In this study, the finite-element boundary integral (FE-BI) method is applied to analyse the electromagnetic scattering from arbitrary objects in the half-space environment. Combined with the real image method to approximate the half-space Green's function, the half-space FE-BI can be extended for electrically large problems by the fast multipole method. An efficient preconditioner is constructed with both the finite-element matrix and the near-field part of the boundary integral equation operator for the FE-BI analysis. Several Krylov subspace iterative algorithms are compared as the solvers for the discrete dipole approximation method to analyze the electromagnetic scattering problem. Fast Fourier transform technique is exploited to accelerate the computation of matrix-vector product. Numerical examples for homogeneous spheres indicate that the results of radar cross section agree well with the exact solutions. Some misleading concepts in literatures are clarified. We give a new comparison of the computational complexities of these methods. Faster solvers are recommended according to the size of scatterer. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The finite element-boundary integral (FE-BI) method is applied for the analysis of scattering and radiation by cavity-backed patch antenna and arrays. In this investigation, the FE-BI formulations have been implemented using brick element volumes and it allows for a particular use of the efficient FFT-based iterative solver.
