) ([Bz-2-MePy]+ = 1-benzyl-2'-methylpyridinium; [Bz-4-MePy]+ = 1-benzyl-4'-methylpyridinium), were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, infrared (IR), mass spectroscopy (MS), and single-crystal x-ray diffraction. Compound 1 crystallizes in the tetragonal system with space group P4/n, while compound 2 crystallizes in the orthorhombic system with space group Pna21. The [CuCl4]2- anion in 1 and 2 exhibits a distorted tetrahedron geometry. Some weak hydrogen bonds such as C--H···Cl, and N--H···Cl between the anion and cation were observed in 1 and 2. Two tetrachlorocuprate(II) salts with substituted benzyl pyridinium, [BzPy]2[CuCl4](1) and [Bz-4-NH2Py]2[CuCl4](2) ([BzPy]+ = 1-benzylpyridinium; [Bz-4-NH2Py]+ = 1-benzyl-4'-aminopyridinium), were synthesized and characterized. The two salts comprise a [CuCl4]2- anion and two [BzPy]+ or [Bz-4-NH2Py]+ cations. The [CuCl4]2- anion exhibits a very distorted tetrahedral and square-planar coordination geometry for 1 and 2, respectively. The C-H···Cl, N-H···Cl and C-H···Cu weak hydrogen bonds between the anion and cation found in the crystal play important roles in the stacking and stabilization of the two salts. Two new salts, [NO2BrBzPy]2[M(mnt)2] ([NO2BrBzPy]+= 1-(2'-bromo-4'-nitrobenzyl)pyridinium; mnt2-= maleonitriledithiolate; M = Ni(1), Pd(2)) have been prepared and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, UV, ESI-MS spectra, TG, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The results reveal that when the metal ion is changed from Ni(II) to Pd(II), the crystal system, and the dihedral angles between the phenyl and pyridine rings and the C-C-N reference plane of the cation, and the stacking modes of the anions and the cations are evidently different. Some weak interactions such as C-H···Br, C-H···O, C-H···N and C-H···S hydrogen bonds, p[image omitted] or [image omitted] stacking interactions in 1 and 2 play important roles in the molecular stacking and generate a 2D structure. Two new salts based on [Ni(tdas)2]2 - (tdas2 - = 1, 2, 5-thiadiazole-3,4-dithiolate) anion with substituted benzylpyridinium cation, [BzPy][Ni(tdas)2] (1) and [NO2BzPy]2[Ni(tdas)2] (2), have been prepared by reaction of Na2tdas, NiCl2.6H2O, and 1-Rbenzylpyrid-inium bromide [RBzPyBr, R = H(1), NO2(2)]. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses indicate that the two salts crystallize in a monoclinic system with space group C2/c, but the stacking modes of the anions and the cations are different. Some intra-molecular contacts such as p· · · π, π · · · π, or C-H · · · N weak interactions in 1 and 2 play important roles in the molecular stacking and generate a 2D structure.
