This paper studies the spillover effect of home mortgage delinquencies using a discrete-choice spatial network model. In our empirical study, a main challenge in estimating this model is that mortgage repayment decisions can only be observed for a sample of all the borrowers in the study region. We show that the nested pseudolikelihood (NPL) algorithm can be readily modified to accommodate this missing data issue. Monte Carlo simulations indicate that the proposed estimator works well in finite samples and ignoring this issue leads to a downward bias in the estimated spillover effect. We estimate the model using data on single-family residential mortgage delinquencies in Clark County of Nevada in 2010, and find strong evidence of spillover effects. We also conduct some counterfactual experiments to illustrate the policy relevance of the spillover effect.

This study investigated the fit between contingency variables (e.g. task uncertainty and decentralization) in accounting information systems (AIS); a good fit is assumed to improve user satisfaction. We divided task uncertainty into two dimensions: variability and analyzability. We chose information scope, timeliness, and aggregation as the AIS characteristics to be studied within each dimension. User satisfaction was adopted as a surrogate to measure the performance of AIS. The responses of 126 managers were drawn from a cross-industry sample in Taiwan. Multiple regression models were employed to test the hypotheses. The results of the empirical test led us to two results: (1) broad-scope information (external environment or future-oriented information) promotes user satisfaction in high task variability situations, and (2) in a highly decentralized organization, broad-scope, timely, and aggregated information will also facilitate user satisfaction.

This paper identifies the effect of trade policy on market power through new data and a new identification strategy. It uses a large data set containing export values and quantities by product and destination for all exporting firms in 12 developing and emerging countries over several years, merged with destination-product-specific information on tariffs and non-tariff barriers. Market power is identified by observing how exporting firms price discriminate across markets in reaction to variations in bilateral exchange rates. Pricing-to-market is prevalent in all regions of the sample, even among small firms, although it is increasing in firm size, in accordance with theory. More importantly, the effect of non-tariff measures is not isomorphic to that of tariffs: the observed pricing-to-market behavior suggests that, although tariffs reduce the market power of foreign firms through classic rent-shifting effects, non-tariff measures alter market structure and reinforce the market power of non-exiting firms, domestic and foreign ones alike.

We examine whether a firm’s decision to disclose non-financial proprietary information depends on peer disclosures of similar information. Using a sample of 5,035 unique clinical trials by U.S. pharmaceutical firms over the 2007-2014 period, we find that the firm is less likely to disclose its own clinical trial results if peers have published clinical trial results pertaining to the same medical condition. Conditional on disclosing clinical trial results, the firm is also less likely to disclose the trial results on time when peers have disclosed their clinical trial results. Our cross-sectional tests suggest that proprietary costs of disclosure play an important role in the relation between peer disclosures and the firm’s own disclosure. In particular, the negative relation is more pronounced when proprietary costs of disclosure are higher. Taken together, our findings provide new evidence on the interplay between peer and own disclosures of non-financial proprietary information.

This paper examines the relationship among IT capability, operations strategy decisions and operational performance. Using primary data from a sample of European firms, the authors test a model of fit between two specific IT capability-building decisions and three competitive priorities, and they analyze the impact of IT capability alignment on several dimensions of process performance. After uncovering three stylized configurations, they note that firms tend to adopt internally coherent IT capability-building decisions but they find only mixed evidence of alignment between IT capability-building decisions and competitive priorities. Interestingly, however, failing to achieve alignment has negative performance consequences but only for firms that develop limited IT capability. Their results suggests that IT plays a central role in the fulfillment of a firm’s operations strategy, not only for firms that pursue differentiation and are interested in improving the effectiveness of their customer-oriented functions, but also for firms seeking efficiency improvements in back-office operations. Although it is, a priori, more expensive, the development of advanced IT capability can support cost leadership strategies more effectively than a frugal approach, as long as IT projects are used to generate operational knowledge and thus improve process efficiency. At the same time, their results cast further doubt on the value of frugal IT capability, even for firms that strive to reduce cost.

International audience; As a French-German research team we conducted a survey with a sample of academic libraries and graduate schools in France and Germany to determine the current situation and trends in the publishing of electronic PhD theses and dissertations (ETDs) under Open Access (OA). The percentage of OA theses varies depending on the country, the research field, and the institution. Not all ETDs are available in OA for a variety of reasons, including confidentiality, embargoes, author-imposed restrictions, and a lack of encouragement and/or requirement by libraries and graduate schools. The survey reveals qualitative and structural differences between France and Germany in this area. Here we discuss the survey findings, the methodologies used in the survey, and the various policies (or lack thereof) and their impact on ETDs and OA. A strategy is outlined for moving towards ensuring that publishing ETDs under OA becomes routine, and an electronic version becomes the only manifestation of a thesis.
